Morrissey and Johnny Marr are the thorns in each other’s sides.

On Monday, Morrissey wrote in a blog post titled “THE PLOT THICKENS” that his former The Smiths bandmate “successfully applied for 100% trademark rights / Intellectual Property ownership of The Smiths name.” He added, “Amongst many other things, this means that Marr can now tour as The Smiths using the vocalist of his choice, and it also prohibits Morrissey from using the name whilst also denying Morrissey considerable financial livelihood.”

Marr and his management team fired back in a statement obtained by Variety. It begins, “Recent statements made by Morrissey on his website regarding the trademark of the Smiths’ name are incorrect.” In 2018, Marr claims, he reached out to Morrissey to “work together in protecting The Smiths’ name” after it was discovered that the trademark wasn’t owned by anyone in the group (Andy Rourke, who passed away in 2023, and Mike Joyce are the other members). When Morrissey allegedly didn’t respond, Marr registered for the trademark himself and it was “subsequently agreed with Morrissey’s lawyers that this trademark was held for the mutual benefit of Morrissey & Marr.”

The statement also includes a direct quote from Marr: “To prevent third parties from profiting from the band’s name, it was left to me to protect the legacy. This I have done on behalf of both myself and my former bandmates,” he said. “As for the offer to tour, I didn’t ignore the offer – I said no.”

Recent statements made by Morrissey on his website regarding the trademark of the Smiths’ name are incorrect. Here are the facts:

In 2018, following an attempt by a third party to use The Smiths’ name – and upon discovery that the trademark was not owned by the band – Marr reached out to Morrissey, via his representatives, to work together in protecting The Smiths’ name.

A failure to respond led Marr to register the trademark himself. It was subsequently agreed with Morrissey’s lawyers that this trademark was held for the mutual benefit of Morrissey & Marr.

As a gesture of goodwill, in January 2024, Marr signed an assignment of joint ownership to Morrissey. Execution of this document still requires Morrissey to sign.

In the interests of accuracy and clarity regarding the trademark, and to answer recent reports that Marr ignored a promoter’s offer to tour as the Smiths, Marr says:

“To prevent third parties from profiting from the band’s name, it was left to me to protect the legacy. This I have done on behalf of both myself and my former bandmates.

“As for the offer to tour, I didn’t ignore the offer – I said no.”

Additionally, speculation about Johnny Marr touring with a different singer as the Smiths is not true. There are no such plans.

Johnny Marr also confirms that he declined a suggestion for another greatest hits compilation from Warner Music Group given the number already in existence.

So, yeah, don’t expect an Oasis-style reunion anytime soon.

Even though she’s been starring in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia for almost two decades (!) that doesn’t stop Kaitlin Olson from branching out to yet another project. The actress recently earned an Emmy nomination for her guest role on Hacks and now she’s onto her next venture as the lead in ABC’s High Potential. It her husband can have multiple things on the docket why can’t she?!

When Does High Potential Stream On Hulu?

The first season will consist of ten episodes. New episodes will air Tuesdays at 10:00 pm EST beginning on September 17th. Then it will be available to stream the next day on Hulu.

In High Potential, Olson plays Morgan, a single mom with a high IQ who begins assisting with police investigations thanks to her unconventional wit. The series was based on a French show with a similar premise. Daniel Sunjata, Javicia Leslie, Judy Reyes, and Taran Killam also star. Here is the official description:

Starring Kaitlin Olson, High Potential follows a single mom with an exceptional mind, whose unconventional knack for solving crimes leads to an unusual and unstoppable partnership with a by-the-book seasoned detective (Daniel Sunjata). The series is based on the popular French series “Haut Potentiel Intellectuel (HPI)”.

Olson has described Morgan as “very flawed, very mouthy,” but she has depth that many other Olson characters don’t. “This woman is very grounded. She is a very loving mother. I’m a very loving mother. That wasn’t so hard to jump into,” she said.

Deftones have a strong tour lined up for 2025: The band announced new dates today (September 17), and The Mars Volta and Fleshwater are set to support on all currently announced shows.

The tour starts in Portland, Oregon on February 25, and it’ll also hit cities like Seattle, Las Vegas, Chicago, and New York City, before wrapping up in Boston on April 8.

A Live Nation pre-sale for tickets starts September 19 at 10 a.m. local time (use the code “SETLIST”). Then, a general on-sale kicks off September 20 at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster.

In an interview with KROQ earlier this year, Chino Moreno said the band has a new album that’s nearing its final stages:

“We’ve just sort of been working on and off over the last year-and-a-half from when we started writing. Basically, where we’re sitting right now is we have a whole record recorded all musically. And it’s pretty much my job right now to finish up the vocals. I have, obviously, this show again next week, and then straight after that, I go back home to Oregon and I go in the studio. So as long as that takes. I hate to put a definite kind of timeframe… we’re not really in a rush. We want it to be great. I think that’s most important. But it is coming and it’s really good. We’re really excited with what we’ve been working on. Overall, it’s an invigorated kind of sound.”

