Lil Yachty Is Assembling An All-Women Band Ahead Of What Seems To Be A New Era

It may be a while before we hear Lil Yachty’s psychedelic Sonic Ranch album, due to the project falling victim to leaks last month, but that’s not keeping him from pursuing other ideas. Yesterday (January 10), the “Poland” rapper announced that he’s looking to form an all-women band.

“Yachty is putting a band together. I want an all-girls band,” he said in an Instagram post, noting he’s looking for two to three background singers, a guitar player, a bass player, a drummer, and a keyboard player. The post was captioned, “Tryouts for my band Thursday. Shall the most talented women please pull up… Let’s Meet! See U Soon Ladies.” It is also worth noting that this is currently the only post on his Instagram page, as his account appears to be cleared — a common practice for artists as they begin to tease new album eras.

It is unclear whether Yachty is wanting to put together the band as part of a new album, for a backing band for an upcoming tour, or for another purpose. However, in an interview with Icebox that took place over a year ago, he revealed that he wants his future projects to spawn from a different creative process.

“I’ve met all these amazing musicians and producers,” he said when speaking about his upcoming album. “It’s like a psychedelic alternative project. It’s different. It’s all live instrumentation. I’ve changed my dynamic. I’m telling you, this album and on, I’m creating music a whole lot differently.”

Eddie Murphy’s Globes Speech Sparked Debate On Whether A ‘Will Smith Joke’ Still Works In 2023

Maybe time has gotten away from you, or maybe you just don’t care, but it’s been about 10 months since The Slap debacle of 2022. Yeah, we thought that we had all moved on. The summer came and went, new memes lived and died, and we thought that finally this whole thing would be put behind us. That is until Award Season 2023 began.

The Golden Globes took place last night, and after all that has gone down with that award show, the calm thing to do would be to not mention The Slap at all and keep everyone on their best behavior. But when you put a bunch of famous (and rich) people in a room, it’s pretty hard to control the situation.

We had some great moments: Jennifer Coolidge and Quinta Brunson secured their legendary status by just being themselves, meanwhile Mike White was bawling like a toddler at all of the wins (as he should be). And, yes, host Jerrod Carmichael made a short reference to Will Smith, but the real joke of the night was told by Eddie Murphy.

Murphy was accepting the Cecil B. DeMille award when he was giving some important life advice to the next generation. “It’s very simple, just do these three things: pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth!” Honestly, it could have been worse.

Of course, Twitter had some thoughts about the comment, with some saying it was a stale punchline, while others were happy that Murphy was the one to get the last laugh.

While Murphy’s joke was pretty mild, many decided that it should have been left in 2022.

Let’s just hope that the Oscars pay attention to what the people actually care about: more Michelle Yeoh!

‘Netflix Would Love’ If Lady Gaga Made An Appearance In ‘Wednesday,’ According To Jenna Ortega

During last night’s digital pre-show for the 2023 Golden Globes, the cast of Netflix’s hit series Wednesday revealed their thoughts about a major pop star potentially joining season two.

That’s right: rumors about Lady Gaga making an appearance have started swirling — as she’s become significantly tied to the show’s promotions. Her 2011 song “Bloody Mary” became the soundtrack to a viral TikTok dance trend that recreates what Jenna Ortega (who plays Wednesday) did in an episode.

“I’m sure Netflix would love that,” Ortega told Variety at the event before sharing a sweet story about a past interaction between her and Gaga. She continued, “You know what’s funny? A long time ago I worked with a hairdresser that worked with Gaga and I just had seen Gaga in concert a few years before. [The hairdresser got] Gaga [to make] me a video saying she heard I was a fan. Gaga made me a sweet video. I doubt she remembers. But to see her to do that now… it’s one of those moments you realize life changes really fast.”

Ortega was asked about if Gaga hypothetically joined the series, which character would she play? “If Lady Gaga were to be a part of it, they’d have to be two monsters who understand each other,” she described, noting that the pop star’s relationship to Wednesday would have to be similar to the dynamic between her and Mrs. Thornhill (Christina Ricci).

However, as for an official confirmation or denying the rumors, the Wednesday star admitted she doesn’t really know a lot. Given Netflix just announced the renewal of season two, it seems it will be at least a couple of months with writing and filming — with or without Gaga.

