The Absolute Best IPAs From Colorado, Ranked

Colorado is a haven for great craft beer. The good brewers of Rocky Mountain State have been at the forefront of micro-brewing for decades now. They’ve helped create and cement some of the biggest trends in the American beer scene since the 1990s to right now. Part of that heritage is with the American IPA brewed with malted barleys, hopped with funky hops, and made with that iconic Rocky Mountain water. Since Colorado is such a great spot for crafty and, honestly, now mainstream American IPAs, I thought it was high time to call out some of our absolute favorites.

Below, I’m calling out eight Colorado IPAs that you absolutely need to try. I’m not keeping it to one specific style of IPA either because where’s the fun in that? Colorado has huge brewing regions, especially in Boulder, Colorado Springs, Denver, and Fort Collins that all have micro-cultures therein. That makes Colorado great for West Coast IPAs, doubles, triples, hazies, New England, and every type of hybrid you can think of.

Okay, let’s get into the piney, floral, fruity, malty, and hoppy IPAs being brewed a mile high out in Colorado. My advice is to read my tasting notes, find the IPA that speaks to you, and then hit that price link to see if you grab a sixer in your neck of the woods.

8) Ska Modus Hoperandi

Ska Modus Hoperandi
Ska

ABV: 6.8%

Average Price: $11 for a six-pack

The Beer:

This Colorado IPA is referred to as “old-man bitter”. Brewed with Centennial, Cascade, and Columbus hops, it’s known for its hoppy, fairly bitter flavor profile featuring a lot of resinous pine and citrus (specifically grapefruit).

Tasting Notes:

On the nose, you’ll find grapefruit and pine. That’s about it though. There’s more of the same on the palate with dank pine needles and grapefruit taking center stage with some sweet, bready malts in the background.

Bottom Line:

If you like pine and grapefruit with hoppy bitterness at the finish, this is a great IPA for you.

7) Avery Maharaja

Avery Maharaja
Avery

ABV: 10%

Average Price: $20 for a six-pack

The Beer:

This imperial IPA is brewed with a “deranged” number of hops. This includes Columbus, Simcoe, Centennial, and Chinook hops in the kettle and dry-hopped with Idaho 7, Vic Secret, and more Simcoe hops. It’s well-known for its mix of malt sweetness and floral citrus hops.

Tasting Notes:

The nose is classic IPA with a ton of dank pine and citrus peels. Not much else is discernable though. The palate has a lot of candied orange peel, caramel malt, and pine flavors. The high alcohol content is very noticeable and the finish is floral and bitter.

Bottom Line:

Avery Maharaja is a big and bold beer.

6) Upslope IPA

Upslope IPA
Upslope

ABV: 7.2%

Average Price: $13 for a six-pack

The Beer:

Known for its mix of caramel malts and aromatic and flavorful hops, this classic IPA is brewed with Amarillo, Cascade, Simcoe, and Columbus hops. This beer ticks all the boxes of citrus, pine, caramel, and the expected IPA bitterness.

Tasting Notes:

Scents of pine needles, lemongrass, citrus peels, caramel, and wildflowers greet you before your first sip. The palate, while not as complex as the nose, features caramel malts, pine needles, and bright citrus. The finish is dry, bitter, and memorable.

Bottom Line:

This is a great choice if you enjoy classic, dry, bitter IPAs. It won’t knock your socks off with any of its flavors, but it just works.

5) Odd13 Codename: Superfan

Odd13 Codename: Superfan
Odd13

ABV: 6.5%

Average Price: $11 for a six-pack

The Beer:

This take on the classic American IPA is brewed with Simcoe, Citra, Amarillo, and Equinox hops. The recipe is rounded out with Rahr 2-Row, Flaked Wheat, Weyermann Carafoam malts. It was created to be a beer for the super fans and this is exactly what it is.

