Do you guys ever think about multi-million paydays? Margot Robbie does.
Variety reports that the actress “stands to make roughly $50 million in salary and box office bonuses” for starring in and producing Barbie, the global hit that decimated the world’s supply of pink paint. If true, that’s one of the biggest single-movie salaries ever. The Greta Gerwig movie is up to $1.18 billion, including $526.3 million at the domestic box office; it will soon pass The Super Mario Bros. Movie to become the highest-grossing film of the year (it’s already in the top 25 all-time).
In addition to bringing the popular children’s toy to glittering life, Robbie produced the film through her production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, which she founded in 2014 with her now-husband, Tom Ackerley, and friends Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr. The goal of the company was to tell women’s stories on screen and support women creators behind the scenes.
LuckyChap is also behind two Oscar winners, I, Tonya and Promising Young Woman; the Harley Quinn spin-off, Birds of Prey; and an adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel My Year of Rest and Relaxation, possibly directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
A Barbie sequel has been’t announced yet, but if (when) it does get made, Warner Bros. Pictures better prepare the dump trucks full of money (is there a Sanitation Worker Barbie?) for Robbie and Gerwig. Their job isn’t beach, it’s making good movies.
Over the weekend, the Jonas Brothers played their two-night run at NYC’s Yankee Stadium — and it included a truly massive setlist. With 60 songs, the band took fans through all five of their albums, from the Disney days to the present era.

Vladimir Putin is still in it to win it, but as time wears forth, Ukraine’s determination does not bode well for the former Russian “superman.” His war began with troops injuring themselves in order to escape battlefield-hell on earth, and the situation has not improved. After running out of replacements, the Kremlin apparently greenlit the drafting of war protestors, and from there, Putin has reportedly pitched a fit and increased fines for those who resist the draft. And he cannot be happy about the latest significant news coming out of Russia.
CBS News reports that the Russian ruble has fallen to a new wartime low, certainly due in part to the fallout of Western sanctions over Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. At this point, it’s “now worth less than one cent,” and the downfall accelerated in January to the point where one-third of the currency has evaporated. Oddly enough, the ruble rose in 2022, but those days are over, and Putin’s talking heads aren’t pleased. One of them popped off on air and blamed Russia’s central bank, via Reuters:
Popular pro-Kremlin television presenter Vladimir Solovyev, whose Rossiya 1 shows are watched by millions of Russians, launched into an aggressive, expletive-ridden criticism of the central bank late last week.
“…every other country is laughing at us, at our rouble being one of the three weakest currencies, thanks to the ‘genius’ policy of the central bank,” he said.
Maybe we’ll receive some dour comments from Putin soon as well. That is, if he’s not busy hanging in his pickle hideout and fretting over cabbage.
Despite big name stars like Hawaii native Jason Momoa warning people not to vacation in Maui while wildfires continue to cause massive death and destruction, Paris Hilton posed for photos not even 30 miles away from the ongoing disaster.
According to the Daily Mail, Hilton was spotted frolicking with her husband Carter Reum and their son on Saturday while a “city of tombstones” was forming just miles away:
Hilton was pictured at a resort in Wailea, only 30 miles from the devastated town of Lahaina, as the death toll rose to 96, making the disaster the worst wildfire in the United States in 100 years. A smaller fire, in south Maui’s Kihei area, was still burning on Sunday, only five miles from her vacation spot.
The 42-year-old heiress arrived on the island on Tuesday with her husband Carter Reum and eight-month-old Phoenix – the same day the wildfires ravaged the historic town of Lahaina and burnt it to the ground.
The Daily Mail reports that the Hawaii Tourism Authority “asked tourists to leave” a day after Hilton’s arrival. The hotel heiress is now being slammed on Twitter by people who can’t believe she’s still on the island staging photoshoots.
“Paris Hilton is vacationing in Maui at a resort 30 min from Lahaina,” one user tweeted. “Imagine watching thousands of ppl lose their homes, loved ones, families etc and then expecting them to SERVE YOU DRINKS WHILE U FROLIC ON THE BEACH INFRONT OF THEM OMG.”
“Paris Hilton heard about the Maui wildfire devastation and said, ‘That’s hot,’” another user wrote.
“Paris Hilton literally had the whole world to choose from, but…” tweeted another angry user.
“Wow. Read the room,” Vegas radio personality Heidi Harris commented.
