‘The Simpsons’ Star Hank Azaria Was ‘Really Scared’ About ‘The Problem With Apu’ Documentary But Now He’s ‘Grateful’

Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, once of the most prominent non-Simpsons on The Simpsons, has been a background character since 2017. Hank Azaria stopped voicing the dad of eight following the release of The Problem with Apu, a documentary starring and written by Hari Kondabolu about Hollywood’s portrayal of South Asians. A new voice actor has not been cast.

Azaria, who is white, doesn’t appear in The Problem with Apu, a decision he now regrets (although not as much as The Simpsons should regret their crummy response to the controversy).

“I was afraid,” he admitted to Kondabolu on NPR’s Code Switch podcast. “I was really freaked out. You’re a comedian. And some of your stuff is ‘gotcha.’ It has bite to it, as it should. It’s hilarious and it makes good points. But being on the other end of that really scared me. At the time, I didn’t feel safe to have the conversation privately, let alone recorded.”

Azaria is “grateful” for Kondabolu “dragging and pushing” him into the conversation, though The documentarian and comedian replied, “It means a lot to hear you say that. I know you’ve told me privately the impact that I’ve made, but to hear that publicly is a really big deal to me because one of the things that frustrated me after the film came out is that I was getting death threats.”

Kondabolu continued:

“Initially it bothered me that you didn’t mention me because I had to deal with all this crap to get it there…There is a history of white folks talking about what they’ve learned and sharing the knowledge without giving credit to the people of color that actually got them there. Like, you put in the work and then you get never get credit for the work. And at the end of the day, I’m talking about this way more than I wanted to.

And I know it’s a different experience for both of us, because for you it’s opened up all these new ideas and you’ve grown in incredible ways and I can see your excitement about the work you’re doing now. To me, this was old hat when I made the documentary. So it’s the double whammy of being stuck here without also getting props. So for you to say it now does mean a lot.”

Here Is Why Ed Sheeran Is Being Sued By Marvin Gaye’s Estate

Ed Sheeran’s trial pertaining to the lawsuit from Marvin Gaye’s estate has started. For those who might not be aware of the situation, here’s why it’s causing some waves.

The copyright infringement lawsuit against Sheeran is over his 2014 song, “Thinking Out Loud,” which Gaye’s estate has claimed copies the late singer’s “Let’s Get It On.” It was officially filed by the family of the song’s co-writer and composer Ed Townsend.

It claims that Sheeran’s song used the same instrumental progressions and “repeated it continuously throughout ‘Thinking’ — this incontrovertible musical similarity has been observed by music industry professionals previously, as embodied by various social media and articles about the matter,” according to the filing.

“For far too long, Black artists have created, inspired and spread music all around the world,” the Townsend’s lawyer, Ben Crump, told CBS News. “Mr. Sheeran’s infringement of Black artists is merely another example of artists exploiting the genius and the work of Black singers and songwriters.”

Sheeran is also facing two other lawsuits tied to copyright infringement on the song — these filed by Structured Asset Sales, a company that holds a stake in “Let’s Get It On,” according to Vulture.

And, while most copyright lawsuits get dismissed, Gaye’s estate has a track record of being successful in past cases. They were awarded over $5 million in 2015, after claiming Robin Thicke and Pharrell’s “Blurred Lines” borrowed from “Got To Give It Up.”

‘Fatal Attraction’ Star Joshua Jackson Details Exactly Why (Some) Sex Scenes Are Of ‘Great Importance’

It would be tough to do a television remake of the ’80s thriller Fatal Attraction and not have a sex scene. In fact, that is basically half of the plot anyway. Without it, you’d just be left with the “fatal” part, and we already have too many shows about that. But even though some actors are shying away from the sex of it all, Joshua Jackson still thinks that it’s an integral part of filmmaking these days, as long as it’s done right.

