Chris Rock Has Reportedly Been Offered A ‘Sh*t-Ton’ Of Money To Host The Golden Globes

The Oscars weren’t the only awards show trying to capitalize on Chris Rock getting slapped by Will Smith in front of the entire world. According to a new report, the Golden Globes tried to lock down Rock as a host for next year’s ceremony. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association reportedly offered Rock what’s being described as a “sh*t-ton” of money, but the comedian gave the Globes the same answer he gave the Oscars when they tried to get him to come back: No thanks.

As Puck reports, the Golden Globes are in a tenuous spot after last year’s broadcast was scuttled when major stars boycotted the event over diversity issues. The awards ceremony is trying to make a comeback, but it needs all the ratings it can get hence the move to pull a dump truck full of money up to Rock’s house. Via Comic Book:

This year’s show will be on NBC and Peacock, but there’s just a one-year deal in place, meaning that if their ratings don’t perform, there’s no guarantee of a new deal next year.

Using a very appropriate sports metaphor, Puck summed up the situation: “the Globes now are basically an aging player in a contract year, hoping to avoid a career-ending injury (like a celebrity boycott), put up impressive-enough numbers, test free agency, and ultimately take their talents to South Beach-or in this case, CBS or Netflix.”

Of course, if the Globes are that desperate for numbers, they could go in the other direction and ask Will Smith to host. People would probably tune in just to see how many celebrities flinch when walking onstage to get their awards. Something to think about.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Release A Heartfelt New Tribute Song In Honor Of Eddie Van Halen

The Red Hot Chili Peppers, after hearing a bass line that Flea played, decided to craft a tribute song to late Eddie Van Halen called, appropriately, “Eddie.” The new song also serves as a single from the band’s upcoming album Return Of The Dream Canteen, which drops in October and will be their second album of the year following Unlimited Love.

Instead of lyrically being a blatant description of Eddie’s life, lead singer Anthony Kiedis opted to sing about Eddie’s memories and life on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip during the ’80s. He sings, “Granny would take a trip, I’ve been bending the strings / Got hammers in both my hands, such a delicate touch / They say I’m from Amsterdam, does that make me Dutch?”

Kiedis also shared an emotional Instagram statement about the song through the official RHCP account. “Sometimes we don’t realize how deeply affected and connected we are to artists until the day they die,” he said.

“Eddie Van Halen was a one of a kind,” Kiedis continued. “The day after his death, Flea came into rehearsal with an emotional bass line. John [Frusciante], Chad [Smith], and I started playing along and pretty soon with all our hearts, a song in his honor effortlessly unfolded. It felt good to be sad and care so much about a person who had given so much to our lives.”

Return Of The Dream Canteen is out 10/14 via Warner Records. Pre-save it here.

Britney Spears’ Second Post-Conservatorship Song May Arrive Soon If Baz Luhrmann Gets His Way

The soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann’s recent Elvis biopic was star-studded, as it included tracks from artists like Eminem, Tame Impala, Doja Cat, and many others. An interesting note about that soundtrack, though, is that it doesn’t feature one song that was made for, and appears in, the movie: a mash-up of Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas” and Britney Spears’ 2003 hit “Toxic.”

Luhrmann really wants to get the song out there, though, and if he does, it will be Spears’ second post-conservatorship release, following her and Elton John’s “Hold Me Closer.”

Luhrmann told Rolling Stone, “There’s a lot of love, a lot of intense love for the Britney/Elvis track in the movie, and it’s my commitment to try [to release the song].” He added, “It’s my passion and commitment to try to get all parties involved in getting it completed and out there for the fans, as I know Britney herself and Elvis are, in so many ways, connected in their own different journeys.”

It seems rights issues are holding up the track’s release, as he says the remix is “fully done” but he’s “just trying to unravel it” in terms of dropping the tune.

He also drew a more specific connection between Spears and Presley, noting, “Just like Britney, who creates the quintessential ’90s pop music, you’re richer than God and you’re in the Hollywood bubble. That’s what happens to Elvis. He’s gone from being this rebel, this punk, deeply steeped with his Black music friends doing radical music, to suddenly being isolated in Hollywood doing pop.”

10 things that made us smile this week

Since we’re entering cold and flu season while also (still) trying to fend off COVID-19, we could all use some tips for boosting our immune system. We probably all know the standards—eating well, getting enough sleep, exercising—but did you know that joy can also give your immune system a kick?

