Dewayne Dedmon Got Ejected For Launching A Massage Gun Onto The Court

The Miami Heat hosted the Oklahoma City Thunder for a cross-conference game on Tuesday evening. For the most part, the first half went fairly well for the Heat, and Miami held a five-point lead when a timeout was called with 9:25 remaining in the second quarter.

After the timeout, veteran big man Dewayne Dedmon was removed from the game in favor of Orlando Robinson, and just seconds later, a massage gun was launched onto the court during live play, prompting a stoppage. The eventual reality that Dedmon caused the issue and was ejected from the game.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Dedmon really was aiming to send the massage gun onto the floor — if anything, it looks like he smacked it and unintentionally turned it into a projectile — but video captured him clearly upset enough to express that frustration. Later, the TNT broadcast showed that Dedmon and Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra had an exchange in the huddle during the timeout.

Dedmon, a ten-year veteran, has been in and out of Miami’s rotation this season, and he returned to the mix on Tuesday after a DNP on Sunday in a one-point loss to Brooklyn. Perhaps part of his frustration could be tied to that inconsistent deployment but, regardless, this isn’t something you see every day and Spoelstra didn’t exactly seem thrilled with the technical foul and ejection that resulted.

Jerrod Carmichael Immediately Acknowledged The Elephant In The Room During His 2023 Golden Globes Monologue

“I’ll tell you why I’m here. I’m here because I’m Black.”

Jerrod Carmichael filled the Beverly Hilton ballroom with nervous laughter during the 2023 Golden Globes, the first televised ceremony since the Los Angeles Times reported on the lack of diversity in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

“I’ll catch everyone in the room up,” Carmichael (who has a new standup special) said. “The Golden Globe Awards did not air last year because the HFPA, which, I won’t say they were a racist organization, but they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died. So, do with that information what you will
”

Carmichael, who took turns sitting and standing during the monologue, then discussed the process behind taking the job. “I was at home, drinking tea, when I got a phone call from my man [Golden Globes producer] Stephen Hill. He said, ‘Jerrod, I’m producing the 80th Golden Globes and it would be an honor if you would agree to be the host.’ I was like, ‘Whoa.’ One minute you’re making mint tea at home, and next you’re invited to be the Black face of an embattled white organization. Life comes at you fast!”

You can watch the monologue below.

All Of The Winners From The 2023 Golden Globes So Far

The Golden Globes are back? Technically, that’s the case, given that the broadcast (which usually signifies the true beginning of awards season) took a hiatus from being on the air due to a number of controversies. Those are best not dwelled upon tonight because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is doing their whole customary sit-down dinner (and booze), but hopefully, some champagne speeches will happen.

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host, and Brendan Fraser made clear that he won’t be on the scene (due to one of those controversies) despite his nomination for The Whale. Some oddness: Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is actually up for several awards, and Succession isn’t eligible this year. Meanwhile, Paddy Considine got robbed for a House of the Dragon nod. The show still earned a Best Drama nomination, but fingers are crossed for The Bear on the Best Comedy and Lead Actor front.

It Looks Like Boygenius (Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker) Are Reuniting This Year

In November of 2021, Boygenius — the supergroup of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker — reunited for a one-off show at the Bread & Roses Presents Fall Benefit Concert in San Francisco. Earlier that year, Dacus said in an interview, “We want to play together again so bad. I think we’re so busy, but we would take any excuse, we miss each other so much.”

Now, it looks like they’ll be fulfilling those needs. They’re returning this year to perform at Coachella on Saturday, April 15 and 22, the days Blackpink are headlining. Other notable acts on the roster for those days include Rosalía, Snail Mail, Remi Wolf, Flo Milli, Horsegirl, The Linda Lindas, Kenny Beats, Yung Lean, and more.

News of the Boygenius performance follows online chatter about the trio getting caught taking a photoshoot in the street, which sparked conversations about a possible new era together. It’s been a while since their self-titled debut EP; it arrived in 2018 and immediately struck a chord with fans of each artist, and definitely brought in new listeners.

This year’s Coachella is also bringing Jai Paul out of hiding; his performance will be his first-ever live show. Likewise, Frank Ocean’s headlining slot has been long-awaited after past cancellations.

Fans Of Netflix’s ‘Warrior Nun’ Are Imploring Kelly Clarkson To Help Them ‘Save’ The Show, For Some Reason

Perhaps one of the strangest trending topics on Twitter of the year so far happened today: “KELLY SAVE WARRIOR NUN,” alongside “Please KELLY SAVE OUR NUNS.” For context, this follows the cancellation of the show Warrior Nun. Fans are apparently bringing singer Kelly Clarkson into this because of her talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Fans of the fantasy drama want Clarkson to bring its cast on her talk show, and they’re not relenting. “hello @kellyclarkson @KellyClarksonTV,” one fan wrote in a tweet that quickly caught traction. “we made this phase for you we worldwide trend help us save the show and maybe have our beloved cast alba and kty in your amazing show will be much appreciated!! #savewarriornun KELLY SAVE OUR NUNS, reply with the [phrase] COME ON!!”

