‘SNL’ Adds Four New Castmembers To Replace… All The People Who Left Between Seasons

Now that the crew at 30 rock has said goodbye to Pete Davidson as he heads off to make a movie about GameStop, some new players have been added to the mix.

At the end of last season, fans said goodbye to long-time castmembers like Davidson, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, and Kyle Mooney which left the burning question: who is going to be…the funny one? Just kidding! Obviously, because Bowen Yang and NBC King Keenan Thompson are both still around.

Then, earlier this month, it was announced that three more stars, Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor, and Aristotle Athari, would also be saying goodbye to Mr. Lorne Michaels. So, with eight spots to fill, who is up next?

This season, there are four new additions that will make their debut on October 1st. Up first is Marcello Hernandez, a Miami-based writer and actor who was selected for the Just For Laughs showcase earlier this year. Joining Hernandez is Cleavland native Molly Kearney, who uses they/them pronouns, from Amazon’s A League Of The Own and Disney’s The Mighty Ducks.

Micahel Longfellow is also joining the cast after being selected as one of TBS’s “Comics to Watch” at the 2017 New York Comedy Festival. Finally, hailing from Austin, Texas comes Devon Walker, who has written for Big Mouth and Everything’s Trash in the past.

RIP Chad. You will be missed. By someone, probably.

Some babies will turn into contortionists to avoid touching grass. Here’s why.

When you see a gymnast doing this, you know they’ve worked for years to train their muscles and perfect their gymnastics skills:

Martin Rulsch, Wikimedia Commons

But when you see a baby hovering in the air, legs in splits, you know there’s probably a big ol’ patch of grass beneath them.

Grass?!? you may be thinking. Seriously? Aren’t babies, the purest among us—unspoiled by the trappings of modern life and technology—naturally drawn to the earth?

Apparently not if that earth is covered in grass, nope. For them, the lawn is lava.

Babies—or at least a good portion of babies—will do pretty much anything to not let any part of their bodies touch grass. Viral videos have demonstrated this fact, with parents holding their wee ones over a patch of lawn and lowering them toward the ground.

The way these tiny tots will twist themselves into gymnast-like positions to keep some daylight between them and the lawn is both impressive and hilarious. Watch:

You would think these parents were holding their kids above a pot of boiling oil, not the cool, refreshing grass. So what’s happening here? Why are these babies so averse to touching grass?

According to neuropsychologist Dr. Sanam Hafeez, it could be an issue of sensory overload.

“Some babies lift their feet out in the air when a parent attempts to put them down on the grass because as a baby’s nervous system develops, sights, sensations, and sounds are intense,” Hafeez told Romper. “The ticklish, sharp blades of grass can catch a baby off guard, and some babies are often scared of it, as they are used to softer, more comfortable surfaces such as wood, tile, or carpet.”

Pediatrician Gina Posner, M.D offered Parents a similar explanation.

“The prickly texture and feel of grass is far different than softer and more comfortable feeling of carpet, tile, and wood surfaces on their feet, hands, and body, so babies are often scared of it.” Grass can also be itchy and cause rashes, she said, which can make babies more averse to it.

Another explanation may be more innate and evolutionary. In a 2014 study published in Cognition, researchers reported evidence that “human infants possess strategies that would serve to protect them from dangers posed by plants.”

“Across two experiments, infants as young as eight months exhibit greater reluctance to manually explore plants compared to other entities,” the researchers shared. So perhaps babies simply don’t trust grass.

According to another study published in 2019, there may be something to that distrust idea. Researchers found that babies between 8 and 18 months old “exhibited more social looking toward adults when confronted with plants compared to other object types.” The study authors pointed out that learning about which plants are beneficial and which ones are harmful is something humans can’t do alone, and noted that infants tended to look to older adults for social cues about plants they encounter before touching them.

“This social looking strategy puts infants in the best position to glean information from others before making contact with potentially dangerous plants,” researchers wrote.

So, we have a few options here. Is it possible that those babies in the video weren’t able to glean social cues from their caregivers that the grass was safe? Yes. Is it possible that they’d already touched grass once and found it too “tickly”? Yes. Is it possible that babies do all kinds of surprising, seemingly inexplicable things just to keep their parents guessing and always on their toes? Sure feels like it.

Whatever the reason, watching babies blatantly reject the “touch grass” advice the rest of us keep getting is hilarious. Who says the grown-ups know best? Trust your instincts and do you, babes.

