On Friday, Splatoon 3 was released by Nintendo and the reaction to it has been expected from an IP that is receiving its third game in seven years: People ate it up. It helps that the game is extremely fun to play, more people own Switches than ever before, and it’s a very different kind of game compared to your average shooter.
What was not expected was just how quickly people went out to make sure they could be in on the release of Splatoon 3. While it’s a safe bet that it’s doing well in the United States, in Japan Nintendo announced that Splatoon 3 is the fastest-selling Switch game ever after selling 3.45 million units in only three days. Those are bonkers numbers and we know that because it’s not common for video game companies to release a press release saying the actual numbers sold unless it’s going to impress people.
Nintendo Co., Ltd. (HQ: Kyoto, Minami-ku, Japan; Representative Director and President: Shuntaro Furukawa) announced that domestic sales of the Splatoon 3 game for the Nintendo Switch system have surpassed 3.45 million units* in the first three days since its launch on September 9, 2022. This is the highest domestic sales level for any Nintendo Switch software within the first three days.
With the game doing so well in Japan we can only assume that it’s also doing well over in the States. If you haven’t yet, consider picking up Splatoon 3 yourself because it’s one of the more unique games out there. The objective of most matches isn’t to get the most eliminations, or capture a flag, but instead paint the entire map as much of your own color as possible. This hook has created the perfect blend of hardcore shooter fans and people that dislike anything forcing them to aim, because just about anyone can be good at Splatoon. The result is a game that everyone is loving and Nintendo is reaping the rewards.
Donald Trump is a man of contradictions: He lives most of his life in the public eye, but he does his best to keep certain things — especially his shadier doings — private. There’s a whole House committee dedicated to unpacking all the business he tried to keep hidden concerning the Jan. 6 riot. So when the former president suddenly showed up in D.C. over the weekend, the move prompted wild speculation? Why was he back in his old stomping grounds? Does it have to do with the Mar-a-Lago raid? Is he just there on “business,” as he’s claimed? And what’s up with this weird video of him having some shady-looking meeting on his D.C. golf course?
Former Pres. Trump at his Virginia golf property today but not appearing to play as he moved about with a large group. This video was shot at considerable distance. pic.twitter.com/AVwjl32kWp
On Monday, NBC News White House correspondent Kelly O’Donnell posted said video, with the following caption: “Former Pres. Trump at his Virginia golf property today but not appearing to play as he moved about with a large group. This video was shot at considerable distance.”
What could he be doing? Having some clandestine meeting with cronies away from anything that could record what they were saying? Or was it just some boring meeting about the golf course he owns? You can’t tell with the guy who used to clog toilets by shoving illegally torn-up White House down them.
Whatever the case — underhanded business or boring, mundane nothingburger — it got people feeling suspicious.
Don’t see the problem here, just your standard Monday clubless ninesome. https://t.co/XMyN1rUb1F
Rushed, covert midnight flight, no warning, secure property – secluded from cameras, secret service, & press… mandated athletic apparel makes it near impossible to hide a wire, never once plays golf – but exchanging of “golf bags”
And there were some who said the truth is probably incredibly boring.
seeing lots of silly conspiracy theories about this and I’m sorry to tell you the real purpose is a very boring and routine gravesite scouting visit https://t.co/wfg0ZIyaei
Earlier this year, ESPN announced that former NFL Pro Bowl quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III would be joining the regular cast of Monday Night Countdown in advance of the network’s showcase broadcast each week. Griffin III, who is also a college football analyst for the network, was only one of the additions to the Monday night lineup, with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman famously coming on board to anchor the game broadcast from the booth. Before the Week 1 clash between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks, Griffin III wasted no time leaving his imprint on the proceedings, but perhaps not in the way you might expect for a typical pregame analyst.
Instead, ESPN arranged a race between Griffin III and an actual seahawk that was narrated by fellow analyst Booger McFarland.
