Woman who went from a size 18 to a size 6 gets candid about her newfound ‘skinny privilege’

There are many different types of social privilege. We most often talk about the privilege associated with class, race or sex, but the inherent advantages of being thin are certainly substantial as well.

Take a 3-second scroll through your social media platform of choice, and you’ll see the endless messages—both insidious and overt—that glorify thin and/or muscular bodies while shaming other body types. Having a body that is celebrated by society offers benefits like respectability, kindness and even better health care. That is thin privilege, aka skinny privilege, in a nutshell.

And if there’s any doubt as to whether or not this privilege exists, take it from those who have lost weight and were suddenly treated differently (read: better).

Meg Stier, an actress and motivational speaker based in New York, is one of those people. Stier recently got candid about all the unexpected changes that came after she went from a size 18 to a size 6 in a video posted to her TikTok.

And while Stier noted that this was “not an attack on skinny people,” adding that they have their own problems too, her stance was clear that—at least in her own experience—skinny privilege definitely exists, and we need to talk about it.

@megmackenzies Anyone else experince these things? #bodyacceptance #nyc #bodypositivity #performer #lifestyle #weightloss ♬ original sound – Meg Mackenzies

The list included conveniences like being able to find her size in any store to being shown more basic human decency, like people looking her in the eye when they speak to her and actually listening when she speaks.

Even her career “took off” the moment she lost weight. “I didn’t suddenly become more talented, smarter or better at my job,” she said. “I just looked different.”

In fact, Stier can now make the same lifestyle choices she made when she was larger without outside judgment, simply because she looks different.

“Nobody judges when I order a cheeseburger or a salad. I can literally eat whatever I want in public, and nobody thinks twice about it” she revealed. She can also go to the gym without people giving her sympathetic looks.

“People considered me unmotivated, unhealthy, and in general just lazy because I was bigger. Those are three words that no one would use to describe me now, and my lifestyle really hasn’t changed that much,” she said.

“There’s a serious bias against fat people, and unless you’ve lived on both sides of the spectrum it’s hard to fully grasp what that means,” she concluded. “Skinny privilege is a thing, and even I find myself taking advantage of it.”

Stier is not alone in her experience. Her video received a ton of comments from other people who had lost weight and were treated better because of it. Some even shared the congratulations they got after losing weight due to illness.

Not only that, but there are literally thousands of videos on TikTok under the hashtags #skinnyprivilege and #thinprivilege reflecting similar stories, all attesting that it is in fact a real thing. Many even reflected on what it was like to gain some weight back and return to being “invisible.”

@itsmekelsc Today I chose the sassy life 💁🏼‍♀️ but it had to be said. The difference in treatment from strangers is WILD #weightbias #obesitybias #skinnyprivledge #obesity #weightloss #weightlossjourney #pcos #pcosawareness #mounjaro #ozempic ♬ original sound – Kelsey ✨

As with all forms of societal privilege, addressing the issue starts with spreading awareness. Social media might add to the problem with the way it often sells the idea of thinness and beauty as status enhancers, but it can also be a great tool in ending stigma as well. Conservations like the one Stier and others are having helps us take a closer look at our own beliefs and hopefully challenge them.

We’ve already seen the ways challenging the status quo can create actual change. The exploitative nature of capitalism aside, think about all the brands that have adapted to a more diverse, inclusive beauty standard due to real people taking a stand. Think of how much more body neutrality is a part of our collective mindset than it was only a few short years ago. Clearly, we still have ways to go, but part of progress is getting real with what’s in front of us.

77 percent of Gen Xers want to go back to the pre-internet days. Here are 9 things we miss.

A new Harris poll reported by Fast Company found that older Millennials and Gen Xers are the age group that would most like to return to a time before the internet and smartphones. Seventy-seven percent of Americans aged 35 to 54 wanted to return to the pre-internet era compared to 63% of those aged 18 to 34 and 60% of those over 55.

What’s interesting about the poll was that regardless of age, more people wanted to return to a simpler time when we weren’t connected 24/7. It’s like we ran headfirst into a technological revolution without considering whether we should. Now, we have some regrets.

That’s why it’s not shocking that multiple scientific studies had found that today’s mental health crisis just happens to coincide with the adoption of smartphone technology.

There have been a lot of gains that humanity has made since the dawn of the internet. But there have also been a lot of sacrifices. A lot of the things we’ve lost have been those that made us happy and carefree.

