Von Miller Is Getting Sent ‘Boxes On Boxes On Boxes’ Of Toilet Paper From Bills Fans

The Buffalo Bills made a major splash this offseason when they went out and acquired former All-Pro defensive lineman Von Miller. With the team’s path to a Super Bowl including quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, and Joe Burrow, the Bills decided they needed to bolster their pass rush, and there was no better example of that than by trading for Miller from the Los Angeles Rams and subsequently giving him a 6-year deal worth up to $120 million.

In addition to his prowess as a pass rusher, Miller is one of the league’s more unique personalities, which makes him a fun match with Bills fans, who are known for being … well, let’s call them a little different, but in a really good way. An example of this came when Miller recently said the quality of toilet paper in the team’s dormitories during training camp wasn’t up to part. And then…

“The people of Buffalo, the people of Rochester, and Bills fans in general are great,” Miller said. “I remember the last time I was up here, I said something about the toilet paper, and four days later, I got all types of toilet paper, just in the mail, and wipes, and plant-free wipes from all types of fans. I just put ’em in the locker room, it was great.”

Miller went on to say he’s gotten “boxes on boxes on boxes” of toilet paper and wipes from Bills fans. Congratulations to every player on Buffalo’s roster on the development.

Can We Talk About WTF ‘Mayans M.C’ Is Doing With The Show’s Worst Character Ahead Of Season 5?

FX’s Mayans M.C. has gone through a lot of tweaks over four seasons. EZ Reyes has moved towards darkness (even though he’s arguably doing what’s necessary with his coup) sooner than expected, if one compares his (incomparable) journey to that of Jax Teller. Meanwhile, Angel is moving towards the light (and not too spiritually far away from Clayton Cardenas’ dream of nut farm territory), all while the ensemble cast has further expanded (some might say too much), and it’s grown difficult to keep track of some individual threads. The Kurt Sutter era of the show is in the rearview mirror with Elgin James now hitting his groove as showrunner, which means that stories have become less about the drug business and more about the club’s dynamics.

There are pros and cons to that shift, but the fans are digging it, and Season 5 will happen (via SDCC/Deadline). War is certain between clubs, and that’s the key focus. Yet I must draw attention to an over-the-top development that could turn into a throwaway scene, even though it was so “out there,” especially for a character who hasn’t seen much love from the writers. The show gifted Emily Galindo with the ^^ above ^^ moment. This hair-dye-soaked freakout has nothing to do with Rudy Giuliani (whew). Rather, it’s spun from the soapiest moments of biker-fueled drama. And I want to love it, so very much.

I actually would love it as a standalone scene about a character that I knew nothing about, but I don’t love the way that Mayans M.C. built up to this scene for Emily.

Because geez, I’ve been thinking about this for weeks and need to exorcise it: the hair-dye situation says a lot to anyone who’s colored their own hair (and I’m guessing that most women have tried it at least once). And no woman would be doing it like Emily did unless their sanity has reached a breaking point. The scene says a lot about a character, some character, and this should be very compelling — yes, it should.

The problem is this: Emily has easily become the show’s worst (or rather, most poorly written) character. Actually, the situation is worse than that — people stopped caring (no love or hate) about Emily Galindo and have been wondering why she gets any screen time at all. And that’s tragic, largely because Emily once seemed poised to become a force. Very early on, Sutter declared that she was definitely not a Gemma but pointed towards the inception of similar energy, and Sarah Bolger seemed jazzed about her character’s prospects, both with Emily’s cartel family dealings and in EZ’s ear.

Yet something bizarre happened: Emily became obsessed with something called an “agripark,” and I guess that happened because this universe can’t resist a shady real estate deal, but the writers did her dirty. This has little to do with Sarah Bolger’s abilities as an actress. She was fantastic (and acclaimed) on Showtime’s The Tudors, after all, and this dye mess had such potential. It’s a visceral scene, with the slippery chemicals, the crunching of the plastic gloves before she gave up and started to make a larger disaster. Her internal self, and all of that fear, leaked into her outside appearance.

Clearly, Emily was righteously f*cking up the whole hair situation. It’s all over her face and hands and shoulders, and that stuff will not be coming off anytime soon. Never mind that all of Kentucky will realize that there’s something very suspicious about Emily because she’s going to have inky junk all over her body. These are the frantic moves of a desperate person, who’s likely afflicted by some PTSD and feels a compulsion to erase herself. An investigator played by Cheri Oteri (!) spooked her. Emily’s (to be generous) an accessory to murder, and EZ could go down, too. And she’s on the run from her husband, Miguel, who tried to kill her by drugging her and starting to drown her in a bathtub before regret set in, and then Emily got the hell out of dodge.