First of all, this is riveting television and it is captured well by the ESPN cameras. Griffin III can still run, which probably helps the aesthetic, and Booger is highly amusing in his running commentary. By the end, Griffin III even manages to get in a joke about playing for the Cowboys after the unfortunate injury to Dak Prescott, and the clip really has everything.
Monday Night Countdown probably can’t replicate this every week, but it was a good segment. As Awful Announcing notes in the video above, perhaps pregame shows aren’t all bad.
Those of us who thought that announcement season in video games was over are being proven to have been very wrong. We usually spend this part of the year talking about the latest big releases, such as Madden and NBA 2K, or what we have on the way for the upcoming holiday season. However, it appears the games industry is not finished showing us their cards.
On Monday, both PlayStation and Nintendo announced that they will have showcase events to announce new titles and tease some upcoming ones for the winter as well. Not only that, but both events will be on Tuesday. So get ready gaming fans cause it looks like we’re going to randomly get a flurry of announcements thrown our way tomorrow.
Tune in at 7 a.m. PT tomorrow, 9/13, for a #NintendoDirect livestream featuring roughly 40 minutes of information mostly focused on #NintendoSwitch games launching this winter.
Thankfully, one event is going to be happening relatively early in the day while the other one will be taking place later in the afternoon giving us a little bit of breathing room before the announcements. That’s great news for those of us that need that break between to decompress after everything we’re likely going to see across the two showcases.
State of Play returns tomorrow, September 13. Watch live to see new reveals and updates for PS5, PS4, and PS VR2.
A big day indeed PlayStation! We’re very curious to see what some of these upcoming games could be. We at least have an idea from Nintendo, since their big focus is going to be winter games, but PlayStation really could be anything.
Rapper PNB Rock was reportedly shot this afternoon at Roscoe’s Chicken And Waffles in Los Angeles, according to TMZ. The rapper was dining with his girlfriend at the eatery’s Inglewood location, the latter of who had posted an image of their meal on her Instagram story.
At the time of writing, no information has been released about the shooter, however, it appears the shooter was targeting PNB Rock, as a witness to the incident said the shooter removed jewelry from PNB, then fled.
A graphic video of PNB was shared to social media, in which he is still seen moving after having been shot. He was reportedly transported to a hospital immediately after the shooting. The image shared by PNB’s girlfriend of the food at Roscoe’s has since been removed from her stories.
PNB Rock is said to be in critical condition.
Rock is known for songs like “Selfish,” “Gang Up” with Young Thug, 2 Chainz and Wiz Khalifa, and “Horses” with Kodak Black and A Boogie wit da Hoodie. Earlier this month, PNB Rock released a single called “Luv Me Again,” his first since leaving Atlantic Records and going independent.
Uproxx has reached out to PNB Rock’s team and Los Angeles Police Department.
Coming into this season, aside from Lamar Jackson’s contract situation, the biggest question facing the Ravens offense was at the wide receiver position where they lacked a clear No. 1 option. After trading Hollywood Brown to Arizona, the Baltimore receiving corps featured Rashod Bateman, Devin Duvernay, and James Proche II as its top-3, which isn’t exactly a group full of household names.
As such, Jackson’s longtime favorite target, tight end Mark Andrews, was a top name in fantasy football for many as he was expected to gobble up targets all season, but the rest of the receiving corps was a big question mark both on the field and from a fantasy perspective. In Week 1, Andrews led the team with five catches, but both Bateman and Duvernay were on the receiving end of Lamar Jackson touchdowns, with Duvernay hauling in four catches for 54 yards and a pair of TDs.
Duvernay was not a popular fantasy choice, as he was on just 2 percent of rosters and was started in 0 percent of lineups on CBS Sports in Week 1, but racked up 17 fantasy points with his big day. Among the two percent who drafted Duvernay was Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell, but as he told an assistant on the sidelines, he, like everyone else, left Duvernay on the bench and was kicking himself watching the young receiver go off.