Here are 9 things that people miss about the pre-internet world.

Less exposure to negativity

The psychological concept of negativity bias shows us that the human mind is obsessed with focusing on adversity at the expense of the positive, creating an unbalanced worldview. The internet age exposes us to a barrage of constant negativity, whether that’s crazy comments on social media, a steady diet of negative stories from the news media or continuous coverage of a political climate that’s become more divisive and adversarial.

We didn’t have to defend our sanity from being exposed to this level of anger and fear in the pre-internet era.

Living for the moment, not the like

It seems that many activities people engage in these days aren’t for the experience in and of itself but for the opportunity to take a photo and share it on social media. But there’s a big difference between enjoying the moment and filming it. When 20,000 phones go up because everyone wants to get a video of Taylor Swift singing “Anti-Hero,” are those people really enjoying the moment or missing it because they’re focused on documenting it to share on Facebook later that night?

No 24-hour news cycle

The 24-hour news cycle started in 1980 when CNN launched on cable TV networks nationwide. But that seems like the Stone Age compared to today when people obsess over the news and follow it as it happens on social media, especially Twitter. While staying informed is important, things have gone out of balance, leading people to be addicted to the news. Studies show that people who obsessively follow the news are more likely to suffer from stress, anxiety and physical ill health.

Further, in the world of social media, we don’t just follow the news; as we comment, like, and share stories, we help disseminate it, making it part of our social identities.

Wouldn’t it be cool if we could go back to turning on the national news at 6:30 pm every night, finding out what’s happening in the world in 30 minutes and then turning it off until the next day?

Physical music

It seems that people’s attitudes toward music have really changed in the streaming era. In the pre-streaming era, it cost $12.99 for a new CD or a vinyl LP, but you cherished it more. You were invested in the music.

“With streaming, things were starting to become quite throwaway and disposable,” Finlay Shakespeare, a musician and audio engineer, told The Guardian. “If I didn’t gel with an album or an artist’s work at first, I tended not to go back to it.” But music as an art form is designed to grow on people after multiple listens. How many CDs have you bought that you didn’t like at first, and then after three or four listens, it really grew on you?

Privacy

Ever have one of those nights where you went out with your friend or significant other and asked them not to “post that we’re here”? You may have fibbed with other people about your plans and didn’t want to get caught by posting about it online. That’s the world we live in today. It’s easy for anyone to know almost anything about you and how to get in touch. It’s not just because we post things on social media; there are countless databases online where people can learn almost anything about you.

It’s a far cry from living in the ‘80s when the only way to know about someone was if they appeared in the newspaper or the phonebook. Now, if someone wants to find you, they can, and it’s a little scary.

Photographs

These days people take hundreds, maybe thousands of photos every year, many of which they never look at. Before smartphones, every photo you took was precious, and it could take up to two weeks to get developed by the Fotomat. Today’s technology makes taking pictures and sharing them with friends much easier. But how many do we actually print out and frame in our homes? Even though we have all of these photos, they are all trapped in a digital vault, and maybe, just one day, we’ll frame a few.

Focus

When was the last time you felt you could spend two hours working on something uninterrupted without being distracted by a text, ping, Slack message, Facebook update, SPAM call, pop-up on your computer monitor, or a compelling desire to stop what you’re doing and scroll through Twitter? If someone from 1995 were frozen in time and woke up with today’s level of distraction and digital harassment, they’d probably run to go live in the forest. But, like frogs in water that are slowly coming to a boil, the change has been so gradual that we didn’t realize that we were creating a world where focus now comes at a premium.

Less comparison

Social media has taken social comparisons to a whole new level. As humans, we naturally compare ourselves to our peers, whether looking up at those doing better or down at those who don’t seem to be faring so well. But in the age of social media, we see a constant stream of people getting to do the things we wish we were doing and buying the things we wish we had. They’re on vacation while we’re at work. They have a new house, and we’re in an apartment. Their kids are excelling at sports and ours will barely leave the house.

The problem is that social media presents a funhouse mirror view of other people’s lives because they only tend to share complimentary things. You don’t hear about people’s financial problems, marriage difficulties, or see if their kids get bad grades. You only see the good stuff.

