What’s Popular On Streaming Right Now

Multiple times per week, our TV and film experts will list the most important ten streaming selections for you to pop into your queues. We’re not strictly operating upon reviews or accrued streaming clicks (although yes, we’ve scoured the streaming site charts and ratings) but, instead, upon those selections that are really worth noticing amid the churning sea of content. There’s a lot out there, after all, and your time is valuable.

TIE: 10. Black Bird (Apple TV+ series)

Ray Liotta fans, you can get one final fix of the legend with this psychological thriller show, in which he portrays the dad of Taron Egerton’s Jimmy Keene. It’s a tense ride based upon the real-life Keene’s memoir, In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption. If Liotta’s presence isn’t enough to get you onboard (are you a monster, too?), then rest assured that Paul Walter Hauser is the icing on the cake for a project full of compelling performances.

TIE: 10. Resident Evil (Netflix series)

Do you remember much about what happened in those Milla Jovovich-starring movies? Me neither, and the overall critic-and-audience reception for this clunker isn’t great, but this show’s mainly a curiosity, to see if anything involving Umbrella Corporation could possibly ever make sense. The story picks up with Jade Wesker, who’s attempting to track down her sister, fourteen years after the virus’ original outbreak. There are plenty of other undead tales that do it better, and this show probably won’t get a second season, so take that as you will before the short tail runs out.

9. The Umbrella Academy (Netflix series)

This season’s got double the number of Hargreeves siblings from the still-bad dad, Reginald. At this point, the original set is so beloved, and the writers are so good at knowing what fans want, that the first twenty minutes deliver like no other return in recent TV times. Luther’s lobster hands and Klaus’ tragic quest for acceptance are only two of the attractions here, but Victor Hargreeves makes a sublime entrance, officially, anyway. Victor has always been Victor, and Elliot Page gets to shine like he’s been able to do in no other role before now. And watch out for Jayme, man.

8. Thor: Ragnarok (Marvel Studios movie on Disney+)

Yes, the newest God of Thunder movie, Thor: Love and Thunder, has the Chris Hemsworth tush going on, but how can you resist its predecessor, the Hulk Butt? That was a delight of a moment when Taika Waititi sent the MCU off the rails. His directorial sensibilities are anything but sensible, and that’s why Ragnarok has made a streaming comeback. The latest effort is jam packed, so it’s worth revisiting the one that came before, for more simplicity and the free-wheeling, ferocious style of a (sometimes admittedly tipsy) Valkyrie.

7. Rap Sh!t (HBO Max series)

If you were sad to see Insecure come to an end, there’s good news: executive-producing powerhouse Issa Rae is already back with an even more fun story filled with shenanigans. The show follows a female rap duo, who happen to be childhood friends that reunite with fabulous synergy. They’ve got side (actually, main) hustles and their party-based hustles, and they’re rising to the top with authenticity, all while showing that the glitz and glamour of public-facing life ain’t all that behind the scenes.

6. Stranger Things (Netflix series)

After a multi-year wait, fans finally got to deal with the monstrous byproduct of fan-memedom gone wild, which included the after-effects of Jamie Bower Campbell asking what a “Vecnussy” might be. The show’s actors didn’t entirely clean up with Emmy nominations, but this show’s currently so well received with fans that it’s not even funny. Maybe Millie Bobbie Brown will get those character deaths that she’s always wanted when the final season arrives, but for now, shred with Metallica while taking another long-winded trip to the Upside Down.

5. The Boys (Amazon Prime series)

This show’s already spun off an animated series to keep viewers occupied with backstories between seasons, and there’s a college-aged spinoff well into production, too. Yet there’s nothing quite like the sheer joy involved with watching everyone gang up on Homelander as a team effort. He can’t be stopped, as this season proves, but it’s sure fun to watch it all go down. The “Herogasm” episode delivered even more gross-out mayhem than promised, and the show’s layered characters remind everyone of what’s really at stake here, beyond sheer entertainment value. Hats off to showrunner Eric Kripke and the many people involved with continuing to outdo previous seasons and stay fresh.

4. Only Murders In The Building (Hulu series)

Selena Gomez rules this show, alright? Don’t let that Emmy snub fool you. She’s chronically underappreciated, and this comedy series really lets her deadpan appeal come through while bouncing off the well-oiled, decades-in-the-refining chemistry of Steve Martin and Martin Short. Make no mistake, “Bloody Mabel” is in a tough spot, and as this season wears forth, maybe the mysteries of the show will finally be solved. Scratch that, they’ll only grow more complicated.

