All The Best Things We Ate And Drank At Outside Lands

Outside Lands_Festival_Food Feature_1024x450

Outside Lands is the prime major music festival, with a focus on food and drinks just as much as the music. There were close to 100 food vendors set up at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, ready to showcase their local cuisine for the upwards of 70,000 attendees per day at the fest. And just like the music, the food and beverage offerings keep getting better.

“You want people to look at a row of options and have enough diversity to make their decision really hard when it comes to what they’re going to land on,” Outside Lands food curator Tanya Kollar told us before the fest.

And the “Taste of the Bay Area” options did precisely that. While favorites like Reem’s California and Sandy’s Muffuletta’s were consistently selling out of items, there was still SO much to choose from. Ditto for the local beer slate at Beer Lands and the Wine Lands options from nearby Napa and Sonoma county wineries. With that, here are the best bites and sips from Outside Lands.

Peruvian Choripán From Michoz

Adrian Spinelli

There were several hyped pop-ups at the fest, and they rose to the occasion. Michoz is a Peruvian-Eritrean concept, and their Peruvian Choripan might’ve been the single best festival food item I had over the weekend. This was an essay in salt/acid/fat/heat symbiosis with a Peruvian chicken sausage flavored with smoky aji panca pepper on a ciabatta roll, along with zingy chimichurri, mayo, and a salsa criolla made with red onion, lime, and herbs.

Smoked Brisket Bento From Provecho

Adrian Spinelli

Speaking of pop-ups, Oaxacan-fusionist Provecho had consistent lines all weekend long; a testament to how Outside Lands serves as a gateway for some of the most happening food in the Bay. From a tuna tostada to sushi bento boxes, Provecho’s whole menu was on point. But the smoky, salty, and umami AF brisket was my favorite among the many brisket options at the fest. The smoke flavor was pronounced and precise, along with an exemplary smoke ring, textured pull, and perfect saltiness. In an inspired Texan-Oaxacan-Cali presentation, it was awesome to see this workhorse cross-Bay pop-up operation shine.

Mala Honey Wings From Piglet & Co

Adrian Spinelli

Late Friday night, The Mission District’s Piglet & Co. was like an oasis with its plump and crispy Mala Honey Wings waiting for me. Sichuan peppercorns and a honey glaze gave these a spicy and sweet flavor. Triple-fried, they were crispy as heck, but still wildly juicy. I was dipping these in a yuzu ranch as Doja Cat jumped into “Paint The Town Red,” and if you can’t get down with that, I don’t get you.

Embered Oysters From Angler

While Angler’s Parker House rolls with crème fraîche and a generous dollop of caviar made the rounds on the ‘gram, it was the Michelin-starred oysters with smoked chili butter cooked in live fire embers that blew my mind the most. Keeping festival food hot is a challenge, but the cooking technique on these was a cheat code. The smoked chili butter melded immaculately with the hot brine for the alpha bite of the weekend.

BloodRoot Trousseau Gris At Wine Lands

Adrian Spinelli

In 17 years of Outside Lands, Wine Lands has taken shape in every one of them and, in its marvelous open-air tasting experience, has finally achieved its peak form. There are roughly two dozen wineries in the convivial environment, from Napa and Sonoma County, both within 60 miles of the park. I dropped less than $20 and had tastes from a few different spots, but was especially struck by the Trousseau Gris from Healdsburg’s BloodRoot Winest, a lightly sparkling pet-nat that left summer stonefruit and limestone notes on my palate. “I’m so happy that not only does this area still exist,” said Wine Lands curator Peter Eastlake. “It thrives,”

Asian Cajun Surf And Turf From Brenda’s French Soul Food

Adrian Spinelli

I was looking for a proper noodle dish on Sunday, and good lord was this IT. Brenda’s Asian Cajun surf and turf spared no details: Pork belly braised and fried, then blowtorchred with a hoisin BBQ sauce, crispy taro root puffs and garlicky cajun shrimp atop pancit noodles [inhales] cooked down in a soy-based pancit juice with vinegar and sugar, topped with julienned cucumber and red radishes lightly marinated in a rice vinegar [exhales]. I rest my case.