If we define the modern superhero movie’s genesis being Richard Donner’s 1978 Superman, it’s kind of weird third in line for a Dc movie, after Superman II, was Swamp Thing. And not only that, the director of this franchise would have only three movies under his belt and all of them are very graphic horror movies, Like seriously, imagining a modern studio executive watching The Last House on the Left and saying, “Yes, this is who we want for our new comic book franchise,” is a pretty funny thought. A Nightmare on Elm Street, which would follow Swamp Thing, had that kind of winking fun in it that Craven became more known for. To be fair, his prior films do, too. The third act of The Last House on the Left basically turns into Home Alone as the criminals are slowly tortured by house booby traps. But, that gets a little lost when compared to the extremely brutal violence during the rest of that movie (Though, it is also kind of funny Donner had just come off The Omen when he made Superman. But comparing the tone of The Omen to The Hills Have Eyes is like comparing eating a nice steak dinner to eating a cracked, waterlogged tennis ball.)
It was October of 2021 and I was in the midst of my marathon of horror films. I was looking down a list of Wes Craven films I hadn’t seen, or hadn’t seen in a long time and came upon Swamp Thing, a movie I hadn’t seen since it was a constant on HBO in the ’80s. I wound up renting it on iTunes and it was one of the worst looking things I had ever seen. Worse than DVD quality. It was so bad most of the movie felt like just big blocky pixels, to the point I’m not sure why I watched the whole thing, but I did. (I think Shout Factory had a Blu out at this time that was fairly well received, but I did not own this Blu.)
MVD has, now, released a brand new 4K (which came out this week) and it’s a gorgeous thing. In a weird way it’s almost too good. There are times you can make out dirt and particles from filming on location in (at least what looks like) actual swamps in South Carolina. Anyway, I love it when a disc like this comes out and it feels like I’m watching a movie I’ve seen before for the first time. Especially a movie like Swamp Thing, which I find so bizarre that it exists in the first place. (And I’ll find it bizarre if James Mangold’s version actually happens.)
Speaking of bizarre, this set includes the longer, international cut. Now, I know I had never seen that, so that’s what I watched. Turns out, it’s barely longer, but there is a moment I was thinking, “I truly don’t remember this much nudity during Swamp Thing. Looking up the differences of the two cuts, well, yes, that’s about it.
Ray Wise (You know, Leland Palmer from Twin Peaks) plays Alec Holland, a scientist working on a formula that allows plants to grow quickly and almost anywhere. However, a side effect of the formula is it is extremely explosive. Adrienne Barbeau is Alice Cable, sent by the government to help with the project after one of the scientists disappears. Louis Jourdan (big fan of him in both Gigi and Octopussy) is having a great time as the evil Anton Arcane who wants the formula for himself, theorizing that it has supernatural abilities that can turn humans into hybrid super-fighters.
During Anton Arcane’s raid, Alec is doused with the formula, is set on fire, and jumps into the swamp, presumed dead. As you might tell from the title of the movie, he is not dead. He turns into the Swamp Thing, which is basically just Dick Durock walking around in a rubber suit that looks probably a little better than you’d expect. The rest of the movie is Swamp Thing punching bad guys as Anton Arcane keeps experimenting with the formula on his own henchmen and himself to some pretty gross results, which does have a feeling of Craven’s earlier work sprinkled in here. Also, it’s always funny to remind myself, “Oh, this is what a PG movie was in 1982.”
Honestly, I do think Swamp Thing was an interesting turn in Craven’s career. He had to find a way to display horror for mass audiences with only a recommendation for “parental guidance.” (I use “mass” lightly here because Swamp Thing apparently did so poorly at the initial box office that its gross is unknown. The movie only became a “success” after its seemingly daily run on cable.) And it is interesting Craven’s next movie, A Nightmare on Elm Street, would gross more than all his previous films combined. Swamp Thing is an oddity – but the good news is it’s never looked better.
Many drinkers believe that this is sweet spot when it comes to maturing tequila — it’s gained flavors like caramel, vanilla, and oak while still maintaining its fruity, vegetal, agave notes. Too much time in the rick house heat and tequila can become pretty syrupy, losing all sense of the agave.
These days, there are a lot of añejo tequilas on the market and they aren’t all worth your time (or money, as this is the most expensive expression of most brands). To find the best choices, we turned to our friendly neighborhood mixologists for help. We asked a handful of well-known bartenders to tell us about their picks for the best añejo tequilas to sip right now.
Keep scrolling to see all of their choices.