The NBA season will tip off in a little more than a month, which means teams are in the process of getting fans fired up ahead of the new year. A really easy way to do that is to drop some incredible uniform — particularly throwbacks that let people get all nostalgic about teams that they used to love.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Sacramento Kings managed to do just that, as the team unveiled their Classic Edition uniforms for the coming season that harken back to the early-00s teams that competed at the very top of the Western Conference. The unveiling of the unis is particularly great, as Doug Christie pulls it out of a box in a garage while “Welcome Back” by John Sebastian plays. Mike Bibby also shows up, and the two just shoot around and have a makeshift press conference.

This is certainly one of the more wholesome uniform reveals that we’ve seen, and the unis themselves are really great, which is usually the case when the Kings lean into the fact that their particular shade of purple always pops. As for the team that will wear these during the 2024-25 campaign, there’s optimism that Sacramento will be able to build on last year’s 46-36 season that saw them bounced from the Play-In Tournament after the high-profile offseason acquisition of DeMar DeRozan.

Sydney Sweeney has a busy schedule, including starring in a Barbarella remake and a biopic of the “female Rocky,” not to mention season 3 of Euphoria. But you gotta respect that she still finds time for theme parks. Earlier this year, she wore her mouse ears at Disney World, and more recently, she spent time at Universal Studios Hollywood for Halloween Horror Nights. “came for @horrornights,” she wrote on Instagram, “stayed for the minions.”

If you’ve ever wanted to see Sweeney wear a Minion hat, you’re in luck! She also rode Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge in Super Nintendo World; posed with a Krusty the Clown pillow in Springfield; pretended to get stabbed by Norman Bates with her crew; and enjoyed a cake with her own likeness on it that read, “How does 27 taste?” (She recently celebrated her 27th birthday.) In one suggestive photo, Sweeney even pretended to lick her friend’s Halloween shirt with pictures of penises dressed up as ghosts, devils, etc. on it.

Sweeney received rave reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival for her performance in Ron Howard’s new film Eden, which also stars Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Jude Law, and Daniel Brühl.

“I felt like I just had imposter syndrome the whole time I was there working with Daniel and Jude and Ana and Vanessa and Ron,” she confessed to Collider. “Every day I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I cannot believe I’m here. Am I supposed to be here? Did they make a mistake? Am I the wrong person?’ So for me, I was nervous. I faced a lot of fears just even being there because everyone is such an amazing actor.”

Eden does not currently have a release date.

Tinashe’s been looking for somebody to match her freak all summer, and that now includes a tour DJ for her upcoming Match My Freak World Tour named after the hit that has her old label gagging. The breakout indie star has partnered with SoundCloud to find a DJ for each stop on the tour.

Entry is simple: DJs, keep your SoundCloud updated and complete a submission form on SoundCloud. Tinashe will select a local DJ for each stop after checking them out. “If you make dope music, then you should submit for a chance to join me on the road,” she said in a press release. “I’m selecting a different DJ each night so make sure to tap in and submit your music. I can’t wait to check out all the submissions and more importantly I can’t wait to see you all on the road soon!”

The Carolina Panthers have once again looked like the worst team in football through two weeks of the NFL season, losing to the Saints and Chargers by a combined margin of 73-13. There are a lot of problems in Carolina, but the most glaring issue has been on offense. The defense certainly hasn’t been great, but that’s in part because they’re spending a ton of time on the field because the Panthers simply cannot move the ball offensively.

Through two games, Carolina has 352 total yards of offense, which is almost impossible to do, and second-year quarterback Bryce Young has thrown for just 252 yards through two games with three interceptions and zero touchdowns. It has been painfully apparent that Young’s confidence is just not there, which is compounding the issues he already has as an undersized quarterback. He’s struggled to make timely throws and the fear of making a mistake slows down the processing which makes things worse, as windows are closing on him leading to turnovers.

On Monday, the Panthers made the decision to bench the former No. 1 overall pick and turn things over to Andy Dalton to try and stabilize things. While it’s hard to blame them for making a change — it’s been that bad — it also brings into question how they’ve handled Young since he arrived in Carolina. On ESPN’s “Get Up!” on Tuesday morning, longtime Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. joined the show to absolutely rip into the Panthers for how they’ve managed Young’s career thus far.

For one, this is vintage Mel Kiper Jr., which I love to see. For another, the man makes some excellent points. It was understandable to go after a young offensive mind in Dave Canales to pair with the young quarterback, but as Kiper points out, you cannot expect Young to succeed in a brand new offense without giving him meaningful reps. Kiper torched the Panthers for only giving Young one drive in the new offense in the final preseason game when they were facing backups and non-roster guys. As he points out, CJ Stroud played in two preseason games to keep building on his spectacular rookie year and get more reps, while Derek Carr (who’s been incredible to start the year) played in two games as well to get used to a new offense even as a vet.

