The Razzies Apologized After Realizing Nominating A 12-Year-Old Girl Was Maybe Too Mean Even For Them

The Golden Raspberry Awards have always attracted backlash. Their first year the awards body, which honors purportedly bad cinema, had the stones to nominate master filmmakers Stanley Kubrick (for The Shining), Brian De Palma (for Dressed to Kill), and William Friedkin (for Cruising). Last year they did the unthinkable: They apologized and retracted an entire category dedicated to low-rent Bruce Willis movies, which they awarded shortly before it was revealed he suffers from aphasia. Now they’ve had to say sorry again after being too mean.

As per Variety, the Razzies have backpedaled on one of this year’s nominees: Firestarter star Ryan Kiera Armstrong. The problem? Armstrong is 12 years old. She was 11 when she filmed it. The nomination caught a lot of people’s eyes and, rather than double down, they not only apologized and axed the nom; they also enacted an age limit, so that anyone under 18 can’t be razzed for some movie they did.

“Sometimes, you do things without thinking, Then you are called out for it. Then you get it. It’s why the Razzies were created in the first place,” Razzies founder John Wilson (not the guy from the excellent HBO show) told Variety. “We have never intended to bury anyone’s career. It is why our Redeemer Award was created. We all make mistakes, very much us included.”

Last year the Razzies also retroactively cancelled another nomination: the one Shelley Duvall accrued for The Shining. It’s long been known that the shoot was difficult for her, and a behind-the-scenes documentary, made by Kubrick’s daughter Vivian, features him haranguing her in front of the crew after missing a cue. They have yet to apologize for nominating Ben Affleck’s hilarious work in The Last Duel last year — or for repeatedly trashing Tom Hanks this year, because who would ever do that to Tom Hanks?

Little boy and his mom get the surprise of a lifetime: tickets to the Eagles game

In today’s world, it’s easy to get caught up in all the negative news we’re exposed to, but in reality, most good deeds are done away from a camera—just one person helping another without desire for fanfare. And for mom Bryanne McBride and her young son, Mason, that’s exactly what they were doing when they got the surprise of a lifetime.

Bryanne was approached by a man in a parking lot asking for a dollar to catch the bus. The entire time, the mom scrounged around in her purse looking for spare change and revealed she felt bad because she thought she had some. Bryanne’s desire to help was a simple act of kindness to another human in need without the expectation of something in return.

During the time it took for the unsuspecting mother to dig for loose change, the “stranded” stranger, Zach, introduced himself and asked if the duo were from Philly. Once they said they were from the area, he then inquired if they were Eagles fans…the football team, not the birds. “You ever been to an Eagles game?” Zach asked.

The two quickly said no but the mom was focused on retrieving some quarters for this stranger. Zach continued to question them about the Eagles game, asking, “Would you want to go one day?” The answer was an enthusiastic yes, though Bryanne never broke her gaze from the purse as she looked for change. When she finally relented that she had no money in her purse and would need to check her car, she came back to a surprise.

Zach asked why Bryanne was so willing to help him and her response was just more evidence that she’s simply a kind person. “I hate telling people no, especially when I can help,” she said. After she handed him the money, he gave it to Mason and said he didn’t actually need it before handing the generous mom $500 in cash. But Zach wasn’t done—he had tickets to the Eagles game that night and gave the mother and son the tickets.

The Points Guy Shares His Best Pieces Of Budget Travel Wisdom For 2023

A new year is fresh upon us, meaning there’s 12 months waiting for new travel adventures and spiritually-enhancing experiences. But whether you have your sights set on finally embarking on your dream trip or starting to cross off destinations on your travel bucket list, there’s no doubt that traveling can eat up your bank account. Or… does it?

While booking trips – whether domestically or abroad – does require some chunk of change, it doesn’t have to break the bank.

In order to help you have the best year, full of travel, we’ve tapped Brian Kelly – aka The Points Guy – a preeminent voice for all things travel, loyalty programs, and credit card perks. For over a decade, Kelly has traveled all over the world while educating people on how they too can make travel a budget-friendly priority in their own lives. From starting off as a Wall Street road warrior to now being a leading figure for all things budget travel – emphasizing his keen sense for maximizing travel experiences while minimizing spending – Kelly is gearing up to make 2023 one of his own biggest years yet for traveling the world. As a new dad, he’s excited to travel to places where the U.S. dollar is strong while keeping it kid-friendly. With Asia reopening to the world, he’s already planning trips to Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Fiji, Portugal, and Jordan for culturally rich and budget-friendly experiences.

