The Director Of ‘Smile’ Somehow Thought Nobody Would Notice Their Incredibly Creepy Baseball Marketing Campaign

On paper, Smile might seems like another run-of-the-mill horror movie a la Ma or The Black Phone. It doesn’t seem like a movie that will go down as a classic or keep you up at night, but it might give you a good scare or two when you are trying to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and accidentally look at yourself in the mirror.

Director Parker Finn took the inherently silly premise of “hey, what if smiling was actually scary?” and just ran with it, which is a very honorable thing to do. But the real magic of Smile, which hits theaters this Friday, is their A+ marketing team that thought “hey, what if smiling while watching baseball was scary?” And it worked!

Smile follows a doctor, played by Sosie Bacon, who becomes haunted by smiling people after one of her patients attacks her. To promote the movie, Paramount decided to buy out some late-season MLB tickets (a very expensive endeavor!) and have seat fillers smiling for all eight innings on TV. We all know how hard that can be hard to do when you’re watching the Mets.

At first, Finn was unsure if people would notice.”I’ve got to say, Paramount marketing has been very clever with some of the tricks they’ve had up their sleeves for this film,” Finn told EW. “This is something that had been discussed a little while back and we were all kind of like crossing our fingers that somebody might notice.” The people definitely noticed.

After the stunt went viral, Finn was impressed with just how much it worked. “It was happening just organically and it was overwhelming how much that took off,” he added. “It was just instantly everywhere. Kudos for them for their terrific idea.”

Considering the fact that the movie takes place in New Jersey…it’s definitely valid for people to be afraid! They don’t even have their own major league baseball team.

Smile hits theaters this Friday.

Lil Nas X’s Setlist Of Songs For The ‘Long Live Montero Tour’

Lil Nas X hit a major career milestone earlier this month when he launched his first-ever concert tour, the Long Live Montero Tour. He’s been on the road for a few weeks, which makes now a good time to ask the question: What does his setlist look like?

Setlist.fm, the most comprehensive resource for concert setlists available online, has the answer. According to their data, the rapper has been rolling out the same setlist each time, which makes sense given how highly produced the show is. So far, he’s been opening with “Panini,” closing his main set with “Industry Baby,” and coming back for a one-song encore of “Star Walkin’.”

When it comes to album-by-album representation, Montero songs have made the most setlist appearances, while the 7 EP is second, which makes sense given that those are his two only releases so far and Montero has more songs than does 7.

Check out the average setlist (so far) for the Long Live Montero Tour below.

1. “Panini”
2. “Tales Of Dominica”
3. “Sun Goes Down”
4. “Old Town Road”
5. “Rodeo”
6. “Dead Right Now”
7. “Don’t Want It”
8. “That’s What I Want”
9. “Lost In The Citadel”
10. “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”
11. “Down Souf Hoes”
12. “Scoop”
13. “Industry Baby”
14. “Star Walkin’ (encore)

This Conversation Between Doc Rivers And James Harden About How The Sixers Can Be ‘Unbeatable’ Is Spectacular

The NBA has tried to give fans more access to things that happen on the court over the years. It is not nearly as much as some would like, and there are certainly ways for the league to give people more and more, although it’s not hard to understand why teams and players might not like to fully pull the curtain back and reveal all of their secrets.

Regardless, when that curtain does get pulled back, it can be really, really good. This isn’t usually the case when a player or coach is mic’d up during a game, as they generally speak in platitudes and what not, but every now and then, you get something really, really good — Kevin Durant’s discussion with a referee is a good example of what happens when this works out well.

On Thursday, we got another example of this by way of the Philadelphia 76ers’ training camp practice that aired on NBA TV. After things wrapped up, Doc Rivers pulled James Harden aside for a conversation in which we saw an NBA head coach and one of the NBA’s best players have a lengthy conversation about how the team can become “unbeatable.” It is a rare glimpse into this sort of conversation and it is nothing short of excellent.

This is so much better than, like, a video of Jason Kidd screaming “GOOD JOB, LUKA” during a Mavericks game or whatever we normally get during TV broadcasts of basketball games. More of this, please.

Watch ‘Grand Encounters’ To Help You Pair Cocktails With Your Vibe

Hitting a cocktail bar and looking at a menu full of funky names, random mixes of ingredients (some you might not have even heard of), and hefty prices can be daunting — that can also be true even if you’re already fully into cocktail culture. However, a good bartender can provide you with a drink experience that is tailored for you. All you have to do is strike up a conversation.

In that spirit, we introduce UPROXX’s new series, Grand Encounters — where mixologist and author Shannon Mustipher sits down with creators from different walks of life to share stories and build them a bespoke cocktail featuring Grand Marnier and its blend of cognac and orange. In the premiere episode, Mustipher is joined by up-and-coming music star Otis Kane. Like any great bartender, Mustipher dives into what excites Kane, where he comes from, and where he’s going before creating a cocktail that fits his vibe.

