‘House Of The Dragon’ Topped A Disturbing ‘Game Of Thrones’ Moment With This Gasp-Inducing Callback

(House of the Dragon spoilers will be found below.)

“Lord of the Tides” brings viewers back to King’s Landing six years after we last saw King Viserys I not looking healthy, exactly, but he didn’t look as ghastly as he did this week. Rhaenyra and Daemon left Dragonstone to come discuss the missing Sea Snake and Driftmark and succession and many things that they’d rather not address, of course. The bed-confined Viserys, despite being in an immense amount of pain, hauled himself up and entered the throne room. He reiterated his declaration of Rhaenyra as heir, and that’s when things grew really dramatic with a callback to Joffrey Baratheon’s “Your fingers or your tongue” moment in Game of Thrones.

Way back during an especially disturbing moment of the O.G. dragon-filled series, Joffrey gave a singer a choice for which of his physical attributes that he’d rather lose. It was a disturbing scene that Sansa Stark witnessed while also being forced to be subservient to the little cretin. And on this week’s HotD, Viserys put an end to succession petitions, and Vaemond Velaryon made the very unwise choice to stand up — in front of Viserys and everything — and issue a shout-filled condemnation while calling Rhaenyra’s children “bastards.” He also decided to brand her a “whore,” at which point Viserys declared that he’d have his tongue. In a flash, Daemon (following a dare) stepped forward to defend his wife, made one swift movement, and off went most of Vaemond’s head.

He did, however, get to keep his tongue.

This throne-room carnage happened without warning, and I did gasp upon seeing it happen. As it turns out, I wasn’t alone (and yes, shocked laughter happened), and people thought that Vaemond definitely deserved his method of death:

‘House Of The Dragon’ Viewers’ Jaws Literally Dropped At One Character’s Changed Appearance In ‘Lord Of The Tides’

(House of the Dragon spoilers will be found below.)

“Lord of the Tides” picks up six years after we last saw the House of the Dragon characters, and let’s just say that this week’s events did not follow the steamy, HotD tone that frequently appears on this Game of Thrones prequel. Instead, we pick up with Rhaenyra and Daemon having enjoyed a period of peace and bliss at Dragonstone. Whereas at King’s Landing, the very sad monarch has physically declined to the point where he looks — to be perfectly blunt — like a zombie. His health has never been optimal, and that’s left people guessing about why Viserys has so many ailments.

Targaryens are neither fireproof nor invincible, but they are thought to be resistant to illness. Clearly, King Viserys I is an exception to that trend. We’ve seen him dunking his hands into maggots, losing digits, and oozing from random sores. He’s essentially been rotting away, and there’s no telling whether the Iron Throne is actually making him sick (thereby rejecting him as a leader) or whether Otto Hightower has been a poison-happy bloke. Speaking of which, yeah, there was some curious stuff going on in this episode. We’ll get to that soon, but for the moment, let’s observe how people were taken aback after seeing how much Viserys’ health went downhill.

This is not happening, although the spirit is appreciated.

When Rhaenyra enters her father’s bedroom, the poor guy has got half of his face covered (and we find out why later). He’s emaciated, his teeth are rotting away, and he’s both disoriented and in severe pain. Even after what we’ve already seen from Viserys’ appearance, the drastic change hit people hard. Jaws began dropping.

Viserys did, however, enjoy the visit from Rhaenyra and even from Daemon. He meets his youngest grandchild, also named Viserys, which he smilingly declares to be “a name fit for a king.” Let’s get to the tea talk now: Daemon sniffed the beverage that appeared to offer Viserys some pain relief. The rogue prince doesn’t remark upon his suspicions. So… has Otto been dropping poison into the tea? Some people do have suspicions.

People Were Choking Back Tears After Michael J. Fox And Christopher Lloyd Teamed Up For A ‘Back To The Future’ Reunion

You’re not going to get a Back to the Future reboot anytime soon, which is okay, because there’s always Rick and Morty. But on Saturday, fans got something even better: They got to see a very moving reunion between the two original stars.

