Joyce Wrice Brings Infectious Grooves To NPR Tiny Desk Concert

Rising R&B star Joyce Wrice is in the midst of a breakout year after dropping her debut album, Overgrown, in 2021. With its Kaytranada-produced follow-up EP Motive out now, Wrice solidified her breakout status with an appearance on NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concerts.

Her set spans both projects, drawing from the soulful Overgrown with renditions of “Chandler,” “Falling In Love,” “Must Be Nice,” and “On One” before shifting gears to the more upbeat Motive cuts “Bittersweet Goodbyes” and “Iced Tea.” Wrice herself is decked out in a white-on-white ensemble of a close-fitting maxi skirt with hip cutouts and matching gloves, while her band wears all-black, lending the staging the effect of a star shining in the night.

Wrice certainly fits the bill. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, she explained why wanted to switch up her style on Motive. “I think through this journey of me finding my voice, learning more about myself as an artist, performer, singer, and songwriter, I learned that I love performing,” she elaborates. “I really like making music that people can dance to, because I love to go out dancing. So why not make music for that?”

Jack Black Performed A ‘School Of Rock’ Song For A Young Fan And Instantly Went Viral

School Of Rock is one of those movies where you’re clearly rooting for the bad guy, but they’re played by an actor so charismatic that what they do on screen comes off as endearing no matter how dangerous it is. Which is why it should be no surprise that, years later, Jack Black‘s antics from the 2003 film are as charming as ever.

Nearly two decades later, in fact, Black’s Dewey is still delighting children in real life. Despite playing a mostly delusional guy who pretends to be a teacher and completely derails the education of an entire class of children in order to fulfill his own musical ambitions, Black is basically the hero of the movie and remains beloved by fans. But in real life, Black is viewed as a pretty good guy. And over the weekend, a clip of Black singing a song from the movie to a child with a rare disease went viral after footage from the charity event Black hosts hit social media.

As Variety detailed, Black was at the Layla Paige and Friends Walk for TrinityKids Care event in early October, which Black hosts to raise money for child hospice programs in California. Meeting a boy named Abraham, a 15-year-old with a mitochondrial disease called Pearson syndrome, Black learned that School of Rock was his favorite movie.

In the clip, reveals that his favorite song from School of Rock is “In the End of Time,” which Black performs with his child band from the show. The song is about getting kicked out of his old band, which kick-starts the whole movie’s plot. And in the clip, Black jumped into an impromptu version of the song, much to the delight of everyone around him.

It’s a sweet moment, and also fairly impressive that he knew the lyrics nearly 20 years after the movie hit theaters. But Black’s an entertainer, through and through. And he certainly made an impression for one super fan.

Kumail Nanjiani And Murray Bartlett Go To War Over A Male Stripper Empire In The ‘Welcome To Chippendales’ Official Trailer

With a month to go before Welcome to Chippendales struts it off, Hulu has dropped the full length trailer for the new limited series that charts the rise and fall of the iconic ’80s male stripper empire. From the creators of the equally scandalous Pam & Tommy, Welcome to Chippendales stars Kumail Nanjiani as Chippendales founder Somen “Steve” Banerjee. In the new trailer, Banerjee goes from lowly convenience store worker to entertainment mogul as he gambles everything on making a strip club for women.

However, greed and jealousy enter the mix as the franchise’s head choreographer, Nick De Noia (Murray Bartlett) becomes the public face of Chippendales, threatening Banerjee’s control of the business. The two parties show no signs of meeting coming to an agreement, and it’s not long until guns, cocaine, and fragile egos lead to murder.

Along with Nunjiani and Bartlett, Welcome to Chippendales also stars Juliette Lewis and Annaleigh Ashford, with recurring guest stars Quentin Plair, Robin de Jesús, Andrew Rannells, Spencer Boldman and guest stars Nicola Peltz Beckham and Dan Stevens.

Here’s the official synopsis:

A sprawling true-crime saga, WELCOME TO CHIPPENDALES tells the outrageous story of Somen “Steve” Banerjee, an Indian immigrant who became the unlikely founder of the world’s greatest male-stripping empire—and let nothing stand in his way in the process.

