John Cale is back with the announcement of Mercy, his first new album of original songs in a decade. Today, he released the lead single “Story Of Blood,” which features the one and only indie singer Weyes Blood, who also has an LP arriving soon. She’s not the only guest on Mercy. It’ll also have Animal Collective, Sylvan Esso, Laurel Halo, Tei Shi, and Actress.

“I’d been listening to Weyes Blood’s latest record and remembered Natalie’s puritanical vocals,” the former Velvet Underground member said about deciding to work with her. “I thought if I could get her to come and sing with me on the ‘Swing your soul’ section, and a few other harmonies, it would be beautiful. What I got from her was something else! Once I understood the versatility in her voice, it was as if I’d written the song with her in mind all along. Her range and fearless approach to tonality was an unexpected surprise. There’s even a little passage in there where she’s a dead-ringer for Nico.”

Paolo Banchero made his NBA debut on Wednesday night in Detroit as the Magic went on the road to face the Pistons in a matchup of teams loaded with young talent. The most recent No. 1 overall pick did not disappoint for Orlando, as he set a new Magic rookie record with 27 points to go along with nine rebounds and five assists, putting on a show from the get-go against Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, and the equally exciting Pistons.

In the fourth quarter with the Magic trailing, Banchero put forth the highlight of the night in the NBA, as he threw down a massive dunk on the break over Cory Joseph for an and-1 finish that had the Orlando bench going crazy.

Joseph makes the bold choice to try and slide in front of the massive rookie and pays the price with a knee to the chest, a place on the wrong end of a highlight, and a foul for good measure. The additional angles of the dunk show how Banchero just flies through Joseph and seems to only go higher and higher as he throws it down and gives Joseph a staredown after.

The Magic, who started the game on fire before the Pistons battled back to take control, weren’t able to complete the comeback (thanks to an Isaiah Stewart dagger three, of all things), but even in a loss it was an encouraging showing from their young stars, headlined by Banchero’s debut, but also with Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs having big nights. On the other side Detroit got big nights from Cunningham and Ivey, but the difference was veteran sharpshooter Bojan Bogdanovic catching fire from deep, as both teams look primed for a step forward this season.

It’s been a big year for Ke Huy Quan. In the ‘80s, the Vietnamese-American performer was one of the era’s biggest kid stars, most famously for playing Short Round, the precocious child sidekick in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Recently he reappeared, playing Michelle Yeoh’s devoted, sadsack husband in Everything Everywhere All at Once. More recently, he reunited with his Doom star Harrison Ford. Images of the two hugging, big smiles on their faces, at September D23 Expo turned into one of the convention’s biggest moments. But it turns out the story behind it is even more moving.

“We were at the D23 event and I was told Harrison was gonna be there,” Quan told The New York Times’ Kyle Buchanan. “We’re in this green room with so many actors, producers, and directors, and the person who was assigned to assist me said, ‘Harrison Ford is right outside the green room. Would you want to go say hi?’”

He went on:

“I’m thinking, ‘Of course! I haven’t seen him in 38 years,’” Quan continued. “So I walk out and I see him about 15 feet away talking to Phoebe Waller-Bridge, they’re there to promote Indy 5. And as I walk close, my heart is pounding. I’m thinking, ‘Is he gonna recognize me? The last time he saw me, I was a little kid.’”

As the photos evidence, Quan needn’t have worried. “As I get closer, he turns and points his finger at me, and he has that classic, famous, grumpy Harrison Ford look,” the actor elaborated. “I go, ‘Oh my gosh, he probably thinks I’m a fan and he’s gonna tell me to not come near him.’ But he looks and points at me and says, ‘Are you Short Round?’ Immediately, I was transported back to 1984, when I was a little kid, and I said, ‘Yes, Indy.’ And he said, ‘Come here,’ and gave me a big hug.”

And that’s why that photo was so amazing. They look incredibly stoked to see each other, especially the famously grouchy Ford. Anyway, dry your eyes, just as you did when you saw that recent reunion video of Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd.