At New York Comic Con on Saturday, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd joined each other on stage, hugging it out and fielding questions from the audience. One thing they discussed was one of the bigger elephants in the room: that Fox wasn’t the first person to play time traveling teenager Marty McFly. Eric Stoltz spent several weeks in the role before director Robert Zemeckis and team realized he wasn’t right for the part. They fired him and were able to work around Fox’s Family Ties schedule to film what wound up his most famous role.

“I didn’t know Michael other than hearing about him,” Lloyd told the crowd. “And I felt that I had barely made it through the six weeks, and now I was going to have to do it again?” Luckily they clicked. “There was immediate chemistry, as they say.”

Fox, meanwhile, praised Lloyd as “the king of exposition,” for the way he’s able to make boring dialogue sound exciting. “No one wants to do exposition because it’s boring…The freaking thing is you retain it all, because he’s just so good at it, and he’s brilliantly entertaining… I would be like, ‘I gotta watch my ass, because this guy will blow me off the screen.’”

They also discussed Fox’s condition: He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in the early ‘90s but it didn’t start impacting his career until years later. By 2000, he’d launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation, to help fund research. He retired from acting in 2020, saying he’d lost his short-term memory.

“Parkinson’s is the gift that keeps on taking—but it’s a gift, and I wouldn’t change it for anything,” Fox said. “People like Chris have been there a lot for me, and so many of you have. It’s not about what I have, it’s about what I’ve been given—the voice to get this done, and help people out.”

The reunion earned a lot of love, especially due to Fox’s condition.

It’s not the first time Fox and Lloyd have reunited since the franchise ended all the way back in 1990. In 2016, they dug up Marty and Doc Brown once more for Jimmy Kimmel, which you can watch below.

Lizzo Seemingly Responds To Kanye West’s Body-Shaming Comments: ‘I’m Minding My Fat Black Beautiful Business’

During a performance in Toronto on a stop on her Special tour, Lizzo took some time to address comments from people who bring up her name in interviews. In a video shared by TMZ, she expresses her desire to stay in Canada.

“I feel like everybody in America got my motherf*cking name in their motherf*cking mouth for no motherf*cking reason,” she said. “I’m minding my fat Black beautiful business. Can I stay here? Who can I marry for that dual citizenship?”

Though she didn’t call out anyone by name, this moment arrives just days after Kanye West spoke about Lizzo during an interview with Tucker Carlson in an attempt to discredit body positivity movements

“When Lizzo loses 10 pounds and announces it, the bots … on Instagram, they attack her losing weight,” Ye said, “because the media wants to put out a perception that being overweight is the new goal when it’s actually unhealthy. It’s demonic.”

Lizzo is not one to let any sort of hate or vitriol faze her. Back in August, her music video for “About Damn Time” won the moonperson for Video For Good at the MTV Video Music Awards. During her speech, she revealed why she chooses not to respond to hateful comments.

“They be like, ‘Lizzo, why don’t you clap back?,’” she said. “Why don’t you clap back?’ Cause bitch I’m winning, ho!”

Lizzo is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

The Grinch Is The Next Children’s Book Character To Get Rebranded In A Nasty Horror-Comedy

Earlier this year, something exciting happened to Winnie-the-Pooh: The beloved teddy bear was freed from the Disney vaults. Rights to the character, created by English author A.A. Milne and illustrator E.H. Shepard, entered the public domain, and you know what that meant: A low-rent studio milked him for an over-the-top horror-comedy. Now something similar is (sort of) happening to another classic children’s book character.