It’s pretty funny watching an NFL player lament his fantasy lineup on the sideline during a game and makes Campbell extremely relatable to every fantasy player, as there’s nothing more frustrating than watching a guy go off on your bench. The good news for Campbell is that he gets to reap the rewards of the Ravens win personally, unlike most fantasy owners, and, as he notes, he won’t have to fight for his teammate on the waiver wire. The bad news is the Ravens don’t get to play the Jets again this season, and Duvernay has to deal with a stingier Miami group next week.
In the world of online foodie discourse — which is a bigger thing than you’re probably giving it credit for, see: random restaurants trending nearly every day — giant chain restaurants don’t have a lot of advocates. No one is really that eager to talk about the finer aspects of Chili’s menu, rave about how good the cheddar biscuits from Red Lobster are, or highlight which IHOP pancakes slap — unless of course, you come out swinging. Then you’re going to have a lot of sudden defenders blowing up your notifications.
That’s undoubtedly what happened to Twitter user Alex C (@anothercohen) after he openly criticized Chili’s, Applebees, Olive Garden, and Red Lobster over the weekend in a tweet that has since earned over 4k replies, 8k retweets, and 14K likes and is still growing (Red Lobster is currently trending at number 3 in the US right now).
I don’t understand how the following restaurants are still in business: – Chilis – Applebees – Olive Garden – Red Lobster
Alex C openly wondered how the four national chains were still in business which essentially, in his own words, “triggered all of suburban America” as thousands of online foodies came to the defense of these American staples. Despite all the hate, Alex seems to be standing by his original assessment, and we can respect the bravery — even though his take on Olive Garden’s salad is straight-up wrong.
Doubling down on the opinion that the food is bad at all of these restaurants (exception being the breadsticks and salad at Olive Garden)
Olive Garden’s salad is probably the worst salad you could ever find at a restaurant, and you can blow up my Twitter notifications if you think otherwise. As derided as these big chains generally are, for many a suburban kid growing up in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, a lot of these restaurants exemplified the height of luxury dining (not hard when you compare it to McDonald’s) and introduced us to a larger world of flavors that opened up our relatively sheltered palates, so we understand the fondness a lot of people have for them.
Check out some of the best takes in this raging debate below.
This mentality is so alien to me as a person who grew up rural & working class. When I was a kid, restaurants like Olive Garden and Red Lobster were the expensive places we’d drive by on the way to Walmart or the diner. When my grandma took me to Bertucci’s, I felt like royalty. https://t.co/VFiFBMavVC
I just watched an episode where Anthony Bourdain went to a Sizzler with a friend. He was very respectful despite having had the best food from all over the globe. If he can be respectful about what his friend enjoys, so can everyone else
Because people like the food at those places, and not everyone wants to try or has easy access to “different” foods? Not sure how that is hurting you or anyone else, or why you even care.
They offer a sit-down restaurant at almost fast food-level prices. They allow families to go out to eat inexpensively. I don’t see what the mystery is here. Have you ever visited a single suburb or small town?
These restaurants are a good way for working class people to feel like they can take their families out to a more upscale dining experience that’s affordable
this is engagement bait and it clearly worked for you, so congrats. but to most of the working class, these are the only options and to some these are even nice restaurants
I’m from Oklahoma and I live in SF now but I don’t look down on where I’m from
— pfireBaby I Could Never Steal You From Another (@firefire100) September 11, 2022
I worked at Applebees, literally everything is microwaved. The smell driving by a Res Lobster makes me gag, I don’t know how anyone could eat frozen then thawed seafood. Olive Garden is McDonald’s for Italian food. Go anywhere else for better food.
that’s cause you’re rich. I live in sf and occasionally take my kid to Olive Garden bc it’s 1. cheap, 2. extremely fun for kids, and 3. unpretentious and super family-friendly. Hard trifecta to find in “tasteful” urban American establishments.
