What To Watch: Our Picks For The Ten Movies We Think You Should Stream This Weekend

Each week our staff of film and TV experts surveys the entertainment landscape to select the ten best new/newish movies available for you to stream at home. We put a lot of thought into our selections, and our debates on what to include and what not to include can sometimes get a little heated and feelings may get hurt, but so be it, this is an important service for you, our readers. With that said, here are our selections for this week.

10. (tie) On the Count of Three (VOD)

three
ANNAPURNA

Jerrod Carmichael is having a moment, garnering all the praise for his revealing and powerful HBO special (Rothaniel, watch it again!), a great turn as SNL host, and now, for the release of his festival fave narrative directorial debut, On The Count Of Three. But, of course, you knew Carmichael was a force from his previous specials and The Carmichael Show. You’re just happy to see everyone else catch up and, with this film, get the chance to see Carmichael flex his dramatic muscles opposite Christopher Abbott as two friends trying to get the most out of the last moments before they execute each other as a part of a suicide pact. Track it down on your VOD service of choice.

10. (tie) Cha Cha Real Smooth (Apple TV Plus)

CHA-CHA.webp
APPLE

Everybody clap your hands for Cha Cha Real Smooth, the second feature from writer and director Cooper Raiff. He also stars in the comedy-drama as a recent college graduate with an aimless life until he finds a job (bar/bat mitzvah “party starter”) and friends (a suburban mom played by Dakota Johnson and her autistic teenage daughter). It sounds like Indie Movie Trope Overload, but Cha Cha Real Smooth is a real charmer, with a heartfelt performance from Johnson. Watch it on Apple TV Plus.

10. (tie) Jerry and Marge Go Large (Paramount Plus)

cranston
PARAMOUNT PLUS

Bryan Cranston and Annette Bening play a married couple who discover a loophole in the state lottery and use it to win millions and millions of dollars. There should be more movies like this. Hundreds of them, probably. But this is a good start. Watch it on Paramount Plus.

9. The Man From Toronto (Netflix)

toronto
NETFLIX

Kevin Hart, Woody Harrelson, and Kaley Cuoco team up for a comedy about mistaken identity and assassins and probably a few other things, but mostly those. The fuller description looks like this: A loser from Pennsylvania wakes up on vacation and is somehow assumed to be a world-famous contract killer. Hijinks, presumably, ensue. Watch it on Netflix.

8. 13 Lives (Amazon Prime)

13 LIVES
AMAZON

A few years ago, a boys’ soccer team got stuck in a cave in Thailand and the story of their impossible rescue gripped the world. So, naturally, director Ron Howard has made a move about it. Colin Farrell, Viggo Mortenson, and Joel Edgerton play rescue divers called in to save the kids and judging from the trailer, it looks like they’ve all nailed the claustrophobic terror of navigating a flooded underground tunnel that could kill you at any moment. Watch it on Amazon Prime.

7. They/Them (Peacock)

THEY
PEACOCK

The setting: a summer conversion camp run by a group of weirdos. The villain: Kevin Bacon, a camp counselor hoping to scare the gay out of a bunch of Queer kids. The plot: a murderer on a killing rampage deep in the woods who’s targeting a bunch of kids questioning their identity thanks to the out-of-touch adults in their lives. In other words, this is your worst Gen Z nightmare. Watch it on Peacock.

6. Beavis and Butt-Head Do The Universe (Paramount Plus)

BEAVIS
PARAMOUNT

Beavis and Butt-head debuted on MTV something like 30 years ago and is still, somehow, against truly staggering odds, still going strong, with this movie sending them to the cosmos and other projects in the works down the line, too. It’s good news, to be sure, but please do imagine telling someone from like 1997 that these two would still be around in 2022 and would be going to space. It would be almost as shocking as the thing where time travel was apparently invented. Watch it on Paramount Plus.

5. Anything’s Possible (Amazon Prime)

possible
AMAZON

Billy Porter directs a sweet coming-of-age story centered around a trans high school senior named Kelsa who is attempting to navigate… well, all of that. It’s all very sweet and very heartfelt and very Gen Z and it could make for some nice weekend movie if you’re feeling up for a little cry. Who isn’t, sometimes, you know? Watch it on Amazon Prime.

4. The Bob’s Burgers Movie (Hulu)

bobs
FOX

Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard insisted on The Bob’s Burgers Movie getting a theatrical release instead of being plopped directly on streaming. He was right to do so: The Bob’s Burgers Movie is, like the show itself, an absolute delight with lovely animation, fun fan service, and catchy songs (it’s also Disney’s first hand-drawn 2D animated movie in over a decade). If you didn’t catch it in theaters, however, you can now enjoy “Sunny Side Up Summer” at home. Might I suggest pairing it with an Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weenie Yellow Polka-Dot Zucchini Burger. Watch it on Hulu.