Siembra Azul Añejo
Siembra Azul
Alex Dominguez, head bartender at Bar Calico in New York City
Siembra Azul Añejo is a great añejo on the market. Many añejos get too heavy-handed with their caramel and vanilla notes and get a finished product closer to bourbon than tequila.
Tasting Notes:
Siembra Azul does a wonderful job of making sure that tequila is at the forefront which means it’s slightly more vegetal. Peppery and oaky, it’s a great añejo to sip on with a large cube in the summer.
Mijente Añejo Gran Reserva
Mijente
Anthony Clanton, food and beverage director at Lindens in New York City
Mijente Añejo is my favorite sipping tequila for a cool summer night. It’s a full-bodied añejo that’s complex but not too heavy, perfect to sip on a summer night under the stars.
Tasting Notes:
The aging process in oak barrels gives it a unique flavor with cacao and butterscotch notes.
Siete Leguas Añejo
Siete Leguas
Alex Barbatsis, bartender at The Whistler in Chicago
I enjoy a nice pour of Siete Leguas Añejo on a summer evening, or even just after dinner. It’s an easy sipper from one of the best tequila producers so this one’s a no-brainer for me.
Tasting Notes:
It’s aged 18 months in American Oak barrels giving it a nice caramel tone with bright orange notes.
Cincoro Añejo
Cincoro
Shiva Thapa, head bartender at Miller & Lux in San Francisco
I’d say Cincoro Añejo is the best sipping tequila for summer. The agave is unmasked and despite the oak aging still remains fresh, clean, and zesty.
Tasting Notes:
Aromas of cinnamon-spiced cedar leads to a coating of melted toffee butter. A layer of toasted coconut and baked pineapple leave a trace of flavor and perfume behind on the palate.
Don Fulano Añejo
Don Fulano
Thomas Mizuno-Moore, senior beverage manager at Aba in Miami
We’re always excited when we can feature Don Fulano Añejo, which we currently use in our Añejo Cadillac Margarita on the Reserve menu. Don Fulano has been growing agave for generations and they’ve carried over that expertise into their tequila production.
Tasting Notes:
Their añejo expression has all the depth and complexity you expect from barrel aging, but it still holds on to that core flavor of agave that makes the margarita sing.
There is nothing better than Casa Noble Añejo to sip on a summer evening. Its complex and delicious taste comes from resting in French oak barrels for two years.
Tasting Notes:
Slow-cooked agave notes help to avoid the extreme sweetness that comes from modern añejo tequilas.
Tapatio Añejo
Tapatio
Cristhian Rodriguez, bar director at elNico’s in Brooklyn, New York
This summer, Tapatio Añejo is one of my favorite tequilas to enjoy neat, on the rocks, or mixed. Fourth generation tequila distiller, Carlos Camarena, made Tapatio from a selection of only the ripest blue agave plants and using equipment from his family’s original distillery at La Alteña, in Los Altos, Jalisco.
Tasting Notes:
Personally, I love its bright golden color, subtle vanilla notes, and very agave-forward taste regardless of the 18-month aging which usually turns me away from many aged tequilas. It is lightly spiced, unlike other rich woody añejos, yet mouth-coating with a touch of herbaceousness and red pepper spicy finish. An añejo that is drinkable for a Sunday afternoon or weekend night.
Fortaleza Añejo Tequila is a highly respected and premium tequila that’s perfect for sipping on a cool summer evening. Produced in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico, Fortaleza uses traditional methods in their production process, including stone milling the agave and fermenting in wooden tanks. Fortaleza Añejo is aged for 18 months in American oak barrels, which imparts a beautiful golden color to the spirit. The aging process also contributes to its complex flavor profile.
Tasting Notes:
When you sip Fortaleza Añejo, you can expect to taste a rich blend of flavors. It starts with a sweet and creamy agave taste, followed by notes of caramel, vanilla, and butterscotch. There are also hints of citrus, cooked fruits, and a subtle spice that adds complexity. The finish is long and smooth, with a pleasant oakiness. What makes Fortaleza Añejo great is its complexity and balance. The sweet, creamy, and fruity flavors are comforting and warming, while the citrus and spice add a refreshing element. It’s a tequila that invites you to take your time and savor each sip, making it perfect for a relaxed summer evening.
Herradura Añejo
Herradura
Lorenzo Zappacosta, restaurant and bar manager at Manetta’s Bar in London
The best tequila to sip on a cool summer evening is Herradura Añejo 100% Agave aged 24-25 months in ex-American whiskey casks. It’s a delicate, yet complex sipping tequila for warm weather or any time of year.
