Construction workers take time out of their day to let a toddler be part of the job

There are many reasons why toddlers are fascinated by construction workers and their equipment. The loud noises, flashing lights, and sheer size of these machines can be both exciting and intimidating, which creates a sense of wonder and curiosity.

Construction toys also offer a type of play that is easy for kids to understand. Toy construction trucks do simple things; they dig, transport sand and roll around on wheels. They also give kids a sense of power and control, which is alluring and comforting to them.

“Little ones love big trucks like diggers because to a preschooler, those trucks seem larger than life,” Crystal Paschal, early childhood educator and founder of the website Feminist Books for Kids, told Romper. “They are real machines that do the work of superheroes. Diggers, bulldozers and cranes stimulate their imaginations and allow them to picture themselves controlling something big and powerful.”

The tremendous feeling that young children get when seeing construction workers in action is a big reason why so many people have fallen in love with a video posted to TikTok by a user named @iwishicouldsleep.

Since it was posted on April 6, it has received over 16.5 million views.

@iwishicouldsleep

Literally tell me youve seen something cuter. I cant stop sending this to people ☺️☺️

In the video, a giddy young boy and his guardian watch an excavator and crew of workers from a safe distance as they dig up a suburban street. The boy and his guardian placed a toy dump truck between the workers and themselves and the difference in size is a unique juxtaposition of a child’s fantasy world with that of working adults. Then, the long arm of the excavator dumps some sand into the back of the boy’s truck, and for the toddler, the scene is pure bliss.

It’s a sweet moment and a testament to the worker’s skill that they could drop the dirt on such a tiny target.

People on TikTok couldn’t get enough of the wholesome video.

“Wonderful gesture that the child will never forget, great job dude,” Gary wrote. “Also, let’s applaud the finesse of that operator! This is awesome,” Mibbecakes added.

“Why did I just start crying?! This is so pure,” Juliana wrote.

The touching moment wasn’t just great for the child; it had to be moving for the construction workers, too. They have to take pride in the fact that their work can bring people such joy. “Every one of those workers’ spirits were lifted up by that. Not to mention the child and his mother’s!” wrote Kellymanfredibl25.

In another video posted on April 17, the construction workers got to hang out and take a photo with the little boy. For the occasion, he put on a construction helmet and vest and posed with his dump truck. It was even more special because it was his third birthday.

“They all wanted to meet the star today!! Big man turned 3,” iwishicouldsleep wrote.

@iwishicouldsleep

They all wanted to meet the star today!! Big man turned 3 🥹

The video is a great way of reminding people that some of the simplest gestures can give a young kid (or a big one!) a memory of a lifetime. Sometimes all it takes is just a few minutes.

91-year-old calculus teacher connects with students using tried and true old-school methods

There are some people who work well beyond retirement simply because they enjoy working. While many people look forward to retiring, not everyone is content sitting at home or spending much time traveling around the world. In fact, my own grandfather was one of those people who worked beyond retirement, ran five miles a day and boxed until he was well into his 70s.

But Lou Kokonis has surpassed people working into their 70s and even 80s. Kokonis is 91 and still working at the same high school in Virginia that he’s been teaching at since 1959. We’re not talking about coming in for an hour or so a day to teach a class and then going home to nap. The math teacher has a full class load, rolling in every morning before most other teachers arrive and staying up into the night to grade assignments.

Kokonis is the real deal, and while his handwriting may be a little shakier, his mind is still as sharp as ever. What’s even more remarkable than his continuing to work into his 90s is the fact that he’s able to build genuine connections with his students regardless of the multigenerational age gap.

Mr. Kokonis told CBS Mornings that he believes he is able to reach his students because he still offers free Saturday tutoring just like he always did. Turns out, his early arrivals and work on Saturdays are what helps keeps his students engaged, though he admitted cell phones are a challenge.

Of course, in the late 1950s, he didn’t have to compete with cell phones or learn to use computers or Promethean boards, but then again, we also didn’t have 50 states. In his 60-plus years of teaching, he has been a witness to ever-advancing technology in the classroom firsthand.

“To be working and teaching this long and to still like put in all this extra effort on Saturdays, I really admire that about him,” Mohamed Eltireke, a student at the high school, told CBS Mornings.

