Adults share things teens ‘aren’t ready to hear,’ and it’s some solid advice for all ages

No one who has ever lived to see old age has also thwarted growing older. But with age comes the gift of wisdom, along with maybe a wrinkle or too.

However, passing along that hard-earned knowledge isn’t always easy. After all, when we’re younger, the world seems to be much more simple. We are not yet fully aware that things never stop changing—trends that were once the “it” things will eventually become a source of embarrassment. Or worse … come back as “retro” or “nostalgic.” Ouch.

That’s right, kids. Believe it or not, there will come a time when even Billie Eilish isn’t cool anymore!

Of course, we’re not just talking about fashion or taste in music. Hopefully, we all expand our world view after our teenage years, growing more mature, grounded and less self-absorbed. That’s not always the case, of course, but that is the goal.

Reddit user u/Slight_Weight asked folks to share things that teens today “are not ready to hear.” Honestly I expected to find cynical, snarky “kids today don’t know anything” type of comments. But on the contrary, a lot of it really was tough love. And truthfully, much of the advice isn’t age-specific. They’re just good “be a kind human” reminders all around. And then other answers were just plain funny.

Check out 17 of the best answers. For the youngsters, just trust us on this. And for the … um … more refined crowd, you’ll probably relate to them all.

Some things you struggle with will come very easily to others, but some things they struggle with will come very easily to you. Don’t be mad that someone possesses skills you don’t, and don’t be a jerk for possessing skills that many other people don’t.” – @OskeeWootWoot

In 1974, Gladys Knight sang the Grammy nominees for best song. She slayed every single one.

In this world, there is no shortage of people who can carry a tune. But there are singers, and then there are singers.

We don’t need to debate who has the best singing voice, as that’s really a matter of taste. But there are a handful of singers who can sing anything, anytime, anywhere and sound amazing every single time they open their mouths.

In 1974, Gladys Knight clearly solidified her spot on that list.

At the 16th Grammy Awards, Gladys Knight and the Pips were the presenters for Song of the Year. But instead of simply naming the nominees, Knight sang snippets from each song (with some backup help from the band and the Pips).

Knight was 29 years old at the time and had just won her first two Grammy awards, one for Best R&B Vocal Performance By A Duo, Group Or Chorus with “Midnight Train to Georgia” and one for Best Pop Vocal Performance By A Duo, Group Or Chorus with “Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye).”

Even for an award-winning singer, the idea of singing the nominations—parts of five different songs from five different artists in five different styles back to back—seems daunting. But Knight pulled it off flawlessly, sounding as good as, if not better than, each of the original artists as she sang. The richness of her voice, her pitch-perfect delivery and the emotion with which she sang each song is simply unreal.

Watch her just effortlessly slay portions of each of these nominees:

“Feel Like Makin’ Love” (Greg McDaniels)

“I Honestly Love You” (Peter Allen, Jeff Barry)

“Midnight at the Oasis” (David Nichtern)

“The Way We Were” (Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman, Marvin Hamlisch)

“You and Me Against the World” (Paul Williams, Kenneth Ascher)

She isn’t known as the Empress of Soul for nothing.

Knight has won seven Grammy awards and has been inducted into both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame (along with the Pips). Most recently, she made headlines for her gracious response after a sports commentator mistook Dionne Warwick for her at Serena Williams’ final tennis match. Though both singers were in attendance, they were not sitting together and when cameras panned to Warwick, the announcer mistook her for Knight.

“Dionne and I have been sisters for a long time, and I hope she is as honored to be mistaken for me as I would be her,” Knight said in a statement to NBC News. “I’m sure it was an honest mistake. It was a blessing to be in the house to see Serena’s greatness.”

Knight will also be starring in an upcoming holiday film, “Someday at Christmas.

Brian Windhorst’s Pointing Meme Came Full Circle When He Posed With Donovan Mitchell

The Cleveland Cavaliers announced their newest player on Wednesday afternoon. After the team pulled off a move to acquire Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz earlier this month, Mitchell finally got to northeast Ohio today for an introductory press conference that, apparently, also included a sit-down interview with Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

Windhorst and the Jazz’s pair of big offseason moves — Mitchell and Rudy Gobert — were linked based off of a First Take segment he joined earlier in the summer. The long, winding, hand gesture-y clip of Windhorst breaking down Royce O’Neale’s trade to the Brooklyn Nets went viral and led to the basketball-watching universe making a ton of jokes and memes and all sorts of other things.