Here are The Points Guy’s top five pieces of budget travel wisdom for 2023.

1) Travelers Need To Protect Themselves

Travel
Brian Kelly

“It’s a fool’s error to think that airlines or the government are going to take care of you. There are essentially no travel protections for consumers in the United States, especially if you take a look at Europe who has really robust protections. If an airline throws your trip into chaos, at best you’re going to get a refund or maybe a hotel or a voucher. What this means for travelers is that you need to take matters into your own hands by booking all of your travel with a credit card that has travel protections. Most of the top credit cards do have travel protections and most people don’t even know it.”

“When the airlines wreak havoc on your plans, so many people go straight to the airline for reimbursement when the best place is actually your credit card company. Most travel credit cards have what is called “Trip Delay Cancellation Coverage” so when you need to get a rental car, hotel, or even to get into the airline lounge if your trip is delayed, it’ll be covered. Points are great when it comes to travel credit cards but in 2023 you gotta know the perks. For example, Chase Sapphire will reimburse you $500 per ticket in reasonable expenses if you’re delayed six hours. This would include getting into the airline lounge, meals, buying formula for your baby, and more.”

2) Utilize Technology

Travel
Brian Kelly

“When things go awry, don’t depend on the gate agent for updates. The worst thing you can do is be among the masses of people at the gate. Gate agents are usually the last people to know what’s going on with an airline. It pains me because I see so many people waiting to get information and updates from a human when the best information is available online. I use Flight Aware for all of my travel. It’s a free app and you can track your flight and inbound aircraft. This gives you a leg up from all of the other people on your flight because when you know that the incoming plane is stalled at its previous destination due to weather or air traffic issues, you can get ahead of everyone else for rebooking yourself or seeing other options. Another app you can use is Flighty. Always use your airline app but that’s not enough in 2023. These third-party apps will also tell you when the pilot files the flight plan, which is a real signal that your flight is getting ready to depart. When flights are canceled or delayed, you can be way ahead of everyone else when it comes to figuring out your next steps and rebooking with the airline, which often will result in you leaving even earlier than your delayed flight.”

“Also, standing in line to talk to someone at the airport is not sufficient in 2023. Utilize technology. A lot of airlines have chat features now that are actually pretty good. A lot of airlines now also offer social media help desks. If you have a credit card that gets you into the lounge, make sure to go in there when there’s chaos with the airline. The lounge agents are usually some of the best agents in the whole airport. They can come up with creative solutions versus the exhausted agents working with the general public in the terminal.”

“AMEX Platinum is one of the best overall travel credit cards. It’s expensive but it grants you access to Delta lounges, premium lounges, and priority pass. If you’re flying American Airlines most likely you’ll want to get the American Airlines Executive card and same with United. Getting these expensive credit cards is actually better than paying for lounge access membership directly plus you get a ton of other perks. Cheap is expensive. If you’re traveling with a no-annual-fee credit card and you think that’s going to be enough, it’s not. If you’re a frequent traveler, you absolutely should have at least a mid-tier or premium credit card. Again, you get lounge access as well as amazing flight protections and benefits that offset the annual fee. You can literally have and eat your cake in the lounge. Lounge access isn’t just about getting a free drink or snack, it’s really about getting access to the best agents while saving time.”

3) Get Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, and Clear

Travel, TSA, Security, Global Entry
Brian Kelly

“Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, and Clear are a necessity in 2023. Literally the trifecta of efficient airport navigation. The biggest is Global Entry which costs $100 for five years. What people don’t realize is that the $100 also qualifies you for TSA PreCheck, which is $80 by itself. So this means you should never pay for TSA PreCheck. Plus all of those premium credit cards usually offer a $100 Global Entry credit for free. This means that every five years you can get Global Entry for free just by having one of those premium credit cards. You’re waiting at most maybe 10 minutes in security when you have Global Entry and TSA PreCheck. What people get hung up on is that you actually have to go to the airport to get an appointment to get Global Entry or Clear. If you log on, you usually won’t see appointments for months. There’s an easy tool to get around this called Appointment Scanner. It costs $30 and it will keep checking and scanning hundreds of times a day for open appointments at your nearest airport and notify you when there’s an opening. The first day that you set an alert you’ll be getting multiple options for closer appointment dates. For people who live in New York City, there’s a Global Entry enrollment facility in Manhattan where you don’t even have to go to JFK or Newark to get your appointment.”