At a time when there’s a national teacher shortage, Mr. Kokonis is filling a vital role, and while one of the students he taught has already become a teacher and retired himself, Kokonis has no plans to do the same. He plans to finish out the year and says, “My mind is set that I’m going to do well this year and I’m going to enjoy it, and I’m going to try to come next year if they’ll take me.”

Wrinkle the Duck goes to PetSmart, tries on cute outfits, makes new friends and spreads joy

So, a man and a duck walk into a PetSmart…

No, this isn’t the beginning of a joke, although this story is plenty funny.

Wrinkle the Duck already captured the hearts of millions (including ours) back in 2021 when she ran the New York City Marathon. A clip showing her speed-waddling along in her wee little duck shoes was borderline too pure for this world.

Well friends, there’s even more adorable content where that came from. Wrinkle goes on all kinds of adventures with her owner, who graciously shares them online to make the internet a better place.

Recently, Wrinkle took a trip to PetSmart. Unsurprisingly, delightful moments ensued.

The full video is a little over 18 minutes of non-stop cuteness. After all, who wouldn’t want to see Wrinkle try on tiny outfits, fist bump employees with her beak, say hi to other pets in the shop (who her owner refers to as “inmates”) or enjoy not 5, not 7, but 9 sippys from her sippy cup?

However, if you’re pressed for time, the must-watch moment happens at 5:30 when Wrinkle finds out that she’s put on some weight. I for one didn’t know ducks could be aghast.

Watch:

“Wrinkle…we’re gonna have to start running again,” her owner playfully laments. Perhaps she’ll be preparing for her next marathon very very soon.

All in all, the trip was a success. Wrinkle waddled out of PetSmart having made new friends and with a new hoodie to boot. And she made plenty of people happy in the process, including the 700,000 who watched the video on Youtube.

“Her little waddle with the clothes on melted my soul,” one person wrote in the comments.

Another shared that “every time I’m sad or I’m suffering, Wrinkle is here to make my day better than usual with her walking and her kissing.”

Without a doubt, Wrinkle is pure joy personified. Or in this case…duckified.

Follow along on more adorable adventures with everybody’s favorite waterfowl on TikTok and YouTube.

Mom writes note to daughter’s teacher, admitting she skipped class just to see Taylor Swift

People are praising Karen Vladeck, 38, a mom from Austin, Texas, who wrote a clever email notifying her daughter’s teacher that she would be missing school to attend a Taylor Swift concert. However, instead of a simple letter asking for the absence to be excused, she channeled her inner Swiftie and composed a note infused with nods to the singer’s music catalog.

The absence was for April 24, which coincided with the final date of Swift’s 3-night stand at Houston’s NRG stadium. Vladek sent the letter on April 4, so the teacher would have plenty of notice.

Vladek, a legal recruiter, attorney and podcaster, shared the witty email she sent to her daughter’s teacher on Twitter, which received nearly 3,800 likes. “Here’s hoping my daughter’s 1st grade teacher is a Swiftie,” she captioned the tweet.

She titled the email: “It’s Me, Hi, I’m the Problem, It’s Me,” a nod to Swift’s song “Anti-Hero.”

The email begins with “Dear Reader [Ms. Parks],” referencing another song on Swift’s “Midnights” album. It went on to include numerous Swiftisms, including “Should Have Said No,” “So It Goes…,” “Bad Blood,” “I Did Something Bad,” “The Last Time,” “Cruel Summer” and “Forever & Always.”

“Dear Reader [Ms. Parks], I’m writing to let you know that Maddie won’t be in school on 4/24 because she is going to the Taylor Swift concert in Houston,” Vladeck wrote. “I hope missing school doesn’t ruin her otherwise stellar Reputation, but she begged me to go and maybe I Should Have Said No but I didn’t want to be Mean. So It Goes…Anyway, I hope this doesn’t leave any Bad Blood between you and Maddie and that things for the rest of the year are not Treacherous.

“I know I Did Something Bad and I promise this will be The Last Time she has an unexcused absence before the Cruel Summer starts. Forever & Always, -Karen Vladeck.”

Vladek’s husband, Steve, didn’t seem too thrilled about the email.

The mother could have made up a story that her daughter was sick or that there was some family emergency. But she was honest, admitting that having Taylor Swift tickets was an acceptable excuse for missing a day of school. Who’s to blame her? The Eras Tour is such a major pop culture event that the average ticket price is $700; Swift may become a billionaire when it’s all said and done.