“The sex scenes are of great importance” Jackson recently told Variety. “Because they’re furthering the narrative. You have to believe that these people want to f*ck each other.” In reality, sex scenes are logistically challenging, which kind of takes the spark out of it, according to Jackson. But yes, making it look like two actors actually wanna get it on might be challenging, to say the least.

Fatal Attraction used intimacy coordinators on-set for scenes between Jackson and his obsessive love interest Lizzy Caplan, which has become more and more common in the last few years. Jackson said that having open communication with everyone involved is the key to a good sex scene, in addition to good directing. “God bless [director] Silver Tree for being amazing and coming at this from the female gaze. There are so many ways to tell the story of a sex scene that don’t need to be about certain pieces of a woman’s body. There are so many different ways that this can give you all of that stuff without it having to be exploitive of the women’s body.”

As for Jackson’s wife, actress Jodie Turner-Smith, he says she actually doesn’t mind the sex scene aspect of the job. “Jodie is not fussed about my sex scenes,” Jackson says, adding a personal anecdote, “The sex scenes themselves, Jodie kind of enjoys them, actually. It’s a weird thing where she’s like a voyeur. So that works! If that’s your thing — excellent.” Hey, whatever works!

Fatal Attraction premieres on April 30th on Paramount+.

Kelly Clarkson Dominates The 2023 Daytime Emmy Nominations While Selena Gomez And Jennifer Hudson Also Picked Up Nods

In an interesting turn, many of the nominees for the 50th Daytime Emmy Awards are musicians who have nailed the art of double duty. Over the course of the past few years, several musicians have gone on to host daytime shows of their own, while continuing to make music.

Among these nominees are Kelly Clarkson, Selena Gomez, and Jennifer Hudson.

Clarkson, who is gearing up for the release of her 10th studio album, Chemistry, is leading the talk field nominations with 11 to her name. She has secured nominations for Daytime Talk Series, Daytime Talk Series Host, Writing Team For A Daytime Non-Fiction Program, and more.

Singer, actress, and EGOT holder Jennifer Hudson secured six nominations, also for Daytime Talk Series, as well as Technical Direction (Camerawork And Video), and Costume Design/Styling.

Gomez secured a single nomination for Culinary Series, with her HBO Max cooking show, Selena + Chef. She is likely to land some nods at the other Emmys following the premiere of the third season of Only Murders In The Building: The series was nominated last year for Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Elsewhere, Kings Of Leon are under consideration in the Arts And Popular Culture Program category for Kings Of Leon @ O2. Michelle Branch also makes an appearance on the nomination list, as Tamron Hall is nominated in the Promotional Announcement category for “Women Reclaiming Their Power: Michelle Branch & Angela Simmons.”

Here’s Everything New On Netflix In May 2023, Including A ‘Bridgerton’ Spinoff And More ‘I Think You Should Leave’

Spring has sprung, and if you’re hiding from allergy season, Netflix is here for you. The streaming service is roundly tackling the quadrants this month, too. Fans of bodice-clad drama will be thrilled for a Bridgerton prequel series while comedy lovers will want to tackle the return of Tim Robinson’s show and new standup specials from Wanda Skyes and Hannah Gadsby, which follow up on April’s John Mulaney offering. And the dads out there will be happy to see Arnold Schwarzenegger in his own TV show while playing a dad who can still kick a little ass.

Speaking of Arnold, the Netflix back library receives some of the action star’s most beloved movies along with the Austin Powers films, so you can fully head into intentionally cringey nostalgia mode. A bevy of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie movies will simultaneously surface as well, which must be a coincidence, and a new animated series will arrive from the minds behind Unbreakable Jimmy Schmidt and 30 Rock.

Here’s everything coming to (and leaving) Netflix in May.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (Netflix series streaming 5/4)

The corset-filled, 19th century, soap-operatic juggernaut returns for more of what Shondaland already delivered. The principal series will bring us third and fourth seasons, but for the time being, viewers can tuck into Charlotte’s origin story, on both historical and personal levels. Expect to see some familiar faces from the original show with younger Charlotte portrayed by India Amarteifio and Golda Rosheuvel as her present-day incarnation. Fingers crossed for a lot of Snorting Habit details, but the main thread will follow Charlotte’s arranged marriage to King George. She’s not thrilled at first, but the trailer suggests that she warms up to the idea.

