Manuel Turizo Is Breaking The Rules Of Latin Pop On His 201 Tour

HHM_Manuel Turizo_Editorial_image_1024x450
JP Bonino

Nearly a decade into his career, Manuel Turizo is proving himself to be a global pop star that can do it all. The Colombian heartthrob has scored multiple hits in genres like reggaeton, bachata, EDM, música Mexicana, Afrobeats, and more. Turizo is currently taking a victory lap with his diverse discography on the 201 World Tour.

“I’m in an era of constant evolution,” Turizo says. “I feel like I always have something to discover, something to learn, and a drive to keep evolving. I never want to get to a point in my career where that’s not the case.”

A decade ago, the Montería native moved to Colombia’s reggaeton capital, Medellín, which has spun off stars like J Balvin, Maluma, Karol G, and Feid. The then teenage Turizo set himself apart from his peers with his ukulele-led smash “Una Lady Como Tú,” which has over two billion views on YouTube. While first lumped into the reggaeton scene, he broke out of that box with his third album 2000 and the tropical hit “La Bachata.” Now at 25, Turizo is putting the spotlight on Montería and Colombia’s Caribbean coast with his latest LP 201. His sultry baritone voice soars in the alluring “Qué Pecao” featuring Kapo, the salsa of “Sígueme Besando Así,” and the cumbia of “De Lunes a Lunes” with Grupo Frontera.

The album is named after Turizo’s family’s old apartment in Montería. The 201 World Tour features a reconstructed version of that apartment onstage. He fully leans into his sex appeal and performs his biggest hits while shirtless. Turizo’s abs famously appeared in Shakira’s “Copa Vacía” music video. He has continued to branch out in collaborations like Xavi’s “En Privado,” which seamlessly blends corridos with bachata. At the L.A. stop of his tour, Turizo spoke with UPROXX, looking back on his career an talking about not limiting himself to one genre and his next album.

Now that you’re eight years into your career, what have you learned about yourself in that time?

You have to work hard and make sacrifices for what you want to achieve. We all have our dreams and those dreams are beautiful. It’s all about working towards developing those dreams to make them a reality.

You have big hits like “La Bachata” and “El Merengue” and you’ve explored genres like reggaeton, EDM, Afrobeats, vallenato, and salsa. Why is it important for you to explore all types of genres in your music?

It’s something that I enjoy. I want to keep having fun. If I went to the studio doing the same thing, I would get bored. That would become monotonous for me. I wouldn’t be interested in that or excited by that. I don’t want to limit myself as an artist. When I started out, my team and label wanted to know where I fit. That was difficult for me because I can’t be boxed into one thing. I like many different things. With time, people started to understand that that is the way I enjoy making music. I like to try out different genres. Playing around with genres is a way for me to express my identity.

What does it mean for you to explore your roots in Montería and Colombia’s Caribbean region with your 201 album?

I feel very proud. I’m a genuine representative of my homeland and my culture. When people are connecting me, they’re also connecting with my culture, my people, and where I come from. The idea is to show people the beauty of where I’m from and that they have a lot to get to know in that region. For that album, those influences came out of me naturally. It was all very organic.

How would you describe the experience of bringing the 201 album to life with your world tour?

On this tour, it’s even more special than my previous ones because of the 201 apartment onstage. It’s like a real place. The apartment brings a sense of mystique to the tour and speaks to where the songs come from and why I wrote them. I always feel a mix of nerves and stress, but when I’m onstage and ready to go, it’s all worth it. When my fans are happy and having fun and I see them dancing and singing along, it’s all worth it. I feel all kinds of emotions, but above all, I’m happy.

From your voice, your lyrics, and your body, you have fans that see you as a sex symbol. How do you feel to be seen in that way?

I send that love right back to them. Everything that my fans think about me and all the praise, I take it as them showing me love and caring about me. I always try to be genuine about who I am and express myself and I’m glad they enjoy that. Who doesn’t like to feel beautiful? My fans make me feel good, confident, and happy.

In July, I loved seeing you show up to Madrid Pride with the colors of the Pride flag in your hair. As an ally, why was it important for you to show up for fans in the LGBTQ+ community?

The theme of Pride is all about respecting everyone and allowing people to feel free to do what they want to do. My team has several people that belong to the LGBTQ+ community. We’re in 2025 and I feel like it’s something that needs to be normalized. Everyone should feel free to be themselves. Also, a very large part of my fan base belongs to that community and they love me, support me, and care about me. That was a small gesture on my part to make them feel the same way they’ve made me feel. I did that with love.