Wizkid is having a massive year. He’ll be playing Madison Square Garden next month, and he released his first single of the year, which is called “Bad To Me.” Today, he gave that song a charismatic, colorful video.

In the video, the groovy track prompts all different kinds of dance moves, with Wizkid taking the stage and making his audience cheer and move along with him. It somehow makes the song even more infectious than it already is.

It also builds up hype for Wizkid’s next album, even though it doesn’t yet have a release date. However, he has been teasing it on social media. “Biggest bird bringing #AppleMusicLive to London!” he wrote in a tweet. “For one night only at the Roundhouse performing my new album.” Fans are hoping that will happen before the end of the year. He previously revealed that the album would be titled More Love, Less Ego.

In September, the singer received praise from Kanye West, who shared “Essence” by Wizkid and Tems on Instagram. He deemed the “Best song in the history of music to date,” which was alongside tracks by Beyonce, DJ Khaled, and The Game.

Yellowstone has only been around since 2018, but look what it’s already accomplished. Your parents’ favorite show is not only a ratings and streaming monster; it’s also spawned one hit spinoff, with two more en route. As expected, people are unbelievably stoked for the show’s fifth season. But when does that kick off again?

The next round of Yellowstone episodes will bow on Nov. 13 on the Paramount Network. That’s good news for the millions who watched the new season’s trailer on YouTube, turning it into a record-breaker that quickly trounced the likes of House of the Dragon. Yes, Kevin Costner is more powerful than the Targaryens.

The neo-Western, which revolves around a cattle ranch in Montana, has given Costner’s career yet another act (and proven that he looks even better with a cowboy hat than he did in one of his first movies, the actual Western Silverado). He’s tried to use it for good. Surely the MAGA contingent that binges it will be stoked to learn he used his clout to try (and, alas, fail) to save Liz Cheney from losing her House seat.

Anyway, if another batch of Yellowstone episodes ain’t enough Yellowstone for you, there’s always the next prequel, which features no less than Dame Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford.

The Cleveland Cavaliers entered the 2022-23 season with more hype than they’ve had since LeBron James left, coming off of a run to the play-in last year with a pair of young All-Stars, a ROY runner-up, and added Donovan Mitchell to the roster.

Their first game figured to be a litmus test as they went on the road to face the Raptors, with both teams able to measure up against a squad that figures to be in the hunt for a playoff spot in the East this season. Unfortunately, the excitement for the Cavs turned into concern in the second quarter when Darius Garland got poked in the eye by Gary Trent Jr. who reached in late trying to steal the ball in the backcourt, with his pinkie finger jabbing Garland’s left eye.

As the two teams came out for the second half, Garland was not with them as the Cavs announced he had a left eye injury and would not return for the game.

Hopefully the injury is not severe enough to keep him out for an extended period of time, but it’s always scary when this type of situation happens and someone takes a finger to the eye. The Cavs struggled mightily last season without their All-Star guard, which was part of the reason they went out and got Mitchell to help ease the burden on Garland creatively and also to have someone else who could run the show when he sat (or in this case, was out with an injury).

It’s cold and flu seasons, folks. During this time of year, we’re all on a mission to avoid the demon viruses that threaten to invade our bodies and wage Armageddon on our immune systems.

But no matter how much vitamin C we consume or how diligently we wash our hands, we still have to rely on others to be smart about exposing people to their sick germs. And that goes doubly for kids, who inexplicably do things like lick their own palms and rub communal crayons under their noses

That’s why a mom’s recent Facebook post about keeping kids home when they have a fever has been shared more than 170,000 times. Samantha Moriá Reynolds shared a photo of a thermometer with a temperature of 101.4 with the following message:

This morning, Sam woke up and noticed her son wasn’t feeling well.
Sam took her son’s temperature, and wow! A fever.
Sam gave her son Tylenol and then…
Sam did NOT send her son to school.
Even after the fever went down a couple hours later, Sam did NOT send her son to school.
Sam missed work knowing that the well-being of her son and the kids who attend his school is more important than work missed.

