11 Lagers That Craft Beer Experts Always Keep In Their Fridge

After the end of a long day, nothing beats a cold, crisp lager. Tons of other beer styles fit the bill to a degree, including IPAs, sour beers, and pale ales, but none that scratch that proverbial itch the way a lager does. There’s something about the lightness combined with a hint of hop and malt that hits just right.

This is why even with the bazillion beer styles available, you’ll always find a few lagers in our fridge on the regular. A crisp pilsner, malty lager, or one of the numerous other lager styles always have a place in our refrigerator. This is because a great lager is like a Swiss army knife. You always want it on hand to make use of in any situation.

Brewers agree with this sentiment. That’s why we asked a few well-known brewers, craft beer experts, and brewing professionals to tell us the one lager they always keep stocked in their fridges no matter the season. Keep reading to see all of their selections to see what you need to grab a tuck away in your fridge.

Wren House Valley Beer

Wren House Valley Beer
Wren House

Zach Fowle, Advanced Cicerone and head of marketing at Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. in Phoenix, Arizona

ABV: 4.6%

Average Price: Limited Availability

The Beer:

Spring is hot in Arizona and this crispy GABF silver medal winner provides maximum refreshment when the weather gets spicy.

Tasting Notes:

Flaked corn and Saaz hops give it more depth of flavor than your standard lawnmower beer, but the finish is as clean as anything from the big brewers.

Goldfinger Original Lager

Goldfinger Original Lager
Goldfinger

Ryan Pachmayer, head brewer at Yak & Yeti Brewpub and Restaurant in Arvada, Colorado

ABV: 5.2%

Average Price: $12 for a six-pack

The Beer:

Goldfinger Original Lager was my favorite beer on a recent Chicago stop. I could drink this all day and be very happy. Also apparently it has a 4.0 on Untappd, which after the “lager curve” probably means it’s the best beer in the world.

Tasting Notes:

The helles-style beer was clean and easy to drink, yet packed with light bready flavor, a clear balancing bitterness, and a touch of both sulfur and hop flavor.

Wedge Helles Bock

Wedge Helles Bock
Wedge

Clay Carlisle, co-founder and head brewer of Bevi Bene Brewing Co. in Charleston, South Carolina

ABV: 6.4%

Average Price: Limited Availability

The Beer:

This may be obvious, but I have to go with a maibock such as the Helles Bock by Carl Melissas at Wedge Brewing. It’s the perfect lager to get you excited for spring, with its pale golden color, noble hop bitterness that keeps you wanting another sip, and a higher abv to thaw out your bones.

Tasting Notes:

When you find a well-made maibock, the floral aroma of the hops mixes with the complexity of decoction, and the lengthy lagering process helps it all come together to produce the perfect crisp fridge lager for springtime.

Löwenbräu Munich Lager

Löwenbräu Munich Lager
Löwenbräu

George Hummel, grain master of My Local Brew Works in Philadelphia

ABV: 5.2%

Average Price: $9 for a six-pack

The Beer:

Sometimes I just have to go back to the beer I would steal from dad’s fridge. Löwenbräu Munich Lager was my German American dad’s beer of choice.

Tasting Notes:

This beer is wonderfully balanced. It’s malty without being cloying. It’s just perfectly balanced and clean.

Firestone Walker Pivo Pils

Firestone Walker Pivo Pils
Firestone Walker

Jeremy Marshall, brewmaster at Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma, California

ABV: 5.3%

Average Price: $11 for a six-pack

The Beer:

When I can find Pivo Pils by Firestone Walker, it’s going into the fridge. This is a beefed-up version of a European lager, meaning that while the alcohol stays low (five and some change), the bitterness is robust (40BU) and it has my favorite thing in the world: dry hops.

Tasting Notes:

However, it is with a variety I’ve yet to play with myself, Saphir, which gives a soft, floral honeysuckle jasmine as opposed to the resinous pine sap of American hops. And who doesn’t want a beer dry-hopped with blue jewels right?

New Belgium Old Aggie

New Belgium Old Aggie
New Belgium

Zeke Peyton, lead brewer at WeldWerks Brewing Co. in Greeley, Colorado

ABV: 4.2%

Average Price: $12 for a six-pack

The Beer:

I love a good old fashioned American lager, like New Belgium’s Old Aggie. It’s a low-ABV beer that works great with a wide variety of food and occasions. It’s super easy to drink and sometimes, or honestly a lot of the time, that’s all I want at the end of the day.