“Most major international airports will also offer Global Entry interviews on arrival. When you come back into the U.S. from traveling out of the country, go to the immigration desk and tell them that you’ve been pre-approved for Global Entry. They’ll ask you a couple of questions, take your fingerprint, and you’ve got your Global Entry. You then don’t even need to schedule an appointment.”

“Clear is now expedited security for around $180 every year. Clear is now at most major airports and allows you to skip to the front of the TSA PreCheck line. AMEX Platinum also gives you a major discount on Clear. As an added bonus, it also works in a lot of stadiums around the United States as well. The Yankees Stadium and other major sports centers are now using Clear where you can literally skip the line and enter without a hassle.”

4) Travel To Countries Where The U.S. Dollar Is Strong

“Inflation is going down, but overall travel is still more expensive than pre-pandemic. One way to beat this is to travel to countries where the U.S. dollar is strong. Europe was nearly 1:1 recently. People will be blown away with how far the U.S. dollar goes in South Africa against the Rand. Portugal is my favorite destination because it’s more affordable than most European countries, it’s unbelievably beautiful, and the U.S. dollar is strong. It can also be usually cheaper to fly to Portugal from New York than it is to go to Miami. Iceland is also a great country when it comes to cheap flights from the U.S. Any country that uses the Euro is a great way to make your dollars stretch in 2023. There are a lot of budget-friendly hotel options in these countries.”

5) Use Your Points!

“Use your royalty points in 2023! In general, airlines keep increasing the amount of points needed for flights so the best way to beat this is to use them. Points don’t gain value over time either so it’s best to use them when you have them. Airlines now are making every seat on a flight available to book with points. Say you want to go to Mexico and it’s 100,000 points per ticket. Always monitor the price you pay, because if it drops, the airline will allow you to cancel and rebook it using less points and refund your miles. Airlines will usually open up seats last minute with low prices or points to fill all remaining seats. So if you’ve already booked a seat using a certain number of points and more seats open up for less, you can call the airline and get refunded the point difference. You just have to be savvy enough to monitor this. There is an app called Expert Flyer that allows you to set alerts for most airlines when seats open up at a Saver Level of points than what you used. Using points also allows you to save money on your flight or hotel and you can then savor your travel experience more richly with your cash.”

Oscars Host Jimmy Kimmel Is A Little Nervous That Gambling Sites Are Setting Odds On Whether He Gets Slapped

This year’s Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday. Hooray for Judd Hirsch on his second-ever nom! Can you believe RRR only got one for Best Original Song? The big show isn’t until March 12, but the 95-year-old ceremony — which hasn’t had strong cultural relevance in a good while — is getting some attention this year thanks to an incident that happened last year. You know what we’re talking about: that slap. Will something like it happen again this year? We’re a month and a half from finding out, but already host Jimmy Kimmel is making nervous jokes about it.

On Tuesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the comic talked about some of the betting that’s been going on for who will win this year. Odds are that Everything Everywhere All at Once will trounce the likes of Tár and Elvis. Brendan Fraser in The Whale has the edge over Colin Farrell in The Banshees of Inisherin. But there’s another category of betting that caught Kimmel’s eye: one entitled “Will any host or award presenter be slapped during the show?”

Right now someone who bets $100 on “yes” will win $1200. That unnerved Kimmel a bit, and he joked “seems like they’re encouraging someone with a gambling problem to slap me.”

Kimmel wasn’t the only late-night host to make Will Smith Oscars slap jokes. Wanda Sykes, currently sitting in as a temporary Daily Show host, cracked, “If you’re wondering how they picked the nominees this year, they basically just went, ‘Hmm, let’s see, who’s not going to slap nobody?’”

Kimmel also joked about a category that rarely gets much attention: Best Animated Short. During the nomination announcements, presenter Riz Ahmed went viral when he read the name of one of the nominees, a little film called My Year of Dicks.

Kimmel admitted he’d never heard of that one, adding, “I went to look up My Year of Dicks, and now my computer won’t turn on.”

You can watch Kimmel’s monologue in the video above. The bit about the slap category begins around the 1:30 mark.

