Ethel Cain Believes The Internet ‘Will Be The Death Of Society And Human Beings As A Species’

To be a successful musician today, it’s essentially a requirement to have some sort of online presence. Ethel Cain is going through those motions, but she’s not a big internet fan. In fact, Cain says she’s “anti-internet.”

In a new Cosmopolitan interview, after sharing some of her thoughts about being online, Cain was asked point-blank if she’s anti-internet and she responded:

“I’m anti-internet. I think that the internet is a breeding ground for all of the worst parts of human nature. I think that the internet will be the death of society and human beings as a species. You can quote me on that when we’re all dead.”

That said, she’s a big Pinterest fan: “I love Pinterest. I’m on Pinterest right now. It’s like Tumblr, but I don’t have to talk to people. I have a lot of boards for weird sh*t. I just love to look at pictures.”

Elsewhere, she discussed some resurfaced posts of hers from years ago, saying, “The things from my past were hateful, and I was responsible for taking accountability no matter how they came to light. In my statement, I said, ‘I’m deeply ashamed and deeply regret that that was ever a part of my history.’ But it was strange addressing it because I have intimate knowledge of this campaign against me. While some of those screenshots were mine to bear the brunt of responsibility for, the people who leaked them were not leaking them with any kind of sense of justice in mind. They were leaked to hurt me.”

She added, “I admitted to saying racist remarks. I cannot think of something that didn’t come out of my mouth at that time, which is so embarrassing. It’s just a dark part of my life that I look back on. The fact that I would’ve said anything like that to impress my friends is probably the most embarrassing thing that I can imagine.”

DJ Snake Faces An ‘Evil’ ‘Sound Check’ Choice Between Bob Marley And Sade

A quick note for this week’s episode of Sound Check: Yes, Jeremy is still the host. Mr. Hecht just looks a little different after losing his bet with Coco Jones and having to shave off his beard. We are all very sorry for his loss.

The guest this week is DJ Snake, the French DJ, record producer, and songwriter responsible for hits like “Turn Down for What” with Lil Jon, “Lean On” with Major Lazer, and “Taki Taki” with Selena Gomez, Ozuna and Cardi B. He’s also a versatile music head, so the Sound Check challenge takes him from Michael Jackson to Clipse, hitting a lot of stops between.

Here’s how it works: Jeremy plays two songs for the guest artist, who has to choose one and explain their choice, giving Jeremy a chance to learn their musical taste. Jeremy then has to guess the artist’s life anthem, the song they’d take to a desert island, which the guest wrote down earlier on a piece of paper. Our production team has also given him a decoy song, and Jeremy has to guess which is correct based on what he’s learned in the previous rounds.

Watch DJ Snake take on the Sound Check challenge above. New episodes of Sound Check drop every Wednesday at noon ET/9 a.m. PT on Uproxx’s YouTube.

Clipse’s ‘Birds Don’t Sing’ Video With John Legend Is A Emotional Eulogy For Their Parents

“Birds” might well be one of the many, many euphemisms for a certain white, powdered chemical substance that is a favorite subject of Virginia rap duo Clipse’s verses, but the meaning in their new album opener “Birds Don’t Sing” is a bit more literal. The song, which features John Legend and the Voices of Fire vocal group, deals with Malice and Pusha T’s relationships with their parents — and their mixed emotions in the wake of their parents passing.

In the first verse, Push writes a regretful letter to the brothers’ mom, rapping, “You even told Dad you wished y’all never splitted / See, you were checkin’ boxes, I was checkin’ my mentions / Sayin’ you was tired but not ready to go / Basically was dying without letting me know.” In the second verse, Malice echoes the sentiment, recounting his discovery of their father’s death not long after. “Your car was in the driveway, I knew you were home / By the third knock, a chill ran through my bones,” he recalls. “The way you missed Mama, I guess I should’ve known / Chivalry ain’t dead, you ain’t let her go alone.”

“Birds Don’t Sing” is the emotional standout of Clipse’s comeback album Let God Sort Em Out, but their first album in 15 years has plenty of highlights, including “Chains & Whips” with Kendrick Lamar, “So Be It,” and “P.O.V.” with Tyler The Creator.

Lana Del Rey Once Again Denies That She Grew Up Wealthy Following Years Of Rumors

Lana Del Rey Leeds Festival 2024

For years, there has been a lot of mythology and speculation about Lana Del Rey’s past. Most notable is the idea that she grew up wealthy despite presenting herself as having had humble beginnings. Also for years, Del Rey has tried to deny this and set the record straight. Now, she has done so again.

As Stereogum notes, in Instagram comments, Del Rey addressed a resurfaced interview from Ron Pope, a musician who performed with Del Rey some in the 2000s. Pope said Del Rey had a rich upbringing, but he has since said he “was given sh*tty intel” and apologized for “spreading that nonsense!”

Del Rey wrote in part:

“I don’t remember a Ron Pope, although I might if I saw him. The only people I still know from school are from home. And I wouldn’t say I grew up anywhere other than lake placid. Whoever he was I must’ve felt comfortable to tell him that I spent a lot of time with my grandmother and that I did live for a while in a trailer Alabama not Arkansas- as well as in North Bergen, New Jersey. I sold my life rights for ten thousand dollars to pay for that trailer. These rather backhanded complimentary tales tell a larger story of the energy that still overwhelms my story. Many of the people I had to go to school with will never know what it was like to do what I had to do or go where I had to go to feel safe. One thing I can say is that if we had grown up with money- I firmly believe I would not have put myself in the position to be in the spotlight. My difficulties lead me to one concept of how I could get out of the spot I was in. The only comfort I have in my deeply misunderstood trajectory is that it lead me to Jeremy and allowed me to stay near to my siblings.”