“Copa Vacía” is on the setlist of your tour and Shakira’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran Tour. How would you describe the experience of working with her on that song?

It was very amazing! As an artist who is also from Colombia, that was on my checklist. It was something that I had to do. A year before, we talked about doing a song, but it didn’t happen. Exactly one year later, “Copa Vacía” came to me as a surprise. I said yes automatically. I remember she was still in Barcelona and I was in Mexico. We had to do the session through Zoom. I traveled from Mexico to Barcelona to shoot the music video. As someone that grew up with her music, that was a surreal experience for me. To think that I made a song with Shakira, I told myself, “You did it!” A power of hers is that she never gets tired of wanting to evolve. That’s something I always aim for. She always wants to keep growing and giving her fans something new and different. I learned from her that you always want to be better. You demand more from yourself because you want to bring out the best in you.

Another big hit this year is “En Privado” with Xavi. How did that collaboration come together?

I remember we went into the studio and we said, “Let’s do a song for you and a song for me.” There’s people that think “En Privado” is more my style. We have another song that I’m sure they will think is more his style. I hope next year that we can release that other song. We understood each other well in the studio. He’s very talented. It was very easy to work with him. We were talking and laughing together. He still has very fresh ideas. He’s not influenced by the industry trends. He’s simply going with the flow and having fun making music. I’ve been on this path where I’m embracing música Mexicana more and more. Aside from Colombia, Mexico was the first country to embrace my music. Working with Mexican artists and Mexican culture has come very naturally for me. I want to show people that I love Mexican culture and all the música Mexicana genres.

What was the inspiration for your newest single “Mírame Ahora (Salud Mi Reina)”?

With that song, I wanted to return 100 percent to romanticism. I believe my fans really like that. They like when I’m heartbroken or when I’m in love. With that song, I was very much in love. It’s the appetizer to my new album that I’m starting to work on. It has a lot of that Latino and Caribbean vibe of 201. It’s along those same lines of love, the Caribbean, and summer. It’s all things that I like.

What more can you tell us about your next album?

It’s an album that I dreamed about and I’m making it happen. I never imagined making an album with very big names. They’re pillars of the industry. With these collaborations, I’m seeing myself in the same league as these artists. I’m very excited for what’s next. As I’m working on my album, there’s other collaborations coming. You know I’m always working and putting out music. I’m seeing how I can keep offering something beautiful from myself to my fans.

Militarie Gun Unveil The Melancholic New Single ‘God Owes Me Money’

Militarie Gun is getting ready to fire as their new album God Save The Gun is out later this week. In what will presumably be their final pre-release single, today (October 13), the band shared “God Owes Me Money.”

The song is marked by its punishing guitars accompanied by synths that cut through the heaviness. A press release describes the track as a “focal point” of the new album.

The band’s Ian Shelton previously said of the album:

“I’m well aware that being this vulnerable turns my personal trauma into a marketing hook for this album. But I’m fine with it, if not provoking it. Over the past couple years, as I spoke about addiction from the perspective of someone affected by it, I became the one struggling with it. There’s a farcical logic to entering a situation, fully knowing the consequences, and doing it anyway — but that’s where my head was when I started leaning on drinking.”

Listen to “God Owes Me Money” above. Below, find the God Save The Gun cover art and tracklist, as well as Militarie Gun’s upcoming tour dates.

‘The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants’: Everything To Know

The SpongeBob Movie Search For SquarePants top
YouTube

Ahead of the movie’s release, keep reading for everything you need to know before it hits theaters.

Plot

An official description reads, “Desperate to be a big guy, SpongeBob sets out to prove his bravery to Mr. Krabs by following The Flying Dutchman — a mysterious swashbuckling ghost pirate — on a seafaring comedy-adventure that takes him to the deepest depths of the deep sea, where no Sponge has gone before.”

Director Derek Drymon, who was been involved with SpongeBob since the beginning, told Collider of the film:

“I feel like this is a movie you come to where you really can laugh, and you can enjoy it. You can go with your family, go with your friends. What we stressed was just the fun and the silliness. It’s just a fun, kind of silly, dumb adventure. A lot of jokes. I’m hoping that people laugh all the way through it. There are big cinematic moments in it, which are nice. In the long form, you can do things that are bigger than you can do in a short. Still, we’re taking moments, taking time for SpongeBob and Patrick to do their silly stuff within this big adventure.”