While you might not get this same level of service at your local cocktail bar when it’s packed on a Friday night, it’s the sort of experience you’d expect from the greats when there’s time to dive into what makes the perfect cocktail for you. After hearing about Kane’s work behind the boards in music studios, his shift to behind the mic, and his Black, Jamaican, Mexican, and American heritage, Mustipher devises a “Flor de Jamaica” for Kane—a take on a hibiscus margarita.

The cocktail balances blanco tequila, fresh lime juice, hibiscus syrup, and “the star of the show?” Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge, a unique blend of cognac and orange, which adds a layer of complexity to the cocktail. After a shake and a pour, Mustipher and Kane are enjoying a pink cocktail with a salted rim that looks as delicious as it sounds.

Watch the whole episode above to learn more about Otis Kane and how to make Shannon Mustipher’s Flor de Jamaica cocktail, now renamed “The Grand Otis Kane!”

Mayim Bialik Gets The Same Text ‘Report’ From Her Mom After Every Episode Of ‘Jeopardy!’ She Hosts

Mayim Bialik has starred on multiple sitcoms, including The Big Bang Theory and Blossom, and she’s the host of one of the successful game shows of all-time in Jeopardy!. She also inspired a great Simpsons joke. But despite all that, and the fact that she’s a 46-year-old adult, she still hears from her mom every night.

While appearing on Wednesday’s episode of The Late Late Show With James Corden, Bialik revealed that her mom had never heard of Jeopardy! until she started hosting it. “She was excited, but she didn’t know anything about what Jeopardy! is. She kept asking me, ‘Why is everything in a question?’ That’s a true story,” she said. To be fair, it is kind of confusing But now, Bialik gets a text after every episode she’s in.

“She will send me screenshots of every episode in case I forgot what I was wearing in that particular episode. I’ll get a little report like, ‘I really liked this blazer, not so crazy about this top.’ And she always manages to capture like a screenshot where I’m like,” she said, pausing to make an unflattering face, “in the middle of it, and I would just think like, ‘She’s got a whole half-hour find a better screenshot.’” Moms, am I right?

Arctic Monkeys Release The Sultry Single ‘Body Paint’ With A New Video

Arctic Monkeys have been prepping for the release of their forthcoming album The Car through stunning singles like “There’d Better Be A Mirrorball” and crazy shows like the one at Kings Theater in Brooklyn. Today, they’re back with a new track from the LP called “Body Paint” with a video filmed in London.

The four-and-a-half-minute ballad moves slowly, twinkling and glowing as Alex Turner’s voice serves as the centerpiece: “For a master of deception and subterfuge / You’ve made yourself quite the bed, to lie in,” he sings. The build-up leads to stunning guitar riffs and a cathartic outro where Turner’s vocals become more free-spirited and let go. “Body Paint” falls only halfway through the album, and they’re set to perform it tonight on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

About making this new record, Turner said in an interview, “There’s a bunch of Led Zeppelin and Stones records where they were in this house in the country, and then they went and sorted it all out and overdubbed it elsewhere. We went there in the summer, took all the equipment, got the raw material and then took it on elsewhere.”

Watch the video for “Body Paint” above.

The Car is out 10/21 via Domino. Pre-order it here.

Trevor Noah Was Physically Pained When Biden Asked If A Dead Congresswoman Was In The Room: ‘On The Upside, At Least He Noticed She Was Not There’

Joe Biden gave the Republicans who regularly question his mental acuity a cringe-worthy feast of material on Wednesday when he attempted to give a shout-out to former Indiana congresswoman Jackie Walorski during the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health. Walorski, of course, was not there — as she and two of her staffers were tragically killed in a car crash on August 3, while returning from a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Trevor Noah shared the painfully awkward clip with viewers on Wednesday night, which he practically had to watch from between his fingers. While thanking lawmakers at the event from the podium, Biden asked, “Jackie, are you here? Where’s Jackie?” And yes, it was as awkward as you’d imagine.

Noooooooooo!,” was Noah’s immediate reply to the unfortunate gaffe. “Noooo, Joe! What are you doing?!? Ahhhhhhh… that’s so awkward! And his explanation didn’t help. He was like, ‘Of course I knew Jackie was dead. I was looking for Jackie Kennedy. Where’s Jackie Kennedy? Where are you, Jackie? Where’s Jackie O?”

But Noah, in a desperate search for some silver lining, managed to find a sliver: “I mean, I guess on the upside he noticed that she wasn’t there. That’s a good thing! It could’ve been much worse if he was like, ‘Where’s Jackie? Oh, there she is. There’s Jackie. Everyone look at Jackie!”

While Noah acknowledged that many people are pointing to the whoopsie as yet another senior moment from the soon-to-be octogenarian, The Daily Show host insists that, “if anything, this makes Biden a better president. Think of how hard he must be working right now to keep Americans safe knowing that Osama bin Laden is still out there somewhere.”

You can watch the full clip above, beginning around the 3:45 mark.
