What happens when an artist’s hand starts to shake is a lesson for us all.

This article originally appeared on 08.26.15

When Phil was in art school, he developed a shake in the worst possible place: his hand.

He thought it meant the destruction of his dream to become an artist, so he left art school and quit art altogether.

When visiting a neurologist years later, Phil learned that the shake was the result of permanent nerve damage and could not be corrected. He was right to have given up. Or so he thought. But the doctor had a different outlook on what that prognosis meant for Phil’s art. He said the seven words that Phil will never forget: “Why don’t you just embrace the shake?”

And from that day on, that’s exactly what he did. Letting his shake run free, he discovered new ways of drawing, used new materials, and completely changed his perspective on the type of art he wanted to create. When he embraced the shake, he realized he could still make art — he just had to get creative. And that’s when he learned an important lesson:

Embracing a limitation can drive creativity. A limitation just might be your liberation.

Boom. Mind blown.

In the talk, Phil goes on to give examples of how he applied that principle to his work and life, with some pretty amazing results.

No, really. They’re incredible.

But this isn’t all about Phil.

It’s about you too.

What would happen if you “embraced your shake”?

Nikola Jokic Didn’t Realize Lauri Markkanen Was Still On Stage When He Drafted Himself To Team LeBron

The NBA All-Star Draft happening just before the game provided some funny moments, as Giannis Antetokounmpo got confused over who was a starter and who was a reserve, trying to draft Ja Morant before he could. However, nothing was funnier than Nikola Jokic just drafting himself to Team LeBron at the end of the starters draft, as it seemed he was not going to allow himself to be the last pick as the defending two-time MVP.

However, that was apparently not a purposeful flex on the part of Jokic, but an honest mistake in which he got confused and thought he was the last pick, sheepishly strolling up to LeBron assuming that was a formality. Nuggets coach (and Team LeBron coach) Michael Malone explained after the game that Joker didn’t realize Markkanen, who was on the far corner of the stage, was still out there, and he apologized to the Jazz All-Star forward for showing him up.

Jokic even said afterwards that he didn’t take it as a slight, as he is “not meant for this game.”

This is actually even funnier than Jokic drafting himself as a refusal to be the last pick, as it’s a perfectly awkward moment for him to be involved with. Beyond that, it’s most likely that Markkanen was going to go to Team LeBron, as Draymond Green explained on the broadcast he expected James to go for the hometown pop.

With this ending up as the first loss in Team LeBron history — after the Lakers star got hurt jamming his finger on the rim in the first half and didn’t return — one has to wonder if James ending up with a pair of centers in his starting lineup when he wasn’t planning on it played a role in his roster’s failure to keep it competitive with Giannis. All because Jokic didn’t look far enough to his right during the Draft.

Draymond Green And Charles Barkley Got Into It Over Chuck Saying The Warriors Are ‘Cooked’

Charles Barkley and Draymond Green are two guys who have a lot of opinions on things. During Sunday night’s NBA All-Star Game, this led to some pretty sensational television, as the Inside the NBA guys have their own broadcast on the evening and had Green on as part of their coverage — Green, of course, has a contract with Turner and is expected to join the Inside team whenever his playing career comes to an end.

In the aftermath of Green pressing Ja Morant on his belief that the Memphis Grizzlies are “fine in the West,” things got a little tense between Green and Barkley over a prediction that Barkley made that the Golden State Warriors are “cooked.”

“That’s crazy,” Green said. “You said that last year, but we all know you don’t know what you talkin’ about.”

Barkley said this was false, to which Green accused him of saying this every year. Kenny Smith decided to prod, and asked Barkley why he thinks this is the case, to which Barkley said their younger players haven’t stepped up the way that he expected coming into the year, while the veteran players are getting older. He then said that Steph Curry is “starting to break down,” which really got Green upset.

“He’s starting to break down? He got hit in the knee and hurt his knee!” Green said. “He didn’t just get hurt. He also got his arm snatched back, they’re contact injuries. Thank God he don’t look like you in Houston.”

They didn’t keep this up, but our hunch is Chuck and Draymond could have argued at this for hours.