3. The Bear (FX series streaming on Hulu)

This breakout hit is a lean, mean, dramedic machine, and the first season was such a raging success that a followup’s already in the works. Will Carmy have sex, though? Somehow, that’s the overriding question for the future, and hopefully, we’ll receive more beautifully show kitchen aesthetics as well. Ayo Edebir and Ebon Moss-Bachrach turn out to be necessary ingredients in supporting Jeremy Allen White (getting the post-Shameless leading man turn that he deserved), and I can’t wait to see where all that tension goes in the future.

2. The Gray Man (Netflix film)

Netflix can’t seem to stop finding compelling trios to star in its blockbuster-y films, and this line up is no less intriguing than The Rock, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot. In this project, Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas star alongside Chris Evans’ mustache in a tale of dark-agency intrigue because I guess this world can’t have enough films that remind everyone of James Bond, especially when the Russo brothers are bringing their producing flavor. Merchants of death and CIA operatives and plenty of action abound, and don’t forget that Gosling’s also warming up for the Barbie movie, too. In other words, more intrigue!

1. Better Call Saul (AMC series streaming on AMC+)

We still don’t know if Kim Wexler lives and dies, but last week’s episode nonetheless broke more than a few hearts. We’re coming up on the Breaking Bad timeline, so one would think that there’s not too many dominoes left to fall, but you never freaking know with this universe. We still need to find out what was up with that scene at the end and what impact it could possibly have on us finding out what the hell’s up with Cinnabon Gene. And that, my friends, could break our heads wide open.

Chase Elliott Won At Pocono Despite Not Leading A Single Lap (Including The Last One)

Two Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas dominated the day at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, as Denny Hamlin held on over Kyle Busch — who led a race-high 63 laps — to give JGR a 1-2 finish for about an hour.

It was supposed to be Hamlin’s 49th career win and seventh at Pocono, as he’s dominated the triangular shaped track over his career, but well after burning the tires down and indulging in the full Victory Lane celebration, Hamlin suddenly found himself 35th on the official post-race standings.

Post-race inspection determined that both Hamlin and Busch’s cars had some materials on the cars where it shouldn’t have been, per NASCAR managing director Brad Moran, and were subsequently disqualified and dropped to 35th and 36th, rather than first and second.

“There was some issues discovered that affect aero in the vehicle,” Moran said. “There really was no reason why there was some material that was somewhere it shouldn’t have been. And that does basically come down to a DQ.”

“We don’t want to be here talking about this problem,” Moran said. “But the teams and the owners and everybody was well aware that this new car was going to be kept with some pretty tight tolerances. There’s some areas that all the teams are well aware that we can not go down the path that we had in the past with the other car.”

As a result the third place finisher, Chase Elliott, who hadn’t led a lap the entire race, was named the official winner while likely already on or getting ready to board a plane.

It’s Elliott’s fourth win of the season and while you don’t normally care how they come, this has to be the least exciting way to win a race ever. It’s not like he even got to find out he won after the race but while still in the car, but I bet the mood on the plane ride was much better once the news arrived.

As for Hamlin, it’s gotta be a brutal way to lose a race on something that likely had nothing to do with him, but NASCAR has really cut down on the ability of teams to modify the new package and unfortunately for Hamlin and Busch, they became the biggest casualties of stricter enforcement yet.

Democrats From Josh Hawley’s Home State Are Throwing A 5K Race In Honor Of His Humiliating Capitol Dash

There have been a lot of shocking and disturbing revelations during the Jan. 6 hearings, incriminating both former president Donald Trump and his many cronies. But one of them was both humiliating and damning. Josh Hawley, the Missouri senator who was seen fist-bumping Trump supporters before the riot, was caught on video making a mad dash out of the Capitol after it was attacked. It flew in the face of his continued attempts to downplay — even profit off of — that day. And now it’s inspired a race.

Democrats from Missouri announced a “Hawlin’ Hawley 5K” race in honor of the senator’s latest public embarrassment. The race will be virtual, and it takes place from July 25 through the 31st. Tickets are $25, which will go to the state’s Democratic party, and those who participate are encouraged to share photos and video on social media.

“Let’s fundraise with as much vigor as Hawley’s cowardly hustle,” the group wrote. “While he might be going places in that video, he isn’t in real life.”

Missouri Democrats weren’t the only ones from Hawley’s home state to drag him over the newly released video. A paper from his hometown, the Kansas City Star, ran an editorial that called him a “fleeing coward,” and dragged his campaign for increased masculinity. “Twitter didn’t see much bravado as he ran from the mob on Luria’s video,” they wrote.