“I have seen nothing and I know nothing,” Ortega added. “As the actor you’re told what to do. I’m waiting on it! I think they’re just starting to get a writers room together so we’ll see.”

Gerard Butler’s ‘Plane’ Absolutely (And Somewhat Improbably) Rips

There used to be movies like Plane all the time. If Plane had come out in the ’90s, it would be called Deadly Turbulence, or something like that, get terrible reviews, and probably make a lot of money. It reminds me a little of movies like Executive Decision, which, when it came out, made money and was enjoyable enough. (Rewatching Executive Decision recently, when compared to the all CGI movies we get today, it feels like some sort of action movie masterpiece.) Now, Plane, first, has to have a unique title like Plane to garner attention on social media, which it certainly has. And now a movie like Plane is so rare and such a throwback, it comes off as a refreshing breather from what we usually get fed at theaters these days. Like its title, Plane is a tight and to-the-point movie and I had a whole lot of fun watching it. (Also, as a bonus, like most movies from that era, once the plot is wrapped up, it “just ends.”)

Also, it is remarkable that one of the few actors who seems immune to the direction movies are going today is Gerard Butler. He’s never gone down the superhero route, though I’m sure he certainly could if he wanted to. But why would he? He produces his movies and has a lot of creative control over the final product. Also, producing movies that make money is a lucrative career. Why would he give up his time spent making his own movies to agree to six Marvel movies, or whatever it is these days? Gerard Butler, for the time being at least, seems to have one of the best positions in filmmaking today. If I’m him, I’d just keep making movies like Plane for as long as I possibly could.

In Jean-François Richet’s Plane, Butler plays Brodie Torrance, a commercial airline pilot stuck doing lousy routes because he once got into an altercation with an obnoxious and rowdy passenger. On an overnight flight out of Tokyo, a cost-conscious executive makes the decision to send Brodie’s flight through a storm as opposed to using extra fuel to go around it. A lightning strike knocks out the power on the plane, forcing Brodie to ditch in the ocean … if not for being saved at the last moment a small island on the horizon.

Unfortunately, this island is run by warring militias and now, having pulled off a miracle landing, the airline doesn’t know where to look for them and Brodie has to keep his crew and passengers safe from the militias. A good decision made about the plot of this movie is that it wasn’t a full flight. So there aren’t that many passengers, which allows us as a viewer to kind of get to know their personalities (a few of them aren’t thrilled with the current situation), which raises the stakes when they are in danger. But complicating this, one of the passengers (Mike Colter) is a prisoner accused of murder being transported by a federal agent. And, wouldn’t you know it, the federal agent doesn’t survive the crash. So now Brodie has to also figure out this particular situation as well. (It’s probably not too surprising to learn there’s a lot more to Colter’s character than what we are initially told.) So, yes, Brodie Torrance has quite a bit on his plate. And leading the search and rescue operation is a kind of awesome Tony Goldwyn who is playing one of those kind of characters we don’t see as often anymore who, by god, just knows how to get things done.

Plane is the kind of movie in which Gerard Butler literally flies a plane into a bad guy. (For the record, I applauded.) I think everyone involved knows what they are doing by naming this movie Plane. It’s such a, frankly, nonsense title, it’s hard to ignore, to the point it becomes a genius title. But the little trick up Plane’s sleeve is the movie actually delivers. It never gets convoluted or caught up in itself like movies with meta-sounding titles sometimes tend to do. It’s a ’90s style, R-rated action movie that just keeps moving, with very little fat, and delivers some true applause moments. (There’s one moment in particular when Butler is giving a rousing speech to his passengers about what they had to do next to survive that is a phenomenal action movie moment. It involves a plane.)

I am not naive to the point I think Plane could signal a return to fun action movies being an actual option at the local cineplex. Last year’s Ambulance had some similar attributes – a movie that I consider one of my favorites of 2022 – but never caught on at the box office. (For the record, Plane has far fewer drone shots.) But we just have to hope Gerard Butler can continue this streak and keep delivering this particular type of R-rated action movie … because he’s about the only one left who can.

