Rob Zombie Wasn’t Allowed To Make His ‘Munsters’ Reboot Black-And-White So He Made A Deranged Technicolor Funhouse Instead

Rob Zombie loves to do things his own way. He released the controversial House of 1000 Corpses and the fan-despised Halloween reboot, along with a handful of horror-inspired albums. And even when his stuff does badly, he just keeps making things because it’s fun. And that’s what it’s all about! Also, to be spooked. That’s what it’s about, too.

Zombie’s latest project is the family-friendly adaptation of The Munsters, which dropped on Netflix this week. Even though Zombie is known for his blood-soaked horror, this movie is pretty much as PG as you can get. “A lot of people have said to me: ‘Finally, I can watch one of your movies with my kids,’ which I don’t have kids so that’s kind of meaningless to me. But that’s nice!” Zombie recently told Variety. “This is how I got into everything as a kid. This is for the next wave of monster fans coming our way. This movie is the gateway drug for more hardcore horror.”

The Munsters stars Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman Munster, Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily Munster, and Daniel Roebuck as Grandpa Munster, while Butch Patrick, who played Eddie Munster in the original series, makes a cameo. The movie is supposed to be some wholesome spooky fun, though Zombie was limited in what he could do. Originally, Zombie was looking to make the whole movie black and white as a nod to the original series, but the studio would not let him.

“When they were in the trailer, the studio wanted to take those few moments and make them color because they thought if people see a black-and-white shot they’ll be confused,” Zombie explains. “I’m like, ‘People aren’t that f*cking stupid.’” The movie is fully in color, bright and rich and saturated within an inch of its life, aside from some one-off scenes in black and white.

Though Zombie was unable to make his Munsters as he intended, the director didn’t let it slow him down. “Sometimes you’re dealt a certain scenario. You can walk away from it, but that doesn’t create anything. You figure out how to deal with it,” Zombie says. “Sometimes you create something you would have never created.” And thus, the PG Munsters movie was born, out of something that was never supposed to be created Hey, at least it isn’t Morbius.

The Munsters is now streaming on Netflix.

Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse’ Receives New Criticism Over A Jeffery Dahmer Line Following Netflix’s Series

Netflix released its Ryan Murphy-created limited series Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story last week. The 10-episode arc stars Evan Peters as Dahmer, who is known for serially killing (and cannibalizing) 17 victims from 1978 and 1991. After watching it, the internet is upset with… Katy Perry?

People who have watched The Jeffery Dahmer Story are now revisiting Perry’s 2013 No. 1 smash “Dark Horse” featuring Juicy J and debating the Memphis rapper of Three 6 Mafia fame’s verse that references Dahmer: “She’s a beast, I call her Karma / She eat your heart out like Jeffrey Dahmer / Be careful, try not to lead her on.” Some people are disgusted, some find it weird to be upset about an old song, and some are dragging Kesha’s 2010 song “Cannibal” into the mix. (This is not the first time “Dark Horse” has given Perry headaches, by the way.)

According to the official plot synopsis, The Jeffrey Dahmer Story “examines the gruesome and horrific true crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer and the systemic failures that enabled one of America’s most notorious serial killers to continue his murderous spree in plain sight for over a decade.” All 10 episodes are available to stream on Netflix. But if Twitter rabbit holes are your preferred entertainment, see examples of the burgeoning “Dark Horse” discourse below.

Omar Apollo Reacts To His ‘Billboard’ Hot 100 Debut: ‘Y’all Got Me Bricked Up’

2022 has been a breakthrough year for Omar Apollo: The Mexican-American singer is appearing for the first time on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week with his song “Evergreen.”

Billboard refreshed its weekly Hot 100 chart today (September 27) and Apollo’s name is on there for the first time ever. He debuted at No. 62 with the sensual cut “Evergreen” from his debut album Ivory. In the past week, the song was streamed 7.4 million times in the US, which resulted in a 70 percent uptick compared to the week prior. “Evergreen” also debuted at No. 35 on Streaming Songs chart.

Billboard attributed Apollo’s rise in streams for “Evergreen” to his NPR Tiny Desk concert that was released last week. As part of Latinx Heritage Month, he kicked off the El Tiny series. In NPR’s studios, he performed “Evergreen” and other songs from Ivory like “En El Olvido” and “Endlessly.” “Evergreen” has also been used in over 300,000 videos on TikTok.

