‘With gratitude, optimism is sustainable’—Michael J. Fox accepts honorary Oscar with moving speech

Following his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease back in the early ’90s, beloved “Back to the Future” star Michael J. Fox became an unwavering advocate for others living with the condition. His Michael J. Fox Foundation, founded in 2000, has become the leading provider of funds for Parkinson’s research in the world. A large chunk of that research goes into investigating potential cures for the disease.

His contributions to Parkinson’s research were highlighted at the 13th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday, Nov. 19, in Los Angeles as a recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which honors individuals “whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.”

As the now-retired actor took to the stage to accept his honorary Oscar, he delivered a speech full of emotion, grace and a sense of humor that shoots straight to the heart.

After an outpouring of applause, Fox made the quip, “You’re making me shake, stop it.” In case anyone was wondering—his effortless charm is still completely intact.

He then went into the “serious business of the speech,” expressing his gratitude for the award. Specifically, he thanked Gary David Goldberg, his “boss, friend and mentor” from the sitcom “Family Ties,” who introduced him to the concept “for whom much is given, much is required.” He also shared stories from his life and career—from dropping out of high school to pursue a job in Hollywood, to getting his GED at around 30 at the bequest of his son, and everywhere in between.

Of his Parkinson’s diagnosis, he recalled that “the hardest part was grappling with the certainty of the diagnosis and the uncertainty of the situation. The diagnosis was definite and the progress was indefinite and uncertain.”

Despite this uncertainty, over the years the support he received from his wife Tracy (who “made it clear that she was with me for the duration”) would prove “transformative.”

“It struck me that everything I had been given—success, my life with Tracy, my family—had prepared me for this profound opportunity and responsibility … I referred to Parkinson’s as the gift that keeps on taking … but it truly became a gift.”

He remarked that once he became engaged in learning about the disease, it became clear that his previous success could be a catalyst for helping raise awareness and eventually gain answers for a cure. Thus his Michael J. Fox Foundation was created.

Fox concluded his speech praising the work of those diligently working at his foundation, saying, “My optimism is fueled by my gratitude. With gratitude, optimism is sustainable.”

This unwavering optimism in particular struck viewers, who filled the comments section of YouTube with heartfelt appreciation. In particular, those who either have the disease or have a loved one affected by it shared how inspired they were. One person wrote, “In March this year I lost my father who struggled with Parkinson’s for more than a decade. All he wanted was to have some dignity around those that knew him. Michael J. Fox not only has that, but respect from both his peers in the entertainment business and anyone and everyone that understands what they are going through, but will still love them all the same. Thank you for your courage and example to millions of others that suffer the same disease globally.”

Others were moved simply by Fox’s emotional resilience. “What a mensch!,” wrote one person. “He is truly a great man. Despite his health issues he has maintained his good humor. I’m sure his positivity has sustained him well beyond the doctors’ initial prognosis of his illness. Long live Michael J. Fox!”

Fox’s speech is a testament to the power of finding hope and purpose even in times of adversity. He remains beloved in the hearts of fans not just for adding magic and laughter to our childhoods, but for constantly spreading kindness throughout the world. He deserves every bit of goodness that he gets.

Wacky Pillow Man Mike Lindell Says He Has ‘Cyber Evidence’ That All The Elections Republicans Lost In AZ, PA, And MI Were Rigged: ‘They’re Caught!’

Donald Trump announcing his intention to run for president a third time in 2024 might just be the closest we ever get to him conceding the 2020 election. Because, if he did legitimately win in 2020, how could he run for a third term? While we’ll leave the mysteries of how Trump’s brain works to science and the history books, his newly announced candidacy seems to maybe have prompted Mike Lindell to move on with his life, too. And by “move on,” we mean re-channel his obsession with election fraud in 2020 to a new obsession with election fraud in 2022.

On Monday, former federal prosecutor Ron Filipkowski shared video of Lindell from the MyPillow scion’s own FrankSpeech TV, where he dropped the enormous bombshell that he and his trusty team of election investigators had “cyber evidence” that basically every midterm election that a Republican lost to a Democrat was rigged:

We have cyber evidence of a 37,000 vote flip on the Kari Lake race on Thursday after the election. We have all the Edison data that came in in real time, that came through on all races, including [Mark] Finchem, Blake Masters — they all won, ok? They all won!

Though Lindell promised (and not for the first time) that he was about to “expose everything” and claimed that “they’re caught!” of whomever he believes tampered with the voting machines, we never really actually got the evidence (again, not for the first time). And presumably that’s because it does not exist.

Instead, the kooky pillow guy just spewed a lot of verbal diarrhea about how the best way to prove that there was election fraud is for all of the Republicans who won their races to… request a do-over?

