Aftershock Festival Brought The Hard-Rock Heat To Sacramento

Since 2012, Aftershock Festival has been rocking Sacramento, California with some of the best and brightest from the worlds of metal, hard rock, and punk. What began as a humble event with a few handfuls of bands — that first year saw the likes of Deftones, Stone Temple Pilots, and Bush — has now expanded to a massive, multi-day, many-staged behemoth that sees rock fans traveling in from around the world.

This year’s festival was no different, with headliners including Tool, Korn, Guns n’ Roses, and Avenged Sevenfold. And, like many of the big rock festivals, the talent only gets more exciting and impressive as you go down the lineup, with highlights including Turnstile, Rancid, Incubus, Limp Bizkit, Queens Of The Stone Age, White Reaper, AFI, Godsmack, Deafheaven, and many more.

For those who were unable to make it to the festival, Uproxx’s Paul L. Carter was on site to capture the below photos from the festival, showcasing some of the biggest rock bands in the world at their best. And don’t worry, Aftershock has already announced their 2024 return, taking place on October 10-13, 2024. Check out the images below.

‘The View’s Ana Navarro Called Out Jada Pinkett Smith Over The Timing Of Her Separation Revelation

The View did not waste time tackling Jada Pinkett Smith‘s bombshell revelation that she and Will Smith have been secretly separated since 2016. In a new interview with PEOPLE to promote her memoir, Worthy, Jada came clean about the state of the couple’s marriage.

“We’re still figuring it out,” Jada said after confirming that she and Smith were already separated for six years when the infamous Oscars slap occurred. “We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.”

Of course, this revelation raises all kinds of questions about Will Smith’s assaulting Chris Rock and his perplexing decision to be part of a Red Table Talk interview about Jada’s affair with August Alina considering the couple were already living separate lives. However, don’t ask The View co-host Ana Navarro about it. She’s already sick of it.

“Why do I know so much about these people’s marriage?” Navarro said via Entertainment Weekly. “I kind of feel like I know more about their marriage than I know about my own damn marriage. I don’t need to know all of this. You know what? I just want to watch reruns of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Bad Boys. Just leave this out of my head.”

Blunt as always, Navarro called out Jada for using the separation reveal to boost book sales.

“Listen, I think she’s having a relationship with her bank account, because every time she needs to increase the ratings of the Red Table, every time she needs to sell books, she drops these bombshells,” Navarro said. “I find it unseemly. Be careful of anybody who pretends to have a perfect marriage.”

Bobby Krlic Returns As The Haxan Cloak For The First Time In A Decade With His New Song ‘N/Y’

Composer Bobby Krlic has shared a new single, “N/Y,” under his solo alias, The Haxan Cloak. Over the years, Krlic has worked as a producer alongside the likes of Björk, Father John Misty, Goldfrapp, and more, and has composed scores for films like Midsommar and shows like the Netflix original, Beef. However, he hasn’t put out music of his own since 2013.

On Krlic’s latest bit of solo music — a song called “N/Y” — he delivers a terrifying instrumental track, accompanied by a visual containing terrifying imagery, matching the horror of the movies and television he’s worked on over the years.

“‘N/Y’ is a feeling I’ve had for a really long time,” he said in a statement. “It was made with the intention of being something that I could play live only, and was just this burst of intensity that could re-contextualize anywhere I would play it in. I kept working on it and it became something that I wanted to hear regardless of the context. I made the video in the same way. Making charcoal drawings and oil paintings, then fusing these together with self-shot video of myself in my studio. It feels immediate and without compromise. It was made quickly, in a moment, with complete intention. I really hope it changes the space you’re in.”

You can see the video for “N/Y” above.

The Minnesota Timberwolves Biggest Question And X-Factor For The 2023-24 Season

Every NBA team is interesting in its own way as the regular season get up and running. Having said that, you can make the case that there are few teams more interesting than the Minnesota Timberwolves as we get ready to begin the 2023-24 campaign. They made waves last offseason by swinging for the fences, but instead of hitting a home run, Minnesota hit a soft ground ball to shortstop and got thrown out.

Now, they enter a year where the hope is they’ll be able to take that next step forward, with the trio of Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert, and Karl-Anthony Towns living up to the promise the front office imagined when the called up the Utah Jazz and expressed their interest in the French big man. But the question remains: Can the second year of their big three go much better? Hey, on that note…

Biggest Question: Can The Second Year Of Their Big Three Go Much Better?

The Timberwolves took one of the NBA’s more ambitious swings in recent memory last offseason, as the team moved a ton of stuff to bring Gobert to Minneapolis. It was a pretty fascinating statement of intent, as the team clearly believed that a frontcourt duo of Towns and Gobert could work in harmony as Edwards ascends to become the face of the franchise. The result of that bet: 42 wins, 40 losses, needing a win in the Play-In Tournament to earn a postseason berth, where they lost in five games to the eventual champion Denver Nuggets in the first round.

