The Nets Will Meet With Kyrie Irving About An Extension To ‘See If It’s The Right Fit For Both Sides’

Kyrie Irving owns a $36.9 million player option for the 2022-23 season. If he decides to opt out, he is eligible for a four-year, $189.7 million extension from the Brooklyn Nets or a four-year, $182.1 million deal from a different team. Only Brooklyn can offer a fifth year, at which point Irving’s new contract would be worth $245.6 million across five seasons. If he exercises his player option, he could ink a three- or four-year extension with Brooklyn.

Nets general manager Sean Marks said the organization has yet to engage in discussions with Irving about a new contract, but Marks, Irving, and Nets owner Joe Tsai will meet at some point to assess whether the partnership is “the right fit.”

“I look forward to getting in a room with him and Joe and his team, and we will,” Marks told YES Network. “We’ll see what it looks like for Kyrie moving forward here, and what he needs from us and so forth.

“So, again, it wouldn’t be right for me to comment on what hypothetical could happen, because we don’t know. We haven’t had those conversations with Kyrie yet. But when they do, we’ll see if it’s the right fit for both sides.”

During his three seasons in Brooklyn, Irving has struggled to stay on the court. Injuries, personal leaves, and a refusal to adhere to New York City’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate have all factored into his absences. He’s missed 126 of 238 games as a member of the Nets, including 53 of 86 this year.

Chelsea Handler Shared A Topless Goodbye Message To Ellen DeGeneres, Because She’s Chelsea Handler

Chelsea Handler made her whole brand in 2007-2013 just being a chill girl who is also pretty chaotic and doesn’t care about what people think. It worked then, it doesn’t work quite as well now, but hey, she can do what she wants!

The comedian, along with David Spade and Kevin Hart, filmed a farewell video for Ellen Degeneres as she finishes up her final season of the most toxic talk show work environment in Hollywood. Hart and Spade made some run-of-the-mill retirement jokes: Hart gifted DeGeneres with a lifetime supply of soup and a blanket, while Spade lightly roasted the comedian for constantly pranking her guests.

Handler, on the other hand, took a different approach and said a quick goodbye while topless. “I would show you my breasts but we’ve already seen them so I’ll just sit like this and tell you that I am so proud of you,” Handler said while taking off her top. “You are a rock star. You made this work for 19 years and that’s a long f*cking time so go have fun, and you know what that means.” What does it mean? Is she going to make music with Machine Gun Kelly?

The final episodes of The Ellen DeGeneres Show air next week after nearly two decades on television. Just think: we all have Dakota Johnson to thank for this.

How To Make The New York Sour, The Centuries-Old, Newly Trendy Cocktail Everyone’s Talking About

I’ve been seeing the New York Sour everywhere lately — IG stories, TikTok, Google News Feeds. Hell, I went to lunch with an old friend this week and he regaled me about the New York Sours a bartender made for him over the weekend. As an old-school bartender from the very highest end of the scene, I nodded along knowingly. Cocktails come and go, sometimes multiple times over actual centuries. The New York Sour is one of those cocktails.

This is a drink dating all the way back to the mid-1800s. Ironically, this was probably created in Chicago as the “continental sour” but was renamed the “New York Sour” at some point, and here we are. Since then, there have been a lot of variations, but the fundamentals have remained the same: A whiskey sour with a float of dry red wine. That’s really it. But that also means you need a pretty steady hand to float the wine in between the cocktail and the egg white foam on top. Some bartenders will shake up a whiskey sour without egg white and float some red wine on top … that’s fine, I guess, but sort of misses the point of the presentation (and it’s lazy).

Long story short, this just takes practice. Practice shaking up a nice and frothy whiskey sour in general and practice floating wine betwixt two layers of a cocktail. So let’s dive into the recipe and get you started on your New York Sour journey.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. rye whiskey
  • 1 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 0.5 oz. simple syrup
  • 1 small egg white
  • 1 oz. dry red wine
  • Ice
  • Lemon peel

These are all very findable ingredients. I’m using Woodford Reserve Rye simply because I have a bottle of it to kill. Use the rye or bourbon you like. I’m also using dry Italian wine from the grocery store. Again, use one that you like.

