Blackpink Pulls Up To ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ To Perform ‘Shut Down’ For The First Time

And so the Blackpink shut downs have officially begun.

The K-pop powerhouses made their performance debut — or in K-pop terms, “comeback performance” debut — of their newest single “Shut Down” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night, September 19. Pulling up to the show with backup dancers, members Jennie, Jisoo, Rosé, and Lisa utilized the talk show’s set to showcase the group’s striking choreography.

Though the stage setup may not have sparklers, or fire, or some sort of fog machine like in Korean music shows, it’s safe to say the concept of the performance was to embody what a shut down with Blackpink really looked like with the flashing lights surrounding them. Blackpink, as expected, delivered and served. (Did you hear the Blinks in the audience during their performance?)

Last Friday (September 16), the YG Entertainment powerhouses released their second sophomore album, Born Pink, at midnight alongside the music video to lead single “Shut Down.” As album promotions kicked off on release day where a Blackpink Pop-Up Experience hosted by Spotify was setup in Los Angeles, the members of Blackpink also took a trip to a local Target to check out their own albums in store.

Following their album promotions, the group will kick off their Born Pink World Tour next month (October 15 and 16) in Seoul, then stop in North America and Europe.

Seth Meyers Tore Into Ron DeSantis For His ‘Ghoulish And Cruel’ Martha’s Vineyard Stunt

Seth Meyers didn’t mince words when it came to his feelings about Ron DeSantis’ “especially cruel and sadistic stunt” of lying “to a group of undocumented migrants to lure them onto a plane,” which dropped them off on the mostly abandoned island of Martha’s Vineyard. While it’s easy to picture DeSantis (who Trevor Noah declared “Earth’s biggest dick”) snickering like a cartoon villain at his own repulsive — and some say illegal — antics, Meyers wasn’t amused.

On Monday night, the Late Night host dedicated a large portion of his “A Closer Look” segment to the Florida governor’s very public display of human trafficking. The way Meyers sees it, using immigration as a “scare tactic” in an election year is already a tried-and-true part of the Republican playbook (though noted historian/documentarian Ken Burns likened the governor to Hitler). As a result, says Meyers, “everyone is onto them. Which is now why they’re trying to out-MAGA themselves with increasingly ghoulish and despicable acts of cruelty toward migrants fleeing poverty and violence.”

Case in point: DeSantis, who last week decided that it would be a total riot if he used a ton of taxpayer money earmarked to fight COVID and used it to send 48 undocumented Venezuelan migrants, including young children and some elderly individuals, from San Antonio (which is NOT in Florida) to Martha’s Vineyard, in an attempt to apparently stick it to residents of the wealthy island, which is basically abandoned following Labor Day. Meyers had a lot to say about the governor’s “grotesque scheme,” which he believes was “designed entirely to curry favor with Fox News, who he apparently alerted beforehand.” As Meyers explained:

You see, they thought the people who live on Martha’s Vineyard would freak out. Instead, residents and community organizations scrambled — without any notice — to provide aid and comfort to the migrants…

So congrats, Florida. You just spent a bunch of taxpayer money on a stupid and repulsive stunt that achieved nothing except maybe some publicity for Ron DeSantis’ 2024 presidential bid. And worse than that, you gave the rich liberals who summer on Martha’s Vineyard another thing to feel self-righteous about.

Meyers also pointed out that “most of the liberals you hate left the Vineyard two weeks ago.” And he should know, as he is one of them!

Which is why he noted that “it’s important to make a distinction between the people who spend their summers on the island and people who live there year-round, like the hardworking staff at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, who rose to the occasion with grace and empathy.” It’s also worth taking a deep look into your own soul when Donald Trump is complaining that you stole his idea.

You can watch the full segment above, beginning around the 5:55 mark.

John Oliver Is Very Confused Why His ‘Not A Joke’ About Queen Elizabeth Was Censored In The U.K.

