‘Dark Winds’ Season 3: Everything To Know About The Return Of One Of The Best Crime Dramas On TV

dark-winds
Michael Moriatis/AMC

Netflix’s steady supply of original series receives a regular infusion of library editions, including August’s bountiful harvest of so many AMC shows. That includes The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, soon to premiere a second season, and Kevin Can Go F**k Himself, which concluded with two seasons although streaming viewers have been curious about a third installment. Meanwhile, the underappeciated Dark Winds truly will receive a third season that will air on AMC and stream on AMC+, presumably to land on Netflix at a later date.

The show hails from producers Robert Redford and the currently stressed-out George R.R. Martin, and if you were wondering, the fact that “Winds” is in the title of this noir crime thriller did make those waiting for Winds of Winter wonder if GRRM was trolling them (again?). However, Dark Winds stands on its own merits with no dragons needed to fuel the stories of 1970s-set Navajo Nation law enforcement. These officers handle everything from robberies to murders near a remote outpost while wading through personal and spiritual matters, too, so let’s get down to business with what we can expect next.

Plot

Dark Winds is adapted for the screen (from Tony Hillerman’s novels featuring Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Sergeant Jim Chee) by Native American writers, and over 90 percent of all cast and crew are Indigenous, which speaks to AMC’s commitment to bring Native stories to the forefront.

As viewers are aware, the first Dark Winds season adapts The Listening Woman involving a double murder, which is only one crime investigated by Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), who finds that each case is linked back to the mine explosion that killed his son. The second season follows Leaphorn’s continued search for answers on his son’s death while adapting People of Darkness, and after that season finale, director Chris Eyre expressed hopes for more while noting the abundance of source material to draw from. “I think Tony wrote 18 books,” Eyre remarked to Variety. “And his daughter, Anne Hillerman, is continuing the series, and she has about five books, I think. So there’s 23 novels to cull from.”

AMC hasn’t provided a third-season synopsis yet, but the New Mexico Film Office published these clues on its website:

Season three picks up six months after the events of season two as the duo investigates the disappearance of two boys, with only an abandoned bicycle and a blood-stained patch of ground left in their wake. Meanwhile, Bernadette Manuelito (Matten) attempts to settle into her new life 500 miles from home with the Border Patrol but stumbles across a conspiracy involving human and drug smuggling with far-reaching implications.

These details (if still accurate) could indicate that the third season is adapting Hillerman’s The Sinister Pig novel as the backbone of this season’s plot, and presumably, we’ll see more hints from AMC before the third season arrives. In early July, as well, Chee actor Kiowa Gordon and AMC revealed on Instagram that the show was “almost done filming Season 3 in beautiful New Mexico!” And the finished project cannot come soon enough for AMC viewers and a newfound influx of Netflix subscribers.

Cast

Zac McClarnon (Fargo) returns as Lt. Joe Leaphorn with Kiowa Gordon (Roswell, New Mexico) as Jim Chee and Jessica Matten (Burden of Truth) as Sgt. Bernadette Manuelito. Beyond this trio, the third season will include an array of guest stars: Jenna Elfman as FBI Special Agent Sylvia Washington; Raoul Max Trujillo as as Budge; Bruce Greenwood as Tom Spenser; Christopher Heyerdahl as Dr Reynolds; and Tonantzin Carmelo, Alex Meraz, and Terry Serpico as Border Patrol agents.

Release Date

AMC has been close-lipped so far about the series’ return date, but in Fall 2023, a network statement pointed towards “a target premiere date in early 2025.” In early September 2024, George R.R. Martin began teasing that the season would arrive “soon,” but GRRM is not exactly the most reliable source when it comes to dates, so AMC’s previous window stands: early 2025.

Trailer

Until a teaser surfaces, and it shouldn’t be too long, since filming is wrapped, we will be all over it. Until then, here’s the Dark Winds cast discussing the importance of representation for Native American voices.

What’s Popular On Streaming Now

REBEL RIDGE
Netflix

Every single week, our TV and film experts will list the most important ten streaming selections for you to pop into your queues. We’re not strictly operating upon reviews or accrued streaming clicks (although yes, we’ve scoured the streaming site charts) but, instead, upon those selections that are really worth noticing amid the churning sea of content. There’s a lot out there, after all, and your time is valuable.

