Kid Cudi’s Multimedia Project ‘Entergalactic’ Is Groundbreaking But Not In The Way You Think

Contrary to what Kid Cudi has said multiple times in the promotional media tour for his new multimedia project Entergalactic, the practice of using a long-form visual film as a delivery system for new music has been around for decades. Almost from the time music videos became a way to market new singles, artists have pushed the boundaries of the format, resulting in short films, anthologies, and musical films.

Michael Jackson put out Moonwalker in 1988, pairing several of the singles from his album Bad with short films, concert footage, and archival clips. In it, he turns into a freaking robot; this sequence was later used as the basis for an arcade beat-’em-up video game. In 2003, Daft Punk turned their album Discovery into an anime, the clunkily titled Interstella 5555: The 5tory Of The 5ecret 5tar 5ystem. This film introduced narrative to the form, soundtracking each sequence with a song from the album to unspool the tale of a group of musical blue aliens thwarting an evil music manager (high cinema, this was not).

More recently, Beyonce’s musical anthology Black Is King, which was released on Disney Plus in 2020 as a visual companion to her 2019 album The Lion King: The Gift, is itself a musical companion to the live-action remake of The Lion King. It hybridized both approaches above, using a string of colorful but disparate music videos to pull together a loose narrative mirroring that of the original film, with an outcast monarch returning to claim his throne. Even Guapdad 4000 put together a short film for his album 1176 titled Stoop Kid earlier this year, plugging the project’s more emotive singles into a semi-autobiographical day-in-the-life coming-of-age tale.

I say all of that to say that Kid Cudi’s Entergalactic is not “groundbreaking” in the sense that it’s never been done before. However, what sets it apart is its beautiful animation, which is used in service of an old-school rom-com that film industry professionals are quick to tell us has nearly gone extinct. Despite Cudi’s insistence on calling it a “special” (artists, amirite?), it holds up as a movie in its own right. While watching it on Netflix, I could see myself paying the now-exorbitant price of a movie ticket, leaning back in the coziest seat in a darkened theater, and downing a bucket of popcorn after Nicole Kidman regales me with the wonders of taking in a film at AMC (and I don’t even like popcorn).

And when I say old-school rom-com, I mean a straight-up New York City, When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail, 27 Dresses classic of the genre — with some twists. For one, it centers Black folks in a way that a lot of standard-issue rom-coms do not. The central couple — Kid Cudi’s Jabari and Jessica Williams’ Meadow — is Black, their world revolves around a diverse array of characters (played by Cudi’s friends like Ty Dolla Sign, Vanessa Hudgens, Jaden Smith, and Timothée Chalamet, who inexplicably resembles Logic here), and their eccentric, artistic occupations. The film also indulges in many of the most sacred tropes of the genre but isn’t afraid to play with them.

For instance, there isn’t just one meet-cute: There are several near misses before Jabari and Meadow finally cross paths and set off on their love story. Their dates are highlighted by selections from the album; when Jabari meets Meadow for the first time, “Angel” significantly plays in the background. A bike ride through the city is backtracked by “Willing To Trust” with Ty Dolla Sign. Cudi and Williams display easy chemistry, while the animation — which has been compared to Spider-Man: Enter The Spider-Verse, although I find it more in line with Netflix’s equally excellent animated series Arcane — is as detailed as it is stylized, effectively conveying characters’ emotions while dazzling with psychedelic imagery and vivid color.

As far as the album goes, it falls somewhere in the middle of Cudi’s output; it’s nowhere as bland as Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven or Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’ but fails to reach the heights of his debut Man On The Moon: The End Of Day or his most recent release, Man On The Moon III: The Chosen. The songwriting is almost painfully earnest — but why is that such a bad thing? A fun effect of releasing the album alongside a visual companion is that each forces the listener/viewer to consider itself in the light of the other. Where a cynical critic — i.e. most of us — would sneer down our noses at the album’s sincerity, the film’s theme skews that perspective. Because our heroes cannot find love unless they are willing to strip off their armor and be as vulnerable as Cudi is in his music. That he limits himself to his usual themes could be seen as creative timidity or, as with the crowd-pleasing tropes of romantic comedy, it could be seen as giving the people what they want.