According to the Mayo Clinic, laughter can release neuropeptides that can help prevent illness from becoming more serious and help fight stress that can weaken your immune system. A 2003 study found that people with more positive emotional states were less likely to develop a common cold, a 2015 study found that laugh therapy helped boost the immune response in women who had just given birth and multiple other studies have come to similar conclusions.

According to ENT-otolaryngologist Dr. Murray Grossan, even a simple smile can offer immunity benefits. “What’s crazy is that just the physical act of smiling can make a difference in building your immunity,” Dr. Grossan told NBC News. “When you smile, the brain sees the muscle [activity] and assumes that humor is happening.”

So consider this list a weekly dose of emotional inoculation. Can’t guarantee it’ll keep you from catching anything, but it certainly isn’t gonna hurt ya!

Enjoy!

So beautiful. Mute swans are one of the few bird species that mate for life. (And whoever played the “Swan Lake” theme over this was brilliant.)

“Hey, hooman. You okay? Let me smoosh my face on you to make you feel better.”

Indiecast Reviews Alex G’s ‘God Save The Animals’ And Pavement’s Reunion Tour

It’s fairly common to see rock artists lean into pop territory these days, but what about pop artists who are turning to punk? On this week’s Indiecast episode, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen discuss Mariah Carey’s rumored grunge album, which has been kept a secret since it was recorded in 1995. Plus, they review Alex G’s new album God Save The Animals, talk Pavement’s buzzy reunion tour, and Smashing Pumpkins’ upcoming, massive triple album.

Of course, Indiecast also had some trends to hash out this week. Another music-related course was added to NYU’s roster, this time about Lana Del Rey, which prompted a discussion on the importance (or lack thereof) of studying music journalism in college. The biggest music news story this week was from Drake, who got into a public argument with The Needle Drop’s Anthony Fantano, which probably boosted the music critic’s cred more than it hurt it.

In the Recommendation Corner this week, Ian notes ISIS’ Oceanic 20-year reissue. Meanwhile, Steven praises Elkhorn’s new album Distances.

Harry Styles And Florence Pugh Connect For A Creepy New Song From ‘Don’t Worry Darling’

Don’t Worry Darling (that movie surrounded by all the Florence Pugh/Olivia Wilde/Harry Styles/Chris Pine/Shia Labeouf drama) is out today (September 23) and so too is its soundtrack. To the OST, Styles contributed a creepy new song called “With You All The Time,” on which Pugh sings and Styles plays piano. The song marks Styles’ first collaboration as a solo artist since his One Direction days.

In a recent Variety interview, Styles said of the track, “I wanted something that could be both sweet and creepy, entirely dependent on the context. I remember first playing it on the piano, and it had a sort of homemade nursery rhyme feel to it. Applied to the different moments in the film, I think it takes on a couple of different lives — I hope.”

Wilde also said, “In prep, Harry called me and said, ‘What’s the trigger song? Like, what’s the melody?’ I said, ‘I don’t know. I’m going to different writers to write it. Do you have anything in mind?’ And he said, ‘I’ll think about it.’ Five minutes later, he sent me a demo from his piano, and it was what ended up in the film. He called me and said, ‘What about this?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s it. That’s it. And that’s really insane that you did that in five minutes.’”

Taylor Swift Will Have Her First-Ever Song Title With A Swear In It On ‘Midnights’

While new songs come out every day that have swear/curse words in their titles, that’s not as common with Taylor Swift’s music. In fact, across her discography, she has never released a song that has a swear in its name. (That’s not to say she doesn’t swear in her music; Evermore was actually her most profane album to date.) That will all change with the release of Midnights, though, as Swift has revealed it will feature her first-ever explicit song title.

In a new series of TikTok videos dubbed “Midnights Mayhem With Me,” Swift has been gradually revealing the tracklist of the upcoming album. She previously unveiled “Mastermind” a few days ago, and in her latest video shared last night (September 22), she revealed that the album’s eighth track is called “Vigilante Sh*t.”

Meanwhile, Folklore previously featured Swift’s first use of the word “f*ck” in a song. She was later asked how it felt to have the word on a track and she replied simply, “F*cking fantastic.”

Swift previously described the new album, “This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching — hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve … We’ll meet ourselves.”

Midnights is out 10/21 via Republic. Pre-order it here.

Cardi B Joins Glorilla On The Boastful Bar Fest ‘Tomorrow 2’

Cardi B gave GloRilla her biggest music moment yet by joining her on the remix to “Tomorrow,” from CMG’s compilation album Gangsta Art, titled “Tomorrow 2.” The two rappers are very dismissive of their haters on this record, but make plenty of time to brag about all of their high qualities.