Ed Sheeran Has A Justin Bieber Collaboration In The Vault That Probably Won’t Be Released

Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber have a history of working together, most notably on their hit 2019 joint single “I Don’t Care.” (Sheeran also co-wrote Bieber’s 2015 No. 1 single “Love Yourself.”) They tried to get another track going, too, but it ended up appearing as a Sheeran solo song, “Camera” from his new album Play. There is a version of the song with Bieber floating around, though.

In a recent interview on SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up, Sheeran said, “I wrote it for = and then it ended up being a duet with Justin Bieber for Justice, and then it never materialized. I’ve got a version with Justin on it that’s… it’s pretty cool, but it just exists in the ether, and yeah, now it’s out. I think people like it.”

He then said of the song:

“I think the song ‘Camera’ itself is, like, most of the best moments of my life were never caught on camera, and there is something nice about how your mind remembers stuff. I always think this when I look at my kids: When I was 11, I remember playing my first show and thinking that I was rocking out to 40,000 people and it was amazing. Had someone filmed that on a camera phone, takes the magic away, because it’s actually, like, that’s the real life and actually, it wasn’t that good and it was to 20 people in this hall and blah, blah, blah, but I think sometimes when things aren’t caught on camera… Like, I remember my proposal to my wife in a very specific way. It might have actually been completely different if someone had filmed it. I do think that cameras and videoing things sometimes take the magic away.”

Check out clips from the interview above and below.

Play is out now via Gingerbread Man Records/Atlantic Records. Find more information here.

Mass Appeal & Marvel Are Launching ‘Legend Has It…’ Comics At New York Comic Con

legend has it marvel mass appeal
Marvel Comics

I’ve written a bunch about the crossovers between hip-hop and comics books, from Stan Lee’s influence on rap to the comics lines created by stars like Lisa and Metro Boomin.

At New York Comic Con next week, Marvel and Mass Appeal will carry on that tradition (heh), with Legend Has It…, a new comics series inspired by Mass Appeal’s ongoing album initiative starring rap icons such as Big L, De La Soul, Ghostface Killah, Mobb Deep, Nas, Raekwon, and Slick Rick. Written by Brandon Thomas and illustrated by Sanford Greene, the series will be formally launched on October 10 at NYCC, with issue #1 available at Whatnot’s live shopping stage, Whatnot House, from 5:30–7:00 PM ET, with an exclusive variant cover following the “Comics and Hip-Hop: A Marvel x Mass Appeal Conversation” panel.

There might be no better partner to explore the intersections between rap and comics than Marvel, as the publisher already has a rich history of working with rap titans through its 2015 variant covers turning books starring the likes of Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, and ThorMidnight Marauders, 50 Cent’s Get Rich Or Die Trying, ASAP Rocky’s Long.Live.A$AP, and MF Doom and Madlib’s Madvillainy.

In a press release, Mass Appeal’s founder Nas said, “Working with Marvel on this comic is a celebration of Hip Hop and its legacy. There’s a story we tell through our music, and watching that energy come to life in these pages is a tribute to the culture that shaped us and continues to inspire generations.”

Lola Young Says She’s ‘Going Away For A While’ After Collapsing On Stage

Lola Young Conor Cunningham top
Conor Cunningham

While performing at the All Things Go Festival in New York this weekend, Lola Young had a scary incident: Suddenly, she collapsed on stage and fell to the floor. She later shared a message online, saying, “Hi, for anyone who saw my set at All Things Go today, I am doing OK now. Thank you for all of your support, Lola.”

As for where Young stands now, she’ll be taking some time to herself: Today (September 30), she shared a post on Instagram, announcing that she is cancelling “everything for the foreseeable future” and “going away for a while.”

The post reads in full:

“I’m going away for a while. It pains me to say I have to cancel everything for the foreseeable future.

Thank you for all the love and support. I’m so sorry to let anyone down who has bought a ticket to see me, it hurts me more than you know. Obviously you will be entitled to a full refund.

I really hope you’ll give me a second chance once I’ve had some time to work on myself and come back stronger.

Love you all,
Lola x”

Young’s website currently lists a bunch of upcoming tour dates and festival appearances between October 2025 and June 2026, but presumably, at least some of those will be officially cancelled.

Joey Badass Brings Back The Harlem Shake In His Nostalgic ‘Supaflee’ Video

When I first hit play on Joey Badass‘s new album Lonely At The Top, “Supaflee” jumped out at me as the notoriously nostalgic rapper’s nod to the mid-2000s mixtape era. It sounds kinda like it was produced by prime The Neptunes, and Joey’s flow has never resembled fellow Brooklynite Fabolous’ distinctive delivery more than it does here.

Apparently, Joey feels the same way, as the “Supaflee” video winds up being nearly a straight-up remake of Fab’s 2001 video for “Young’n (Holla Back),” which was produced by The Neptunes in full 2000s phasers-on-high mode. Here, see for yourself:

While it’s not a shot-for-shot rehash of the video, Joey’s vid hits most of the same beats: rapping in a subway, random New Yorkers doing the Harlem Shake (the real one, not whatever that nonsense was that y’all were doing twelve years ago as part of a “meme”), and a third-minute location change to a studio backdrop performance. Joey’s is black-and-white versus Fab’s colorful switch-up, but it’s fun to see him paying homage while updating the formula.

Joey has also released one other video from Lonely At The Top: “Still” with Ab-Soul and Rapsody. They will also join him on his Dark Aura Tour, which you can find more info about here.

You can watch the “Supaflee” video above.

Lonely At The Top is out now via Columbia Records. You can find more info here.