To celebrate his finally getting unveiled, Mitchell and Windhorst took a moment to throw their index fingers in the air and recreate the most famous image from that clip.

In the interview, Mitchell alluded to something he said during his introductory press conference about how close he came to joining the presumed frontrunners for his services, the New York Knicks. Mitchell went as far as to say that “I won’t say more than [very close], but I know a little bit more than most.”

The Cavaliers parted way with numerous first-round draft picks, Collin Sexton, Lauri Markkanen, and Ochai Agbaji to acquire Mitchell’s services.

Maya Hawke Wouldn’t Mind Getting A Really Good Death Scene In The Final Season Of ‘Stranger Things’

There’s one more season left of Stranger Things, which begs the question: What kind of ending will it get? Will it stick the landing, like Mad Men or Breaking Bad? Or will it be so divisive it spooks anyone working on a prequel, as with Game of Thrones? Whatever happens, supporting player Maya Hawke knows what she wants for her character: a good, awesome death scene.

“It’s the last season, so people are probably going to die,” the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, who’s played Robin Buckley since 2019, told Rolling Stone (as caught by Entertainment Weekly). “I would love to die and get my hero’s moment. I’d love to die with honor, as any actor would.”

If that happens, that would mean Hawke wouldn’t be around for any potential reunion shows or series, like if they decided to do one in 10 years but set it in the Clinton ‘90s. Then again, anything can happen on Stranger Things, such as bringing back a character who got a top shelf death scene. Then again again, endings are underrated in the era of franchises, and there are few better honors for an actor than a really good send-off, even if that eats into any future paychecks down the line.

Hawke is busy anyway, with a new movie en route and a music career taking off, resulting in risqué videos. In other words, give her a death scene. She’ll be fine.

Grimes Was So Starstruck To Meet George R.R. Martin She Introduced Herself As A Completely Different Pop Star

At this point, avant-garde indie-pop singer Grimes is becoming as well-known for her outlandish statements as she is for her music. The truly bewildering part is that nobody can tell whether or not she’s just trolling when she says things like the “earth is only 4,000 years old” or that she wants to surgically modify herself into a creature from a Guillermo Del Toro movie.

Her latest wild claim is about meeting her idol, Game Of Thrones author George R.R. Martin. She says that while she doesn’t normally get starstruck, she was so dumbfounded when she met him that she introduced herself as a completely different pop star. “I’m immune to most celebrities,” she wrote on Twitter. “but when I met George RR Martin I was so beside myself that when he asked my name I said ‘Gaga’. Unbelievably tragic fumble.”

As with most of her offbeat tweets, it’s unclear if she’s trolling and if she is, just who she is. Did she really call herself Lady Gaga? Was this some sort of elaborate revenge for his near-constant pump-faking about finishing his long-running series, A Song Of Ice And Fire? Or was she really such a big fan of the books that she temporarily forgot her stage name and offered the first one to share a letter with hers (the only reasonable explanation for such a strange error)? The answer is only truly known to Grimes, who for better or worse, at least offers plenty of entertainment value.

R. Kelly Is Found Guilty On Over Half The Charges In His Child Pornography Trial In Chicago

For the past two weeks, R. Kelly has been on trial for child pornography charges in Chicago. Today, after two days of deliberation, the jury reached a verdict. Kelly was accused of 13 charges, including producing child pornography, enticing minors for sex, and obstructing justice his 2008 child pornography trial. He was found guilty, according to CBS Chicago, of six of the 13 counts.

Ahead of the trial, Kelly made efforts to ban jurors who’d seen the Lifetime docuseries Surviving R. Kelly on the grounds that they’d be biased against him. After the judge dismissed his request, the trial proceeded in late August. Among the witnesses against Kelly were the now-37-year-old woman who featured in the leaked original sextape when she was just 14 years old. Testifying under a false name after being granted immunity for lying on the stand in the 2008 trial. “because I was afraid to expose Robert…,” she said, “I became exhausted with living with his lies.”

Another witness for the prosecution testified that he’d been offered a substantial reward to recover the leaked tape. He said that, in addition to receiving $100,000 plus expenses, it was suggested to him that he could earn up to $1 million to verify it was the original tape and no copies had been made. He also said he kept copies until as recently as 2019, but only turned them in after learning the police were investigating him “because the police wasn’t going to pay me a million dollars.”