Draymond Green Pressed Ja Morant On If He’s Still ‘Fine In The West’

The 2023 NBA All-Star Game did not produce the on-court fireworks that the new Elam Ending format has given us in recent years, as Team Giannis ran away from Team LeBron in the third quarter to make the outcome all-but a moot point.

While Jayson Tatum set an All-Star scoring record with 55 points, one of the more intriguing parts of the night came in the form of a sideline interview between Draymond Green and Ja Morant on the TBS’ Inside the NBA alternate broadcast. Given the Warriors and Grizzlies have become something of a rivalry, whether players on either side want to admit it, it was interesting seeing Green in his media role taking on an interview with Morant, and Draymond couldn’t help but bring up Ja’s now infamous “I’m fine in the West” comments from earlier in the year.

Since those comments, Memphis has stumbled a bit, seeing Denver take a 5-game lead in the West race for the top seed, and with the Suns adding Kevin Durant and other teams in the West making a lot of deadline moves to improve, it was fair to ask if he still feels that way.

Ja was very much not excited about the question, but handled it like a pro, ultimately giving Draymond the soundbite he came for, saying he’s still fine in the West, albeit noting the pathway might be a touch harder. Morant notes he’s gotta be confident, but did seem to realize he’s backed himself into a corner where all he can do at this point is double down. We’ll find out in April, May, and June if he and the Grizzlies can make good on his words. I do love how much Green loved asking this question, because he knew it would make Morant just a little uncomfortable, and if he has his way, it’ll be the Warriors who get to make the Grizzlies eat their words later this season.

Charles Barkley Said Everyone In Salt Lake Is Going To Heaven Because ‘Ain’t Nothing To Do In This Boring-Ass City’

When the NBA announced Salt Lake City as the host of the 2023 All-Star Game, there were plenty who wondered how exactly the extracurriculars around the game would go, given Salt Lake’s reputation as a city without much nightlife.

Just about everyone who has been in Salt Lake has praised how All-Star has gone and how good of a job they’ve done as host, including the NBA on TNT crew, who were pleasantly surprised at how good the 2023 All-Star experience has been — Draymond Green, in particular, was shocked at how much he’s enjoyed SLC. However, after talking about how great the people of Utah have been and how much they’ve enjoyed All-Star, Charles Barkley couldn’t help but take a dig at the lack of options for debauchery in the city, joking that everyone in Salt Lake City is going to heaven because “ain’t nothing to do in this boring-ass city.”

The timing of this was hysterical, because they were literally just talking on the broadcast about how great Utah had been, and then Chuck buried the Salt Lake nightlife and Shaq got a dig in about eating more room service this week than his entire time in Los Angeles. Shaq also keeps winding Chuck up with a “where they goin’, Chuck?!” which is always my favorite thing Shaq does on Inside the NBA.

All things considered, Charles Barkley only being able to joke about the lack of places to drink and smoke is actually a pretty strong endorsement for Salt Lake’s All-Star performance this week.

The NBA Celebrated Africa’s Global Contributions With An All-Star Halftime Performance Featuring Burna Boy, Rema, And Tems

The NBA has become more and more global in the past few years, incorporating a greater volume of international players from Asia, Europe, and especially Africa. In celebration of African contributions to the league (and the league’s partnership with FIBA in creating the Basketball Africa League), the 2023 All-Star Game Halftime Show featured three of Africa’s most prominent Afrobeats/Afropop performers: Burna Boy, Rema, and Tems, who were all introduced by the Toronto Raptors’ Pascal Siakam, who is from Cameroon.

The show opened with Burna Boy, who played his hits “Anybody” and “It’s Plenty,” followed by a truly exuberant performance by Rema, who got the crowd hyped with energetic renditions of “Calm Down” and “Holiday.” Tems came out last to close things out with a huge set of her own featuring “Crazy Tings,” “Free Mind,” her verse from Wizkid’s “Essence,” and her verse from Future’s “Wait For U.”

They were all accompanied by dazzling visual effects, a dance team that incorporated both traditional and modern African dances, and a band that kept the vibe lively. And just when it appeared that things were winding up, Burna Boy returned for renditions of his megahit “Last Last.”

You can watch the performance above.

Burna Boy is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

‘The Last Of Us’ Fans Are Distraught Over The Ending Of Episode 6

“Kin” begins with one death. Does it end with another?