Sam’s son was invited to THREE birthday parties over the weekend. Sam’s son has been so excited to go, but he will unfortunately also have to miss them because Sam’s son is SICK. Sam knows passing along a sickness would not be a great birthday gift regardless of how bummed her son may be.

Sam knows her son is still contagious until he is fever-free, WITHOUT medication, for 24 hours. If Sam’s son is running a fever at 7am on Sunday, Sam’s son will also not be attending school on Monday.

Be. Like. Sam.

Some parents will give their kids fever-reducing medication, the fever will go down, the kid will feel a bit better, and off they go to school. But fever meds like Tylenol don’t do anything to kill the virus that’s infecting the kid’s body. They just mask the symptoms of the illness and provide some relief to a miserable kiddo. If a fever goes down with medication, the child is still sick and still contagious.

The same goes for adults who try to tough it out by popping a Dayquil before heading off to work. If you want to infect your coworkers and make them hate you, keep doing that.

Granted, some parents may have a hard time finding childcare or taking time off work, and there’s a lot to be said for employers being understanding and granting leave to care for sick children. Our whole society needs to work together on this front to make sure people don’t feel like they have no choice but to send a sick kid to school. But that starts with parents insisting that their feverish kids stay home from school until they are no longer a threat to other people’s health and well-being.

The coronavirus outbreak keeps making headlines and the mounting death numbers from it are making people nervous, but the truth is that the plain old flu already kills thousands of Americans every single year. This season, more than 8,000 people have already died from flu and flu complications, and we’re still in the thick of the season.

The best way to keep illness from spreading is to stay away from other people when you are sick and to keep sick kids home until they are fever-free for 24 hours.

Be like Sam. Keep sick kids home. It takes a village to keep us all healthy.

Certain people have an innate ability to remember random facts. They are great at trivia but can also be insufferable know-it-alls.

So why are some people better at recalling random facts than others? Researchers in Europe believe that it’s because their brains are more efficiently wired than other people’s.

“We assume that more efficient networking of the brain contributes to better integration of pieces of information and thus leads to better results in a general knowledge test,” biopsychologist Erhan Genc, from Ruhr University Bochum, said according to Science Alert.

Brittany Packnett Cunningham, an MSNBC contributor, activist, and co-host of Crooked Media’s “Pod Save The People,” wanted to harvest the mind hive on Twitter and find the most random fact that anyone knows.

“I mean RANDOM random,” she wrote.

The answers ranged from the utterly pointless to the truly amazing. There was also a generous helping of utterly disgusting answers thrown in the mix.

Almost every answer deserved the follow-up question: “Why in the world do you know that?”

In an alternative universe, Aubrey Plaza would have been smiling under the Ghostface mask. Speaking with Hit Radio‘s Olivia Marks, Plaza revealed that one of her early career failures was going “full method” for a Scream sequel audition as one of the killers.

“And they had told me, you’re going into an audition to play a character that you eventually find out is the killer,” Plaza said. “So I took that really literally and I kind of was thinking, alright, I’m gonna dress like the killer. I went in and I looked terrible, I was like really frumpy and my hair… ‘cause I thought, like, I’m a murderer!”

It turns out that none of her competitors for the role thought to go for the disheveled look.

“They all looked great, and I just looked insane,” Plaza added. “[The producers] were like, the whole point was that we’re not supposed to know that you were the killer, you pretty much just look like a murderer right away.”

That’s pretty solid life advice for actors and for murderers.

Plaza calls it a “Scream remake” in the interview, but, based on the timing, she’s almost certainly talking about what came to be known as Scream 4. That means (spoilers for an 11-year-old film!) that she would have been a 20-something playing a high schooler. Or that the audition was just an audition. Or the script changed a bit. You know, basically all things are possible.

What’s sadly not possible is Plaza getting to slash her way through Woodsboro. It’s a shame, because she’s the perfect so-obvious-it’s-not-obvious choice.