‘Plane’ opens in theaters nationwide this weekend. You can contact Mike Ryan directly on Twitter.

Eddie Murphy Offered Some Slight Insight Into His Will Smith Joke At The Golden Globes

Should we have expected to hear some Will Smith jokes at the Golden Globes? The moment when he delivered an onstage slap to Chris Rock was arguably the Oscars’ saving grace last year, but in 2023, people are kind-of over hearing about it. A “Will Smith joke” Twitter search reveals as much, but I’m honestly surprised that we didn’t hear more references to that show-stopping moment from 2022. Because Hollywood loves to be self-referential, etc.

If there’s anyone, however, who could get away with a Will Smith joke at the Globes, it’s Eddie Murphy. And he went there. During his speech to accept the honorary Cecil B. DeMille award, the legendary comedian offered career advice to all who would listen:

“I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind… It’s very simple, just do these three things: pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth!”

Following his onstage moment, Murphy transitioned into backstage mode, and of course, he fielded a question about the joke. He clarified that he had spoken to neither Rock nor Smith about that moment. However, “I love them both.”

Sometimes, a joke really is just a joke. We’ll see if anyone addresses the matter at the Oscars. Go time for that ceremony is March 12.

Rihanna Loved Jerrod Carmichael’s ‘Very Controversial’ Joke About Her Upcoming Album At The Golden Globes

At the 2023 Golden Globes last night (January 10), Rihanna’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever song “Lift Me Up” didn’t take home the award for Best Original Song, Motion Picture. She still stole the show, though, by getting multiple shout-outs during the broadcast. That included one from host Jerrod Carmichael, who cracked a joke that Rihanna fans are probably wishing he hadn’t.

Addressing Rihanna between awards, Carmichael said, “You know what? Honestly, only because I see Rihanna is here, and I’m gonna say… I’m gonna say something very controversial that… I will actually get in trouble for this: Rihanna, you take all the time you want on that album, girl. Don’t let these fools on the internet pressure you into nothing!”

As Carmichael got to the part about his comment being “controversial,” Rihanna smiled as she waited for the punchline. When that dropped, she gave a laugh and a clap, putting her hands on her face and saying something to the people around her.

As for those fools on the internet, they don’t seem to feel the same as Carmichael. One Rihanna fan wrote, “Who this [clown] Jerrod Carmicheal calling a fool? Talking bout ‘don’t let these fools on the internet pressure you into nothing.’ Rihanna owes us that album and we need it ASAP!” Even the Golden Globes themselves got in on the moment, tweeting, “Jerrod Carmichael may want you to take your time but we’d like that album ASAP.”

Rihanna, Taylor Swift, And Lady Gaga Lost At The Golden Globes To An Extremely Popular Song You May Not Have Heard Of

The 2023 Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place last night (January 10), and while the proceedings are focused on TV and movies, music makes its way into the mix, too. Specifically, there are two music categories: Best Original Score, Motion Picture and Best Original Song, Motion Picture. The former was won by Justin Hurwitz’s work on Babylon.

As for the latter, songs by Taylor Swift (“Carolina” from Where The Crawdads Sing), Rihanna (“Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), and Lady Gaga (“Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick) were in contention. None of those ended up winning, though. Instead, the Best Original Song award went to Kala Bhairava, M. M. Keeravani, and Rahul Sipligunj’s “Naatu Naatu,” a Telugu-language song from the hit 2022 Indian movie RRR.

While “Naatu Naatu” may not be backed by the star power of a song by Gaga, Rihanna, or Swift (among American/English-speaking audiences, at least), it has achieved massive popularity with over 111 million views on YouTube. That puts it right up there with its competitors: “Hold My Hand” has 138 million views while “Lift Me Up” is at about 92 million and “Carolina” has around 8 million.

Rihanna was in attendance and was a good sport, as she made sure to offer her congratulations to the folks behind RRR.

Meanwhile, RRR was also up for Best Picture, Foreign Language, but that award went to Argentina, 1985.

SZA’s New Video For ‘Kill Bill’ Is As Bloody As You’d Expect

SZA‘s new album S.O.S., the long-awaited follow-up to the critically-acclaimed Ctrl, has been No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart for four weeks now. The track with the most success has been the mischievous, relentlessly catchy “Kill Bill,” which topped the charts as well. She teased a video for it at the end of December, and now it’s finally out.