GloRilla opens the record with the lines “Poppin’ sh*t, you would think I went to school for chiropractor / Lookin’ good as hell today, just sent my n**** five attachments / Why would you confront me about a n****? Man, you b*tches backwards / They come at me ’bout n****s I don’t even find attractive.”

Cardi jumps in later with fury, spitting “Ridin’ with my twin and nem, and we all on / She say she my opp but I don’t know her, had to look her up / I know that I’m rich but I can’t help it, b*tch, I’m hood as fuck / I’ve been on these b*tches necks so long, sometimes my foot get stuck.”

“Tomorrow 2,” announced Wednesday (September 21) follows a string of successes for GloRilla. The rapper signed with CMG after the success of her summer smash “FNF” with Hitkidd, which later received a remix featuring Latto and JT, one-half of the City Girls.

Cardi B has had an active 2022, with her most recent offering coming in the form of “Hot Sh*t” with Kanye West and Lil Durk. The Bronx artist appeared on B-Lovee’s “Shake It” alongside Dougie B and Bory300, as well as the extended version of Summer Walker’s “No Love” alongside SZA. Her feature run dates back to around her smash single “Up” in 2021, following that up with Migos’s “Type Sh*t,” Normani’s “Wild Side,” and Lizzo’s “Rumors.”

Lil Baby And Tears For Fears Share The 2022 World Cup Budweiser Anthem ‘The World Is Yours To Take’

Lil Baby has inarguably reached the biggest milestone in his career as he has released the official, Budweiser-sponsored 2022 World Cup anthem “The World Is Yours To Take” alongside Tears For Fears. This track will appear with multiple others on the official World Cup soundtrack.

The My Turn rapper kicks the record off, spitting “I’m by far one of the hardest workers / Real firm believer in practice makes perfect / You can gather all the water, stay thirsty / Took a lot to get us here, we broke curses.” The rapper also reflects on the effects COVID-19 had on the country, but celebrates that everyone is back outside winning.

Tears For Fears comes in the refrain, singing “Everybody wants to rule the world” repeatedly as Baby ad-libs in between each line.

“The World Is Yours To Take” follows a highly active year for Lil Baby. The Atlanta rapper shared “Detox” earlier this month and appeared twice on DJ Khaled’s 13th studio album God Did, namely the lead single “Staying Alive” with Drake and “Big Time” with Future. The “Freestyle” artist also joined forces with Nav and Travis Scott on “Never Sleep,” the lead single from Nav’s latest album Demons Protected By Angels. At the top of the year, he and Nicki Minaj released back-to-back collaborations with “Do We Have A Problem?” followed by “Bussin.”

As for Tears For Fears, they released “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and a sped-up version of the record in August. The band shared their latest album The Tipping Point back in February after a nearly two-year hiatus since the “super deluxe” version of The Seeds Of Love came out.

Given Tears For Fears’s skin in the game dating back to the 1980s and Lil Baby arguably being in his prime today, this is literally a collaboration for the ages.

Check out Lil Baby and Tears For Fears on “The World Is Yours To Take,” the official 2022 World Cup song sponsored by Budweiser, above.

Giveon Shares The Drake-Assisted Single ‘Time’ From The ‘Amsterdam’ Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Giveon is back with his new single “Time,” which is set to appear in the original motion picture soundtrack for Amsterdam. Amsterdam hits theaters on October 7 and this track builds quite the momentum as it features songwriting from Drake and Daniel Pemberton plus production from Pemberton and Jahaan Sweet.

“Time” falls right into Giveon’s typical, downtempo pocket. The Long Beach artist croons to a woman, expressing his appreciation for the moments they spent together. “The time when things were better / Will stay for as long as I can remember / So much that I have done has withered away / But never these memories I cherish today.”

“Time” follows Giveon’s debut studio album Give Or Take which was released back in June. Give Or Take was led by the singles “For Tonight” and “Lie Again.” The year prior he appeared on “In The Bible” alongside Lil Durk from Drake’s album Certified Lover Boy and “Peaches” alongside Daniel Caesar from Justin Bieber’s Justice in addition to releasing the compilation project When It’s All Said And Done…Take Time, which is made up of his two 2020 EPs.

With Grammy nominations and BET Awards performances under his belt, the sky is the limit and, much like the new track he released, “Time” is of the essence for Giveon. He simply doesn’t want the good memories to fade away as he progresses.

Check out the new single “Time” above.