Cast

The movie stars the usual voice cast: Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick Star, Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward Tentacles, Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy Cheeks, and Mr. Lawrence as Plankton. Joining them are Regina Hall, Sherry Cola, Arturo Castro, George Lopez, Ice Spice, and Mark Hamill.

Drymon said of working with Hamill:

“I was trying to be professional at all times with Mark, but it was definitely fun. I was probably in third grade when Star Wars came out, so I grew up a big Star Wars person. I’d worked with him once before on another show, so I had a little experience with him. But he is just the sweetest. He’s the nicest, sweetest guy, and super easy to work with. He just wants to know what you want, and then he can turn and become that villain.”

Release Date

The film is set to hit theaters on Christmas, December 25.

Outkast Will Be Inducted Into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame By JID And Killer Mike

Next month, Outkast will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, and it’s only fitting that they’ll be ushered in by a pair of their most frequent collaborators and one of the scions of their psychedelic ATLien legacy.

Killer Mike and Sleepy Brown will be along to help induct the Atlanta rap pioneers, with whom they’ve collaborated on hits like “The Whole World,” “I Can’t Wait,” and “The Way You Move.” In addition, JID, the rising Atlanta rapper whose albums DiCaprio 2, The Forever Story, and God Does Like Ugly have drawn comparisons to Outkast’s P-funk-inspired style, will also perform at the ceremony, which takes place on November 8 in Los Angeles at the Peacock Theater. The ceremony will stream live on Disney Plus.

In addition to being inspired by Outkast, JID was recently given the opportunity to perform with André 3000 on his upcoming deluxe edition of God Does Like Ugly — although, Three Stacks is more likely to play his flute than spit a verse. JID previously collaborated with Big Boi on Masego’s “Garden Party” in 2021.

Upon their induction, Outkast will become the 13th hip-hop act to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. 2Pac, A Tribe Called Quest, Eminem, Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, The Notorious B.I.G., Public Enemy, and Run-DMC are among the only other hip-hop acts in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Questlove’s Earth, Wind & Fire Documentary Is Coming To HBO In 2026

earth wind & fire
Getty Image

Last year, Questlove announced his next documentary project would be about legendary Chicago funk band Earth, Wind & Fire. Today, Deadline revealed it’ll be released on HBO in 2026.

In his post announcing the project, Quest wrote, “Coming in 2025…..the definitive story of the elements. The story of how a band led by a genius from Chicago changed our way of thinking, our minds and our hearts. Having been baptized in the Afrocentric joy river of this powerhouse unit, I’ve learned about them, I’ve learned about us & more importantly I’ve learned about and rediscovered myself in the process. I’m so excited to be directing a documentary preserving their positive but VERY vulnerable and real story of soul, self & struggle. This is the story of joy, persistence, love, pain, magic and self discovery. This is Earth, Wind & Fire.”

While he announced that the project would be “coming in 2025,” it seemed that he’d instead dedicated that release window to a documentary celebrating the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live. Quest’s previous film projects included documentaries focusing on the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival (Summer Of Soul, for which he won an Oscar in 2022) and Sly Stone.

Producers on the Earth, Wind & Fire documentary also include Dave Sirulnick, Samantha Grogin, KB White, and Arron Saxe, with executive producers Zarah Zohlman, Shawn Gee, Jon Kamen, Cheo Hodari Coker, and Amos Newman.

All The Best New Music From This Week That You Need To Hear

bnm
Getty Image/Derrick Rossignol

Keeping up with new music can be exhausting, even impossible. From the weekly album releases to standalone singles dropping on a daily basis, the amount of music is so vast it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Even following along with the Uproxx recommendations on a daily basis can be a lot to ask, so every Monday we’re offering up this rundown of the best new music this week.

This week saw Gorillaz continue to scale The Mountain and Jisoo take a Blackpink detour to focus on solo work. Yeah, it was a great week for new music. Check out the highlights below.

For more music recommendations, check out our Listen To This section, as well as our Indie Mixtape newsletter.

Gorillaz — “The Manifesto” Feat. Trueno and Proof

We’re still nearly half a year away from Gorillaz’s next album, The Mountain. But, the band is starting the promo cycle well in advance, and last week, they dropped “The Manifesto.” The track features Trueno and a posthumous verse from Proof, which comes from a freestyle that was recorded early in his career.