3. The Gray Man (Netflix)

GREY
NETFLIX

The Gray Man is: Trash-staches. Ryan Gosling as a himbo assassin. Psychotic Chris Evans. A spy thriller. An on-the-run adventure. Trains. Butt-shots. Ana de Armas with a bob cut. And action courtesy of the Russo brothers. In other words, The Gray Man is a hell of a good time and a worthy blockbuster movie night for those wanting to stay on the couch. Watch it on Netflix.

2. Luck (Apple TV Plus)

luck
APPLE

John Lasseter helped build Pixar into a dominant animation brand and now he’s trying to bring the same magic to Apple with Luck, a movie about an unlucky young girl who goes on a whimsical adventure to try to turn her fortunes around. It’s got the starpower (Simon Pegg, Jane Fonda, Pixar staple John Ratzenberger) and the financial backing from Apple, so the big question remaining is whether it has the same spark as those other films he created a few decades ago. Only one way to find out. Watch it on Apple TV Plus.

1. Prey (Hulu)

prey.webp
HULU

The Predator franchise was desperate for a new vision following the lackluster response to, well, every Predator movie since 1990’s Predator 2. Enter: Prey. The Hulu film follows a Comanche warrior (played by Amber Midthunder) who has to protect her tribe from an alien predator. Prey gets back to what made the original Predator a classic — and thankfully ignores everything that made Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem unwatchable. Watch it on Hulu.

Amanda Seyfried Is A Struggling Fan Of ‘The Bachelor’

Celebrities aren’t just like us, but some of them indulge in reality television. Amanda Seyfried might be a talented, prestigious Emmy-nominee now (if she doesn’t win for The Dropout I will become the Joker), but she can’t help but indulge in trashy television. Seyfried is a member of Bachelor Nation, which means… she watches The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, and probably its spin-offs including Bachelor in Paradise.

Seyfried discussed being a reluctant fan of the long-running reality dating franchise on SiriusXM’s “The Jess Cagle Show” with hosts Jess Cagle and Julia Cunningham.“I’m writing my thesis right now,” Seyfried joked about the series.

Co-host Julia Cunningham said that she saw Seyfried at one of the live finales (the one for the dreaded Nick Viall’s season in 2017, to be exact). “I remember,” Seyfried said dramatically. “I remember.” It does not sound like it was a fond memory.

“God, I struggle with it more and more each year,” she said. “I really do. This formula works, it does, but it hasn’t evolved quick enough for me to feel, you know, guilty-free when I watch it. But at the same time, this is really embarrassing, I fell asleep last night so I don’t know what happened.” Seyfried added that she is “most passionate” about the show’s decision to have two Bachelorettes for the current season of The Bachelorette. “I also love looking for the authenticity that you so rarely see,” Seyfried added.

When Seyfried was asked which Bachelor she would date, she said “no one” at first. But then she decided on Ben Higgins, who was the Bachelor for season 20, which aired in 2016. “Yes, he told two women he loved them, because he did!,” she said.

An Iconic ‘Breaking Bad’ Set Was Recreated On ‘Better Call Saul’ Thanks To A ‘Breaking Bad’ Fan Tour

Breaking Bad was filmed on location in Albuquerque, New Mexico (32nd in population, number one in statues dedicated to fictional meth-makers!), but one of the show’s most iconic props now resides in Los Angeles. The Krystal Ship — the RV used by Walter White and Jesse Pinkman to cook meth on the go — is part of the Sony Pictures Studios tour, along with a Jeopardy! podium and the Ectomobile from Ghostbusters.

From the outside, the Krystal Ship still looks the same as it did on Breaking Bad. But inside, it’s “completely gutted,” set designer Ashley Marsh told Variety. This proved to be an issue for the latest episode of Better Call Saul, which was partially (and thrillingly) set during the Breaking Bad timeline, but Marsh had a time-consuming solution.

To recreate that set for Better Call Saul, Marsh “religiously rewatched Breaking Bad” and took “8,000 screen grabs.” With careful attention to detail, the team had to replace every beaker, tub of methylamine, round-bottom flask, and more. Everything we see inside the RV on Better Call Saul was new.

