Dwyane Wade Will Join The Ownership Group Of The Chicago Sky

Dwyane Wade‘s post-playing career has involved getting into the sports ownership game, as the soon-to-be Hall of Fame inductee purchased minority stakes in the Utah Jazz back in 2021 and Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer in 2022. Now, Wade has decided to expand his portfolio to include a WNBA squad, as the Illinois native is purchasing a stake in the Chicago Sky.

The news was broken by Alexa Philippou of ESPN, who noted that the size of Wade’s stake is unclear and still needs to be approved by the league’s Board of Governors. But despite that, Wade expressed his excitement over the move, saying that he views this as an important way to support the league.

“We all talk about support, and support looks different for everyone,” Wade told Philippou. “And so instead of tweeting out and saying ‘go support the W,’ instead of showing up at the game and supporting, I wanted to take it to that next level, and this was the next level for me.”

Wade went on to confirm the news on his Twitter account.

It’s been a busy couple of months for the Sky’s ownership group, as the team welcomed a new group of investors back in June that purchased a 10 percent stake at an $85 million valuation. Now, the group welcomes in Wade, with Sky co-owner and operating chairman Nadia Rawlinson telling ESPN “This is meaningful for the players, and this is meaningful for the city as a whole. Dwyane Wade is a son of Chicago. And the thing that differentiates us, I think, from other franchises is that we are Chicago. We are the future of Chicago. We are the culture of Chicago. We are in it and of it, and he is very much sort of a main character in that story. And we’re just pleased and thrilled at what the future can bring with both of us working together.”

The 2021 WNBA champions, Chicago is in a state of flux right now, as the team is 8-12 on the year and saw its head coach and general manager, James Wade, leave midseason to accept an assistant coaching job with the Toronto Raptors. The move came on the heels of a tricky offseason for the Sky, which saw five of their six leading scorers from last year’s squad — Candace Parker, Courtney Vandersloot, Allie Quigley, Emma Meesseman, and Rebekah Gardner — not return for the 2023 campaign.

Dolly Parton Would Rather ‘Drop Dead In The Middle Of A Song On Stage’ Than Retire

Dolly Parton has made it clear that she’s unstoppable. Her new album Rockstar arrives later this year, and it features Stevie Nicks, Paul McCartney, Sting, Miley Cyrus, Chris Stapleton, and many more. And she has no plans to retire.

On Wednesday (July 12), the singer appeared on Ken Bruce’s Greatest Hits Radio for an interview. She explicitly stated that she has no intention of slowing down. “‘I would never retire!” she exclaimed. “I would hopefully drop dead in the middle of a song on stage someday — and hopefully one I’ve written.”

However, she did say earlier this year that she’s done touring. “I do not think I will ever tour again, but I do know I’ll do special shows here and there, now and then,” she said in an interview. “Maybe do a long weekend of shows, or just a few shows at a festival. But I have no intention of going on a full-blown tour anymore. I’ve done that my whole life, and it takes so much time and energy. I like to stay a little closer to home with my husband. We’re getting older now, and I don’t want to be gone for four or five weeks at a time. Something could happen. I would not feel right about that, if I were gone and somebody needed me. Or I would feel bad if I had to leave a tour if somebody got sick at home and needed me and then I had to walk out on the fans.”

Move Over, Zuck And Elon, Chris Christie Swears He Could Beat Trump In A Bare-Knuckle Brawl: ‘I’d Kick His Ass’

Much has been made (by Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg) about the supposed impending “cage fight” between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. The latter has been getting ripped while the former has been training with a podcaster, and I think we can all guess how this might end.

However, there might be another fight on the horizon? Nah. Let’s get real, this will never happen because Donald Trump would never allow his ass to be kicked, but Chris Christie is going there, at least, by telling Piers Morgan, “The guy’s 78 years old. I’d kick his ass.”