Welcome to Chippendales bares it all November 17 on Hulu.

Nicki Minaj Said That Making ‘Super Freaky Girl’ Helped Her Tap ‘Back Into Who I Was’

Say what you want about Nicki Minaj’s chaotic behavior lately, there’s simply no denying that her new song “Super Freaky Girl” is a hit. It was also a hit that she needed to return to her era of solo chart dominance after a string of collaborative Hot 100 bids failed to connect with an audience outside of her faithful Barbz. But now, she’s got a new No. 1 under her belt and is making waves in the mainstream in a way she hasn’t been able to for a while.

In a new interview with Jada Pinkett Smith, she talks about how the lighthearted song helped her tap back into the fun persona that made her such a fixture in hip-hop not so long ago. She admits, “When I was pregnant I couldn’t even record certain songs. That body was very uncomfortable for me, number one. And then you have the baby, and your body’s going through all these changes and mentally you’re going through it. It was difficult for me to write on the whole.”

However, when she got the concept for “Super Freaky Girl,” she says “I didn’t approach it in a sexual way, I approached it in a fun way, it’s like I tapped back into who I was. People might not get this from me, but I was never trying to be sexy, I always was laughing. I think that I can look sexy, but I don’t think of myself as a person that is—you know how some women walk into the room and they’re just like, ‘Ooh.’ I’m not like that.”

She explains that because the song was so goofy-sounding, it freed her from a need to live up to that sexy image. “After a few years I had forgotten who I was because I was only reading who people were saying I was. And then it dawned on me like, ‘Wait a minute. When you were saying your sexually explicit lyrics before, Onika, you weren’t trying to be serious. You weren’t trying to turn people on. You were trying to be funny and goofy and stupid. Like, just tap back into you.’ You know? And so that’s how I approached ‘Super Freaky Girl.’”

That approach has paid off, even if its success has been getting overshadowed by nonsensical Twitter beef. Let’s hope that Nicki can remember to keep that same energy, while maybe toning down the antics as she gets closer to releasing a new album.

In what seems to be a very eventful news week for BTS, ARMY and those who are familiar with the Korean supergroup, there’s more news to come. But with today’s news, you may want to mark your calendars.

After news broke out early Monday with Big Hit Music and BTS confirming their mandatory military service, the Korean label also confirmed member Jin’s solo project. Today (or midnight in South Korea), Big Hit unveiled Jin’s promotion schedule for his solo single “The Astronaut.” In a galactic-style poster, the label shares dates to when ARMY and fans can expect content leading up to the single’s release next Friday, October 28. Fans will be treated to teaser posters, photos and videos beginning October 19, 23, 24, 25, and 26 at 11 a.m. ET. Following the official release of the music video and single, a lyric video will also drop on October 30.

According to Big Hit Music’s statement yesterday, and considering he is the group’s eldest and approaching his 30s, Jin will be the first BTS member to enlist in the military after the month of October. The rest of the members are said to follow suit afterwards once completing their own personal schedules. The group is said to return “around 2025” after serving the military all together.

All The Best New Pop Music From This Week

As Halloween slowly approaches and summer is feeling like it’s almost officially over, the pop girlies and guys are dropping the best new pop bangers before the season completely changes. One of the artists on this list has a song that recognizes just how fast this month flew by, while another band covers a song that mourns a certain summer month by a famous pop artist. (Take a wild guess to both.) The rest have music that will have you dancing and, possibly, crying in the street, a car, a train, or wherever you usually jam out.

Continue scrolling to see everything pop-focused that Uproxx loved this week. Here’s the best new pop music this week.

Muna — “August (Cover)”

Muna carefully crafted a cover of Taylor Swift’s Folklore track “August” during their time at NYC’s Electric Lady Studios. The result, featured among live versions of “Silk Chiffon” on their new Live At Electric Lady album, is a track that takes on a soft and calming presence, as the band opted to slow things down from Swift’s original version. Did we mention Muna made it their track five?