10. Borderlands – Lionsgate movie on VOD & Amazon Prime

Although this movie’s VOD tour could never be substantial enough to help this misfire recoup its budget, some viewers’ curiosity is still strong enough to pull in a moderate amount of living room streams. Don’t expect a faithful adaptation to the game, however, because this story uses the same universe as a launching point, and that’s about it. Hollywood will likely take many lessons away from this film for many years, but after Craig Mazin’s distancing from the project (and he knows a bad script when he sees one), maybe executives should have seen this coming.

9. Slow HorsesApple TV+ series

Fart City, ahoy! That would be London when Jackson Lamb is walking around. Meanwhile, are you ready to see his living space? Because that’s coming this season, along with other messy thrills for these f*cked up MI5 agents who find themselves handling matters of utmost national importance. This season follows Mick Herron’s fourth Slough House novel, Spook Street, and Jackson’s cadre of misfits will find themselves embroiled within a terror attack in a shopping district. Come for the action and intrigue, and stick around for a grumpy, farting Gary Oldman in the role of his life.

8. Fight Night: The Million-Dollar HeistPeacock limited series

Kevin Hart, Samuel L. Jackson, Taraji P. Henson, Chloe Bailey, Don Cheadle, and Terrence Howard star in this story based upon iHeartRadio’s Fight Night podcast, which chronicles the October 1970 night when Muhammad Ali returned to boxing, and “Chicken Man” (Hart) pulled off a historical heist during a party full of ultra-wealthy post-fight patrons. The brazen crime spree then became a longwinded headache for J.D. Hudson (Cheadle), who also helped protect Ali on his way to the ring and was one of Atlanta PD’s first Black detectives. Let’s hope that Hudson enjoyed a long vacation at some point because he was tasked with investigating a multi-million-dollar crime spree.

7. Dark Winds – AMC series streaming on AMC Plus and Netflix

This George R.R. Martin and Robert Redford-produced crime drama qualifies as a sleeper series that has maintained an enthused audience, but their numbers have swiftly grown over the past month with the series now streaming on Netflix. The show is based upon Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee books, in which 1970s Navajo cops (at a remote area near Monument Valley) confronted by a series of violent crimes that threaten to shatter established beliefs. Writers, cast, and crew are all majority Native American and ensure authenticity to stories of Indigenous people and communities, and the devotees will be able to enjoy a third season in 2025.

6. Beetlejuice – Warner Bros. movie streaming on Max

Michael Keaton’s juice is most certainly loose again after Jenna Ortega’s Astrid said those fateful words. This sequel’s opening weekend was wildly successful and has already surpassed the original’s box-office total, so do not be surprised if a third film is eventually announced (and here’s a damn fine idea for how that could go well). Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara reprise their role, and their chemistry (and that of director Tim Burton) is still flowing with Keaton like nobody’s business. Do we need to shout, “It’s Showtime!” to encourage you to revisit the original film? Done.

5. IndustryHBO series

This series, which also stars Myha’la, Marisa Abela, Ken Leung, and the newly installed Kit Harington, has received plentiful comparisons to Euphoria due to the off-hours debauchery on display, but the third season is leveling up with more intricate and complex arcs for its impressively disastrous characters. Last week, Harington was revealed by the show runners to be the mastermind behind a scene that manages to at once be both salacious and heartwarming, and that doesn’t even begin to touch what’s going on with these characters in the workplace setting. Get in there and find out why audiences are growing more addicted to this show with each passing season.

4. The Perfect CoupleNetflix series

Streaming service highlights are colliding with Nicole Kidman adding a combo-The White Lotus/Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery-style plot to her current collection of TV shows. This presumably limited series stars Kidman as the matriarch of a wealthy Nantucket family, whose expansive Nantucket beach home is about to become a wedding destination, but the weekend becomes derailed when the estate becomes a crime scene. If you need a slightly more unsettling streaming story also starring Kidman content revolving around a Kidman character, Nine Perfect Strangers will do quite nicely on Hulu. That show will receive a second season, although The Perfect Couple remains a limited series until Netflix declares otherwise.

