Geno Smith Gave A Great Answer When Asked About Whether It Was ‘Tough’ Being A Backup For So Long

Back in 2012, for five weeks, Geno Smith sat atop the college football world. He led his West Virginia Mountaineers to a spotless, 5-0 record, which propelled them to a No. 5 ranking in the polls. Smith, behind 1,996 yards, 24 touchdowns (zero interceptions), and an 81.4 percent completion rate, was the comfortable Heisman favorite. That strong start also vaulted him up NFL Draft boards.

But the next week, Smith and West Virginia were routed, 56-30, by an unranked Texas Tech squad. They continued to sputter en route to a 7-6 record, a string of games that revealed some flaws and saw him end up as the 39th overall pick to the New York Jets. Smith started 29 games his first two years with the Jets before being relegated to a backup role over the next six seasons and even was out of the league in 2019.

A decade after his senior year breakout, Smith is in the spotlight again, spearheading a surprising 7-5 Seattle Seahawks team and playing like a top-10 quarterback. He even leads all NFC QBs in Pro Bowl votes. Looking the part of a bona fide star, Smith was provided an opportunity to reflect on what most would consider a challenging and tumultuous journey to this point. Only, Smith characterizes his path more optimistically.

“I can’t say it’s tough, man, because I’ve been so blessed,” Smith told reporters at a recent press conference. “My tough time would be a dream for someone else. So, I’ll never look at it as something that was too hard for me or really tough because, throughout that time, I was still enjoying life and still in the NFL.”

It’s a pretty incredible bit of perspective from Smith, who seems so genuinely happy in his current position and recent success. Smith, 32, has 3,169 yards, 22 touches to six interceptions and a 72.7 percent completion rate this season. He’s also seventh in DVOA. He’s been nothing short of tremendous and has likely solidified himself as a long-term starter, at least for the next few years.

Senate unanimously passes ‘Tiger King’ bill that bans private ownership of big cats

Netflix’s “Tiger King” will go down in history as the collective distraction that helped America get through the dark, depressing days of early COVID-19 lockdowns. The show followed the true story of the feud between private zoo owner Joe Exotic, the self-described “gay, gun-carrying, redneck with a mullet,” and Carole Baskin, founder of Big Cat Rescue.

Exotic is currently serving out a 21-year prison sentence for animal rights abuses and hiring someone to kill Baskin.

The show was a raucous look inside the world of big cat owners and brought a lot of attention to the animal abuse that runs rampant in the industry. The light it shed on the industry was so bright it led Congress to take action. The Senate unanimously passed the Big Cat Public Safety Act on December 6. The House had already passed the bill in July.

The White House has signaled that President Biden will sign the bill into law.

The legislation prohibits keeping tigers, lions and other big cat species as pets and bans public contact with these animals, including paid interactive experiences like cub petting. Those who currently own big cats will be able to keep their animals so long as they register them with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and do not allow them to have direct contact with the public.

There are an estimated 7,000 captive tigers in America living either in zoos or with private owners.

The bill was originally crafted by Baskin and her husband Howard in 2011 and was introduced to Congress every year since, but never got any traction until “Tiger King” was released in 2020.

“I am harder to intimidate and kill than some thought!” Carole Baskin joked in a video celebrating her legislative victory. “The passage of the bill is the successful culmination of many years of battling against narcissistic, abusive, dangerous men who dominated the cruel trade and did everything they could to stop its passage, including wanting to intimidate, discredit and even kill me,” Baskin added.

“Within a decade, most of the thousands of big cats living this way will have passed away, and in 20 years, no big cats will be living in this kind of misery,” she continued.

The passage of the legislation was also applauded by The Humane Society.

“An extraordinarily cruel era for big cats in the U.S. finally comes to an end with the passage of the Big Cat Public Safety Act. We’ve been fighting for this moment for years because so many so-called ‘Tiger Kings’ have been breeding tigers and other big cats to use them for profit,” Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, said in a statement.