Some people may not know this but that’s why I’m here, Red Lobster has one of the best cheeseburgers out there right now- and vanilla bean cheesecake too. Thank me later.
Keeping up with new music can be exhausting, even impossible. From the weekly album releases to standalone singles dropping on a daily basis, the amount of music is so vast it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Even following along with the Uproxx recommendations on a daily basis can be a lot to ask, so every Monday we’re offering up this rundown of the best new music this week.
This week saw Ari Lennox come through with her long-awaited sophomore effort and Nav do Canadian hip-hop proud with a new LP. Yeah, it was a great week for new music. Check out the highlights below.
Lennox dropped her new album Age/Sex/Location last week and perhaps nobody was more excited about it than was J. Cole. Lennox’s labelmate went out of his way to publicly praise the album on multiple occasions, and he also offered some backing vocals on “POF.”
Nav and Don Toliver — “Flawless” Feat. Future
Nav’s new album Demons Protected By Angels is full of collabs, like ones with Lil Baby, Lil Durk, Lil Uzi Vert, RealestK, and Travis Scott (but not Drake). Now that the album’s out, so too is “Flawless,” a dreamy link-up with Don Toliver and Future
Willow — “Curious/Furious”
Despite initial pusback, Willow been fully invested in the rock space for a few years now and she’s thriving. Another fine example of that is last week’s “Curious/Furious,” which actually has some shades of her R&B beginnings if you listen closely enough.
Nicki Minaj — “Super Freaky Girl (Queen Mix)”
It’s been a minute since an all-female hip-hop posse cut but Nicki Minaj came through last week with the “Queen Mix” of “Super Freaky Girl.” She packed a lot of rappers into a four-minute tune, as it features Bia, JT, Katie Got Bandz, Akbar V and Maliibu Miitch.
Leray blessed the first half of 2022 with her debut album, Trendsetter, and now she’s back with more new material, a song called “Fly Sh*t.” The track shows off Leray’s versatility, as Uproxx’s Armon Sadler notes, “The multi-talent weaves in and out of rapping and singing over the flute-laced, mid-tempo beat.”
Cordae and Hit-Boy — “Checkmate”
The Madden 23 soundtrack is full of new music, with a couple new songs debuting on the game after launch. One of those is a new one from Cordae and Hit-Boy, “Checkmate,” of which Uproxx’s Armon Sadler notes, “Hit-Boy laces him with thumping drums and powerful synths, and Cordae takes the hand-off all the way to the end zone, blending introspection and confidence.”
Rosalía — “La Kilié”
Last week brought Motomami +, a deluxe edition of Rosalía latest album that most notably adds four new songs. Of those, “La Kilié” is a standout, a quick hit with a nearly arrhythmic beat that engagingly pushes things forward while Rosalía idiosyncratic vocals are as captivating as ever.
Blood Orange — “Jesus Freak Lighter”
While Dev Hynes tends to keep busy, his last new song as Blood Orange actually came back in 2019. That was true until last week, when he dropped “Jesus Freak Lighter,” which Uproxx’s Danielle Chelosky dubbed “an oasis, a warm, safe spot detached from reality.” There’s more where this came from, too, as the track appears on Four Songs, an EP set to drop this week.
YG — “Alone”
I Got Issues, the latest YG album, is on the way later this month and he previewed it last week with the vulnerable single “Alone.” Uproxx’s Aaron Williams notes of the song’s introspective lyrical content, “YG takes stock of how his gangster habits — formed by the trauma of growing up in Compton — interfere with his current lifestyle. He’s got money, status, and safety now; he’s got to leave the streets alone.”
Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
Audiences and critics alike have raved over the ABC mockumentary comedy “Abbott Elementary” for being an honest, heartfelt and humorous love letter to teachers. The show recently racked up seven Emmy Award nominations, including Sheryl Lee Ralph for “Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series.”