Lastly, try and use a small egg (the box should tell you the size somewhere on it). A small egg white will be about half the size of a large egg white. You need about 0.75 ounces of egg white for this so you can just measure it out from whatever eggs you have.

What You’ll Need:

  • Rocks glass
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Hand juicer
  • Paring knife
  • Jigger
  • Barspoon

Method:

  • Fill a rocks glass with fresh ice.
  • Add the whiskey, lemon, egg white, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker.
  • Affix the lid without ice and dry shake for about 20 to 30 seconds. Make sure to hold the lid while you do, otherwise it’ll pop since no vacuum is created thanks to the lack of ice. Science!
  • Remove the lid and add a handful of ice. Re-affix the lid and shake vigorously for another 20 to 30 seconds.
  • Strain the cocktail over the fresh ice in the rocks glass. Make sure to shake out all the foam into the glass.
  • Very gently pour the red wine in a slow stream on the very edge of the glass so that the wine floats between the cocktail and foam on top.
  • Slice a thin peel of lemon and spritz the oils over the glass and place the peel on the edge as a garnish. Serve.

A quick note: If you want to get that perfect “flag” presentation, with exact lines between each layer, use a six-ounce glass and prechill it, and then don’t use ice in the glass.

Bottom Line:

This is pretty damn tasty. Since the cocktail is so much denser than the wine, you get a nice mix of the sour and the wine on each sip. It really should never fully mix together if you just sip it.

The lemon and whiskey are a match made in heaven, with spicy/woody and vanilla notes playing with bright lemon oils. Plus, the egg white creates a beautiful velvety mouthfeel. Seriously, it’s like silk.

As for the red wine float, it does add a nice tannic dryness to the lemon meringue. It’s a good balance that works, probably why this drink has lasted nearly three centuries. Just keep that hand steady and slow as you float that red wine.

Geraldo Claims He Saw UFOs While ‘Stoned On Ecstasy’

UFOs are a hot topic right now, as reports of UFO sightings have been on the rise and the government is now getting involved to get to the bottom of exactly what is happening. So of course the brain trust at The Five on Fox News wanted to get in on discussing these events, as Mediaite reports.

After Jesse Watters and Emily Compagno joked about the entire thing, Watters asked Geraldo Rivera if he thought it was the government’s place to investigate these sightings. Rather than really answer the question, Geraldo instead shared a story about his own UFO encounter.

“I’ve sailed around the world, I’ve seen a lot of clear skies,” Rivera explained, just as his comment took a sharp turn. “I’ve seen satellites, which are kind of spooky, weather balloons stray aircraft. The only time I ever saw a UFO, I was stoned on ecstasy.”

So just what did the guy who was on live TV when he found nothing in Al Capone’s vault do about it? “I steered around it, and I went back the other way,” he explained. “It just tracked me everywhere I went.”

In 2019, Rivera appeared on an episode of the Travel Channel series Famously Afraid, in which he shared a story about the time he and his wife saw a UFO from their boat. Was it the same night? Was he tripping balls in that story, too? The truth is out there.

Taylor Swift Delivers A Fun And Insightful Commencement Speech At NYU After Receiving An Honorary Doctorate

Taylor Swift did not attend college, which is fair considering she started her path towards international music superstardom with her 2006 self-titled debut album, which she released when she was just a teenager. So, today is a big day for her, as she received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from New York University (NYU). She made it clear she was thrilled about the whole thing this morning when she shared a video of herself donning her cap and gown and getting ready for today’s commencement ceremony.

She wasn’t just there to get her honorary doctorate, though, as at the Yankee Stadium graduation, she also delivered a commencement speech (technically, the “Response On Behalf Of The Honorary Degree Recipients,” per the 2022 ceremony program).

During her speech, she noted, “I’d like to thank NYU for making me, technically, on paper, at least, a doctor.” She added she’s not the kind of doctor you’d want around for an emergencies, unless those emergencies were about writing pop songs or naming “over 50 breeds of cats in one minute.” She also offered some nuggets of wisdom, like, “Life can be heavy, especially if you try to carry it all at once.” Elsewhere, she reflected on her own journey through the music industry and her life.