I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson: Season 3 (Netflix series streaming 5/30)

The Emmy-winning leading man of this sketch comedy series is back with even more absurdist comedy sketches, will make his legions of fans throw all the memes onto Twitter for years to come. If Twitter lasts that long, that is. If you haven’t taken a gander at this series yet, do consider it if you’re fan of Nathan Fielder’s painfully awkward brand of humor. This show’s variety of chaos isn’t for everyone, but the people who love it… really love it.

Hannah Gadsby: Something Special (Netflix standup comedy special streaming 5/9)

Still best known for the highly successful and revelatory Nanette, Gadsby is back with a third Netflix special that aims at the feel-good crowd. This installment includes talk of weddings, and bunny-related trauma. You read that correctly.

FUBAR (Netflix series streaming 5/25)

This series looks like Mr. and Mrs. Smith but with a father-daughter pairing. Naturally, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a CIA operative who would love to retire but gets pulled back in for one last job, and this somehow involves teaming up with said daughter and growing confused by her lipstick vibrator. Ugh, dad.

Mulligan (Netflix series streaming 5/12)

This animated series hails from Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, so perhaps there’s some spirit of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt or 30 Rock that will be echoed. It’s also a satiric take on Earthlings aiming to survive the aftermath of an alien attack, although the trailer doesn’t give us a hint on how well it lands punches. The voice cast includes Fey, Nat Faxon, Chrissy Teigen, Sam Richardson, and Dana Carvey.

The Judge In The E. Jean Carroll Rape Trial Has Already Had Enough Of Trump’s ‘Entirely Inappropriate’ Social Media Posts

Given his long track record of lawsuits, not to mention his recent indictment and arrest, you’d think Donald Trump would be pretty good at court by now. But you would be wrong. Just one day into E. Jean Carroll’s civil trial — surrounding Carroll’s claims that Trump raped her in the dressing room of Manhattan’s Bergdorf Goodman department store in the mid-1990s — and the judge has already been forced to reprimand the former president. Who opted to forgo even showing up to the trial… as he didn’t want to cause any traffic jams?!

Still, as Raw Story reports, Trump’s looming presence is certainly being felt in the courtroom — in part because of what he’s doing outside the courtroom. Shortly before Carroll was set to begin testifying, Trump began attacking her on TRUTH Social. First there was this:

The E. Jean Carroll case, Ms. Bergdorf Goodman, is a made up SCAM. Her lawyer is a political operative, financed by a big political donor that they said didn’t exist, only to get caught lying about that. Just look at her CNN interview before & after the commercial break – Like a different person. She said there was a dress, using the ol’ Monica Lewinsky “stuff”, then she didn’t want to produce it. The dress should be allowed to be part of the case. This is a fraudulent & false story–Witch Hunt!

Then came essentially more of the same, about an hour later:

They got caught lying! The Miss Bergdorf Goodman case is financed by a big political donor that they tried to hide. Does anybody believe that I would take a then almost 60 year old woman that I didn’t know, from the front door of a very crowded department store, (with me being very well known, to put it mildly!), into a tiny dressing room, and …. her. She didn’t scream? There are no witnesses? Nobody saw this? She never made a police complaint? If I was seen there with a woman-BIG PRESS. SCAM!

Given the immediate nature of social media, and that such messages could be considered a form of witness intimidation, Carroll’s lawyer didn’t hesitate to bring up Trump’s posts essentially as he was sharing them to Judge Lewis Kaplan, who deemed them “entirely inappropriate.”

Joe Tacopina, Trump’s lawyer, took the brunt of the reprimand and — already knowing that his client will do and say what he wants — told the judge that he’d “try to address that with my client” and ask him to stop speaking about the case publicly.

