New mom vents frustration over American maternity leave in comparison to the rest of the world

Have you ever tried giving birth? It’s not for the weak. In fact, the entire process leading up to birthing an entire human out of your body isn’t for the weak. Being pregnant changes and stretches parts of your body you didn’t know existed. Even the volume of blood that pumps through your heart increases.

Your joints loosen, your hips spread and for some reason, your nose and lips can spread, too. And even though your nose looks big enough to stick your fist into, you can’t breathe through it efficiently. Pregnancy is a lot. But birth, whether vaginally or via cesarean is like running a marathon with little to no training. Then come the hormones, sleep deprivation and healing.

But if you’re working in America when you happen to go through that life-changing experience, you can hang up any thoughts of having adequate time to heal and bond with your baby. In many instances, you’ve got six weeks—and those weeks may or may not be paid. (The U.S. is one of the only countries that doesn’t federally guarantee paid maternity leave, and most states don’t mandate paid maternity leave, either.)

Anna Gantt uploaded a video to TikTok expressing her frustration at America’s maternity leave policies. In her video, Gantt is walking her dog and her newborn child in disbelief that new moms generally get six weeks of paid maternity leave in the United States when other countries get up to 18 months.

“I live in Georgia, in the United States, and it’s not legal to separate a puppy or a kitten from its mother until they are 8 weeks old,” Gantt vents. “So how, how is it okay to leave a human at 6 weeks old? My body is not even healed. I just now can go on a walk with my dog and my infant.”

She makes some pretty good points. Humans who birth babies aren’t cleared to return to normal light activities until a minimum of six weeks but it can be longer if you have complications. Maybe it’s time for the United States to address its maternity leave issue.

American maternity leave is actually insane…… because WHO decided six weeks was even close to acceptable for an infant and mom to be seperated? WTF #maternityleave #fyp #fypシ

Woman hosts ‘living funeral’ for her dying sister and calls the experience ‘magical’

What do you do when you or a loved one becomes terminally ill? When the inescapable end all but sends a morbid telegram announcing its arrival? Do you “go gentle into that good night,” filling the final days with solemn reverence and aching nostalgia? Or do you go out with a bang, choosing instead to savor whatever else life still has to offer?

For Heidi Satterthwaite, the choice was obvious.

Her sister, Jenna Satterthwaite, shared on BBC’s “Woman’s Hour” that Heidi had been diagnosed with a rare type of cancer known as myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), which occurs when blood-forming cells found in bone marrow are abnormal, back in 2018.

Before her death, Heidi made a heartfelt request to her sister—that they throw a party with all of their family and friends.

Jenna was happy to fulfill her sister’s wish and began sending out invitations. To their surprise, 200 people showed up, many traveling long distances and canceling plans to show up and say their goodbyes.

The “massive event” was very akin to a wedding, Jenna recalled, filled with the merriment of dancing, an “explosive playlist,” heartfelt speech and catered food. Heidi and her husband even closed out the night by dancing to the same song they danced at for their own wedding.

living funeral, funeral costs

“It was just this magical and pain-filled celebration of her life,” Jenna told BBC. “I would describe it as an exclamation point at the end of a sentence. The sentence of her life.”

After Heidi’s death, Jenna took to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to share a touching poem titled “Advice for the Dying,” created in part to encourage others with “the curse of advance notice,” to host a party, not a funeral, because funerals aren’t as “fun.”

As Alexandra Keeler, contributor for Big Think, brilliantly lays out, the concept of “living funerals” might not exactly be mainstream, but it has been around for a long time. Though the exact origins are unknown, living funerals have historical roots both in indigenous and ancient Japanese cultures, who would use the tradition to gain closure, make amends, show respect and generally provide ease of passage.

The idea was also incorporated in Mitch Albom’s popular “Tuesdays with Morrie.” As Morrie reflects on his colleague’s passing, he says, “What a waste. All those people saying all those wonderful things, and Irv never got to hear any of it.” So Morrie decides to gather a small group of friends and family to honor their beloved Irv.

As religion takes on less significance for many, it’s not surprising that more and more people are taking an interest in creating their own customized rituals for saying goodbye, whether that’s trading the formality for more festive, personal traditions during the funeral itself, or conducting a living funeral that allows the ailing person (and the ones they’ll leave behind) some measure of autonomy and joy during an otherwise bleak and gloomy situation.

For Jenna, giving Heidi a living funeral “was a moment to pause and acknowledge a beautiful life.”

“We don’t do that often. We’re bad at celebrating. We’re always looking to the next thing and shifting goalposts,” she said. “So it was really special to come together and kind of close that sentence as a group and say, ‘This was her life, she lived it well.’ Exclamation point.”

