Tove Lo Delivers A Futuristic Performance Of ‘No One Dies From Love’ On ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’

Tove Lo stopped by Late Night With Seth Meyers last night to perform her latest single, “No One Dies From Love.” Joined by a backing band, Lo donned a shiny, metallic unitard.

Creating futuristic elements with her wardrobe and her minimalistically dressed backing band, Lo delivers a chilling, heartbreak anthem over a rolling synth-and-drum-driven beat. “No One Dies From Love” is the lead single from Lo’s upcoming fifth studio album. When describing the single, Lo said in an accompanying statement that the song is about “when you’re with someone for a long time and it ends all of a sudden, it’s like a part of you has died. This person is now a stranger to you. All of the memories are tainted. For the first part of the breakup, you believe you’re not supposed to feel good about anything you had together. What I believe I do best is ‘heartbreak you can dance to.’ The song is that.”

Lo’s fifth studio album is set to be released on her own label, Pretty Swede. In a recent interview with Notion, Lo shared some of her troubles with labels in the past.

“I mean the first 8 years after high school when no producers or labels wanted to work with me felt like an uphill battle,” Lo said, “but that’s part of the journey.”

Check out the performance above.

R. Kelly Case Prosecutors Want The Singer To Get Over 25 Years In Prison

Federal prosecutors have recommended more than 25 years in prison for disgraced singer R. Kelly, according to legal filings obtained by The New York Post. In September 2021, Kelly was convicted of racketeering and eight violations of the Mann Act, which prohibits transporting people across state lines for the purpose of prostitution. He’s scheduled to be sentenced on June 29, and the US Attorney’s Office said that the harsh sentence was needed to “protect the public” from Kelly, who has been accused of around 30 years’ worth of sexual misbehavior, much of it involving minors.

“In light of the seriousness of the offenses, the need for specific deterrence and the need to protect the public from further crimes of the defendant… the government respectfully submits that a sentence in excess of 25 years is warranted,” read the filing. “He continued his crimes and avoided punishment for them for almost 30 years and must now be held to account.”

Kelly’s trial in New York didn’t go well for the singer, as multiple witnesses described horrible abuse of both male and female victims, while Kelly’s defense was reportedly unable to produce one of its own witnesses. Meanwhile, he still faces a separate trial for child pornography in his hometown, Chicago, later this year. Kelly plans to appeal his New York conviction with the help of Bill Cosby’s former lawyer, who will also defend him in the Chicago trial.

Kelly Clarkson Offers Studio Covers Of Radiohead, Billie Eilish, And The Weeknd On Her New EP

Kelly Clarkson has established herself as the queen of covers in recent years thanks to carving out time on The Kelly Clarkson Show for hr “Kellyoke” segment, which sees her delivering renditions of popular songs. Just yesterday, she sang The Weeknd and Ariana Grande’s “Save Your Tears.” Now, though, Clarkson has taken it to the next level with her new Kellyoke EP.

The EP differs from the Kelly Clarkson Show performances in two key ways: While on-show renditions are shortened versions of the songs for the sake of time, the EP sees Clarkson covering the full-length songs. Also, while the show performances are of course live, the Kellyoke EP is made up of studio recordings.

As for what’s included here, the tracklist consists of Roy Orbison’s “Blue Bayou,” The Weeknd’s “Call Out My Name,” Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever,” Whitney Houston’s “Queen Of The Night,” Shaed’s “Trampoline,” and Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees.”

Clarkson has been particularly fond off covering both The Weeknd and Radiohead on her show. She delivered a particularly notable rendition of the latter’s “Exit Music (For A Film)” last month, a performance that put Clarkson’s still-exemplary vocals front and center.

Listen to Clarkson’s rendition of “Fake Plastic Trees” above and stream the full Kellyoke EP below.

A ‘Stranger Things’ Star Was ‘Scolded’ By Netflix For Revealing A Major Spoiler

[This post contains spoiler for Stranger Things season four]

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge was released in 1985, while A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (the best Nightmare movie imo) came out in 1987. What was Freddy doing in 1986? Hanging out in Pennhurst Mental Hospital, naturally. One of the biggest guest stars in Stranger Things 4 was Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, as blind Victor Creel, who was institutionalized after being accused of brutally murdering his family. We later learn what actually happened, but Englund somewhat spoiled the surprise months before the season came out.

“I’m so proud of myself because they don’t give you the full script. And boy, you have to keep your mouth shut. (Laughs.) I went to a convention a while back, and I’m not allowed to talk about it, no spoilers — but some kids at the convention already knew!” he told the Hollywood Reporter when asked about a certain character’s identity. “And I don’t know how! I think I answered one question about being blind or something.

Englund got “called up” and “scolded” by Netflix “because I had done a spoiler. I didn’t even mean to! The fans at the con were actually ahead of me on their knowledge of the plot, but that’s how careful you have to be.” If only he had framed it differently, something like, “Spoiler alert, you’re going to die, b*tch.” You can take Robert Englund out of Freddy Krueger, but you can’t take Freddy Krueger out of Robert Englund.