Tasting Notes:

This hazy IPA begins with a fruity, citrus-driven nose of caramelized pineapple, tangerine, guava, mango, and floral hops. There’s more of the same (in the best way possible) on the palate with fresh squeezed orange juice, tangerine, mango, peach, and grassy, floral, herbal, piney hops. The finish is sweet and gently hoppy.

Bottom Line:

If you enjoy hazy juicy IPAs, you need to add this beer to your must-try list. It might not be the most balanced hazies ever made, but it leans into the tropical fruit in a big way.

4) Odell Myrcenary Double IPA

Odell Myrcenary Double IPA
Odell

ABV: 9.3%

Average Price: $14 for a six-pack

The Beer:

Odell is a big name in the craft beer world. One of its best beers is Odell Myrcenary. It gets its name from “myrcene”, a part of the essential oils that are found in the hop flower. Brewed with hops with a ton of myrcene, this popular beer is known for its floral, piney, citrus-filled aroma and flavor.

Tasting Notes:

A lot is going on with this beer’s nose. Tangerine, orange peel, ripe grapefruit, peach, mango, pineapple, and caramel malts are big. Drinking it reveals a nice caramel backbone propped up by more mango, passionfruit, tangerine, lemon, grapefruit, and a ton of dank pine. The finish is bitter, dry, and leaves you craving more.

Bottom Line:

This is a very well-rounded IPA. The caramel malt backbone holds up well with the tropical fruit, citrus, and bitterness of the hops included.

3) Outer Range In The Steep

Outer Ranger Into The Steep
Outer Ranger

ABV: 6.7%

Average Price: $18 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

The Beer:

This popular New England-style IPA gets its flavor from being double dry-hopped exclusively with Citra hops. The result is a hazy juicy IPA loaded with tropical fruit and ripe citrus flavors. There’s a reason it’s one of the highest-rated IPAs coming out of Colorado.

Tasting Notes:

A complex nose of honeydew melon, caramelized pineapple, raspberries, grapefruit, and mango give way to floral, resinous hops. The palate is juicy, and velvety and has notes of caramel malts, ripe pineapple, mango, berries, grapefruit juice, and a gentle kiss of herbal pine at the finish with very little bitterness.

Bottom Line:

Sometimes New England-style IPAs lean a little heavily on the fruity, juicy aspect. This one doesn’t. It’s sublimely well-balanced.

2) Weldwerks Juicy Bits

Weldwerks Juicy Bits
Weldwerks

ABV: 6.7%

Average Price: $18 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

The Beer:

There are few Colorado IPAs more well-known than Weldweks Juicy Bits. The Greeley, Colorado brewery’s flagship IPA is brewed with El Dorado, Citra, and Mosaic hops, giving it a glut of tropical fruit and citrus flavor.

Tasting Notes:

This beer smells like a freshly squeezed glass of orange juice and that’s the point. On top of ripe oranges, there are notes of mango, peach, grapefruit, and pineapple as well as sweet wheat and caramel malts. The palate is very similar with a ton of orange zest, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, melon, berries, and a nice hint of floral, lightly bitter hops at the finish.

Bottom Line:

This beer is called Juicy Bits for a reason. While still maintaining the dry, hoppy properties of an IPA, it also has flavors like a pulpy glass of orange juice.

1) Station 26 Juicy Banger

Station 26 Juicy Banger
Station 26

ABV: 7.4%

Average Price: $12 for a six-pack

The Beer:

Station 26’s flagship beer is aptly named Juicy Banger IPA. Brewed with Centennial, Citra, and Mosaic hops as well as Root Shoot Malting Genie Pale malt, it’s known for its mix of juicy flavors including ripe peach, mango, papaya, honey, and floral, earthy hops.

Tasting Notes:

Citrus peels, passionfruit, peach, tangerine, and floral hops make up a very welcoming nose. The palate continues this trend with flavors of peach, lemongrass, grapefruit, guava, caramel malts, and lightly bitter, floral, earthy, piney hops. The finish is dry and refreshing.

