John Oliver Kicked Off His ‘Last Week Tonight’ Return By Taking The Studios To Task For Dragging Out The Writers Strike

With the writers strike officially over, Last Week Tonight returned on Sunday where John Oliver wasted no time calling out the studios for not negotiating a deal with the writers (and actors) sooner. The fiery late night host spent the bulk of his remarks praising writers and the WGA for holding strong over the past five months, but Oliver could not hold back his anger at how long it took for the AMPTP to do what it should’ve done from the very start.

“So the Writers Guild went on strike and thankfully won, but it took a lot of sacrifices from a lot of people to achieve that,” Oliver said via The Hollywood Reporter. “And while I’m happy that they eventually got a fair deal and immensely proud of what our union accomplished, I’m also furious that it took the studios 148 days to achieve a deal that they could have offered on day f*cking one. But hopefully, this might encourage others, from auto workers to Starbucks baristas to health care providers, whether they are in unions or would like to be, to find power in each other.”

Oliver also took time to praise the writers for powering through the arduous ordeal that was well worth the effort.

“It was an immensely difficult time, not just for them but for everyone else working on this show and many others who could no longer do their jobs,” the Last Week Tonight host said. “And to be clear, this strike happened for good reasons. Our industry has seen its work severely squeezed in recent years. You’ve probably seen stories about writers and actors whose work you may even recognize, routinely not making enough to qualify for health insurance or afford basic needs.”

In a show of solidarity, Oliver wished for the best for the still striking actors to “take what the writers achieved and leverage it to win fair contracts for themselves too.”

“Because the truth is, it takes many people working really hard to make film and TV, all of whom deserve a piece of the pie and for the actors in particular, they cannot come back to work soon enough,” Oliver said in conclusion. He then turned his attention to plowing through all of the news stories he missed including King Charles coronation, the Titan submersible, and of course, Lauren Boebert’s Beetlejuice groping scandal.

“This was Beetlejuice. A show that is quite loudly about death,” Oliver quipped. “I’m just saying, if you’re gonna get your nipples tweaked and your pipes squeaked, you save that shit for Fiddler [on the Roof] like a goddamn adult.”

What Are The Must-See Shows For October 2023?

October has arrived with crisper air and pumpkin-flavored monstrosities at every turn. In your living room, Power, Gen V, and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon are still going strong after last month, but there are many more new and returning shows to navigate, so we are singling out the standout selections. And yes, Hollywood actors are still on strike as of the beginning of October, but the streaming services stacked up so much content that your viewing habits shall not be disturbed.

This month, new seasons of hit shows including Loki, Rick And Morty, Lupin, and The Gilded Age return. The same somehow goes for Frasier because streaming services cannot resist rebooting everything. Mike Flanagan also rolls back into town with the spookiest show on this list, and AMC’s zombie franchise is about to put a long-running spinoff down for the count to make way for Michonne to save Rick Grimes because she’s a badass like that.

Here are the must see shows for October.

Our Flag Means Death: Season 2 (Max series streaming 10/5)

This pleasant little surprise of a show has been (for obvious reasons) compared to What They Do In The Shadows, only with pirates. Rhys Darby’s Captain Stede Bonnet is loosely based upon the 18th century pirate and his swashbuckling adventures. No longer a gentleman, he’s still attempting to win over a crew that could descend into mutiny at any moment. Taika Waititi portrays the infamous Captain Blackbeard, who changes everything. And if you are in the mood for a romcom of the high seas, then you’d best drop anchors.

Lupin: Part 3 (Netflix series streaming 10/5)

The Gentleman Thief returns with Assane in hiding but not for long. He comes back to Paris and proposes a new plan to Claire and Raoul, but of course, the police and Assane’s enemies make this much easier said than done. At least he’ll look stylish while dealing with past ghosts and scheming like hell to escape that framing for murder.

Loki: Season 2 (Disney+ series streaming 10/6)

Everyone’s favorite ice-giant trickster brings back his patented charisma to hopefully resurrect interest in the MCU after a bout of “too much”-inspired fatigue. This season will see Loki learning exactly what it means to have “glorious purpose,” and the show also dives back into the concept of free will while Miss Minutes is probably still trolling everyone. Also, hopefully Loki can navigate into a reality where Mobius remembers him again. Sylvie shall also surface and so will Kang the Conqueror, which could get awkward.

Cooper’s Bar: Season 1 (AMC+/IFC series streaming 10/11)

Kim Wexler fans, rejoice. Rhea Seehorn’s new show will now be streamable stateside. She portrays a major Hollywood a-hole, Kris Latimer, who finds herself in a Tiki bar owned by Cooper Marino, who decides that this could be the joint’s “big break.” Seehorn is a long way from Albuquerque.

The Fall of the House of Usher (Netflix limited series streaming 10/12)

Mike Flanagan fans, get ready. The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass showrunner is back along with Carla Gugino, who will spook your soul right out of your bod and deliver a “consequential” evening to “a collection of stunted hearts” that is the Usher family. Yikes. Do not expect a literal adaptation of the Edgar Allen Poe short story. The story focuses here on the hell created by ruthless siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher, who built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege, and power. Horrible secrets shall surface when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman, portrayed with glee by Gugino.