The tweets are plentiful and the memes creative. The fans are truly not messing around with this campaign and it’s unlikely they’ll stop soon. Whether or not Clarkson will respond to the clamor is still unknown. She recently made headlines for her stunning cover of Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away.” This new situation is definitely not what she would have expected to make headlines for, but at least it’s got her trending.

One Of Ke Huy Quan’s Fellow Goonies Is Now Also The Lawyer Who Helped Him Ink His ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ Deal

Child actors don’t necessarily stay actors forever. Take Ke Huy Quan. As a kid he appeared in both Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, as plucky sidekick Short Round, and in The Goonies. As work dried up, he went to film school and rebranded as a stunt coordinator and assistant director. Now he’s an actor again and he earned raves — and awards — as Michelle Yeoh’s sweetly dorky husband in Everything Everywhere All at Once. But he was only able to do it with some help from a fellow Goonie who hasn’t gone back to acting.

In a roundtable interview for The Hollywood Reporter (in a bit caught by The AV Club), Quan revealed that he was able to ink the Everything Everywhere deal with his lawyer, Jeff Cohen. The name might not sound familiar, but nearly four decades ago he co-starred with Quan in The Goonies. He played Chunk, the portly kid prone to screaming and who befriends Sloth (the late John Matuszak), the deformed son of Anne Ramsey’s dastardly Mama Fratelli.

Like Quan, as he got older, Cohen stayed in the industry. He just moved to a different part of it: He became an entertainment lawyer. His talent came in handy when Quan was being courted for his comeback role.

“When the producer of our movie was trying to make my deal, he said he never imagined that he’d have to talk to Chunk and Data for his movie,” referring to the roles he and Cohen played some 38 years ago. When asked if Cohen got him a good deal, Quan responded, “Jeff is an outstanding lawyer.”

So, good for Quan and good for Cohen, who stayed in touch and teamed up to bring one of the best performances of last year to the screen. Keep in touch with your childhood pals, including the ones you work with. You might help each other one day.

Stephanie McMahon Announced Her Resignation From WWE

Days after her father returned to the WWE, Stephanie McMahon has given her resignation, she announced on Tuesday on Twitter.

In July, McMahon and Nick Khan stepped into co-CEO positions following the ousting of Vince McMahon amidst allegations of misconduct, millions of dollars in reported settlements, and investigations into other nondisclosure agreements. Stephanie also assumed the role of Chairwoman. The latest move removes Stephanie from the business side of the company altogether, acknowledging Vince McMahon as the Executive Chair who is “leading the exciting process regarding strategic alternatives.”

As part of Stephanie McMahon’s statement, she also pointed to Nick Khan’s “leadership” and that Paul Levesque will remain Chief Content Officer.

Vince McMahon has started the process of selling WWE with his official return to the company last Friday, where he elected himself to WWE’s board of directors, along with former co-presidents and directors Michelle Wilson and George Barrios. The move came one day after it was reported from the Wall Street Journal that “unless (McMahon) has direct involvement as executive chairman from the outset of a strategic review, he won’t support or approve any media-rights deal or sale.” The move essentially holds WWE from negotiating television deals for its flagship programs, Raw or Smackdown, as well as his apparent goal of selling the company unless he is directly involved.

According to PWInsider, Vince McMahon’s return could spark a lawsuit from the board. But that possibility of that apparently wasn’t enough to keep Stephanie McMahon around.

Indie music has grown to include so much. It’s not just music that is released on independent labels but speaks to an aesthetic that deviates from the norm and follows its own weirdo heart. It can come in the form of rock music, pop, or folk. In a sense, it says as much about the people that are drawn to it as it does about the people that make it.

Every week, Uproxx is rounding up the best new indie music from the past seven days. This week we got new music from White Reaper, Mount Eerie, Belle And Sebastian, Runnner, and more.

Nicole Dollanganger — Married In Mount Airy

Nicole Dollanganger’s music never seems to lose its power. Married In Mount Airy successfully haunts and endears its listener, with her striking, high-pitched voice feeling hypnotic against sparkling sonic backgrounds. Each song feels like an intense scene from a movie.

White Reaper — “Pink Slip”

White Reaper’s mischievous Asking For A Ride arrives at the end of this month, and each single has been a fiery treat. “Pink Slip” is no less catchy and intense than the previous singles; the riffs are heavy and infectious with the texture of recklessness is at an all-time high. The energy is contagious and the LP is sure to be a rollercoaster.

Mount Eerie — “Huge Fire”

On the Colors compilation album, “Huge Fire” by Mount Eerie is a haunting song with a powerful atmosphere of grief. It’s packed with vivid, cinematic lyricism: “I carry it into the night / I walk, and there’s a fire, but it’s at my back,” Phil Elverum sings.