In the sixth episode of The Last of Us, Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) make it to Jackson, Wyoming, where the Miller brothers are back together after years apart. It’s a tense reunion, however, as Tommy (Gabriel Luna) has become a communist (literally, he lives in a commune) while Joel is bitter about the things they’ve done. He’s also still grief stricken over the death of his daughter, Sarah (Nico Parker). “Just because life stopped for you,” Tommy says, “doesn’t mean it has to stop for me.”

Meanwhile, Ellie learns about Sarah from Tommy’s wife, Maria (Rutina Wesley). She also gets a haircut and wonders why pre-breakdown-of-society girls were so obsessed with boys and clothes, but that’s neither here nor there.

During a heart to heart, Joel, who’s been suffering from panic attacks, tells Tommy about why Ellie is so important and asks him to finish the mission. Or as Ellie, who heard the whole conversation, recaps it, “I have to leave her. You have to take her.” The next morning, she’s given a choice between being transported by Joel or Tommy… Joel. Ellie picks Joel. They eventually make it to where the Fireflies are supposed to be at a university in Colorado, but they’ve moved on; all that’s left is medical equipment and monkeys. Lots and lots of monkeys. Also, raiders, one of whom stabs Joel with a knife.

Joel and Ellie escape, but when they’re free from immediate harm, Joel collapses from the horse. He’s bleeding out from the knife wound. “I can’t f*cking do this without you,” Ellie says with tears in her eyes. Is Joel dead? Those who played The Last of Us video game know the answer. Everyone else will have to wait and found out next week.

‘The Last Of Us’ Survival Odds: Wait, Is Pedro Pascal Not ‘Daddy’ Material?

Each week, we’ll recap the biggest moments of HBO’s The Last of Us before placing bets on the odds of survival for our favorite characters – like the sick, twisted, soulless monsters we are.

This week, The Last of Us returns to its regularly-scheduled programming. By that, we mean that the show is back to airing on Sunday nights, and it’s back to breaking our damn hearts.

In episode six’s “Kin,” Joel finally reunites with his brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and discovers an entirely different way of living exists outside of the Boston QZ. Joel’s “homecoming” isn’t as happy or as heroic as he thought it’d be which sends him into an anxiety spiral and drives a wedge between the old drifter and his traveling companion — threatening their mission and maybe even their lives.

On The Road

After reminding us of the heartbreaking ending to Henry and Sam’s storyline in episode five (rude), the show picks up sometime after Ellie and Joel escaped Kansas City. They’re officially out west now, having trekked across the country only to hold an elderly couple at gunpoint because neither of them can actually read a map. It’s cold, everything’s wet, and there’s a landmark called The River of Death that Ellie and Joel are warned to look out for so really, we can’t recommend trying this particular road trip post-apocalypse.

The time spent trudging through stark, snow-covered scapes does give the pair time to reflect on the tragedies that seem to be collecting in their wake. Ellie reveals she’s doubting whether she represents a cure for humanity because of her failed healing experiment with Sam and Joel gruffly reassures her that creating a vaccine will likely be more complicated than either of them can comprehend. Joel, for his part, isn’t as forthcoming with the memories that keep him up at night, brushing off his recent panic attacks in order to avoid facing their root cause.

Pedro Pascal is possibly one of the most likable actors on television at the moment, but rooting for Joel in this episode is difficult, especially when Ellie is so desperate to form some kind of connection with her guardian and he’s entirely closed off. He’s not her father, sure, but can he at least be her friend? His constant expression of annoyance at literally anything she does – whether it’s pestering him with questions or inviting him to dream up a future when the world is put right or even taking his watch without complaint when he falls asleep on the job – is grating, to say the least. There is a moment when they bond over their shared love of space heroes like Sally Ride and joke about dreaming of sheep ranches on the moon – which would make for a killer Ska band named, by the way — that gives you a glimpse of what their bond could look like if Joel would just pull his salt-and-pepper-haired head out of his ass but we’re never really given time to sit with it.