Patagonia founder donates his entire company to help address climate change

Patagonia is a brand synonymous with integrity. Millions of people love not only its high-quality athletic wear, but also the way the company consistently puts its money behind its principles—whether through donating a $10 million tax cut to help the environment or providing on-site childcare and other supportive policies for employees who are also parents.

Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, continues to prioritize impact over profit, as he recently announced that he’ll be giving away his multimillion dollar company. Not selling it. Not making public. Donating it.

The decision, Chouinard wrote in a statement, was made in order to put more money into addressing climate change while keeping the company’s values intact. Selling wouldn’t guarantee maintenance of those values or ensure that employees would keep their jobs. And going public would have been, as Chouinard put it, a “disaster,” explaining that “even public companies with good intentions are under too much pressure to create short-term gain at the expense of long-term vitality and responsibility.”

With “no good options available … we created our own,” Chouinard wrote.

Going forward, as CNBC explains, the company’s stock will go from privately owned to being owned by the Patagonia Purpose Trust. This trust, overseen by members of the Chouinard family and a few advisors, will receive all of the voting stock—which is a small 2% of the total—as a “permanent legal structure” to protect the business’s purpose.

Meanwhile Holdfast Collective, a nonprofit dedicated to environmental causes, will own the nonvoting stock, amounting to 98%. In other words, all profits not reinvested back into Patagonia will go toward saving the planet.

“Earth is now our only shareholder,” the statement read.

The unconventional business move is nothing unusual for the rock-climber-turned-billionaire with an unwavering commitment to sustainability. In an exclusive interview with The New York Times, Chouinard shared his hope that the announcement will “influence a new form of capitalism.”

In a time when megawealthy business owners seem less likely to donate their shares for the good of humanity and more likely as a tax evasion tactic, this new form of capitalism sounds more attractive than ever. Not only attractive, but possible, as Patagonia has continuously proven that a business can thrive while still being responsible. Now it’s taking it a step further, truly making a better world more attainable.

There is often an unspoken, yet deeply ingrained belief that money—being the root of all evil and all—is what corrupts us. But perhaps it is instead the choices one makes with their power that determines their character. Wealth without consciousness is dangerous. The cost—like exploiting Earth’s finite resources—is great. Luckily purpose-driven leaders like Chouinard use their success to make the world a better place. Hopefully others will follow suit.

This is the best oops ever! Virginia man’s $600 lottery win turned out to be $1 million.

There’s something about playing the lottery that makes you feel like “this time I’m going to win,” though most people who play regularly rarely win more than a few dollars. It’s that hope for more that keeps people coming back. One man in Virginia was thrilled that he won $600 on a scratch-off lottery ticket, but he turned out to be even luckier than he thought. Jose Flores Velasquez went to collect his winnings only to be told there had been a misunderstanding. The lottery winner had actually won $1 million, not the $600 he came to collect.

Velasquez went to the Virginia Lottery customer service center in Prince William County where he was informed of his actual payout amount, according to NBC News. The chances of winning a top prize in 20X the Money’s lottery draw is 1 in 1,754,400 and Velasquez happened to be the second top prize winner. The prizes for that particular scratch-off can range from $10 to $1 million. Winning the lottery is already exciting, even when it’s just an extra $20, but imagine finding out you won hundreds of thousands more than you originally thought. That discovery might be grounds for tears of joy, especially in this economy.

People who win large sums of money in the lottery usually have an option to take a lump sum, one-time payment or have it disbursed over a certain number of years. Velasquez opted for the one-time payment, which totaled $759,878 before taxes, which is still above and beyond the $600 he thought he won. You must be wondering what someone would do with that much extra money and his answer won’t disappoint. Velasquez told NBC News he plans “to take care of his family and possibly start his own business.”

How the situation played out is like an episode from a sitcom. Man goes to grocery store to grab a few drinks and picks up a $10 scratch-off making him an instant winner … and then there’s more. To be in the room when he was given the life-changing news would’ve have been a wonderful thing to witness.

Had Velasquez taken payments on the money, he would’ve received it over a 30-year period, which would have totaled a little more than $30,000 a year without taxes. What average American couldn’t use an extra $30,000 a year? Weighed against the lump sum alternative, it’s safe to say that many would’ve made the same choice.

Hopefully Velasquez will be able to build a wildly successful business with the money he has won.