Well, It Turns Out Donald Trump Might Not Be Coming Back To Twitter After All

After he was kicked off Twitter, Donald Trump found some ways to cope with the loss of one of his favorite activities. First he became a moody blogger. When he got bored of that, he launched his own rinky-dink Twitter clone. There he has remained even though it almost certainly doesn’t give him the same rush. Recently rumors have spread that he may finally make his triumphant return to his favorite social media platform when his contract ends in June. But according to the former lawmaker who gave up his sweet House gig to work for the ex-president, that ain’t happening. Probably.

On Wednesday, Devin Nunes went on Maria Bartiromo’s Fox Business show to wearily swat away claims that his boss is ditching Truth Social.

“This is about the 10th time this story has been regurgitated over and over again and it’s kind of a classic lesson in the swamp and how fake news narratives are started,” Nunes replied.

Part of Trump’s contract stipulates that if he posts on Twitter without at least first posting on Truth Social, he’ll face a steep fine. When asked if Trump will end his exclusive contract with his own social media service after the contract is up, Nunes replied, “No, of course not.”

He then elaborated: “This is all public knowledge which over and over again we’ve told the press this, that Donald Trump can post on social media if he wants. He has a six hour exclusivity and the president’s very happy with Truth Social as we continue to grow.”

Trump’s once-permanently banned Twitter account was un-permanently banned not long after it was taken over by fellow chaos agent Elon Musk. His old tweets are back, but Trump has so far not added any new ones. Surely Nunes — who again surrendered a cushy government job to work for a man infamous for screwing over his minions — hopes he doesn’t have one of his unpredictable changes of heart.

Two couples move in together with their kids to create one big, loving ‘polyfamory’

Polyamory, a lifestyle where people have multiple romantic or sexual partners, is more prevalent in America than most people think. According to a study published in Frontiers in Psychology, one in nine Americans have been in a polyamorous relationship, and one in six say they would like to try one.

However popular the idea is, polyamory is misunderstood by a large swath of the public and is often seen as deviant. In reality, it can be a healthy lifestyle that those who practice it say has several benefits.

Taya Hartless, 28, and Alysia Rogers, 34, along with their husbands Sean, 46, and Tyler, 35, are in a polyamorous relationship and have no problem sharing their lifestyle with the public on social media. Even though they risk stigmatization for being open about their non-traditional relationships, they are sharing it with the world to make it a safer place for “poly” folks like themselves.

It all began in 2019 when the Oregon couples met in an attempt to add some spice to their sex lives. “None of us had been polyamorous before, but we all just met and fell in love,” Taya said, according to the Mirror. “We didn’t even know what polyamory was, until we started getting feelings for each other,” Alysia told Today.

“From the first night we met, we all wanted to just see more of each other. It wasn’t easy—there was a lot of hesitations around having feelings,” Taya said. “Sean was the first to point it out—he said ‘we can’t deny this is happening’. We agreed to talk it out to see what the future would look like.

The couple lived two hours from each other, so in February 2020, right before the whole world changed, they moved in together along with Tyler And Alysia’s two children, 7 and 8. “The Quad” as they call themselves came together to create what they call a “polyfamory.”

Although neither Sean and Tyler nor Alysia and Taya are dating one another, they see each other as close partners. The women have their own rooms which the men rotate in and out of each night.

The couples had a very cool way of explaining their relationship to their kids. “We told them: ‘You know mom has a boyfriend and dad had a girlfriend and we’re going to move in together, and we’re all going to be a big family and they’re going to help parent you, so we’re going to need you to treat them like you treat us— like parents,’” Tyler explained.

Since moving in together, both women have had a baby but no one knows for sure who the fathers are. “We did not regulate the biology,” Alysia said. But it doesn’t matter because all four adults share parenting responsibilities.

“At the end of the day, we’re just like any other monogamous family—there’s just four of us,” Tyler says. “Being a parent is so much more than just biology, and that’s what we’re about.”

Woman without an internal monologue explains what it’s like inside her head

The notion of living without an internal monologue is a fairly new one. Until psychologist Russell Hurlburt’s studies started coming out in the late 90s, it was widely accepted that everyone had a little voice narrating in their head. Now Hurlburt, who has been studying people’s “inner experience” for 40 years, estimates that only 30-50% of the population frequently think this way.

So what about the other 50-70%? What exactly goes on inside their heads from day to day?