Not every element of the movie or the album works well in concert with all the others — subplots involving Jabari’s anxiety about selling out at work and a dating app turning out to be a scam go nowhere after a lot of buildups. These subplots appear to attempt to inject social commentary into the film’s narrative, but they’re mostly pretty superficial and not very insightful. But since when do we come to Kid Cudi for social commentary? It’s okay that everything isn’t perfect; that’s one of the messages that has permeated Cudi’s music since day one. Now, it saturates his filmography, which like his music, has shown what a genre is capable of if only one is willing to take a chance.

Entergalactic is out now via Wicked Awesome/Republic. The special is now streaming on Netflix.

Why Is Trevor Noah Leaving ‘The Daily Show?’

Jon Stewart left The Daily Show seven years ago, and it’s fair to say that the world looks completely different now. Those seven years have seen enormous strife and plenty of downs (and some ups) for mankind with Trevor Noah presiding as master of ceremonies on the satiric late-night show. And Noah kept things both funny and critical throughout the pandemic, the George Floyd protests, and so many more difficult sources of upheaval. This week (and apparently to the surprise of his staff, along with the Comedy Central audience), Noah announced that he’ll leave the gig where he dealt out the show’s brand of cultural commentary for seven years. What happened?

No immediate answers exist to that question, but one big factor would be that Noah signed a five-year contract in 2017, which means that he didn’t sign a renewal deal. There’s no telling whether this has to do with a personal choice or if ratings had any say in the matter, but Noah did guide people (with scathing humor) through the Trump administration and more. He also declared, “I realized that after the seven years, my time is up.” He then added, “But in the most beautiful way, honestly.” Here’s more:

“I’ve loved hosting this show. It’s been one of my greatest challenges. It’s been one of my greatest joys. I’ve loved trying to figure out how to make people laugh even when the stories are particularly sh*tty on the worst days.”

From there, Comedy Central issued a statement of gratitude towards Noah while pointing out that there’s “no timetable for his departure.” In other words, they’ve got the luxury of (some) time to figure out who might host next. Perhaps they’ll go Jeopardy! style and choose more than one host? There’s no telling, but Roy Wood, Jr., Desi Lydic, and Ronny Chieng are onboard as contributors, and a social media groundswell is building for Samantha Bee to take the reins. She possibly possesses the bandwidth (due to another recent programming development) to do so. There’s been no definitive word on that subject, and of course, there are plenty of The Daily Show contributors on hand if producers decide to promote from the inside. Or maybe they’ll even swing back to Jordan Klepper. Hopefully, we’ll hear more soon.

Natti Natasha And María Becerra Bring All The Latino Men To The Yard In Their ‘Lokita’ Video

Natti Natasha travels to Argentina in her new music video for “Lokita” featuring María Becerra. In the video that was released today (September 30), the Dominican superstar and Becerra call out for Latino men around the world to join them for a good time.

“Lokita” follows Natasha’s recent hit “Mayor Que Usted” where she teamed up with reggaeton pioneers Daddy Yankee and Wisin y Yandel. She is also known for supporting and teaming up with other women in the genre like Becky G, Farina, and La Duraca. Natasha keeps that empowering energy going with rising Argentine singer Becerra in “Lokita.” In the sexy reggaeton banger, Natasha and Becerra sing about the Latino men that drive them crazy. Among the Latinos they shout out in the song are men from Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and Chile.

“Working with María was very special,” Natasha said in a statement. “To be completely honest, we both enjoyed writing and recording this track together. It’s a song that I am sure will get people dancing and just enjoy it overall.”

The video for “Lokita” was shot by Nuno Gómes in Argentina’s historic Casa de La Cultura. Natasha and Becerra give fierce performances as they sort through the Latino men in their dating app. Like with the inclusive message of their song, the video features dancers from different parts of Latin America joining the duo for this epic girl power moment.

Becerra has recently positioned herself as one of Argentina’s top artists. In the past year, she’s been tapped for collaborations by global acts like J Balvin, Camila Cabello, and Prince Royce. Natasha will feature on Meghan Trainor‘s Takin’ It Back album that will be released on October 21.

