Earlier this summer, celebrity couple Halle Bailey and DDG took turns gushing about their relationship. After DDG told DJ Akademiks that the actress-singer “inspires him,” Halle admitted that she’s in love with the rapper from Pontiac, Michigan. DDG even put Halle in his “If I Want You” video, cemented their partnership in the public eye. It seems like they are both really benefitting from it — and in a recent interview, DDG revealed just how much he’s learning from being with the rising star.

Appearing on the Bootleg Kev Podcast, DDG talked about the backlash to Halle’s casting in the live-action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid and how it taught him that society isn’t quite as evolved as he believed. “I didn’t know people was this racist – I didn’t know this was a thing,” he says, admitting to being blown away by the racist #NotMyAriel comments that proliferated in the wake of the film’s teaser trailer debuting Halle as the titular character. “I thought this sh*t was gone already, I thought that sh*t was gone! I thought Martin Luther King [Jr.] canceled that sh*t out! This sh*t is crazy, I was like ‘what the f*ck is these n****s talking about?’”

He also deflects some of the criticism away from his girlfriend, saying, “She be laughing it off [but] they be going a little too hard. But I feel like the people is more attacking the character rather than her, personally.” However, in his estimation, all this negative attention won’t stop the film from being a success; “It’s going number one, regardless!” he predicts.

For what it’s worth, fans of the casting have been sharing videos of their children’s reactions to the teaser and it looks like the target audience — you know, children — are all in, even, yes, the redheads, who already had the original animated version to watch for the past 30 years.

Canadian actor Ryan Grantham has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his mother during the early days of the pandemic. The 23-year-old actor who has also appeared in The CW’s Riverdale and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie reportedly committed the act as part of a larger murder spree that was to include the assassination of Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau as well as a school shooting.

Ultimately, Grantham never took his plan any further than the murder of his mother and turned himself to authorities. Via The New York Times:

The crime occurred on March 31, 2020, when Grantham, then 21, shot his mother, Barbara Waite, in the back of her head as she played piano in their home in Squamish, a town in British Columbia about 37 miles south of Whistler, Johnson said. Grantham recorded a video shortly after that in which he confessed to the murder and then left by car, Johnson said. Grantham told the authorities that he initially had planned to kill the prime minister, but changed his mind and at some point decided he would carry out a mass shooting, possibly at Simon Fraser University, where he had been a student.

During his sentencing hearing, Grantham’s lawyer argued that his client has a documented history of mental illness and has “committed himself to trying to rehabilitate himself.” Despite the life sentence, Grantham will be eligible for parole in 14 years. Prosecutors had asked for 18 years while Grantham’s attorney argued for 12. The judge split the difference.

Following the news of his Latin Grammy Award nomination this week, Pol Granch dropped his new single “Nena” today (September 23). The Spanish singer-songwriter also announced the release date for his upcoming album Amor Escupido.

Pol Granch received his breakthrough moment last year as part of fellow Spanish singer’s Marc Seguí hit “Tiroteo.” When Puerto Rican superstar Rauw Alejandro jumped on the remix, their collaboration skyrocketed in popularity. The remix has amassed over 381 million streams on Spotify. Granch also received an international boost when he started appearing in the hit Netflix series Elite last year.

This past week, Granch’s name was further boosted when he was announced as one of the Latin Grammy’s nominees for Best New Artist. On the heels of that news, he released his new single “Nena.” The guitar-driven love song reflects the alternative route Granch has taken in his recent singles like “No Te Bastó, Mi Corazón” and “Kriño.” He also has roots in France and it shows in his accent as he sweetly serenades his lover in a heartfelt performance.

Granch also revealed the cover art and the release date for his album Amor Escupido. The LP will be released on October 28. All the aforementioned tracks, including “Nena,” will appear on the album. The collaborations include “Platicamos” with Mexican singer Leon Leiden and “Desconexión” with Spanish EDM act Garabatto.

Norman Reedus is taking his iconic Walking Dead character Daryl over to Europe this fall for a new spinoff after the long-running show comes to an end after eleven years on the air. It was announced in 2020 that Reedus and Melissa McBride would get their own show in The Walking Dead universe, though McBride exited the series shortly after due to the fact that the production would take place in Europe.