Marsh got in touch with Frank Sandoval, an Albuquerque resident who runs Breaking Bad RV Tours. “After signing an ‘ironclad NDA,’ Sandoval was happy to lend some parts of his Bounder — which shuttles tourists around Albuquerque to Breaking Bad locations — to the Better Call Saul team,” according to Variety. Even the window coverings on Saul are the same ones that appear on Breaking Bad. It’s a small detail that most shows wouldn’t bother with. But most shows don’t get turned into statues, either.

Noted Running Enthusiast/Putin Appeaser Josh Hawley Is Proud To Be The Only Senator To Vote Against Admitting Sweden And Finland Into NATO

Josh Hawley is his own man. And he’s so desperate for people to realize that he titled his upcoming book Manhood, which really had people laughing when it was announced just days after footage of him running out of the Capitol like his ass was on fire emerged. On Wednesday, Mediaite reports that the hypocrite of a contrarian decided to run his own way again when he was the sole senator who voted against admitting Sweden and Finland into NATO.

At the conclusion of the vote — the total tally of which was 95-1 (Rand Paul—whose own neighbor once beat him up, seemingly due to proximity—simply said “present” when asked to vote… which isn’t a vote) — Hawley’s fellow senators took aim at the wannabe hotshot from Missouri, who considers himself a bit of a rule-breaker. Even before the vote, and despite Mitch McConnell’s statement that “If any senator is looking for a defensible excuse to vote ‘No,’ I wish them good luck,” Hawley made it known that he’d be voting in the negative.

“Finland and Sweden want to expand NATO because it is in their national security interest to do so,” he said ahead of the vote, according to Mediaite. “And fair enough. The question that should properly be before us, however, is, is it in the United States’ interest to do so?”

Ninety-five of his fellow senators seemed to think so, but when has Hawley ever followed the crowd? (Especially when that crowd is a group of violent insurrectionists who have breached the Capitol.) The typically intolerable Ted Cruz told Politico that Hawley was “mistaken” to have voted the way he did. “We don’t beat China by retreating from the rest of the world,” said Cruz. “We beat China by standing with our allies against our enemies.”

Meanwhile, Marco Rubio actually penned an op-ed for The Washington Examiner, the title of which pretty much said it all “A stronger NATO allows America to focus on the threat of Communist China.”

For his part, post-vote, Hawley went running to his safe place: The Tucker Carlson Show, where he found a like-minded sounding board to talk through his issues with NATO,

Katy Perry Has Apologized To Kim Kardashian For Being Utterly Repulsed By The Idea Of Dating Pete Davidson

Over the past four years or so, Pete Davidson has found himself the apple of many an attractive eye, as he’s been romantically involved with famous figures like Ariana Grande, Kate Beckinsale, Margaret Qualley, and most recently and currently, Kim Kardashian. Davidson’s rich dating history has left some people confused, including Davidson himself, who earlier this year called himself “the diamond in the trash” and said, “There seems to be a curiosity about me, is what my friends tell me. I was trying to figure out how to explain myself to someone because I was doing an interview.”

That curiosity is not something Katy Perry seems to have, as she showed in a recent TikTok video. In the clip, shared last night, Perry plays with the TikTok MASH filter, which automatically picks a dream house, car, number of kids, and lover for her. She had positive reactions to the house and car, but was shell-shocked when she got 6 kids. Then, when Davidson popped up as her lover, her expression became even more pained.

@katyperry

No offense @Kim Kardashian (and Orlando? 🤷🏻‍♀️)

♬ House With A View – Cyn

She offered a bit of an apology to Kardashian (and husband Orlando Bloom) for her apparent Davidson disgust in the post’s caption, writing, “No offense @KimKardashian (and Orlando?).”

Commenters had mixed interpretations of the video. The top comment reads, “CRYING NOT THE DISGUST AT PETE LMAO.” Somebody responded with a different point of view, replying, “It’s not disgust it’s just because he’s dating someone lol. Look at the caption.” Another user wrote, “yea she’s disgusted but she put no offense Kim because she doesn’t wanna be rude.”

Now, we await Kardashian’s perspective, as she has yet to offer a public response to the clip.

Proud mama ferret wants her human to pet babies and isn’t taking no for an answer

Sometimes you come across a video that’s just too sweet not to share. That’s the case with this video of a mama ferret that has recently given birth and wants nothing more than her owner to cuddle with her babies. At first it looks like she’s coming over to her owner’s hand for some pets but she soon starts gently trying to get the human fingers in her mouth to pull them. After a few tries, the ferret is successful and tugs the hand over to her box that looks to be filled with material but then tiny cries can be heard.