Jean Dawson Unveils The Invigorating ‘Chaos Now*’ Single ‘Sick Of It*’

Jean Dawson’s album, aptly titled Chaos Now*, is just one week away, and the singles have been getting crazier with each release. So far there’s been “Pirate Radio*,” “Three Heads*,” and “Porn Acting*,” and today he’s back with the even bigger song “Sick Of It*.”

“Sick Of It*” leans into his eccentric edge, diving into hyper-pop and anthemic pop-punk. It bursts with noise that it almost sounds like being at a show and standing too close to the speakers; it doesn’t really matter because all you have to hear is the rhythm in order to dance along. It ends quickly and abruptly, serving as just a brief flash of invigorating mayhem.

Dawson is such an inventive, compelling force that he was one of Travis Barker’s key musical discoveries of 2020, according to our 2020 interview with the Blink-182 drummer: “He’s someone that’s really taking genres and throwing them all together and doing something different, in a time where so many people determine what their sound is gonna be like by whatever’s popular on the radio. And then you have a fresh breath of air like Jean Dawson. Like, thank God, you know?”

Thigh Society – makin’ it easy to love ‘thigh-self’

Now that fall is here, there’s one thing in particular that doesn’t go away with cooler temperatures: chub rub. If you’ve never experienced the excruciating friction that can come from sweaty thighs rubbing together, well, count yourself one of the lucky few. For the rest of us mere mortals, Thigh Society’s slip shorts are our saving grace! Here’s why:

Big thighs, small thighs, dimply or pimply ones, furry ones, shapely ones – no matter what your thighs look like, they take you where you want to go. Which is why you need to take care of them. This female-founded company gets that. And that’s why they’ve created the ultimate thigh protectors. Because Marnie, the Thigh Society founder, experienced the very same thing: chub rub. That anytime rub that leaves your legs chafing and you feeling uncomfortable in your skin.

To combat this, Marnie would wear thick, rubbery bike shorts that, if we’re being honest, really weren’t a solution. Why? Because they ride up, roll down and don’t breathe, which is really annoying and uncomfortable.

So, in 2009, Thigh Society was born with one mission in mind: make all thighs happy. So they invented the most incredible slip short: The Cooling. *Cue the hallelujahs* our prayers were answered! She finally found a solution to prevent thigh chafe! But in doing so she also realized that no two thighs are the same (maybe not even the two on your own body!) That’s why these shorts come in four different fabrics, four different lengths, and seven different sizes: from XS-6X! Because everyone deserves to love the skin they’re in, and one-size certainly does not fit all. That’s why Thigh Society has something for *almost* everyBody.

These shorts are not shapewear, because Thigh Society doesn’t want you to hide who you are. Meaning, these aren’t the suck it in and make it disappear slip shorts. These are the sun salutations, WFH, lazy Saturday, wander through the park in a dress for hours, shorts. They’re the anytime, anyplace, feel great shorts.

And with hi-tech performance fabric that pulls heat and moisture away from the body, the Cooling style, in particular, is ideal for traveling thighs, active thighs, lazy thighs and your kind of thighs! They are ultra-thin and lightweight. They’re that thinnest base layer that can keep things smooth, without bulk. And with eight different colors, the only thing left to decide is: “can you get one of each?”

Because chub rub plagues so many of us and can strike at any time of year, Thigh Society’s size-inclusive chafewear is the answer to our prayers. But don’t just take our word for it, see for yourself! The Cooling is your under dress, thigh protector, comfy non-shapewear, anti-chafing answer that will carry you through everyday activities, comfortably.

Celebrate and empower your natural body in these light-weight, comfy styles that feel good and look great, whether they’re under a dress, a pair of jeans or for when you just want that naked but not naked feeling!

Check them out here and feel the difference that proper slip shorts can make!

These dramatic readings of negative Yelp reviews are never not funny

Online reviews live in a paradoxical world of their own. Their credibility is questionable at best—with positive reviews being either incentivized (if not downright fake) and negative ones being, let’s face it, kind of bonkers. And yet, despite their blatant flaws, a large number of people still use them to influence their purchases.