Goin’ Home ESB From Hidden Splendor At Beer Lands

Adrian Spinelli

Beer Lands is always such a pleasure to hit up, for the sheer fact that you can try fresh beer on draft from Bay Area breweries for the same price as a cheap domestic brew from the normal fest bar. The first kegs of local beer, OG (and Beer Lands curator) Dave McLean’s brand new Hidden Splendor brewery, were on at Outside Lands, and the English style Goin’ Home ESB was killer on a warm afternoon. Caramel notes came through on this cold, British-style bitter, and the malty brew was as crushable as McLean’s early creations back in the day at Magnolia Brewing.

Lobster Tail Corn Dog From Um.Ma

Adrian Spinelli

Caviar was the trend of the year at Outside Lands 2025, with a dozen eateries adding it to menu items. But it was Inner Sunset District Korean joint Um.Ma that did it best with this unreal lobster tail corndog that was dipped in a mochi tempura batter with kimchi and gojuchang, then topped with spicy kimchi mayo, loaded with Tsar Nicoulai osetra caviar, and dusted with chives. Only 10 of these were available each day at $45, which isn’t too crazy considering how much high-end food was packed onto this glorious stick.

Butter Chicken Rice Bowl From Tiya

Adrian Spinelli

Is there a more obvious festival food item for a foggy San Francisco day than butter chicken? The Marina’s 1.5-year-old modern Indian restaurant, Tiya, was ladling this velvety goodness out in droves, and I kick-started my Saturday with a bowl. It went super well with Tiya’s shareable crunchy cauliflower pakoda, too.

General Roe’s Caviar Fries At Mamahuhu

Adrian Spinelli

The other limited-run caviar-added order that stood out, and the best batch of fries I had all weekend, was from decorated Chef Brandon Jew’s fast casual Chinese spot Mamahuhu. The MSG-dusted cleaver-cut garlic fries were the ideal scooping shape to dip into a ginger scallion crème fraîche dip that was topped off with Tsar Nicoulai Siberian caviar. It was $35, but sometimes, it’s best not to worry about being judged and just splurge.

‘Project Hail Mary’: Everything To Know About Ryan Gosling’s Upcoming Sci-Fi Epic

Project Hail Mary top
YouTube

Author Andy Weir’s novel The Martian was adapted to the hit 2015 movie of the same name. Weir’s writing will be back on the big screen soon, as his latest book, Project Hail Mary, has been turned into a huge new sci-fi flick starring Ryan Gosling. The elevator pitch: Gosling’s character wakes up in a spacecraft and he doesn’t remember how he got there.

The movie is also a big return for directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller: Project Hail Mary is the first movie they’ve directed in years, since 2014’s 22 Jump Street.

Ahead of the movie’s release, keep reading for everything you need to know before it comes to theaters.

Plot

The official logline reads, “Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.”

In an interview with Space.com, Weir spoke about his involvement in and impressions of the movie, saying:

“They showed it to me well in advance. I’m a producer on this film so I’m involved in giving notes and stuff this time, so it’s kinda cool. It’s nice to pretend I’m a big shot. But I was really psyched. I always try to put myself in the mind of the viewer for movie stuff or reader for book stuff and try to blank my mind and imagine I don’t know anything about the story.”

Cast

The cast is led by Ryan Gosling, Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Lionel Boyce, and Ken Leung.

Weir also discussed his admiration of Gosling and his work on the film, saying, “Ryan is funny. He’s got a good natural understanding of comedy and timing. He was really engaged, and he’d want to talk to me every day about scenes and what’s going through Grace’s mind. I was there for the shoot and on set all the time. That was really cool. I got to be a Hollywood mover and or a shaker. They actually offered to assign me an assistant. I said no, I don’t have enough for an assistant to do. There’s almost nothing more useless on a set than the writer. Although there was a lot more work for me to do than I expected. It was awesome.”

Release Date

The film is set to hit theaters on March 20, 2026.