The ceremony program notes of Swift, “Taylor Swift is a trailblazing and influential advocate for artists’ rights in the face of exploitation and a forceful global advocate against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. An 11-time Grammy winner, she is one of the most prolific and celebrated artists of her generation.”

This comes after NYU offered a course about Swift this past semester, which was described, “This course proposes to deconstruct both the appeal and aversions to Taylor Swift through close readings of her music and public discourse as it relates to her own growth as an artist and a celebrity. Through readings, lectures and more, the class delves into analyses of the culture and politics of teen girlhood in pop music, fandom, media studies, whiteness and power as it relates to her image and the images of those who have both preceded and succeeded her. We’ll also consider topics like copyright and ownership, American nationalism, and the ongoing impact of social media on the pop music industry.”

IDK Keeps Things ‘Simple’ In His At-Home Tiny Desk Concert Featuring Mike Dean

One of the most fun elements of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts has always been the crowd interactions — something that has been missing ever since the series went to an at-home format as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, as restrictions have eased up and vaccination levels increase, it looks like we’ll start to receive something of a hybrid approach whenever it’s possible. IDK’s new Tiny Desk Concert brings back the live audience feel as he invites neighbors and friends to his Los Angeles home to perform new songs from his recently released album Simple.

Opening with the soulful “Puerto Rico,” IDK opts to set the mood with the smooth, melodic gem from USEE4YOURSELF rather than one of his harder-hitting rap tracks, which allows him to present himself as a “sweet guy” and adds to the overall inviting mood. Meanwhile, Kaytranada’s jazzy, house-influenced production from Simple proves to translate beautifully to the stripped-down set, where some synthesized baby grand sets the groove as IDK’s friend thumps out the beat on a coffee table. Mike Dean also makes an appearance to contribute a ripping guitar solo to IDK’s latest single, “Breathe.”

Ryan Reynolds Plugs ‘Deadpool 3’ With The Return Of A Beloved Character And Some (Playfully Obnoxious) Brand Shoutouts

After Deadpool was noticeably missing from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness despite a fan theory to the contrary, the official Twitter account for the Merc with the Mouth films has provided an update on the highly anticipated Deadpool 3. In a new tweet on Wednesday morning, the Deadpool handle shared a Photoshopped image of Rob Delaney‘s character, Peter, from Deadpool 2 and made it clear that product placement will be king.

“Deadpool 3 update: We’ve nailed down brand integrations,” the official account tweeted. “Story, character, and script next!”

Eagle-eyed fans of Ryan Reynolds will notice the actor’s Aviator Gin and Mint Mobile have been added to the scene, and there appears to be a poster for Wembley Stadium, which could be a nod to the soccer team Reynolds purchased with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney.

As for Delaney’s (possible) return as Peter, the actor previously pitched how his character could return back in November when he was promoting Home Sweet Home Alone. Via Comic Book:

“I know at the end of Deadpool 2 he asked if he can get Domino’s email address, so I think it might be funny to see him pursuing Domino quite earnestly, but with no skills at all to try and woo her. So that would be pretty funny and I think given a real challenge by Deadpool, if he really had to go take out a bad guy or something because say Deadpool had eaten some bad shrimp earlier. I think to see Peter and some genuine danger and also a little bit of romance, I think I’m just saying, you know what everybody else wants.”

Back in March, Reynolds announced that his Free Guy and The Adam Project director Shawn Levy will helm Deadpool 3 for Marvel Studios. More importantly, Kevin Feige has confirmed that the third film will be Rated-R, putting to bed concerns that the character would be watered down to score a PG-13 rating.

The Only Cornbread Recipe You Need For The Best BBQ Season Ever

Everyone has their go-to cornbread recipe. The thing is, most of those recipes are probably for corn cakes or corn muffins and not cornbread. Say it with me, folks, real-deal cornbread does not need wheat flour or sugar (refined sugars, syrups, whatever). It just needs really good cornmeal that will shine through on its own.

Today’s “classic” cornbread is a simple mix of really good — naturally sweet — medium-to-coarse cornmeal (not corn flour), eggs, and buttermilk with a little salt, fat, and leavening agent (but even that last one is a matter of debate with hardcore purists). If you want to go back further, the cornbread we know today stems from Indigenous American culinary cultures across what’s now the Northeast, Southwest, Midwest, and South of the United States. Course cornmeal was mixed with salt, water, and fat and baked in hearth ovens for millennia before Europeans arrived on these shores (and Africans were abducted and brought here) and adjusted the recipe to suit their own cultures/palates/times.

