SZA wrapped up 2022 with one of the year’s highlight albums, the long-anticipated SOS. In a recent interview, SZA revealed she wasn’t sure how the album would be received, saying, “I never thought in a million years that people would like it. My dad’s visiting right now, with my mom. Everybody came down to make sure I didn’t lose my mind if the album went bad once it came out. And now we’re just hanging out, ’cause it didn’t go badly!”

Indeed, people have enjoyed the LP and now the charts are reflecting that: On the new Billboard 200 chart dated December 24, SOS is No. 1, making it SZA’s first chart-topping album of her career. To claim the spot, it overtook Metro Boomin’s Heroes & Villains, which debuted at No. 1 last week. Previously, 2017’s Ctrl topped out at No. 3 while SZA’s 2014 Z EP peaked at No. 39.

Star power played at least some part in the album’s success: People were really excited about Phoebe Bridgers featuring on “Ghost In The Machine” and the album also features appearances from Travis Scott, Don Toliver, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. It was almost busier than that, as SZA wanted to get Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Drake, Finneas, Frank Ocean, Halsey, Harry Styles, Kacey Musgraves, Kendrick Lamar, Olivia Rodrigo, Rosalía, Tyler The Creator, and others on the album, too.

Today, vegetable oils make up 20% of our daily calories and are the most consumed food in the world, after rice and wheat. Put simply, vegetable oils are everywhere, from nearly all packaged foods like chips, crackers, salad dressings, and coffee creamers to most restaurant meals, whether it’s fast food or Michelin-starred.

Oils extracted from crops like sunflower, soybean, palm, and canola were only widely introduced to our diets in the last century and have experienced a meteoric rise in prevalence. In the United States, the consumption of soybean oil alone has grown 1,000-fold since the early 20th century.

In fact, the single greatest change in the human diet since the onset of widespread chronic illness and obesity is our increased consumption of vegetable oils. While diet-related chronic diseases were once rare, 60% of Americans now have a chronic disease such as diabetes or heart disease.

Vegetable oils, which contain high levels of omega-6 fats, have been linked to a laundry list of health issues, including inflammation, obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and more. Meanwhile, vegetable oils are leading drivers of mass deforestation, biodiversity loss, soil erosion, water consumption, and other environmental problems.

Currently, the world devotes 20-30% of all agricultural lands (an area the size of India) to vegetable oil crops. To put that in perspective, more land is devoted to vegetable oil crops than to all vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, roots and tubers combined.

As a result of all the land dedicated to these oil crops, vegetable oil crops are two of the top three drivers of deforestation. And unfortunately, there is no end in sight. Vegetable oils remain the fastest growing sub-sector of agriculture, and their production is expected to grow 30% over the next four years.

The solution to the massive problem of vegetable oil production and consumption may lie in the ancient culinary art of fermentation. While fermentation has been used for thousands of years to produce foods like cheese, wine, yogurt, and bread, some companies are using fermentation to make healthier oils and fats, with a fraction of the environmental footprint. Cultured Oil from Zero Acre Farms is one such product.

Just as there are microbial communities, like sourdough and wine cultures, which convert sugars into entirely new foods, there are also oil cultures. An oil culture converts sugar into the healthy fats that make up products like Cultured Oil.

While vegetable oils introduced unprecedented levels of omega-6 fats, which have been linked to health issues, companies like Zero Acre Farms are taking cues from what humans evolved to eat.

Thanks to fermentation, companies like Zero Acre Farms can produce environmentally-friendly oils with extremely low amounts of the inflammatory fat omega-6, and high amounts of the healthy fats that humans have eaten for hundreds of thousands of years. Products produced by fermentation, like Cultured Oil, for example, contain higher levels of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats that have always been abundant in our diets and are routinely shown to improve health outcomes in human studies.

The beauty of fermentation is in its ability to displace vegetable oils at scale by delivering products that are better than vegetable oils in every way. That means products that aren’t just healthier or more sustainable but also better for our taste buds, home cooks, chefs, and ultimately our wallets.

The online launch of Cultured Oil, and the use of fermentation as a tool to produce healthier, more sustainable oils and fats, marks an important step towards a healthier world, free from destructive vegetable oils.

Only Tom Cruise can take a death-defying stunt and somehow make it incredibly wholesome.