Jensen Ackles Only Had A Slight (But Unusual) Complaint About His Supe Outfit In ‘The Boys’

With The Boys Season 3 in full swing, Jensen Ackles stopped by Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk about all things Soldier Boy. Ackles is no stranger to showrunner Eric Kripke, who created a “little show” called Supernatural, so of course, the actor was game to star in the Amazon series. (Ackles has also dabbled in the comic book world thanks to his voice work for the DC Animated Films, and he also did a stint on Smallville prior to his demon-hunting days with Jared Padalecki.)

However, when Ackles showed up to get fitted for his Soldier Boy costume, he couldn’t help but notice that something was missing from his suit.

“I got the nice one. I could still move around. There was no leotard, no rubber, no suit that you had to peel off at the end of the day,” Ackles told Meyers. “That being said, while we were fitting it — these things are a work of art and they take quite a bit of time to put together — the super suit costume designer, L.J., she was starting to putting the stuff together. I was like, ‘Are you going to give me some muscles?’ Like I see these suits, and they’re clearly outlined with added muscles.”

That’s the moment Ackles learned he was going to spend some serious time in the gym. “She just lightly tapped me on the shoulder and she goes, ‘You’re gonna bring me some muscles in April.’”

Ackles did deliver. Back in June of 2021, he showed off his jacked Soldier Boy physique in a post on Instagram. Although, he did jokingly write in the caption of his workout photo that he’s “getting too old for this crap.”

The Boys Season 3 is streaming new episode Fridays on Amazon.

The Best Hip-Hop Albums Of 2022 So Far

What a year for hip-hop it has already been. After four years of radio silence from Kendrick Lamar, the Compton poet returned with one of the most vulnerable projects of his career. Another returning veteran was Pusha T, who followed up his fan-favorite 2018 album Daytona with another near-immaculate collection of stripped-down straightforward rap songs about his favorite subject. Plenty of newcomers made their marks while underground favorites took big steps out of their respective boxes. Hip-hop continues to grow in exciting new directions, and if this is what the year has to offer, there could be even greater heights ahead.

42 Dugg x Est Gee — Last Ones Left

42 dugg est gee last ones left
42 Dugg & EST Gee

42 Dugg and EST Gee are two fast-rising sensations with an impressive slate of collaborations already. They joined forces on the joint project Last Ones Left to fuse Dugg’s signature euphonious vocal tone and Gee’s hardened snarl over 17 tracks. “Ice Talk” is a captivating opener, with the two rapping in syncopation over the thumping Helluva production. Their peers 42 Cheez, Reaper, and Tae Money join one of the long 42 Dugg records for the midtempo posse cut “Whole Gang Buss,” another standout that functions almost like a 4×100 relay race the way each rapper quickly gets in and gets out. EST Gee gets his time to shine alone as well on “Who Hotter Than Gee,” putting a bow on what has been a great last few years for the Louisville lyricist. – Armon Sadler

Babyface Ray — Face

Babyface Ray Face
Babyface Ray

From the moment Face opens with a Timbaland and OneRepublic “Apologize” sample on “My Thoughts 3 / Pop’s Prayer,” it’s clear Babyface Ray had something special in-store. The 20-song project features newer faces in 42 Dugg and Icewear Vezzo, a veteran in G Herbo, and even legacy act appearances from Wiz Khalifa and Pusha T. Vezzo and Ray trade bars effortlessly on “6 Mile Show,” with a notable downtempo beat switch that doesn’t come at the expense of the ferocious rapping. ”Me, Wife & Kids” is the highlight solo outing for Babyface Ray on an overall strong 2022 offering. – Ar.S.

Big KRIT — Digital Roses Don’t Die

Big KRIT Digital Roses Don't Die
Big KRIT

One of hip-hop’s most consistent characters, Big KRIT is now on his third independently released album and has yet to show signs that he’s hit a rut, grown bored, or run out of room to grow. That he pulled this feat off while also contributing heavily to the Girl Talk-produced Full Court Press should be all the evidence you need that KRIT deserves even more flowers. Waka Flocka Flame had a point when he called the Mississippi rapper his generation’s most underrated. – Aaron Williams

Buddy — Superghetto

Buddy - Superghetto
Buddy

Am I biased putting this one here? Sure, very much so. Am I wrong? Give the catchy “Hoochie Mama” a spin. When you’re still reciting that inescapably catchy hook weeks later, maybe you’ll start to agree. If not, then the Compton rapper’s lively two-step anthem “Wait Too Long” with Blxst will occupy any remaining brain space not taken over by the former. For more serious fare, turn to the powerful heritage pride chant, “Black 2.” Then there’s the psychedelic surf rocker “Bad News.” In short, there’s nothing Buddy can’t do. – A.W.

