What’s Popular On Streaming Now

Every single week, our TV and film experts will list the most important ten streaming selections for you to pop into your queues. We’re not strictly operating upon reviews or accrued streaming clicks (although yes, we’ve scoured the streaming site charts) but, instead, upon those selections that are really worth noticing amid the churning sea of content. There’s a lot out there, after all, and your time is valuable.

TIE: 10. Renfield (Universal Pictures film streaming on VOD and Amazon Prime)

Nicolas Cage adds to his gathering of off-his-rocker characters to finally play Dracula. He apparently never stopped being Dracula on set, and most method acting can be insufferable, but can you blame Cage for deciding to go there with such a role? The other Nicholas (Hoult, that is) portrays poor Renfield, the assistant to Dracula because delegation must happen. They’re codependent, too. This movie hasn’t received the most flattering reviews, but if you are a Cage completist, you won’t be able to resist him in this nightmare role.

TIE: 10. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (Paramount Pictures film on VOD and Amazon Prime)

The good graces that be decided to make this tabletop role-playing game adaptation into a comedy, which was a wise move, considering that this obsession shouldn’t be taken too seriously, even by fans. Hugh Grant gets to be a baddie again while Michelle Rodriguez kicks ass as usual, and Chris Pine swashbuckles around with Regé-Jean Page smoldering in plain sight for good measure. This box-office hit can now liven up your living room, so stream to your nerd-heart’s content.

9. Mrs. Davis (Peacock series)

Slowly, this show is parceling out the details of Simone’s quest as Betty Gilpin keeps wearing that nun’s habit. Jesus! Literally. Watchmen oddball Damon Lindelof keeps things weird throughout this series, and I’m still convinced that Lube Man haunts the joint. Jake McDorman’s Wiley turns out to be far more than a pretty cowboy-face, and I wish we could discuss more, but this show is best left in a pure state for you to enjoy without being spoiled.

8. Dead Ringers (Amazon Prime Video series)

Somehow, this series adaptation of David Cronenberg’s 1988 film (starring Jeremy Irons) churns out a more unsettling iteration of twin gynecologists. Rachel Weisz picks up both roles while essentially also playing God at a fancy-pants fertility clinic. Along the way, a feminist interpretation shines through while the body-horrific series examines the complexity of reproductive health, but mainly, it will make you perhaps never go to the doctor again.

7. The Diplomat (Netflix series)

It’s about damn time that Keri Russell starred in a TV show again, and she’s back in the realm of political intrigue. Here, she portrays a less hardcore character (than in FX’s The Americans) in terms of danger and genuine, nail-biting risk, but she’s also balancing a challenging marriage with a demanding career. People cannot get enough of this meat-and-potatoes-style streaming TV in manner of The Night Agent, but the great news is that we’re going to receive second seasons of both series.

6. White House Plumbers (HBO series streaming on HBO Max)

Even if you didn’t know that you could enjoy a Watergate portrayal in this day and age, the Veep guys are here to bring you an absurd look behind the scenes of this honest-to-god fiasco. Justin Theroux bestows the world with a knockout performance as G. Gordon Liddy’s mustache with Woody Harrelson giving us a believable portrayal of the cocky-as-hell E. Howard Hunt. In the end, we receive a satiric look at the experiences of Egil Krogh during and after his Special Investigations Unit leadership. The “plumbers” comes from the cutesy nickname associated with plugging information leaks, and this David Mandel-directed limited series grows a bit stressful at times, but it always remembers to be fun.

5. Sweet Tooth (Netflix series)

Another Netflix show scored a swift renewal. Christian Convery will return as Gus for one more season, and this season doesn’t feature enough of him bouncing off against Nonso Anozie’s gruff Jeppard, but they’re both still in action. This season, Team Downey enlightens the audience more on the post-Great Crumble madness, and we get to see plenty more adorable Hybrids in a twisted fairytale that managed to involve a virus during pandemic times but still rise above that potential pitfall.

4. Barry (HBO series streaming on HBO Max)

Only a handful of episodes remain for the world to keep enjoying Anthony Carrigan’s irresistible performance as as the perpetually-disguised Noho Hank. Henry Winkler will also have to find a way to hop right back onto our TV screens, and Bill Hader’s brainchild will also collectively bid the world goodbye. It’s not easy to maintain the life of an assassin-turned-actor, after all, and even though this show is ending, we can still be grateful to have had such wildness at our disposal.

