Joe Biden celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day paying tribute to Dr. King by attending the National Action Network’s annual MLK breakfast on Monday. Which just so happened to be the birthday of Arndrea Waters King, wife of Martin Luther King III and daughter-in-law of the late civil rights icon. So, as Jimmy Kimmel shared on Monday night, the president was kind enough to shine some of the spotlight Arndrea’s way by leading the crowd in a rousing “Happy Birthday” serenade… which took an unfortunate turn.
While delivering the keynote speech during Monday’s breakfast, Kimmel noted that the president’s “eggs got a little scrambled and the ol’ Amtrak went a little off the rails.”
While at the podium, Biden shared that his wife Jill has “a rule” in their family: that when it’s someone’s birthday, you sing “Happy Birthday” to them. Which seems more like just a normal thing you do versus a “rule,” but we’ll let Joe call it whatever he wants.
Though the singing itself was horrendous, that wasn’t even the embarrassing part: it was when Biden got to the line in the song where you insert the name of the person whose birthday it is, i.e. “Happy Birthday dear Arndrea.” Except it was at this moment that Biden either forgot who he was singing to or realized he didn’t know her name in the first place. So “Arndrea” came out as something that sounded more like “Valley?” (even the closed-captioning agreed):
ABC
“Vel-meh was really actually very touched by the… whatever your name was,” Kimmel said. “Joe Biden is the Finding Dory of presidents.”
You can watch the full Kimmel clip above, beginning right around the 2:00 mark. Or get straight to the mortifying birthday snafu, which C-SPAN caught, below.
Rising country star Zach Bryan has achieved his first Top 10 hit, as his song, “Something In The Orange,” rose on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In addition, Bryan’s song is one of only fifteen to hit No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart and also make it into the Top 10 on the Hot 100. Other songs that have reached this feat include Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” and their collab with Bebe Rexha, “Meant To Be,” Sam Hunt’s “Body Like A Back Road,” Gabby Barrett’s “I Hope” remix with Charlie Puth, Walker Hayes’ “Fancy Like,” and more.
.@zachlanebryan‘s “Something In The Orange” rises 11-10 on this week’s #Hot100, becoming his first career top 10 hit.
It’s the 15th song in history to hit No. 1 on #HotCountrySongs and reach the top 10 of the #Hot100.
Bryan first wrote “Something In The Orange” after watching the sunset from a cabin in Wisconsin, according to Genius. The single appears on his 34-track long album, American Heartbreak, which arrived last spring. (The album also reached the Top 5 on Billboard‘s 200 Albums chart.)
“I was like, don’t put your guitar down, keep going, something’s going to happen,” he told the New York Times last fall. “Not because I felt driven. Not because I wanted to be famous. Not because I wanted to be rich. I literally just would sit there and think about my mom and be like, Something is telling me not to stop doing this.”

Early on, the misses felt like foreshadowing for disaster to come, causing meltdowns from Dallas fans and Peyton Manning, but the good news for Maher is his dreadful night didn’t have an impact on the outcome of the game, as the Cowboys ran away with a 31-14 win over the Bucs — although, those four points proved very important to some, as the game’s over/under total was set at 45.5. That overall team success may have also saved Maher his job, as after the game a jubilant Jerry Jones told reporters the team wouldn’t be looking for a replacement for Maher before the Divisional Round showdown with the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
“Will you look at some kickers this week?”- Reporter
“No. No. We won’t. He’s done enough good ones.”- Jerry Jones on Cowboys kicker Brett Maher pic.twitter.com/pqqHby6IuD
Patience isn’t always a trait associated with Jerry Jones (his loyalty to head coaches being the exception, here), but in this case he seems to recognize that the grass isn’t always greener and this game was clearly an outlier for Maher, who had missed three extra points all season on 53 attempts. One of those was his last kick of the regular season, though, so Cowboys fans will hope his lone make on his fifth extra point try in Tampa will break him free of his kicking yips and get him back on track.
Against a much better Niners team, the Cowboys are very likely going to need Maher to make some kicks, so giving him a public vote of confidence isn’t a bad idea — that is, unless he can’t shake Monday’s effort off.
However, every once in a while, he shares a thought that takes the latter further than just earning his long-overdue appreciation and actually posits a positive use for it. In this case, Bow Wow proposed that rappers collectivize to solidify their power base in the music industry and provide for the genre’s pioneers, many of whom were left in the lurch in their latter years.
“Hip hop needs a board!” he argued. . “No different than the NBA w/ the players association. A committee. That can set rules and keep things in control and protect this thing we call hip-hop! And have a retirement plan for the OG rappers. I hate seeing my heroes liquor’d out no money just washed.”