Tove Lo — “Grapefruit”

Opening with a captivating synth instrumental that carries “Grapefruit,” it also has a powerful message for those who choose to emphasize lyrics. Tove Lo discusses her struggle with body image that might get missed for those expecting a strictly-dance track. “What I see is not me,” she repeats throughout as a mantra to try to regain a sense of control.

Lolo Zouaï– “Free Trial”

Zouai dropped her sophomore album, Playgirl, last week. While it was actually quite hard to pick a favorite, between the immensely catchy namesake track or early single “VHS,” my personal standout is “Free Trial,” which closes out the record. She details how she finds herself testing the waters with a lover, but only for a brief moment. It’s a song about making the moments count, because you don’t know how long it’ll last, adding to the creativity of the temporary tech title.

Louis Tomlinson — “Out Of My System”

On Tomlinson’s new single, “Out Of My System,” he infuses alt-rock influences through using fast-paced drums and an occasional guitar riff. While the first verse feels almost reminiscent of One Direction’s early days, the instrumental takes over the rest of the song. It definitely serves its job as a catchy single.

Zella Day — “I Don’t Know How To End”

Zella Day stans have waited seven years for a new album, which she returned with today, in the form of the sophomore LP, Sunday In Heaven. Day shines on “I Don’t Know How To End,” an incredibly calming piano ballad that would fit perfectly in a movie soundtrack. And then, when you feel comfortable as a listener, she switches to an acoustic guitar — in a way that still feels as seamless and soaring as the entire song. A track truly worth the wait.

Lexi Jayde — “What’s The Matter With You”

Although Jayde already put out a standout EP with Closer To Closure earlier this year, it seems she isn’t slowing down any time soon. Just a few months later, her new song “What’s The Matter With You” is a love song about trying to not be in love — even if they’re literally perfect. In contrast to her heartbreaking past songs about reeling from a bad breakup, this one builds upon the hope seemingly presented in Jayde’s past song “Gentle.” Jayde hasn’t put out a miss yet, but, in fact, just keeps getting better.

Girl In Red — “October Passed Me By”

A reference to Girl In Red’s breakout hit “We Fell In Love In October,” she dropped a part two to the sonical story with “October Passed Me By” — just a more heartbreaking version. “You know this song is about you / Who else could it be?” the Norwegian singer makes it clear to the unnamed subject, who might be out there listening. We know we will be.

Joshua Bassett — “She Said He Said She Said”

In contrast to his drop from last week, Bassett shines even brighter on “She Said He Said She Said” by utilizing disco-inspired synths in a track that radiates hazy club energy. Lyrically, he’s also coming for blood, as he notes someone should “burn your bridge.” If this isn’t a glimpse of the direction he’s going on a future project, he should definitely reconsider because the dance-anthem-meets-shady-chaos style suits him so, so well.

Alexander 23 — “Ill”

A collaboration between Alexander 23 and Kenny Beats, including on the production, “Ill” is about straight-up reminiscing. “I guess it’s your right to do so, and it’s mine to feel like sh*t,” he sings on the track, which infuses R&B with an entire guitar solo towards the track’s end. Despite all the genres present, it still proves itself to work.

Raye — “Escapism”

Another team effort on this list, Raye’s “Escapism” is a heavy-hitting hedonistic pop song that features vocals from 070 Shake on the third verse. Detailing an entire chaotic party experience, followed by the hangover aftermath, the song is truly a rollercoaster ride — propelled by the beat changes. There’s also a line that feels like a (potential) Red Hot Chili Peppers reference. Those who hear it, get it.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Joey Badass Tried To Defend Kanye West’s ‘Freedom Of Speech,’ But He Quickly Regretted It

Joey Badass quickly found himself in hot water after defending Kanye’s recent antics that got him barred from social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter.

Despite the Brooklyn rapper noting he doesn’t agree with all of Kanye’s recent statements and has been trying to ignore all the controversy, he called out the mass media and accused them of censoring Kanye, calling the move “wack.”

“I don’t support everything Kanye been saying and honestly been trying my best to ignore most of it (for my own peace of mind) but censoring his right to freedom of speech is WACK,” he tweeted. “Askin him to come speak on your platform and then removing/blocking the content cuz you don’t agree?”