It’s no easy task to say goodbye to a loved one, but choosing to make it an event can be helpful for everyone.

Diane Keaton Reflects On How She ‘Used To Be Young’ While Once Again Sharing Love For Miley Cyrus’ Music

Miley Cyrus recently dropped her new single, “Used To Be Young,” where she reflected on the headline-making moments of her past. She also has some famous faces who are loving the track, including actress Diane Keaton, who shared an Instagram post about it.

Complete with old B&W photos of Keaton’s younger self, she set the slideshow to the song.

“HERE’S TO MILEY,” Keaton captioned with a heart emoji and tagged the pop star.

Because of this, Cyrus eventually saw Keaton’s post and expressed her love.

“I appreciate you deeply,” Cyrus commented. “This is so moving and exactly why I made this song. I said throughout the journey of writing it over the last 18 months, ‘all I want is Diane Keaton to dance to it’ and this is even more magical. I love you. Thank you.”

It’s not the first time that Keaton has been promoting Cyrus on her social media. Earlier this year, she was incredibly excited about the release of “Flowers” — posting a video of herself dancing along to it while roaming around her backyard.

“YOUR INCREDIBLE SONG GAVE ME A REASON TO DANCE IN MY OWN BACKYARD!” Keaton captioned the “Flowers” reaction.

Noel Gallagher Hilariously Answered A Fan Question That An Oasis Reunion Would Depend On Their Hair

In a recent Q&A at Kingston’s The Rose Theatre, Noel Gallagher was faced with an audience question about which past Oasis members would be included if a reunion actually happened.

“So me… Liam… Well, it’s a funny thing because we’re all at a certain age now,” Gallagher said. “Hair was a thing in Oasis, so we’ll have to see what everybody’s hair is looking like.”

“I’m in no matter what,” he added, before pointing out that his hair is still good. “This is not f*cking going anywhere… I don’t know. Look. Me, Liam and a load of f*cking fit birds.”

Fans had their own thoughts about who else would make the cut, throwing out their hopes to see Bonehead, Gem, Whitey, and more.

This follows the recent influx of reunion rumors swirling that both Noel and Liam would return as Oasis. Earlier this year, Noel revealed that he would “never say never,” but the two brothers then seemed to go back to feuding, with Liam calling him “f*cking delusional.”

But, even Blur’s Damon Albarn thinks there is hope for Oasis. “I can guarantee they’re going to reform,” he previously told The Sun. “In fact, I’ve put money on it.”

Until that day ever comes, fans can check out a fan-shot video of Noel Gallagher answering the Oasis question here.

Here Is WWE’s Emotional Tribute To Bray Wyatt From The Start Of SmackDown

WWE used Friday Night SmackDown this week to pay tribute to a pair of individuals who recently passed away. On Wednesday, the legendary Terry Funk died at 79, and one day later, Triple H announced the tragic news that Windham Rotunda, known to wrestling fans as Bray Wyatt, died at 36.

Rotunda had not appeared on television for WWE in months after being abruptly removed from the card at WrestleMania 39, and while reports indicated he was getting closer and closer to a return from the illness that made that happen, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful.com reported that he suffered a heart attack on Thursday. The entire wrestling community paid tribute to a life lost far too young, and unsurprisingly, SmackDown started with the entire WWE locker room — along with former Wyatt Family member Erick Rowan — honoring them with a 10 bell salute.

From there, WWE jumped into a video package that remembered Rotunda for his life in and out of the ring.

When the cameras cut back to the roster standing on stage, a round of applause broke out. And in a beautiful moment in the face of an unspeakable tragedy, the crowd began singing “he’s got the whole world in his hands” before the lights went out and a single rocking chair went under a spotlight.

Here are 5 things a child therapist says he doesn’t do while playing with his kids

Being a parent is both oddly unique and similar for all who embark on that life journey. You’re in a state of constant worry that you’re messing up in one way or another, while simultaneously knowing that you’re doing your best to raise good humans. Not everyone can be an expert in child development, and that doesn’t mean they’re doing anything wrong.

But when you’ve got the inside scoop from someone who does have a deep understanding of child development, you pay attention. A child therapist has shared a list of things that he never does while playing with his children. Even if you have this insider knowledge, a refresher like this one can be helpful.

Joshua Terhune is a child therapist and father of two who keeps his list of “don’ts” in mind when engaging in child-led play with his children. Here are five things he says he avoids while playing:

1. Asking questions while playing with his kids

Terhune explains that asking questions brings children out of the moment and forces them to perform instead of play organically.

2. Commanding or demanding a behavior change

The therapist explains that commanding or demanding a change in behaviors can raise the tension between child and parent. Instead, he attempts to ignore or redirect unwanted behaviors from his children.