All of this appears to set up Emily’s return to Santo Padre. Emily fled in a separate direction when Miguel’s cartel collapsed, which conveniently led him into the desert while Danny Pino revved up for his stunning directorial debut. I hope Danny gets to direct more episodes, and I hope that Emily’s story becomes more interesting with or without Miguel, but at this point, her character might be boring beyond storytelling redemption. This is where I grow a little angry. That scene where Miguel tried to kill her set up Emily at her most vulnerable, with nudity that didn’t feel sexual but sad and empty. It should have made viewers feel for her, and we should have been invested every time that we saw her on the run during this past season. Yet sadly, the show dropped the ball on Emily years ago.

In the end, the above scene crashes when it could have been a hit, rather than merely absurd. It does make me wish Mayans M.C. accomplished more with its female characters. Now I understand that this show is not Sons of Anarchy, but there really aren’t any women who are as influential as Gemma or as pivotal as Tara or as sympathetic as Donna or Lyla. Instead, Adelita began as a rebellion leader and has since veered away. Letty’s been saved by going off the rails after Coco’s death, but her upswing seems to be happening because she has a chartreuse-colored car (?); this same car helped Letty pull Hope away from turning to drugs again. Don’t even get me started on Nails/the baby or how EZ shot his ex-girlfriend, Gaby, to protect Angel.

No female character, though, has been through as much weak development as Emily Thomas Galindo, which is a real bummer. She was EZ’s college love, and the writers toyed with a star-crossed exes arc before fully detonating Emily’s potential as an intriguing presence. We should be looking forward to Emily — who let out one hell of an agonized scream after Miguel semi-ominously (after probably having her sister killed) told her to come home, that she is forgiven, and he has their son — coming back to hell on earth and doing something about it. Instead, it’s hard to care about where she goes next, or even to know how the show wants us to feel about her. I suspect that the writers will kill her off soon, and man, what a potentially impactful scene wasted. I still dig the idea of it, but it feels unearned by the character or the writers. I’ll still hold out hope and pour out some conditioner (Emily will need it) while waiting for Season 5.

FX’s ‘Mayans M.C.’ can be streamed on Hulu.

MTV Unveils The First Batch Of 2022 VMAs Performers, Featuring J Balvin, Khalid, Anitta, And More

MTV Video Music Awards season is approaching. Last month, MTV unveiled the full list of nominations for the 2022 VMAs, which are set to go down on August 28. Now, what the broadcast will look like is starting to become more clear, as the first set of artists set to perform on the show was revealed today: Anitta, J Balvin, Marshmello with Khalid, and Panic! At The Disco. The show usually has a lot more performers than just a handful, so this first artist drop is surely just the start of what should shape up to be a worthwhile lineup.

It could be an even bigger night for Anitta than just her time on stage, as she’s also nominated for Best Latin with “Envolver.” In that category, she’s up against fellow performer Balvin and Skrillex’s “In Da Getto,” Balvin’s sole nomination. Meanwhile, Panic! At The Disco has a Best Alternative nomination with “Viva Las Vengeance.”

Elsewhere on the nomination side of things, Kendrick Lamar, Jack Harlow, and Lil Nas X are tied for having the most, as they’ve each racked up seven nods for this year’s show.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

After much speculation as to when Bobby would fully dive back into the music, Bodboy is here. The 9-song record features longtime collaborator Rowdy Rebel and Fat Tony. Though “Hoochie Daddy” may have the people split, there is plenty of vintage Bobby chaos to balance out everyone’s palates.

Shitty Boyz

Contrary to what the name could convey, the talented Shitty Boyz are far from waste. Trifecta 2 is a 14-song buffet, with guest chefs Tae Retro and Tri.

Singles/Videos

Piers James — “Cha Ching”

Piers James, like many rappers, is motivated by the dollar signs. “Cha Ching” is the quintessential soundtrack for cashing your check at the bank on pay day. Turn that bass up.

YBN Nahmir — “Where I’m From”

YBN Nahmir wears his hometown flag in “Where I’m From,” a rap version of a virtual tour of Birmingham, Alabama. However, this isn’t for the tourists; Nahmir keeps it very honest about the tougher sides of his area. “We got looters and shooters, we got cops and robbers / we got strippers and scammers, we got the hoes that be plottin’.”