As per ComicBook.com, XYZ Films — who’ve overseen genre fare like the Raid films as well as the Nicolas Cage starrers Mandy and Color Out of Space — are set to crash the holidays with The Mean One, seasonal horror film about a village terrorized by a murderous green creature (David Howard Thornton) who hates Christmas and wears a Santa suit.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s a copyright-flirting parody of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which has been turned into two movies and one iconic TV special. Among the big differences — apart from some possible gore and a presumably higher body count (more than zero, that is) ¬— is the young girl who winds up melting his heart doesn’t melt his heart. Instead, the Mean One killed her parents and, now grown up, she’s out for revenge.

The Mean One is currently scheduled for a December 15 release. Will it make that date? Or will it find itself beset upon by legal headaches, much like The People’s Joker, the unauthorized parody of the DC-verse? Whatever the case, it will likely be a more cinematic experience than watching it in a theater off of Amazon Prime.

Tom Brady And The Bucs Got Bailed Out With A Horrendous Roughing The Passer Call

It took a little time for the Atlanta Falcons offense to get on the board during Sunday afternoon’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As the matchup entered the fourth quarter, Tampa held a 21-0 lead and looked like they were going to cruise to their third win at this early point in the NFL calendar.

And then, the Falcons started scoring. Atlanta got points early in the fourth, forced a three-and-out, had to punt, and forced yet another three-and-out by Tampa’s offense. Upon getting the ball back, the Falcons put together a 12-play, 70-yard drive that ended in points and a two-point conversion, meaning they’d win the game if they could score and convert a PAT.

While the Bucs got the ball back, their struggles on offense throughout the frame gave reason for optimism. On a third-and-5 from near midfield, it seemed like Grady Jarrett did his job, sacking Tom Brady and giving Atlanta’s offense more than two minutes to go down the field and score. The problem is that, for some reason, the referees threw a flag and called a roughing the passer penalty.

It is extremely hard to see what Jarrett did wrong here. Anyway, Tampa would go on to win, 21-15.

Jets DT Quinnen Williams Sent Tyreek Hill Flying With A Stiff Arm

The New York Jets don’t win division games all that often. Coming into Sunday afternoon, the Jets were on a 12-game losing streak against the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, and New England Patriots, which is indicative of how good the other three teams usually are and how low the expectations are for the Jets on an annual basis.

But Sunday presented an opportunity to pick up a victory over a Dolphins team that still does not have starting signal caller Tua Tagovailoa and saw backup Teddy Bridgewater go down early with a head injury. New York was able to capitalize in a big way, as they went on to win, 40-17, to move to 3-2 at this early point in the season.

The high point came early on in the fourth quarter when things were still close, as the pass rush was able to get home and force a fumble against third-string signal caller Skylar Thompson. Carl Lawson forced it, Quinnen Williams picked it up, and the big fella was able to rumble forward to set his team up deep in Dolphin territory.

Another angle shows that Williams didn’t just plow forward — the defensive lineman sent Miami receiver Tyreek Hill flying with a hellacious stiff arm.

One of these guys is listed as 6’3 and 303 pounds, while the other is 5’10 and 191 pounds.

Mike Dean Seemingly Takes Issue With Kanye West Sharing Screenshots Of Conversations

If there ever was a time to vocalize grievances toward Kanye West, now would be ideal, given that he has been suspended from Twitter and Instagram. Producer and longtime Ye collaborator Mike Dean appears to have done just that today (October 9) via Twitter.

Today. Dean posted a cryptic tweet, reading “Posting DM and texts from folks is the single most thirsty [thing] a person can do.”

Dean seems to be referring to the several Instagram posts Ye has shared over the course of the past week containing alleged screenshots of conversations between Diddy and Supreme creative director Tremaine Emory. Such conversations, including ones in which he allegedly made anti-semitic references to Diddy, are thought to have led to his suspension from Instagram.

Ye has been a controversial figure for years, especially with his outspoken support of Donald Trump, as well as the threats he’s made to comedian and actor Pete Davidson. But Dean continued to collaborate with Ye during those times.

In an interview with Variety last year, Dean said that while he enjoys working with Ye, the Donda sessions were rather chaotic, especially given the fact that he mixed 35 songs over the course of 10 days.