On Dec 18, Cruise released a video while on the set of “Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One.” By “on set,” I mean he was thousands of feet above Earth looking down at a beach in South Africa.

The action star used the moment to share some love with fans of another high-octane franchise. And he did it in the most epic, yet charming, way imaginable that, let’s be honest, only Tom Cruise could pull off.

“I didn’t want the year to end without thanking you all for coming out to the theaters, and thank you for supporting Top Gun: Maverick,” he yells at the top of his lungs. He then proceeded to skydive while continuing his “thank-you.”

“Where was I? Oh yeah, thank you!” he quipped. “Thank you for allowing us to entertain you. It truly is the honor of a lifetime.”

He signed off by saying, “Happy holidays … we’ll see you at the movies,” before spinning away through the sky.

“Top Gun: Maverick” grossed a whopping $1.488 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2022, the second film released since the COVID-19 pandemic to gross $1 billion and the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s career.

The fact that he chose to acknowledge the audience who helped make that achievement possible endeared him to people even more.

“This was such a heartwarming message! Thank you for caring for and respecting your audience, Tom! That’s why the people love you. Love Top Gun Maverick!” wrote one person.

Another added, “Not going to lie, Tom Cruise paying his respect to the audience who supports him got me tearing up a little. Appreciate those who acknowledge their audience and supporters.”

Others were just amazed at Cruise’s amount of chill during the whole thing.

“l love how he is jumping from a plane and talking to us like its part of his daily routine. Truly a legend,” commented one person.

Seriously, for a dude thousands of feet up in the air, he remains undeniably down to earth throughout the video.

Over the same weekend, Cruise released another video showcasing nearly 10 minutes of wild behind-the-scenes footage of a stunt in the upcoming “Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One.”

In what he calls “the biggest stunt in cinematic history,” Cruise rides a motorcycle off a cliff and then turns it into a BASE jump.

It took years of preparation and training, but as he would tell you—it was all well worth it.

“It all comes down to one thing—the audience,” he says in the clip.

Cruise’s dedication to his craft—and to his fans—makes his movies stand out in a sea of CGI-filled blockbusters. He brings a certain level of magic, intensity, fearlessness and (most of all) love to everything he does. That kind of commitment is impactful whether you’re jumping out of airplanes or simply existing as a mere mortal.

Almost three decades after Scream, the sixth installment in the series is heading to theaters, though things are looking different for the core crew. For starters, original lead Neve Campbell confirmed that she would not be returning to the series, despite starring in 2022’s sequel. Campbell candidly expressed her disappointment, which ultimately came down to salary disagreements.

Despite losing its beloved lead, Scream is still shaping up to be a killer slasher, thanks to the inclusion of scream queen Jenna Ortega, and to the fact that Ghostface is now being forced to ride the subway. At least he’s wearing a mask!

Here are all the details:

Plot

Scream VI follows the group from 2022’s Scream (not to be confused with 1997’s Scream…though it is literally the same name) as they leave the cursed town of Woodsboro for a “fresh chapter,” only they decide to go to New York City. Historically, New York City is not the best place for franchise villains to head when they are six chapters into a series, though Friday The 13th: Jason Takes Manhattan was the eighth installment, so maybe it will work out in their favor.

Reprising her role from Scream (2022), this year’s horror it-girl Jenna Ortega will also lead Scream VI, which she says has the most “aggressive and violent version of Ghostface” out of all of the movies. He will fit in perfectly in New York City!

Ortega will be joined by Courtney Cox, who is reprising her role as Gale Weathers from the original murders. Also added to the mix is Hayden Panettiere’s character Kirby Reed, who survived the events of Scream 4 in 2011, along with Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Samara Weaving, Dermot Mulroney, and others.

Release Date

The installment will hit theaters on March 10th, 2023. There is no streaming date yet, though it will likely land on Paramount+ at some point next year.

It’s rare that a television show can be so violent yet so universally loved, but Squid Game managed to pull it off! Netflix’s biggest hit explores class politics and capitalism with a splash of violence and a whole lot of death. A group of nearly 500 players is required to go through a number of challenges based on children’s games in order to win over $30 million, with deadly consequences if they lose. The show racked up a whopping 14 Emmy nominations and inspired a real-life Netflix reality competition which may not be a good idea, but we’ll see what happens. Season two is expected to begin production in 2023.