Big Boss Vette ft. Flo Milli and Saucy Santana — “Snatched (Remix)”

Big Boss Vette, Flo Milli, and Saucy Santana are beaming with confidence on the “Snatched (Remix).” As “He wanna dive in it” repeats in the background, the rappers assert their dominance over men through their sexual prowess. “Y’all trickin’ for dollars, my legs go up for millions.”

Rob Markman — “100 Losses”

Accredited journalist and rapper Rob Markman doesn’t want to run away from reality. “100 Losses” is a vulnerable outpouring of not only his personal setbacks, but also what has happened to our culture. Through it all, he has no intentions of giving up. “Win by all means, I don’t care what it cost us / Shoulda, coulda, woulda only thing that’s gon’ haunt us.”

Black Soprano Family — “Times Is Rough”

Benny The Butcher has seen much success over the last few years, and has brought along his Black Soprano Family along the way. “Times Is Rough” is laced by DJ Premier, and with help from Heem and Rick Hyde, Benny reflects on his come up. The video finds all three rapping in an NYC park, surrounded by bottles of Bel-Air, and riding bikes.

Dustystaytrue — “Ironman”

Dustystaytrue quite literally surrounds himself by hell in the “Ironman” video, crooning about people changing up on him as flames burn in the room he sits in. Ultimately, the artist realizes he has to spread his wings and make his way through life alone. “I’m just trying to be free.

Noodah05 x Rylo Rodriguez — “Tameka”

The “Tameka” visual finds Noodah05 and Rylo Rodriguez struggling with matters of the heart while trying to hold down the fort. They ultimately want their women back, but know that it’s tough to be who they need to be when they have to be so much else to other people. They rap alongside their crews, almost coming off as venting sessions with friends.

Kevin Spacey Must Pay $31 Million To ‘House Of Cards’ Producers After Being Fired From The Show

Kevin Spacey has been quietly trying to toss out his $31 million lawsuit from MRC, the production company behind House Of Cards, but this week, Entertainment Weekly has reported that a judge ordered the actor to pay the company for their losses after they were forced to remove him from the sixth season of the acclaimed series.

Spacey played Frank Underwood on the hit Netflix series before he was fired due to a number of sexual assault allegations from young men, including then-14-year-old Anthony Rapp. The allegations caused MRC to investigate and eventually terminate all of his acting and producing contracts in 2017. The company claimed that Spacey owed them millions in lost profits after his allegations.

The actor has denied any and all allegations about him, though earlier this year he was charged with four counts of sexual assault in the UK. Since then, he has been dropped from a movie about Genghis Khan. He is expected to stand trial next year.

For now, it seems like the actor will have to shell out $30.9 million to MRC, who are reportedly “pleased” with the court’s ruling. Despite the allegations, Spacey has been able to get roles in various non-American projects, but no studio over here seems to want to risk being involved with the actor. He has an upcoming role in the Italian film The Man Who Drew God alongside Faye Dunaway.

Biden task force reunites 400 children with their families separated by cruel border policy

The United States espouses noble ideals and has worked for more than two centuries to make its way toward them. It’s always been an uneven process, however, and sometimes we stumble—or get violently shoved—backward.

The “zero tolerance” policy for handling migrant families was one of those times. The policy, unofficially piloted by the Trump administration in 2017 and officially enacted in May of 2018, forced children and parents to be separated instead of being detained together while awaiting asylum decisions.

During those two years, thousands of migrant children at the U.S.-Mexico border were taken from their families with no notice, sometimes torn straight from the parents’ arms, and sent away to unknown locations around the country. Thousands of parents and caregivers were deported with no idea where their children were or if they’d ever see them again. Some were toddlers and preschoolers. We read horror stories of children screaming while being taken away, their parents frantic but helpless to do anything about it.

These were not all people trying to enter the U.S. illegally. Many were going through the legal asylum-seeking process. According to NBC, lawyers estimated that more than two-thirds of the parents and caregivers were deported, leaving thousands of children behind.

After intense pressure from human rights advocates around the world, President Trump signed an executive order ending the policy in June 2018. But the monstrous mess was already made. Thousands of families had been separated with no recourse and thousands of children thrown into foster homes in an unfamiliar country with no warning. There’s no other way to describe it but cruel and unthinkable.

