Phoebe Bridgers Used Her ‘Time’ Women Of The Year 2023 Recognition To Spotlight Abortion Rights

Phoebe Bridgers spearheaded the recent reformation of Boygenius, her indie trio with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus set to release The Record at the end of this month, but Bridgers was honored for her individual poignancy as one of 12 selected as Time 2023 Women Of The Year.

The honorees are Bridgers, Cate Blanchett, Ayisha Siddiqa, Angela Bassett, Ramla Ali, Anielle Franco, Olena Shevchenko, Verónica Cruz Sánchez, Masih Alinejad, Megan Rapinoe, Makiko Ono, and Quinta Brunson.

In Bridgers’ accompanying Time capsule, she recounted a concert of hers in Florida last year where a kid and their parents left after she’d stopped mid-show to advocate for abortion rights. “I hope it makes a difference,” Bridgers told the publication of that moment. “I hope those parents are going to lose the battle with that kid’s opinions and belief systems.”

Around the time Roe v. Wade was overturned last year, Bridgers publicly shared she’d had an abortion in October 2021, adding, “Everyone deserves that kind of access.” She later elaborated on her experience and opinion with The Guardian.

And after Roe v. Wade was overturned in late June, Bridgers used her set at Glastonbury Festival to lead a “f*ck the Supreme Court” chant.

Bridgers will have plenty more opportunities to use her platform for more than just setlists while opening for a portion of Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour. “I try not to think about it that hard or I’ll freak out,” Bridgers told Time about opening for Swift.

The Eras Tour is slated to kick off March 17 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Bridgers will join on May 5 at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium and stay on as an opener for 12 shows through May 28, finishing off with three-straight nights at MetLife Stadium.

The Record is out 3/31 via Interscope Records. Find more information here.

‘F*CK THAT’: Please Add Jenna Ortega’s Passionate Defense Of Guacamole To The Meme Hall Of Fame

Jenna Ortega stopped by the latest episode of Hot Ones where the Wednesday star got very serious about guacamole, which is definitely one of the most delicious dips known to man. However, despite its simplicity, the recipe is very easy to botch, and Ortega shared her thoughts on making the perfect guac while powering through a mouth full of spicy wings with host Sean Evans.

“Whole lotta lime. You need so much lime in there and jalapeños,” Ortega said. “Just choose good avocados, but lime, yeah, lime is the answer. I hate it when they throw pico de gallo just on top like very casually, just a couple of tomatoes. It doesn’t do anything for me. Either fully submerged, really mix it in there. Do it the right way. If I don’t see any cilantro in there, disappointing instantly. And, yeah, if the avocados are too white, then you know that it’s going to be hard and they’re just not ready.”

However, things got fiery when Evans brought up one of the greatest culinary crimes in recent history, the infamous “peas in the guacamole” recipe, which Ortega was not having.

EVANS: In 2015, The New York Times published a controversial guacamole recipe. They called for a ratio of 2 to 3 cups of fresh green peas to every three avocados-

ORTEGA: F*ck that. It’s like not even controversial. That’s obviously incorrect.

Ortega’s pointed delivery of “F*ck that,” which she delivered while her mouth was on fire, is the stuff of memes. Expect to see lots of videos like the one below bouncing around in the days, and possibly years, ahead.

Wednesday Season 1 is available for streaming on Netflix.

Boygenius Debut The Unreleased Track ‘Cool About It’ In A Haunting Live Performance

Boygenius — the supergroup of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker — are getting ready to release their highly anticipated debut full-length The Record later this month. So far, singles “$20,” “Emily I’m Sorry,” “True Blue,” and “Not Strong Enough” are making the wait even harder, but luckily they’ve given fans another preview.

They debuted an unreleased track, “Cool About It,” last night (March 1) at the annual Tibet House US benefit show in New York City after being added last-minute. The performance is haunting and beautiful. Watch a clip below. They also played “Not Strong Enough.”