Tasting Notes:

It’s so balanced in its character with just enough malt to keep your mind on the beer and no bitterness getting in the way of a nice smooth finish.

Moonlight Death & Taxes

Moonlight Death & Taxes
Moonlight

Kevin McGee, founder of Healdsburg Beer Company in Healdsburg, California

ABV: 5.3%

Average Price: $14 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

The Beer:

Death & Taxes by Moonlight Brewing in Santa Rosa, California is an absolute must-have. Moonlight is one of the finest craft lager producers out there today and Death & Taxes is a hallmark of their skill. This is one of those beers that always calls for another one. Absolutely a fridge staple.

Tasting Notes:

A dark lager, it’s basically a California version of a dark Czech lager and hits that perfect spot of flavor and complexity meeting drinkability.

Yellowhammer Midnight Special

Yellowhammer Midnight Special
Yellowhammer

Josh Bartlett, founder of Learning to Homebrew in Tuscaloosa, Alabama

ABV: 5.8%

Average Price: Limited Availability

The Beer:

What do you get when you pair the crisp, light, and refreshing qualities of clean lager yeast with the roasted, bitter chocolate flavor of a stout? The schwarzbier. A sometimes overlooked style, the schwarzbier (which literally means black beer) is crisp enough to drink in the summer but hardy enough for the winter. Spring is likely the best time to stock it in the fridge. A local favorite of mine is Midnight Special by Yellowhammer Brewing in Huntsville, Alabama.

Tasting Notes:

It features a stronger roasted coffee flavor with a light, almost peppery hop addition, along with 5.8% ABV.

Perennial Pils

Perennial Pils
Perennial

Garth E. Beyer, certified Cicerone® and owner and founder of Garth’s Brew Bar in Madison, Wisconsin

ABV: 5%

Average Price: $12 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

The Beer:

Pils from Perennial Brewing is the lager that I always have within reaching distance. It’s a classic German-style lager — slightly bitter, but what I love most is that they dry-hop it with more German hops to make the nose of it even more pronounced.

Tasting Notes:

Overall, it’s a highly attenuated pilsner with punctual floral and spicy characteristics. Its brightness forces you to slow down and enjoy every ounce of it.

Honest Weight Prescott

Honest Weight Prescott
Honest Weight

Kyle Warren, lead brewer at Exhibit ‘A’ Brewing Company in Framingham, Massachusetts

ABV: 4.7%

Average Price: $18 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

The Beer:

Honest Weight Artisan Beer Prescott is named after one of the Western Massachusetts towns that was flooded nearly a century ago to create the Quabbin Reservoir, Boston’s primary water source. Prescott is a German-style pilsner that never disappoints.

Tasting Notes:

A subtle Bavarian water profile, German malt, and Noble hops set the stage for an effervescent and crispy crusher that leaves you wanting little else — other than knowing when the next release will be.

Jack’s Abby House Lager

Jack’s Abby House Lager
Jack’s Abby

Joe Mashburn, head brewer of Night Shift Brewing in Boston

ABV: 5.2%

Average Price: $9 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

The Beer:

Lager in my fridge: Jack’s Abby House Lager. It’s a simple, crisp, clean, easy-drinking lager. Jack’s Abby makes nothing but lagers and this is their flagship beer for a reason.

Tasting Notes:

It’s a wonderful example of Helles, light bread, light hops, clean and to the point.

‘The Marvels’ Teaser Trailer Is Triple The Trouble (And Fun) And Brings Back Nick Fury’s Worst Nightmare

“We’re not a team.” – Carol Danvers

Captain Marvel is not at all thrilled about having companions, as the new The Marvels teaser trailer reveals, but she’s got them anyway. As anticipated, this includes Monica Rambeau (Wandavision) and Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), and to stay true to the film’s title, they will come together as The Marvels.

Not only that, but The Flerkin, Goose, has returned, hopefully to put some more fear into Nick Fury’s world. Because the last time he trusted someone…. he lost an eye. And after The Flerkin strikes terror into Fury’s heart, he’ll see that there’s a whole crew of Flerkins on the scene, too. Meow.

Back to Carol’s superhero companions: yep, you’re gonna have to keep watching Disney+ shows to fully appreciate the newer MCU phases, but fortunately, Wandavision and Ms. Marvel are two good ones. Again, and as we see in the trailer, Danvers is not down (at least initially) with this situation, and when she stumbles upon Khan’s shrine of a bedroom, the skepticism is fully on. That push-and-pull should provide for some good (deadpan) comic relief, and after the most recent Ant-Man installment, the MCU could use the refreshing vibe of this teaser trailer.