Plus, it would have been hard for her daughter to return to school and not tell everyone on the playground that she got to see Swift.

The mother’s note got a lot of praise on social media from fellow parents and Swifties.

Some teachers said that Maddie’s absence was completely acceptable.

Swift fans shared some more references she could have included in the letter.

A World Series parade is a great reason to take a day off from school, too.

The good news is that Ms. Parks was totally fine with the reason for the absence. She responded to the email, saying, “THIS MADE MY ENTIRE DAY.” Way to go, Ms. Parks.

Grandma’s infectious laughter at her wild new hair color has the internet in love

If you are needing a masterclass in loving life, proof that childlike joy can be had at any age or simply a reason to smile today…look no further. Betty Mae Jinright has you covered.

Betty Mae has lit up social media after her granddaughter and hairstylist, Kourtnee Jinright, filmed herself dying Grandma’s hair in some pretty outrageous colors. People simply can’t get enough of Betty Mae’s infectious squeal of laughter that comes with each new shade.

“This [color] is called acid spill,” Kourtnee Jinright says at the top of the clip while plopping the brightest, most neon shade of green you’ve ever seen right onto her grandmother’s sweet ol’ noggin.

“I’m so glad to know that,” Betty Mae quips, before going into a fit of giggles as soon as she sees the green dye hit her pearly white strands.

Kourtnee continues splashing on various vibrant shades of purple, blue and red. With each brush stroke, Betty Mae’s laughter escalates.

Honestly, it’s like she’s riding the best roller coaster of her life. And thanks to the now-viral clip, we’re along for the ride.

Watch:

What made Betty Mae choose to get her hair colored in the first place, you ask? Why, the chance to support her granddaughter, of course.

Kourtnee told “Good Morning America” that she had entered a contest for the hair color brand Pulp Riot, focused specifically on their Wild Ride line of hair colors. Entrants were encouraged to create their “boldest, brightest looks” using Wild Ride for a chance to win a trip to Los Angeles and meet the Pulp Riot team, plus film a transformation video.

When Kourtnee asked Betty Mae to “be her guinea pig,” there was no hesitation.

“My grandmother would do anything for her grandbabies to help them out in their career,” Kourtnee told GMA.

So far, Kourtnee’s video, which she posted to Instagram, has been liked over a million times, with people absolutely gushing over her grandma.

“Absolutely love this, Holy cow! 🤣 biggest smile on my face the entire time, laughing right along with her,” one person wrote.

“She is the CUTEST!!!! Really made me miss my grandma’s love that you can create such special memories with her,” another added.

Betty Mae’s instant popularity came as no surprise to Kourtnee, who told GMA that “all of the people in my life are obsessed with her and I knew the whole world would be too. At this point, she’s everyone’s grandma.”

A grandma we are so lucky to have. Thanks, Betty Mae, for brightening up the internet. Glad to see you have a hairdo now as colorful as you are.

Sunny Hostin Has Outed Whoopi Goldberg As ‘The View’s Phantom Fart Dropper

Sunny Hostin stopped by Watch What Happens Live on Thursday night where The View co-host finally revealed who’s behind the mysterious fart sounds that have plagued the daytime talk show over the years. While chatting with Andy Cohen and fielding questions about her co-workers, Hostin was asked who “passes gas the most on set.” Unlike her other answers, Hostin didn’t even hesitate to the throw the main culprit under the bus.

Whoopi!” Hostin immediately said. Despite outing her as the phantom farter, Hostin had nothing but nice things to say about Goldberg during the interview.

Via Entertainment Weekly:

Hostin then revealed that, among the group, she hates mornings the most, and that Oscar-winning moderator Whoopi Goldberg is the most generous gift-giver as well as the one she disagrees with the most — but she is also the likeliest to pick up a check when the women go out to dinner.

Cohen also asked Hostin about former co-host Meghan McCain, who’s gone on to frequently trash her old workplace, which she recently claimed “keeps getting worse.”

“Our show is a wonderful place,” Hostin said via The Daily Beast before admitting she’s surprised by McCain’s attacks because “Meg and I have always been friendly.” Hostin then suggested Cohen should cast McCain on The Real Housewives of the Potomac before putting a curt end to the topic.