And if that weren’t inhumane enough, after a federal judge ordered that the children be reunited with their families within 30 days, it came to light that the administration had enacted the policy with no clear method of keeping track of which kids were separated and no plans to find and reunite them with their families. There was simply no way to make it happen that quickly.

One of the first things President Biden did after his inauguration was to address this crisis directly through an executive order. On February 2, 2021, he formed the Interagency Task Force on the Reunification of Families and tasked it with “identifying all children who were separated from their families at the United States-Mexico border between January 20, 2017, and January 20, 2021, in connection with the operation of the Zero-Tolerance Policy” and “to the greatest extent possible, facilitating and enabling the reunification of each of the identified children with their families.”

Michelle Brané, executive director of the task force, told NBC News that the Biden administration has now successfully reunited 400 migrant children impacted by the zero tolerance policy with their families. It has been a daunting challenge, considering the lack of record-keeping, and there are still more families who remain separated. But it’s at least a step forward from that enormous leap back.

The children’s parents and caregivers are being brought back to the U.S. and given temporary legal status to be able to live and work in the U.S. for three years. They are also allowed to bring dependent family members with them. Lawyers are pushing for the families to be given permanent status, but the Biden administration has not agreed on that yet.

While this is good news, we also must remember that these children’s lives are changed forever and the trauma they have endured at the hands of the U.S. government will not easily be overcome. These kids were taken from the only security many of them had ever known—their family—and sent to live with strangers in a strange land. It’s an unfathomable thing to imagine as a parent.

Immigration and asylum are complicated issues, but there are some lines we simply do not cross when dealing with challenging issues. Tearing kids from their parents’ arms and sending them away to an undisclosed place for an indefinite amount of time in an unfamiliar country is a line we should never have crossed. It was cruel to both the parents and the children, and purposefully so.

While we can’t undo the damage already done, let’s celebrate the fact that some of those wrongs are beginning to be righted, and let’s ensure that nothing like that is ever done in our name again.

‘Repetition teaches the donkey’: Fun father and son duo share their favorite Arabic sayings

In 2016, Danny Dubbaneh and his brother Jimmy started Z&Z, a Middle Eastern foods company just outside of Washington, D.C., to share the “bold flavors of za’atar with the rest of the world” as well as Middle Eastern culture and hospitality.

Za’atar is a spice mix that can be used as a rub for chicken, beef, lamb or fish. It’s also sprinkled over hummus, labneh or baba ganoush.

Danny created a YouTube channel Z&Z TV where his family shares the joys of Middle Eastern culture. On August 2, Danny released a popular video of himself and his father, affectionately known as Baba, explaining some popular Arabic idioms.

The video is great because it shows how when we learn new sayings they open up a new way of seeing the world that we may not have considered.

“My favorite parts of learning any language are idioms of what some people call sayings or proverbs,” Danny explains in the video. “Idioms can often give you quite a bit of insight into another culture, especially if they’re commonly used.”

Here are a few of their favorite sayings.

“Go tile the ocean” — It’s basically a way of saying “get lost.”

“Repetition teaches the donkey” — Donkeys aren’t the smartest animals, but even with some repetition, they can learn a thing or two.

“Stretch your legs only as far as your blanket extends” — Don’t overextend yourself, financially.

“Swallowed a radio” — Is a phrase to describe someone who won’t stop talking.

“Light blooded” — Someone who is fun and easy-going and who you enjoy being around.

Want to live longer? Science says to read more books.

There are few joys greater than curling up and reading a good book. The best books are the ones that are so engrossing you forget that you’re reading. Then, when you take a break, you look and see you’ve blown through 50 pages without realizing it.

However, there are a lot of us who wish that we read more often, but we watch TV instead because it takes less mental energy. But the benefits of reading seem to be far greater.

Reading keeps our brains sharper as we age and, according to research, people who read live longer than those who don’t.

A 2016 study published in the journal Social Science & Medicine asked 3,635 participants who were over 50 years old about their reading habits and monitored them over a 12-year period. The researchers split the participants into three categories: those who don’t read at all, those who read less than 3.5 hours a week and those who read more than 3.5 hours a week.

The results were astonishing.

People who read more than 3.5 hours a week were found to live 23 months longer than those who didn’t read at all.

“Compared to non-book readers, book readers had a 4-month survival advantage,” at the age when 20% of their peers passed away. “Book readers also experienced a 20% reduction in risk of mortality over the 12 years of follow up compared to non-book readers.”