In-person shopping

The poll that kicked off this article stated that 77% of those between the ages of 35 and 54 would like to return to an era before smartphones and the internet. That was a time when if you wanted a new shirt, you had to go to the mall to buy one. Obviously, with Amazon, things are so much easier now. But the world where we got our friends together and roamed the mall looking for a shirt and, along the way, bumped into our crushes and wolfed down a Cinnabon provided so many social opportunities that we’re missing out on these days. Convenience is great, but it’s no substitute for living.

DIY newbie is making other ‘YouTube University’ contractors feel less alone in viral series

Do-it-yourself shows like “Fixer Upper,” “Flip or Flop” and “Good Bones” have everyone wanting to try their hand at fixing up their own house. The only difference is the people on the shows have accumulated experience, have contractors doing most of the work and have lenders bankrolling their expenditures for the camera.

Your average person is flying nearly solo, likely with a reluctant relative desperately trying to keep expectations realistic. Alex D’Alessio is one of those average people with a reluctant relative—in this case, his spouse. The amateur handyman runs the TikTok page Real Life Renovations and has been going viral on social media as he attempts to remodel his townhouse in the most relatable way possible, full of mistakes and do-overs.

There’s no perfect transition with D’Alessio and the projects he’s working on. He learns most things from YouTube, which has been dubbed “YouTube University” by him and those that use the platform to learn new skills. (I was once a student myself, learning how to dismantle and clean out a lawnmower carburetor. You can learn just about anything on the site if you’re brave enough.)

D’Alessio recently spoke to CBS Mornings about his renovation adventures, giving an inside look at how his approach has made him the king of DIY. Before becoming a full-time content creator, D’Alessio had never even used power tools. He worked in a corporate job making decent money, so his wife and mother-in-law were skeptical of his choices.

“I gave him six months. And I said by March of 2021, if you don’t have something lined up or if it’s not getting better, then you’re going back to work,” D’Alessio’s wife told CBS.

Thankfully, the paid partnerships started rolling in, and he soon started making more money than he was in corporate America. There’s something refreshing and realistic about watching a novice learn how to DIY. It gives you hope that you can also take on projects, too. In the interview below, you can see him attempt to help the CBS anchor with a project that, unsurprisingly, requires assistance from YouTube.

Bonnaroo’s Festivalgoers Apparently Keep Accidentally Calling The Cops From Moshing Way Too Hard

Bonnaroo is apparently getting extra wild this year after reports have been made about iPhone users accidentally calling the authorities.

One of Apple’s latest features is for crash detection and automatic alerts for help when “extreme accelerations or decelerations” occur according to Stereogum.

These calls must have been wildly prevalent from cell phone and Apple Watch owners as the Manchester Police issued a statement on social media. “MPD has responded to multiple accidental 911 calls at Bonnaroo,” they wrote. “It’s likely that these calls are a result of ‘Crash Detection Mode,’ a new feature on Apple iPhones. Please be mindful and consider deactivating this feature on your phone until Bonnaroo concludes.”

Bonnaroo’s festival account took the advice one step further by telling concertgoers how to turn the feature off — considering most likely weren’t aware of it or that it automatically called the police. “Let’s work as a team to resolve this! You can take action by going Settings>Emergency SOS and deactivating the “crash” feature,” they tweeted.

Following the news, a few other music lovers on social media had some thoughts and reactions to all the crash detection that was going on there. (Too much moshing, it seems.)

View some of those reactions below.

Blackpink Fans React To The Band’s Super Sweet Behind-The-Scenes Footage From Their Coachella Shows

Blackpink fans are reacting to a sweet set of moments between Jennie and her other bandmates taking in their record-breaking Coachella 2023 set. The scenes were included in the band’s recently-released B.P.M Roll #23 on YouTube.

It starts off by finding Rosé and Jisoo planning to surprise Jennie with the news that they’ve been selected to headline the massive California festival.

“This is a video that needs to be released later after Coachella,” Jisoo said.

“I think you should film us telling Jennie,” Rosé added. “Jennie, shocking news. Something big is about to happen.”

Paul Tolett, Coachella’s co-founder, is also following along to surprise Jennie.

“Tonight’s show was really great,” he tells Jennie. “There’s something I want to tell you. We want you to headline Coachella.”

Jennie’s face then goes into complete shock as Rosé laughs and hugs her. The four eventually all do a group hug to celebrate the news.

Throughout the rest of the vlog, the Blackpink girls share behind-the-scenes footage of them getting emotionally prepared to take the stage — and some live parts from the actual concert.

