The ‘Russian Doll’ Season One Finale, Explained

Russian Doll’s first season was a bleak, beautiful philosophical experiment that wrestled with some of life’s most perplexing questions. It was alternate timelines and recurring death loops and missing deli cats and birthday chickens, all wrapped up in ketamine-laced fever dreams that forced its main characters, Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) and Alan (Charlie Bartlett) to reckon with their past trauma and finally move on from it.

But, as memorable as the show’s first season was, it also debuted nearly three years ago — before global pandemics and international conflicts and Will Smith Oscar slaps clogged the timeline. So, if you’re having a bit of trouble remembering exactly what went down in its physics-defying finale, you really shouldn’t feel bad about it. A lot has happened since Natasha Lyonne coined a new pronunciation of the word “cockroach,” and no one can blame you for not keeping track of the show’s many intersecting timelines. Still, if you plan on binging season two when it lands on Netflix April 20th, you’ll likely need a quick refresher. We’re here to help with that.

Here’s exactly what the hell went down in Russian Doll’s season one finale.

Throughout the show’s first season, Nadia was stuck in a purgatorial time loop. A loner with a tough exterior shell and a hell of a lot of baggage, her mid-life crisis was filled with questionable drug use and hookups with sleazeball sex addicts. But, on the night of her 36th birthday, after heading home with a stranger and then venturing out in search of her missing cat, Nadia was struck dead by a speeding taxi. It’s where her story should’ve ended, and yet, she woke up again (and again, and again) in the bathroom at her friend’s place — a party raging outside, an Israeli joint waiting to be offered, and the same people repeating the same patterns from the timeline before. On her quest to figure out why the universe was f*cking with her, she met Alan, an uptight, deeply-depressed young man stuck in his own loop. Alan’s death may have been intentional while Nadia’s was accidental but they both had the same amount of trauma and bad life choices to work through and it seemed someone or something was urging them to do it together.

By the end of the season, Nadia and Alan’s extinction was on the horizon. Sure, they had died multiple times, but despite the cyclic nature of their resurrections, time was still moving in a linear fashion. Fruit was rotting. Friends were disappearing. The end, like the real end, felt very near. And to avoid it, Nadia had to confront her guilt of her mother’s death by rediscovering her inner child and her ferocious will to live while Alan had to forgive his ex-girlfriend (and himself) for their shared unhappiness. But fixing one problem simply created another and, by the show’s final episode, Nadia and Alan found themselves in separate timelines.

An enlightened Nadia (donning a white shirt with her usual black getup) had to prevent a previous version of Alan from committing suicide while an enlightened Alan had to convince the earlier version of Nadia not to go down her preferred path of self-destruction. The conundrum was hinted at in the episode’s name, “Ariadne,” a reference to the Greek myth about a woman who must lead the man she loves out of an intricate labyrinth that houses a monster inside. She does so with a sword, so he can slay the beast, and a string, so he can find his way out of the maze. Now that Nadia and Alan had both slain their own demons, the universe was testing whether they could help each other find a way out of the time loop on their own. It was a full-circle moment illustrated with some pretty cool split-screen visuals and a Fellini-esque final sequence involving a parade of homeless people in Tompkins Square Park. But, eagle-eyed fans quickly noticed that while the “real” Nadia (with the white shirt) was walking with the parade after the split-screen had fused, two versions of her past self brushed past her, walking in the opposite direction.

So, what did it all mean? Were Alan and Nadia in the same timeline? Were multiple versions of Nadia existing at once?

Russian Doll Finale
Netflix

Yes, and yes. But also, no.

Lyonne recently told Variety that the ending is “subjective.”

“It’s their present. So you’re actually looking at both the Alpha Nadia and Alan — but that doesn’t mean the Beta Nadia and Alan are not there,” she said. “But I do think people experienced it as an actual split, that you’re looking at Alpha Nadia with Beta Alan.” The plan initial was to create a kind of multiverse, which means we could check in with these other versions of Nadia and Alan in the future. But for season two, the show seems to be sticking with Alpha Nadia and Alpha Alan, catching up with them a few years later and they dive deeper into their pasts by way of a time portal.

“Rather than doing all this backward exposition to tie together the intervening three and a half years, the idea is, whatever iteration of it it is, Alpha Nadia and Alpha Alan are here and now, being faced with the question of, now that I’m not dying, how do I start living?” Lyonne explained. “When you strip away the fat of a lot of this high-concept sci-fi stuff, that really is at the heart of the question from a character standpoint this year.”