Coi Leray — Trendsetter

coi leray trendsetter
Coi Leray

Despite a relatively lukewarm commercial reception, Coi’s debut project did exactly what it set out to do. There’s literally no one out doing what she’s been doing. That can make her slippery delivery somewhat bewildering and give fans few obvious hits to hold onto (the excellent Nicki Minaj collab “”Blick Blick“” notwithstanding) but those who want to put the New Jersey rapper in a box are missing out on what she’s truly capable of. Who else can do an “”Anxiety“” and a “”Twinnem“” on the same album while shifting hip-hop’s conventions into unrecognizable new shapes? – A.W.

Cordae — From A Bird’s Eye View

cordae from a bird's eye view
Cordae

In the lead-up to Cordae’s second album, I was convinced it’d be one of the year’s best and I wasn’t disappointed. A more muscular version of his 2019 debut, The Lost Boy, FABEV cuts the fat, getting to the foundation of Cordae’s appeal: fiery battle raps, like the ones on “Super” and “Sinister“”; lush, moody vocals, such as on “”Chronicles“; and the vulnerable, relatable autobiography of “Momma’s Hood” and “C Carter.” – A.W.

Denzel Curry — Melt My Eyez See Your Future

Denzel Curry - Melt My Eyez See Your Future
Denzel Curry

Denzel Curry had a mission with Melt My Eyez See Your Future: be himself and give himself fully to listeners. It is the most intimate offering of the South Florida rapper’s career, with a lot of soft and mellow sounds accompanying his more calculated flows. These elements combined, along with the presence of acts like T-Pain, 6LACK, Slowthai, and Robert Glasper, to make what could very well be Curry’s best project to date. “Walkin,” “Angelz,” and “X-Wing” pretty much force you to press that “Repeat 1” button and let the music transport you into the artist’s multi-faceted mind. Thus, the album is aptly named. – Ar.S

Dreamville — D-Day

dj drama dreamville - d-day
DJ Drama

Aside from their undeniable music talents, Dreamville’s in-house chemistry is one of the best aspects of the label. It comes alive through one-off collaborations between individual members and full-blown compilation projects like their D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape. Its 15 songs brought forth the wisdom of J. Cole and Omen, the impressive lyricism from the likes of Cozz and Lute, the soulful spirit of Ari Lennox, and the impenetrable confidence of Bas, Earthgang, and JID. Altogether, D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape helps to extend the undeniable legacy that Dreamville has built over the last decade. – Wongo Okon

Earl Sweatshirt — Sick!

Earl Sweatshirt

Earl Sweatshirt came out of hiding this year with the 10-song offering Sick!, and the bars were aplenty. “2010” and the title track highlight how Earl is in a much clearer state of mind despite all he has endured over the years. He trades his usual in-depth, analysis-requiring raps for a more direct approach and it lands. The former Odd Future member is always a welcome listen as he brings something fresh into the space, and Armand Hammer and Zelooperz add their unique flair to make this a memorable early 2022 project that warrants mid-year and, likely, end-of-year discussion. – Ar.S.

Earthgang — Ghetto Gods

Earthgang Ghetto Gods
Earthgang

Earthgang’s versatility is something to absolutely take note of as it’s what makes the Atlanta duo so special. The first ample serving of it arrived in 2019 with Mirrorland, but after a few years of work and just experiencing the world, Earthgang checked back in with their second album Ghetto Gods. Boisterous raps and soulful records are the foundation of Earthgang’s latest body of work, and through it all, Earthgang excellently displays their absolute certainty about the world around them, both its good and bad sides. – W.O.

Fly Anakin — Frank

Fly Anakin - Frank
Fly Anakin

Fly Anakin and his Mutant Academy affiliates have been underground rap mainstays for some time, but on his latest, he strips away some of the many layers of mystery to finally get at the heart of who he really is. On Frank — titled for his real name — he expands on his autobiography while still ripping killer rhymes over a sumptuous gumbo of distorted, genre-twisting beats. It’s backpack rap on next-generation hallucinogens, custom-designed to bring the boom-bap set into the 2020s. – A.W.

Future — I Never Liked You

future i never liked you
Future

Everything you love about Future, he gives on his ninth studio album I Never Liked You. He holds down his thrown as the “Toxic King” and even embraces his position in the video for his No. 1 hit song “Wait For You” featuring Drake and Tems. Within Few’s assortment of melodic raps, live pockets of sweetness are cut with bitter rhymes, which help convey the ebb and flow of Future’s romantic relationships. “Love You Better” is a way-too-short R&B song about letting go of someone who is seeming falling out of love with him (maybe they took too long to text back?), abruptly preceded by the next track, “Massaging Me,” as if the rapper suddenly remembered that he is FUTURE. “We turn to Miami to Sky-ami” he belts out within the first seconds, coupled with a chorus that sounds like he’s saying “misogyny” not “massaging me.” Future’s I Never Liked You gives exactly what you came for. – Cherise Johnson

Girl Talk, Wiz Khalifa, Big KRIT, Smoke DZA — Full Court Press

wiz khalifa big krit smoke dza girl talk full court press
Asylum/Taylor Gang

There’s a lot to be said for simplicity and surprise. Here’s an album with both in spades. Girl Talk, who had an impressive production run in the 2000s and has popped up sporadically throughout the 2010s as the beatmaker on a handful of rappers’ projects, returned with an unexpected cast of collaborators and some impressive, sample-based tracks that made the most of their contributions. That they have plenty of chemistry with each other is icing on the cake. – A.W.