Granted, this matchup would have little to do with age. Everyone knows how much Trump loves fast food, and he cannot possibly be the most stringent person at, say, getting cardio workouts in. Likewise, Christie has owned up to his own weight struggles, especially after Don Jr. cracked a super mature joke about donuts, and Trump Sr. passed on a dumb buffet meme after Christie announced his 2024 candidacy against his frenemy.

However, the former New Jersey governor can trash talk with the best of them. He called Trump “a spoiled baby,” among other things, and he also dragged Trump for having nothing better in his arsenal other than weight-related jokes. It’s a fair point, and even though I think that Trump would never step into the ring with Christie despite attending UFC events, it sure is fun to contemplate. The hair pulling would be yuge, so Christie would easily score points there.

It Sounds Like One Of Jonah Hill’s Co-Stars Had A Miserable Time Working With Him

In the 2013 apocalypse comedy This Is the End, Jay Baruchel’s character, a fictionalized version of himself, doesn’t get along with Jonah Hill (he also plays “himself” in the movie). “Can’t stand him, he can’t stand me,” Jay says about Jonah in one scene. This wasn’t far from the truth in real life, too.

A Larry King interview with Baruchel from 2017 has resurfaced following allegations against Hill, including that he was “emotionally abusive” to his ex-girlfriend and that he “shoved his tongue” down the throat of a teenager without consent. In response to a question about what his relationship with Hill is like, Baruchel answered, “There is one, I guess. I know the man.”

While Baruchel was laughing from discomfort, King questioned, “You don’t like him?” The BlackBerry actor “wouldn’t say that,” but “it was contentious once upon a time, but I think now we’re sort of each the devil the other one knows.”

This wasn’t the only interview where Baruchel was asked about Hill.

In a recent episode of The Last Laugh podcast, however, Baruchel delved deeper into their contentious relationship and stated firmly: “I was… real crabby throughout that whole movie … Jonah and I don’t get along super well, or at least didn’t back then.” When told the dynamic “comes through on screen,” the Canadian actor wasn’t surprised: “Yeah, no f*cking sh*t, it does! And also, it was this weird thing of mining personal sh*t.”

He continued, “In the most commoditized, capitalist way of, like, we’re going to dig up real personal sh*t, but nobody’s going to go home feeling better about it. We’re just going to turn it into a f*cking product.” This Is the End was a trying time for Baruchel, Hill, Emma Watson, and probably everyone who interacted with James Franco — but at least Michael Cera had fun.

Joe Jonas Accidentally Pooping In His Pants On Stage Was His Way Of ‘Paying His Dues,’ Or So He Joked

In the past, Joe Jonas couldn’t help but make splashy headlines due to his star power. Now, he does his best to avoid them, especially if it’s related to a very famous ex-lover. But, during his latest radio interview with KIIS FM’s Will & Woody, things spiraled out of control when he opened up about the most embarrassing and slightly messy moment of his life.

While promoting the Jonas Brothers’ massive load of an arena tour next month, Joe revealed that one time while performing, as he started to get going, so did his bowels, leading him to poop in his pants on stage accidentally. “I was with a few friends yesterday, and we were just talking about (how) there is a point in your life where, as an adult, you can remember the last time you sh*t your pants,” the singer told the hosts.

He later added, “Let’s just say it was a bad day to choose to wear white clothing. You think it might be a little toot; it might’ve been a little something else, a little something extra. So it was like a mid-wardrobe sh*t change during the set.”

Although the incident occurred over four years ago and was followed up with a quick wardrobe change, to the “Who’s In Your Head” singer, “It’s fresh, but I’ve been able to work through it, a lot of therapy,” or so he joked.

Aaron Rodgers Doesn’t Seem Happy About The Jets Appearing On ‘Hard Knocks’: ‘They Forced It Down Our Throats’

The New York Jets are going to be on TV a lot this NFL season, and as it turns out, HBO wants to showcase the team in the lead-up to the season, too. Earlier this week, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Jets had been selected to appear on Hard Knocks, HBO’s revered behind-the-scenes series that gives fans a glimpse into life during training camp.

