George Santos, Who Is Under A Mess Of Investigations, Seriously Complained On The House Floor About A ‘Major Uptick In Crime’

On Tuesday, George Santos did the right thing: He stepped down from two House committees to which he’d been assigned. Why? Because he’s the subject of a slew of investigations into his campaign and personal finances. And yet hours later he was on the House floor, complaining about a “major uptick in crime” happening in his district.

“I rise today to honor the brave men and women of the Nassau County Police Department,” said Santos, who’s being investigated at both the federal and state level. “Last week the Nassau P.D. arrested eight men in New York’s third congressional district who are said to be part of an organized theft group from South America. While I’m grateful for their ongoing commitment to preventing these acts of violence, but [sic] for suburban New Yorkers in New York’s third congressional district, we are seeing a major uptick in crime.”

Santos — who has been accused of misleading voters by lying about, well, almost everything, and whose campaign finances are a hot mess — complaining about a rise in crime inspired a ton of jokes.

When Santos is done looking into organized crime in his district, maybe he can go after the guy who allegedly received donations from people who don’t even exist.

This company makes it easier than ever to enjoy guilt-free fairly traded coffee

Americans love coffee. Like, we really, seriously, truly love it. According to one recent survey, 75 percent of U.S. adults drink coffee at least occasionally, while 53 percent—about 110 million people—drink it every single day. For some, coffee is an essential part of their morning ritual. For others, it’s something they enjoy when they hit the proverbial wall in the late afternoon. But either way, millions of people use coffee to boost energy, focus, and productivity.

Unfortunately, like most good things in life, coffee can have a downside. For example, most mass-marketed coffee is pretty terrible for the environment and the local farming communities that produce it. Most mass-marketed coffee also has a negative impact on your physical health. And half the time, it doesn’t even taste that good.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Coffee can be better. And over the last few years, progressive companies like Lifeboost Coffee have been working hard to transform the coffee industry, making better-tasting coffee that’s good for the planet and the people who drink it.

If you’re a coffee lover looking for a healthier, more sustainable way to get your fix, then you need to keep reading.

Why Better Coffee Matters

People love coffee because it tastes good and wards off drowsiness. But most coffee is also pretty acidic. And over time, this acidity can take a toll on your health, aggravating conditions like acid reflux, gastric ulcers, and irritable bowel syndrome, and causing dental problems such as enamel erosion and tooth sensitivity.

But as bad as some coffee can be for you, it can be even worse for the environment and the people who grow it. Mass-produced coffee wastes tons of fresh water, creates tons of pollution, and destroys untold acres of the planet’s most densely populated rainforest ecosystems. On top of all that, the people who grow the beans don’t get paid very well, which causes poverty and other numerous social problems in coffee-growing communities around the world.

Want to do your part to make the coffee industry better? Then consider getting your coffee from companies like Lifeboost Coffee, which was specifically founded to create a delicious coffee that is good for everybody—good for you, good for the planet, and good for the people who produce it.

Say Hello To Lifeboost

Lifeboost Coffee only uses beans that are certified USDA organic, non-GMO, and third-party tested for harmful fungi and over 400 other toxins. They also use a roasting process that produces low-acid coffee that’s easier on your teeth and stomach. And because beans are only harvested when fully mature, Lifeboost coffee always contains maximum amounts of beneficial minerals and antioxidants.

On the environmental side, Lifeboost Coffee only uses shade-grown beans produced by single-origin farms that use sustainable farming practices. The company also donates a percentage of its profits to protect the ecosystems, habitats, and wildlife in their coffee regions. Meanwhile, on the human side, all Lifeboost coffees are certified fairly traded. That means the farmers who produce the beans get fair wages so they can support their families and build stronger communities.

Subscribe And Save

Whether you’re looking for ground or whole bean, light roast or dark roast, flavored or unflavored, regular or decaf, Lifeboost Coffee has a wide variety of delicious coffee. And while you can save money by buying more than one bag at a time, you can save even more with a coffee subscription.

Worried you won’t actually use all the coffee you get when you subscribe? Don’t be. With a Lifeboost subscription, you can choose how much coffee you get and how often you get it. So whether you want six bags every two weeks or two bags every six weeks, with a Lifeboost subscription, you get precisely the amount of coffee you want. And can cancel or tweak your subscription anytime, no questions asked.