“Well, I hope you’re more successful,” the judge replied, seemingly unconvinced that a talking-to would do much to dissuade Trump from saying whatever thought pops into his orange-tinged brain. Kaplan did warn Tacopina that his client “may or may not be tampering with a new source of potential liability … And I think you know what I mean.”

For the moment, Trump has gone back to the well for his most recent TRUTH Social posts, including sharing a video about Hunter Biden’s laptop and another about the rigged 2020 presidential election. Whether or not he will be able to resist posting about the trial again, however, remains to be seen.

Geraldo Rivera Is Now Slamming Tucker Carlson’s ‘Bullsh*t’ Jan. 6th Coverage In The Wake Of His Sh*tcanning

Did anyone at Fox News actually like Tucker Carlson? It’s an honest question to ask about their former white supremacist-supporting golden child. Geraldo Rivera just added his name to the list of folks who probably didn’t, sharing his thoughts on Carlson’s sudden and shocking departure via Twitter.

A recurring co-host of Fox News’ The Five, Rivera felt free to place much of the blame for the Jan. 6th insurrection at Carlson’s feet naming him one of the biggest instigators of dissent and voter fraud conspiracies at the network.

“I don’t wish ill on anybody,” Rivera wrote, “but there is no doubt — as I said at the time — Tucker Carlson’s perverse January 6 conspiracy theory was ‘bullsh*t.’ Having lost the election President Trump incited an insurrection that sought to undermine our Constitutional process.”

Rivera is one of the more famous Fox News talking heads to square up against Carlson post-firing. Staffers also claimed Carlson’s penchant for calling women “c***s” was one of the determining factors in his termination while other insiders have said Rupert Murdoch wanted him ousted for personal reasons.

So, despite the network taking a nosedive in the ratings department after the news broke, it sounds like Fox and Carlson are never ever ever getting back together.

ESPN Announced The Tip Times For The 2023 NBA Finals

We’re still a few weeks away from the start of the 2023 NBA Finals. As of Wednesday afternoon, only three teams have clinched a spot in the conference semifinals — the Philadelphia 76ers swept the Brooklyn Nets in the Eastern Conference, while the Denver Nuggets and the Phoenix Suns took care of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Clippers, respectively, in five games on Tuesday night in the Western Conference.

Wednesday night could be big for some more conference semifinal contenders, as the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, and Miami Heat can all punch their tickets to the next round. All of it, of course, is done in pursuit of a berth in the NBA Finals, and on Wednesday afternoon, ESPN announced the full schedule and tip times for this year’s games. The biggest news is that none of the games will have a later tip time on the east coast, as every game either starts at 8 or 8:30 p.m. EST.

Here is the full schedule:

Game 1: Thursday, June 1, 8:30 p.m. EST
Game 2: Sunday, June 4, 8 p.m. EST
Game 3: Wednesday, June 7, 8:30 p.m. EST
Game 4: Friday, June 9, 8:30 p.m. EST
Game 5 (if necessary): Monday, June 12, 8:30 p.m. EST
Game 6 (if necessary): Thursday, June 15, 8:30 p.m. EST
Game 7 (if necessary): Sunday, June 18, 8 p.m. EST

A common complaint among basketball fans on the east coast is that games that tip at 9 p.m. EST (or, with how pregame stuff works, a few minutes later than that) will oftentimes end close to midnight, which can make it hard to justify staying up for games, especially on a weekday. While we’ll have to see just how long pregame stuff runs with the new tip times, it’s good to see the league and ESPN attempt to remedy this while still tipping weekday games late enough so folks on the west coast can hopefully get home from work in time to watch.

All of the NBA Finals games will take place on ABC.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek Says The Platform Is ‘Ready’ To Increase Subscription Prices In The US

Spotify can be used for free, but to unlock more features, music lovers can subscribe to one of the streaming services’ premium tiers. The most basic of those plans, for a single user, currently costs $9.99 per month in the US. That could change soon, though.