So it seems like, while the issue of multiple Nadias and Alans hasn’t fully been resolved, the final versions of both characters are the ones we’ll meet in season two and, instead of confronting death, they’ll be figuring out what it looks like to actually live.

‘Russian Doll’ will return on April 20.

Danny Elfman performed an incredible version of ‘The Simpsons’ theme song in concert

While many might be flocking to Coachella this year to catch Harry Styles or Billie Eilish, composer Danny Elfman is quickly becoming the music festival’s show stealer. Of course, as a huge Elfman fan (even his Oingo Boingo days), I could be biased.

For starters, Elfman, who used to look like this:

upload.wikimedia.org

Now looks like this:

A sort of punk rock Ron Weasley in the best way. Oh, did we mention he is 68 years old?!

And then there’s his live version of the theme song from “The Simpsons.” In full cinematic glory.

Danny Elfman credits the award-winning, legendary theme song as being “The easiest thing he’s ever done.” In an interview with Vulture, Elfman revealed that he came up with the tune on the ride back home from an interview with Matt Groening, the show’s creator.

Ever the avant garde-artist, Elfman told Groening, “If you want something contemporary, I’m not the guy for that. But if you want something like a crazy Hanna-Barbera that never was, then I think I’m the right guy.”

And crazy it was (and is). Elfman came up with a song that has a bit of everything: a crazy amount of musical variations, an epic saxophone solo, something called the devil’s interval … all within the span of 90 seconds.

The very next day after sending the proposed track, the song got the green light. And the rest is a 33-season history.

“I didn’t think [The Simpsons] would last more than one season, if it even lasted one season,” Elfman told Vulture. “So I did it purely for fun. That silly moment would become this major defining moment in my life. It’s amazing. It’s ironic.”

If there’s any doubt as to what a symphonic masterpiece this theme song is, just watch the video from Coachella. It has everything the original had. Only bigger and badder.

Danny, please save some genius and sheer coolness for the rest of us. Actually, one second thought: Just continue being your wild, unhinged, brilliant self.

Researchers at Stanford University have created solar panels that generate power at night

The biggest drawback of solar power is that panels generate very little power on cloudy days and zero at night. People with residential solar systems usually have a setup that generates more electricity than they use during the day, so they can live off the power company or a battery at night.

The monetary savings come from generating more power during the day than you take from the grid at night over the course of the year.

This arrangement is fine for people who live in developed areas. But for the 750 million people around the world who live in areas without an electrical grid, solar panels aren’t a reliable power source and battery storage is expensive.

A new development from Stanford University may be a big help to people living in underdeveloped areas that are completely off the grid. The university researchers created a solar panel that generates a significant amout of power during the day and a small amount at night.

According to the study published earlier this month in the journal Applied Physics Letters, the new panels can serve as a “continuous renewable power source for both day and nighttime.”

The new panels are pretty easy to make, too.

“What we managed to do here is build the whole thing from off-the-shelf components, have a very good thermal contact, and the most expensive thing in the whole setup was the thermoelectric itself,” Zunaid Omair, a metrology engineer from Stanford University and one of the study’s authors, said.

The solar panels function like a traditional panel during the day but run in reverse to continue generating electricity at night. After the sun goes down, the panels are able to generate electricity off the difference in temperature between the ambient air and the solar panel’s surface.

(Or for you physicists out there, it works by tapping into the heat being radiated from the surface of the solar cells as infrared light into outer space.)

A big drawback is that the panels aren’t very effective on cloudy nights.

When pointed at the night sky, the solar panels generated a power output of 50 milliwatts per square meter or about 0.04% of the power output of a traditional solar cell during the daytime. This is enough power to run a low-wattage LED light or to charge a cell phone.

“The nice aspect about this approach is that you essentially have a direct power source at night that does not require any battery storage,” Shanhui Fan, a professor at Stanford’s School of Engineering, said according to New Scientist.

Battery storage for solar power can be unreliable and expensive, so these new panels can be a big benefit to people in areas that are without a traditional power grid. “Our approach can provide nighttime standby lighting and power in off-grid and mini-grid applications, where [solar] cell installations are gaining popularity,” the study said.