You is based on the spooky novel of the same name, following Joe (later Will, then Jonathan… this man is busy) as a lowly bookstore clerk who happens to dabble in some light stalking and gratuitous violence. But Penn Badgley is just so charming, it’s easy to get sucked into the world of Joe Goldberg and his silly little books. We can only hope that he will eventually have a very satisfying death… just after a few more seasons of creepiness.

These are very normal problems! But the quirky family will surely tug at your heartstrings every once in a while when they are not screaming at each other.

Netflix has had a lot of success when it comes to TV shows based on popular comics, and The Umbrella Academy is the shining star. Based on Gerard Way’s own dark comic (yes, the guy from My Chemical Romance) the series follows an ensemble cast of estranged adopted siblings who come together after the death of their father…and they all have very eclectic superpowers, like the ability to bend reality or mind control, you know, all of that good stuff. The series has been renewed for an upcoming fourth and final season, but Netflix hasn’t ruled out the possibility of spinoff shows.

And it also helped bring Tituss Burgess into the spotlight, which is always a good thing.

It’s like the existential version of Groundhog Day, but with much better outfits.

Full of bright neons and sequin suits, GLOW shows the ladies as they train to become to strongest (and most gorgeous) ladies in the women’s Southern California wrestling circuit, while participating in various shenanigans and spending hours on those updos. While the show never got the ending it deserved, Alison Brie has a good track record for getting movie endings to her former shows, so there is still hope!

Yes, it’s a bit of a warning that we are a little too reliant on media, but they also have fun little songs, so we can overlook the scary parts!

Young Thug might be locked up for the time being, but that won’t prevent him from putting out more new music in the near future. Kid Cudi, fresh off the release of Entergalactic, teased a couple of collaborations he’d recorded with the Atlanta trap rap veteran in 2021. “I got 2 songs w Thug I did last year,” he wrote. “1 of them goin on the new album the other he’ll use. These songs are fuckin INSANE. Im tellin u. U have no idea.”

Despite saying he was planning to retire from music earlier this year, Cudi has been tweeting about recording a new album for the past few weeks. He revealed his plans on Twitter at the beginning of December after tweeting about making “6 new songs in 3 days” at the end of November. “11 songs in 5 days,” he wrote. “My goal was to do a whole new album worth of songs this week. 12 was my goal. Might get 14.”

Young Thug, meanwhile, was recently in court ahead of his upcoming trial on racketeering charges when a supporter apparently hijacked the Zoom stream by which the attorneys were remotely attending to advocate for his freedom by appearing stark naked. Thug faces a litany of charges including illegal weapons possession and street racing as the Fulton County District Attorney alleges Thug’s leadership of a hybrid street gang operating under the guise of a record label.

Right before the start of the final 2022 FIFA World Cup match yesterday, Shakira shed light on a soccer player who is facing the death penalty in Iran. The Colombian superstar, who is known for her World Cup anthems, used her platform on social media to amplify the story of Amir Nasr-Azadani.

In the past few World Cups, Shakira had been a strong presence thanks to her music. She performed the Bamboo version of “Hips Don’t Lie” at the closing ceremony of the 2006 competition. In 2014, the Brazil remix of her song “La La La” was selected as the World Cup anthem that year. Shakira reportedly did not participate in the World Cup this year due to Qatar’s history of human rights violations.

A few minutes before Argentina was set to face and defeat France in the final match, Shakira wanted to shift some focus to Nasr-Azadani’s story. On Twitter, she posted about the Iranian soccer player who is on death row for participating in a pro-women’s rights protest in his country.

“Today at the final of the World Cup, I only hope the players on the field and the whole world remembers that there’s a man and fellow footballer called Amir Nasr, on death row, only for speaking in favor of Women’s rights,” Shakira wrote. “I hope there’s more than a minute of silence in our hearts to remember what’s important and more than one voice united screaming for what is just.”

According to Newsweek, the protest that Nasr-Azadani was involved with on September 16 was described as an “armed riot” by Iranian authorities. Three security agents died in the protest. The demonstration was in response to the death of Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody after being arrested for an alleged hijab-wearing violation.

Nasr-Azadani was arrested in last month for his participation in the protest and he faces allegations of “waging war against God.” He is reportedly set to be executed by hanging for the allegations.