Yesterday (April 25), in a conference call discussing Spotify’s first quarter earnings (as Billboard notes), Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said, “I think we are ready to raise prices, I think we have the ability to do that, but it really comes down to those negotiations [with major music industry stakeholders].”

Ek also noted, “We did raise prices in 46 different locations and markets last year, and even in those markets, we were still out performing. I feel really good about our ability to raise prices over time — that we have that ability — and we have lots of data now that backs that up. We may have been marginally helped by being a lower-cost provider, but it isn’t a primary part of our strategy and it’s not something that we’re thinking about. Instead, we’re working with our label partners to work […] to figure out what’s the best opportunity to do that. And that’s a more complex trade. When the timing’s right, we will raise it.”

This comes after Spotify had about $3.3 billion in total revenue during the first quarter of 2023. That’s a 14-percent increase over 2022, but as Billboard notes, it’s “slightly lower than the company expected as macroeconomic fears crimped Spotify’s advertising business by around $20 million.”

‘Ted Lasso’ Power Rankings: Look, Sometimes Progress Involves Tying A String To Your Privates

The Ted Lasso Power Rankings are a weekly analysis of who and/or what had the strongest performance in each episode. Most of the list will feature individual characters, although the committee does reserve the right to honor anything from animals to inanimate objects to laws of nature to general concepts. There are very few rules here.

Season 3, Episode 7 — “The Strings That Bind Us”

HONORABLE MENTION: Rebecca (not much to do this week but made the best of it with that face when Sam’s dad said he’s heard all about her); Jack (love bomber); Jade (picture her telling her friends about Nate); Barbara the CEO (give me a montage of Barbara riding the train in her pajamas and set it to “9 to 5” by Dolly Parton); coffee (it’s weird that coffee is just, like, a socially acceptable stimulant); Ash (nice hat); Brinda Barot (hate her); Trent Crimm (I like that he wears cool t-shirts now and would like to know more about his collection); spoons (no one cares); puking (if a genie granted me three wishes I honestly think one would be “never throw up again”); Higgins (“HOT TEA”); Will Kitman (I bet pretending to be Coach Beard was the best day of his life)

10. Sam

LASSO
APPLE

Tough week for Sam, between getting in fights with politicians online and getting his restaurant trashed just as his dad was coming and blowing up a little bit about it all in the locker room. That’s a lot for anyone to deal with, even before you get to “your coaches made you tie a string around your dick at practice and run around with it attached to one of your teammate’s dicks.” I like to imagine his dad asking how the season is going and Sam trying to explain this to him.

But still, Sam makes it into the power rankings proper, thanks mostly to the team coming together and helping to repair the restaurant. That was nice. It’s good to have people who have your back. He does need to stop reading his replies on Twitter, though. That’s not a healthy habit. Log off, Sam.

9. Isaac

LASSO
APPLE

Two things are important here:

THING NUMBER ONE: I need to know what Isaac’s favorite I Think You Should Leave sketch is. I feel like maybe it’s the “Baby of the Year” one.

THING NUMBER TWO: It is fascinating to me that I Think You Should Leave exists in the Ted Lasso universe because Sam Richardson, who stars in the “Baby of the Year” sketch and a few others, was also in this show a while back as a kind of evil billionaire. Did Isaac spend a lot of time telling people that this African billionaire looks just like the dude from his favorite sketch show? Why did it not come up during the show at all? Did he just recently binge ITYSL after the billionaire left? You can’t introduce a conundrum like this early in an episode. I’m not equipped to handle it.