One thing can be said of negative reviews however: They can be endlessly entertaining.

You might remember seeing actors “performing” impassioned, dramatic (and therefore hilarious) readings of one-star Yelp reviews a few years ago. These videos by “Gotta Kid to Feed” went viral back in 2015, and have recently been resurfacing once again. Why? Because they’re never not funny.

Take this one-star review of Dunkin’ Donuts read by actress Therese Plummer, for example. Plummer is a seasoned voiceover actress and lends her talents well in this parody to poke fun at just how intense—and maybe borderline psychotic—some reviews can be.

Unlike the scathing review of Dunkin’ Donuts, comments that flooded this video were overwhelmingly positive.

“I never found a 1 star yelp review so riveting!! “ one person wrote.

Another added, “Jesus, there is serious anger in her eyes, this woman is amazing.”

Here’s another one for O’Learys Restaurant in Saint Louis, Missouri, performed by actor Joe Plummer (oddly enough, I don’t think the two Plummer actors are related).

Joe’s character graciously gave a three-star review for the restaurant, since the food was “fresh.” It was the stabbing he didn’t care for.

Yes, he would “consider” coming back despite the stabbing. It’s like Nicole Kidman says at the beginning of every movie at AMC now, “heartbreak feels good in a place like this.” O’Leary’s was just that good.

Here’s another gem of a bad review, this time for San Francisco’s Presidio Cafe. Recognize that face? It’s actress Alysia Reiner from “Orange Is the New Black,” “Blue Bloods” and “Ms. Marvel.”

Apparently Reiner’s character “enjoyed their lunch” at the cafe, but disaster struck after a wayward bird attacked her on her way to the parking lot. Clearly the cafe’s fault.

“The management shirked their duties by not helping me more,” Reiner laments woefully. You can almost catch a single, dignified tear in her eye. She will NOT be dining there. Any. More.

“I know how she feels one time I stepped in a puddle and the nearest store refused to buy me new shoes,” one person joked.

“I guess there’s a good reason Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’ takes place in San Francisco,” quipped another.

Further proof that this art form will never go out of style, but merely evolve for modern times: a five-part TikTok series in which Britt, a woman who goes by the username @the.localhedgewitch, brilliantly recreates a negative review from 10 years ago for Bath & Body Works has been going viral online.

@the.localhedgewitch I knew that one day this would somehow come in handy #bathandbodyworks ♬ original sound – Britt

Rather than performing a dramatic reading, Britt recites the review alongside the original video while perfectly capturing every single tiny gesture and mannerism. Seriously, her method should be taught in acting classes.

OK, so maybe online reviews aren’t exactly trustworthy. But at least we can have a good laugh at humanity because of them.

Joe Biden’s 23 greatest achievements as president of the United States … so far

As we near the 2022 midterm elections, we approach the midway point of Joe Biden’s first term as president of the United States. When Biden took office, the nation was in turmoil. The COVID-19 pandemic raged due to the previous administration’s inability to confront the issue. The country was in shock after the January 6 riot at the Capitol building, which put countless members of congress’s lives in danger and democracy in peril.

The nation desperately needed a new commitment to climate change after the previous administration rolled back climate protections. America was also on shaky ground economically after the pandemic brought unemployment to its highest rate since the Great Depression and businesses struggled to stay afloat amid lockdowns and labor shortages.

Joe Biden promised steady, bi-partisan leadership at a time of intense political division and halfway through his first term, he’s kept that promise.

“Biden has governed from the center, remained sensitive to important issues affecting voters on the left and right and achieved a moderate level of congressional bipartisanship,” Thomas C. Oakes wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times.

Biden’s presidency has been transformative, although it didn’t appear to be that way in the beginning.

“Seriously, it has been amazing to watch the media narrative on the Biden administration change,” Paul Krugman wrote in The New York Times in August. “Just a few weeks ago President Biden was portrayed as hapless, on the edge of presiding over a failed presidency. Then came the Inflation Reduction Act, a big employment report and some good news on inflation, and suddenly we’re hearing a lot about his accomplishments.”