“Anybody out there that won,” Lindell said (it’s cute that he thinks anyone is watching him), “any Republican that won in this country… should demand a new election themselves.” And not just a new election, but one in which we only use paper ballots and that each vote is hand-counted. Because in Lindell’s mind — which spent decades being abused by drugs and alcohol — that’s the only way to prove that our elections are rigged. Even though he supposedly has the “cyber evidence” to show that already.

Just say no, kids.

Stephen King Cemented His Status As King Of The Dad Jokes Before Pointing Toward An Even Worse Joke Maker On Twitter

Horror King Stephen King is also king of the dad jokes in addition to being an English muffin addict (so many layers.) This new addition to his collection of titles begins with a mention of how he’s not been thrilled about Elon Musk’s Twitter-boss behavior. The man who knows how to write a villain brought us a literary reference when the deal became concrete, and King hasn’t let up since with his disapproval, especially after Musk actually attempted to haggle over the price of now-easily-attained verified status.

Even though King remains a Tesla fan, he’s not letting Musk’s unleashing of right-wing chaos on Twitter stand. King started this newest round of swings with a so-bad-it-might-be-good dad joke.

“I had to take my biscuits to the doctor,” King tweeted to begin. “They felt crummy.”

He swiftly admitted, “Sorry. That one was pretty bad.”

Who’s got worse jokes, though? “Speaking of bad jokes, Elon Musk says Trump can get back on Twitter.”

King is certainly not alone in his perspective. Patton Oswalt recently expressed a similar viewpoint about how Musk tries far too hard to be funny. He even continued to tell his not-great jokes while laying off around half of Twitter’s staff, which led to a Space Karen projection that was undeniably funny. Everyone’s got jokes!

Will Mark Zuckerberg Step Down As Meta CEO After Renewed Calls For Him To Do So?

As Mark Zuckerberg continues to face scrutiny after his heavy investment in the “Metaverse” led to 11,000 layoffs in mid-November, employees are reportedly questioning his leadership and accusing the CEO of significantly damaging the company. After the Facebook founder announced the layoffs and apologized that he “got this wrong,” employees took to an anonymous forum, Blind, and proceeded to drag Zuckerberg for making Meta feel like the “Hunger Games.” Others called for a change of leadership and commented that Zuckerberg’s future at the company is “uncertain.”

Via Business Insider:

“The Metaverse will be our slow death,” one user, who called themselves a senior software developer, posted on Wednesday. They added: “Mark Zuckerberg will single-handedly kill a company with the meta-verse.”

While Zuckerberg did receive some positive reviews, the overall sentiment was clear: The Metaverse was a mistake. “I thought it was a data-driven company but actually it is one man’s gut feeling and emotions-driven,” one user wrote. “Nobody can overwrite his decision.” Several of the employee posts called for “layoffs in executive level” and questioned Zuckerberg’s direction. “Leadership is having no clue,” another user wrote.

The mass layoffs following the lackluster reception of the Metaverse is not the first time that Zuckerberg has faced calls for his resignation. According to The Wrap, major Facebook investors turned on Zuckerberg in 2018 after the social media company revealed an explosive and embarrassing data breach that affected millions of users. However, despite some heavy hitters demanding Zuckerberg’s head, he holds a “majority of supervoting shares.”

In short, unless Zuckerberg votes to make himself step down, it ain’t happening.

Anderson .Paak’s NSFW New ‘The Simpsons’ Tattoo Is Supremely Bizarre But Perfectly Cromulent

People from all walks of life get tattoos, so naturally, there’s a near-infinite variety of skin-adorning designs out there. Over the weekend, though, Anderson .Paak got what has to be one of the strangest ones, especially to fans of The Simpsons.

On November 20, Paak shared a post which he captioned, “RATE MY NEW TAT!” The gallery post shows off videos and photos of the tattoo, which is on Paak’s right bicep and is of a surreal combination of Marge and Homer Simpson. It shows Marge lifting her shirt, but her torso has been partially replaced with Homer’s head. However, Marge’s breasts have been made to look like Homer’s eyes. All in all, while it’s a bit odd, it’s a perfectly cromulent tattoo.

The past few months have actually been rich when it comes to musician tattoo news. Lil Nas X just got his first one ever, screaming in agony all the while. A tattoo removal studio recently offered to get rid of people’s Kanye West tattoos free of charge. Post Malone recently got another face tattoo, a big one on his forehead. Grimes is also considering a face tattoo, albeit a really different kind. Finally, this summer, it was revealed that Cardi B got a face tattoo.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Brent Faiyaz Leads An Orchestra Under The Lights In His Performance Of ‘All Mine’ On ‘The Tonight Show’

Brent Faiyaz appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon yesterday (November 21) to bless audiences with a performance of “All Mine,” off his recently released record, Wasteland.