It makes a ton of sense for the Jets to appear on the show considering the team’s busy offseason that has led to them having legitimate aspirations of making a run in the AFC, but there’s one problem: No one seems to be especially excited about it. Back in June, New York coach Robert Saleh told the press that “I know there are several teams that would love for Hard Knocks to be in their building. We’re just not one of them.” And earlier this week, the team’s biggest offseason acquisition claimed that the Jets didn’t have much say in the matter.

“One of the only things I like about Hard Knocks is the voice of God, who narrates it,” Aaron Rodgers said. “Liev [Schreiber], I hope I get to meet him. But look, I understand the appeal with us — obviously, there’s a lot of eyes on me, lot of eyes on our team, lot of expectations for our squad. So, they forced it down our throats and we gotta deal with it.”

The specific criteria for appearing on Hard Knocks — no teams with first-year coaches, no teams that made the playoffs in either of the last two seasons, no teams that have been on the show in the last decade — meant that only four teams were eligible to be on the show this year: the Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, Washington Commanders, and of course, the Jets. Considering the market they’re in, the quality of their division, and their acquisition of a Hall of Fame quarterback this offseason, it makes a ton of sense that New York was the overwhelming favorite among those teams. We will have to see, however, how the Jets go about handling a spotlight they do not want.

Noname Threatened To Withhold Her Album ‘Sundial’ After Fans Reacted Poorly To A Featured Artist On Her Next Song

After Noname announced that the release of her Sundial single “Balloons” was imminent, some fans were overjoyed that she had new music on the way, but others were disappointed in her choice for one of the song’s featured artists. After a minor backlash to the presence of Jay Electronica — whose 5%er philosophies often mirror Black Israelite and Nation of Islam talking points that some folks feel reinforce antisemitic beliefs — Noname threatened to withhold the album, saying rap is in a good place (the song’s still coming out, though).

“niggas legit rap about actual murder and sexual assault that they commit in real life and y’all can’t take a jay elect verse?” she wrote on Twitter. “please drink water and be safe out here. i’ll see y’all when my album drop in a few weeks. sending love and prayers.” However, when fans responded poorly to that tweet, Noname tried to elaborate on her choice, then seemingly got frustrated when her points were met with more pushback. “y’all don’t want the album,” she wrote. “fine.”

When another fan argued she should “stick by the action instead of wasting time arguing and then getting upset,” she conceded, “oh the song fa sho coming out lol. the album is another story. i’m good on the selective outrage. anyways hip hop is in a great place right now. another noname album ain’t really necessary.”

It’s easy to understand why Jay’s appearance might have come at a poor time. Hip-hop fans are perhaps especially sensitive to perceived antisemitism after Kanye West’s antics last year, which came at the same time as NBA star Kyrie Irving’s faux pas of sharing a link to a conspiracy video. Unfortunately, because Noname has a reputation for scrutinizing other artists’ politics, it seems that fans are taking the opportunity to fire back at her. For what it’s worth, though, artists have threatened to cancel album releases in the past, only to release the albums anyway — so perhaps when cooler heads prevail, that’s what will happen here, too.

Ron DeSantis Secret Memo To Donors: Our Campaign Only Looks Bad On The Outside, But We Will Shut It Down Soon ‘If We Don’t See A Bump In The Polls’

As Ron DeSantis continues to stumble on the national stage and trail behind Donald Trump in the polls, his campaign has reportedly sent a “confidential memo” to donors assuring them that the Florida governor isn’t wasting everybody’s time and money. In fact, the campaign has a plan that it’s feeling pretty good about.

According to a copy of the secret memo obtained by NBC News, the DeSantis campaign is putting all of its resources into early states instead of worrying about Super Tuesday. More specifically, the campaign is confident it can gain momentum by focusing on New Hampshire, where DeSantis has already embarrassed himself once by pissing off the Republican Federation of Women, which has already thrown its considerable political weight behind Trump.