Gunna — DS4EVER

Gunna DS4EVER
Young Stoner Life/300

Gunna took his mixtape series Drip Season to the mainstream with his third studio album DS4Ever. The selection of 20 songs reinforces Gunna’s ability to offer an album with a lot of songs — mostly good — just as he did with Wunna. Sure, “Too Easy” and “Livin Wild” were the chosen singles, but when the people heard “Pushin P,” the attraction drove the song to viral paradise and the Hot 100 chart. “Poochie Gown,” “Thought I Was Playing” featuring 21 Savage, “South To West,” plus many more have the potential to be sleeper hits. Though Gunna is locked up and facing RICO charges, the cultural impact he presented with DS4Ever off “Pushing P” alone will forever be remembered. Mission accomplished. – C.J.

IDK — Simple

IDK Kaytranada Simple
IDK

DMV-bred artist IDK has released a project a year since 2014, but in recent years, he’s really spread his wings. In contrast to his last few rap-oriented projects, Simple takes a hard left turn. Embracing the sounds of funk and jazz-influenced dance music, IDK and producer Kaytranada craft a project that truly stands out amid the glut of new hip-hop in the streaming era. Whether trading bars with Denzel Curry on “Dog Food” or preaching meditation on “Breathe,” IDK’s latest is an impressive example of what rap can be when you commit to ignoring the rules and doing your own thing. – A.W.

Jack Harlow — Come Home The Kids Miss You

jack harlow come home the kids miss you
Jack Harlow

Jack Harlow embraces the good side and bad side of fame on his sophomore album, Come Home The Kids Miss You. He’s still curious why he is slept on after multiple No. 1’s and Grammy nominations, but his curiosity doesn’t supersede his confidence. He opens the Drake collaboration “Churchill Downs” with the affirmation, “Sometimes when I sit back and really let it register / I did everything I said I would and said it first / I mean the world’s in denial but they all know what I’m headed for.” Though he obviously gets outperformed by The Boy on this soul sample-laden song, there’s a clear improvement from his previous effort, That’s What They All Say, in terms of flows and production. Legends Lil Wayne, Justin Timberlake, and Pharrell join the mix for a record full of standard Jack punchlines and simping. – Ar.S.

Kali — Toxic Chocolate

Kali - Toxic Chocolate
Kali

Don’t call her the female Future. The Atlanta-bred newcomer turns the tables on hip-hop’s current climate of toxicity, throwing back that energy every bit as powerfully as it’s received. In the process, she also flips classic ’90s R&B, gives a masterclass on setting boundaries, and reminds listeners that it takes two to tango. The best part? This is just her debut EP; if it’s this good, just imagine what her first full-length album will accomplish. – A.W.

Kendrick Lamar — Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers

Kendrick Lamar Mr Morale & The Big Steppers
Kendrick Lamar

When you wait an extended amount of time to receive something, the expectation is that said item will be worth the wait. However, on Kendrick Lamar’s fifth long-awaited album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, the Compton rapper couldn’t care less if you like him or his latest body of work. He pushes boundaries in ways we never expected him (see: “Worldwide Steppers,” “Savior,” and his collaborations with Kodak Black). While some of us may disagree with some of his points, it’s quite admirable that Kendrick goes out of his way to destroy the facade placed on him against his will, and he does it on yet another intricate and impressively built body of work. – W.O.

Larry June & Jay Worthy — 2 P’s In A Pod

Larry June & Jay Worthy - 2 P'z In A Pod
Larry June & Jay Worthy

Hailing from Compton and San Francisco, respectively, Jay Worthy and Larry June are two congruent originals that finally linked up for a full-blown album in 2 P’z In A Pod. Produced entirely by Sean House — the other half of LNDN DRGS with Worthy — tracks like “Maybe The Next Time” and the supreme “Leave It Up To Me” are instant drop-top classics. This is throwback SoCal G-Funk vibes meet Bay Area Hennessey-soaked sideshow rap. The album is loaded with scenes of the two West Coast storytellers relishing in their moment together in the sun, but with zero f*cks given. – Adrian Spinelli

Latto — 777

Latto - 777
Latto

Latto hit the jackpot with 777, rapping with authority, showing off her singing pipes, and providing several empowering anthems for women in a world that still can’t seem to figure out how to respect them. Though “Big Energy” is the major hit here, songs “Like A Thug” featuring Lil Durk and “It’s Givin” possess a similar formula for greatness by employing popular colloquial phrases. Though the album only features dudes (Lil Wayne, Childish Gambino, 21 Savage, Kodak Black, Nardo Wick) that may typically be the nucleus of these kinds of records, Latto does a great job asserting herself both as a woman and rapper. – Ar.S.