Pete Buttigieg Made A Moving, Forceful Rebuke To The Republicans Who Don’t Want To Protect Same-Sex Marriages Like His

The Supreme Court have opened the floodgates. In June, the right-leaning bench went on a tear, decimating, among other things, the federal right to a safe and legal abortion. But that wasn’t all they did. Justice Clarence Thomas speculated that they could use the same logic they employed to end Roe v. Wade to destroy other human rights, including same-sex marriage. And one key figure in the Biden administration made a calm, moving, yet forceful rebuke of his Republican colleagues.

Transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg went on CNN on Sunday, where he addressed the House semi-narrowly passing a bill, called the Respect for Marriage Act, codifying marriage equality into law, lest the Supreme Court try to reverse it. Forty-seven Republicans voted for it; 157 did not. The bill now heads to the Senate, where it faces opposition from the likes of Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, and Marco Rubio, the latter who has called the bill a “waste of time.”

“If he’s got time to fight against Disney, I don’t know why he wouldn’t have time to help safeguard marriages like mine,” Buttigieg said, alluding to Florida Republicans who’ve supported a bill widely perceived as homophobic and transphobic. “Look, this is really, really important to a lot of people. It’s certainly important to me.”

Buttigieg then walked through a typical morning at home with his husband Chasten Glezman and their twin children. “That half-hour of my morning had me thinking about how much I depend on and count on my spouse every day,” he said. “And our marriage deserves to be treated equally.”

He also took aim at House Republicans, most of whom opposed the bill, which would help protect a federal law that went into effect in 2015. “I don’t know why this will be hard for a senator or a congressman,” Buttigieg said, “I don’t understand how such a majority of House Republicans voted no on our marriage as recently as Tuesday, hours after I was talking about transportation policy, having what I thought were perfectly normal conversations with many of them on that subject, only for them to go around the corner and say that my marriage doesn’t deserve to continue.

“If they don’t want to spend a lot of time on this, they can vote yes and move on. And that would be really reassuring for a lot of families around America, including mine.”

Buttigieg has become very good at delivering thoughtful, restrained yet passionate rebukes to conservative talking points. When a Fox News host tried to get him to denounce people peacefully protesting Justice Brett Kavanaugh at a restaurant, he reminded the far right network that citizens have every right to do so, long as they stay peaceful — which, unlike the Jan. 6 rioters, they did.

Kid Rock Fans Decided It Was A Stage’s Fault That A Concert Was Canceled Due To Weather, So They Threw Beer Cans At It

Concert cancellations are far from a rarity. In fact, it’s been less than a year since they’ve regularly been a thing after they were more or less nonexistent for the better part of two years thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. Concerts get canceled for various reasons: an artist not feeling their best, maintenance issues at a venue, and weather — if the show is outdoors at least. The last reason is why a Kid Rock show in Minot, North Dakota was canceled, and while some might have expected fans to just head home, that was not at all what happened.

The announcement came about 90 minutes after Kid Rock’s opener, Night Ranger delivered a 2.5-hour performance. Once the news was shared, fans were clearly irritated about the unsuccessful wait for Kid Rock so they turned on the venue and took out their anger on the stage. Attendees completely trashed the concert stage as they threw beer cans on it despite multiple announcements blaming severe weather — and not the stage — for the cancellation. Kid Rock himself even spoke about the matter in a post to Twitter. “SO PISSED OFF we could not play for a sold out crowd tonight in Minot, ND (because of high winds),” he wrote. “I know it sucks but none of us can control mother nature. Please be safe leaving and take care of each other.”

At one point during the whole ordeal, a fan decided to make a run for it and jump onto the stage, but they were eventually tackled by security and taken out of the venue in handcuffs.

Bad Bunny’s ‘Un Verano Sin Ti’ Goes No. 1 Again While Doing Something That Hasn’t Been Done Since Adele’s ’25’

There’s little that Bad Bunny has accomplished in 2022. He body-slammed Brock Lesnar at the 2022 WWE Royal Rumble. He landed the role of a wrestling superhero in El Muerto, a new Spider-Man spinoff movie. He turn up in the New York City streets and somewhat had a wedding of his own. He even broke a Spotify record along the way. Altogether, it has made for a pretty impressive year that also featured the release of his fourth album Un Verano Sin Ti, which has absolutely dominated the album charts. For a fourth consecutive and sixth overall week, Un Verano Sin Ti is No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

For the July 30, 2022-dated Billboard 200, Un Verano Sin Ti reclaims its No. 1 crown thanks to 103,000 copies sold in the past week. That number is heavily comprised of streams thanks to 143.15 million on-demand official streams of the album’s tracks. With another week of 100,000 or more album sales (11 in total), Bad Bunny becomes the first to reach that number for this feat since Adele made it to 14 weeks six years ago with 25. Un Verano Sin Ti is also the first album to spend its first 11 weeks within the top two positions of the Billboard 200 since Drake’s Views did so for 17 weeks between May 21 — September 10, 2016.