Over on Twitter, Apollo reacted to the news of his first Hot 100 debut. With celebration and crying emojis, he first wrote, “What is happening.” He later tweeted, “My first hot 100 entry b*tch wow.” Apollo wrote soon after that the his fans had him feeling “bricked up” over the song’s success.

Next month Apollo will heading out on his Prototype Tour. The tour kicks off in San Diego, California in October and later wraps up in Toronto, Ontario in November.

All The Best New Indie Music From This Week

Indie music has grown to include so much. It’s not just music that is released on independent labels but speaks to an aesthetic that deviates from the norm and follows its own weirdo heart. It can come in the form of rock music, pop, or folk. In a sense, it says as much about the people that are drawn to it as it does about the people that make it.

Every week, Uproxx is rounding up the best new indie music from the past seven days. This week we got new music from Alex G, The 1975, Mac DeMarco, and more.

Alex G — God Save The Animals

This week, Alex G dropped his tenth studio album God Save The Animals, and it’s already shaping up to be his magnum opus. The 13-track effort combines bluesy influences on tracks like “Mission” and “No Bitterness,” heard most distinctly on 2017’s Rocket, while leaning into experimentation like the auto-tuned number “S.D.O.S” and “Cross The Sea.”

Khruangbin, Vieux Farka Touré — Ali

Texas trio Khruangbin are known for their unmistakable jam band-like chemistry both on stage and in the studio. That magic doesn’t get lost — only amplified — on their collaborations. After dropping the silky-smooth EP Texas Moon in collaboration with Leon Bridges, Khruangbin honor a legendary musician with Ali, an ode to Mali’s renowned musician Ali Farka Touré. Recorded with his son, Vieux Farka Touré, Ali combines Khruangbin’s signature psychedelic guitar with the inspired sounds of Touré’s West African hits.

The Wonder Years — The Hum Goes On Forever

The Wonder Years‘ early albums were all about suburbia woes. But this time around, The Wonder Years had a different inspiration for their music: parenthood. With their latest album The Hum Goes On Forever, the pop-punk veterans continue with their aesthetic that first set them apart from the pack, while also honing their sound (and leaning on a helping hand from none other than pop punk legend Mark Hoppus). Overall, The Hum Goes On Forever manages to be both melancholy and inspiring, proving that you never truly lose your punk edge, even in parenthood.

Remember Sports — Leap Day

Remember Remember Sports? They’ve been building a steady catalog of power pop songs since 2017, their latest album arriving just last year. But this week, the band returned with a surprise EP, the four-track project Leap Day. Laced with frenetic riffs and explosive refrains, vocalist/guitarist Carmen Perry aptly describes the project as “a great EP for walking around your neighborhood on a sunny day and noticing things you never noticed before.”

Wild Pink — “See You Better Now” Feat. J Mascis

Following up Wild Pink’s 2021 album of the year contender A Billion Little Lights, the band have been moving from strength to strength with the singles off their upcoming LP ILYSM. The latest, “See You Better Now,” is wistful and nostalgic and even features a guitar solo by J Mascis. Wild Pink’s John Ross calls the track the “most straightforward love song on the album” and notes it was inspired by Tom Petty and Traveling Wilburys, which certainly comes through in Ross’ talky cadence.

Alvvays — “Belinda Says”

Fans have been patiently awaiting a new album from Alvvays following the Canadian indie-pop group’s 2017 sophomore release. But the wait is close to over, as the band are releasing their next project, Blue Rev, next month. Their latest single “Belinda Says” is a dreamy ode to ’80s pop icon Belinda Carlisle, and references her hit “Heaven Is A Place On Earth.” The song starts off with an explosion of fuzzy instrumentals which perfectly compliment vocalist Molly Rankin’s magnetism.

The 1975 — “All I Need To Hear”

The 1975 have been showing off their diverse songwriting abilities with the recent singles off the forthcoming Being Funny In A Foreign Language. They’ve delivered the folksy track “Part Of The Band” and the exuberant pop anthem “I’m In Love With You.” But this time, The 1975 show off their romantic side with the piano ballad “All I Need To Hear.” The slowed-down number is sincere and swooning, perfect for setting a late-night mood or taking the floor for a first dance at a wedding.

Mac DeMarco, Snail Mail — “A Cuckhold’s Refrain – Peppermint Patty”

It’s been a little while since Mac DeMarco has put out an album (since 2019’s Here Comes The Cowboy to be exact), but his new collaboration with Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan proves he hasn’t lost his musical talent or his humorous edge. The song, titled “A Cuckhold’s Refrain,” is booth tongue-in-cheek and groovy, somehow managing to be a jam even while using the lyrics “scrub a dub dub.”