Justin Bieber Soaks Up Beautiful Iceland In His Gorgeous ‘First Place’ Video

Back in May, Justin Bieber was spotted in Iceland, working on new music that turned out to be his latest album, Swag. He didn’t just lay down tracks while he was in the famously picturesque country, as he also took time to shoot a video for “First Place,” which he shared today (August 13).

The black-and-white visual is a slice-of-life look at how Bieber spent his time at Flóki Studios and the surrounding area: making music, smoking, getting in the water, hopping in a helicopter for a snowboarding excursion, riding bike, exploring, and otherwise enjoying nature, his company, and himself.

This comes shortly after Uproxx’s Philip Cosores visited the studio. In an Uproxx feature, Flóki Studios Director Wade Koeman discussed the appeal of recording there, saying, “I think some people, some artists, really excel and get into this place of creativity when all the distractions are gone. And that’s the idea of Flóki — you’re in the middle of nowhere in a place where, most of the time, you’ve never been. You’re just in this whole new environment and it’s beautiful and peaceful, yet it can be blizzarding and chaotic. It’s nature.”

PinkPantheress Goes Looking For Her ‘Romeo’ In A Speed-Dating Chess Tournament-Set Video

In a cute video for her latest single, “Romeo,” 2000s sample queen PinkPantheress blurs the lines between speed dating and speed chess at a tournament that could just as easily be a singles mixer. The real-life chess master sits down to face off with a variety of hotties, crushing the competition as she makes eyes at her new crush. Half-way through the video, there’s a full-on Big Lebowski-esque dance sequence on a giant chessboard, with the troupe dressed as a marching band. In the end, she doesn’t get the guy, but she does get a big ol’ trophy, and that’ll probably last longer anyway, right?

The “Romeo” video is the latest piece of PP’s Fancy That mixtape rollout, which has so far included similarly imaginative visuals for “Tonight,” “,” and “Stateside,” as well as the British star’s first appearance on US TV, performing on The Tonight Show.

Along the way, fans learned just how tall the nostalgic dance producer really is, found out how badly she wants to collaborate with Sade and Charli XCX, and related to her snobby aspirations for one of Kendrick Lamar’s classic albums. She’s also got a short tour coming soon; you can find the dates for that here.

Radiohead Just Unexpectedly Released A New Live Album Sourced From The 2000s

A rumor popped up earlier this year that Radiohead was gearing up to reunite for a tour. It remains to be seen how true that is, but the group just did give something to fans of their live performances: Today (August 13), they released Hail To The Thief Live Recordings 2003-2009. It’s out digitally now, with a physical release to follow on October 31.

Thom Yorke says of the collection in a statement:

“In the process of thinking of how to build arrangements for the Shakespeare Hamlet/Hail To The Thief theatre production, I asked to hear some archive live recordings of the songs. I was shocked by the kind of energy behind the way we played. I barely recognised us, and it helped me find a way forward. We decided to get these live recordings mixed and released (it would have been insane to keep them for ourselves). It has all been a very cathartic process. We very much hope you enjoy them.”

Yaya Bey Keeps It In The Family As She Takes The ‘Sound Check’ Challenge

Brooklyn-bred R&B star Yaya Bey is the latest musician to take the Sound Check challenge, choosing her favorite songs from matchups between soul singers Erykah Badu and Frank Ocean, fellow Brooklynites Mos Def and Jay-Z, and breakout rappers BigXthaPlug and Doechii.

Here’s how it works: Jeremy plays two songs for the guest artist, who has to choose one and explain their choice, giving Jeremy a chance to learn their musical taste. Jeremy then has to guess the artist’s life anthem, the song they’d take to a desert island, which the guest wrote down earlier on a piece of paper. Our production team has also given him a decoy song, and Jeremy has to guess which is correct based on what he’s learned in the previous rounds.

Of one of her choices, Yaya says, “Erykah is an influence on everybody, whether it’s a little bit or a lotta bit.” She also has to “keep it in the family,” picking between two of her father Grand Daddy I.U.’s Golden Era classics. As she explains, her choice is a sentimental one, given her closeness to the late Juice Crew rap pioneer.