The Record is sure to be an emotional experience, especially considering the chaotic writing of the LP. “Lucy first sang ‘We’re In Love’ a cappella to Phoebe, in Phoebe’s bed, on New Years Day in 2022,” the press release explained. “They were holding each other’s faces: a function of totally legal drugs. Lucy was weeping and did not blink. Later, in the studio, Julien thought the song was too… long. In retrospect, Julien hadn’t been ready to engage. When the truth sank in, the truth of a love song, she went away for six hours. (Julien: ‘It’s still a learning process to know the difference between being scrutinized and being seen.’) Then she came back. She was ready.”

Watch their performance of “Not Strong Enough” above.

The Record is out 3/31 via Interscope Records. Find more information here.

Report: LeBron James Won’t Need Surgery On His Injured Foot

The Los Angeles Lakers won’t have the services of LeBron James for an indefinite period of time. James went down with a foot injury during the third quarter of L.A.’s comeback win over the Dallas Mavericks earlier this week, saying that he heard something pop. While he finished out the game, the expectation is now that James will miss multiple weeks with the injury.

It’s the worst possible thing that could happen to a Lakers team with aspirations of making a push during the stretch run of the regular season. But if there is a silver lining, it’s that James won’t need to go under the knife to remedy the situation. According to Chris Haynes on the #thisleague UNCUT podcast, James’ injury won’t require surgery, and if need be, he could “probably” play right now, even if he would be in considerable pain.

“So what I can say on LeBron is that sources did inform me that he will not require surgery, that’s good news,” Haynes said at the 32:02 mark of the pod. “And so, that’s good news for the Lakers. Right now, it’s all about time and the rehabbing process. This is why it’s a crucial period: The Lakers have to really do what they can to buy him some time. What I mean by that is they gotta win, they gotta win a chunk of games, move up these standings to keep buying LeBron some time. That’s what it’s gonna take during this process.

“Could LeBron get out there and play right now? It’d be a risk, but I think he probably could, if he necessarily had to,” he continued. “But it’s too much of a risk, it’s too much pain right now. The plan right now is to give him as much time as heal for this rehab process, but the Lakers gotta win.”

Los Angeles is 30-33 and sit in 13th place in the Western Conference, a full game back of the New Orleans Pelicans for the 12-seed and the final play-in spot.

Indie Mixtape 20: LANNDS’s Debut LP Is Shapeshifting Psych Pop

LANNDS are soaring to new heights. The psych pop duo, composed of LA-based vocalist-guitarist Rania Woodard and multi-instrumentalist Brian Squillace, are gearing up for the release of their debut LP after years of dropping one off projects and singles. Music For The Future, out Friday on Run For Cover, combines Woodward’s angelic vocals with bright percussive elements harkening back to the likes of aughts indie pop mainstays like Neon Indian and Cut Copy.

On Music For The Future, sparkling chords, airy melodies, and gritty beats are juxtaposed to create irresistible, dance-ready anthems. With tracks like “K Town” and “Vega,” LANNDS manage to make blown out earworms — all while taking a DIY approach. Each song on Music For The Future was entirely produced and engineered by the duo themselves. “When we do it ourselves, even if it’s a little more ‘home done’ sounding, it’s just more us,” Squillace says.

Ahead of the release of Music For The Future, LANNDS sat down with Uproxx to talk Green Day, mac and cheese, and Connect Four in our latest Q&A.

Woodard: My mom’s mac and cheese.

What album do you know every word to?

Squillace: Green Day’s Dookie.

What’s the story behind your first or favorite tattoo?

Woodard: In 2017 I got drunk at John Shannon’s house, and Jesse Brantman gave me my first stick and poke tattoo. It’s a pizza triangle.

What artists keep you from flipping the channel on the radio?

Squillace: If you mean hitting the skip button on Spotify That artist would be Fred Again..

What’s the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you?