Leikeli47 — Shape Up

Leikeli47 Shape Up
Leikeli47

The long-awaited follow-up to Leikeli’s 2018 album Acrylic did not disappoint. The masked rapper fully embraced her eclecticism and versatility on her third album, going from booming techno-rap on “Chitty Bang” to thumping house on “BITM” to full-on yearning R&B on “Hold My Hand.” It’s also Leikeli’s most personal project to date. She recounts a love at first sight encounter on the stripped-down “LL Cool J” while detailing a messy breakup on “Free To Love.” Showing off her tender storytelling, rugged battle raps, and engaging party rhymes across Shape Up‘s 14 tracks, Leikeli proves she is one of rap’s most fascinating artists today. – A.W.

Lil Durk — 7220

Lil Durk - 7220
Lil Durk

Lil Durk has been reveling in a seismic career shift since 2020, and 7220 continued that momentum. While one could say he doesn’t deviate much from his usual repertoire, there’s no need to fix what isn’t broken as “The Voice” has multiple pitches. “Petty Too” featuring Future and “What Happened To Virgil” featuring Gunna serve as the project’s two-headed monster with precise, melodic rap hybrid flows. “Difference Is” with Summer Walker successfully follows up their collaboration “Toxic” from her 2021 album Still Over It, and is arguably better. Durk has no issue getting heartfelt, whether it’s towards women or reflecting on his fallen friend King Von. – Ar.S.

Pusha T — It’s Almost Dry

Pusha T It's Almost Dry
G.O.O.D. Music / Def Jam

Pusha T’s It’s Almost Dry is the coke album that everybody can enjoy. The production is updated, his flows are updated (snapped on “Call My Bluff”), his lyricism is there, and King Push’s resilient energy is present throughout the 12 song project. Push even has something for the kids, too. “Scrape It Off The Top” with Lil Uzi Vert and Don Toliver doesn’t sound too forced, but it does sound right on time. Then, the flip to “Neck & Wrist” with hip-hop vets JAY-Z and Pharrell sees inspiration from that same new generation of artists. The synergy is immaculate. It’s Almost Dry proves that Pusha T can make palatable coke raps and modernize his flow, while also staying true to his roots with songs like “Diet Coke” and “Open Air.” – C.J.

Saba — Few Good Things

saba few good things cover
Pivot Gang LLC

Let’s face it; the last couple of years have been absolutely terrible for many of us. But for a lot of us, they were just more bad news on top of what was already a daily struggle. Saba’s new album, intended to be a dramatic shift from the somber fan-favorite Care For Me, acknowledges the hardships that come with being Black in America while also dealing with a global pandemic, then tells us to find those moments of joy that make it worth going through. – A.W.

Snot — Ethereal

snot ethereal
$NOT

Snot’s a real punk — not in the bad way, but in the way that he is deadset on doing his own thing no matter what. If that involves annoying one of the hottest stars today? Sorry, Doja — you’re fair game. Oh, a band with the same name is mad at him for sharing the stage with one of the bands they came up alongside? Too bad. Snot packs his latest with plenty of the rebellious energy he’s known for, then rebels against his own reputation. Ain’t nothing more punk than that. – A.W.

Vince Staples – Ramona Park Broke My Heart

vince staples ramona park broke my heart
Vince Staples

While you weren’t looking, Vince Staples dropped his best record to date. Sharing poignant anecdotes of his childhood in Long Beach, while tying in contemporary issues, Ramona Park Broke My Heart allows for the listener to better understand Staples as he recounts his tumultuous upbringing and opens up about his mental health. The low bass and often downtempo production within the tracks allow for a West Coast feel throughout the record. – Alex Gonzalez

Unearthed Audio Reveals A GOP Lawmaker Confronting Lauren Boebert Over Her Unsafe, Unsavory Behavior On Jan. 6

Rootin’ tootin’ Lauren Boebert’s not having the best week. She embarrassed herself by tweeting about Magic Mike (and duly received some comeuppance), and then news broke that she’s staring down a fraud investigation over a (literally) astronomical claimed expense. Now, New York Times investigative reporters Alexander Burns and Jonathan Martin have begun circulating audio from January 6 — insurrection day and the same day that Boebert woke up and tweeted, “Today is 1776.”

Burns and Martin, who are promoting their new book (This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America’s Future), visited with Don Lemon and revealed details of an confrontation between Boebert and a disgusted GOP colleague, Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA), who wanted to know why the heck Boebert (who was mere days into her freshman congressional turn) was tweeting about Nancy Pelosi’s whereabouts (and removal from the House Chamber) in the U.S. Capitol complex.