Frasier: Season 1 (Paramount+ series streaming 10/12)

Those tossed salads and scrambled eggs are heading back to Boston to go enjoy a beer. This sounds familiar in so many ways, and the show that began as a Cheers spinoff is now a revival because no studio can resist resurrecting everything these days. The story will follow Dr. Frasier Crane in a new era of life, where he’s back in his old stomping grounds and forging new relationships and tackling new challenges. The old-new setting is by design, so no one has to really wonder whether certain characters will show up (they most likely won’t). Sadly, that includes the terminally uptight Niles Crane, but we will get to know Frasier’s son, Freddie, who will hopefully give his dad sh*t.

Lessons in Chemistry (Apple TV+ series streaming 10/13)

Brie Larson has never shied away from speaking out for feminist causes, and in this series, she stars in the adaptation of Bonnie Garmus’ bestselling novel, Lessons In Chemistry. Garmus became an overnight “a literary rock star” at age 66 for this impressive debut novel that is all the rage in book clubs everywhere. That will give the show a built-in audience as Larson portrays a brilliant chemist who is fired for a sexist double standard. This leads to an unexpected career change as a cooking show host. This high-profile new platform allows her to sandwich in other nuggets of wisdom for housewives as well as demonstrating how to bake yummy cookies.

Rick and Morty: Season 7 (Adult Swim series returning 10/15)

This show became the subject of much upheaval after Justin Roiland was fired amid a series of disturbing allegations. Adult Swim ended up doing the unthinkable and replacing him as the voice for the leading duo, and as one can hear above, the new versions don’t sound too terribly different. The synopsis also takes the p*ss a bit: “Rick and Morty are back and sounding more like themselves than ever!”

Big Mouth: Season 7 (Netflix series streaming 10/20)

These hormone monsters are somehow still going in this penultimate season, and the characters are now in high school, dealing with change and more puberty. This season, Megan Thee Stallion, Lupita Nyong’o, Padma Lakshmi, Zazie Beetz, Billy Porter, and Stephanie Beatriz join the voice cast.

Fear the Walking Dead: Season 8B (AMC series returning 10/22)

The final episodes of The Walking Dead‘s first spinoff are finally at hand, after we saw June cutting off trigger fingers before the scene shifted to PADRE. Madison’s previous return will be complicated by both happy and unhappy reunions. There’s no word of whether this will include Alicia, but we will definitely see Victor Strand, who returns by stating his intent to help Madison save PADRE. Can he be trusted? We will soon find out, but he and Madison go way back, and he’s also a survivor, so it’s in his best interest to redeem himself. Additionally, Troy — who is beyond redemption — will somehow come back to life, and not as a walker, to shake up everyone’s little world.

The Gilded Age: Season 2 (HBO series streaming 10/29)

Those who adored Downton Abbey adored this series that begins in 1882 New York City, where a great upheaval is in motion on both a financial and cultural level. Old traditions are replaced by old standards, and rural Pennsylvania native Marian Brook must adjust to life in the city while being trapped in conflict between her old-money aunt and newly rich neighbor who climbed society’s ladders as a railroad tycoon.

Taylor Swift And Blake Lively’s Friendship Was Accidentally Predicted By ‘Gossip Girl’

Welcome to New York (well, New Jersey), it’s been waiting for Taylor Swift and her celebrity friends.

The pop culture-dominating pop star attended the Kansas City Chiefs vs. New York Jets game at MetLife Stadium on Sunday to cheer on her rumored boyfriend Travis Kelce with Hugh Jackman, Sabrina Carpenter, Ryan Reynolds, and Blake Lively. It was a full-circle moment for Swift and Lively, whose friendship was predicted years ago on Gossip Girl.

In the season four episode, “The Kids Are Not All Right,” which aired on January 24, 2011, Blair (played by Leighton Meester) asks Serena (Lively) why she’s packed so much stuff. “I had no idea where my PI mission was going to take me. I had to be prepared,” Serena answers, to which Blair responds, “For a night with Taylor Swift?” Yes, in fact.

The coincidence was noticed by @Raeflora1:

Lively has been pals with Swift since 2015. They’ve held koalas together, and Lively and Reynolds’ daughter can be heard on “Gorgeous” from Reputation. The actress even directed her “I Bet You Think About Me” video music. “The reddest video EVER is out now. Directed by @blakelively who SMASHED it just like I smashed this cake,” Swift wrote on then-Twitter when the video dropped.

Xoxo.

Beyoncé Is Bringing Her Massive ‘Renaissance World Tour’ To Movie Theaters With A New Concert Film

The two biggest concert tours of the year, without question, are Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour and Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour. Swift’s tour is hitting theaters via a concert film releasing soon, and now Beyoncé’s trek is getting the same treatment: Today (October 2), she announced Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé.

As USA Today notes, “In addition to concert footage, the film will include portions of the visual album for Beyoncé’s latest album Renaissance and a documentary-style account of the album and tour’s creation.” The movie is set to his theaters soon, on December 1, and tickets can be purchased here.

