A TV Anchor Who Was Fired After Using A Snoop Dogg Lyric Got Support From Whoopi Goldberg And Charlamagne Tha God

The campaign for a local TV anchor and meteorologist just grew by two. After news of Mississippi on-air talent Barbie Bassett might have been fired for using rapper Snoop Dogg’s lyric and signature catchphrase, “For sizzle, my nizzle,” social media was filled with debates. Following a segment discussing the mogul’s new wine venture, Bassett used the slang to close out the segment.

After hearing about the supposed firing through social media, Charlamagne Tha God and Whoopi Goldberg took to their respective platforms to vocalize their support for the fellow TV professional.

During Monday’s The Breakfast Club broadcast, the shock jock posed the question, “She can’t say ‘Fo shizzle, my nizzle?’” After thinking about the line further, he added, “Oh, I guess because it’s a derivative of n****,” before exclaiming, “She might not even know what nizzle means.”

The mogul said, “That’s the thing with hip-hop; hip-hop is so big and mainstream. Who can consume it, and who can’t? Who can repeat slang, and who can’t?”

Charlamagne has been in the hot seat several times for his remarks on-air and online. Pulling from his experience surrounded by controversy, he was sure to close the discussion with, “That’s not a fireable offense.”

Moved by the story, Goldberg, who was recently suspended for making “insensitive remarks” on air, also came to the anchor’s defense. As the headline was discussed amongst The View’s panelists, Goldberg passionately declared, “There has to be a book of stuff that nobody could ever say, ever, ever, ever. Include everything,” she said. “The things that change, ‘You can say this, but you can’t say that, but next week you might not be able to say this,’ it’s hard to keep up. It’s hard to keep up. And if you’re a person of a certain age, there’s stuff we do, and we say.”

Goldberg took it even further, adding, “Just because we’re on television doesn’t mean we know everything. We don’t know everything you’re not supposed to do. And if there is something someone says if you’re not going to give them the opportunity to explain why they said it, at least give them the grace of saying, ‘You know what? I’ve just been informed that I should not of done that,’ as opposed to, ‘You’re out.’”

Although the network has not released a formal statement, Bassett is no longer listed under the news team on its website. In addition, Bassett’s professional biography has also been scrubbed from the website.

Britney Spears Talks Fake Boobs And Lip Syncing Rumors In A Vintage ‘SNL’ Monologue She Fondly Revisited

A couple days ago, Saturday Night Live announced the hosts and musical guests for their upcoming April episodes. It appears Britney Spears may have seen that, because that same day, she took to Instagram to reflect on one of her own times hosting SNL by sharing a funny clip from her opening monologue.

Posting the 50-second clip, Spears wrote, “Funny SNL skit [rose emojis] !!!”

The video comes from the May 13, 2000 episode, on which Spears was both host and musical guest, her first time in either role. In the clip, Spears starts, “Now that I’m here, I think this is a perfect place to clear up some crazy, crazy rumors I keep hearing about myself, like that I can’t perform without lip-syncing, OK, which is not true.” From there, she goes on to discuss a Grammy Awards performance, but as she speaks, her voice is muted and comically replaced with an obvious voiceover recording.

She then added, “Oh yeah, there’s one more, oh yeah, the one about my boobs being fake. That is just ridiculous! I mean, come on! I’m 18 and I’m still growing, you know?” As she speaks, though, her “breasts” move around in an unnatural way, due to some sort of device hidden under her shirt.

Spears more seriously addressed lip syncing allegations in a 2017 interview, saying, “A lot of people think that I don’t sing live. Because I’m dancing so much I do have a little bit of playback, but there’s a mixture of my voice and the playback. It really pisses me off because I am busting my ass out there and singing at the same time and nobody ever really gives me credit for it.”

Draymond Green Got Into It With Pelicans Players On Back-To-Back Plays But Avoided Getting Ejected

Draymond Green is a pretty passionate basketball player. While he insists that he only gets technical fouls when he wants them, the second quarter of Tuesday night’s game between the Golden State Warriors and the New Orleans Pelicans really put that theory to the test.

With just under four minutes left in the half, Brandon Ingram got the ball in transition and Green decided to stop him from getting the easy bucket by shoulder checking him for a foul. Ingram wasn’t happy about this, so he confronted Green and the two were immediately broken up. But still, it was determined that both Ingram and Green got a technical foul, which … did not sit especially well with Golden State’s veteran forward.

While he was able to avoid getting a second tech, Green was also hit with a flagrant foul. Ok, fine, let’s get back to the game, where things almost boiled over just seconds later, as Green went up for a layup, Herb Jones drew a charge, both guys hit the deck, and there were a lot of feet flying all over the place while the two got up. Once again, the two were separated, while Green was awfully fired up over the whole thing.

Perhaps Green wanted to get T’d up here because things were going poorly for the Warriors. But that did not happen, so he was able to remain in the game — and, perhaps more importantly, avoid getting suspended for his 18th tech on the season.