Everyone responded to the death of Queen Elizabeth II differently. Some waited in line for over 24 hours to see a coffin; others watched The Emoji Movie. John Oliver, meanwhile, expressed his, uh, grief with a casual remark on HBO’s Last Week Tonight — a fact, really — that was bizarrely censored in the U.K.

After joking on Monday’s episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers that he’ll appear on the show whenever a senior royal kicks the bucket to “give it the disrespect it deserves,” Oliver called it a weird time to be in Britian. “This 10 days in forced mourning, apparently, has been very, very strange,” he said, including Sky censoring his Emmy-winning series.

“All we said was that Britain is still mourning the shocking loss — right? — of a 96-year-old woman from natural causes. It’s literally not a joke,” Oliver explained. “Scientifically, it’s not a joke. That’s just a fact with a kind of d*ck-ish inflection, that’s all it is.” And yet, “they cut it out,” he continued, “which is pretty sh*tty, because apparently all we’ve heard all week is the queen had the incredible sense of humor. Just nonstop. Oh, she was so funny. Seth, she was so funny. The queen, she was razor sharp.”

The queen lived for 96 years, and no one thought to ask her about Weekend at Bernie’s. What a missed opportunity. You can watch the Late Night with Seth Meyers clip above.

Most People Mispronounce Nickelback Singer Chad Kroeger’s Name But He’s Never Bothered Correcting Them

Nickelback have been doing just fine since their commercial apex in the early 2000s, continuing to pump out albums that have peaked in at least the top 5 on the US charts. They have a new album — Get Rollin’, which will be their first since 2017’s Feed The Machine — set to drop on November 18. So, in the coming months, a lot of people will be speaking about the band and singer Chad Kroeger, and when they do, they will probably say the vocalist’s name incorrectly.

The most widely used pronunciation of the singer’s last name is “Kroh-ger,” but it turns out it’s actually supposed to be said like “Kroo-ger”; think more like A Nightmare On Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger and less like the Kroger grocery store chain. Kroeger himself confirmed that on a recent episode of the Loudwire Nights podcast, saying, “It’s ‘Kroo-ger,’ don’t trust the internet.”

As for why he doesn’t really correct people on that, he explained, “I never get time, because it goes, ‘Hey, well here we are with Chad ‘Kroh-ger,’ dah-dah-dah-dah-dah, so how are things going?’ And by the time it gets… it’s so far in by the time I get to say something, I don’t actually… because if I just stop and go, ‘Actually, it’s ‘Kroo-ger,” I’m gonna look like such a [expletive]. So I’m just like, ‘Whatever, I don’t care.’”

Jimmy Fallon Goes Full Swiftie Breaking Down All Of Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ Easter Eggs

Jimmy Fallon and Taylor Swift both had surprise show-stopping moments at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards: Swift closed the VMAs by unexpectedly announcing her new album (later revealed to be called Midnights) while Fallon showed up with a beard and caused “thirst” and “confusion” online. Since that night, there have been a lot of Midnights developments and now Fallon has given them a proper run-down.

On The Tonight Show yesterday, Fallon made note that fans are finding Easter eggs in Swift’s social media posts, which prompted The Roots’ Tariq Trotter, playing along with the bit, to dismiss those findings as just “conspiracy theories.” Fallon then enthusiastically and thoroughly broke down everything, from the surprise announcement to the number 13 to the currently unknown song titles. He also noted Swift’s recent reveal that the backs of the special vinyl editions of Midnights go together to form a clock, which is thematically appropriate given the time-based album title. From there, he only went deeper.

Swift and Fallon have enjoyed a friendly relationship over the years, as Swift has appeared on The Tonight Show on many occasions. Perhaps her most notable visit came in 2017, on Fallon’s first episode since the death of his mother. Swift gave a surprise performance of “New Year’s Day,” which proved to be especially emotional for Fallon due to a coincidence involving the song’s lyrics.

Check out Fallon’s Midnights break-down above.