3. Silo (Apple TV+ series)

Justified creator Graham Yost ain’t in Harlan County here. Instead, he world-built an underground silo (as introduced in Hugh Howey’s first book, Wool) meant to house the 10,000 or so souls left on Earth following an apocalyptic event. Rebecca Ferguson portrays hard-as-nails engineer Juliette, who keeps the whole joint together. She uncovers too many secrets for her own good, naturally, and this show turns into a gripping meditation of how both truth and lies can be equally deadly. Ferguson’s co-stars include Rashida Jones, David Oyelowo, Tim Robbins, Harriet Walter, and Common’s leather jacket.

2. Succession (HBO series streaming on HBO Max)

After last week’s Logan Roy jumpscare, the world awaits word of how long it will take for Kendall and Roman to completely screw the pooch and prove to their dad’s ghost that they are “not serious people.” Let’s hope that we will see more of Lukas Matsson’s abs, along with more followup on that bitey stuff, but most of all, I’m hoping that Gerri goes nuclear after Roman’s gross power trip. Only a few more episodes remain of the Roys, y’all.

1. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (Netflix series)

Unlike with The Witcher, this spinoff enhances and is arguably even better than the original series. We get a different focus upon Shondaland’s corset-filled, 19th century soap opera of a world when the series ravels back in time to take in Charlotte’s origin story as portrayed by India Amarteifio, along with regular visits with Golda Rosheuvel as her present-day incarnation. It’s heartbreaking to know how this couple turns out in later life (Corey Mylchreest steps in as the younger version of King George), but at least we’ll always have that Snorting Habit to bring some relief.

Draymond Green Thought The Warriors Lost Momentum In Game 3 Due To The Lakers Being ‘On The Free Throw Line Every Time’

The Los Angeles Lakers took Game 3 of their Western Conference Semifinal series against the Golden State Warriors. Despite the defending champions racing out to an 11-point lead in the second quarter, the Lakers rode a 30-8 run in the frame to a nine-point halftime lead. That cushion grew and grew during the second half, and by the time things came to an end, L.A. went up, 2-1, thanks to a 127-97 win.

As has been the case in both Lakers wins, L.A.’s physicality and desire to attack the rim led to a whole lot of free throws. After the game, Draymond Green cited this as the main reason why the Warriors lost their grip on the game in the second quarter.

“They game stopped,” Green said when asked why the team’s momentum dissipated in the second. “[They were] on the free throw line every time.”

When asked about the way the officials called the game, Green said “it is what it is, game over now, don’t matter if I’m satisfied.” He also called it “frustrating” when a game stops and starts.

The Lakers shot 37 free throws on Saturday night, with 15 of them coming in the second quarter. This included a technical foul on Green, who expressed his discontent over his third foul of the night in such a way that he was T’d up.

The free throw line has been crucial to the Lakers in their two wins this season, as they outscored the Warriors by 20 points from the line in Game 1 and 16 points in Game 3. In their one loss in the series, the two teams were level on points from the charity stripe.

LeBron James Responded To Bronny’s Commitment To USC

Bronny James is going to play his college basketball in Los Angeles. In a post on his Instagram account on Saturday afternoon, Bronny announced his verbal commitment to USC, where he’ll join a class that features a pair of blue-chip prospects in Isaiah Collier, the No. 1 player in the nation, and Arrinten Page.

It’s a big win for the Trojans, which were believed to be one of three schools fighting for Bronny’s commitment, along with Ohio State and Oregon. And in the aftermath of the news, Bronny’s dad, LeBron James, hopped onto his Instagram and celebrated his oldest child’s decision.

“FIGHT ON ✌🏾!!!” LeBron wrote in his caption. “So damn proud of you kid! I have no words besides I LOVE YOU @bronny!!! LET’S GO!!!!!!!!🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣 #GoTrojans🗡

It’s one of the two big basketball questions about Bronny’s future that had been unanswered. The other, of course, won’t be answered until he’s on an NBA roster, and that’s whether or not his dad’s well-documented wish that they can play alongside one another will come to fruition. Bronny cannot enter the NBA until 2024 at the earliest, which lines up with LeBron’s next potential foray into free agency — his current option has a player option for 2024-25, and if he picks it up, he can become an unrestricted free agent at the end of that season.

This would mean that LeBron is playing into his 40s, but seeing as how he’s still playing at a high level at the age of 38, it’s certainly plausible that he has another 2-3 years of being a productive NBA player in him. But until then, we expect to see him courtside at a whole lot of USC basketball games while Bronny’s suiting up for the Trojans.

Bad Bunny Put On A Show During His Match At WWE Backlash

Back in March, it was announced that WWE would head to Puerto Rico for Backlash, marking the first time since January of 2005 that WWE would hold an event on the island. Unsurprisingly, it was revealed that Bad Bunny would be part of the proceedings, as the world famous artist and native of Puerto Rico has a rich history with the promotion and has turned himself into one of the best wrestlers among the celebrities who have stepped into the squared circle.