Fans were upset about the upcoming unnamed series, though Reedus stayed cryptic about the show. When asked about how the spinoff will work without McBride, Reedus carefully responded, “How do you know she’s not gonna come back?”

Even though he won’t give any direct answers, Reedus confirms that the timing of the series had a lot to do with McBride exiting the project.

“The spinoff was announced before we even announced The Walking Dead was ending. We always thought we were doing a show that would come back to the flagship show — we’d take off, then come back to the flagship show. Then they ended the flagship show, and it was us on our own. And then we shot for a year and a half straight, through the beginning of COVID.At that point, Melissa wasn’t going to do the show. And then she was going to do show. And then she wasn’t going to do the show. And then she needed a break and I went on TV and said she needs a break.”

McBride exited the show earlier this year, and Reedus defended her against the harsh backlash. “But you don’t know she’s not going to show up on the spinoff,” he added. “She’s a very big part of Daryl’s story. It’s all gonna be OK.”

Still, fans have many questions when it comes to the upcoming show. What will it be called? Is Daryl going to die after all? And how on EARTH did he get to Europe?! The world may never know.

The final eight episodes of The Walking Dead premiere on October 2nd.

There is a lot of early-to-mid 2000s CGI that did not age well. There are the wolves in Twilight: New Moon, the baby in Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part—honestly, anything in any of the Twilight movies will do. Of course, CGI has aged well in some movies, but James Cameron was a little nervous about seeing Avatar back on the big screen.

Avatar might have come out in 2009, but the upcoming installment will hit theaters this December, over a decade after the first movie was released. Cameron recently told EW that he was unsure of how it would compare to the new movie. “I went into that screening worried that it was going to be a bit cringe-worthy relative to the new film, which looks pretty spectacular,” Cameron said after seeing the film again in theaters.

House of the Dragon may still be ruling our appointment viewing in October, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t more shows and movies worth checking out on HBO and HBO Max this month.

For instance, Mike White’s doomed resort comedy, The White Lotus, returns for a new vacation with the same old kind of problems (and problematic people) while Avenue 5 takes us back into space for a comedy of errors.

The White Lotus: Season 2 (HBO original premieres 10/30)

Mike White’s dark comedy about a group of privileged tourists running amuck at a Hawaiin resort left audiences wanting more when its limited run came to an end last year. So, naturally, HBO has turned it into a sort of anthology series, giving us a second season set in in Sicily, Italy, following new guests and resort employees. Although they have brought Jennifer Coolidge back, thank god.

Avenue 5: Season 2 (HBO original premieres 10/10)

This Hugh Laurie-led space comedy returns for more anti-gravity adventures. After failing to course correct last season, Laurie’s space captain must quell growing unease aboard his ship as passengers discover their eight-week cruise has turned into an eight-year voyage and their food supply might not last that long.

“Words And Guitar” is one of the loudest, most raucous, yet incredibly melodic tunes in the Sleater-Kinney discography. It takes a special talent to cover it with the vigor that can stand up to Corin Tucker’s screeching staccato, Carrie Brownstein’s lead riff and retro backing vocals, and Janet Weiss’ thunder and lightning beat. Courtney Barnett — who recently featured Sleater-Kinney on her compilation album — is an ace level choice to take on “Words And Guitar,” but in her new cover version of the 1997 tune, she’s damn near flipped it on its head.

Barnett’s cover of “Words And Guitar” is part of Sleater-Kinney’s newly-announced Dig Me In: A Dig Me Out Cover Album that celebrates the 25th anniversary of their iconic third album, which also happens to be their best-selling release of all-time. Due out on October 21st and also serving as a benefit for Portland’s LGBTQIA+ youth center, SMYRC, the album features covers by St. Vincent, Wilco, Jason Isbell, and more in addition to Barnett.

If Barnett’s version sounds quite a bit different from the original, there’s a reason for that: “The artists who appear on Dig Me In have not so much covered the 13 original songs, but reinterpreted and reimagined them,” Sleater-Kinney said in a statement. “Through added layers or the subtraction of guitars and drums, they provide a new way into the songs. Fresh rage, joy, pain, reclamation, slyness, and longing. Other interpretations slow down or stretch out the songs, trading urgency for contemplation, weariness or even a hint of ease.”