In a video interview originally posted in 2020, a woman named Kirsten Carlson gave some insight into this question, sharing how not having an inner dialogue affected her reading and writing, her interactions with others and how she navigates mental challenges like anxiety and depression. It was eye-opening and mind-blowing.

Reading isn’t a particularly enjoyable activity, Carlson admitted, explaining that rather than seeing images of characters and landscapes, she only sees words.

“In my head, every sentence has a shape so you can see the shape of a sentence. Keywords will pop out and I can file those away into my concept map, so at the end of reading something I can have a concept map of the main topics that I read about. It’s not images, it’s just the words.”

That said, she is apparently a “very fast” reader.

This concept alone was hard for viewers to grasp. As one person wrote, “She’s broken my mind. I don’t even understand what I’m not understanding. I’ve never visualized a sentence in my life.”

While she “never daydreams,” Carlson does dream at night. However, she doesn’t recall any dialogue in those dreams. Carlson also shared that her alone time is always spent doing stuff like cleaning, cooking, watching Netflix and studying. I can only imagine the things I’d accomplish if I didn’t get sidetracked with existential questions like “Is a hotdog a sandwich?” If only.

While Carlson’s way of thinking might seem vastly different from the norm, there are several commonalities. Like most people, she has stores of information that she can pull up at any time. Thoughts still can keep her up at night, even if she does picture her endless to-do lists rather than hear them. And not having an inner monologue offers no protection against things like anxiety or depression, which Carlson explains manifest physically for her. Rather than feeling mental overload, her hands will start shaking, her stomach might get nauseated, and she’ll feel physically fatigued or disinterested in life.

Watch the video below:

As our understanding (and appreciation) of neurodiversity becomes more evolved, it’s likely that we’ll have even more fascinating conversations to absorb. No two people interpret the world that same way. Celebrating these differences reminds us that there is no one “right” way of thinking.

Native Siberian shares what daily life entails in the coldest village on Earth

For most of us, waking up to a temperature of minus 50 degrees would spell catastrophe. Normal life would come to a screeching halt, we’d be scrambling to deal with frozen pipes and power outages, school and work would be canceled and weather warnings would tell us not to venture outside due to frostbite risk.

But in the Yakutia region of Siberia, that’s just an average winter day where life goes on as usual.

When you live in the coldest inhabited area on Earth, your entire life is arranged around dealing with ridiculously cold temperatures. Villages don’t have running water because freezing pipes wouldn’t allow for water treatment. Kids go to school unless the temp drops below minus 55 degrees Celsius (which is then considered dangerous). Showering involves spending hours stoking a fire in the bathhouse to create a steamy, warm room.

Native Siberian Kiun B. has created a series of documentary short films detailing what daily life is like in Yakutia’s frigid winters. She was born and raised in Yakutsk, Siberia, widely recognized as the coldest city on Earth, where average winter temperatures hover around minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit. As seen in her videos, smaller villages in the Yakutia region regularly dip down into the negative 50s, with the lowest recorded temp in the Yakut village of Oymayakon reaching a mindblowing minus 96 degrees Fahrenheit.

The popularity of Kiun’s YouTube channel demonstrates how curious people are about life in such harsh conditions, as her videos have been viewed by tens of millions of people in the past year alone.

Check out this video detailing a day in the life of a family in a Yakutia village.

Can you imagine going out to use an outhouse in minus 40 degrees? Oof.

Another of Kiun’s videos goes into more detail about how people shower and do laundry in the region. You might assume they wouldn’t line-dry their laundry outdoors, but they do.

Watch:

What do people wear to protect themselves from the negative temperatures? Frostbite is a real risk, so it’s important to have the right kinds of clothing and outdoor gear to stay safe and relatively comfortable.

Kiun shared some frigid fashion norms from Yakutsk, which include traditional fur hats and boots as well as lots of layers and down jackets.

However, there are some Yakut folks who see the cold as something to embrace. For instance, this man takes an ice bath out in the elements as a morning ritual. It’s something he has worked up to—definitely not something to try on your own during a cold snap—but it still has to be painful.

(Seriously, please don’t try this at home.)

The way humans have learned to adapt to drastically different environments, from the sweltering tropics to the Arctic tundra, is incredible, and it’s fascinating to get a close-up look at how people make life work in those extremes. Thank you, Kiun B., for giving us a glimpse of what it’s like to experience life in the dead of winter in the world’s coldest inhabited places.