3. Emily In ParisNetflix series

Due to a split season, this Darren Star series is now returning for the back half of the fourth season, and the consolation prize for the wait time is this: Emily is going on holiday. First, she’ll attempt to ski and then she will head to Rome. One of these adventures goes much better than the other, and of course, this presents a question that must be asked: Who is Emily, if she’s not an American in Paris? You’re about to find out. If you are also addicted to Emily’s frothy adventures, don’t fret. I am not sure why I cannot stop watching either, so it’s time to simply accept the fact that this show is addictive despite being a series with zero consequences or substance. Fingers crossed for a spin off, though.

2. The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of PowerAmazon series

This past week was Tom Bombadil Week, which brings some much needed controversy to Middle-earth and Jeff Bezos’ dream of really achieving his own Game of Thrones. Heck, this show might even be the reason for Amazon launching original content in the first place, and fortunately, we got Reacher and Mr. and Mrs. Smith out of the deal, too.

1. Rebel RidgeNetflix film

Aaron Pierre delivers a potentially Bond-making turn in Jeremy Saulnier’s action-conspiracy thriller about an ex-Marine who receives an unwelcome stop from police, who — long story short and to avoid spoilers — messed with the wrong guy. This film carries First Blood vibes but leans more cerebral and does so more successfully than Reacher, which of course is a crowd pleaser on its own merits. The film co-stars Don Johnson, playing another bad cop here (see also HBO’s Watchmen) who ain’t no Sonny Crockett.

Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’ Video Reportedly Cost Compton Businesses Thousands In Lost Revenue, Which They Want The Rapper To Reimburse

Kendrick Lamar has been a long victory lap since his win in the Drake beef. The “Meet The Grahams” rapper’s eye are set on New Orleans thanks to him securing the coveted Apple Music Super Bowl 2025 Halftime Show slot. However, business owners in Compton, California are urging him to handle a mess he supposedly made back home.

According to LA Times’ recent report, Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” video cost several local staples, thousands in lost revenue.

Corina Pleasant of Alma’s Place a popular local establishment, told the outlet that on June 22 she noticed that business slowed down despite having an overflowing parking lot. Pleasant claims that the spectators gathered at the strip mall and nearby courthouse to watch the video being film, which took away slot for potential patrons.

Due to the pandemonium, several business owners argue that they were “forced to shut down operations.” Despite temporarily closing their doors, they were still required to pay staff for their unprofitable shifts. Now, they are requesting that Kendrick Lamar, his production company Pglang, or the city of Compton reimburse them for the day, which they say could’ve been avoided if city officials provided them with advance notice about the music video shoot.

Lil Tjay fans are breathing a sigh of relief. Yesterday (September 13), a viral report claimed that the “Calling My Phone” rapper was named in a federal gang indictment. While Lil Tjay has previously found himself in several legal entanglements, his attorney is proudly announced that the claim is “false.”

In a post shared to her Instagram Stories, Attorney Dawn Florio slammed the news are “false.”

“Despite recent reports, we want to clarify that my client, rap artist Tione Jayden Merritt, professionally known as Lil Tjay, has not been indicted,” read the note. “We are aware of several news outlets that have shared false information regarding his legal matter, and we wish to address these inaccuracies.”

To close the statement, Florio turned her attention to the publications that published the initial unsubstantiated rumor, writing: “We urge all media outlets to exercise caution and ensure proper due diligences before publishing speculative or unfounded claims. Reporting inaccurate information not only damages reputations, but misleads the public.”

Although the firm did not call out the platforms by name, No Jumper was one of the first companies to broadcast the claim. In a now-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter), shared footage of Fox 5‘s coverage of an alleged Bronx, New York criminal organization, Slattery Gang, incorrectly tying the hometown musician to the ongoing case.

Jane’s Addiction Members Perry Farrell And Dave Navarro Were Involved In A Scuffle Onstage Causing The Band’s Show To Abruptly End

Usually the phrase goes, sex, drugs, and rock n roll. However, adrenaline-filled tussles are also an unwritten norm in the scene. Yesterday (September 13), two Jane’s Addiction members put that on full display during their recent show.