Those who read less than 3.5 hours a week were 17% less likely to die than those who never crack open a book.

“People who report as little as a half-hour a day of book reading had a significant survival advantage over those who did not read,” the senior author, Becca R. Levy, a professor of epidemiology at Yale, said according to The New York Times. “And the survival advantage remained after adjusting for wealth, education, cognitive ability and many other variables.”

The researchers also noted that reading books will help you live longer than sticking to newspapers and magazines.

“Further, our analyses demonstrated that any level of book reading gave a significantly stronger survival advantage than reading periodicals,” the researchers wrote. “This is a novel finding, as previous studies did not compare types of reading material; it indicates that book reading rather than reading, in general, is driving a survival advantage.”

Why is it that those who read live longer than those who don’t?

The researchers at Yale speculate that there are two reasons why reading books has such a positive effect on longevity. The first is that books require “deep reading,” or the process of engaging with the book and understanding its internal context. The second is the emotional connection that books help us develop to empathize with characters and their stories.

Together, these two processes help us better understand the world and enhance our survival skills.

The great news about this study is that it shows that all it takes to live a significantly longer life is to read about 30 minutes a day. Plus, not only will you live longer, but you’ll also be happier as well.

Because there are few things that bring greater joy than reading a book and sharing someone else’s thoughts for a while.

Collector finds locks of hair in a book from the 1800s and then discovers who the people were

In modern times we memorialize our loved ones by saving old photographs, holding onto their jewelry, or keeping their ashes in an urn. But, according to Artsy, before we had photographs of people to remember them by, people often saved their hair.

It was impossible to save someone’s rotting flesh before modern preservation techniques were developed, plus it’s pretty disgusting. So hair was the only part of the body that one could keep. Human hair can retain its color and texture for years after someone has passed, so it’s a durable material to turn into remembrance art.

“The keeping and saving of hair for future use in jewelry or other commemorative craft (such as wreaths) was common,” Karen Bachmann wrote, according to Artsy. The practice was common in Victorian England and it was brought across the pond to America’s frontier.

“The Victorians were also famously sentimental,” Joanna Ebenstein, founder of New York’s Morbid Anatomy Library and Gift Shop told Artsy. “Hair art, which could be used to commemorate the living or dead beloved, perfectly merges the fashion for mourning and sentimentality.”

TikTok user Christina Dyer, who runs The Dyer Ghoul House, which specializes in gothic content, went viral recently after a video she shared on the platform received more than 1.9 million views. The video shows her opening a book from the 1800s that she had purchased, only to find around eight folded pieces of paper with names and dates containing pieces of hair.

“I pretty much have a whole family!” Dyer wrote in a subsequent video.

@thedyerghoulhouse

Question is what do i do with them? 🫣 #victorianhair #victorianmourning

A lot of people thought the hair was taken for nefarious reasons. “Me thinking it’s trophies from a serial killer in the 1800s,” ultraoldsoul commented.

However, multiple people remarked that it was a common practice for people to save their loved ones’ hair and turn it into a keepsake. “That was a common thing to do in that times, to preserve that person’s memory, or they gifted a piece of their hair as a sign of affection,” Jennifer Marie commented.

After the video went viral, Dyer shared another one showing what she planned to do with the hair. “I was drawn to a lock of the mother’s hair, so of course I framed it,” Dyer wrote. In the video, she shares a frame with “Mother 1862” written on it. “Now I need to decide what to do with the others,” she adds.

@thedyerghoulhouse

Replying to @she_horror Update! 🕊 #victorianmourning #victorianhair

After finding the hair, Dyer did some research and discovered the names of three of the people whose hair was in the book.

“Here are three of the people whose hair I found inside the antique book,” she wrote in a follow-up video. The good news was that they all lived long lives for the era. “Walter died aged 78, Constance 77, and Lawrence 57. If my sources are correct!” she wrote.

@thedyerghoulhouse

Replying to @elviratsquirrel Constance is a beauty. 🕊 #victorianmourning #victorianera #victorianhair

It’s tantalizing to wonder if the people whose hair she found have any idea where their last mortal remains turned up. However, they probably would have a really hard time understanding the internet and what it means to “go viral.”

The wonderful thing is that—although some may find it a bit morbid—Dyer is treating the hair with respect, just as the person who placed it in the book intended. Plus, it’s always wise to curry favor with the dead.