Jisoo and Zayn — “Eyes Closed”

Jisoo is in the middle of touring with Blackpink at the moment, but that isn’t stopping her from dropping new solo music. Well, not quite “solo”: Last week, she and Zayn partnered on “Eyes Closed,” which arrived alongside a futuristic, space-faring video.

Fred Again.. — “OGdub” Feat. Danny Brown, Beam, and Parisi

USB, Fred’s constantly evolving album to which he adds new songs periodically, is back. We’ve heard a couple new songs from the latest batch so far, with the most recent one being “OGdub,” which features Danny Brown (via a sample of “Burfict!” by him and Jpegmafia), Beam, and Parisi.

Khalid — “Nah”

Khalid’s new album After The Sun Goes Down is out now and he found a cool way to mark the release last week. The singer shared a video for “Nah,” and while it’s thematically pretty straightforward, it’s a VR-enabled clip, so check it out in your headset of choice (or just manually move the frame around on other devices).

Haim and Bon Iver — “Tie You Down”

After dropping I Quit earlier this year, Haim is returning this week with a deluxe edition. Along with the 15 songs from the original album, there are three new cuts, including the country-inspired “Tie You Down,” a collaboration with Bon Iver.

Alemeda and Doechii — “Beat A B!tch Up”

TDE is best known for its rappers, but they’re also the label home of Alemeda, whose much more firmly in the alternative rock lane. Given her access to the hip-hop world, though, she got a Doechii feature on “Beat A B!tch Up” and the song is a cool opportunity to hear her in a much different context than we’re used to.

Fcukers — “I Like It Like That”

Hopefully Fcukers have a new album on the way, because they singles they’ve shared lately have been super cool. Last week, they dropped off “I Like It Like That,” an immediate head-bobber produced by Kenneth Blume (also known as Kenny Beats).

Jay Som — “Past Lives” Feat. Hayley Williams

Belong, the first new Jay Som album since 2019, is finally out now. Among the highlights is “Past Lives,” a reflective number that includes an assist from Paramore icon Hayley Williams.

PinkPantheress — “Illegal + Anitta”

PinkPantheress isn’t finished with her album Fancy That following its release earlier this year, as last week, she released Fancy Some More?, a remix album with a bunch of new features. For her viral hit “Illegal,” she got Brazilian superstar Anitta on board.

Labrinth — “Orchestra”

Labrinth dropped his Prelude EP just last month, but as the title suggests, it was the start of more to come. Indeed, there is more, as he followed the project last week with the dynamic new single “Orchestra.”

Rosé Reveals She And Bruno Mars Had ‘The Biggest Fight’ Right Before Shooting The ‘APT.’ Video

Rosé and Bruno Mars proved to be an excellent team on “APT.,” one of the biggest hit singles of 2024; The song made her the first K-pop artist to win Song Of The Year at the VMAs last month. There was some tension, though, as Rosé has revealed.

In a new Vogue video, Rosé was asked to tell a story about her and Bruno “that no one else knows.” Laughing throughout her response, Rosé said:

“Me and Bruno, oh my gosh… I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this, but… I had the biggest fight with Bruno right before the music video shoot, but we made up on set, so it was alright. Oh my God, he’s going to kill me… let’s not fight. Let’s be friends.”

Rosé previously explained the meaning of the song, saying, “‘APT.’ is actually my favorite Korean drinking game that I play with my friends back home. It’s so simple, puts a smile on your face, and breaks the ice at any party. One night in the studio I taught my crew how to play the game. Everyone was fascinated, especially when I started the chant, so we played around with it and I said we should make a song out of it… and after Bruno joined the track, the rest became history!”

Charli XCX Made A Surprise ‘SNL’ Appearance As Role Model’s ‘Sally’ For His Performance

Maine singer-songwriter Role Model has emerged as one of the biggest rising pop stars of the past year, thanks largely to the success of his single “Sally, When The Wine Runs Out.” The song has also provided one of the most fun concert gimmicks in recent memory: When Role Model performs the song live, he invites somebody from the audience, more frequently a celebrity lately, on stage to dance and be his “Sally.” This summer, for example, while performing at Governors Ball, Conan Gray had the honor (and even planted a kiss on Role Model).

So, when he made his debut appearance as a Saturday Night Live musical guest this past weekend, it was essentially a given that he would sing the song, and that he’d probably get somebody special to be his Sally. Indeed, he did, as Charli XCX was the one to make the surprise appearance.