Whoops! Trump’s Big Return Interview On Fox News Still Couldn’t Beat Tucker Or ‘The Five’

Donald Trump may have launched his 2024 campaign over four months ago, but he hasn’t done one of his rambly, whiny weekday interviews on Fox News since well before that. That’s because the news network, with whom he’s been feuding, treated the former president to a “soft ban,” which only got more pronounced after his disastrous end-of-year antics, such as dining with anti-Semites. That soft ban ended starting Monday night, when Trump made his triumphant return to chat with his good pal, alleged journalist Sean Hannity. But while the interview drew plenty of viewers, he was still out-watched by two other Fox News shows that day.

As per Mediaite, Trump’s return — which featured the usual moaning, as well as some happy thoughts, like him crowing about how his new, weird J6 Choir single technically did well, sort of — drew 3.04 million viewers. Sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? He and Hannity did handily beat The Rachel Maddow Show over at MSNBC, which wrangled in “only” 2.39 million.

However, you know who did even better? The show that airs right before Hannity: Tucker Carlson Tonight, hosted by the guy who definitely doesn’t still secretly hate Trump and definitely doesn’t only say things that will rile up his base. Tucker got 3.34 million — which is still nothing on the network’s most popular program, the late afternoon/early evening group chat-a-thon The Five. That one got 3.78 million, or a little over 700,000 more viewers than the show with the presumptive GOP nominee for president in 2024. Who, again, was returning to Fox News for the first time in about six months.

Trump is still crushing it in the polls, gaining more supporters while his once-hoped-for successor, Ron DeSantis, keeps losing them. But what if neither of them is really all that popular? In the meantime, part two of Trump’s sit-down with Hannity aired Tuesday night, so maybe he’ll get a Mulligan.

A Fan Turned Sabrina Carpenter’s Tour Into A Live Therapy Session Filled Of Their Wild Dating Woes

Since strict lockdown policies have been lifted, concert culture has evolved. Sabrina Carpenter learned this during one of her latest tour stops. The “Nonsense” singer is currently on the road promoting her latest album, Emails I Can’t Send, and fans are pouring out their emotions in more ways than one.

While transitioning between tracks, a concertgoer in the front row held up her phone with a note on the screen, attempting to catch Carpenter’s eye. Her plan worked and as the musician walked over, she asked the fan, “What is this? Is this your phone number.” The concergoer then clarified that the number actually belongs to a guy she’s dating, to which the singer urged, “Don’t text his ass!”

But Carpenter’s advice is a little too late. The fan then went into great detail about their relationship in what felt like a live therapy session to which the sold out crowd had to bear witness. The concertgoer chronicled how the gentleman has been stringing her along despite her wanting to dial things up a notch. She said he was “trying to find himself” before confessing that this happened months ago and she’s still been in contact with him. Carpenter seemed to offer good support.

After the clip was shared to social media, people were equally entertained by the hilarious yet heartbreaking story.

Sabrina Carpenter’s Emails I Can’t Send Tour is still underway. For more information click here.

Sorry, Everyone, But Season 2 Of ‘House Of The Dragon’ Will Be A Smidgeon Shorter Than The First

HBO helped revolutionize TV in many ways, but one of its most lasting contributions was popularizing the idea of short-ish seasons. Unlike network shows, which can still run some 25 exhausting episodes, premium and streaming shows tend to only run about 10. Who has time for more TV than that? But it looks like round two of one of their biggest new hits will go even shorter than that.

As per Deadline, when it returns for it second seasons, House of the Dragon, the first Game of Thrones spinoff out of the gate, won’t run 10 episodes, like its first. Instead it will only run eight. That’s two whole fewer hours viewers will get to spend with Daenerys Targaryen’s predictably messy ancestors.

What’s the reason for the slightly abbreviated season? Some have speculated that it’s part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s cost-cutting measures and overall chaos under new-ish head David Zaslav. Sources close to the production, though, claim it’s more story-driven. Maybe for Season 2 they don’t need to stretch things out to 10 or so hours. Besides, they’re already working on Season 3.

Production on the next Dragon season is set to start soon in the U.K. and it won’t premiere until some time in 2024. That’s a year or so (or less!) to prepare for a smidgeon less Targaryen action.

Cuck My Life Into Pieces: The ‘Driving Off Listening To Papa Roach’ Meme Made A Cameo On ‘Yellowjackets’

Bear with me, this requires some backstory.

Back in March 2015, Justin Halpern, author of Sh*t My Dad Says and now the showrunner for the animated Harley Quinn series and an Emmy-losing writer/producer on Abbott Elementary, told a story on my podcast (the Frotcast) about hooking up with a girl in college who he thought was his girlfriend, only to be disabused of this notion when her real boyfriend showed up the following morning. As Halpern feigned sleep (“I figured no one would beat up an asleep guy”) he heard the boyfriend walk in, see him on the couch, and say “Oh nice. Real f*ckin’ nice,” as the guy broke into tears.