Bottom Line:

Proving that it’s difficult to beat a well-made juicy IPA, Station 26 Juicy Banger is definitely a beer you should add to your go-to list.

Saweetie Has Apparently Joined OnlyFans Competitor Fansly With A Page Promising ‘Spicy Content’

Over the past couple of years, as revenue from streaming and touring slowed down, artists have found plenty of alternative streams of income — including fan-based content platforms with racy reputations, like OnlyFans. Among the artists who’ve joined the platform are Iggy Azalea, who said she is “making so much money” on the platform, and Bhad Bhabie, who reportedly pulled in a ludicrous sum in her first year. Now, a new name is joining a similar platform, as Icy Girl Saweetie announces the launch of her own account on competing service, Fansly.

She announced the launch of her Fansly account via Instagram, as well as with a press release. In the attached statement, she said, “I’m so hyped to team up with Fansly and give my loyal ICY GIRLS a peek into my world like never before. We’re about to bring the fire and empower creators to connect with their fans on a whole new level. Brace yourselves for some spicy content, baby!”

While that content is probably not what some fans are hoping for — after all, no other star has yet gone quite so far — the extra cash could come in handy as Saweetie continues to work on her long-awaited, recently renamed debut album and tour with new boo YG and his Compton brethren Tyga. She apparently teased the move at this weekend’s fight between Jake Paul and Nate Diaz in Las Vegas, making her debut as a ring girl. It should probably be noted that while Fansly and OnlyFans have a reputation for explicit content, neither is technically considered an adults-only site, with creators free to post whatever content they like — within guidelines, of course.

Saweetie is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

James Gunn Reportedly Told David Ayer That His ‘Suicide Squad’ Cut Will See The Light Of Day

It’s been a minute since David Ayer’s original version of Suicide Squad, a.k.a. the “Ayer Cut,” has been a hot topic of discussion, so it was surprising to see the director recently offer an update on the seemingly mythical piece of cinema.

Thanks to the divisive release of the Justice League Snyder Cut, which was born out of necessity to populate the burgeoning HBO Max with content amidst the pandemic, the Ayer Cut had some wind its sails as DC Comics fans were eager to see the original cut of both films. The two were interconnected, even more so after Snyder filmed new scenes with Jared Leto’s Joker. However, another regime change at Warner Bros. killed momentum for the Ayer Cut, and the chance of it seeing the light of day seemingly faded.

Well, not entirely, according to Ayer. The director gave fans an update on Monday where he claimed that new DC Studios head James Gunn assured him that the original Suicide Squad cut will have its time in the sun.

Via Twitter:

Have you ever had an experience in life that didn’t until the way you wanted, that dragged you, that made you rethink everything? I have.

All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut being show seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have it’s time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects.

Ayer concluded his update by writing, “In a way I’m chained to this thing. I’m riding a tiger here and navigating this situation the best I can. Life is a very strange journey.”

The ‘Fair Play’ Trailer With Phoebe Dynevor And Alden Ehrenreich Is The Sexy Thriller You’ve Been Waiting For

One nice thing about Oppenheimer (other than a three-hour long drama for adults cleaning up at the box office) is how it reminded everyone that Alden Ehrenreich is a very good actor. He took too much of the blame for the commercial failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story when, in fact, his performance a Han Solo is one of the best things about the movie. But Ehrenreich is having a big 2023, with roles in Cocaine Bear, Oppenheimer, and Sundance hit Fair Play, alongside Bridgerton‘s Phoebe Dynevor.

Written and directed by Chloe Domont, the psychological thriller follows a couple, Emily (Dynevor) and Luke (Ehrenreich), who are deeply in love. But “when a coveted promotion at a cutthroat financial firm arises, supportive exchanges between the lovers begin to sour into something more sinister. As the power dynamics irrevocably shift in their relationship, Luke and Emily must face the true price of success and the unnerving limits of ambition,” according to the official plot synopsis.