As a bonus, the store that sold the winning ticket got a little financial boost from the Virginia Lottery, too. Safeway, the supermarket where the lucky scratch-off player bought his ticket, received a $10,000 bonus from the lottery organization.

The Lakers Released A Statement Edition Jersey That Is A Little Different From Last Year’s Statement Edition Jersey

We’re in the midst of one of the more boring periods of the NBA calendar, as teams are gearing up for training camp, big offseason moves have largely already happened, and everyone is trying to get one last break in before the upcoming season begins in earnest. That means teams around the league that are looking to gin up some publicity are able to turn to one tried and true way to do that: releasing the jerseys they are going to wear this year.

For the Los Angeles Lakers, that meant dropping their Statement Edition jersey for the 2022-23 campaign. The team did this on Thursday afternoon, and boy, it is … almost exactly the same as the Statement Edition jersey that they wore during 2021-22. There are a few little changes, but for the most part, it is a purple Lakers uniform with yellow and black elements of it.

You can compare that to the picture at the top of this post, which shows LeBron James in the purple unis the team wore last year. The main differences come in the numbers being black and yellow instead of yellow and white, along with the decision to eschew white altogether and go with yellow and black touches on the purple base. Anyway, they’re fine.

Feid Cleverly Responds To His New Album Leaking By Releasing It Months Early With A Cheeky Title

After expecting to release his album in December, Feid decided to drop it early last night (September 14) following a leak. Feliz Cumpleaños Ferxxo Te Pirateamos El Álbum includes the Colombian singer-songwriter’s recent hit “Normal” and “XQ Te Pones Así” featuring Puerto Rican icon Yandel.

In the music video for “Feliz Cumpleaños Ferxxo,” Feid hinted that his next album would be released on December 1. On Tuesday, he revealed that the album had been leaked and he decided to release it early as Feliz Cumpleaños Ferxxo Te Pirateamos El Álbum, which translates to “Happy Birthday Ferxxo We Pirated Your Album.” Ferxxo is a nickname that Feid’s fans lovingly call him by.

“A little sad that my album was leaked,” Feid wrote in an Instagram post. “I had very different plans than these, but God knows how he does his things and I trust he has the best for FERXXOOOOO.”

Feid is known for co-writing J Balvin‘s breakthrough hit “Ginza” in 2015. In the past few years, he’s carved out a space for himself as an artist with his sentimental reggaeton sound. Recently, Feid has collaborated with fellow Colombian acts like Maluma in “Mojando Asientos” and Karol G in “Friki.” His biggest hit this year, “Normal,” was certified Platinum in the US in under two months.

A surprise collaboration on the album is “XQ Te Pones Así” with Yandel. Yandel helped usher in the first wave of reggaeton’s global breakthrough in the 2000s as part of the duo Wisin y Yandel. Feid also teamed up with his longtime producer Sky for the alluring reggaeton romp “Quemando Calorías.”

Feid added that he will release another LP on December 1. Following his historic run of three consecutive sold-out concerts at Medellín’s La Macarena arena this past weekend, he feels inspired to create more songs. “I’m going to make you another album,” he said in an Instagram live. That next LP is expected to feature his highly-anticipated collaboration with hip-hop legend DJ Premier.

Feliz Cumpleaños Ferxxo Te Pirateamos El Álbum is out now via Universal Music Latin. Listen to it here.

Report: Seahawks Safety Jamal Adams Will Get Surgery On His Torn Quad And Miss The Rest Of The Season

The Seattle Seahawks picked up an emotional win on Monday Night Football this week. Longtime signal caller Russell Wilson led his new team, the Denver Broncos, into Lumin Field, and despite the fact that they were 6-point home underdogs in one of the most raucous environments in the sport, Seattle was able to pick up a 17-16 victory.

The win did come despite an injury to starting safety Jamal Adams. During the game’s second quarter, Adams went down with a leg injury, and in the aftermath of the game, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said that he will “have to get some work on that.” And on Thursday afternoon, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network brought word that Adams will indeed go under the knife to repair a torn quadriceps tendon.

The team will respond by signing Teez Tabor off of the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad.

It is a brutal turn of events for Adams, who signed a contract with the Seahawks prior to the 2021 season worth up to $72 million to make him the highest-paid safety in NFL history. Adams came to Seattle one year earlier via a trade with the New York Jets. He was a first-team All-Pro selection in 2019 and made the second-team All-Pro squad in 2018 and 2020.