“I wish her well,” Hostin said. “God bless.”

We Somehow Have A New Story About Jimmy Butler’s Infamous Timberwolves Practice

One of the most well-known practices in NBA history happened back in 2018. Jimmy Butler, who had requested a trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves, showed up after spending several weeks away from the team and apparently beat the starters with a group of reserve players while challenging just about everyone in the building. Butler would then go sit down with Rachel Nichols of ESPN and basically brag about the entire thing.

The whole thing was pretty surreal, and not long after, Butler got a trade to the Philadelphia 76ers. And somehow, someway, we are still getting stories about what happened that day. During a recent episode of the Club 520 Podcast, one of Butler’s teammates from that Timberwolves squad, Jeff Teague, added a new detail about how far Butler went to get his point across. Head to the 5:39 mark of the below video for the whole thing.

Teague explained what we already knew: Butler didn’t show up to any practices in the offseason, the team was going through training camp, and then, he showed up three days into camp, much to the delight of then-Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau. While the entire team was getting warmed up, Butler was off to the side stretching. And then, Thibodeau called for a scrimmage, which made Butler jump up and scream “I’m playing.”

Thibodeau tried to put Butler with the starters, but he said he wouldn’t play with those guys, instead opting to play with players who weren’t going to make the team so he could guard Karl-Anthony Towns. Butler, of course, dominates the game.

“Time runs out, they win, they beat us, like, 18-6,” Teague said. “And Jimmy’s going crazy — ‘Y’all think that team can win without me? I’m him! Pay me! Pay me!’ Mind you, he ain’t took off his Jordan warm-up yet. He finally takes it off, he’s got the Timberwolves shirt on, but he cut the Minnesota out of it, so it’s just chest. He cut the Minnesota out his shorts, it’s just shorts. He out here with a hole in the middle of his shirt, in the middle of his leg.”

Teague apparently laughed so hard that he cried, right up until he started getting mad that Butler said the starters couldn’t win without him, which was a slight against Teague. Butler’s team then beat the second unit while the starters were on the sideline, and after the game, Butler ran into the locker room. The starters then took it to the second unit in the next game.

“We beat ’em, we all run in the locker room like, ‘Jimmy, bring your ass back out! We wanna play again!’” Teague recalled. “Jimmy gone. Jimmy at home.”

The team went through practice, showered, and saw Butler’s interview with Nichols. And in Teague’s eyes, all of this is “one of the most iconic moments I’ve ever been a part of in basketball.”

Usher Explained His Harry Belafonte Tattoo While Mourning His Recent Passing

Harry Belafonte died on Tuesday, April 25. The 96-year-old civil rights, acting, and music icon passed at his Upper West Side residence in New York from congestive heart failure, his longtime spokesperson, Ken Sunshine, confirmed to The New York Times. Everyone from former President Barack Obama and President Joe Biden to Questlove and Usher publicly mourned the loss.

Usher took to Instagram and explained why he has a portrait of Belafonte tattooed on his forearm. The three-photo carousel includes one of Belafonte smiling at the ink in presumed approval.

“‘A world-renowned entertainer. A barrier-breaking actor. A tireless activist. A one-of-a-kind friend. Inspired is the word that comes to mind when I think about you Harry,” Usher wrote in his caption. “A man of great strength, courage, and sense of purpose. All things that I view as admirable. When I spent time with you… I was in awe of how your presence was so powerful. You’ve been called home after many, many years of gracing this world with your amazing spirit and incomparable gifts.”

He continued, “However, your impact on the world will be forever present. I’m grateful to have been blessed with the opportunity to have you in my life and I will miss you. May you rest peacefully knowing the legacy you’ve left behind.’ Your passion awakened our souls. The impression you made on my heart is why I wear you on my skin.”

Usher added “Forever Missed,” four dove emojis, and “I love you Harry ‘Mr. B,’” and finished the caption with a Belafonte quote: “Artists are the gatekeepers are truth; We are civilization’s anchor. We are the compass for humanity’s conscience.”

Steven Hyden’s Favorite Music Of April 2023

Every month, Uproxx cultural critic Steven Hyden makes an unranked list of his favorite music-related items released during this period — songs, albums, books, films, you name it.