Instead, the pacing of a nine-episode series demands we must slog ahead, through some truly terrific dam puns to an old-fashioned, guns-drawn standoff between Joel and Ellie and a masked-up militia on horseback who are responsible for the natural landmark’s ominous nickname. They sick a scenting dog on Joel and Ellie to make sure neither is infected and the couple of tense moments before the growling mutt decides the young girl is “clean” sends Joel spiraling into another inner-existential crisis. Thankfully they pass the test and are welcomed by the group’s leader (it’s Tara from True Blood, y’all!) after Joel reveals just who it is they’re looking for.

Family Reunions

It turns out, Commune living is the way to go should the world ever go to hell in a handbasket. Joel’s a bit bitter when he discovers this which makes his long-awaited reunion with his brother Tommy less sweet. The two laugh and cry and hug it out, but there’s resentment bubbling beneath the surface of their “hellos” and “how are yous” that’s fairly obvious. Things only get more awkward when Tommy reveals he’s married to the woman who held Joel and Ellie at gunpoint – her name’s Maria (Rutina Wesley), she used to be a district attorney, and she’s badass – and that he’s content with his life, even if Joel hasn’t been in it. It’s a weird announcement to make over the first hot meal the duo’s had in months and a slice of PUMPKIN PIE (???) but congrats, we guess? After Maria volunteers to take Ellie to get showered and changed, the brothers have it out over some top-shelf whiskey – truly, what is this place?! – and things turn sour, fast. Joel is angry that Tommy intentionally stopped responding on the radio, choosing to protect this place rather than let his only remaining family member know he was alive and okay. Tommy’s pissed that Joel can’t be happy for him, especially when he delivers the news that Maria’s pregnant. One brother is stuck in the past, the other is trying to run away from it. It’s no one’s fault but it feels particularly unfair for Joel, who’s lost Tess and suffered so much just to find someone who didn’t want to be found. As much as Tommy loves his brother, Joel is a constant reminder of all the awful sh*t he had to do to survive. He’s the embodiment of Tommy’s regret, wearing a familiar face and biting at his heels, trying to get him to acknowledge a part of himself he’s fought against since leaving Boston. It’s sad to watch both men blow up at each other rather than face their feelings of inadequacy and guilt — but we can’t say it’s surprising.

While Joel’s experiencing a full-blown family crisis, Ellie is enjoying the creature comforts girls her age took for granted pre-outbreak. She’s had a hot shower. She’s had a haircut. She’s traded up for an eggplant Parka. She’s been gifted a complimentary Diva cup. She’s experiencing what we call “luxury” for the first time … and she’s completely unsure of how she feels about it. Maria’s attempts to bond with her and impart some wisdom re- her relationship with Joel are met with some defensive posturing and the girl’s signature snark. It’s clear Tommy’s wife doesn’t view her brother-in-law in the best light, but Ellie sticks up for her traveling companion, rightly countering that whatever terrible things Joel has done, Tommy was right there along with him doing it too. Maria leaves Ellie with some prescient advice, telling the kid “The only people who can betray us are the ones we trust.”

She thinks Joel will wrong Ellie and she’s right. The more he lets himself care about Ellie, the worse his panic attacks get. He hasn’t really dealt with the death of his daughter and that trauma is starting to grow through the cracks like emotionally invasive fungi, pushing him to self-destruct in ways that hurt the ones he cares about most. He tells Tommy the girl’s secret, asking him to take her to the Fireflies in his stead because he can’t be trusted to protect her anymore. Ellie hears some of their conversation and immediately concludes that Joel is trying to ditch her. They’re still crossing wires and not picking up on each other’s shortcomings and it all devolves into a heartbreaking argument that turns nasty when Ellie brings up Sarah and Joel affirms that she’s not his daughter and he’ll never be her dad.

Woof, even post-apocalypse, break-ups are rough.

On The Road Again

Despite Tommy agreeing to guide Ellie to the Fireflies when the pair goes to leave, Joel is waiting with a saddled horse he’s been trying to convince himself to steal all night. His reluctance to leave Ellie is sweet and when she’s given the choice, she quickly decides Joel is the better caretaker despite his bouts of crippling anxiety. The pair head to the university to meet Marlene’s group, joking with each other and ignoring any leftover tension from the night before, but they’re met with an empty base when they get to campus. Things only get worse when they go looking for signs of life – besides the escaped monkeys wandering the grounds – and discover the group has picked up and moved south. On their way out, the pair have a run-in with some scavengers and one gets the jump on Joel. They’re able to escape on horseback, but Joel’s been severely injured and the rapid blood loss causes him to fall off the horse as Ellie begs him to wake up.