At which point the guy stormed back outside, jumped in his car (in my head he originally said it was a Jeep Wrangler, though he claims now it was a Tacoma), hit the ignition, and sped off as the sound of Papa Roach’s “Last Resort” blared through the open windows.

As a callback to this story (easiest to find at 3:21 of our Best of 2016 Frotcast), Halpern posted a Photoshopped NY Times article about Paul Ryan, inserting a fictional bit in which Ryan drives off listening to Papa Roach. That tweet went so viral (almost certainly because lots of people didn’t instantly recognize it as a fiction like Halpern’s followers would’ve) that it spawned write ups in Mashable and the Washington Post. Papa Roach even responded.

On April 23rd, 2017, HBO aired a Silicon Valley episode which had a scene in which the fictional dickhead billionaire Russ Hanneman, played brilliantly by Chris Diamantopoulos, drives off angrily to the sounds of Papa Roach’s “Last Resort.”

Buzzfeed turned that into a trend piece, explaining “how ‘Last Resort’ became the internet’s new favorite joke song.”

That piece spoke with Halpern and Papa Roach’s Jacoby Shaddix, but never mentioned Halpern’s original story from the Frotcast, which annoyed me enough that I reached out to both sources at HBO and Papa Roach (journalism!) to confirm whether it was possible that an HBO writer could’ve heard the podcast before writing the joke into the show. Results were, as you might imagine, inconclusive.

And guess what? Now it’s back. On the season two premiere of Yellowjackets, Jeff, played by Warren Kole, rocks out to “Last Resort” in his SUV. And this time, I would argue the context is even more eerily similar to the original Frotcast story than even Silicon Valley was.

SPOILERS TO FOLLOW.

The context of the scene was that Shauna, played by Melanie Lynskey has survived a plane crash and started cheating on her husband, Jeff, with an artist. Her husband finds out, and she kills the guy, then tells Jeff, who goes to the guy’s place to help destroy all the evidence, but finds that his place is full of suggestive paintings of Shauna. Smash cut to Jeff rocking out to “Last Resort” as he tries to process this information.

As Warren Kole, who plays Jeff, explained to Variety, “He’s got a bruised ego.”

Kole also claimed that the episode was the first time he’d ever heard “Last Resort,” telling Variety “It was brand new to me. I hate it.”

Considering Warren Kole is a 45-year-old white guy from Texas, this stands out to me as one of the weirdest lies anyone has ever told, but I digress.

In both Halpern’s original story and in Yellowjackets, the Papa Roach listener is a recently cuckolded man with a bruised ego rocking out to “Last Resort” in his car. That cannot be a coincidence, can it?!?

“I’m sure it was simply a coincidence, but either way I am deeply honored to have my one true legacy furthered by a television show I greatly enjoy,” Halpern texted me when I asked him about it. “To put it succinctly; nice. Real fuckin’ nice.”

Even after my exhaustive Silicon Valley exploration went nowhere, I still have a hard time believing this was mere coincidence. But I’ll grant that maybe, just maybe, “Last Resort” has become the official pump up song of the recently cuckolded. As Kimberly Ricci wrote, “Cuck my life into pieces” indeed.

Update: As I was writing this, I received word that Papa Roach has been named “Rock Artist Of The Year” at this year’s iHeartRadio Music Awards. Congrats.

6lack’s Tough-Talking ‘Preach’ Video Perseveres Through The Elements

If 6lack’s goal with the release of his latest video was to have viewers question their existence, then the mission was accomplished. On Friday, March 24, the singer dropped his long-awaited album Since I Have A Lover. The musician has had a few singles, including the album’s title track, “Talk Back,” and “Fatal Attraction,” already receiving rave reviews, and it appears his latest is heading in the same direction.

Co-produced by Cobalii and Nik, “Preach” is a reflective song in which 6lack said in a statement is about “his ultimate decision to break from old damaging patterns.” In the accompanying video, directed by Above Ground, 6lack weathers the emotional elements. As he fights against forced isolation, he finds himself up to his leg in water as he puts out small fires around him — a metaphor for each small battle he’s had to face in this spiritual journey.

As be sings, “I gotta get my dreams back vivid; I put the weed down / But only for a week now, next week it’s back to chief style / Dreamt the whole world went up in flames / It’s been only me and ’bout five other n***** promotin’ change,” he admits that healing is a lonely journey but well worth it.

6lack’s raw honesty is one of the most endearing parts of his artistry, and fans in the comment section of the video agree. One user wrote, “The reason 6LACK has had so much success is because his music is authentic. He built a loyal fanbase through focusing on his craft, and not being pressured into sounding like other artists.”

Watch the full video above.

Since I Have A Lover is out now via LVRN and Interscope. Find more information here.