The legislation is a big win for the animals and people as well. The Humane Society reports that since 1990, there have been more than 400 incidents involving captive big cats, and five children and 19 adults have been killed and hundreds of others injured.

Many objected to how Joe Exotic was celebrated for the few weeks that “Tiger King” ruled popular culture because he was, in the end, a man who profited from animals’ misery. Now, we can look back at the show’s popularity and see that it’s played a positive role in protecting these majestic animals from abuse for the foreseeable future.

Jack Black’s Tenacious D rocked out with an impressive version of the Beatles’ ‘Abbey Road’ medley

The medley that closes out the second side of the Beatles’ “Abbey Road” album is one of the most impressive displays of musicianship in the band’s storied career. It also provided the perfect send-off before the band’s official breakup months later, ending with the lyrics, “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.”

In 1969, “Abbey Road” was the last record the group made together, although “Let it Be,” recorded earlier that year, was released in 1970.

At first, the medley was just a clever way for the band to use a handful of half-finished tunes, but when it came together it was a rousing, grandiose affair.

Arranged by Paul McCartney and producer George Martin, the medley weaves together five songs written by McCartney, “You Never Give Me Your Money,” “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window,” “Golden Slumbers,” “Carry That Weight” and “The End,” and three by John Lennon, “Sun King,” “Mean Mr. Mustard” and “Polythene Pam.”

Fifteen seconds after the medley and the album’s conclusion, there is a surprise treat, McCartney’s 22-second “Her Majesty,” which wound up on the record as an accident.

Jack Black and Kyle Gass, collectively known as Tenacious D, recently reimagined two of the songs in the medley, “You Never Give Me Your Money” and “The End,” for acoustic guitars for a performance on SiriusXM’s Octane Channel. Like everything with Tenacious D, it showed off the duo’s impressive musical chops as well as their fantastic sense of humor.

The truncated version of the medley was also a wonderful tribute to the incredible work the Beatles did 53 years ago.

A Republican Congresswoman Turned Into A Sobbing Mess Because She Was So Upset Over A Bill To Protect Gay Marriage

Republicans are crying about marriage equality again—literally, this time.

GOP Rep. Vicky Hartzler of Missouri broke down into a sobbing puddle of homophobia as she begged her colleagues to strike down the Respect for Marriage Act, a bipartisan bill that would protect the rights of same-sex couples wanting to get hitched. Hartzler became visibly verklempt over the idea that non-straights might retain the ability to sign a piece of paper and declare themselves lawfully wed thanks to the bill, tearing up as she attempted to protect the sanctity of an institution with a 50% failure rate.

“Mr. Speaker, I’ll tell you my priority,” Hartzler said before getting choked up. “Protect religious liberty. Protect people of faith. And protect Americans who believe in the true meaning of marriage. I hope and pray that my colleagues will find the courage to join me in opposing this misguided and this dangerous bill.”

If we’re throwing around words like “courage” and “misguided,” we need to talk about that horrendous faux leather jacket, Vicky.

Unfortunately for Hartzler — and fortunately for everyone who believes members of the LGBTQ+ community deserve to be treated like actual human beings worthy of fundamental everyday rights — the bill did pass, despite her theatrical waterworks. We’re sure she’ll return to her home state with her head held high in the knowledge that her final act as a member of Congress — she lost her recent midterm election — was an overly emotional display of crocodile tears that the Gays of Tik Tok will stitch for the lolz.

Thanks for your service, Vicky.

Of Course Mariah Carey Has Four Christmas Trees In Her House

Recently Mariah Carey, the undisputed Queen of Christmas (despite insisting she doesn’t call herself that), revealed that she owns not one, not two, but four Christmas trees. Are we surprised?

Carey stopped by The Late Show to chat with host Stephen Colbert for a special holiday edition of his popular segment, “The Colbert Questionert.”

When picking out tree toppers, Carey said she prefers both an angel and a star. One might wonder how she could put both on top of one tree but don’t worry — she has four Christmas trees. She can make it work.