WWE set things up for Bunny to step into the ring at Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot for a San Juan Street Fight against Judgement Day’s Damian Priest, with whom he teamed at WrestleMania 37. Unsurprisingly, the crowd was electric as he made his way to the ring to his 2017 single “Chambea.”

Bunny, right out of the gate, showed off his chops in the ring, hitting Priest with a Michinoku driver.

The match eventually spilled to the outside of the ring, where Bunny hit Priest with a crossbody from the top rope.

Bunny was able to go to his shopping cart full of weapons and take it to Priest with some trash can lids and a kendo stick. After Priest got the kendo stick away from him, Bunny hit him with a Falcon Arrow for a two count, and eventually, Priest was able to pull a fast one on him by getting him out of the ring and throwing a big boot through a garbage can.

From there, Priest hit Bunny with both a garbage can lid and a kendo stick before things spilled into the crowd. While there, Priest was able to land a Broken Arrow through a table before throwing Bunny over his shoulder and carrying him back to ringside.

After ducking out of the path of a kick from Priest that hit the turnbuckle, Bunny started to attack his left leg, which included a kendo stick right to the ankle. He wrapped a chain around Priest’s ankle and pulled his leg into a turnbuckle, then smashed his leg with a chair. Eventually, Priest’s Judgement Day partners, Finn Balor and Dominik Mysterio, ran in to interfere, only for Rey Mysterio to come to Bunny’s aid. While that wasn’t enough, Carlito made a cameo in a Latino World Order shirt to lend a hand, which ended with Rey hitting Dominik with a 619 and Carlito spitting an apple in his face. While Judgement Day were attempting to retreat, Savio Vega came out with Latino World Order to take them out.

Back in the ring, Bunny threw a figure four on Priest and attacked his injured leg, which led to him nearly tapping out. Priest was ultimately able to get out of it, but Bunny countered for a near-fall, and after Priest went head-first into a chair stuck in the corner, Bunny landed a Sliced Bread #2 for another near-fall. To get the pinfall, Bunny landed a Canadian Destroyer, which was a callback to his match at WrestleMania 37.

The LWO came out after with a Puerto Rican flag for Bunny, who celebrated while the crowd sang along to his entrance music. While this did not close the night, this will go down as one of the most entertaining matches in WWE this year.

Mage Wins The 149th Kentucky Derby

The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby took place on Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs. In a thrilling race, Mage, which closed at 15-1 odds to win, was able to use a late charge to overtake Two Phil’s and win the race. You can watch the full race right here.

Two Phil’s was able to hold on for second, while Angel of Empire was able to take third. It was a stunning result for Mage, which entered the day with only three starts under its belt and one win, and now gets to add a win in the Kentucky Derby to its list of accomplishments. Mage was rode by Javier Castellano, a 45-year-old native of Venezuela who had never won the Kentucky Derby despite this being the 16th race in which he participated. After the race, NBC caught up with Castellano to get his reaction to finally getting over the hump.

Next up for Mage in its efforts to win the Triple Crown is the Preakness Stakes, which will take place on Saturday, May 20 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. The horse will look to become the first since 2018 to win all three races, when Justify became the 13th horse in history to earn the honor.

Bronny James Announced His Commitment To USC On Instagram

Bronny James is not going too far away from his own backyard to play his college basketball. James, the eldest son of LeBron James and one of the most highly-regarded prospects in his high school class, announced that he will head to USC on his Instagram account on Saturday afternoon.

It was believed that the Trojans were one of three schools that James was seriously considering, with Oregon and Ohio State viewed as the other reported finalists to land him. It’s worth mentioning that the James family kept Bronny’s recruitment largely under wraps, as one of the few public comments that anyone made came when LeBron refuted a report that the Ducks were the frontrunners last year.

James will join a highly-regarded recruiting class that includes the No. 1 player in the nation, Georgia guard Isaiah Collier, and a 4-star center in Arrinten Page, who is the No. 46 player in the class and Collier’s high school teammate. With the addition of James, the No. 21 overall recruit and a 5-star prospect per 247Sports Composite rating, the Trojans currently have the No. 12 class in the nation.

A 6’3 guard and a McDonald’s All American selection, James will join a USC team that went 22-11 last year and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The Trojans lost as a 10-seed to Michigan State in the opening round.

Technical Fouls Got Handed Out During Heat-Knicks After Cody Zeller Shoved Julius Randle

The Miami Heat and the New York Knicks have had plenty of battles over the years that have led to tensions boiling over between the two teams. While things didn’t quite get to the level of some of the more notorious moments in the history of this rivalry, a handful of technical fouls got handed out late in the third quarter of Game 3 in Miami on Saturday afternoon.