“We can have healthy disagreements. And yes, Kanye can do a much better job at his delivery but it’s the same old story,” he continued. “Magnifying a small piece of what he said and taking it out of context. The mass media needs to learn some new moves it’s corny and so obvious at this point.”

The rapper was immediately met with backlash, calling the internet an “unsafe place.” In subsequent tweets, Joey seemed to laugh the discourse off and said he had no plans of deleting the tweets he had written earlier.

Since then, the rapper has seemingly gone ghost on social media and made no more statements regarding West.

What Is Parler? Diving Into Kanye West’s Latest Purchase

There is a lot of controversy surrounding Parler, the conservative social media platform that parent company Parlement Technologies said is working on “a definitive purchase agreement” with West.

CNN reports that Parler has become a favorite among conservatives and has been banned by big tech companies like Apple, Google, and Amazon.

Founded in 2018, the alternative social network has been surging in popularity lately, particularly after the election of Joe Biden on November 8. The platform has also been accused of failing to rein in “hate-filled, violent speech.”

It was founded by Rebekah Mercer — a prominent conservative donor, daughter of a hedge fund manager, and the co-founder of a former political data-analysis firm Cambridge Analytica — along with John Matze and Jared Thomson. The company’s current CEO is George Farmer, who is married to recent Ye associate Candace Owens.

The app has been heavily used among Donald Trump supporters and has positioned itself as the epicenter of “unbiased social media.” There have also been many conservative politicians and media personalities that have become active on Parler, such as Fox News host Sean Hannity, radio personality, and Senator Ted Cruz.

After the presidential election and the subsequent attack on Capitol Hill in 2021, many media companies began cracking down on misinformation, leading many prominent conservatives to claim they were being censored and calling it an attack on free speech.

Parler has been linked to members of anti-government extremists like adherents to the QAnon conspiracy theory and white supremacist groups like the Proud Boys, per an ADL report, as well as the Capitol Hill insurrection.

12 things every American has in their house, according to non-Americans

For a country that’s so diverse, America has some obvious cultural staples, especially visible to those who don’t live in the U.S. Surprisingly—and thankfully—those staples don’t always conjure up a cringeworthy image of ignorance, bravado or unsavory politics.

Self-described “non-Americans” listed things that would be found in every American home, and a lot of the responses could remind Americans of what they might take for granted—whether it’s the ever-expanding variety of foodstuffs or appliances that make everyday life easier.

But perhaps more importantly, they could add a new level of appreciation (and perhaps a sigh of relief) given the amount of, let’s say, bad press the nation has been receiving as of late.

“This is the most wholesome I’ve felt about my country in a while,” noted one American after reading the thread.

The answers were also astonishingly accurate, as indicated by some of the comments.

“I haven’t seen a single one I don’t have tbh and I don’t know how to feel about it lol,” wrote one American.

The answers were prompted by Reddit user Ryrylx, who asked, “Non-Americans, what do you think every American person has in their house?” to the online forum.

Below are 12 answers—along with a few funny confirmations from Americans—for your viewing pleasure.

“Oh oh, the washing machines where you put everything in the top! This fascinated me when we visited the states. They’re huge!” — Tired3250

“Washer Collector Here. Automatic washers became popular in the US during the early 1950’s, and you had your choice between front load & top load. Top loaders had larger capacity (important with the baby boom). Had higher spin speeds so drying time was faster (important when many didn’t yet own a dryer). Went out of balance less often (not trying to distribute a sloshing horizontal load). Had very fast cycle times (clothes washed in 20 minutes). And clothes/detergent could be added at any time after start of cycle. Plus you don’t have to stoop to get the clothes out.

In Europe, the constraints were different. Typically there was no dedicated laundry room or basement for the larger machine. Laundry tended to be done more frequently so capacity wasn’t as much of a concern. Water was/is more expensive so a longer cycle time was acceptable for less consumption. And machine size was dictated by countertop height, as many were installed in kitchens out of convenience (and plumbing).” — @eldofever🇺🇸
