Dr. Teeth And The Electric Mayhem — The All-Muppet Band — Are Officially Billboard-Charting Artists

If the Muppets are the Beatles, then Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem are Wings. Don’t think about this too hard. Just accept it, because vocalist Dr. Teeth, drummer Animal, guitarist Janice, bassist Floyd Pepper, guitarist Janice, trumpeter Lips, and saxophonist Zoot have made it to the Billboard charts. And it only took nearly 50 years!

The Muppets Mayhem: Music From the Disney+ Original Series, a companion album to Disney+’s Muppets Mayhem, debuted at #13 on the Kid Albums chart. “The 22-track set includes 17 songs credited to Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, plus five scores by Mick Giacchino,” according to Billboard. “While some songs are original compositions for the series, others are covers of classics by The Beach Boys, Cyndi Lauper, Simon & Garfunkel, and more.”

Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem isn’t the first Muppets-related project to reach the charts — “Rubber Duckie” peaked at #16 on the Hot 100, while “Rainbow Connection” reached a high of #25 — but I’ll take Animal drumming to Kiss over Ernie singing about his dang bath toy any day of the week. Put down the duckie, indeed.

Other albums currently in the Kids Albums top 20 include Bluey: Dance Mode!; the soundtracks for Encanto, The Lion King, and Moana; and A Charlie Brown Christmas, despite it being, y’know, May.

All The Best New R&B From This Week That You Need To Hear

Sometimes the best new R&B can be hard to find, but there are plenty of great rhythm-and-blues tunes to get into if you have the time to sift through the hundreds of newly released songs every week. So that R&B heads can focus on listening to what they really love in its true form, we’ll be offering a digest of the best new R&B songs that fans of the genre should hear every Friday.

Since the last update of this weekly R&B and Afrobeats column, we’ve received plenty of music and news from the genre’s artists.

Beyoncé launched her Renaissance Tour in Europe and SZA got honest about her albums. Janelle Monáe took one step closer to her upcoming The Age Of Pleasure album with “Lipstick Lover” and Jorja Smith did the same for her upcoming album with her new single “Little Things.” Elsewhere, The Weeknd wants to kill The Weeknd (his alter ego, that is), Ginuwine had a viral fall at the Lovers & Friends Festival (he’s okay), and

Here are some more releases on the new music front that you should check out:

Victoria Monét — “Party Girls” Feat. Buju Banton

Victoria Monét is here to claim the summer with her upcoming Jaguar II project and her latest single “Party Girls” with Buju Banton is proof of that. It’s a sultry combination of fun, passion, and sexy; things that make Monét the one-of-a-kind artist she is.

Kiana Ledé — “Deeper”

It’s been three long years, but Kiana Ledé will finally release her second album Grudges on June 16. The latest offering from that is “Deeper,” which strikes as a soaring that presents Ledé as a girl who craves passion in more ways than one. In all ways, she wants it to the fullest extent.

Keke Palmer — Big Boss

It’s been a little over 15 years since Keke Palmer dropped her debut album So Uncool, but after an acting career that reached new heights in that decade and a half of time, Palmer is back to the music. She checks back in with her sophomore album Big Boss which lands with ten songs and a full film attached.

Mario — “Like Her Too” Feat. Sabrina Claudio

Mario closed his 2022 year with the release of his single “Like Her Too” and now, he revisits the single with a new verse from Sabrina Claudio. The remix provides a new perspective to the sultry track while also improving it as Mario and Sabrina’s voices together make for an enchanting combo.

Layton Greene — “Spin Again”

After her 2019 EP Tell Ya Story, the East St. Louis, Illinois singer Layton Greene sought to launch the campaign for her debut album with 2020’s “Chosen One.” Fast forward to today and we’ve yet to get that album, but we have taken another step forward with her new single “Spin Again.” The emotional ballad admits to falling back to a lover because of their intimate connection.

Njomza — Stages

Two years removed from Limbo, Njomza is back with her best project with Stages. Its seven songs reach higher and provide just the right energy for the impending summer months of fun. Whether it’s a pumping party in the daytime, one at night, or a freeing drive in the sun, Njomza’s project has the soundtrack.

Josh Levi — Disc Two (Scratched Up)

A little over a year after Josh Levi released his sophomore EP Disc Two, the singer returns with an expanded edition of the project. Disc Two (Scratched Up) comes attached with three new songs including the braggadocious “Ego.”