Watch Yaya Bey take on the Sound Check challenge above. New episodes of Sound Check drop every Wednesday at noon ET/9 a.m. PT on Uproxx’s YouTube.

BigXthaPlug’s Wide-Ranging ‘I Hope You’re Happy’ Tracklist Features Darius Rucker, Jelly Roll, And Luke Combs

For the past few weeks, Texas rapper BigXthaPlug has been rolling out his country-inspired new album, I Hope You’re Happy. After sharing collaborations with Shaboozey and Ella Langley, Mr. thaPlug revealed that there are plenty more to come, posting the tracklist on Instagram.

In addition to the aforementioned singles, features on the album will include such country mainstays as Darius Rucker, Luke Combs, and Thomas Rhett, along with rising stars of the genre such as Bailey Zimmerman, Jelly Roll, and Tucker Wetmore. Fellow country genre-bender Ink and Ella Langley offer some gender balance, and the whole collection clocks in at a tidy nine songs (with two interludes).

Although the album features country collabs galore, BigX hesitates to call it a country album, or himself a country artist. In an interview with Billboard, he clarified, “I wouldn’t say my version of country music is country music. It’s kind of mixing the two sounds. I’m rapping on a bunch of country-style beats, but it’s not just country. I’m not on there sounding like no cowboy; I’m rapping. I’m just doing it from a country standpoint. I’m not saying it was easy — it definitely was a challenge.”

See below for the full tracklist.

Chappell Roan Has ‘No Idea What The Next Era Is’ For Her Music

In March, Chappell Roan declared that her next album probably isn’t coming any time soon, and she reiterated that point earlier this month. To really drive it home, she also just said that she doesn’t even really know what the album is going to be like.

In a new interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Roan said:

“I think it’s a good ring on the ladder. Midwest Princess is her, but even though this next era, I don’t really know what it is, but ‘Subway’ is a very safe segue to it. But I just think that ‘The Giver,’ ‘Good Luck, Babe,’ ‘The Subway,’ they’re all kind of so different, so that’s why I’m just like, ‘I have no idea what the next era is.’ That’s the scary part of putting out new music and then people not liking it, because it’s not like the music you made before, and so it makes you scared to release stuff. Because you’re like, ‘Well, people aren’t ever going to like it as much as the first one’ and that’s the risk you take every single time.”

She also discussed her ideal songwriting routine, saying, “I’m waking up in the same bed, eating the same food in the morning time. Being in the same city, wearing the same [clothes], wearing my slippers. Just very basic. That’s just not a thing right now and it hasn’t been for a very long time. Because since I lived in Altadena and got displaced from the fires and have been living in Airbnbs for seven months, and I finally got a new place and I’ve only been there for 10 days. And then I came on this big tour. So it’s been a journey on, ‘How do I release music within the state of everything?’”

Tyler, The Creator Makes His Film Acting Debut With Timothée Chalamet In The ‘Marty Supreme’ Trailer

Tyler, The Creator has been a paragon of creativity in his career, going from rapping and producing to designing clothes and creating TV shows. But nearly 15 years after his debut, there’s one arena he’d had yet to step into: acting in films.

That changes this Christmas, as Tyler makes his film acting debut alongside Timothée Chalamet in Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, which is VERY loosely based on table tennis icon Marty Reisman. A24 dropped the trailer for the film today, giving us our first glimpse of the film’s cast and plot set to Alphaville’s “Forever Young,” as well as Tyler (billed here by his real name, Tyler Okonma) in his first major role.

The film is described as a sports adventure comedy-drama, following Chalamet’s Marty Mauser as he works to become a star table tennis player. Hijinks ensue, including some that seem wildly out-of-place for this kind of story, but hey, it’s a Safdie movie. You sort of have to expect things to go a little off the rails. Tyler appears to be one of Marty’s rival players, but there’s also a bit where they share some smiles. The film also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, and Kevin O’Leary.

Tyler’s good buddy, ASAP Rocky, is also making his own forays into film this year, facing off with Denzel Washington in Highest 2 Lowest, out this Friday. You can watch the trailer for Marty Supreme above.