PnB Rock’s ‘GTTM: Goin Thru The Motions’ Re-Enters The ‘Billboard’ 200 Chart Following His Death

On September 12, Rakim Allen, better known as PnB Rock, tragically died at the age of 30 after being shot at Roscoe’s Chicken And Waffles in Los Angeles. Fans have been mourning the loss of the young rapper, so much so that his 2017 album GTTM: Goin Thru The Motions has re-entered the Billboard chart. It has been reported that the album landed at No. 125 on September 19, after debuting and peaking at No. 28 in February 2017.

In a Fox 11 broadcast from Wednesday, September 14, news anchor Hailey Winslow said that she spoke with Chief Michael Moore, who stated that PnB Rock posted himself at the Roscoe’s location on Instagram. “He was targeted because of an Instagram post, there were actually a couple: one from the rapper himself in the back parking lot when they first got here giving somebody enough time to get here and kill him,” Moore said.

Winslow clarified that the Chief “does believe that he was targeted because of the Instagram post. Now, I talked for an extensive amount of time to the property manager here who is actually the one who gave him the chest compressions, the CPR trying to save his life, and he confirmed with me that the rapper posted on Instagram in the back parking lot in a Cadillac with his girlfriend telling people that they were here.”

Ron DeSantis May Be In Big Trouble Now That A Criminal Investigation Has Been Opened Into His Martha’s Vineyard Stunt

For months, Florida governor and student bullier Ron DeSantis has earned the ire of Donald Trump, who sees him as an acolyte looking to steal his throne, which is to say his 2024 presidential candidacy. Now they have another thing in common: Both are now under criminal investigation.

As per the Miami Herald, authorities in Texas have formally opened an investigation into DeSantis’ Martha’s Vineyard stunt, in which 50 migrants were reportedly lured under false pretenses from San Antonio to Massachusetts, only to find themselves deposited on the swanky Massachusetts island. DeSantis took credit for the stunt, even as one shocking detail after another has emerged that paint him, as Daily Show host Trevor Noah put it, as “the Earth’s biggest dick.”

Since the stunt was made public, some have speculated whether DeSantis and those who helped him committed a crime, including human trafficking. That’s what Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar will be looking into.

“I believe people need to be held accountable for it to the extent possible,” Salazar said. “At this point, I’m not able to definitively say here’s the statute that they broke, either federal, state or local, but what I can tell you is it’s wrong. Just from a human rights perspective, what was done to these folks is wrong.”

Some of the migrants said they were surprised to find themselves on Martha’s Vineyard, claiming they’d been told they were going to Boston. On Monday, reports showed a brochure given to some of the migrants, which promised them housing, cash assistance, and jobs. Instead, they found themselves on the high-end vacation spot, where none of the three awaited them. DeSantis has offered vague denials of misleading the migrants.

DeSantis has emerged over the last couple years as arguably the most bulldoggish of Republican governors, willing to go to war against Joe Biden, the LGBTQIA+ community, even his state’s biggest employer. Now he may have upstaged even Texas governor Greg Abbott, who’s also been shipping immigrants to sanctuary cities and who’s also been accused of using refugees for political stunts. So far it’s worked; the likes of Fox News have eaten it up. But by going one step further than Abbott, DeSantis may have finally crossed a line even he wished he hadn’t crossed.

The pair were having fun, but people in the chat interpreted it in different ways. Many thought that this should’ve sparked a fight between them, prompting JT to take to Twitter to tell fans to calm down.

Texas teacher details how distrust and legal hoops have destroyed her classroom library

Few things are more integral to a child’s future successes than developing the skill and habit of reading. Study after study has shown that reading, even for pleasure, helps kids develop critical thinking skills, improve their vocabulary, increase their ability to understand others and more. Reading can even helps kids do better in math.

Because reading is such a vital learning tool, one would think caring parents would want schools to support kids reading however they can. That support might look like full, rich school libraries and classrooms full of books that kids can choose from when they have some downtime.

But a push for extreme censorship, fueled by politicians who see an opportunity to garner support through fear, has put teachers with large classroom libraries into impossible positions.