Immanuel Quickley went for a runner and made it, all while a few players bumped into each other under the rim. Cody Zeller didn’t appreciate how Julius Randle was going about his business, which led to the Heat veteran shoving the Knicks All-Star in the back and shoving him to the ground. This led to some more pushing and shoving, with Isaiah Hartenstein going after Zeller and Cody Martin getting his teammate back.

Erik Spoelstra made a beeline over to the kerfuffle to get Martin and pull him out of there, while Tom Thibodeau eventually made his way over into the fracas, mostly to make sure everything was cool. By the time the dust settled, the officials determined that Hartenstein, Martin, and Zeller all deserved to get hit with a technical for this. We’ll have to wait until later in this series to see if things get so nasty between the teams that Thibodeau grabs onto someone’s leg.

Instead Of Hosting ‘SNL,’ Pete Davidson Gave Iconic Brooklyn Pizza To Striking WGA Writers

In another timeline, Pete Davidson would have made his triumphant return to SNL this weekend, and only about a year after leaving the show. Instead negotiations between the Writers Guild of America and Hollywood studios and streamers broke down over matters such as fair pay and regulating AI technology. So instead, Davidson is giving pizza — great pizza — to striking writers.

As caught by Entertainment Weekly, the Bupkis star was seen visiting the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, where a coterie of WGA members were picketing for their demands. He didn’t arrive empty-handed: He came bearing boxes of pizza from L&B Spumoni Gardens — one of the town’s most iconic Italian eateries, known for (among other things) their square Sicilian slices (and equally delicious spumoni). The joint is located in the deep South Brooklyn neighborhood of Gravesend, so Davidson made quite the trek to bring writers some top shelf grub.

“I got Spumoni’s for everyone,” Davidson says in the video. “Gotta support the writers, man! No shows without the writers.”

Davidson isn’t the only performer whose SNL hosting gigs have come to an end due to the WGA strike. Kieran Culkin was supposed to host with Labrinth, while Jennifer Coolidge and The Foo Fighters were set for the season finale.

He also joins a number of performers who’ve come out in support of the strike, including Quinta Brunson, Natasha Lyonne, Brett Goldstein, Bowen Yang, Cynthia Nixon, Rob Lowe, Jimmy Fallon, and Jay Leno. The Bear breakout Ayo Edebiri was even seen marching alongside the striking writers, while Drew Barrymore dropped out of hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards in solidarity.

A Tigers-Cardinals Game Was Interrupted By A Squirrel That Ran Through The Infield

The second game of a three-game weekend series between the Detroit Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals took place on Saturday afternoon in Missouri. At one point in the bottom of the seventh inning, Lars Nootbaar was able to get ahead of the count against Will Vest, who started the first at bat of the half inning by throwing a pair of balls.

And then, the crowd started to roar, while Nootbaar asked for a timeout. The reason was pretty simple: There was a squirrel that ran onto the field and everyone wanted to take a second to make sure it got out of the way while the professional baseball players were playing their baseball game.

Vest just stood there and watched as the squirrel prepared to run over to Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson. The entire time, the crowd at Busch Stadium was cheering extremely loudly for the little guy, which eventually ran off the field and hid behind the tarp on the first base line. Unfortunately for the announcers which hoped this would lead to a rally, that didn’t happen — after a walk for Nootbaar, Paul Goldschmidt stepped up to the plate and grounded into a double play.

Conan Gray Might Be Teasing A New Song With Mysterious Posters

Conan Gray looked confident as ever in Balmain at the 2023 Met Gala last Monday, May 1. The singer-songwriter was spotted smiling with Olivia Rodrigo and posing next to Lil Nas X. Maybe Rodrigo was smiling because Gray clued her in on a new song.

On Saturday, May 6, people began tweeting photos of mysterious Gray-related poster, which read “HELP WANTED: CONAN NEEDS YOUR HELP WORKING THE NIGHT SHIFT.” At the bottom, a website to apply is listed.

Republic Records also posted a photo of the poster in Los Angeles, California to its Instagram Story.

According to fans’ tweets, the website asks people to text 323-576-0686, and there’s a muffled audio recording of (presumably) Gray saying, “You’re shopping at Food Heaven, where the deals go on and on and on and on and on and on — and on” ahead of a brief poppy beat.

One fan connected the audio teaser to Gray’s Instagram caption from April 20, and the same person relayed that posters have been spotted in LA and Texas.

Gray was Uproxx‘s August 2022 cover star following the June release of his second studio album, Superache, and forecasted what his next album might tackle.

“Maybe on my third album, I’ll have something about falling in love,” he said. “That would be great, wouldn’t it?”

He added, “I want someone to come into my life and just destroy my heart — stomp on it, make it disappear.”