Col3trane — “Queen’s Disease”

Col3trane is always hard at work and just a year after the release of Lush Life, the singer is back with a new single. “Queen’s Disease” is his latest offering and it’s a record that speaks about a partner who can’t seem to decide what they want and need in love.

Emotional Oranges & Nonso Amadi — “Not Worthy”

You can sure as hell bet that Emotional Oranges has a new project on the way, and their new single with Nonso Amadi brings more excitement to that body of work. This a record that’s perfect for the summer whether it plays under the sun at a city day party or by the coast for some time at the beach.

Tyla — “Girl Next Door” Feat. Ayra Starr

South African singer Tyla had been making waves for quite some time now and she’s only going to bring more attention to herself with her latest single “Girl Next Door.” The track features star Nigerian singer Ayra Starr as they sing about wanting their partners to stay focused on them and not let their eyes wander.

Devvon Terrell — “Single Friends”

For his second single of the year, Devvon Terrell is back with the fun and flirtatious “Single Friends.” The singer sees the potential for a relationship with a friend in his life, so he lays all his cards down to make a proposal that might just be too sweet to deny.

Boy Spyce — “Relationship”

Rising Mavins Records singer Boy Spyce returns with “Relationship,” another record that is proof of the afrobeats singer’s big potential. Here, Spyce showcases his waning interest in a relationship as he’s seen enough to make him turn away from them.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Indie Mixtape 20: Alex Lahey’s ‘The Answer Is Always Yes’ Is Perfectly Tongue-In-Cheek

Life can be endlessly absurd. So it’s better to embrace the absurdity than to deny it. That’s exactly what indie rocker Alex Lahey is doing on her forthcoming album The Answer Is Always Yes, which drops Friday.

Coming off the success of her previous releases, The Best Of Luck Club and Love You Like A Brother, Lahey’s tour plans were put on hold thanks to the pandemic, so she had ample time to contemplate her life. “Living in a world that wasn’t made for you makes you pretty strong and adaptive, and you find the fun in it,” she says in a statement. “It also makes you realize how absurd everything is. With this record, I wanted to get weird because the world is weird, and it’s even weirder when you realize you don’t fit into it all the time.”

Throughout The Answer Is Always Yes, Lahey looks upon uncomfortable situations with humor. Her catchy number “Congratulations” is a tongue-in-cheek reaction to exes getting married in a short span of time, while “They Wouldn’t Let Me In” is a post-punk-leaning track dissects the politics of “coolness” and all the places she didn’t feel accepted as a teen discovering her queerness.

Ahead of the release of The Answer Is Always Yes, Alex Lahey talks surprise birthday parties, Limp Bizkit, and Fleetwood Mac-level TikTok fame in our latest Q&A.

What are four words you would use to describe your music?

Tongue in cheek core.

It’s 2050 and the world hasn’t ended and people are still listening to your music. How would you like it to be remembered?

Hopefully the teens of 2050 will make one of my songs go viral on whatever the TikTok of the 2050 is so I can have a cushy Fleetwood Mac level retirement.

What’s your favorite city in the world to perform?

I don’t know what I did to deserve this, but Minneapolis has never failed me.

Who’s the person who has most inspired your work, and why?

My old high school big band teacher, Mr Foley, inspired my attitude and approach to playing music with other people.

Where did you eat the best meal of your life?

I had a Ratatouille “life flashed before my eyes” moment when I first tasted the focaccia di recco at Chi Spacca in LA.

What album do you know every word to?

I listened to Young For Eternity by The Subways the other day for the first time in forever and couldn’t believe that I still knew every single word.

What was the best concert you’ve ever attended?

Paramore at Bonnaroo in 2018.

What is the best outfit for performing and why?

I mean, that’s up to the person performing, but my pro tip is a sports bra for ultimate support and avoiding grey because everyone will know you’re schvitzing.

Who’s your favorite person to follow on Twitter and/or Instagram?

I do love it when Ben Lee goes on a nostalgia kick on his Instagram.

What’s your most frequently played song in the van on tour?

“Break Stuff” by Limp Bizkit is omnipresent in the van.

What’s the last thing you Googled?

The train route from Heathrow to Shoreditch.

What album makes for the perfect gift?

One that means something to your relationship but isn’t too obvious. Play it coooooool.

Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever crashed while on tour?

In the loft of a mechanic’s garage in Brisbane where the only other tenant was a man with one leg.

What’s the story behind your first or favorite tattoo?