If you’re looking for small things you can do to make the world a better place, drinking healthier, more sustainable coffee is a good place to start. And right now, nobody makes healthy, sustainable coffee better than Lifeboost. So click here and up your coffee game today.

Death Cab For Cutie Announce ‘Asphalt Meadows (Acoustic)’ And Unveil A Tribute To Low’s Mimi Parker

Death Cab For Cutie unveiled Asphalt Meadows last year after compelling singles and vibrant late-night television performances. They’ll be heading on a highly anticipated tour with the also Ben Gibbard-fronted band The Postal Service later this year. Today, they’re back with more news.

An acoustic version of Asphalt Meadows is on the way, arriving this spring. It will include a cover of Low’s “The Plan” in honor of late drummer Mimi Parker who tragically passed away last year. About the tribute, Gibbard shared a heartfelt statement. Read it below.

“I first saw Low in 1994 opening for Sunny Day Real Estate at the OK Hotel in Seattle. Since then they’ve been one of the most influential and important bands of my life. It was the fulfillment of my teenage self’s indie rock dream when our bands became friends while on tour together in 2012.

We were incredibly saddened by Mimi’s passing this past November. She was an incredible artist and an even better human being.

We believe the best way to remember the musicians we lose is to play their songs. ‘The Plan’ has always been one of our favorite Low songs and is presented here in tribute to Mimi.”

“Pepper” acoustic is out now as well. Listen to “The Plan” cover above and “Pepper” below.

The acoustic version of Asphalt Meadows arrives 3/10 via Atlantic. Pre-order it here.

Death Cab For Cutie is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

‘Westworld,’ ‘FBoy Island,’ And A Bunch Of Other Shows Jettisoned From HBO Max Have New Homes

Things are awfully weird with streamers these days. Even one of the best ones, HBO Max, is in pure chaos. Along with cancelling nearly finished movies and deep-sixing hundreds of Looney Tunes classics, they also jettisoned a bunch of their original shows, among them Westworld, FBoy Island, and The Nevers. Where would they go next? Could they find a new home? Well, now we have an answer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, more than 225 shows and movies from Warner Bros. Discovery are heading to Tubi, the ad-supported streamer. In February, their coffers will be filled with not only the aforementioned trio but also Raised by Wolves, Legendary, Finding Magic Mike, Head of the Class, and The Time Traveler’s Wife.

Roku cut a similar deal with WBD, licensing some 2,000 hours from their library, which includes Westworld and FBoy Island as well as The Bachelor, Cake Boss, and Say Yes to the Dress.

Not ever jettisoned title found a new home. Among those still lurking in the streaming ether are The Gordita Chronicles, Love Life, Minx, and Made for Love.

Among the controversial moves made by WBD’s newish honcho David Zazlav was to remove key titles from HBO Max — titles that may have caused subscribers to sign up in the first place — and make money off of licensing them elsewhere. The good news is that many of these will be available, and for free. The bad news is you’ll have to sit through a lot of ads if you want to binge the four seasons of the newly-ish cancelled Westworld.

Alec Baldwin Was Allegedly ‘Distracted’ During ‘Rust’ Firearm Training, According To The Formal Charges Against Him And The Film’s Armorer

Over a year and three months after the tragic Rust shooting, Alec Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed were formally charged in conjunction with the fatal accident that occurred on the set of the Western. A statement released by the Santa Fe, New Mexico district attorney’s office also revealed new claims about what happened, including that Baldwin — who inadvertently killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza – did not take firearm training seriously.

As per CNN, Baldwin, who produced and acted in the film, and Gutierrez Reed were charged with involuntary manslaughter counts. Both have been accused of failing to perform safety procedures that could have prevented the accidental shooting with a prop gun that appears to have housed live ammunition. In Baldwin’s case, prosecutors have accused him of not taking safety training seriously:

“A training session for at least an hour or more in length was scheduled, but the actual training consisted of only approximately 30 minutes as according to (armorer Hannah Gutierrez) Reed, Baldwin was distracted and talking on his cell phone to his family during the training.”

As for Gutierrez Reed, prosecutors say that she didn’t insist on Baldwin taking the training session, didn’t check each round as they were loaded into the firearms, and didn’t follow safety protocols when storing the ammunition:

“Gutierrez Reed was reckless in her responsibility to ensure set safety with the firearm. She failed to correct Baldwin from committing the dangerous and reckless safety violations by pointing the weapon at/towards people and by having his finger on the trigger.”