The Beastie Boys “Intergalactic” only seems to heighten that mood, as does Khan’s reaction to The Flerkin. From the film’s synopsis:

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.

The Marvels hits theaters on November 10.

Millie Bobby Brown Invoked Taylor Swift To Seemingly Announce Her Engagement, But Swifties Aren’t Sure About The Lyric Choice

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bongiovi (son of Jon Bon Jovi) are believed to have started dating in June 2021. Now, it appears the two have taken the relationship to the next level: Today (April 11), Brown all but explicitly confirmed she and Bongiovi are engaged with an Instagram post. It includes a photo of the two with a ring on Brown’s ring finger, accompanied by a lyric from Taylor Swift’s “Lover”: “I’ve loved you three summers now, honey, I want ’em all [white heart emoji].”

The full verse that lyric comes from goes, “We could let our friends crash in the living room / This is our place, we make the call / And I’m highly suspicious that everyone who sees you wants you / I’ve loved you three summers now, honey, but I want ’em all.”

Reactions to this from Swift’s fan base have been mixed. There are those who are excited for Brown’s major life move, those who are surprised because they thought the 19-year-old actor was still a child, and those who think the timing of using that particular lyric is a bit off or bittersweet; “Lover” was released on August 16, 2019, and Swift and Alwyn’s relationship is believed to have started three years earlier. So, the lyric is seemingly about Swift and Alwyn’s relationship, which reportedly came to an end just days ago.

Messages from fans included, “Time and place Millie I beg you we’re in mourning,” “Not the lover lyric when swifties are still grieving,” and, “millie read the room.”

At any rate, congratulations to Brown and Bongiovi!

‘Stranger Things’ Star Millie Bobby Brown Is Engaged To Jon Bon Jovi’s Son, Jake

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown took to Instagram to announce that she is engaged to Jake Bongiovi, the son of singer Jon Bon Jovi. “I’ve loved you three summers now, honey, I want ’em all,” she wrote, a reference to the Taylor Swift song “Lover,” along with a photo of the happy couple.

Bobby Brown, 19, and Bongiovi, 20, were first linked in June 2021 when he wrote “Bff <3” in an Instagram Story. Later, in a photo taken on her 18th birthday where the pair dressed as Barbie and Ken, he wished her “happy birthday barbie ily <3,” to which she replied, “Endless love.”

Bongiovi is all over Bobby Brown’s Instagram, including a behind-the-scenes photo taken from the Stranger Things set. “Following the release of season 4, part 1 of Stranger Things, Brown posted a photo on set with Bongiovi and Wolfhard, who plays her boyfriend on the show. She captioned the snap, “when two worlds collide,” People reported.

Brown previously shared with WIRED that she met her man on Instagram. They first sparked dating rumors in 2021, and the couple made their red carpet debut at the BAFTA Awards in March 2022. In October 2022, Brown told ET that her man was “pretty unbelievable” as the pair attended the New York City premiere of her film Enola Holmes 2.

They better walk down the aisle to “It’s My Life.”

Prolific Father Nick Cannon Would Be ‘All In’ On Taylor Swift Being The Mother Of His 13th Child

Nick Cannon currently has 12 children, while the number 13 has recurred throughout Taylor Swift’s career. So, Swift having Cannon’s 13th child would certainly be something, and it’s an idea that Cannon is up for, as he noted in a recent interview with Howard Stern.

The clip starts with Stern asking for a definitive answer on whether Cannon is done having kids. He refused to be concrete, though, because he simply doesn’t know what the future holds. He did say, however, “I’m happy currently with, you know, my dozen that I got.”

Stern pushed the issue, asking, “Who would be the woman that would make you have a baby again?” Cannon laughed off the question, saying, “I’m not doing this. I can see the headlines.” Stern continued, “If I said to you, ‘Taylor Swift wants to have a baby with you.’” Cannon replied, “Absolutely, I’m in. Let’s go! That’s the one! I’m all in.”

Cannon added:

“First of all, she’s an amazing songwriter. And what I do love about Taylor Swift is the fact that she has been so vulnerable and open with all of her music since such a young girl. And she kind of like me, like… me and Taylor’s numbers is very similar when we talk about being in these streets [laughs]! So I think she would relate to me very well based off of, like, ‘Yo, you’ve dated a lot of people in the public eye, so have I,’ so we probably will really understand each other.”