For the recipe below, I’m adhering to the Sean Brock method because, well, he’s one of the foremost stewards of these types of recipes. Plus, Brock’s recipe feels like a good middle ground between the “historic” Indigenous cornbread of the past few thousand years and the “classic” cornbread of today’s American South. Moreover, this is a very straightforward recipe that only requires a little bit of skill, patience, and good timing. When you get it right, it’s wonderful.

Let’s get baking!

Cornbread

Cornbread
Zach Johnston

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups medium-coarse yellow cornmeal
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 cup lard plus 2 tbsp.
  • Butter
Cornbread
Zach Johnston

Get good buttermilk and eggs. Organic is fine, but if you have a farm store/farmer’s market near you, go with that. The fresher the better on that front.

As for the cornmeal, I go with a medium-coarse mill. I actually mix white hominy and yellow together for a half-and-half vibe. I’ve also done this with blue cornmeal to really amp up the sweetness. If you’re looking for real-deal and naturally sweet cornmeal, check out Anson Mills or Marsh Hen Mill for some serious cornmeal.

Lastly, if you want to make this without the lard, you can easily use either vegetable oil or white Crisco. Just keep an eye on the smoke point when you’re heating the skillet in the oven.

Cornbread
Zach Johnston

What You’ll Need:

  • Stand mixer or bowl, wooden spoon, and some elbow grease
  • 9-inch Cast iron skillet
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spatula
  • Oven mit
  • Toothpick
Cornbread
Zach Johnston

Method:

  • Add the lard to the cast iron skillet and place it in the oven while you preheat it to 500f.
  • Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl and mix with your fingers until integrated.
  • Once the lard is fully melted, remove the skillet from the oven while it continues to preheat.
  • Add the buttermilk and eggs to the mixing bowl and combine with the cake paddle attachment of your stand mixer (or your wooden spoon).
  • Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just integrated. If you’re adding crumbled bacon or diced jalapenos or anything, do it at this step.
  • Add 1/4 cup of melted lard from the cast iron skillet into the cornbread batter while mixing it. Make sure to keep at least two tablespoons of lard in the skillet.
  • Place the skillet with the lard back in the oven until it just starts to smoke.
  • Fold the cornbread batter into the super-hot skillet. Gently but quickly even out the top of the cornbread batter. The lard should sizzle pretty loudly as it creates a fried edge to the cornbread. The hot oil/fat should come up above the edge of the cornbread batter but not over the edge of the skillet.
  • Place the skillet in the oven and bake for about ten to 12 minutes or until the cornbread is just set and the edges are brown and crisp. (Mine took ten minutes)
  • Remove from the oven as soon as a toothpick comes back clean from the middle of the cornbread. Let sit for five minutes and then flip the cornbread in the skillet so that the crispy bottom is upward-facing.
  • Serve with butter and honey, beans, pulled pork, chili, whatever.
Cornbread
Zach Johnston

Bottom Line:

Cornbread
Zach Johnston

This is cornbread. The crust is so crispy and luscious with that fat layered into the sweet cornmeal. It helps to create a textural masterpiece.

The body of the cornbread is light and almost airy, which is wild for something made with a milled grain as dense as cornmeal. The crumb is smooth yet has great peaks and valleys for butter or chili to get into. Take a look at it!

Cornbread
Zach Johnston

The flavor is a mix of bright sweet corn with a hint of buttermilk tang and plenty of grassy graininess. But, it really all comes back to that textural vibe. The crispy edge is just wonderfully crunchy with that semi-grainy, semi-soft interior with a truly natural sweet edge. I ate two pieces with butter immediately and I regret nothing.

All of that said, if you’re used to “Yankee cornbread” — or the kind made with loads of wheat flour and sugar — this might be a big departure for you. Fear not, you’ll love it. By trying it this way, you’ll get to the essence of the corn at the heart of this dish. And you’ll have a great recipe to share when everyone is raving this BBQ season!