What’s more, photos and videos show Baldwin repeatedly holding the gun “with his finger inside of the trigger guard and on the trigger, while manipulating the hammer and while drawing, pointing, and holstering the revolver,” according to prosecutors.

Ever since the incident, Baldwin has maintained his innocence, even claiming he didn’t pull the trigger. He also sued some of the film’s crew members. On Jan. 19, when the prosecutors’ charges were announced, Baldwin’s attorney put out a statement calling it “a terrible miscarriage of justice.” An attorney for Guiterrez Reed said they expected a jury to find her innocent and that she “has committed no crime.”

Baldwin and Gutierrez weren’t the only ones charged with crimes. The film’s assistant director David Halls was also charged with negligent use of a deadly weapon, though he has pleaded no contest and entered into a plea agreement that is “pending approval,” as per the D.A.’s office.

Fall Out Boy — “Heartbreak Feels So Good”

Fall Out Boy’s comeback song “Love From The Other Side” was a blazing return, and this new single “Heartbreak Feels So Good” keeps up the momentum. It’s a catchy heartbreak anthem with call-to-action lyrics that are incredibly convincing against such vivacious guitars: “You know it’s heartbreak / We could dance our tears away / Emancipate ourselves / We’ll cry later or cry now but baby,” Patrick Stump sings.

Blondshell — “Joiner”

Blondshell finally announced her debut self-titled album after a string of addictive singles. “Joiner” is as vibrant as the rest, capturing the tension that a lot of her songs contain: “I think I wanna save you / I think I wanna join in,” she sings against breezy guitars.

Samia — Honey

The singles from Samia’s sophomore album Honey were immediately bewitching, from the powerfully vulnerable “Sea Lions” to the totally unfiltered “Kill Her Freak Out.” The whole record watches the singer/songwriter stepping into the most confessional version of herself as possible. The vignettes are endearing; it’s particularly relatable on the title track, when she sings about going to a Porches show in Brooklyn after a long week.

White Reaper — Asking For A Ride

White Reaper have always shredded but their new album Asking For A Ride takes things to another level. Every song is a part of the blazing, relentless journey. In our interview with them about the record, they said that what they learned in the making of it was “to persevere.” And the tracks do exactly that — persisting with righteousness and abandon.

Ben Gibbard — “Frightening Fishes (Main Title Theme)”

Ben Gibbard has been up to a lot — from releasing the new Death Cab For cutie album Asphalt Meadows last year to announcing this year’s DCFC tour with The Postal Service. Apparently he’s not done; he made the theme song for the Apple TV+ series Shrinking. “Frightening Fishes (Main Title Theme)” is a sparkling ballad with lyrics that balance pain with hope: “Let the wreckage all sink to where the fishes are frightening / I wanna hear myself think again,” he sings.

Buzzy Lee — “Cinberblock”

You can’t go wrong with a music video full of puppies. It only enhances the appeal of Buzzy Lee’s new song “Cinberblock,” a relaxed, mesmerizing ballad that highlights the power of her delicate vocals. “In the beginning / You were my end / That’s when the sidewalk started cracking / Darkness came in,” she sings mysteriously.

Yours Are The Only Ears — “Dreamer”

“‘Dreamer’ is about waking up to the realization that you need to move on from a painful relationship,” Susannah Cutler explained about her new song as her project Yours Are The Only Ears. Though grappling with difficult topics, the track is easy to listen to, buoyed by soft guitars and her thoughtful vocals.

Fever Ray — “Kandy”

Fever Ray are preparing for the release of their new album Radical Romantics, their first in over five years. The singles have all been compelling and the newest one, “Kandy,” is no exception. The track is eerie and atmospheric, plunging the listener into their dark yet soothing world of sounds.

P.E. — “Branding Crisis”

With “Branding Crisis,” P.E. take their time to make any noise at all. It comes from their 100% improvised NOPE Tapes Vol 1 arriving next month. It was recorded in Brooklyn and “Branding Crisis” is a dreamy, immersive taste. It warps and twists as if tangible; the sounds are up to interpretation by the listener, making them a part of the process.

King Tuff — “How I Love”

King Tuff’s new track “How I Love” is a laid-back, ruminative ballad with gentle guitars and introspective lyrics: “Gets a little bit lonesome / Out here in the endless void,” he sings, but the mood is optimistic, bringing the listener into its infectious, easygoing atmosphere.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