In the trailer, Beyoncé says, “When I am performing, I am nothing but free. The goal for this tour was to create a place where everyone is free and no one is judged. You’re unique. Start over, start fresh, create the new — that’s what the Renaissance is about.”

The video description of the trailer’s YouTube upload reads, “RENAISSANCE: A FILM BY BEYONCÉ accentuates the journey of RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR, from its inception, to the opening in Stockholm, Sweden, to the finale in Kansas City, Missouri. It is about Beyoncé’s intention, hard work, involvement in every aspect of the production, her creative mind and purpose to create her legacy, and master her craft. Jets-Chiefs Ended With A Controversial Hold And A Patrick Mahomes Slide That Was Important To Some

When the Kansas City Chiefs took a 17-0 lead in the first quarter against the New York Jets, the expectation was that we would be headed for a blowout with a lot of discussion from Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth about Taylor Swift being at MetLife Stadium.

However, Zach Wilson played the best two quarters of his NFL career in the second and third, while Patrick Mahomes played terribly for the same stretch, and the Jets managed to pull even with the Chiefs at 20-20 in the third quarter. Kansas City would drive for a go-ahead field goal in the fourth and the Jets offense began to sputter again, handing the Chiefs the ball back on a fumbled snap from Wilson at midfield.

Still, the Jets had a shot at getting the ball back, forcing two third downs with more than 20 yards to go. The first was picked up by Mahomes’ legs on a 25-yard scramble — with an illegal contact that would’ve given them an auto first anyways — albeit one that Jets fans will quickly point out featured a very apparent hold on the left side of the line.

From there, the Jets again forced a 3rd-and-20, this time forcing an interception that was wiped off the board by a controversial holding call on Sauce Gardner that had Robert Saleh losing his mind on the sidelines.

There’s certainly contact, but it’s from both players and there doesn’t appear to be a real grab from Gardner, rather some hand-fighting as they run up the field. However, in real time it’s not hard to see how it looked like a hold, particularly as Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s head drops down, and to the Jets chagrin, the flag flew.

After getting through the 2-minute warning, the Chiefs again faced a third down and, for the second time, it was Mahomes taking off to pick it up. This time he got past the sticks and could’ve walked into the end zone, but that would’ve given the Jets a minuscule chance at a comeback, so he did what fantasy owners and Chiefs bettors didn’t want to see and slid down at the 2 to ensure the W.

The Chiefs closed as 7.5-point favorites (and were as high as 9.5 early in the week) and a touchdown would’ve covered every number, but Mahomes doesn’t care for your bets or fantasy matchups and is just trying to emerge with a win, taking a bow after his game-clinching run (but not score).

A Snoop Dogg-Voiced Spam Call Company Has Reportedly Been Named In A Lawsuit By Frustrated Consumers

Across generations, Snoop Dogg is one of the most popular rappers. His likeness, lyrics, and catchphrases have ended up at the center of several hilarious moments in pop culture. However, one company’s use of the “Beautiful” musician’s voice has been the bane of some folks’ existence.

According to AllHipHop, Bottom Line Concepts’ telemarketing efforts using Snoop Dogg’s voice have reportedly landed them in a hated lawsuit. In court documents obtained by the outlet, an individual named Qiana Martin has sued the company for their excessive outreach efforts. The company made attempts to solicit business from Martin supposedly without expressed consent. When Martin did not answer a telephone call on August 30, a message dictated by Snoop Dogg was left on Martin’s voicemail.

A representative from Martin’s legal team claimed Martin was subject to “concrete harm” from the unsolicited communication. Martin is seeking damages for invasion of privacy and nuisance, as well as Martin’s incurred legal costs. The team notes that Martin is entitled to a minimum of $500 per call. However, they asserted Martin should receive $1,500 per call as the company’s continued actions were intentional despite Martin’s lack of engagement with the company and expressed disapproval.

Kanye West Called Cardi B An ‘Illuminati Plant’ In A Leaked Recording, So She Clapped Back With A Clip Of Her Own

In 2020, Kanye West took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his frustrations with record labels by leaking his contract with Universal Music Group. But that explosive moment wouldn’t be the last time a music label would be the center of one of the “Praise God” rapper’s random rants. In a now-viral clip, West took aim at Atlantic Records and one of their star acts, Cardi B.

During a phone call, West called out a host of industry professionals in what appears to be leaked footage from a documentary. “Cardi B is a plant by the Illuminati,” declared West.

He added, “She doesn’t write her raps. She’s just there to sound as ignorant as possible. She’s literally replaced Nicki Minaj purposely… She thinks it’s a blessing from the universe, it ain’t no f*cking blessing.”

After Cardi received wind of his statement, she subtly responded to her “Hot Sh*t” collaborator with her own clip. Last year, West sat down with Hollywood Unlocked’s Jason Lee. During their chat, he shared his admiration for Cardi.

“I’ve always believed in her since she was on the show,” said West, seemingly referring to her time on the reality show Love & Hip-Hop: New York.

Cardi B is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