Tasting Notes:
This gives it a lovely taste of vanilla, rich oak, caramel, cinnamon spice, and dried fruit. If you are añejo lover, Herradura Añejo is a smooth, delicately sweet option, boasting notes of cooked agave, vanilla, and fruit.
My favorite añejo tequila would be Don Julio 1942. Although it’s a little more on the expensive side, it’s a very smooth tequila and the flavors combined make it the best in my opinion. I think the best way to drink Don Julio 1942 is with one big ice cube and a slice of orange.
Tasting Notes:
You get hints of vanilla and caramel as soon as you put your nose to the glass. A little squeeze of the orange compliments the anejo well.
Teremana Añejo
Teremana
Resa Mueller, bartender at R&D Philly in Philadelphia
What I look for when winding down during the summer nights with a tequila is the flavor profile in play. Ideally, you want clean and straightforward agave notes backed up by something that makes it a little interesting to play around with. Teremana is made in small batches with attention given to the integrity of the agave and the entire production process, which is important to consider given that agave plants themselves take so long to mature and are therefore uniquely expressive of the land and climate in which they grow. All this with a super approachable price point? It’s a no-brainer.
Tasting Notes:
The Teremana Añejo is deep and rich with complex caramel and vanilla notes that form an elegant base for layered and sophisticated sipping cocktails on a cool summer evening.
123 Añejo
123
Graham Christie, bar manager at The Gem in Bolton Landing, New York
For añejo tequila, I am reaching for 123 Añejo. The agave is sustainably cultivated and harvested, then aged for 18 months in white oak. This result is a flavorful tequila perfect for mixing or sipping neat.
Tasting Notes:
Their care and attention to detail is noticeable in the final product as this tequila is a delight to drink. Vanilla, citrus, pepper, and a slight mineral quality make this a unique flavor experience.
Tequila Ocho Añejo
Tequila Ocho
Pedro Pozo, beverage director of Grupo Bakan in Miami
My favorite añejo tequila to sip is Tequila Ocho. What stands out about Tequila Ocho Añejo is that although it has been aged for over a year it still maintains a subtle delicacy that makes it great for sipping tequila.
Tasting Notes:
It has all that you crave in a great anejo with notes of toffee and caramel interlaced with the agave sweetness.
Clase Azul Añejo
Clase Azul
Mercedes Cowper, certified sommelier and bar manager at Round Robin Bar in Washington, DC
The Clase Azul Añejo is lighter-bodied with a pale amber color and smooth enough to sip neat or on ice. The intricate detail of the hand-painted bottle is also a great conversation starter for your guests.
Tasting Notes:
The aged tequila has caramel, vanilla, toast, citrus peel, cinnamon, and roasted hazelnut flavors.
Before he passed away last week at 64 years old, Dale Gribble voice actor Johnny Hardwick recorded “a couple” of episodes of the King of the Hill revival coming to Hulu. That’s according to TV Line, which added, “it remains unclear if another actor will be brought in to finish what Hardwick started in the revival.” It’s impossible to have King of the Hill without Dale Gribble, and it’s impossible to have Dale Gribble without Johnny Hardwick’s unmistakable paranoid drawl, so it will be interesting to see what happens.
“Johnny Hardwick was an incredibly beloved member of the King of the Hill family, whose tremendous talent, brilliant humor, and friendship will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to work with him over the past 25 years,” 20th Television Animation and Hulu said in a statement when news of Hardwick’s death broke. “Our deepest condolences go out to his friends and family as we mourn the loss of one of the animation greats. His voice gave life to one of our most iconic characters, and he will be truly missed.”
The new King of the Hill is expected to premiere on Hulu in 2024. Until then, please enjoy some of Hardwick’s finest work as Dale.
This weekend saw the Jonas Brothers bring their tour, dubbed simply The Tour, to an iconic New York City venue: Yankee Stadium. At the second show, they linked up with another NYC fixture: Jimmy Fallon.
One thing photos from the event make clear is that while The Tonight Show has been off the air, Fallon has settled back into his beard. When he got on stage, he asked the audience, “How would you all like to be in the world’s biggest karaoke party for two minutes?” He then played the studio version of The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” and sang along as the audience joined in, too.