House of the Dragon is serious. It is an HBO drama, holding the coveted Sunday night 9pm eastern slot. The cast includes some of Britain’s best thespians who didn’t appear on Game of Thrones. The show also includes battles and dragons, dragons more intricately designed and meticulously detailed than the three dragons we saw on Game of Thrones. Because of the dragons and a lot of other things, House of the Dragon costs a serious amount of money.

So far, the first season of the series has boomeranged between serious fantasy family drama and absolute chaos. In the fifth episode, “We Light the Way,” which adds to the canon of Westeros Weddings Gone Wrong, it embraces the melodrama and the chaos and fully transforms into a very expensive soap opera.

House of the Dragon gleefully accepts its melodramatic core during a feast to kick off Princess Rhaenyra’s wedding to Laenor Velaryon. The scene starts off normally – normal for a wedding feast in Westeros, at least. The royal family, minus the missing queen, sit at a table while lords of Westeros who wish they were the ones marrying Rhaenyra suck up to her and congratulate her.

In the midst of this, Daemon Targaryen, who is not exactly on good terms with anyone in the room as a result of his kinky night on the town with his niece in episode four, arrives at the feast late and uninvited. King Viserys’ speech is interrupted by the late arrival of his wife, Queen Alicent Hightower. Daemon is accused of murdering his wife. Rhaenyra and Daemon have a tense conversation on the dance floor but also maybe make out. Rhaenyra’s paramour Criston Cole gets into a fight with her future husband’s paramour, killing him. And all along, King Viserys is secretly suffering from his ongoing health problems and just trying to eat in peace.

Rather than one shocking wedding event like the massacre of the Starks at the Red Wedding or the poisoning of King Joffrey at the Purple Wedding, this wedding is drama after drama with no breathing room for the characters or the audience. The episode combines the awkward family drama and love triangles reminiscent of a teen soap like Gossip Girl (the original) with the uncomfortable, nonstop anxious energy of Uncut Gems. Or, really, any Safdie Brothers film.

Comparing House of the Dragon to a campy soap might sound like an insult, but this is the best possible outcome for the Game of Thrones spin-off. Rather than making things complicated, the series is absorbing itself in melodramatic chaos and as a result, makes Westeros fun. Essentially, House of the Dragon is a Game of Thrones show for people who want to understand what they’re watching but don’t have the energy to inadvertently peruse the A Song of Ice and Fire Wikipedia until 2 am trying to figure out who everyone is, where everyone is, and who is related to whom.

The series could have gone the self-serious route – it has already and it likely will again – but having the audacity so early in the series to have some fun and be a little dumb already makes it more subversive than its subversion-obsessed predecessor.

What a year it’s been for the Jackass boys (and Rachel Wolfson).

Jackass Forever was the second best theatrical experience of the year after Top Gun: Maverick; director Jeff Tremaine is working on a documentary about 30 years of “wrongdoing and debauchery” at Walt Disney World; and to cap things off, most of the crew — minus Steve-O — reunited on the Celebrity Family Feud season finale.

In one corner, you had Team Tremaine: Jeff Tremaine, Chris Pontius, Wee Man (who Harvey affectionally referred to as “my man”), Compston “Dark Shark” Wilson, Eric “Butterbean” Esch, and Zach Holmes. In the other, Team Knoxville: Johnny Knoxville, Danger Ehren, Preston Lacy, Jasper Dolphin, Dave England, and Rachel Wolfson. It was chaos. Beautiful, beautiful chaos.

Knoxville, wearing the same suit as the immaculately-dressed host, tasered his own teammates; England grossed the audience out by replying to “tell me something you’d hate to have happen while you’re making love in an airplane bathroom” with “you accidentally went number two in the wrong direction” (it’s a good answer); and Harvey, who was equal parts delighted and confused, made this face at the end of the episode.

I won’t spoil who won the game, but in a way, we’re all winners.

Bob Dylan’s The Philosophy Of Modern Song is set to be an audiobook, with the superstar lineup of readers just getting confirmed by Variety. Actors including Steve Buscemi and Helen Mirren will be among the famous voices reading on Dylan’s upcoming essay collection. Other notable stars reading will be Oscar Isaac, Sissy Spacek, Rita Moreno, John Goodman, Jeff Bridges, Renée Zellweger, Alfre Woodard, and Jeffrey Wright.

Dylan’s book is being released on November 1.