Here are 23 of Joe Biden’s greatest accomplishments as president of the United States.

1. Passed the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package to increase investment in the national network of bridges and roads, airports, public transport and national broadband internet, as well as waterways and energy systems.

2. Helped get more than 500 million life-saving COVID-19 vaccinations in the arms of Americans through the American Rescue Plan.

3. Stopped a 30-year streak of federal inaction on gun violence by signing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that created enhanced background checks, closed the “boyfriend” loophole and provided funds for youth mental health.

4. Made a $369 billion investment in climate change, the largest in American history, through the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.

5. Ended the longest war in American history by pulling the troops out of Afghanistan.

6. Provided $10,000 to $20,000 in college debt relief to Americans with loans who make under $125,000 a year.

7. Cut child poverty in half through the American Rescue Plan.

8. Capped prescription drug prices at $2,000 per year for seniors on Medicare through the Inflation Reduction Act.

9. Passed the COVID-19 relief deal that provided payments of up to $1,400 to many struggling U.S. citizens while supporting renters and increasing unemployment benefits.

10. Achieved historically low unemployment rates after the pandemic caused them to skyrocket.

11. Imposed a 15% minimum corporate tax on some of the largest corporations in the country, ensuring that they pay their fair share, as part of the historic Inflation Reduction Act.

12. Recommitted America to the global fight against climate change by rejoining the Paris Agreement.

13. Strengthened the NATO alliance in support of Ukraine after the Russian invasion by endorsing the inclusion of world military powers Sweden and Finland.

14. Authorized the assassination of the Al Qaeda terrorist Ayman al-Zawahiri, who became head of the organization after the death of Osama bin Laden.

15. Gave Medicare the power to negotiate prescription drug prices through the Inflation Reduction Act while also reducing government health spending.

16. Held Vladimir Putin accountable for his invasion of Ukraine by imposing stiff economic sanctions.

17. Boosted the budget of the Internal Revenue Service by nearly $80 billion to reduce tax evasion and increase revenue.

18. Created more jobs in one year (6.6 million) than any other president in U.S. history.

19. Reduced healthcare premiums under the Affordable Care Act by $800 a year as part of the American Rescue Plan.

20. Signed the PACT Act to address service members’ exposure to burn pits and other toxins.

21. Signed the CHIPS and Science Act to strengthen American manufacturing and innovation.

22. Reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act through 2027.

23. Halted all federal executions after the previous administration reinstated them after a 17-year freeze.

Boss switches company to a four-day workweek with no pay cut and productivity stayed the same

There are a lot of great benefits to companies adopting the four-day workweek. Studies show it can help employees, the bottom line and the environment. That’s why companies across the globe have been flirting with the idea to see if they can pull it off without jeopardizing productivity.

One of the most significant benefits of switching to the four-day workweek is that it increases the availability of talent because more people want to work for companies that give them a 72-hour weekend.

Companies with four-day workweeks often don’t see a loss in productivity because there is a tipping point where as employees work more hours, their productivity decreases because they suffer from burnout.

Finally, if four-day workweeks are widely adopted it would be great for combating climate change. A report by the University of Massachusetts Amherst found that a 10% reduction in work hours could result in “drops in ecological footprint, carbon footprint and carbon dioxide emissions by 12.1%, 14.6% and 4.2%, respectively.”

In 2018, businessman and founder of New Zealand trust company Perpetual Guardian Andrew Barnes created 4 Day Work Global, a nonprofit organization that studied the effects of taking an extra day off each week.

“We recognized well before the pandemic that the five-day week is no longer fit for purpose, and as we trialed and studied the four-day week it became clear that this is a necessary part of the solution to restore climate balance, among many other documented benefits,” Barnes told 7 News.

The results of 4 Day Work Global’s first trial were overwhelmingly positive. Forty-six percent of companies said productivity was the same, 34% reported a slight improvement and 15% said it was “significantly” better. Overall, 88% of companies said they are likely to continue the four-day workweek after the end of the trial.