I feel like I’m the only touring musician on the planet who doesn’t have any tattoos.

What artists keep you from flipping the channel on the radio?

Currently it’s Alvvays, Bully, and Bonnie Raitt. What a holy trinity.

What’s the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you?

My mum and my partner threw me a surprise birthday party last year and I had NO idea it was coming and I was MOVED.

What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?

Life is long — let it take its time.

What’s the last show you went to?

I saw Mmeadows at Gold Diggers in LA and they were unreal.

What movie can you not resist watching when it’s on TV?

My gf roasts me for this all the time, but it’s Miss Congeniality.

What’s one of your hidden talents?

I can play the spoons.

When Does ‘Based On A True Story’ Come Out On Peacock?

The true crime streaming obsession is real for many people, and there has never been a more plentiful supply of dramatic reenactments based upon real-life than over the past few years. Kaley Cuoco has also never been more on fire than the past few years (Harley Quinn and The Flight Attendant, obvs), and she’s getting in on the gruesome game with a show that also has some fun with the fixation.

That would be Peacock’s upcoming Based on a True Story show. She portrays a woman who is so wrapped up in true crime narratives that she apparently gets hot and bothered at one point while thinking about the subject with her husband, portrayed by Chris Messina. The first eight-episode season of the series will be bingeable all at once on June 8.

Producers from The Boys and Ozark steer this twisted ship, so expect some mayhem. From the synopsis:

Based On A True Story follows a realtor, a former tennis star and a plumber who seize a unique opportunity to capitalize on America’s obsession with true crime. Emmy Award nominee Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant) stars as ‘Ava Bartlett,’ alongside Chris Messina (Air) and Tom Bateman (Thirteen Lives) in your next obsession.

Based On A True Story arrives on June 8.

After A Five-Year Break, The National Is Finally Bringing The Hometown Festival Back Later This Year

In 2018, should-be Rock Hall members The National launched Homecoming Festival, their own event in Cincinnati, Ohio. Of that installment, Uproxx’s Steven Hyden wrote, “Homecoming is the latest example of what’s become a burgeoning trend of artist-curated festivals. Similar to Justin Vernon’s Eaux Claires, […] Homecoming is an artisanal alternative to big-time corporate festivals, with their interchangeable lineups and increasingly impersonal experiences. A festival like Homecoming, meanwhile, feels smaller, more livable (especially when it comes to lines for drinks and bathrooms), and driven by the personalities of the participating artists.”

The band has yet to revive the event since then, but now they’re finally ready to: Homecoming is returning to Cincinnati this fall, on September 15 and 16.

Aside from The National themselves, the lineup also features Patti Smith And Her Band, Pavement, The Walkmen, Weyes Blood, Arooj Aftab, Snail Mail, Bartees Strange, Julia Jacklin, The Drin, Carriers, Leo Pastel, and Ballard.

The National said in a statement, “When we launched Homecoming in 2018, we were overwhelmed by the response from the community and by our renewed sense of connection to our hometown. It was such an exciting, memorable weekend and we’ve long hoped to bring it back. We’re honored to return to Cincinnati five years later and be joined by so many of our favorite musicians and friends.”

Tickets go on sale on May 19 at 10 a.m. ET. Find more information here.

Cardi B Shows Off The Beats By Dre Studio Buds As Only She Can In An Ear-Catching New Ad

Cardi B shows off the new Beats By Dre Studio Buds+ as only she can in an ear-catching ad. As the Bronx rap star’s hit single “Up” plays in the background, Cardi helps demonstrate the new earbuds’ improved characteristics: clearer calls (“Yeah, girl, she gone go broke trying to keep up with me!”), better noise canceling (“Y’all ain’t got no more ginger ale?”), and more powerful sound.

The Studio Buds+ will come in three colors — Black, Ivory, and Transparent — and boast improvements to many of fans’ favorite features like Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency modes, as well as up to 36 hours of battery. They’re available to order starting today for $169.99.

While part of the appeal of booking Cardi for your campaign is getting that signature authenticity, fans will be hoping that at least one part of the commercial — the part where she’s in the studio — is truer than the rest. We already know she’s great at talking trash and that she knows how to fill up a space with her boisterous personality, but with her debut album four-plus years in the rearview, what fans really want to know is when her next album is coming out.

Fortunately, she really has been in the studio, and she promised that her new album is “coming soon” on Instagram. In the meantime, it looks like she’s maintaining her reputation as one of the most marketable artists in the business. You can watch Cardi’s Beats By Dre commercial above.