For the Panthers to not give Young those reps was setting him up for failure, which is exactly what’s happened and now they’re at a place where they’ve benched him and it’s very possible he will need a fresh start somewhere else to regain some confidence and have a shot at turning his career around. Barring something unforeseen, the Panthers trading up for Young will go down as an all-time bad deal, and while Young certainly isn’t blameless for his struggles, Carolina has put him behind the 8-ball as often as possible.

As annoying as social media has made some things, there’s one place the concept still absolutely excels: Hoisting goofballs on their own petards with a timely “this you?”

Pharrell may have some egg on his face after claiming “I don’t do politics” in a recent interview. After decrying celebrities who “tell you who to vote for” — at a time when the fabric of democracy of itself is on the line — fans were quick to remind the producer that he does, in fact, “do politics,” pulling up his photos for the “Vote Or Die!” campaign of 2004 on Twitter. They also resurfaced a tweet from Pharrell’s account endorsing former NFL player Aaron Rouse for Virginia State Senator in a special election in 2022. “Virginia! Let your voice be heard, VOTE NOW,” he wrote, adding a very clear suggestion of whom to vote for with a #TeamRouse hashtag (were we still doing those in ’22?).

Speaking of choosing sides, Pharrell’s antics of late might just have fans claiming #TeamChad in Hugo’s lawsuit against his former production partner for control over The Neptunes name. There’s no telling how Pharrell’s upcoming Lego-animated biopic Piece By Piece will affect that outcome, other than continuing to convince people that Pharrell Williams might just be a deeply unserious person.

Anna Kendrick recently took a turn into darker subject matter with Alice, Darling, and she is following up with her directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, which will appeal to true-crime junkies and anybody who wants to have the hell scared out of them with a fear known all too well to women. Kendrick also stars as aspiring actress Cheryl Bradshaw, who went on 1970s-era The Dating Game show, and unbeknownst to everybody on set, one of the contestants happened to be Rodney Alcaca, who was later convicted and served time on death row (before dying of natural causes) after killing over 100 women.

In the above Netflix teaser, the film is previewed in a more terrifying manner than the full trailer, which held back from dropping the hammer on exactly how unsettling a portrayal that Daniel Zovatto gives as Alcaca. Kendrick’s Cheryl Bradshaw is shown on a date with Alcaca, who sets off her internal alarm bells during several jarring moments. He’s then shown insisting upon walking her home and “testing” her knowledge of a phone number that she gives him, and if you’ve read The Gift Of Fear by Gavin de Becker, then you will know precisely what this scene was meant to communicate. [Shudder]

While speaking to the New York Times (back in 2016), Kendrick named de Becker’s title as the self-help book that she finds most valuable, and Entertainment Weekly notes Kendrick’s previous words on the subject about “why women ‘reject their advances in poorly lit parking lots: it’s not because we’re bitches, it’s because we don’t want to get murdered.”

Kendrick also went in hard with EW in discussing her research of Alcaca:

[Kendrick] was able to fall back on the experiences she’d been collecting since she was a teenager … those ideas washed over her like rogue waves. While researching the story, she discovered a news report that listed the address of one of Alcala’s victims. “And I thought, I know exactly where that is,” Kendrick continues. “I had this awful feeling. ‘Oh my God, he broke in through her window, and she was on the ocean. She would’ve been hearing the ocean.’ And something about that just ruined me.”

Netflix’s Woman of the Hour will stream on October 18.

As the indictment against Sean “Diddy” Combs was unsealed today, more information has been revealed about the home raids that preceded his eventual arrest earlier this week. The indictment, which charges the music mogul with racketeering conspiracy; sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion; and transportation to engage in prostitution, also lists some of the items that were seized by federal agents in those raids.

In addition to three AR-15 rifles with defaced serial numbers and a drum magazine, the document also lists “1,000 bottles of baby oil” as one of the items seized — which, of course, has raised eyebrows among commenters on social media. However, their presence is also explained in the indictment, which alleges that Diddy kept employees on his payroll for the purposes of scheduling his so-called “Freak Offs,” securing supplies for those parties — including sex workers, lube, extra linens, drugs, and the aforementioned baby oil — and cleaning up after them. These parties, which could last for days, often resulted in participants being given fluids via IV to recover, which those assistants were also in charge of procuring.

Diddy is accused of using various methods of coercion, including threats of violence and blackmail, via secret tapes made during the sex parties, to keep the participants in line. The racketeering charge stems from his allegedly using his vast business empire to fund these activities.