Stern then made note of Swift’s reported break-up with Joe Alwyn and Cannon joked, “You know I know that, Howard! You know I’m… my Spidey-Senses was tingling!”

The whole conversation felt very tongue-in-cheek, so probably don’t expect a pregnancy announcement from Cannon and Swift any time soon.

Check out the interview clip above.

Apparently, Drake And Rick Ross Are ‘Identical Twins,’ Or So The Rapper Joked On Instagram After A Hilarious Fan Mix-Up

Drake has many musical personas, including Champagne Papi, 6 God, Certified Love Boy, and more. However, there was one identity the “Search & Rescue” rapper has kept secret for years. Apparently, Drake And Rick Ross are ‘identical twins,’ or the musician joked on Instagram after a hilarious fan mix-up.

Buffalo-owning rapper Rick Ross took to his Instagram Stories to share a humbling encounter he had with a fan while on vacation in Jamacia. After Ross was approached by a pair of overly excited fans, the women shared their love of the musician. But when he went to ask the women, “Do you know my name,” he wasn’t prepared for their answer.

Initially afraid to share their answer, both women answered, “I do… Drake.”

Partly annoyed, Ross replies, “Incorrect.” Instead of hiding the footage of this bizarre encounter, the self-proclaimed biggest boss uploaded the clip to his Instagram Stories with the caption, “They need you in Jamaica,” tagging his frequent collaborator Drake in the posting.

Fans had a field day with clip, but it eventually crossed Drake’s desk, and he found it equally as funny. The musician reposted the original posting from Ross, adding a caption of his own. “At least they know we identical twins,” retagging Ross.

Fred Again.. Performed An Impressive NPR Tiny Desk Concert, Putting His Multi-Hyphenated Skills On Full Display

Fred Again.. had a big year in 2022 with his release of the album Actual Life 3 (January 1 – September 9 2022). But the momentum hasn’t stopped. He’s on Skrillex’s new album, and joined him for a special pop-up show at New York’s legendary Madison Square Garden. Today (April 10), he took his talent to NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert.

The performance is intimate and impressive, serving as a recap of last year’s record. He plays “Kyle (I Found You),” “Roze (Forgive),” “Adam (Interlude),” “Me (Heavy),” “Berwyn (Interlude), ” “Delilah (Pull Me Out Of This),” and “Faisal (Envelops Me).”

Last year, he discussed what it was like making music with Ed Sheeran. “We were very sort of twins from the beginning,” he said. “We have a very similar tastes and upbringing in music. So, it was very natural and effortless. And we both like to write quickly. And the thing I would say mostly from… it’s similar to Burna Boy, actually. And it’s the instincts thing. He’s just instinct, instinct, instinct, instinct. Every time he’s writing, it’s just like, ‘Go, go, go, go, work it out later.’ And sometimes there’ll be a little tweak you make later, but fundamentally, the thing is born from instinct, and then you can fine-tune the thing beyond that.”

The Showrunner Of ‘Succession’ Was ‘Very Nervous’ To Tell Brian Cox About You Know What

Warning: There be spoilers for Succession Season 4 Episode 3, which had a big, shocking thing happen.

Over four seasons of Succession, Brian Cox has gone from respected character actor — he was the original screen incarnation of Hannibal Lecter, in 1986’s Manhunter, to name one illustrious credit — to a household name. Since then he’s cut a fearsome figure. Not only is he terrifying as tyrannical one-man business empire Logan Roy, but he’s not above speaking his mind, including about his colleagues’ acting approaches.

So if you’re Jesse Armstrong, Succession’s creator and showrunner, and you have to inform Cox that his character’s going to eat it, you’d probably be a little on edge. In a behind-the-episode featurette on HBO Max, Armstrong talks about what that was like.

“I was very nervous to tell him ’cause there’s lots of anxieties about whether it’s the right creative decision, and there’s anxieties that someone who I love working with and who’s been at the center of the show will feel rejected on a human level for not being in it anymore when he’s been so central to the whole thing,” Armstrong revealed.

But he had nothing to worry about, and Cox “took it like a total pro,” Armstrong said. “He was professional and decent and kind enough to make it a pretty good meeting but a sad and significant one.”

Cox repaid the compliment. “When you work with the genius of somebody like Jesse, it’s always sad when that comes to an end, there’s no question about it, because you’ve had such great respect,” he says in the featurette.

In short, Brian Cox in real life isn’t as terrifying as Logan Roy. Even if you do some variation on Method acting on set, the worst he’s going to do is complain about you to journalists.