Woodard: I had friends come together and help me furnish my first LA apartment. They all pitched in money so I could by furniture.

What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?

Mayim Bialik Did Not Know How To Respond To A ‘Jeopardy!’ Contestant’s ‘Obsolete’ Hobby

You have to be really smart to get on Jeopardy, obviously, because they don’t just let anyone walk on set and make educated guesses (though they do allow that sometimes). The latest crop of contestants is actually former high school champions who are returning in their old age to battle it out as college contestants.

Audrey Satchivi, a senior at Indiana University, decided to share her interesting hobby when prompted by host Mayim Bialik. “Yeah, so I’m kind of an old soul,” the contestant explained. “I’ve been collecting some things that are kind of obsolete now.” You’ll never guess what she said next!

Satchivi continued, “I’ve been collecting records, CDs, and DVDs. I just got a new DVD, and I’m really excited about it, but I miss my childhood a little bit I guess,” she said. Satchivi might not realize these items are less obsolete than expected, as vinyl sales have increased significantly over the last two decades. Considering the fact that Satchivi was not even alive back then, it makes sense that it seems like a foreign concept.

Of course, Bialik didn’t really know how to react to that, adding an “alright” before moving on. Sometimes, that’s all you can do.

Still, Satchivi ended up taking home $5,000 after Tuesday’s episode, which is equal to about 250 or so CDs, which will be a nice addition to her growing collection of obsolete items. Maybe she could consider adding Blu-Ray into the mix! Those might actually be retro in the coming years.

Pat Sajak Had To Re-Explain The ‘Wheel’ Rules To An Overly-Excited Contestant

It’s normal to get excited when there are quite literally a million dollars on the line, but it seems like Pat Sajak has become a little too accustomed to being around giant sums of money.

After a contestant on Wheel of Fortune almost yanked that coveted million-dollar tile before making her guess, Sajak had to take a minute to remind her of the rules, as he has to do occasionally. “No, no, no, ba-ba-bo-bop,” Sajak blurted out, before providing the very important rules for the game that has been on for nearly 50 years. “Now, here’s what you do. You see, you call a letter,” this might seem obvious, but when there is a sparking green dollar sign in front of you, something you cannot control yourself.

Luckily, the contestant guessed a letter that happened to be in the puzzle, so she was able to grab the tile, but not before Sajak exclaimed, “You put a million dollars in front of someone they just get goofy.” This would make sense since Pat is just a goofy guy all around, and he’s surrounded by millions every night!

It’s Pat’s world, we’re all just living in it. But we might not be living in it long, as Sajak has expressed interest in ending the landmark show soon. Last fall, he told Entertainment Tonight that he might be throwing in the vowel towel soon. “We’re getting near the end. It’s been a long [time]. We’re not gonna do this for another 40 years. The end is near.” Perhaps he should really take this time to embrace all of the quirky contestants before it’s too late.

Kim Petras Excitedly Showered ‘Queen’ Lana Del Rey With Compliments At ‘Billboard’ Women In Music 2023

Lana Del Rey attended Billboard‘s Women In Music 2023 awards show in Los Angeles last night, March 1, where she accepted the Visionary Award from Olivia Rodrigo. On the red carpet, Del Rey teased an almost inevitable collaboration with Billie Eilish at some point in the future and expressed optimism about the present state of music.

“I’m really so excited for where music is at,” she told Billboard reporters Lyndsey Havens and Rania Aniftos. “Madison Beer, Olivia Rodrigo, I mean, Billie Eilish is my love. I just feel such a lovely — I don’t know. Like, these are my people. It’s so interesting to be in a room of people where you can actually — for the first time, for me — wave to everybody. I feel like, in a way, all the little sounds I wanted to hear on the radio, they’ve caught up to this moment.”

Kim Petras, who performed “Brrr” and became the first-ever trans woman honored at the event as the Chartbreaker Award winner, used the opportunity to do more than just wave at Del Rey.