Tenci — “Vanishing Coin”

Chicago band Tenci first won over hearts with their pastoral charm and lead singer Jess Shoman’s unique, throaty lyrical delivery. Now preparing their sophomore album A Swollen River, A Well Overflowing, the band makes it clear they haven’t let go of their enveloping sound, only refined it on the new track “Vanishing Coin.” The new songs carry a new perspective, a result of the band becoming older and wiser, which is reflected throughout “Vanishing Coin,” a song about the ebbs and flows of friendships.

Miss Grit — “Like You”

After turning heads with two critically acclaimed EPs over the past few years, Miss Grit is coming off a newly inked deal with Mute for their new single, “Like You.” The track is haunting, catchy, and vibrant, inspired by our inner voices and the actions they encouraged. “I had the character of Ex Machina in mind as the voice I was singing from,” Miss Grit said of the song. “Her arc in the movie felt really beautiful to me, and I wanted to reach the same ending as her in this song.”

EXO’s Xiumin Shows A ‘Brand New’ Side Of Himself In His Much-Anticipated Solo Debut

It’s been a long time coming for EXO-Ls and K-pop fans, but Xiumin finally released his first ever solo project in the year 2022.

The eldest member of EXO released his much-anticipated solo debut on Monday, September 26 with a five-track EP titled Brand New, with a lead single of the same name. The debut project pays homage to the sounds of the ’90s and early 2000s with old school, electronic dance, hip-hop, and retro ballad influences. Kid Cudi Drops The Tracklist For His ‘Entergalactic’ Album, Which He Insists Is ‘Not A Soundtrack’

Kid Cudi’s passion project Entergalactic premieres on Netflix in just a few days on September 30, and the album, also entitled Entergalactic, hits streaming platforms the same day. He revealed most of the album was made three years ago but that the Kenya Barris-assisted series is the “greatest piece of art” he’s ever made.

It’s a joy to see Cudi honing in on his pursuit of happiness amidst his ongoing social media feud with Kanye West and Mike Dean. Maybe we’ll have the pleasure to read all about those complicated relationships and others in his upcoming memoir.

We’ve heard the single off the new album featuring Ty Dolla Sign, “Willing To Trust” and well…an alleged leaked album with nothing but fart sounds on wax. But don’t fret because Cudi has released an official tracklist that we can trust.

The Cleveland native called upon the likes of 2 Chainz, Don Toliver, Steve Aoki and Dot Da Genius on this one and promises Entergalactic the album is not to be mistaken for a soundtrack to the Netflix special but yet another Cudi offering to enjoy after his long hiatus; He wrote in response to a tweet, “NOT A SOUNDTRACK.”

Smino Shares The Release Date For ’90 Proof,’ His Upcoming Song With J. Cole

We last heard from St. Louis rapper Smino earlier this month, when he released the Phoelix-produced single “24-8.” It was the first new solo song from him since he’d announced his upcoming third studio album, Luv 4 Rent — his first since leaving Interscope for Motown in 2021. The iconoclastic rapper has been pretty cagey about his new album since then, but today, he finally revealed some new information about its upcoming single. Titled “90 Proof,” the new song will also feature J. Cole. Earlier this month, he previewed the slow-burning single on St. Louis radio while streaming with fans on Instagram Live.

Although Smi’s been relatively quiet on the solo tip since dropping “I Deserve” last year, he hasn’t been in complete hibernation. Early this year, he reconnected with Chicago rapper Saba and 6lack on Saba’s Few Good Things single “Still,” linked up with British singer Tiana Major9 on “2 Seater,” and appeared on albums by Lucky Daye, Syd, and Earthgang.

Although Smino’s last album, Noir, came out nearly four years ago, he hasn’t left fans hanging. In 2020, he used the free time provided by quarantine to record a surprise mixtape, She Already Decided. It has since been removed from the internet — officially — but we’re sure you’re can still find it if you’re hungry enough. In the meantime, you can look forward to Luv 4 Rent in October and its lead single, “90 Proof,” dropping this Friday.

Jenna Ortega Felt Like She Was ‘Having A Panic Attack’ When Christina Ricci Joined The Cast Of ‘Wednesday’

Christina Ricci was not the first person to play or voice Wednesday Addams, but her deadpan goth performance in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values is the most famous interpretation of the character. So it’s no wonder that Jenna Ortega was “terrified” to portray Gomez and Morticia’s daughter in Netflix’s Wednesday. It didn’t calm her nerves when Ricci joined the cast in an undisclosed role, either.