“Just within the four years, we made it from Sahara to the main stage,” Jennie told the crowd during their headlining performance back in April. “It’s just like a dream and it’s all because of you guys!”

The Best New Hip-Hop This Week

The best new hip-hop this week includes albums, videos, and songs from Doja Cat, Killer Mike, Wiz Khalifa and more.

This week, the new releases are flying fast and furious as Gunna makes his heavily anticipated comeback after nearly year-long incarceration. Meanwhile, more long-awaited comebacks find Doja Cat in full-on boom-bap mode and Killer Mike flying solo for the first time in a decade. Rappers releasing singles included Coi Leray, D Smoke, Foggieraw, Gucci Mane, IDK, Saucy Santana, Trippie Redd, and Tyga & YG. That’s one busy week, right?

Well, it doesn’t stop there. While we’re going to pass over projects like Chingy’s return album Chinglish (even though I maintain he was a better rapper than he ever got credit for) and Kool Keith’s Black Elvis 2, there’s still plenty to dig into this week.

Here is the best of hip-hop this week ending June 16, 2023.

Albums/EPs/Mixtapes

Gunna — A Gift And A Curse

gunna a gift and a curse
Gunna

Gunna’s back after being locked up for over six months awaiting trial on reportedly trumped-up charges. Amid a backlash for supposedly snitching on his YSL brethren, Gunna returns with a lot to talk about, which he does without the assistance of many longtime collaborators.

Hit-Boy & Big Hit — Surf Or Drown 2

hit boy big hit surf or drown 2
Hit-Boy

It turns out Hit-Boy saved some of his best beats for his dad. Big Hit also recently returned home from an enforced vacation, and joins his hit-making offspring on what might be the best father-son outing since Goofy and Max crashed that Power Line concert.

Killer Mike — Michael

Killer Mike

It’s odd to think that Killer Mike has been in the game over 20 years and yet, for a good portion of that time he was often thought of as the guy who hung out with Outkast or one-half of Run The Jewels. Allow him to reintroduce himself.

Mike Dimes — Texas Boy

mike dimes texas boy
Mike Dimes

The other Mike dropping this week is getting his introduction in early after building a strong resume with his In Dimes We Trust mixtape and strong collabs with artists like IDK and Dro Kenji. He deserves the attention he’s been getting.

Price — Gospel In The Ghetto

price gospel in the ghetto
Price

While Hit-Boy is the better known Inland Empire native to drop this week, his longtime friend and collaborator Price (formerly Price Tag of Audio Push) drops his own independent project. If you missed out on the last 10 years of his development, this is the perfect chance to get up on one of the West Coast’s most dynamic talents.

Wiz Khalifa — See Ya

wiz khalifa see ya
Wiz Khalifa

Wiz dropped off a surprise collection of breezy, enjoyable songs ahead of his upcoming High School Reunion Tour with Snoop Dogg. They’re perfectly positioned to soundtrack some warm weather fun.

Singles/Videos

Dej Loaf — “Space Jam”

The pint-sized punchline maestro from Detroit hasn’t lost a step since her breakthrough with “Try Me,” and continues to show her gift for melodic deliveries that sink their hooks into your eardrums and truly dig in.

Fresco Trey — “Back In My Shell”

The Memphis rap crooner reflects on the breakdown of a relationship in this lovelorn, introspective ballad. Asking for some clarity, he threatens to go back into his shell — relatable, honestly.

Kota The Friend — “Barcelona” Feat. Samm Henshaw

Kota’s been releasing a string of upbeat, dance-infused singles ahead of his next project, which aims to take advantage of the uptick in breezy, EDM-inspired albums that have been coming out lately. His have had more of a live band feel, which helps set them apart.

Ncognita — “LA” Feat. Kalan.FrFr

The Los Angeles rapper who garnered recognition for being signed to Issa Rae’s Raedio record label drops a smooth single bolstered by Kalan’s singsong hook and a bubbly beat that will sure sound nice being played out of car stereos on Crenshaw.

Shady Blu — “Hoedown” Feat. Zoe Osama

Shady Blu might be from LA, but her new track could just as easily ride out at a party in Texas, Memphis, or Atlanta as it could in LA or the Bay. It’s a hypnotic, upbeat party track that showcases SB’s hit-writing potential.