Additionally, Bad Bunny’s fourth album could surpass the Encanto soundtrack for most weeks at No. 1 in 2022. The Encanto soundtrack spent nine weeks in total atop the Billboard 200 while Un Verano Sin Ti has registered six weeks in total.

Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello Was Accidentally Tackled By Security After A Fan Ran Onstage

After a two-year delay, Rage Against The Machine finally kicked off their long-awaited reunion tour earlier this month. It’s clear that many were and still are excited to see the band perform live, but during a show in Toronto, that excitement proved to be a little too much. During the concert on Saturday night, Rage Against The Machine was getting ready to close out the night with a performance of “Killing In The Name” when a fan decided to make a break for it and run onstage. Luckily, a prepared security guard was there to alter the fan’s plans, and while that happened, Tom Morello got caught up in the action.

The security guard pushed the fan offstage as they ran across it, but their momentum also caused them to push Morello which resulted in the guitarist falling off the stage. The moment brought a wavy of worry to the crowd and Morello’s bandmates, but he got up with some help, dusted himself off, and shared a wave to the audience to assure them that he was all good. This earned a cheer of approval from the crowd as it all proved to be a suspenseful end to the band’s concert.

The incident occurred after singer Zack de la Rocha injured his leg during the tour’s second stop, forcing him to be mostly seated during performances since then.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Will Drop Another 2022 Project With Their ‘Return Of The Dream Canteen’ Double Album

Earlier this year, Red Hot Chili Peppers shared their twelfth album Unlimited Love, and it was a body of work that checked in with 17 songs for what was their first project since 2016’s The Getaway. Unlimited Love went on to become Red Hot Chili Peppers’ second No. 1 album following 2006’s Stadium Arcadium. It was also the band’s fifth consecutive top-two album dating back to 2002’s By The Way. For the first time ever, Red Hot Chili Peppers could achieve consecutive chart-topping albums as they just announced their upcoming thirteenth album Return Of The Dream Canteen.

The band shared the news about the upcoming project during a tour stop in Denver and singer Anthony Kiedis revealed that the album will arrive on October 14 with production from Rick Rubin, who also did work on Unlimited Love. Billboard also notes that bassist Flea said that the album’s first single is titled “Tippa My Tongue.” On Red Hot Chili Peppers’ website, they revealed how Return Of The Dream Canteen came together.

“We went in search of ourselves as the band that we have somehow always been. Just for the fun of it we jammed and learned some old songs. Before long we started the mysterious process of building new songs. A beautiful bit of chemistry meddling that had befriended us hundreds of times along the way. Once we found that slip stream of sound and vision, we just kept mining. With time turned into an elastic waistband of oversized underwear, we had no reason to stop writing and rocking. It felt like a dream. When all was said and done, our moody love for each other and the magic of music had gifted us with more songs than we knew what to do with. Well we figured it out. 2 double albums released back to back. The second of which is easily as meaningful as the first or should that be reversed. ‘Return of the Dream Canteen’ is everything we are and ever dreamed of being. It’s packed. Made with the blood of our hearts.”

Elsewhere, Flea took to Instagram to share why the band is dropping a second album in 2022. “The creative process gives life meaning and purpose!” he wrote. “We put out a double album about four months ago, called Unlimited Love. I love that album, it felt so good to share it with y’all.” He continued, “Welp, now we are putting out another double album and this one is the absolute best of who we are, I’m am f*kking thrilled that we are releasing this sh*t on October 14. Power to the people. Hope it touches hearts.”

Red Hot Chili Peppers is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Texans Rookie John Metchie III Announced He Is Undergoing Treatment For Leukemia

The Houston Texans will likely play the 2022 NFL season without their second round pick, former Alabama star receiver John Metchie III, after he was recently diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia and is currently undergoing treatment.

Metchie released a statement through the team announcing he is in good spirits and expects to make a recovery, noting it is the most curable form of leukemia, thanking fans in advance for their well wishes while explaining he likely will not play this season and focusing fully on his health and recovery.

Hopefully Metchie is indeed able to make a full recovery and eventually return to the football field to begin what should be a promising professional career in the NFL, as he was one of the most electrifying receivers in college football. For now, however, all of the focus and concern is rightfully on his treatment and beating this disease. If Metchie is in need of any inspiration for how he can fight cancer and return to a football career, Steelers running back James Conner and former Chiefs safety Eric Berry are two of the best-known examples, as they each were able to successfully undergo treatment for Hodgkins Lymphoma and return to football at a high level.