In a Facebook post that’s been shared more than 19,000 times, an elementary school teacher in Texas has detailed how her state’s new regulations on books in the classroom have made it virtually impossible to offer students the class library she’s been building for more than a decade. Emily Clay shared a photo of several shelves filled with bins of books.

“Here is my classroom library,” she wrote. “This is over 1,600 books chosen for my elementary students. This is over a decade and thousands of dollars and countless donations of collecting. This is my students’ favorite place to go in my classroom. This is where I go when I have a reluctant reader to find something just right to spark their interest.

“According to the state of Texas, this is dangerous. This is a place where children may be indoctrinated or exposed to inappropriate content. This is just one more area where teachers cannot be trusted as educational experts. This is a battleground.”

Clay shared that every teacher in her district now has to go through a tedious process that starts with entering the title, author and year published for every single book in their classroom into a spreadsheet. “Then we have to go through a painstaking process to vet each and every book—even if we’ve read them, even if we grew up reading them—to make sure that ‘real experts’ have determined that the book content is appropriate for the age level we teach, and also enter that data,” she wrote.

This summer, Clay scanned all of her classroom books into her own library system—a process that only required a barcode scan of each book. That alone took six hours, she said. There’s no way she could process each book and enter the details into a spreadsheet the way the policy requires within any reasonable amount of time. Even if each book took just three minutes to process, it would take 80 hours to enter her entire 1,600-book library. No teacher has even a fraction of that amount of time. And they are supposed to have this process completed by November.

“So what am I going to do?” she wrote. “I already don’t have on-contract time to do all the things we are required to do. What I’m going to do is box up every one of these books and put them away. And these shelves will be bare. I won’t be the only one putting away all of my books. Classrooms across Texas will be bare of libraries because of this.

“I ugly-cried this morning. One of my favorite things about my job is getting emails from parents telling me how enthusiastically their child is now reading at home.

“How are kids going to learn to love to read if they can’t hold books in their hands? Putting barriers between kids and books is one of the worst things I can think of.”

Roadblocking classroom reading material is especially harmful to low-income students, who may have few, if any, books at home to read.

As Clay points out in her post, kids already have access to all of the things parents are afraid they might see in a book right at their fingertips with smartphones, tablets and computers. Books aren’t the enemy here.

“Sure, there are some vigilant parents who make sure their children are never exposed to anything they don’t want them to see,” Clay wrote. “And while these parents could have chosen to take their kids to the public libraries themselves and choose books they deem appropriate, instead they chose to raise up their voices against teachers like me and decide that everyone’s child should be restricted; every child should have to live up to whatever standards they have chosen for their own children. They’ve made it clear they think we’re all in this profession to tarnish and brainwash their children. This TINY minority of people are the ones who are making things like this happen. And just like with everything else in our under-funded, under-respected, over-worked, under-paid, under-staffed industry, we’re probably all going to roll over and take it.”

But Clay also shared that more teachers will quit because of this kind of micromanagement. She’s right. People often think that teachers quit because they are underpaid, but often it’s the lack of respect for teachers as professionals and the top-down decisions that make teaching effectively difficult or impossible that push teachers away from their chosen career.

But Clay’s final words really get to the heart of why these hoops teachers are being asked to jump through are so problematic.

“I LOVE my students,” she wrote. “I would NEVER put anything in my classroom library that I thought might expose them to something inappropriate or too mature. I know I can get parent volunteers to come in and donate their time to help me catalog my extensive collection. But what I’m really mourning is the absolute lack of trust in highly-trained educators who have poured their souls into this profession and the children of people who believe we’re indoctrinating them.”

This goes so far beyond raising concerns about or even banning some specific titles. What this says is: We don’t trust teachers. We think you’re trying to harm kids with your cute little classroom library so we’re going to make it as hard as possible to even have one. If there are concerns over specific books? Fine, raise them. All reasonable people would agree that certain material is not appropriate for children at all and has no place in the classroom. Some books might fall into a subjective gray area and be up for debate, and that’s fine. Those are healthy debates to have.