It’s full of tiny babies! The person does a quick pat and removes their hand but the ferret is having none of it. She is proud of her babies and she is determined for her human to get a good look at them. I’ve always heard that ferrets are smart creatures. I just had no idea they were also so persistent when it comes to things they want. This mama ferret marched herself right back to her human as if to say “excuse me, we aren’t done here.” It doesn’t take much convincing for the person to give the babies another look.

But even after the human picks up one of the babies and gives it a gentle pat before placing it back with its siblings, the mama ferret didn’t feel like that was sufficient. She came right back again and again to guide the person’s hand to her little box of babies.

It’s safe to say she’s proud of the work she’s done. The babies are adorable and I’m sure she is a good mama.

Creators of cancelled ‘Batgirl’ film issue heartfelt message to fans

It’s a heartbreaking reality for artists that sometimes, you put your heart and soul into something, with full hope that it will resonate and inspire others, only to see that idea vanish into thin air. This can be especially true for those who create professionally and have to deal with many factors outside their own control. And, really, even for those of us who don’t identify as artists, the gut-wrenching disappointment of having a dream snatched away is pretty universal.

But when disappointment strikes, perhaps one of the best things we can do is acknowledge the pain, appreciate the opportunity and move on with grace.

This seems to be the road taken for the creators of the would-be “Batgirl” film, which, on Aug. 2, was officially scrapped by Warner Bros, not to be streamed on any platform. Though several reasons have been allegedly attributed to the surprise decision—such as “poor test screenings”—The Hollywood Reporter noted that the film “was a casualty of new corporate strategy,” where the company opted to take a tax write-down rather than opt for any kind of release of the $90 million movie.

This news came as a shock for DC fans, who had not only been eagerly anticipating Michael Keaton’s return as Batman, but a career comeback for Brendan Fraser as well, not to mention a huge win for representation with Leslie Grace playing the titular role as Barbara Gordon.

Despite this news, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the directing duo behind “Batgirl,” released a heartfelt statement on Instagram that ultimately chose a glass-half-full perspective.

“We are saddened and shocked by the news,” they wrote. “We still can’t believe it. As directors, it is critical that our work be shown to audiences, and while the film was far from finished, we wish that fans all over the world would have had the opportunity to see and embrace the final film themselves. Maybe one day they will insha’Allah.”

The pair went on to thank the ”amazing cast and crew” who “did a tremendous job and worked so hard to bring Batgirl to life. We are forever grateful to have been part of that team.“

Their post ended with: “In any case, as huge fans of Batman since we were little kids, it was a privilege and an honor to have been a part of the DCEU, even if it was for a brief moment. Batgirl For Life.”

Leslie Grace also showed an incredible amount of emotional resilience in her own Instagram post.

“I am proud of the love, hard work and intention all of our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film over 7 months in Scotland. I feel blessed to have worked among absolute greats and forged relationships for a lifetime in the process! To every Batgirl fan – THANK YOU for the love and belief, allowing me to take on the cape and become, as Babs said best, ‘my own damn hero!’” the actress wrote.

Cultivating hope during a time of setbacks isn’t easy. But this was a great example of how it’s done. Odds are we’ll never see what could have been for this version of “Batgirl,” but Arbi, Fallah and Grace have definitely given us a glimpse of her unbeatable courage and optimism nonetheless in their responses.

Johnny Depp And Jeff Beck Are Accused Of Stealing Lyrics From An Incarcerated Man’s Poem

Johnny Depp quickly made his foray back into music before the Amber Heard trial verdict was even handed down in late May by joining his friend Jeff Beck onstage. Shortly after, the pair released an album together, 18. Most of the tracks were covers, but the song “Sad Motherf*ckin’ Parade” appears to take lyrics without credit.

“Hobo Ben” is a song a toast from the mid-’60s by Slim Wilson — a Black poet with an alias due to having been incarcerated — and recorded by Bruce Jackson, and “Sad Motherf*ckin’ Parade” contains lines straight from it. Reported by Rolling Stone, 18 does not credit Wilson or Jackson at all, and Jackson is considering taking legal action.

“The only two lines I could find in the whole piece that [Depp and Beck] contributed are ‘Big time motherf*cker’ and ‘Bust it down to my level,’” Jackson said. “Everything else is from Slim’s performance in my book. I’ve never encountered anything like this. I’ve been publishing stuff for 50 years, and this is the first time anybody has just ripped something off and put his own name on it.”

About the credits that the are given for “Sad Motherf*ckin’ Parade,” Jackson said, “They do not reflect the actual authorship of those lyrics. It’s just not plausible, in my opinion, that Johnny Depp or anybody else could have sat down and crafted those lyrics without almost wholly taking them from some version of my father’s recording and/or book where they appeared.”