“Mr. Brightside” was a major debut for The Killers in 2003, when it was a top-10 hit in the US and UK. It’s racked up over 1.8 billion streams on Spotify and is one of the defining songs of its era, making it a crowd-pleasing choice for Fallon.
Fallon’s beard first made waves around this time last year, when he wore it to the MTV Video Music Awards and had a lot of people thirst over the unexpectedly hairy host. He kept it for a little while after that, but before long, he was back to clean shaven.
Addison Rae is finally arriving with new music, much to the excitement of fans. The speculation started after Rae’s previously unreleased songs started getting removed from the internet for copyright.
She has since confirmed that the songs will drop this Friday in a special Instagram post. “Dug up a few leaks from the lost album,” Rae wrote, complete with a bubblegum-themed photoshoot.
Not only that, but she has some high-profile collaborators that might have confirmed their role on the record.
Charli XCX, who had been rumored to be featured on Rae’s upcoming “2 Die 4” track, shared Rae’s album reveal to her story. “Gonna be 2 die 4 I can’t wait,” Charli captioned.
Other songs of Rae’s that are expected to drop include “Nothing On (But The Radio),” “I Got It Bad,” “It Could’ve Been U,” and “Obsessed.” There’s also a possibility that additional ones could make the tracklist, as other of Rae’s songs like “Love Sick” and “Mess Over U” have been pulled from YouTube.
“That moment when you, a queen, come across another queen, and discuss how best to maximize your joint slay,” one fan wrote in response to Charli and Addison joining forces.
“Sorry but THIS is real music. Nobody is doing FUN music anymore. No one is SERVING,” another added.
Check out Addison Rae’s new music reveal above. Below, find some additional fan reactions to the possibility of a Charli XCX collab.
Elijah Craig Bourbon is one of the best whiskey brands on the shelf today. The good people behind the heritage brand — at Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky — were smart enough to keep Elijah Craigh bourbon accessible, cheap, and delicious for all these decades (the brand was introduced back in 1986). Then to support that good ol’ bourbon that we all can find and afford, Heaven Hill started releasing special Barrel Proof and limited edition versions — basically amping up the flavors consumers had already fallen in love with.
To that end, Heaven Hill just released a brand-new limited edition expression to celebrate the 2023 Ryder Cup in September. Since the Ryder Cup is a competition between European and U.S.A. men’s golf teams, Heaven Hill added some European flare to their very American bourbon. They accomplished this by using European toasted oak to finish classic Elijah Craigh for this one and … it works pretty damn well.
So let’s get right into it and break down the nitty-gritty of how this whiskey is made, what makes it special, and what to expect when you take that first sip.

This whiskey was created to commemorate the “greatest team contest in golf” happening this year in Rome, Italy. The actual whiskey in the bottle is classic Elijah Craig Kentucky bourbon made with a mash bill of 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley. After around four to six years, some of that bourbon was batched and re-barreled into toasted new European oak barrels from the wine-growing region around Rome, the state of Lazio. Once just right, those barrels were batched and left to rest before proofing and bottling.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Big notes of crème brûlée pop on the nose with a deep vanilla oiliness next to salted caramel with a hint of malted chocolate and dry pear/apple cider that’s just kissed with winter spice barks, cedar, and candied dry red fruits.
Palate: Those fruits take on a sweet and almost tart vibrance on the palate as moist marzipan cut with pear brandy leads to more spice barks dipped in mulled wine, apple cider, and cream soda with a hint of tobacco spiciness lurking in the background.
Finish: That tobacco ascends on the finish with a cedar woodiness as the spices refine toward powdery cinnamon and allspice with a hint of eggnog nutmeg and walnut loaf cut with dried cranberries and cherries.
Bottom Line:
This is a nice, classic, and very enjoyable bourbon. The ABV is light enough that you can easily sip this one neat and feel the rounded edges and silky nature. That all said, I can see this working far better in a whiskey-forward cocktail than anything else. I want to make old fashioneds all day with this one.
Ranking:
88/100: This is a solid B+ whiskey. It’s not overly “toasted” or wood-forward and has a nice overall balance.
Where To Buy:
This Limited Edition Elijah Craig will be available nationwide starting in mid-August. Expect to find it at good whiskey shops for close to MSRP (maybe as much as $120 or $150 depending on who’s pricing things). This is still a limited and allocated bourbon though, so don’t expect it to linger on shelves beyond August/September.
You’ll also be able to find it at this year’s Ryder Cup in Rome at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club since this is the “Official Bourbon” of the whole show.