As the “Mountain Song” musicians played Boston, Massachusetts’ Leader Bank Pavilion, frontman Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro were involved in a scuffle mid-concert.

In a video captured by concertgoers (viewable here), Farrell appears to hurl a punch at Navarro. Navarro attempts to avoid blows. Shortly after, crew members forcibly separates the two putting an abrupt end to the performance.

Although the Jane’s Addiction, Perry Farrell, nor Dave Navarro haven’t issued a public statement regarding the incident. So fans have begun to flood their Instagram comments to express their concerns over their remaining reunion show dates. The group’s latest post was to acknowledge drummer Stephen Perkins’ birthday (viewable here), but in the comment section followers are discussing the fight.

“My fifth time seeing the OG lineup, and aside from the fisticuffs, you totally crushed it. I’m keeping the good and leaving the bad,” wrote one user.

Instagram

“Perry was a mess all night. Three fourths of the band were on top of their game,” penned another.

Instagram

Others commended Dave for not escalating the situation further. “I was extremely proud of Dave for creating distance, ducking the punch, and staying calm,” chimed another.

‘The Exorcist’: Everything To Know About Mike Flanagan’s ‘Scariest Movie’ He’s Ever Made (Update For September 2024)

exorcist.jpg
Warner Bros.

Mike Flanagan has made some of the spookiest movies in recent years, including Hush, Gerald’s Game, and Ouija: Origin of Evil, which is much better than it has any right being. And that doesn’t even include his TV shows for Netflix like The Haunting of Hill House (forever haunted by the Bent-Neck Lady), The Midnight Club, and Midnight Mass. Flanagan is a proven name, and now he’s able to, in his own words, “make the scariest movie I’ve ever made.”

Flanagan is overseeing a “radical new take” of The Exorcist — widely considered the best horror movie of all-time — for Blumhouse. Here’s everything we know about the film, including the plot, cast, and release date.

Plot

Back in 2021, Universal Pictures and Peacock vomited up $400 million for the rights to The Exorcist franchise, including a planned trilogy overseen by director David Gordon Green. That plan lasted all of one movie: 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, which no one liked and no one saw (at least Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair got paid). So, a new idea was hatched: hand The Exorcist reigns over to Mike Flanagan and his track record of horror movie quality.

Flanagan’s untitled The Exorcist reimagining (not a reboot, but a reimagining) is described as “an all-new story set in The Exorcist universe.” It’s not a direct sequel to the original, and supposedly “charts a new course” for the franchise.

The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold and terrifying within its universe,” Flanagan said the project was announced. “Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting.” Blumhouse founder Jason Blum added, “Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans, and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse. I immediately responded to Mike’s new take on the world of The Exorcist and can’t wait for audiences to experience it.”

Earlier this month, Flanagan told The Hollywood Reporter that when it comes to finding a new angle for The Exorcist, “we aren’t making this easy on ourselves. But I’ve always felt that there’s no point in going into a franchise or into a property that monolithic unless there’s something new you can bring.” He “aggressively” chased The Exorcist, with its risky mix of religion and demons, because “I was convinced I had something that I could add. This is an opportunity to do something that I believe has never been done within the franchise — something that honors what came before it but isn’t built on nostalgia. I really just saw an opportunity to make the scariest movie I’ve ever made. I know expectations are high. No one’s more intimidated than I am.”

If it’s good, Flanagan will be hailed as a savior of a fledgling horror movie property. If it’s not, well, at least the Catholic church is notoriously chill…

Cast

There’s no confirmed cast for The Exorcist reimagining yet, but considering it’s a Mike Flanagan joint, expect to see some combination of Kate Siegel (who is also his wife), Katie Parker, Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, Samantha Sloyan, Annabeth Gish, Rahul Kohli, and/or Friday Night Lights legend Zach Gilford. Is it asking too much for a reunion with Oculus star Karen Gillan?

Release Date

Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist hits theaters on March 13, 2026, the same month as Bill Hader’s The Cat in the Hat. Now there’s a spooky double feature.