Obviously there are some pretty easily identifiable reasons as to why that was the case, namely the fact that Towns only played in 29 games due to injury. Their offense wasn’t as dynamic as expected. They swapped out their point guard after 54 games, as they were part of a three-team deal with the Jazz and the Los Angeles Lakers to replace D’Angelo Russell with Mike Conley. Instead of having the sort of elite defense that teams built around Gobert tend to have, Minnesota was 10th in defensive rating. The regular season ended with Gobert getting suspended for punching Kyle Anderson during a timeout.

There were bright spots — Edwards is very good, Jaden McDaniels is an impressive player — and the team was by no means a catastrophe. Still, Minnesota didn’t go all-in on the Edwards/Gobert/Towns trio just to win one playoff game and spend the entire regular season flirting with a .500 record. Whether or not they can take a step forward as a trio is the big question for this season and beyond, and if they can’t, there are going to have to be some really difficult conversations about what they can accomplish. But the good news is that those three guys are all extremely talented, they have a well-respected head coach in Chris Finch, and their roster is filled with guys who know how to play alongside that trio.

X-Factor: A Full Season Of Mike Conley

Another step forward for McDaniels can go here, too — man, how excited must the Timberwolves be that they didn’t have to give him up in the Gobert trade? — but we’ll show some love to an important veteran presence. No one is going to argue that Conley, who just turned 36, will play at an All-Star level or anything like that. Conley’s best days are obviously behind him, but he is still quite good at understanding the tempo of a game, getting his guys organized, and making sure his teammates get the ball in the spots that they like. He’s happy to defer to others, and has a good sense of when he has to pick his spots.

Conley started every game after the Timberwolves acquired him in a trade at the deadline last year. While this 4-man group only appears in seven games and 103 minutes together, lineups with Conley and the team’s three stars had a net rating of 9.2, per NBA.com. While they struggled against the Nuggets in the playoffs, Conley is the kind of conductor who can really help those three players gel over the course of an 82-game season. If he can do all the stuff that has made him a great pro for years, he’ll provide a really great 1-2 punch in the backcourt alongside Edwards.

Phoenix Called On The Motley Crew Of Pusha T, Benee, And Chad Hugo To Add Onto The Magic Of ‘All Eyes On Me’

Phoenix haven’t historically been known for their collaborations, but they’ve actually been busting them out as of late. Their latest album, 2022’s Alpha Zulu, includes the Ezra Koenig-featuring “Tonight,” Clairo joined the group for a remix of “After Midnight” earlier this year, and now Phoenix has unveiled another new Alpha Zulu remix, featuring Pusha T, Benee, and Chad Hugo.

That may seem like a random or unexpected mix of collaborators, but it all makes sense: The band said in a statement, “A huge thank you to le Roi Pusha-T – most played artist in our backstage; to Chad Hugo, who always showed up when we were playing in Virginia, it’s about time we worked together! And to Benee, who worked at light speed to make this happen and added some magic. MERCI!!!”

This isn’t Pusha’s first time linking up with the French group: he joined them on stage at a Paris festival this summer, performing Phoenix’s 2000 song “Funky Squaredance” before jumping into “All Eyes On Me.”

The band’s Thomas Mars previously told Uproxx of Alpha Zulu, “Every album we make is a reaction to previous one. As we were digging into this one, we realized that we were putting the songs that had the least in common together. We tried to open the spectrum as much as possible and make a little bit of a Frankenstein.”

How Much Are Travis Scott’s Air Jordan 1 Low Golf ‘Neutral Olive’ Sneakers?

Travis Scott’s partnership with Nike and its Jordan Brand has been quite lucrative over the past few years. He’s collaborated with the brand on over 20 pairs of sneakers (and counting), and every pair sells out after a SNKRS app feeding frenzy that leaves many fans feeling a serious case of FOMO. They’ll have another shot at glory (or failure) this Friday, when the Air Jordan 1 Low Golf “Olive” pair hits SNKRS and select retailers. Now, you may be wondering…

How Much Are Travis Scott’s Air Jordan 1 Low Golf ‘Neutral Olive’ Sneakers?

… Too much.

I kid, I kid.

But you’re going to want to adjust your budget. These guys will reportedly retail for $170, and that’s BEFORE the resellers get their grubby little mitts on them. StockX will probably ask for at least four times that (gotta pay back mom’s credit card somehow, right?). In any event, if that ends up being too steep a price to pay — or you whiff on SNKRS, which is basically guaranteed at this point — there’s always the Travis Scott Mac Attack which drops in December for $120 (it’s also a cooler shoe in some circles, bearing the left-of-center cachet that many OG sneakerheads feel is the true key to honing a unique style). Either way, good luck.

Jimmy Kimmel Clowned Marjorie Taylor Greene For Repeating Trump’s Lie That Hamas Is Coming To America Through Mexico

Jimmy Kimmel made quick work of Marjorie Taylor Greene after the Georgia congresswoman parroted Donald Trump‘s talking point that Hamas is coming to America by way of Mexico.