A 76-Year-Old Michigan Man Has Been Charged With The Theft Of Judy Garland’s Ruby Red Slippers From ‘The Wizard Of Oz’

In 2005, a pair of ruby red slippers worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz went missing, prompting a 13-year search for the iconic piece of film history. The famous footwear was stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Michigan, and sure enough, that’s where the alleged culprit has reportedly been found.

Terry Martin, a 76-year-old man who lives 12 miles from the museum, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for the theft of the missing slippers. However, little information has been provided on how Martin was identified as the main suspect.

Via Star Tribune:

The one-page indictment offered no clues about how the theft was carried out or how the FBI determined that Martin was responsible.

Reached by phone Wednesday at his home, Martin told the Star Tribune, “I gotta go on trial. I don’t want to talk to you.”

At the time of theft, the slippers were insured for $1 million, but current fair market appraisal values the slippers at $3.5 million, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in North Dakota said in a statement announcing the indictment.

After years of false leads, the ruby red slippers were recovered during a 2018 sting operation that relied on tipsters in both Michigan and Florida. Little information was provided then, either, but the feds said they were looking at a suspect.

While the FBI showed off the iconic slippers during a press conference confirming they’ve been found, the pieces of Hollywood history have yet to be publicly displayed since the heist.

‘Ted Lasso’ Power Rankings: Colorful New Shirts For Some, Food Fights For Others

The Ted Lasso Power Rankings are a weekly analysis of who and/or what had the strongest performance in each episode. Most of the list will feature individual characters, although the committee does reserve the right to honor anything from animals to inanimate objects to laws of nature to general concepts. There are very few rules here.

Season 3, Episode 10 — “International Break”

HONORABLE MENTION: Nate (the redemption tour continues apace but it’s tough to crack the top ten when you spent half an episode hiding under blankets); Sam (tough week for Sam but he’s a good man); Dani Rojas (did not enjoy Evil Dani); Jade (would pay good money to see her deal with airport staff on her trip); Higgins (spilled tea on his wiener, not ideal); Madeline Kahn (a treasure); Ted (terrible at gossip); tea (do not think I would enjoy having it spit in my face); Trent Crimm (got Beard to reveal his hometown, which is definitely going in the book); Rupert (DO NOT HUMANIZE RUPERT); Van Damme (made a save with his nose); Renee the Sewer Man (need to know everything about him); Dan (generally not good to have an internal ranking of bosses by hotness); Willy Wonka (should be in prison); Rupert’s new assistant Ms. Bread (MS. BREAD); David Hockney (a very talented little boy); Will Kitman (also a very talented little boy)

10. (tie) Keeley (LAST WEEK: Unranked)

TED
APPLE

Keeley:

  • Lost funding for her company
  • Cried about it
  • Continued being ghosted by Jack for a while
  • Got day-drunk about it
  • Got her funding back thanks to Rebecca, which was nice, as I assume having a billionaire friend is, in general
  • Hooked up with Roy again after he wrote an illegible note

Busy week for Keeley.

10. (tie) Mae (LAST WEEK: 4)

TED
APPLE

Mae has been running the bar for 40 years. She’s out here giving advice and pouring drinks and being everything you want out of a bartender. She knows that sad skinny girls passed out in her pub is bad for business. Mae fascinates me.

I know we only have a few episodes left and I know I make this point every week, but it would be really funny if the show devoted one of its final hours ever to a decade-spanning history of Mae and her little Richmond pub. I want to see a young Mae running hooligans out of the bar with a cricket bat. Older Mae, too. I’ll settle for a five-minute montage, but it better be set to something rowdy. Dropkick Murphys, maybe. Let’s all sleep on it.

9. “Red Right Hand” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (LAST WEEK: Unranked)

Two things going on here, both true…

THING NUMBER ONE: This song has been massively overused in shows and movies for a scene where a dark and mysterious figure enters a room or town or whatever, thanks mostly to Peaky Blinders using it as the opening credits music, which usually features one or more cigarette-puffing dudes in long black coats striding straight toward the camera, usually in slow motion.

THING NUMBER TWO: It’s been overused because it’s a perfect song for that exact situation and I did enjoy them twisting it a bit for Roy and his loud tie-dye shirt.