“I felt like I was genuinely having a panic attack when I was told,” the X breakout told Empire. “I was terrified. She’s a really cool lady. I was fine meeting her, but the first time we did a scene together and she had to see me done up the way she was done up 30 years ago, it was nerve-racking.” How do you think young Misty on Yellowjackets feels?

Ortega continued:

“It’s really important to me that I wasn’t ripping anyone off. Christina Ricci’s performance is flawlessly done. It’s pitch-perfect and I wouldn’t change anything about it, which is another reason it was hard for me to do this job.”

As long as there isn’t a scene set on Thanksgiving, no one will accuse of Ortega of copying Ricci (and if they do, well, Ricci copied Lisa Loring first).

Wednesday premieres on Netflix on November 23.

A Former GOP Congressman Says His MAGA Mom Essentially Disowned Him After He Publicly Criticized Trump

Denver Riggleman has got a new kind of mommy issue, the Trump era kind. As The Hill reports, the former Republican congressman was essentially disowned by the woman who gave birth to him after he denounced Trump and QAnon while appearing on CNN.

Riggleman, who served Virginia’s 5th District for a single term between 2019 and 2021 (and was accused of having a “Bigfoot erotica fetish” by his opponent in 2018), reveals the dirty details of he and his mom’s political brouhaha in a new book, Breach, which he has been promoting as a behind-the-scenes look at the January 6th Committee, where he was previously a senior staffer. While the bulk of the book is about the Capitol riots directly, Riggleman did include some personal anecdotes — including how it broke his mom’s heart to see him attacking those wacky followers of Q and, by extension, Donald Trump.

On October 14, 2020, Riggleman sat down with Jake Tapper to express his growing concern about Trump’s very public embrace of the QAnon community and its wackadoo theories — which did not sit well with Mama Riggleman.

“What will it take to wake you up, son,” Riggleman’s mom apparently texted him. “I love you so, but cannot stand by and listen to your elitist attitude and being praised by elitist journalist and democrats.”

She finished her tirade by congratulating him for being “part of the swamp” then told him: “I’m sorry you were ever elected.” (Ouch!) “You are officially a politician,” she continued. “I have cried over you and my heart is broken by you.”

“I knew my mom and I were not on the same page politically, but this is something else,” Riggleman writes in Breach. “Any hope for a mostly normal relationship seemed dim. She was damn near disavowing me.”

So one can only hope that Riggleman’s mom wasn’t watching 60 Minutes this weekend, as the former congressman appeared and stood by his previous claim that there are texts providing “irrefutable, time-stamped proof of a comprehensive plot at all levels of government to overturn the election.”

Though Riggleman wrote that he and his mom were able to reconnect when they came together to support his sister during a health crisis, he hasn’t given up hope on one day changing her mind regarding Trump — and never disclosed his work with the January 6th Committee to her.

“If I can help even one person turn away from this fringe conspiracy culture or recognize Trump for the un-American grifter that he is, it would make everything worth it,” Riggleman writes. “I’d be especially happy if that one person was my mom.”

Lonzo Ball Hopes To Return This Season After A Second Surgery To Fix His Continuing Knee Issues

The Chicago Bulls held media day on Monday, but notably absent was Lonzo Ball, as the star guard is in Los Angeles where he will have his second knee surgery of the year later this week.

Ball played in just 35 games last season before suffering a torn meniscus and having surgery in January. That procedure was supposed to keep him out for a month-plus, but Ball never returned to the court for the Bulls as he suffered setbacks and continued knee soreness and pain throughout the spring and summer. On Tuesday, Ball spoke with the media via Zoom from L.A. and offered some somber updates on his status, noting that his knee soreness isn’t just a basketball issue, but is something that impacts him day-to-day on things like walking up a flight of stairs and he can’t run or jump currently.

The 24-year-old guard is remaining hopeful that he’ll make his return this season at some point, calling it a “worst case scenario” for him to miss all season and that he’s not thinking about that as a real possibility.

From a basketball perspective, Ball’s presence is incredibly important for the Bulls because of the pace he plays with and his passing acumen, which opens up the floor for everyone else. On defense, he’s a terrific off-ball defender who, when combined with Alex Caruso, presents a bold backcourt defensive pairing.

However, this is first and foremost a situation of a young man who needs to get back to being comfortable physically in his everyday life before even discussing what he can do on the basketball court, and hopefully this next surgery can clear him up to do that and get back on the floor.