Nevertheless, the DeSantis campaign assured donors that he can still peel off voters. Via NBC News:

“Early state voters are only softly committed to the candidates they select on a ballot question this far out — including many Trump supporters,” the memo said. “Our focus group participants in the early states even say they do not plan on making up their mind until they meet the candidates or watch them debate.”

As for what happens if it becomes clear that DeSantis is going to get crushed by Trump right out of the gate? The Republican primary will become a pudding cup that DeSantis won’t stick his fingers in.

“From my understanding, if we don’t see a bump in the polls, we are basically going to shut down the idea of a national operation,” a DeSantis-aligned operative told NBC News.

‘The Bear’ Casting Director Jeanie Bacharach Tells Us How The Show Scored Its Impressive Season 2 Guest Stars

Watching the first season of FX’s The Bear felt a bit like being a frog in a pot of boiling water. Everything was contained claustrophobia, scalding insults, and rising tensions — the sense that you might die from the anxiety of waiting for a piccata sauce to break or a ticket machine to fire off yet another order. You were constantly stuck in the chaos, hoping someone would dial the knob back so you could breathe. It’s what made the show’s first pass so great, and what makes its season two follow-up – which completely breaks away from that formula – even better.

The Bear’s return has been lauded for its choice to escape its back-of-house turmoil, sending its chefs on culinary walkabouts to search for palate inspiration while opening up its central story with new additions and guest stars that flesh out the Berzatto clan at the center of this dramatic grease trap. To do that, the show’s casting department – led by Jeanie Bacharach – had to embrace yet another food metaphor, finding a way to “add to this amazing dish” without “throwing off the flavors.”

“How are you looking to add? How are you looking to contrast? How do we make these characters distinct from the people we already have on the show?” Bacharach says while breaking down season two’s many guest stars. “Then there’s the added pressure of, ‘I don’t want to throw anything off.’ It can all go south.”

It didn’t, of course. The show’s second season is a smorgasbord of A-list talent given free rein to embrace their wildest, shoutiest, most dysfunctional selves with everyone from Bob Odenkirk and Jamie Lee Curtis to Jon Bernthal, Sarah Paulson, Gillian Jacobs, Olivia Colman, Will Poulter, and John Mulaney serving memorable performances.

Ahead, Uproxx chats with Bacharach about casting that nerve-shredding family dinner, who begged to be on the show, and avoiding the Friends guest star trap.

The show had so many guest roles to fill this season. How did you decide which characters needed lesser-known versus well-known actors?

A lot of times with casting, you are looking to tell part of the story just in the person that you’re casting in the role. Someone like Bob Odenkirk … for the character of Uncle Lee you needed someone who was going to be a bit of an a-hole, argumentative, but that you also have to, on some level, care for and understand. There has to be gravitas, there has to be depth. You see Bob and you’re like, ‘Okay.’ You’re already in the character with him. And then he gets to, of course, do his magic and take it from there.

With Jamie Lee too … Donna, you’ve heard so much about Donna and you’ve heard so much about the family dynamics that you are shortcutting a little bit in your casting. What’s so great about our show too is they just drop you in. I love that there isn’t over-explanation. So again, casting has to do some of that work for the audience.

How many of season two’s casting choices came from you and how many came from showrunner Christopher Storer just reaching out to friends?

It’s very much a give-and-take. Chris has a lot of people that he knows and Molly Gordon was somebody that he kind of had in his head from the get-go for the role of Claire. I think knowing both Molly as an actress, and Molly as a person, is why she made so much sense. You really had to believe that she came from Carmy’s world, and that’s not true for everybody. And then both the warmth and being able to call Carmy on his stuff and still be likable. I mean, that sense of humor is walking a fine line. So he nailed it with Molly. I threw out Bob Odenkirk and Chris and Jo [co-showrunner Joanna Calo] were like, ‘Oh my God, done.’ And then it’s like, you got to make it happen.

And how do you pitch playing a total asshole for just one episode to someone like Bob Odenkirk?