Kelly was previously convicted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges in a separate, federal case in New York City. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison and sexual disorder treatment, and the judge ruled that his prison funds could be given to his victims.

Eight Years After The ‘Serial’ Podcast First Looked Into His Case, Prosecutors Ask For Adnan Syed’s Murder Conviction To Be Vacated

During its first season back in 2014, the podcast Serial focused on the 1999 strangulation murder of Hae Min Lee, whose investigation resulted in the conviction of Adnan Syed, 17 at the time of her death. Syed has always maintained his innocence, and Serial — as well as the HBO doc series The Case Against Adnan Syed — have led many to question his sentence while obsessing over certain theories. Over the last two decades-plus, there have been multiple appeals and one failed attempt at a new trial. But now there’s yet another twist in the case.

As per The Wall Street Journal, prosecutors in Baltimore are asking that Syed’s conviction be vacated, citing a year-long investigation they say has produced new evidence, including two possible alternative suspects. As such, they arguing for a new trial. They won’t assert that Syed is innocent, but they will say the State “no longer has confidence in the integrity of the conviction.” Until that new trial, they say Syed should be released of his own recognizance.

Among the new evidence is one point that particularly captivated obsesses of the case: the grassy lot where Lee’s car was found, which some think may completely change the investigation. That information was not available in the 2000 trial that resulted in a life sentence for Syed.

There’s also evidence pointing to two suspects, who may have worked together or independently — information that was also not present in the initial trial:

In their reinvestigation, prosecutors found a document in the state’s trial file detailing one person’s statement, saying that one of the suspects had motive to kill Ms. Lee and had threatened her in the presence of another person. The suspect said “he would make her [Ms. Lee] disappear. He would kill her,” according to the court filing.

Prosecutors point to what they call an “abundance of issues that gives the State overwhelming cause for concern.” The reinvestigation, however, is still ongoing, so this may take a bit.

YG Says He ‘Wasted’ Half A Million Dollars On His ‘Run’ Video

YG has taken Nipsey Hussle’s advice from “Last Time That I Checc’d” and run with it, taking control of his music and career as he comes up on his final album under his Def Jam contract, I Got Issues. He’s going out with a bang, too, blowing the budget on singles like “Toxic,” “Alone,” and “Run” — especially the latter, as he told HipHopDX during a recent listening session for the album in Los Angeles.

“I waste a lot of money on videos,” he said. In fact, for “Run” he admitted he spent, “like, half a million out of my own pocket. And I’m mad because I thought the song was gonna be this crazy hit, and it’s not. I wasted my money.” He said there was a consolation though: “They say millionaires invest hundreds of thousands into themselves and billionaires invest millions into themselves,” he reflected. “I’m at the point where I’m investing millions into myself, so I should be a billionaire one of these days.”

Like the man said, “‘Scared Money‘ don’t make no money.” Should his investment in himself pay off the way he expects we might just be looking back and marveling at his foresight.

I Got Issues is out 9/30 via Def Jam.

Gunna And Lil Baby’s 2018 Hit ‘Drip Too Hard’ Goes Diamond

It has only been four years since rising Atlanta rappers Gunna and Lil Baby joined forces to drop their joint album Drip Harder, which arguably helped make them both bonafide rap stars, if not household names. Yet, in those short years, the lead single from the project, “Drip Too Hard,” has reached a high watermark fewer than 100 other songs have ever achieved: receiving a Diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The Diamond certification marks ten million equivalent units sold. For digital awards, a unit is defined as a digital download or 150 streams.

In the history of the RIAA’s 70-year existence, only 86 songs had reached this mark before “Drip Too Hard.” Included on that list are all-time favorites like Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” certified in January this year, “Thriller,” certified in August, and “Candle In The Wind” by Elton John. Rappers who’ve made the list include Eminem, whose 2010 single “Not Afraid” reached DIamond in June 2014, Wiz Khalifa (“See You Again,” 2019), Drake (“God’s Plan,” 2019), and Lil Nas X, whose debut single “Old Town Road” was mistakenly reported Diamond-certified less than a year after its release and later actually crossed the finish line in January 2021.

Unfortunately, only one of the two is free to celebrate their remarkable achievement. Gunna remains imprisoned, awaiting trial as he and Young Thug are accused of racketeering and other criminal activity. Meanwhile, Lil Baby is preparing the release of his third studio album, It’s Only Me, which is coming in October.

Check out the video for “Drip Too Hard” above.