You can hear the conversation above, via Raw Story. And via Mediaite, the transcript shows that Boebert wasn’t winning points with her (much) less incendiary colleagues. In particular, Beutler wasn’t thrilled:

BEUTLER: Is it true that you were live tweeting from the floor our location the people on the outside as we were being attacked, Lauren?

BOEBERT: Umm, yes. Those tweets did go out and that was something that was live and public information. It was broadcast live.

BEUTLER: So don’t ask us about security if you’re telling the attackers where we’re at. I yield back.

BOEBERT: So, that was something being broadcast live from C-SPAN, and once we were on move, there was absolutely nothing else that was broadcast.

For the record (and although Boebert didn’t tweet out the actual room where Pelosi was taken), Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) previously revealed that the Sergeant of Arms in the House chamber told representatives to “not make any social media posts. It was said repeatedly.” But that didn’t stop Boebert, nor did it (obviously) stop the confrontation.

What To Watch: Our Picks For The Ten TV Shows We Think You Should Stream This Weekend

Each week our staff of film and TV experts surveys the entertainment landscape to select the ten best new/newish shows available for you to stream at home. We put a lot of thought into our selections, and our debates on what to include and what not to include can sometimes get a little heated and feelings may get hurt, but so be it, this is an important service for you, our readers. With that said, here are our selections for this week.

Get more streaming recommendations with our weekly What To Watch newsletter.

10. (tie) George Carlin: American Dream (HBO Max)

CARLIN
HBO

Director Judd Apatow weaves archival footage, diary entries, and invaluable insights from George Carlin’s daughter Kelly to create an extensive portrait of a legendary comedian and thinker whose thoughts on life and culture still resonate and routinely trend on Twitter 16 years after his death. What’s most remarkable about Carlin may not be that unheard of staying power, but how he continued to innovate and reinvent himself over a 50+ year career to get to the point where his words and memory would carry so much weight with so many people; something Apatow explores thoroughly here while exploring the drive, complexity, and artistry of the man.

10. (tie) I Love That For You (Showtime)

bayer
SHOWTIME

Vanessa Bayer was one of the best things about Saturday Night Live during her seven-year run and while nothing beats her awards-worthy work in the sketch comedy’s Totino’s trilogy, this definitely comes close. Based on Bayer’s own experience with childhood cancer (and her ongoing love affair with the home shopping channel) the show follows a yet-to-fully-mature woman who lies about her cancer diagnosis to keep her dream job. Everyone from Molly Shannon to Jenifer Lewis helps out here but it’s some of the lesser known members of the cast that really shine. Watch it on Showtime.

10. (tie) The Staircase (HBO Max)

The Staircase
HBO Max

The original true-crime docuseries (originally on Sundance TV) captivated enough people on Netflix that HBO Max decided to dramatize the story, and lo and behold, it works. Colin Firth plays Michael Peterson, who served prison time after the death of his wife, Kathleen (portrayed by Toni Collette) under mysterious circumstances. Sophie Turner and Parker Posey are on hand, and there’s a (SPOILER ALERT) certain theory that won’t be overlooked. This shall be an eight-part adaptation that explores the nature of fact and fiction and goes to some unexpected places. Watch it on HBO Max.

9. Physical (Apple TV Plus)

phys
APPLE

Two important things are worth noting here. The first is that this show, a fun dramedy starring Rose Byrne that takes a spandex-tight look at the 1980s aerobics era and the types of people who made it a whole thing, is returning for a second season. The second thing is that this new season adds Murray Bartlett to the cast, which, as anyone who watched him devolve into an amphetamine-snorting lunatic on The White Lotus can attest, is a wonderful development. Good news all around. Watch it on Apple TV Plus.

8. That’s My Time With David Letterman (Netflix)

NETFLIX

David Letterman continues to recreate his old late-night show in pieces. First, it was the talk show portion with My Next Guest Needs No Introduction and now it’s the stand-up comedy showcase side of things with his newest Netflix show, That’s My Time, where he blesses newish comics by inviting them to his stage (at Netflix’s recent comedy fest) to do their act and have a quick chat. This comes after news that Letterman was teaming with Sarah Silverman to turn his old Stupid Pet Tricks bit into a show. Think about it, get paid for one show with 5 or 6 pieces or 5 or 6 shows? The man is as good at money as he is at beard growing. Watch it on Netflix.

7. For All Mankind (Apple TV Plus)

mankind
APPLE

What we have here is an alternate history situation, one where the space race of the 1960s didn’t end, thanks in large part to Russia beating America to a handful of important achievements. The show is now in season three, so there’s plenty for you to dive into if you want, which you probably should, in part due to a bunch of space cowboys doing cool space cowboy things, and in part because all your television-obsessed friends won’t stop talking about it. Win-win. Watch it on Apple TV Plus.