“We are like yin and yang,” Dean said of his relationship with Ye. “We are real opposite personality-wise, and have entirely different skill sets.”

It appears now that Dean may now use those personality differences as reasons to no longer collaborate with Ye.

The Biggest Takeaways From ‘Atlanta’ Season 4, Episode 5

(SPOILERS for this week’s Atlanta will be found below.)

Last week’s episode of Atlanta focused mainly on Earn for what turned out to be a wacky Sunday with his family. Series frequents like Earn’s baby mother Vanessa and his close friend Darius were absent from the episode, while Paper Boi arrived in the second half as he got dragged into Earn’s series of unfortunate events.

In this week’s episode, titled Work Ethic!, the spotlight is on Vanessa who viewers follow as she spends and day with her and Earn’s daughter Lodi. Van brought her daughter on set to be with her as she was set to appear in a television show. The day turns for the worst when Lodi interrupts the set and an unseen producer takes a liking to Lodi’s youthfulness. As a result, Lodi is added to a number of shows being filmed on-site, but it proves to be too overwhelming for Van who is forced to put an end to it by the conclusion of the episode.

Here are some of the biggest takeaways that we have after season four’s fifth episode.

One Time For The Good Children Of The World

Lodi is a great kid. We see several examples to support that in Work Ethic! She doesn’t fuss when her mom doesn’t have snacks for her during their time on the TV site. She adorably defends her mom when Van’s character is disrespected in a scene from the show. Lodi is also well-behaved as Van gets her hair and makeup done in a trailer. Van and Lodi’s day on set was going to be a long one, and Lodi’s good behavior through it all made it a lot easier. To Van’s surprise, Lodi really enjoyed acting and interacting with the other actors. With all that being said, one time for the good children of the world like Lodi who make their parents’ days a bit easier.

They’re Always Watching

You can’t help but feel there’s some government-esque theme to the Work Ethic! episode. The tv production studio that Van and Lodi are at is run by a man named Mr. Chocolate whom the cast and crew of the shows have never seen in person. They’ve only heard his voice which blares from various speakers as he delivers instructions for scenes as he sits in his office watching everything go down thanks to a complex surveillance system set up to monitor the entire tv production studio. It certainly has a Big Brother feel to it, and when it comes to the world of Atlanta, there’s no doubt that they’re always watching. As for the real world, well, there are probably fewer differences than there are similarities.

Mother’s Intuition Is A Real Thing

From the very beginning, Van knew something was off with Mr. Chocolate’s appreciation — or rather — infatuation with Lodi. She sits Lodi down and makes it clear that she will take her home the second she doesn’t want to be on set anymore. Unlike Van, Lodi is having a blast on set but that doesn’t make Van any less worried. Things only get worse when Van, and no one else on set, can track down Lodi as she moves around the tv production studio as Mr. Chocolate, the unseen man, is the only one who knows of her whereabouts. Push comes to shove, and Van breaks into Mr. Chocolate’s headquarters to confront him and she eventually reconnects with Lodi. It’s clear that something weird is going on with Mr. Chocolate and his company, especially as he admits to owning the police, and Van lets her intuition drive her to find Lodi and get her away from Mr. Chocolate as quickly as possible.

Control And Consent Are Key

Control and consent being key are the main themes of the Work Ethic! episode. Mr. Chocolate wants and has control of every and anyone that works at the tv production studio. He doesn’t really ask for his cast and crew’s consent to have them do certain things, it’s his world and he decides what does and doesn’t happen in it. On the flip side, Van wants Lodi to have true control of her possible acting career, along with Van herself being able to control how much and when her daughter is used for filming episodes. With this, also comes Van’s hope that Lodi can at least be of age before consenting to everything that comes with an acting career. Van is raising her daughter to know that control and consent and two important things to have and be aware of in this world, something that Lodi will surely appreciate when she grows up.

FX’s ‘Atlanta’ airs on Thursdays at 10:00pm EST.