Intrigued by 4 Day Work Global’s findings, Denis Moriarty, founder of Our Community, an Australian social enterprise, switched his company to a four-day workweek in August and he’s over the moon with the results.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, his staff is happier and still 100% productive.

“They’re loving it. They’ve got their lives back,” he told Daily Mail. “It’s been good for the workplace, good for employees and the company. There is no way we will go back to five days.”

What’s interesting about the experiment is that the employees are paid the same amount to work 20% fewer hours and are just as productive. The company was able to accommodate the same work in less time by shortening its meetings and because the employees are better rested. Some companies that have switched to the four-day workweek have added more hours to the average day to even things out, but Moriarty won’t be doing that any time soon.

“I don’t think you should be calling it a 4-day workweek if you cram more hours in those four days,” he said.

The five-day workweek has been the standard for most workers for around 100 years. Over that time, the work we do has changed drastically. So, isn’t it about time that we reevaluate our work habits as well?

This horse can’t stop running away to visit his friends at a dementia unit

Panda the horse cannot seem to stay out of trouble, or the nearby dementia unit.

Maija Vance, the owner of this mischievous palomino, posted a hilarious video to TikTok showing her riding Panda back home—presumably after being caught on the loose yet again.

“How many times has my horse got loose and run into the dementia unit in town and I had to ride him home…” the onscreen text reads. As Vance’s disapproving face appears, viewers get the answer from the video’s background song: two times.

Panda’s adorable antics garnered some lighthearted attention online. The comments section was filled with funny responses. A few joked that no one would believe the poor residents when they tried to tell the tale of a majestic horse galloping by. Another quipped, “He really wants to be a therapy pony…let him follow his dreams!”

In a follow-up video, Vance revealed that Panda’s motivation might be more food-oriented than anything else.

“This is 100% my fault,” the onscreen text reads as Vance tries to wrangle Panda. “I took him to the dementia unit to visit the patients. They loved him and gave him carrots. Now he tries to find ways to get loose and run into town and ends up back there.”

@maija.vance Replying to @mercury.n.the.snail #therapyhorse #horses #palominopaint ♬ original sound – MAIJA

The best part is seeing Panda’s reaction to all this. Clearly he doesn’t see what all the fuss is about.

Horses do have an astonishingly keen memory. Numerous studies have shown they recall people and places with pinpointed specificity.

“Talk about ‘never forgetting’ 😂😂 he only forgets what woah means but not where he got carrots,” one person quipped.

Where it might be true that Panda’s actions were solely fueled by snacks, his recognition prowess is certainly applaudable. And people considered it a sweet moment, as chaotic as it was.

“As someone who works in a nursing home I can guarantee you the residents love it whenever they catch a glimpse and he is the talk of the town. Also personally my job satisfaction would be a lot higher if I had a random horse that occasionally appeared,” one person commented.

If you want to see even more of Panda’s shenanigans, you can follow him and his brother, Slim Shady, on TikTok and Instagram. Who knows what trouble they’ll get into next to score a good carrot?

Samantha Bee Fans Are Already Rooting For Her To Host ‘The Daily Show’ After Trevor Noah’s Exit

Earlier this year, it was announced that Full Frontal With Samantha Bee would not be returning to TBS. This left Samantha Bee, the world’s only good late-night host (and one-time Jeopardy! hopeful) without anywhere to display her various political roasts and witty commentary.

Then this week, it was announced that Trevor Noah would be leaving The Daily Show after seven years. The announcement came soon after photos of Noah on an alleged date with pop star Dua Lipa hit the internet, though those two are probably unrelated, right? (Just having some fun!) Either way, there is now a vacant seat at the Daily Show desk, and some fans think that it’s time for a woman to take it.

Bee spent 12 years on The Daily Show before heading over to her own show on TBS in 2016. She was the first woman to host her own late-night satire show, so bringing her back to host The Daily Show would bring everything full circle! Many Twitter users seemed to agree that it’s time for Bee to step in for Noah.

In the past, Bee has been open about not seeing eye to eye with Comedy Central after Jon Stewart left the show, so maybe they’ll listen up and decide to have a woman as host.