Elsewhere, Role Model also performed the single “Some Protector.”

The singer’s appearance comes amid a particularly musical stretch for SNL. The show just returned for a new season earlier this month with an episode hosted by Bad Bunny with musical guest Doja Cat. Next week, Sabrina Carpenter is pulling double duty as both host and musical guest.

SNX: This Week’s Best Sneakers, Featuring The Jordan 5 Soft Pink & More

Oct 10_Weekly Shoe Drops_Editorial Image_1024x450
New Balance/Adidas/Nike/Uproxx

Welcome to SNX DLX, your weekly roundup of the best sneakers to hit the internet. The fall sneaker season continues to surprise us! Autumn is usually when sneaker brands start losing steam, dropping releases that feel like an afterthought in anticipation of the winter sales, but this year we’re seeing brands buck that trend.

And hey, who are we to complain? If the big brands want to have an unexpected second wind and (hopefully) save what has been a pretty uneventful sneaker year so far, we’re inclined to let them. But like most weeks this year, we’re really only seeing representation from the big three. So if you’re a Nike, New Balance or Adidas fan, you’re likely to be happy!

Let’s dive into the best sneaker drops of the week.

Nike SB Dunk Low Pro Persian Violet and Off Noir

Nike

Price: $120

Dunk’s always look best with a simplistic design, and it doesn’t get much simpler than this Persian Violet and Off Noir variation. The sneaker sports a suede upper with black and purple panels with a cinnamon-colored swoosh, laces, and branding over a gum sole.

There isn’t anything particularly flashy or exciting about this colorway, but that’s kind of what makes it so effective.

The Nike SB Dunk Low Pro Persian Violet and Off Noir is out now for a retail price of $120. Pick up a pair at Adidas or aftermarket sites like GOAT.

New Balance Amine x New Balance ABZORB 2000 Biblioteca

New Balance

Price: $179.99

Singer, rapper, and friend of Tyler the Creator and Andre 3000 (we should all be so lucky) Amine, has linked up with New Balance for a bright and vibrant take of the ABZORB 2000 silhouette. The sneaker sports a mesh upper with psychedelic swirling overlays, embroidered details, and glow in the dark details that give this sneaker a sort of surreal and futuristic vibe.

According to Amine, the sneaker’s colorway is inspired by his local library growing up in Portland Oregon.

The Amine x New Balance ABZORB 2000 is out now for a retail price of $179.99. Pick up a pair at New Balance or aftermarket sites like GOAT.

Nike Air Force 1 07 Mid Flax and Outdoor Green

Nike

Price: $140

There is something incredibly ‘90s streetwear about this monochromatic take on the AF-1. The sneaker sports a mid-top silhouette with a nubuck leather upper in Nike’s Flax colorway with a tiny hint of forest green on the tongue, heel branding, and strap Swoosh.

The sneaker looks straight out of a vintage rap video, and we’re fully on board.

The Nike Air Force 1 o7 Mid Flax and Outdoor Green is out now for a retail price of $140. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app or aftermarket sites like GOAT.

Nike Ja 3 White and Coconut Milk

Nike

Price: $125

The Ja 3 is here! Ja Morant’s latest from Nike features the brand’s ZoomX foam for added bounce and energy return with a lightweight upper for fast court play. Our favorite detail is the jagged Ja logos adding a tactile feel across the sneaker and extending to the shoe’s outsole.

The left shoe’s Swoosh features a diving motif that adds a nice visual flair to the otherwise simple design. It looks futuristic, like a new signature basketball sneaker in 2025 should.

The Nike Ja 3 White and Coconut Milk is out now for a retail price of $125. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app or aftermarket sites like GOAT.

Adidas TaeKwondo MEI SFTM Cream White/Core Black

Adidas

Price: $130

With the renewed popularity of ballerina flats in women’s fashion, it makes sense that Adidas would want to get in on that action without, you know, actually designing a new silhouette. Enter the Taekwondo, originally released in the early 2000s (based on a 1988 Olympics design) this sneaker features a leather upper with synthetic lining and an ultra low-profile silhouette and a partially uncovered outsole.

It’s a unique look but if you’ve got style, this can look fantastic.

The Adidas Taekwondo MEI SFTM Cream White/Core Black is set to drop on October 10th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $130. Pick up a pair at Adidas or aftermarket sites like GOAT.