The scene opens with Faiyaz conducting his band as the string instruments set the sonic bar high. The second Faiyaz starts to sing, the audience cheers. From there, he gives a soulful take that equally matches the effort of the orchestra and instrumentalists behind him.

“We both still young, so what’s the rush? / The night is young and we not drunk enough / You come around if I don’t do too much / We had our downs but we had way more ups,” Faiyaz notes on the track.

Also impressive in this performance of “All Mine” is the stage lighting setup. Instead of opting to flood the fans in the crowd with over-the-top stage design, the simple yellow lights are timed to the beat. This finds them getting dimmed on the verses to match the energy of the song. Oh yeah, and there’s also fog — because that is always essential.

“I’m excited to visually bring these songs to life, these records to life,” Faiyaz previously told Insider about his visual visions. “I think that’s going to play a huge part in how people receive this music. It’s all about the message that you portray.”

Soft Lighting Enthusiast Kari Lake Is Still Pushing Wild Conspiracy Theories About Her Election Loss

There are two things we definitely know about the midterm elections in Arizona earlier this month:

1. Gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake lost.

2. Gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake is refusing to admit she lost.

Last week, Lake — one of Donald Trump’s hand-picked candidates who sh*t the bed on November 8th, yet who also has a history of hating on Trumpheaded down to Mar-a-Lago to seek counsel from the former president/election denier supreme and possibly get some pointers on how to continue to insist you won an election you lost with a straight face. On Monday, a newly energized Lake took to Twitter to restate her commitment to seeing the results of her totally legitimate election overturned.

As Mediaite reports, Lake posted a video in which she broke the news to the people of Arizona that, at least in her kooky mind, their state’s elections were “botched.”

Lake, who looks and sounds like an HSN host, got her lighting just right and probably put on some Enya before sitting in front of the camera and lamenting the fact that “Election day was 13 days ago, and Maricopa County is still counting ballots.” Lake then went on to state that, “Printer problems, tabulation errors, three-hour long lines and even longer, and confusing instructions given by election officials made this Election Day the most chaotic in Arizona’s history.”

“Half of the voting centers that opened for the first time on Election Day where the overwhelming majority of voters were voting for Kari Lake, were not operational or had significant failures,” Lake said (we’re guessing that bit of illeism was a Trump suggestion). “Would you get on an airplane if half of the engines didn’t work? Would our friends in the media be able to broadcast their nightly propaganda if only half of their studio equipment was working? The 2022 general election in Arizona was botched and broken beyond repair,” Lake said.

While Lake swore that, “This isn’t about Republicans or Democrats,” you had better believe it’s all about making sure she is handed the keys to the governor’s mansion. The one-time news anchor claimed that “tens of thousands of you have reached out pleading with me to fight this fight” (Hmmm…) and vowed that “Rest assured I will — because if we give up now, we will no longer have a country.”

Meanwhile, Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates (no, not that Bill Gates) has been forced into hiding in an undisclosed location because of threats against his life from election deniers egged on by the likes of Lake.

Did August Alsina Come Out As Bisexual?

Love is a powerful thing, and recording artist August Alsina knows this all too well.

The past few years have been rough for the New Orleans native. Alsina has been engaged in an intense ongoing medical battle due to a hereditary autoimmune disease. He’s overcome heartache after finding himself in a public love affair with actress Jada Pinkett-Smith. Then he was physically assaulted by rapper Tory Lanez. The “No Love” singer is looking for serenity and he may have found it.

In the season final of VH1’s The Surreal Life, Alsina, gushes about finding love again. During his closing confessional, the singer shared his journey up until this point, stating, “I want to share that and really honor the person that I love and that loves me back and teaching me so much about love and healing,” adding, “I want to do that in front of the world because it defies all the constructs that one would say love is supposed to be or love should look like.”

The singer then invited a mystery man to join him in the taping stating, “And then what do you know? Love showed up, but in a new way.”

The man in question is recording artist LA Zu, or Zu for short. The two have a long standing history having had worked together on the track, “2 AM.”

Based on the outpouring of intimacy, viewers took to social media assuming the reality star was coming out as bisexual, while others dismissed any romantic undertones sharing a video in which Alsina clearly states that Zu was a “brother” to him.

Alsina hasn’t confirmed whether or not he is indeed bisexual. However, in a past interview with media personality Angela Yee, Alsina shared that he discovered he was demisexual after the breakup with Pinkett-Smith. Demisexuality falls on the asexual spectrum but isn’t exclusive to any one attraction label.

Viewers took to social media to embraces Alsina’s public declaration. While some fans congratulated him for supposedly “coming out” others saw it as embracing platonic love.

August Alsina has not publicly stated whether or not he is bisexual but we’re just happy to see that he’s happy.