It’s a good idea, if not a particularly original one. After all, Jay-Z said as much nearly two decades ago and numerous artists have followed suit since. But the idea has been taking root and fans seem more amenable than ever to backing such an effort.
I concur. Plus, now artists are forced to relinquish masters and publishing in order to secure a 360 deal, which pays the label in perpetuity. How can I help you create it? https://t.co/tipk6lX9Rr
Ridicule him all y’all want but he’s right with this one. The committee, or gatekeepers if you will, should protect the culture and its peers in it since record labels sole purpose is to exploit https://t.co/Pjn8X1xS2R
(SPOILERS from The White Lotus will be found below.)
The White Lotus lifestyle ain’t cheap. The Di Grasso family, for example, spent a yachtload on hotel rooms and escorts, all to ultimately meet an artichoke-wielding, furious grandmother. As a whole, the guests were utterly miserable despite their luxurious Sicilian surroundings, but that can’t stop people from wanting a slice of the experience.
If you are so inclined, AirBnb has you covered — for an unsurprisingly steep price — to enjoy the place where Harper and Daphne’s unlikely friendship began to come together. That would be the Villa Tasca in Palermo (Noto in the show), where Harper spent much of the time wondering what Ethan was doing back at The White Lotus while Cameron was getting it on with Lucia. And Daphne simply did not care about the dudes.
The cost of staying a night at Villa Tasca is, as you might expect, eye-wateringly expensive. In Airbnb’s ‘Luxe’ range, the nightly price is nearly £4,900 ($5,990) — and there’s a three-night minimum stay. Even if you manage to pack out the palace with its full capacity of guests (which is eight), that’s still really pricey.
Presumably, the price is just as steep in the HBO show, and Daphne doesn’t seem to mind at all. She and Cameron have a deal, as Harper finds out, that she looks past his frequent indiscretions and does her own thing. That also includes some form of unorthodox relationship with her trainer, and she characterizes her husband’s coworkers as “sociopaths,” so perhaps she feels the same about him as well. Whatever the case, Daphne got to be happy, and Harper got to be miserable, inside this posh villa.
The Neo-classical villa sits upon 20 acres, and here’s more from AirBnb:
Play family games on the lush lawns, stir up Victorian-style intrigue amid century-old trees and citrus groves, steal a honeymoon-worthy moment in the greenhouse, and watch the swans paddle their way around their pond. There’s also a swimming pool and furnished terrace and, inside, a billiards room, music room, bar, TV, and Wi-Fi. Your holiday at the estate includes service from a full staff.
That doesn’t sound like nearly as bad of a time as Tanya had in Palermo. Let’s go.
LeBron James is in his 20th NBA season, which means there are rookies coming into the league that were literally not alive when his career began.
One such rookie is Jabari Smith Jr. of the Houston Rockets, who got to face off with James and the Lakers on Monday night in TNT’s final game of the Martin Luther King Jr. day slate. Smith’s first interaction with LeBron on the court was informing him that James’ first ever NBA game was against Smith’s dad, who was a member of the 2003-04 Sacramento Kings that the Cleveland Cavaliers played in James’ professional debut.

LeBron wasn’t trying to hear that from Smith, who asked if it made him feel old. The answer was, yes, but if the intended consequence was getting LeBron rattled, that didn’t pan out as he put up 48 points on Smith’s Rockets in a seven-point Lakers win. After the game, Jared Greenberg asked him about the exchange the broadcast got on its mic’d up segment, and LeBron admitted it made him feel “old as crap.”
— CJ Fogler AKA Perc70 #BlackLivesMatter (@cjzero) January 17, 2023
That’s what happens at 38 years old in a league full of guys in their early 20s, but with how many young guys that are coming in as sons of former NBA players, this isn’t the first or last time James will run into this scenario. Given LeBron’s stated goal is playing at least two more years in order to play with his son Bronny, he’s only going to feel older, but to this point that hasn’t slowed him down much.
Last night (January 16), R&B singer and songwriter Sudan Archives stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform “Homesick (Gorgeous And Arrogant)” from her latest album, Natural Brown Prom Queen.
During her performance, Sudan was surrounded by an orchestra featuring a trumpeter, a guitarist, and a percussionist. The instrumentalists stood on raised platforms, as Sudan stood front and center, delivering silky vocals while playing the violin.
“You think I’m pretty / I think you’re gorgeous / I think you’re arrogant / You think I’m flawless / I think you’re mad at me / You think I am, too / Don’t worry, baby / I wanna be like you,” she sings on the song’s chorus.
In an interview with Teeth last year, Sudan revealed that her album, Natural Brown Prom Queen came to her while she was feeling homesick during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thankfully, she has several routines in practice that help her feel close to her home in Los Angeles, as well as her hometown of Cincinnati.