Shakira wasn’t the only one who voiced her concern for Nasr-Azadani’s wellbeing. FIFPRO, the International Federation of Professional Footballers, also released a statement condemning his death sentence.

“FIFPRO is shocked and sickened by reports that professional footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani faces execution in Iran after campaigning for women’s rights and basic freedom in his country,” the organization wrote in a tweet. “We stand in solidarity with Amir and call for the immediate removal of his punishment.”

This year’s long-awaited Pavement reunion is turning out to be more unpredictable than anyone could have expected. Not only did we get the band’s first tour in over a decade, but additional experiences like a Pavement museum and even a musical (dubbed Slanted! Enchanted! A Pavement Musical of course) delighted aging hipsters everywhere. Nobody could have predicted that the Stockton-formed slacker rock band would get this kind of treatment, but we’re absolutely here for it. But wait, there’s more! A movie. That’s right, a Pavement movie. And director Alex Ross Perry says it’s all part of his masterplan for the band.

In an interview with The New Yorker, Perry (who also directed the musical) said he was approached by Pavement’s label, Matador Records, three years ago about a film with a strange directive from singer Stephen Malkmus: To hire a screenwriter, but one that could operate without an actual screenplay. “No one knew what that meant,” Perry said. So a rather insane idea will be getting a rather insane interpretation from Perry for the movie, who said it will be “Legitimate, ridiculous, real, fake, idiotic, cliché, illogical.” Perry’s guiding light for making the film — which is apparently part tour documentary biopic, part mockumentary, part clips of the musical, and part essential canon — was this: “What if Pavement, the Pynchonian rock group that never had a platinum record, was the most important band of all time?”

Ummm…ok? But cool! And while the musical’s limited performances have come and gone. The movie will arrive at a yet-to-be-specified date.

Jalen Hurts is among the leading NFL MVP candidates through 15 weeks of the regular season, as he has led the Eagles to a 13-1 record (the best in the NFL), powering one of the most balanced offenses in the league.

This coming Sunday, the Eagles are heading to Dallas to face the Cowboys where a win would lock up the NFC East title for Philadelphia as well as the No. 1 seed (and the only first round bye) in the NFC playoff standings. However, in order to secure that position in Week 16, the Eagles may have to go without Hurts, as he injured his throwing shoulder on a third quarter hit against the Bears. While there were some rumblings among Eagles fans that the concern was a serious injury, word broke on Monday that Hurts has a shoulder sprain that is not considered a long-term injury, but that it may force Gardner Minshew into service on Sunday.

Considering the Eagles are one win away from locking up the 1-seed thanks to their head-to-head win over the Vikings and have three games to get there, resting Hurts against a Dallas team with a strong pass rush might not be the worst idea. It is not a must-win, as they’ll have home games against the Saints and Giants left to get that one needed win to lock up the first round bye, and if rest would buy him time to get closer to 100 percent, that’s the only choice to make for a team with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations.

It would, of course, put a bit of a damper on one of the best games of Week 16 on paper, and the betting markets have already shifted Dallas from a 1.5-point favorite to 5-point favorites amid this reporting.

With Marvel’s Secret Invasion on track for it’s 2023 premiere on Disney+, the biggest question is how will the new series handle the shape-shifting Skrulls following their appearance in Captain Marvel. In a significant shift from the comics, the Skrulls were revealed to be a peaceful band of refugees who sided with Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to ward off the villainous Kree who had decimated their home planet.

Going into Secret Invasion, the Skrull General Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) has already been seen working closely with Nick Fury in Spider-Man: Far From Home, so the alien race already appears to be allies. Or are they? According to Marvel’s description of the series, there’s a faction of Skrulls who aren’t so keen on living peacefully on Earth. They’ve been placing themselves in positions of power, and like the comic book event of the same name, literally anyone in the MCU could be a Skrull.

Of course, this raises suspicions about the Skrulls from Captain Marvel. Are they actually good and have nothing to do with the events of Secret Invasion, or were they behind the whole thing? Without seeing the series, there’s no way to know how this will shake out. If it’s anything like the source material, the aftermath will have serious repercussions for the entire MCU as characters are forced to grapple with the fact that some of their closest friends, allies, and heroes were anything but.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Secret Invasion stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos—characters who first met in Captain Marvel. They are joined by Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emilia Clarke, and Olivia Colman. The crossover event series showcases a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years.