[laughs] We didn’t lead with the A-word. We are so fortunate in that people said yes because they so loved the show. But it’s hard with one episode. We had this with Jon Bernthal in the first season, with the role of Michael. We hadn’t aired yet, so people didn’t know about the show. Jon was somebody from the beginning that we all loved for the part, but it was like, ‘It’s one scene.’ He was shooting a series at the time. So when we initially approached him, it just wasn’t even possible because of his schedule. We explored a whole bunch of other people. We had people read. We talked about other people we could make an offer to, and we just kept coming back to Jon. It was Ebon’s [Moss-Bachrach] relationship with him, having worked with Jon before, where he was like, ‘You know what? Let me just call him and see if I can hook him.’ That’s a case where a lot of people said no, because there just wasn’t that much to the part, but we knew it was so important to land that role. Because Mikey has very little screen time, but he is so present in the show.

So I think that it meant a lot that Bob Odenkirk and Sarah Paulson and John Mulaney and Gillian Jacobs said yes to one episode. You just don’t get that. It wasn’t about money, it was getting to come play in this sandbox. I guess it’s a long way of saying when people say yes, it’s because they’re coming for the right reason. It’s about wanting to come and be a part of this world and these characters.

Is there anyone that came to you, asking to be on the show?

When we went to Jamie Lee, again, it was like, ‘The woman is about to win an Oscar.’ We were like, ‘You’re like fantasy.’ And then it turned out she was a huge fan of the show. Olivia Colman, same thing. It was like, ‘Sure. Why not? Let’s ask Olivia. Let’s just get it done then we’ll be able to move on.’ And both her agent and her, just enormous fans of the show. But Will Poulter was somebody who had reached out to Chris after season one. Will playing Luca, that came about from Chris and Will meeting and talking.

There was a lot of secrecy around the cameos this season. Why?

I think the hope was to keep it all under wraps just to let it unfold, because episode six especially, it’s such a heightened episode and a flashback. All these characters are so larger than life. But Chris loves the surprise. He likes to make noise. And with all the expectation and pressure of the second season, the casting, it wasn’t about, ‘We can get famous people, let’s get famous people,’ it was, ‘How do we serve these characters?’ We didn’t ever want it to feel like Friends casting, which again, no [disrespect], but at a certain point that just became a parade of famous people. And it is the danger, especially in a world like this, that you don’t want to tip it into a parade of stars.

Is there someone that surprised you with how easily they just slid in and seemed like they had been there from the beginning?

Molly, for sure. Jamie Lee was beyond prepped. But everyone brought their A-game. We have a no a-hole policy on the show but no one was trying to steal the spotlight. And what can happen with comedy people is you just get into that, it’s not even on purpose, but you’re just riffing off each other and it can really sort of go off the deep end.

But within a couple of days of shooting episode six, Chris just called and said it was unbelievable. They all were there to serve the piece and each other. I thought Sarah was such an interesting choice to drop into that world. Again, you’re like, ‘Oh, she’s the one who got out.’ That’s that sort of shortcutting, a little bit of like, ‘Oh yeah, yeah, she’s definitely a little bit of the outsider here.’ And then the fact that Mulaney is her partner. And I love that he’s an outsider in a different way than Chris Witaske, who plays Pete. Your heart goes out to both of these men who found themselves in the midst of this insane, dysfunctional family.

Olivia Colman isn’t in episode six, but her character plays such a pivotal role in Richie’s turning point this season. What about her as an actor made her a fit for that moment?

She just brings such weight and authenticity to everything that she does. That class and intelligence, all of that was going to be important. There’s the elegance and the stillness, which is so much of what Richie is learning, but not having to try hard at it. I think we talked about how you had to believe this woman had lived this experience. She was a survivor. She had made a choice to run her restaurant in a certain way, and that was passed on to everybody. But again, from a place of respect, not control, not the Joel McHale model. And just a warmth, again, without being gooey, because that’s the danger, to tip into the saccharine, like, ‘Oh, here’s the big moment.’ She can do it with such dignity and grace, again, that whoever we cast in that role, that was going to be what was so important, and that it would be someone that Richie could hear.