1. Wednesday, Rat Saw God

On the previous Wednesday LP, 2021’s Twin Plagues, singer-songwriter Karly Hartzman wrote evocative story songs set in what I like to call the Gummo South, a partly real and partly made-up region in which dead dogs and burned-down Dairy Queens dot the landscape like Starbucks crowd street corners in big cities. But on Rat Saw God, her songwriting exhibits a level of detail that is practically physical. The title alone of the opening track, “Hot Rotten Grass Smell,” filled my nostrils with the aroma of a humid late July day. Tapping into that kind of visceral sense memory grants instant authenticity to the world that Hartzman creates on this record. The nail salons with the lights turned off, the sex shops off the highway with biblical names, the rundown houses with cocaine and guns hidden in the walls — you see, smell, feel, hear, and taste them all.

2. Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed

Directed by Sam Jones, who also made I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, this very good documentary debuted earlier this month on HBO and is similarly centered on the making of an album — Isbell’s 2020 effort Reunions — and how it reveals the fractures in a relationship between two creative people. In this case, it’s Isbell and his wife and bandmate Amanda Shires. It’s clear that they are having a rough time in their marriage, and the stresses of the creative process might be partly to blame. This the first music doc I’ve seen in a while where the subject doesn’t always come off in a good light. I think Isbell ultimately does come off well, just because his candor feels courageous, but Running With Our Eyes Closed definitely doesn’t feel like a commercial. There are scenes that made me cringe, usually when Amanda is being very blunt about her husband’s shortcomings. It’s the rare doc that almost seems too honest — I’m not sure that exposing the inner workings of your marriage to this degree is wise — but it is undeniably a riveting watch.

3. Bob Dylan, “Only A River” (Live in Nagoya, Japan on April 20, 2023)

I currently host a podcast about Bob Dylan’s Never Ending Tour, and I used to host a podcast about the Grateful Dead. So Bob Dylan covering a Bob Weir solo cut — from his lovely 2016 LP Blue Mountain — was a big deal in my world. Bob played a lot of Dead during his sojourn in Japan, also covering “Truckin’” and “Brokedown Palace.” But “Only A River” was the best and most surprising bust out. Shoutout to Donnie Herron, whose pedal steel licks here are transporting.

4. Kara Jackson, What Does The Earth Give Us People To Love?

This Chicago-based singer-songwriter has a legitimate literary pedigree — she was the National Youth Poet Laureate back in the late 2010s. That was before the release of her recent full-length debut, What Does The Earth Give Us People To Love?, a beguiling collection that melds Leonard Cohen with Alice Coltrane. A truly one-of-a-kind experience that feels like a world unto itself.

5. Superviolet, Infinite Spring

Following the sad dissolution of the Ohio emo band The Sidekicks, lead singer Steve Ciolek launched a new solo project that leans into his former band’s heartland rock sensibilities. His first album as Superviolet, Infinite Spring, has a canny pop sense that sounds like Bright Eyes crossed with early Shins.

6. The National, First Two Pages Of Frankenstein

When I first heard “Tropic Morning News” last summer, it felt like an instant-classic National song. And the album version — culled from a widely bootlegged performance in Hamburg — sticks the landing. The rhythm section glides with subtle virtuosity. The guitars lock in on a hypnotic pulse that slow-burns toward a satisfying peak in the outro. And Berninger delivers his patented blend of funny and distraught non sequiturs with pained panache. (Here’s a question for the band’s subreddit: Is the line about how “you can stop and start an athlete’s heart” an accidental Damar Hamlin reference?) The other highlights on Frankenstein — “Eucalyptus,” “New Order T-Shirt,” “Grease In Your Hair,” “Alien,” “Ice Machines” — don’t deliver the same emotional highs. But they do re-focus The National on their most essential attribute, which is the sound of these lifelong friends and brothers playing together with minimal extra baggage. As is the case with all great rock bands, the simplest approach — plug in, stand in a circle, block out the outside world — typically is the most winning. And on First Two Pages Of Frankenstein, The National have rediscovered this.

7. Country Westerns, Forgive The City

I spent a lot of time this month talking about the onset of backyard barbecue music season. And this album epitomizes the form. No matter their name or place of origin, this Nashville band doesn’t so much twang as sneer with some good old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll energy. Their music balances jangle and grit like some of the greatest of great American bands, like R.E.M. and the Replacements.