“I am always Facetiming my family,” she said. “I Facetime my cousin Taylor every day, because she is a makeup artist. I Facetime her and am like, ‘Alright, what’s the look for today?’ And she’ll help me figure out how to do these crazy looks that I try to do. I always try to bring some incense, something that smells similar to something that I would burn in my house. I really love smells.”

Intriguingly, the closest thing we have to confirmation of a new album came with his last one — or at least, the vinyl record version of Blonde that was reissued in December. According to fan accounts receiving their orders over the weekend, a foldout poster included with the vinyl hints at Frank’s future album plans through the story of a “fictitious Recording Artist” — an obvious stand-in for Frank himself.
Back sides of the posters from the recent Blonded merch sale tell a narrative that’s as close to an album announcement as we’ll ever get from Frank Ocean. pic.twitter.com/15nvU780No
The gist of the story is that Frank — or the Recording Artist — had become disillusioned with the long-form release strategy and planned to pivot to solely releasing singles, a practice he believed better suited to modern listening habits. However, in the time since Blonde was released, and with COVID-19 derailing his DJ plans, “The Recording Artist has since changed his mind about the singles model, and is again interested in more durational bodies of work.”
Although he doesn’t reveal just what his album plans are, at least fans can take comfort in knowing that he does want to put one out.
Pop music appears to be back in full swing after the holiday lull… And considering the stacked lineup on this week’s Best New Pop roundup, we are not complaining one bit. From some subtle shade thrown about some exes on songs to emotionally reflective tracks, there truly is something worth checking out for every type of listener in the new year.
On Miley Cyrus’ major new single, “Flowers,” she turns the tables on the Bruno Mars song “When I Was Your Man” to craft an ode to self-empowerment. As she notes in the chorus, “I can hold my own hand.” Adding fuel to the fire, it’s also rumored she timed the release to her ex’s birthday. We love a powerful petty moment.
Gracie Abrams — “Where Do We Go Now?”
Rising star Gracie Abrams teamed up with The National’s Aaron Dessner to create her upcoming album. While she released a few one-off songs last fall, “Where Do We Go Now?” is the official lead single from the record — and it’s a painfully pensive one about a failed relationship.
Ava Max — “One Of Us”
Max shows off her vocals right from the start of “One Of Us.” However, just when you think the song is going to be a bonafide ballad, the instrumental shifts to something completely different. As she is gearing up for her debut record, Diamonds & Dancefloors, Max has yet to have a single miss.
Shakira, Bizarrap — “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53”
Keeping with the theme of some powerful petty pop icons, Shakira did not come to play in her new collab with the producer Bizarrap. “You left me with your mom as a neighbor / The press at my door, and a debt with the Treasury / You thought you’d hurt me, but you made me stronger,” she spills on the second verse — and that’s not even the sickest burn.
Sam Smith, Koffee, Jessie Reyez — “Gimme”
Sam Smith dropped their anticipated collaboration with Jessie Reyez and Koffee titled “Gimme,” the follow-up single since their massive hit with Kim Petras. Yet, this one takes on a different type of dancefloor tone, employing a funkier beat compared to an electronic pop instrumental. It’s still just as fun though and considering the early singles ahead of Smith’s album, Gloria, there’s a high chance it could see the same success as “Unholy.”
Måneskin feat. Tom Morello — “Gossip”
Another unique pairing on this list, Eurovision breakout stars Måneskin enlisted Tom Morello for a more rock-influenced song. “Don’t act like you don’t know,” the band’s lead singer muses over an addictive drum line. And hey, there’s even a groovy guitar solo from the Rage Against The Machine man himself.
Taeyang feat. Jimin — “Vibe”
“Vibe” is a very fun crossover between BIGBANG’s Taeyang and BTS’ Jimin that will have you singing the song for days to come. As Jimin puts it, “This will be the one and only anthem.” In addition, the instrumental perfectly complements the uplifting energy of the track — making the title feel all the more fitting.
Mimi Webb — “Red Flags”
The latest of rising pop star Mimi Webb’s singles, “Red Flags” reminisces about a walking warning of a relationship that she keeps returning to.
“I was very in love, I think sometimes you want what you can’t have,” she told Official Charts. “It can be really challenging and you have to have such a discipline to walk away. For me, I look back at our old conversations and, honestly, that person was really trying to get me to get break up with them.”
Indy — “Hometown”
Indy is a rising star whose sister is practically pop royalty… As it’s Lorde. (Get it, “Royals?”) And she inherited the same powerfully unique vocal tone. “Hometown” has some stunningly layered harmonies in the verses before the moody nighttime track explodes on the chorus.