I’m gonna play it in my car really loud when I pull into the supermarket parking lot this weekend. Just so people know. And then I’m going to spend like $30 on ice cream and junk food and ruin my new tough image. But I’ll have ice cream and junk food then. A fair trade.

8. Barbara the CFO (LAST WEEK: Unranked)

TED
APPLE

She’s a sweet woman. Don’t let her trick you into thinking otherwise. I hope she and Keeley start going to happy hour at Mae’s together. I hope she starts dating… oh, let’s say Dani Rojas. I would like to see that conversation over dinner. Dani would love her snow globe collection.

7. Sam Richardson (LAST WEEK: Unranked)

TED
APPLE

Some notes here:

  • I love whenever Sam Richardson shows up to play Edwin because I love Sam Richardson and I enjoy getting to see him play a villain for once
  • The man is just absurdly talented, and please go back and watch his accent work in the scene where he revealed that he booked all the fake reservations at Sam’s restaurant himself, which is funny because the character is a billionaire and could have easily paid people to do it if he wasn’t having so much fun
  • Yet another reminder that Ted Lasso opened up a weird little wormhole the other week where the show Ted Lasso might exist inside the universe of Ted Lasso, which remains very funny to me

I wish I had seen that food fight at the end.

6. Roy (LAST WEEK: 2)

TED
APPLE

Roy wears colorful shirts now. It’s fine. Sometimes he rips them off and spikes them down on a parking lot and drives off topless but then he doubles back to get them. That’s fine, too. There’s growth happening here. Slow growth, yes, of course. But growth. And he finally, at long last, with the help of a foul-mouthed school teacher who was flirting poorly with him, realized the mistake he made with Keeley. I don’t know if they’re back together for real but they are definitely bonking a little, which is nice for both of them after this little run of despair. Full-on rom-com hours over there. Good for Roy.

5. Getting a little day-drunk every now and then (LAST WEEK: Unranked)

TED
APPLE

There are drawbacks to this, of course. It’s never fun when the buzz starts wearing off at like 4pm and you’re faced with the “go take a nap and screw up your sleep for the night” vs. “continue drinking and risk a night of terrible decisions” conundrum. And I do not really recommend getting wrecked alone at a bar while the sun is out because you are sad about something. That’s not great.

But still. Once in a while, maybe on one of the first Sunny Saturdays of the spring, maybe if you round up a few friends and find a little place with tables outside or a beach bar or a fun little section of town with bars and shops and stuff, it can be a good time. Keep it under control, though. A few drinks. You don’t wanna be the sloppy mess bumbling around a busy sidewalk while people are going about their day.

There’s a fine line with day-drinking. I trust you all to dance it responsibly.

4. Jamie Tartt (LAST WEEK: Unranked)

TED
APPLE

Jamie:

  • Is Roy’s best friend now
  • Has really great hair this season
  • Wore 24 in his first match with the national team as a shoutout to Sam getting snubbed from the Nigerian team for bribe-related reasons, which was really just a very sweet and cute thing to do, especially for Jamie

Good for Jamie.

3. Rebecca (LAST WEEK: 5)

TED
APPLE

Rebecca’s big speech at the end was equal parts wonderful and unrealistic, a stirring come-to-Jesus moment for a group of billionaires that I do not for one second believe would ever happen. Good for her, though. And good for her for funding Keeley’s business, even if, like, she could have been doing that from the start, apparently? I don’t know. But extra super good for her for rejecting Rupert’s little smoochy face. Rebecca is a good egg.

Two notes in closing:

  • The strategy of picturing scary people as little children is actually a very good one and something I plan to do if I ever get, like, audited or sued, as long as I can keep myself from saying “ awwww you’re just a wittle guy” to a high-powered attorney
  • There was a really good thing in here — advice from Higgins, who still remained unranked mostly because I had to dock all those points for spilling hot tea on his crotch — about how the reason you’re invited into a powerful room (in this case, her being a woman and adding a splash of diversity) is less important than the fact that you’re in the room at all, and to take advantage of the opportunity regardless of why you got it

But mostly, I really must insist that you do not audit or sue me.

2. Phoebe (LAST WEEK: Unranked)

TED
APPLE

Charging Roy and his friends one pound per cuss is going to make her a millionaire by age 16. I want to see her pull up to school in a chauffeured Rolls-Royce she paid for entirely with her swear jar. She’s a brilliant businesswoman. She might end up buying Richmond from Rebecca someday.

1. Coach Beard (LAST WEEK: 7)