Wynne — “Hot Friend”

Wynne’s been on a mission to expand her fanbase lately, blending her intricate, wordplay-laden bars with more radio-friendly production, and to be honest, a lot of it is working. With her recent freestyle for Sway In The Morning going viral, her latest single arrives right on time to capture curious ears out looking for more of her work.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Trump’s Team Is Reportedly Freaking Out Over Reports That Jack Smith Might File More Charges In New Jersey (And For January 6)

As Donald Trump already weathered a damning federal indictment in Miami over his mishandling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, reports of more charges coming from special counsel Jack Smith began to intensify. According to insiders, those reports are causing Trump’s people to freak out.

While stopping by Morning Joe on Friday, Way Too Early host Jonathan Lemire said Trump’s team is rattled by Smith who has proven to be a relentless opponent that’s unfazed by the former president’s usual bullying tactics.

“He is facing someone now in Jack Smith who they simply don’t know, they feel like they can’t intimidate,” Lemire said. “He is someone who seems immune to what their typical playbook is, which is the smoke screen and the attacks, the assertions of bias and, to this point, that just hasn’t worked.”

Smith also seems to be moving on Trump from multiple fronts. On top of the Miami indictment, there are reports that Smith is looking to file new charges in New Jersey for Trump’s mishandling of documents at his Bedminster golf club. Oh, and don’t forget about Georgia.

Via Raw Story:

“We see the New Jersey thing, I also heard last night from a few people in the Trump world saying, we’re not sure how real that is, but they also can’t rule it out,” he continued. “They didn’t expect all that’s happened to this point. We know that it’s not just New York, which they actually feel fine about. They’re deeply concerned about the Mar-a-Lago documents, and they’re really worried still about Georgia. Georgia has been the one that’s been the flashing light for them all along.”

But, wait, there’s more. According to the Wall Street Journal, Smith is also actively investigating the January 6 attacks and recently brought in two Nevada Republican party officials as the special counsel delves into the events that led to the insurrectionist riot following Trump’s “Stop the Steal” really.

Patrick Mahomes Responded To Ja’Marr Chase’s Dig Over Who Is The Best Player In The NFL

The same two teams have squared off in the AFC Championship Game in each of the last two years. Back in 2022, the Cincinnati Bengals shocked the Kansas City Chiefs to earn a spot in the Super Bowl, and last year, the Chiefs were able to enact a measure of revenge en route to lifting the Lombardi Trophy.

With respect to guys like Josh Allen and Justin Herbert, the Bengals and Chiefs have the two best quarterbacks in the NFL in Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes. While most folks — including Burrow — would say that Mahomes is the better of the two players and is therefore the best player in the NFL, Cincinnati receiver Ja’Marr Chase doesn’t agree. He recently said Burrow is the best player in the league, and when he was told that Burrow believes that title belongs to “Pat,” all Chase could respond with was “Pat Who?”

It’s a funny dig, as the implication here is that Burrow really likes Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth or something, but unsurprisingly, Mahomes had something to say about it. The Chiefs got their championship rings on Thursday night, and Mahomes used this as a chance to let Chase know who his QB meant.

We’ll have to wait and see if Burrow and Mahomes get to battle in the playoffs again, but one thing is guaranteed: The two will go head-to-head at Arrowhead Stadium on New Year’s Eve this season.

D Smoke And SiR Enjoy The Fruits Of Their Labor With ‘Work Hard Play Hard’

The Farris brothers are back at it. D Smoke, who has expanded his artistic portfolio with an acting role in the Paramount Plus series The Mayor Of Kingstown, returns to his day job with “Work Hard Play Hard,” a laid-back new single that celebrates his success with the help of his younger brother SiR. As he’s done in the past, Smiddoke raps in both English and Spanish, surveying and contrasting the difficulties of labor and the pleasures of the payoff.

Both brothers would certainly know a thing or two about that. While D Smoke has slowly but surely risen in stature in the rap world behind his appearance in Netflix’s Rhythm + Flow, the Inglewood rapper continued his independent grind, dropping beloved bangers like “Say Go” and “Crossover” with Westside Boogie. Meanwhile, SiR has been slowly rolling out the successor to his 2019 album Chasing Summer with singles such as “Life Is Good” and “Nothing Even Matters.

Neither has yet announced an album but with their increased activity in recent months, it’s likely safe to say that such an announcement can’t be too far away. In the meantime, you can enjoy the Inglewood natives’ newest single “Work Hard Play Hard” in the video above.