That’s how the episode ends – with all of us wondering if The Last of Us is about to pull a Ned Stark with three episodes in its first season left. (We’re not irrationally worried, you are!)

Survival Odds

Tommy (4 to 1 odds)
Tommy is a joiner and that’s gotten him into some tough straits in the past but he’s gotten one hell of a lucky break by stumbling on this Communist Utopia – even if the C-word gives him the heebie-jeebies. Quit questioning your political theory beliefs and start being grateful that your wife took pity on you and gave you access to hot water, you idiot.

Maria (8 to 1 odds)
Maria has graduated from former district attorney to elected councilmember of a 300-person commune that, as Ellie marvels, “actually f*cking works” in the middle of a fungal apocalypse. Maria is going to be just fine.

Ellie (9 to 2 odds)
Terrible accuracy with a rife besides, Ellie has improved when it comes to her survival skills this season. She’s made it through a horde of Infected in Kansas City, shot a guy dead to protect Joel, stayed awake during her watch, and covered the pair with gunfire while they escaped some amateur bad guys. She’s doing pretty good for a girl who doesn’t know how dams work.

Joel (2 to 1)
Do we think this show will kill off Pedro Pascal before the finale? No. Are we sure about that? Absolutely … not. Joel has made amends with his brother, he’s finally accepted his feelings for Ellie, and he’s doing the right thing for once in his life – naturally, this would be the most tragic time for him to die. We’re begging the showrunners to not take that bait.

Nikola Jokic Drafted Himself To Team LeBron To Ensure He Wasn’t The Last Pick In The All-Star Draft

The 2023 NBA All-Star Draft was in-person, just prior to tipoff of the game on the stage in Utah, and it created for some funny moments as the players sat there on the stage waiting for LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo to call their names.

In an effort to not have someone sitting there all alone, the league had reserves get picked first and starters get picked second, but it still created a situation where someone was going to go last in the draft. As the picks wound down to the final two, it was Nikola Jokic and Lauri Markkanen left as LeBron made his fourth starters pick, and even though he had already taken Joel Embiid first, he ended up with his second center of the draft because the reigning two-time MVP walked himself over to Team LeBron before James even started to speak, refusing to end up as the last pick.

I can’t tell if LeBron was planning on taking Jokic or playing to the hometown crowd with Markkanen, because Giannis was clearly daring him to leave the man gunning for a third-straight MVP to him after Embiid went first. Instead, Jokic made the decision for him, as he wasn’t about to let himself become the final draft pick. In fairness, he shouldn’t be, and the result was a very funny interaction with LeBron, as Giannis then got the Utah crowd involved by excitedly welcoming Markkanen to his squad.

Here Are The Team LeBron And Team Giannis Rosters After The 2023 NBA All-Star Draft

The 2023 NBA All-Star Game in Salt Lake City, Utah featured a new twist on the current format of having captains draft the two All-Star teams, as rather than being on a TV special a week prior to the game, the draft took place on the court prior to tip-off. That has made for some interesting subplots in the gambling world, where books have had Team LeBron posted as three-point favorites to win despite there not even being team rosters — based solely on LeBron having never lost as a captain.

Giannis came prepared with a notebook as he had been doing his draft prep and felt very confident in his strategy coming in, while LeBron has a well-established strategy of “pick the good players.”

The reserves were picked first, as Adam Silver and the NBA wanted to avoid a “last picked” situation of someone standing by themselves at the end of the reserves picks — although, we’ll still know who that is even if they go first — and Giannis had the honors over LeBron for the first pick of the reserves. He surprised LeBron by taking Damian Lillard first over his teammate Jrue Holiday, leading LeBron to moving to Anthony Edwards as his first pick.

From there, they were off, meandering through the 22 players on the board (with a little hiccup when Giannis tried to draft Ja Morant as a reserve when he was a starter, although Giannis eventually got his man).