The Hold Steady — “Sideways Skull”

“Sideways Skull” is the compelling first single from The Hold Steady’s just-announced new album The Price of Progress arriving in March. It kicks off strong: “She ordered me Newcastle / And handed me a Marlboro,” frontman Craig Finn sings against snarky riffs.

Runnner — “NYE”

Runnner’s Like Dying Stars, We’re Reaching Out is set to be one of the most subtly devastating albums of 2023. Similar to Elverum, Noah Weinman’s songs reckon with wreckage: “New Year’s Eve at home recording / Thinking: ‘how’d I get so boring?’ / And how I miss my friends, my loves / Am I choosing what’s important?” he sings on “NYE.”

Black Belt Eagle Scout — “Nobody”

A pink sunset glows in the video for Black Belt Eagle Scout’s transcendent new song “Nobody,” and it looks as comforting and evocative as the music is. The guitars soar and Katherine Paul’s breathy vocals are poignant as she sings poetic lines: “Yeah I feel it in my bones / And I find it through my home.”

Belle And Sebastian — “I Don’t Know What You See In Me”

Belle And Sebastian didn’t hold back on their exuberant new song “I Don’t Know What You See In Me.” It’s a big, buzzing anthem fueled by determination and refusal to relent: “I don’t know what you see in me / But I know I’m not about to give you up.”

Faim — “Opus”

Is there a better way to start the year than with an abrasive, clamoring hardcore song? “Opus” by Faim abides by no rules, moving to its own (incredibly fast) pace. It’s cathartic, only intensifying as it goes on. Also, there are two vocalists yelling together, making them a powerful force.

Bratty — “Continental”

“Continental” by Bratty is a breezy track. She teamed up with Nsqk and MĂ©ne, and the song bounces with a feel-good vibe, reminiscent of the summer. Still, it hits in the winter and only helps us look forward to days of sunshine and dancing.

The New Pornographers — “Really Really Light”

The New Pornographers just announced their ninth studio album Continue As A Guest arriving in March. “Really Really Light” is the first single as well as the opening track. Off the bat, it’s a noisy, jangly song full of memorable melodies and entrancing harmonies. It’s a promising preview.

Jai Paul’s Coachella Performance Will Be His First Live Show Ever

This year’s Coachella lineup is nothing short of historic. Bad Bunny is the first Latin act to headline the festival; Blackpink is the first girl group and K-pop act to headline. On top of all that, it’s Frank Ocean’s first show in a while and his Coachella performance has been long-awaited.

What’s more, Jai Paul is performing his first live show ever. The 34-year-old songwriter and producer is known for his enigmatic nature. Fellow Coachella performer Kaytranda expressed enthusiasm on Twitter: “forget about me performing, i’m going to see Jai Paul.”

Paul returned in 2019 with his first material since his debut album leak in 2013. “I wanted to use this opportunity to share a little information about what happened regarding my music in April 2013,” he wrote at the time. “As you may know, some of my unfinished demos were put up for sale illegally via Bandcamp. The leak consisted of a fairly random collection of tracks I had made over quite a long period of time (from roughly 2007 to 2013), in various stages of completion. Some are short skits and beats from my MySpace page back in the day before I signed a record deal. A large proportion of this music was to be completed and released officially in some format.”

He’ll be performing Sunday, April 16 and 23, the same days as Ocean.

Jerry Jones On Whether An Early Playoff Exit Would Cost Mike McCarthy His Job: ‘No’

The Dallas Cowboys visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. The Cowboys have won 12 games in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1995 under head coach Mike McCarthy, who was hired in 2020 to bring playoff success to the franchise after Jason Garrett’s tenure frequently ended with the team getting eliminated earlier than expected. Although McCarthy has provided regular season success, and even an NFC East championship in 2021, he has yet to secure a playoff win — Dallas hosted the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card round last season, but suffered an embarrassing loss by running the clock out on a quarterback draw.

Firing a coach after consecutive 12-win seasons seems counterintuitive, but the Cowboys limped to the end of regular season by barely beating a 1-win Texans team, blowing a 17-point lead to the Jaguars, and getting embarrassed by a Commanders team that had nothing to play for and started a rookie quarterback. But despite any belief that McCarthy might be in trouble if the team sees its postseason come to a premature end, Jerry Jones went on a local radio station this week to dispel that notion.

“No,” Jones said when asked if an early loss could lead to McCarthy losing his job. “I don’t even want to
no. That’s it. I don’t need to go into all the pluses or minuses, but I’ve got a lot more to evaluate Mike McCarthy on than this playoff game.”

Jones is known for talking a big game, but if the Cowboys lose on Monday night — especially if it’s in an embarrassing manor — it will be interesting to see how he manages McCarthy.