Billboard posted an endearing clip of Petras and Del Rey backstage.

“Like, literally, all the cool people anywhere only listen to you,” an animated Petras told Del Rey, as Del Rey humbly laughed off the compliment before giving her a hug. “Literally, anyone you want to hang out with, you’re their queen. That’s what you want in life! Any cool artist, too. You’re their f*cking queen, and you should know.”

All of those cool people will soon be able to exclusively listen to Del Rey’s ninth studio album, Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Ocean Blvd. In the meantime, they could settle for “Setting Sail On A Distant Horizon” by her dad, Rob Grant, ahead of his newly announced forthcoming album, Lost At Sea.

Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Ocean Blvd is out 3/24 via Interscope/Polydor. Pre-save it here.

The Grim Grinning Ghosts Are Out To Socialize In Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ Teaser Trailer

Some movies based on Disneyland / Disney World attractions are better (the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie) than others (the rest of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies). 2003’s Eddie Murphy-starring The Haunted Mansion, based on the top-five Disney ride, falls somewhere in the middle. It’s… fine? Hopefully the next Haunted Mansion movie is better, however.

The “next” Haunted Mansion movie, you say? I do say. It stars Rosario Dawson, LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Tiffany Haddish, Winona Ryder, Dan Levy, Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis (as Madame Leota), Chase Dillon, Jared Leto (as the Hatbox Ghost), and hopefully the voice of Paul Frees. It wouldn’t be the Haunted Mansion without an introduction from the Ghost Host.

You can watch the teaser trailer above.

“As a lifelong fan of the Haunted Mansion attraction, I’m beyond excited to share the teaser trailer for our new film adaptation featuring an incredible cast,” director Justin Simien said. “Our team has worked tirelessly to create a scary, funny and cinematic otherworldly adventure for both new and die-hard fans to enjoy! I can’t wait for audiences to experience this big screen version of the iconic Disney attraction.” Here’s more:

Inspired by the classic theme park attraction, “Haunted Mansion” is about a woman and her son who enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters.

Haunted Mansion comes out during the spookiest time of the year: LATE JULY.

Vladimir Putin’s Greatest Fear Is Reportedly Not Angering The Russian People Over His Disastrous War But Over A Certain Veggie

Vladimir Putin crossed the one-year point in his disastrous Ukraine war by pulling out of a nuclear pact and sending his talking heads onto Russian State TV to suggest going Lex Luthor on the U.S. He’s angry about the U.S. not worshipping him, and worried about assassination, but reportedly, Putin’s biggest cause for stressing over losing power isn’t military conflict but… the possibility of Russia running out of cabbages?

Apparently so. First the Botox (his fave) began to disappear, and the Viagra supply diminished. Also, Russia lost McDonald’s and put up a very sorry imitation, but Putin reportedly (according to digging from The Daily Beast) fears losing cabbage most. That’s because the cardboard-like-but-resilient veggie has always been there for the Russian people through the worst circumstances. So if cabbage supplies run dry, then you know the Russian sh*t has really hit the fan. Rock bottom, in other words, for the Putin presidency.

The Daily Beast has spoken to sources who claim that there is “videotape” and “lots of it” that shows Putin freaking out over cabbage rations:

Putin’s greatest fear is food; specifically, not enough of it to feed Russia’s 143 million people. Despite bumper harvests, the hair-trigger on Putin’s nightmare is abundantly clear in the black-and-white newsreels of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, when another Russian imperium was in large part toppled for its failure to put food on the table.

The Daily Beast has written extensively on this subject, and it’s a report worth reading because, hopefully, this alleged footage shall surface. It could do even more damage than Russian soldiers being told to bring tampons from home because there will be no other way to treat their own bullet wounds on the battle field. Meanwhile, CNN has published video of Russian soldiers begging Putin to help them while they watch their comrades die in droves. It’s grim stuff, and he’s worried about cabbage.