3. Criticizing or judging their play

This involves not commenting on how much he likes a drawing or what they’ve built and focusing instead on the process they’ve used. Terhune says praising something as good means that you also have the power to say something is bad, which could deter the child from doing things for their own enjoyment instead focusing on what will make the parent happy.

4. Using sarcasm or mockery

He explains how using sarcasm or teasing can hurt children’s feelings and “stifle their spirit.” Terhune explains, “they have very, very, very little time when they feel in control,” so play is where they’re in charge and can feel a sense of control over their lives.

5. Allowing distractions to enter play

Terhune says he uses child-led playtime for mutual enjoyment of time together without the distractions of screens. The father of two says that having a screen present can break the immersion in play, so he avoids it as much as possible.

Report: The Niners Are Trading Trey Lance To The Cowboys For A Mid-Round Pick

The Trey Lance era in San Francisco has finally come to a conclusion. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Niners are trading the former No. 3 overall pick to the Dallas Cowboys for a mid-round pick just days after Sam Darnold was named the backup to Brock Purdy.

Despite trading three first-round picks to move up and select Lance in 2021, the Niners never saw him play a full season, and he’ll leave the team after playing in just eight games. A season-ending leg injury in Week 2 last season led to a series of events that saw Purdy, a seventh-round pick in 2022, ascend to the starting quarterback position. Lance entered training camp competing to win the starting job, or at least come away as the clear backup, but he could not beat out Purdy or Darnold, the latter of whom San Francisco signed this offseason.

The Cowboys will pay a small price to take a chance on a talented young quarterback that hasn’t had many reps at the NFL level. Dallas has a clear franchise quarterback in Dak Prescott, while backup Cooper Rush led the team to a 4-1 record last season. Lance will have to earn his way onto the field if he’s going to play, but will escape the pressure of being the guy San Francisco envisioned him being and gets the opportunity to learn from Mike McCarthy, who has a history of developing young quarterbacks.

The Latest Bronny James Update Indicates He Should Be Able To ‘Return To Basketball In The Very Near Future’

Bronny James, the eldest son of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, went into cardiac arrest earlier this year while playing basketball. A true freshman student-athlete at USC, James received an outpouring of support in the aftermath of the incident, and his father eventually announced that he was doing well while he was on the road to recovery.

It’s been a few weeks since LeBron gave that update, and on Friday evening, we got a bit of good news regarding his ability to play basketball going forward. In a statement from a family spokesperson, the cause of the incident was announced, along with the fact that Broony is expected to be able to return to the court “in the very near future.”

After a comprehensive initial evaluation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center led by Dr. Merije Chukumerije and follow-up evaluations at the Mayo Clinic led by Dr. Michael J. Ackerman and Atlantic Health/Morristown Medical Center led by Dr. Matthew W. Martinez, the probable cause of Mr. James’ sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) has been identified. It is an anatomically and functionally significant Congenital Heart Defect which can and will be treated.

We are very confident in Bronny’s full recovery and return to basketball in the very near future. We will continue to provide updates to media and respectfully reiterate the family’s request for privacy.

Obviously, the most important thing here is that Bronny will be able to recover from this, but it’s great to hear that he’ll be able to resume his basketball career sometime down the road. The former 4-star recruit is projected to be a first-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Green Day Gave A ‘Nimrod’ Makeover To Trump’s Mugshot For New Merch That Will Benefit A Good Cause

It’s been a wild week for mugshots, as both Rudy Giuliani and Trump’s have both surfaced.

Because of this, Green Day decided to get in on the joke — never one to shy away from political statements. Taking a more comedic tone on it all, the band replaced their classic Nimrod cover with Trump’s mugshot behind the word instead.

Fans can now buy the shirts, as the band revealed on Instagram. And they’re going to a good cause in the wake of other recent news. n

“Good Riddance. The ultimate Nimrod shirt is available for 72 hours only. Limited edition shirt proceeds will be donated to T̶h̶e̶ ̶G̶i̶u̶l̶i̶a̶n̶i̶ ̶L̶e̶g̶a̶l̶ ̶D̶e̶f̶e̶n̶s̶e̶ ̶F̶u̶n̶d̶ [crossed out] @greatergoodmusiccharity, which brings food to those affected by the Maui wildfires,” they captioned.

However, despite the band literally having an album called American Idiot, people in the replies were (somehow) surprised by the move. “Stay out of politics Green Day,” one user wrote.

Meanwhile, fans had thoughts as well. “Everyone in the comments shocked that Green Day dislikes Trump,” another person added, in response to the comments that were against the move.

Check out Green Day’s post above.