Considering the cinematic, violent nature of the song (“I might kill my ex, I still love him though / Rather be in jail than alone,” she sings on the chorus), the video had to be intense. And it is. It kicks off with a round of many gunshots, not shot by SZA, though. However, she makes it out alive, and later procures a sword for a tumultuous sword fight. Inspired by Quentin Tarantino, the video has a cameo from Vivica A. Fox, who was in Tarantino’s iconic film Kill Bill.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly last month, she said, “I love Vivica A. Fox’s character. I love Lucy Liu’s character. I even love Bill because he’s super complex. I feel like he doesn’t understand why he did what he did. He’s void of emotion, but he loved The Bride so much that he couldn’t stand her to be with anyone else.”

Francis Ford Coppola Is Laughing Off Rumors That The Set Of His Self-Financed ‘Megalopolis’ Is A Disaster: ‘Ha Ha, Just Wait And See’

Francis Ford Coppola is no stranger to disastrous film shoots. The making of The Godfather was so wild that Paramount+ made a limited series about it. Apocalypse Now begat a gripping documentary. Both produced timeless masterpieces. On Monday, rumors swirled that something similar was happening on the set of his self-financed, star-studded dream project Megalopolis, claiming that there’d been a “crew exodus,” “chaos” and a “ballooning budget.” But Coppola and other key players are laughing that talk off.

“I’ve never worked on a film where I was so happy with the cast,” Coppola told Deadline, shooting down some of the wilder rumors. He continued:

“I am so happy with the look and that we are so on schedule. These reports never say who these sources are. To them, I say, ha, ha, just wait and see. Because this is a beautiful film and primarily so because the cast is so great. I’ve never enjoyed working with a cast who are so hardworking and so willing to go search for the unconventional, to come upon hidden solutions. It is a thrill to work with these actors and the photography is everything I could hope for. The dailies are great. So if we’re on schedule, and I love the actors and the look is great, I don’t know what anyone’s talking about here.”

Coppola did acknowledge that there have been some crew turnovers. One major change mid-stride was switching up the VFX department. He was using on-set virtual production, which involves mostly or completely doing the special effects first then placing the actors on a volume, which includes a wall of LED screens. It’s how they shot The Mandalorian. But they decided it would cut costs to do it the old fashioned way with green screen, so they can add effects in post-production.

“It was basically about managing cost,” Coppola said.

Coppola wasn’t the only one who weighed in. So did Adam Driver, who stars in the film, about replacing a destroyed city with a new metropolis. “All good here! Not sure what set you’re talking about! I don’t recognize that one! I’ve been on sets that were chaotic and this one is far from it,” Driver told Deadline. He continued:

“The environment that’s being created by Francis, is one of focus and inspiration. As of now, we’re on schedule, making our days, and honestly, it’s been one of the best shooting experiences I’ve had. Our crew is fast and inventive, our costume department is on point, the actors are incredible and willing, and Francis is one of the most insightful and caring people to work with. I’m very proud to be making this movie with him, and them, and though I haven’t interviewed everyone, I can confidently say that that’s the general attitude on set.”

Driver suggested the film is unlike most shoots, but that shouldn’t be a bad thing. “No one signed up for this movie expecting the process to be conventional. We were expecting the opposite in the pursuit of making something unique,” Driver said. “The only madness I’ve observed is that more productions aren’t allowed to be as creatively wild and experimentally focused, precisely because someone else is paying for it. It’s an effort and risk by Francis that I feel should be applauded, not publicly mischaracterized as troubled.”

Coppola even seemed confident that the film wouldn’t get out of control, like Apocalypse Now, which went wildly over budget and whose shoot stretched on for over a year. “We’ll finish the film in spring of 2023, and we’re totally on schedule, which is hard to do on a big picture,” Coppola said. “I don’t know how many films can say that eight weeks in but we are and that’s a fact.”

Perhaps this is bad news for those hoping for another notorious Francis Ford Coppola shoot that winds up birthing a masterpiece. Still, it sounds like there’s just enough good chaos to give us one of those anyway.