6. Peaky Blinders (Netflix)

YouTube

By order of the Peaky fookin’ Blinders, we demand you watch the final season of Netflix’s historical crime drama. Why? Because Cillian Murphy has never been better. Because we’re building up to a second World War. Because there are Fascists with tiny mustaches and Prohibition’s over and familial blood feuds are wreaking havoc across two continents and gypsy curses are being broken and Tom Hardy is back (doing his unintelligible mumbling thing while writing an original opera) and … well, you get it right? Watch it on Netflix.

5. Barry (HBO Max)

Barry Season 3
HBO

It should not be possible to enjoy watching a sweet man like Bill Hader destroy his life and the lives of those around him, and yet, here we all are, ready for season three of Barry, one of the best shows on television. It’s a dilemma, honestly. Not as much of a dilemma as, say, being a hitman who stumbles into an acting career and has to occasionally kill more people to prevent other people from learning that he has a history of killing people, but still. There’s an embarrassment of riches at play here. Find another show that features Henry Winkler and Stephen Root and D’Arcy Carden where none of them are the funniest character, somehow, against incredible odds. This is the power of NoHo Hank. You either know what that sentence means or you desperately need to binge Barry as soon as possible. Watch it on HBO Max.

4. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Disney Plus)

OBI
DISNEY

If Obi-Wan is a name you’ve not heard in a long time (long time), you’re in luck. Ewan McGregor reprises his role as Not-So-Old Ben in Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, a six-episode limited series set a decade after the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Also back: Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader. Should you watch Obi-Wan Kenobi? Yesssssssssssss. Watch it on Disney Plus.

3. Ms. Marvel (Disney Plus)

Ms Marvel
Disney+

This show brings us the perfect actress, Iman Vallani, for the leading gig of portraying Kamala Khan. She takes us on a fun-filled revamp of her character’s comic character, and this show is a roaring ball of glee that will help to set up The Marvels, which will not only include Kamala and Carol but also Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Paris) from WandaVision. The MCU’s lightening up again, and we love to see it. Watch it on Disney Plus.

2. The Boys (Amazon Prime)

AMAZON

Finally, The Boys. Are. Back. And so is Homelander, although he is most decidedly not okay after the events of the Season 2 finale, so plenty more increasingly sadistic behavior will soon arrive on that end. He’s got competition in the “hero of heroes” department, though, because Jensen Ackles climbs aboard as Soldier Boy (a profane Captain America knockoff), who’s definitely all up in the “Herogasm” episode, which you should sit down before watching. And expect the show to actually transcend those exploding heads, the whale collision, and Homelander’s self-pleasuring scene atop a skyscraper. In other words, clear you calendar for these weekly decadent delights. Watch it on Amazon Prime.

1. Stranger Things 4 (Netflix)

st4
NETFLIX

The long-awaited fourth season of Stranger Things is, in a word, epic. And that’s not because of its cinematic run times. Well, not entirely. It’s true you’ll essentially be watching seven movies, not episodes, but those are packed with all of the 80s nostalgia, Dungeons and Dragons references, demonic possessions, prison breaks, rink parties, and secret government experiments you could ask for. Hawkins is in more danger than ever and with Eleven powerless, there’s no superhero in sight — unless you count Erica Sinclair, which obviously you should. But the joy of this season is watching the rest of these weirdos and misfits band together to save each other … and themselves. Watch it on Netflix.

What To Watch: Our Picks For The Ten Movies We Think You Should Stream This Weekend

Each week our staff of film and TV experts surveys the entertainment landscape to select the ten best new/newish movies available for you to stream at home. We put a lot of thought into our selections, and our debates on what to include and what not to include can sometimes get a little heated and feelings may get hurt, but so be it, this is an important service for you, our readers. With that said, here are our selections for this week.

10. Jackass 4.5 (Netflix)

JACK
MTV/NETFLIX

What we have on our hands with this is a collection of new stunts and some behind-the-scenes of old stunts all featuring the sweet and chaotic boys from Jackass. You love that stuff. Don’t you dare overthink it. Turn your brain off and let the madness wash over you. Watch it on Netflix.

9. Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers (Disney Plus)

CHIP
DISNEY

There are two things happening here. The first is that, yes, we have another streaming-based reboot/reimagining nostalgia-bait film on our hands, this time for the Rescue Rangers. Which is… fine. But it brings us to the second thing: the talent involved in this sucker is wild. Voice work by Andy Samberg and John Mulaney and Seth Rogen, who really need to work together on a live-action project at some point. Direction by Akiva Shaffer, who also did MacGruber. it’s kind of nuts, really, which we promise is not a chipmunk pun. The point is that if you’re going to do one of these things you can at least try to do it right. The effort here is appreciated. Watch it on Disney Plus.