The songstress also shared that she has loved the holidays since childhood, but because of her tough upbringing, she was never able to enjoy them as she can now.

“I always wanted Christmas to be perfect, and it never was,” Carey told Colbert. “So when I was finally able to provide for myself, my friends, and then later my kids, who are 11, we have the most festive Christmas ever.”

Additionally, Carey noted that her upbringing and love for the holidays have impacted her pathway into Christmas-themed music, saying that it comes from a “longing to have some normalcy and peace.”

Later this month, Carey will host her own two-hour special on CBS, Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas To All!, which will be filmed during her December 13 performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City before being released on December 20.

Check out Mariah Carey on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert above.

The Alchemist Is Combining His EPs ‘Bread’ And ‘Lunch Meat’ To Make An ‘Alchemist Sandwich’

Back in 2018, LA hip-hop producer The Alchemist released a pair of well-received EPs, Bread and Lunch Meat. Supported by singles like the Earl Sweatshirt-featuring “E. Coli,” the two EPs kickstarted a multi-year run in which the resurgent beatmaker dropped a string of successful collaborative projects with rappers like Conway The Machine, Armand Hammer, Boldy James, and of course, the Grammy-nominated Alfredo with Freddie Gibbs.

The prolific producer has been busy since dropping Bread and Lunch Meat, but that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten his past work. Today, he teased a new project, The Alchemist Sandwich, which will combine the previously released EPs with a pair of new songs to form a more complete whole. Names listed in the credits include Action Bronson, Benny The Butcher, Black Thought, Boldy James, Conway The Machine, Earl Sweatshirt, Meyhem Lauren, Roc Marciano, Schoolboy Q, Styles P, and Westside Gunn. What a lineup. He hasn’t given a release date, but it’s probably sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, fans are still wondering about the status of a pair of projects that were teased recently, yet have yet to surface. Last year, Vince Staples said that he had recorded enough verses for a full project with Alchemist and Earl, yet was waiting on them to put it out. Alchemist said that the Staples project was more or less complete. Alc also revealed he’d hidden a full Sweatshirt project on YouTube under a fake name. For now, though, his Alchemist Sandwich will have to be enough to keep fans … ahem … fed until his next body of work.

Please Enjoy The Trailer For The Disturbingly Named And Straight Up Disturbing ‘Glee’ Docuseries, ‘The Price Of Glee’

“In May 2009, 10 young actors made their TV debut on Glee,” says text in the trailer for ID’s upcoming docuseries The Price of Glee. “By 2020, all of them would be famous, and three of them would be dead.”

The three-episode docuseries follows the dark side of the Glee musical comedy/drama, which ran on FOX from 2009-2015. Three members of the series’ original cast have since died, and the series will explore these deaths and how Glee had an impact on their lives, and maybe also their deaths, somehow. Seems like a stretch, though.

In July 2013, Corey Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, died at the age of 31 in a Vancouver hotel room as the result of a toxic combination of heroin and alcohol. Monteith, who was in a relationship with on-screen love interest Lea Michele at the time of his death, had discussed his history of addiction and substance abuse in the past.

In 2015, Mark Salling, who played Puck, was arrested for the possession of child pornography. A search warrant found more than 50,000 images of child pornography, downloaded between April and December 2015. He pled guilty in 2017, and was expected to serve prison time. Salling died by suicide in January 2018, a little over a month before his March 2018 sentencing date. He was 35.

Naya Rivera, who played the beloved queer character Santana Lopez, died in July 2020 by drowning, after a multi-day search. Rivera set out on a boat on Lake Piru in California lake with her then-4-year-old son. Rivera was 33 years old.

The Price of Glee, which seems like it will make a convoluted attempt to blame all of these deaths on Glee, airs on Investigation Discovery (ID) from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. ET/PT on Jan. 16, 2023. The series will be available to stream on Discovery+.