But parents are taking issue with books that aren’t sexually explicit but simply include characters who have two same-sex parents or characters who are transgender—those books are simply reflective of the world kids live in. If parents are taking issue with books that give deference to the perspectives of people harmed by racism, that is also reflective of the world they live in. If parents are really that concerned, they can send kids to school with their own personal books to read from home and inform the teacher that they aren’t allowed to use the class library. Or they can choose to homeschool.

Just stop punishing teachers for crimes they haven’t committed and making their jobs far harder than they already are. They don’t deserve it, and it’s ultimately doing more harm than good to kids who benefit from access to classroom libraries.

Chrissy Teigen just learned her 2020 miscarriage was an abortion. She’s not alone.

Having a miscarriage is a devastating experience for most people that have experienced one. No one goes into a wanted pregnancy expecting this sad outcome, and for Chrissy Teigen and others like her, having a miscarriage later in pregnancy is beyond what most people can imagine. But two years ago, Teigen lost her son Jack at 20 weeks, after a complicated pregnancy that landed her in the hospital. Eventually, it was determined that to save Teigen’s life, the hospital would need to deliver the baby only halfway through her pregnancy. After some time processing the loss of her son, Teigen came to understand that what she had was, in fact, an abortion.

Since she shared the news recently at a summit called “A Day of Unreasonable Conversation,” people have been lambasting the expectant mom wondering how she couldn’t know. When I first heard about the criticism of her sharing her discovery, it knocked the wind out of me. One in four women experience a miscarriage and I happen to be one of them. Most people know someone who has experienced a miscarriage and they’ve hopefully treated them with care and compassion, but few people know what comes next for those of us who have miscarried babies.

After getting through the tears, depression and haze of having had this experience, insurance paperwork shows up in your mailbox or you happen to look over the discharge papers from the hospital and you read the words “spontaneous abortion” in the diagnosis section. If you’ve had a D&C (dilation and curettage) or D&E (dilation and evacuation), the paperwork may only read “abortion.” It reads this way because it’s a medical term, even though it’s a term that has become emotionally charged.

There are women like Teigen who may have been told something much less harsh when they miscarried. Doctors do their best to not cause extra duress on the person losing a child, so sentences like “we have to induce” or “we have to deliver” are used when they can, instead of words like “terminate” or “abortion.”

No matter the situation, oftentimes seeing the word “abortion” on your paperwork when the child you lost was very wanted can knock you off kilter. So many people have been where Teigen is, having the realization the procedure they had was classified as an abortion, even if their bodies completed the miscarriage on its own.

On a post about how Teigen may not have realized she had an abortion, hundreds of people shared their stories about learning what was written in their charts. One commenter, Jennifer, wrote, “I remember reading ‘habitual aborter’ in my medical record. It was horrible and anxiety inducing. I had three miscarriages back to back while trying very hard to have a baby. I was dealing with a lot. I was not ready to read that in my records.”

Another commenter, Julie, said “I remember reading ‘spontaneous abortion’ in my medical records after a very much wanted pregnancy that ended in miscarriage. It was devastating to read that. There’s a reason doctors and nurses don’t use that term with women going through that.”

Stephanie shared, “I had a D&E because I was bleeding so bad they were afraid I was going to bleed to death. Heartbeat was gone. 3 weeks later I opened the mail and opened up a report with the word ABORTION on it. I screamed and cried for two hours.”

The comments go on and on full of people who had no idea what they had was considered an abortion. It’s heartbreaking to know Teigen is facing such harsh criticism over her discovery. No one wants to become one in four and no one wants their experience invalidated by people who have never experienced the pain.

Medical terminology doesn’t care about the political atmosphere. It doesn’t care about how emotionally charged people get around seeing or hearing the word. Medical terminology is there so other doctors and insurance carriers know what’s going on and doctors do their best to shield grieving parents from terms that may make things worse.

Teigen may never see the comments people leave, but family and friends will. I don’t know if there will ever be a day where the word abortion doesn’t elicit such a visceral reaction from people, but education around how the word is used could be a start.