8. On the Count of Three (VOD)

three
ANNAPURNA

Jerrod Carmichael is having a moment, garnering all the praise for his revealing and powerful HBO special (Rothaniel, watch it again!), a great turn as SNL host, and now, for the release of his festival fave narrative directorial debut, On The Count Of Three. But, of course, you knew Carmichael was a force from his previous specials and The Carmichael Show. You’re just happy to see everyone else catch up and, with this film, get the chance to see Carmichael flex his dramatic muscles opposite Christopher Abbott as two friends trying to get the most out of the last moments before they execute each other as a part of a suicide pact. Track it down on your VOD service of choice.

7. The Batman (HBO Max)

Zoe Kravitz Catwoman The Batman
Warner Bros.

What if Seven but with way more leather and punching? In a lot of ways, that could serve as a very simple synopsis of what Matt Reeves has done with the crown jewel of DC Comics lore, placing his take beside The Joker on the highest shelf (both in terms of artistry, societal commentary, and other adult themes) in the DCEU film library. Does it work? In some ways, absolutely, providing a grim but intriguing vision of the Batman as a detective with the mother of all chips on his shoulder as he wrestles with his thirst for vengeance and a vicious villain in Paul Dano’s Riddler, who is always seemingly one step ahead of him and Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon (a buddy cop pairing that is as awkward as it is rewarding). Throw in Zoe Kravitz’s tremendous turn as Selina Kyle/Catwoman (who also connects so well with Robert Pattinson’s Batman that you wish Reeves would have allowed for even more of their on-screen back and forth) and Gotham City’s usual mix of criminal underworld string-pulling and civic corruption and you’ve got a very full meal. Overfull? Too mature? Let’s just say The Batman can seem so grown up and dense at times that you may forget that it’s a superhero movie, for better or worse. Watch it on HBO Max.

6. The Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks (Amazon Prime)

KIDS
CBC

The weird and wonderful new season of Kids In The Hall can be appreciated on its own merit, but to learn the story of how the legendary Canadian sketch group came to be in the mid ‘80s, came to push every boundary in the early ‘90s, came undone, and then came back together adds a layer to the whole thing. Those in search of a full accounting of their improbable run can check out Paul Myers’ “One Dumb Guy” book, but Amazon’s all-new doc, Comedy Punks, covers the highlights quite well, adding in a host of new interviews from the guys.

5. Norm MacDonald: Nothing Special (Netflix)

NORM
NETFLIX

Look elsewhere for a meditative self-exploration of a comic inching toward the end of his life. Norm Macdonald just wants to tell jokes, delivering a very Norm set in a very non-Norm setting (recorded at home with no audience due to COVID) with urgency. David Letterman puts it perfectly in the loose conversation that follows with him, Conan O’Brien, Dave Chappelle, Adam Sandler, Molly Shannon, and David Spade, saying it’s not stand up, but something different. But it’s still something worth seeing for Norm’s swan song and also the aforementioned conversation, which brings a level of closure to fans who get to hear a few great Norm stories and some thoughts on what made him so unique. Watch it on Netflix.

4. Ambulance (Peacock)

AMBULANCE
UNIVERSAL

Ambulance has everything you could want in an action movie: frenetic pacing, adrenaline-soaked chase scenes, Michael Bay doing everything at once, hot explosive nonsense, Jake Gyllenhaal as a villainous psychopath with crazy eyes, an ambulance, etc. It’s basically perfect, if this is the type of thing you’re looking for, which you probably are on a Friday or Saturday night. Make some popcorn or order a pizza and get in there. Watch it on Peacock.

3. Dirty Daddy: Bob Saget Tribute (Netflix)

Friends and colleagues of the late comedian and Full House star get together for one last tribute, this one probably full of sweet memories and filthy jokes. Which feels right. Watch it on Netflix.

2. Fire Island (Hulu)

fire
HULU

Bowen Yang may be the best talent to emerge from Saturday Night Live in years – a fact underscored by the recent departure of comedy greats like Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant – but he’s not the only reason this sweet and silly gay romcom works. A BIG reason, sure, but not the only one. There’s also Margaret Cho playing a loopy lesbian house mom, a setting that allows a group of Queer misfits to find a sense of belonging amidst MDMA hazes and pulse-pounding raves, and a central love story that borrows from the period romance wellspring of one Jane Austen. It’s a booze-infused Pride & Prejudice in short swim trunks for the gays and the theys, but the fact that it works so damn well is also proof that the romcom genre should be welcoming more Queer and minority romantic leads into its ranks. Watch it on Hulu.

1. Hustle (Netflix)

hustle
NETFLIX

Adam Sandler plays a scout for the Philadelphia 76ers who discovers a raw but promising player in Spain. Hijinks ensue. Kind of. It’s more of a dramedy than, say, Jack & Jill, but it’s still Sandler doing his thing. Basketball fans will no doubt be just as interested in the action as they will be picking out all the cameos by NBA stars. It looks like a good time. Watch it on Netflix.