Fair Play was acquired by Netflix for $20 million after premiering at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it was called an “expertly calibrated urban thriller that kicks off with a sexy bloodbath” and a “sexy, intelligent thriller for an adult audience.” You can watch the trailer above.

Fair Play premieres in selected theaters on September 29th before debuting on Netflix on October 13th.

A Dire Meatball Warning Has Been Issued By A Florida Newspaper To The Rest Of The U.S.

Ole Pudding Fingers Ron DeSantis has wreaked quite a bit of chaos lately in his own way. Shakespeare (The Bard!) is somehow forbidden in Florida schools, and the Sunshine State’s governor hopelessly made his slavery remarks even worse over the weekend. Not only that, but the emboldened and confused meatball extraordinaire has been waving some harsh, Mafia-like rhetoric around the U.S. in an attempt to outdo his primary rival.

I think we all know who that is, and it ain’t Mike Pence. However, whereas 44 can say horrible things and still somehow charm his MAGA legion, DeSantis simply comes across attempting to be as offensive as possible. That’s especially the case while he’s duking it out in Iowa, and now, a Florida-based newspaper is waving the red flag as far as it can reach across the U.S.

Via Raw Story, the Miami Herald‘s editorial board is loud and clear with their message, which goes something like… we are stuck with him, and you don’t want this. After an ominous “America, you’ve been warned,” the publication goes on to trounce DeSantis “Florida Blueprint” and determines that, as I suggested above, DeSantis might be slightly worse than Trump because DeSantis presumably knows how to behave, rather than shifting into “autocratic strongman” mode:

Unlike thrice-indicted Trump, whom [Harvard University political scientist Steven] Levitsky describes as an “innate” authoritarian, DeSantis is an Ivy League-educated lawyer who understands the U.S. Constitution. In other words, he probably knows better.

That’s not all, of course. The paper outlines several ways that DeSantis has been doing Florida (and possibly his own actual principles) dirty. Those would include “quashing dissent,” “consolidating power,” “demonizing minorities,” and more. It’s certainly not an endorsement, but DeSantis might also be doing himself in with no additional help needed. On that note, USA Today reports that billionaire donors are dumping the Meatball because of his war on “woke.” This includes billionaire hedge funder Ken Griffin, who decided to pull further campaign contributions over DeSantis silly war on Disney.

That meatball is simply rolling down the hill right about now.

The 1975’s Matty Healy Addressed The Malaysia Incident: ‘I Don’t Give A F*ck About Any White Savior Complex Bullsh*t’

In the latest segment following The 1975’s incident at Malaysia’s Good Vibes Festival last month, the band’s lead singer, Matty Healy, spoke about it once again during their show in Hawaii over the weekend. As expected, he did not hold back.

“All I’ll say is that I don’t give a f*ck about any white savior complex bullsh*t,” he told the crowd. “What I’ll say is that doing the right thing often requires quite a lot of sacrifice and very little reward. And being seen to do the right thing requires very little sacrifice, and that’s when you get all the rewards. And me and Ross [MacDonald] nearly shaved our heads because we thought we were going to prison for being f**s.”

For those who might have missed it, during The 1975’s festival set, Healy and MacDonald (and the rest of the band) protested the country’s anti-LGBTQ laws on stage — both by speaking out and making out with each other.

“When we were booking shows, I wasn’t looking into it. I don’t see the f*cking point, right, I do not see the point of inviting The 1975 to a country and then telling us who we can have sex with,” Healy said at Good Vibes.

This resulted in the remainder of the festival being canceled. Since then, local activists have also criticized the move, pointing out it pushed back their efforts — as Malaysia is now examining bands touring there with a closer lens. (The 1975 are still banned.)