8. Ted

LASSO
APPLE

The thing about the Total Football business is that it is objectively a little insane to introduce a whole new strategy like this between games in about two practices, which all goes back to the thing about Ted’s competence as a coach. He still knows very little about soccer. He’s opening practices to the public where his players have their dongs tied together. He’s giving long speeches about facial hair at halftime of games they’re getting clobbered in. Like, he’s definitely a good dude and has a talent for building character and camaraderie, but…

I really do want to read Trent Crimm’s book about all of this, especially if the season ends with the team getting relegated again. And I want to see Trent on the book tour giving interviews about it all. I know I’ve mentioned the string thing a bunch already but please stop for a minute right now and picture what a hilarious scandal that would be if various shouty sports shows got wind of it. Think about Stephen A. Smith screaming “You simply CAN NOT have people tie their ding-a-lings together” and Mike Greenberg’s face as it happens. Between this and the Sam Richardson stuff, it’s a miracle I was able to pay attention to the actual plot at all.

7. Croissants

LASSO
APPLE

Croissants are delicious and I love to make breakfast sandwiches out of them but they are also just very, very flaky and impossible to eat without getting little shards of pastry everywhere. By the time you’re done, it looks like a carb explosion on your shirt. It’s a real problem.

Also, not really related, but I would order a breakfast pastry called The Carb Explosion. I would need a nap afterwards but I think I would enjoy it.

6. Roy

LASSO
APPLE

Notes on Roy:

  • I worry sometimes that he’s becoming a sort of cartoon of what he once was, between his swearing and crankiness and general sadism
  • But I still do love him and laughed really hard at the reveal in the scene I screencapped up there
  • It will never not make me laugh that he shouts “WHISTLE” instead of blowing a whistle

It just dawned on me this week that he might get a head coaching job of his own at some point and now I really, really want to see how that works. I think he might end up in actual prison.

5. Keeley

LASSO
APPLE

I am happy that she is happy and receiving a lot of nice gifts. I like that she seems to have a lot of fuzzy hats. I hope she does not choke on a gift her rich new girlfriend hides in another pastry.

These are my thoughts on Keeley, who seems to be doing pretty great right now, all things considered.

4. Sam’s Dad

LASSO
APPLE

Sam’s dad:

  • Seems like a great dude
  • Is full of tranquility and good advice
  • Looks like he could crush someone’s head in his fist if he wanted to
  • Strolled into another chef’s kitchen and offered to cook dinner, which is not always advisable but seemed to work for him
  • Looks like he gives amazing hugs

He feels like one of those dudes who can say “everything will be okay” and have people believe him both instantly and completely.

3. Jamie Tartt

LASSO
APPLE

STOP GOING TO MEH

AND START GOING THROUGH MEH

I am very sure they are doing this on purpose now, giving him words to say that end in a hard E sound so he can plop his little “eh” in place of it. It’s happening every week at this point. Multiple times. I do not care. I love it and want them to do it forever. Every time he’s on the screen I sit here waiting for it. I giggle a little when it happens. I don’t know what this says about me as a viewer or professional television critic but I also kind of do not care. The only thing that upsets me about it all is that I did not get to hear him explain his ex-girlfriend’s new book to anyone.

“Keel-eh has a signed cop-eh of Sense and Sensibilit-eh.”

You just heard it in your head as you read that, didn’t you? Do not lie to me.

2. Nate

LASSO
APPLE

Most of the focus here, understandably, will be on his little wipeout on the street where he ruined his fancy arts and crafts project and ate pavement in front of the very mean girl he has a little crush on. That is fine. Again, it was pretty funny. I do like to see people fall down. I blame this on and/or credit this to many formative hours of my childhood spent in front of a television watching America’s Funniest Home Videos. But again, two things are worth noting here:

THING NUMBER ONE: I think it would be creepy and weird to get a little damn diorama asking you on a date from a little oddball who keeps showing up at your job and staring through the window at you, so let’s go ahead and say this was all for the best

THING NUMBER TWO: Nate looked at himself in the mirror without spitting at his reflection, which is both a huge step for him and a hilarious thing to be considered “a huge step”

I am on board with the Nate Redemption Tour now. Good for him. I hope he and Jane have a dozen little awkward/mean children, but split evenly, like how Kermit and Miss Piggy’s kids are all either frogs or pigs and never horrifying hybrids.

1. Coach Beard

A fascinating man.