Ralph has graced a long list of movies, TV shows and broadway musicals—including “A Piece of the Action”, “Moesha” and “Dreamgirls”—but this marks her first Emmy nomination in more than 50 years as an entertainer. Back in July 2022, her son posted a video to Twitter of the actress receiving the good news. Her joy is infectious.
with over 50 years of being in this thing we call showbusiness, today my mother became an Emmy nominated actress. i’m so proud of @thesherylralph. I’m so glad I could be here in Jamaica with you for this moment. (excuse the mess in the video, we’re remodeling our bathroom lol) pic.twitter.com/kzQBepvPHH — Your Friend’s Friend (@walkgoodetienne) July 12, 2022
Ralph, who plays the no-nonsense kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard, had her own love letter written out following her nomination. The thank-you note, read aloud by Ralph for “Good Morning America,” was addressed to her late father Dr. Stanley Ralph, who also happened to be an educator.
“Dear Dad,” Ralph began, reading with childlike enthusiasm. “I just want to thank you for being my best and favorite teacher ever!”
She continued “I thank you for reminding me that there is NOTHING wrong and DEFINITELY something GREAT about being a lifelong learner. Just like you. And I want to thank you for always reminding me about that five letter word T-H-I-N-K. Thinking never hurt anybody. In fact, think more.”
She concluded, “I know you were a great teacher to so so many, but you were my BEST. Thank you.”
The huge success of “Abbott Elementary” is due in part to its sincere portrayal of a day in the life of teachers—managing to shine a light on the very real challenges teachers face while still managing to inspire laughter. Show creator Quinta Brunson even named the fictional public school after her own sixth grade teacher, with whom she got to share a sweet surprise exchange on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
Whether or not Ralph (or “Abbott Elementary”) ultimately wins the award, the work itself is winning hearts for illustrating the huge impact that teachers can make. That’s a pretty sweet victory.
On Friday, breakout Memphis rapper GloRilla released the remix of her viral hit “FNF (Let’s Go),” which has been rampaging all over playlists and DJ sets all summer. However, someone forgot to give the updated version of the single to a Texas DJ over the weekend, resulting in a case of mistaken identity that annoyed of the track’s guest rappers into a frustrated Twitter tirade.
GloRilla originally billed Saweetie on her breakout hit but instead included JT and Latto on the final version. However, the DJ apparently played a leaked version, not the one that was sent to DSPs, prompting JT to lash out, attributing the error to an intentional effort to shade her. “This DJ in Texas at KAMP intentionally played Saweetie verse & keep saying JT boy if you don’t get your delusional bitch ass on,” she tweeted. “Y’all n****s in this industry catty & weird.”
“I’m tired of being humble & nice,” she continued in a later tweet. “y’all pussy ass f*ck ass hoe ass ghost writer ass wish y’all had a Pussy ass pick me ass N****s better find a TOY!!!!!!! Don’t play in my face don’t cause I’m with it I’m with whatever.”
And while this may seem like a big reaction to a size one problem (a quote from City Girls’ Issa Rae-produced HBO show Rap Sh!t), she does have a point. Even if it was just a mistake, any professional DJ worth their Serato should be able to correctly identify which female rapper is which, no matter their personal musical taste (with Serato, there’s actually no excuse, since everything is done on a screen rather than having to cart around and catalog crates full of records).
However, because fans are always looking for any sign of drama and beef between the women in rap (legacy of rap media pitting them against each other throughout the ’90s and 2000s), JT made sure to insist she had no issue with Saweetie. “She’s not on the song DONT PLAY IN MY FACE!” she wrote. “I love her, she’s nice! But it’s messy & uncalled for. This industry designed to play women, these n****s don’t go through none of this.”
JT later deleted all the tweets, instead choosing to focus on her other guest appearance from NMF on Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl” remix — although that song is generating a fair amount of drama as well.