DJ Casper, Creator Of The ‘Cha Cha Slide,’ Is Dead At 58

DJ Casper, the creative mastermind behind the international dance hit “Cha Cha Slide,” has died at the age of 58. The Chicago music pioneer, real name Willie Perry Jr., was one of the most prominent figures in the city’s line dance community. According to the local ABC 7 station, Perry’s wife Kim confirmed yesterday (August 7) that the musician’s cause of date was tied to his longtime battle with cancer.

Perry sat down with the station in May to discuss his health condition. “They diagnosed me in 2016 with two kinds of cancer, which is renal and Neuroendocrine, which is kidney and liver,” said Perry.

He added, “They went in to try to do surgery, and they found out the kidney was connected to the main artery, so they decided not to do it and just treat it.”

Perry remained optimistic about his chances at recovery. He even offered words of encouragement for others fighting the disease, saying, “Anybody that’s going through cancer know that you have cancer, and cancer does not have you. So, keep on doing the ‘Cha Cha Slide.’”

Before Chicago birthed drill music and its innovators such as Lil Durk, Chief Keef, and G Herbo, the Windy City had long since had a musical legacy in dance genres, including house music.

Adam Devine Blames Superhero Movies (And Talking Raccoons) For Ruining Comedies

Between June and August 2023, only a handful comedies (not comedy-dramas or rom-coms, but straight up comedies) were or will be released into theaters, including No Hard Feelings, Joy Ride, and Bottoms. Twenty years ago, that list was much longer. Movie studios are hesitant to give a coveted blockbuster season slot to a comedy, which usually don’t do well overseas.

Adam Devine pins the blame for the death of big-screen comedies on superhero movies.

“You watch comedies nowadays and you’re like, this is not a f*cking comedy. Where are the jokes? Where are the bits?” The Righteous Gemstones and Workaholics star said on an episode of the This Past Weekend podcast. “There’s still good [comedy] shows and stuff, but movie comedy… it’s hard.”

Devine’s theory? “I think Marvel ruined it. I feel like superhero movies ruined comedies because you go to the theater and you expect to watch something that cost $200 million to make, and comedy movies aren’t that. So you’re like, ‘Why would I spend the same amount of money to go watch a little comedy in the theater if I can spend that and see something that is worth $200 million?’”

As someone who’s heard that (flawed) rationale from friends, he’s not wrong. Something like No Hard Feelings doesn’t have the flash of, well, The Flash, but watching a comedy in a packed theater sure beats laughing at Jennifer Lawrence’s nude fight scene at home by yourself.

Devine took another shot at Marvel, saying, “And they still make those movies kind of funny, like, ‘Oh my god, is that raccoon talking? This is hilarious!’ Which it is, but it’s not like a real comedy.” You can listen to the podcast below.

Rita Ora Proposed To Taika Waititi And He Explained Just How She Did It

Rita Ora and Taika Waititi have been married for a little over a year now, and on their anniversary, they spoke with Vogue about how the ceremony went down.

The two first met at a 2018 barbecue that Waititi hosted at his Los Angeles home. They started dating in 2021, when they were both filming in Australia. Then, when they were on a Palm Springs vacation in the summer of 2022, Ora popped the question.

“She proposed to me, and I said yes instantly,” Waititi noted.

They planned an impromptu wedding in Los Angeles for August 4, despite reports indicating otherwise.

“It wasn’t in London or in France like everyone reported,” Waititi said. “It was in LA with a small group of friends.”

Ora was amused by the misinformation, though, saying, “It’s actually been quite entertaining for us to see the different stories people made up and all the while getting to keep it to ourselves. And, I love that we now get to share what really happened — and to do it on our one-year anniversary, no less!”

As for the ceremony, it was intimate. Waititi explained, “Just having close friends and not having it too big. We didn’t have table settings or any of the stressful things that go along with weddings, and it was nice to just have it super simple. My daughters were there, and they made everything really fun and easy: I think just because we didn’t have the pressure of having caterers and all of these things, you know, people turning up late, and all of the different moving parts.”