“Trump’s associates in the crazy business have been making the most of this attack on Israel,” Kimmel said. “Ever since that ‘caravan of dangerous immigrants’ turned out to be figments of their imagination, they’d be looking for something new to rile all the old people up.”

Kimmel then teed up a clip of Greene pushing the old “terrorists are sneaking in through Mexico” canard that’s been a favorite of the right ever since 9/11.

“What happened to Israel could happen to America because our country has been invaded by millions of people from over 160 countries,” Greene said. Kimmel made short work of her ridiculous claim.

“160? That’s almost all of the countries. You’re telling me we’re being invaded by Belgium? Maybe Poland?” Kimmel joked before mocking Greene. “Hordes of Belgium and Polish immigrants are sneaking in here with their waffles and kielbasa, and the Gazpacho Police do nothing about it. They let them all right in!”

“It’s hard to believe that people are dumb enough to believe this stuff,” Kimmel continued, “But when you hear Trump talk about the state of our school systems, it kind of starts to make sense.”

The late night host then played a clip of Trump during a recent Real America Voice interview.

“So we have the worst education almost in the large world,” Trump said. “The world that people know about.”

“Yes, yes, the large world,” Kimmel quipped. “The world that people know about. Sometimes his mouth says things like a broken Furby or something.”

Fenne Lily announced that she will be releasing an expanded version of her Big Picture album this winter. To celebrate, she dropped the visualizer for one of the five new bonus tracks, “Hollywood And Fear.” The track details the divide in the way love is portrayed in movies versus real life.

“It’s something my mum asked me constantly when I was a kid — I would argue until I lost the thread of the argument when I could have easily let it go,” Lily shared about one of the lyrics and the song’s inspiration in a statement. “So ‘Hollywood and Fear’ is about figuring out when to hold on tightly versus when to let go.”

“This isn’t a sad album — it’s about as uplifting as my way of doing things will allow,” she added. “These songs explore worry and doubt and letting go, but those themes are framed brightly.”

Fans will also be able to catch her doing residencies in New York and London this December, where she will perform three albums across three nights. More information on tickets can be found here.

The Oklahoma City Thunder’s Biggest Question And X-Factor For The 2023-24 Season

Every year, there seems to be one NBA team that comes into the season with the expectation that they’ll turn their potential into something great. As we approach the start of the 2023-24 campaign, that team is shaping up to be the Oklahoma City Thunder, which have all the makings of being a juggernaut at some point in the not-too-distant future.

This year, the Western Conference is going to be a nightmare to navigate, which doesn’t exactly bode well for a team looking to make a jump from “fun group of youngsters” to “a legitimate playoff contender in the conference.” But there is a whole lot to like in Oklahoma City, and there’s a chance that they’ll be able to call themselves a playoff team for the first time since 2020.

Biggest Question: Are They Ready?

Try to find one person in the basketball world who isn’t excited about the Thunder. It’s really hard! Last season, Oklahoma City was quite the surprise, as the team went 40-42, earned a playoff berth, and won one game during the Play-In Tournament before getting bounced by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Their offense is a blast, and is led by a legitimate superstar in All-NBA First Team selection Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Jalen Williams was one of the best rookies in the league last year. Josh Giddey took a leap during his second year. There’s a seemingly endless supply of promising young players, all of whom get better and better the longer they spend in Mark Daigneault’s system.

All of this is to say that the Oklahoma City Thunder are a very trendy pick to make some noise in the Western Conference — maybe not compete with the Denver Nuggets and the Phoenix Suns, but be in the playoff hunt all regular season and be a handful once the postseason roll around. But of course, any team can have hype around them. Not every team, however, turn that hype into results, and that’s ultimately the challenge that the Thunder will face.

How do they respond to that first losing streak that brings them down to earth a little bit? Can they survive a major injury to one of their key contributors? Do they have frontcourt depth in the event Chet Holmgren needs some time to get used to life in the NBA? Can they take a step forward on at least one end of the floor — the team was 13th in defensive rating and 16th in offensive rating last year, and while those numbers are solid, there is plenty of room to get better.

The good news is they have a no-doubt star leading the charge and a roster of young, hungry players. Leaps don’t have to happen, but betting on the Thunder to make one seems safe.

X-Factor: Chet Holmgren

Holmgren is probably going to end up being a good professional basketball player. It’s unclear what, exactly, that means — he could end up being a solid and reliable rotation big man who blocks shots and can score a little on offense, or maybe he’ll end up being the sort of superstar-level player who is a perfect running mate alongside Gilgeous-Alexander. The best version of him is a gigantic, two-way nightmare who earns All-Star nods and gets labeled a unicorn.

While he essentially redshirted last season due to an injury he suffered during the offseason, Holmgren is still a rookie who has to get used to all the little things that come from playing 82 games of professional basketball. There will be nights where he’s really good, there will be others where he gets put on a poster and his shot is just not falling. He should be fine no matter what — his work ethic and competitiveness have drawn praise for years. If he’s able to consistently be a positive piece of the puzzle for Oklahoma City, that would be absolutely gigantic, as the one thing the team could really use is a guy with his size imposing his will on a game.