The ability to run an LED light or a phone charger in the middle of the night may not seem like a game-changer to most people in the developed world, but it can make a huge difference in the quality of life for people living in remote areas of the planet. Further, this is just the beginning. Traditional solar panels have come a long way over the past few decades. Who knows what the future holds for this promising new technology?

A Potential Juror Was Dismissed From The Kardashian/Blac Chyna Trial Because He Was Worried That He Wouldn’t Be Able To Stop Thinking About Kim’s Sex Tape

The Kardashians have had a rough few weeks, from allegedly photoshopping their children to being dissed by “the woman from Will & Grace. Now, the family is in court against Rob Kardashian’s ex Blac Chyna, and it is becoming hard for the judge to find suitable jurors for the case.

While selecting the jury for the trial, potential jurors were asked if they had opinions on reality TV. According to Page Six, one man, who appeared to be in his 50s or 60s said he had never seen the show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, though he had seen Kim’s infamous sex tape.

“I have watched [Kim] Kardashian’s sex tape, and I don’t think I can be impartial on this case,” the man said. The comment drew laughter from other jurors, which made Kris shake her head, and Khloe allegedly try to comfort her sister Kim. The man insisted he wouldn’t be right for the juror because he would be “replaying that sex tape over and over again.” That’s one way to get out of jury duty!

The family has been preparing for a trial against Blac Chyna, who sued the Kardashian-Jenner family in 2017, alleging that they purposely sabotaged her reality show. She had called the family “media predators” and is seeking millions in return for her canceled reality show, Rob And Chyna.

The Kardashians, the family’s latest reality show, just premiered on Hulu earlier this month after ending their 20-season run on E! last summer. Maybe the family should consider taking a short break, just for a bit!

Alexander Skarsgard Has Admitted That His Pantsless IMDb Profile Pic Was Inspired By Zac Efron

While promoting his upcoming Viking epic, The Northman, and all of its fighting naked on top of a volcano goodness, Alexander Skarsgård revealed why he’s panstless in his IMDb profile pic. As longtime fans of the Swedish actor will probably remember, Skarsgård took the stage with Samuel L. Jackson at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards to pump up The Legend of Tarzan. However, Skarsgård proudly strutted on stage without any pants on while rocking a pair of tighty whities. The actor was still working a full tuxedo from the waist up, and that’s because he was bound by sexy law to not show his torso or risk imitating his nemesis: Zac Efron.

Via IMDb on Twitter:

The year before, Zac Efron had taken his shirt off. He is so sexy. I decided to also show a little bit of skin. I couldn’t take my shirt off, ’cause Zac had already done that. So I thought, well, then I’ll take my pants off, ’cause it’s equally sexy.

So there you have it. Skarsgård’s seemingly random underwear show was actually a full blown assault on Efron’s sexy stripping from the year before. And, now, it’s apparently the first thing you see when you check out Skarsgård’s acting credits on IMDb, which he seems to be quite pleased with.

The Northman opens in theaters on April 22.

Ted Cruz Is So Very Worried That Disney Might Start Showing Mickey And Pluto ‘Going At It’

Senator Ted Cruz is opening his mouth so that weird words can fall out again and this time, they’re directed at Disney.

The GOP punching bag who was oddly mum on the question of whether he’d fellate another man to end world hunger is pretty clear on where he stands when it comes to Disney’s opposition to the recently-passed “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Of course, because this is Ted Cruz we’re talking about — the man who once “liked” a pornographic video on his official Twitter account — he had to attack the happiest place on Earth by giving us all a mental image involving two beloved cartoon characters.

“I think there are people who are misguided, trying to drive Disney stepping in saying, you know, in every episode now they’re going to have, you know, Mickey and Pluto going at it,” Cruz said turning a taping of his podcast.

The topic up for debate centered on critics of the bill who are worried that it would force teachers who identify as LGBTQ+ to remain closeted out of fear of being sued by students’ parents, but you’d be forgiven for missing that point since Cruz seems fixated on sexualizing a children’s show. The senator also lamented the state of programming on Disney’s kid-friendly channels saying, “It’s just like, come on, guys, these are kids and, you know, you could always shift to Cinemax if you want that! Like, I’m a dad, it used to be that you could put your kids on the Disney channel and be like, all right, something innocuous will happen.”

Real question: Has this dude actually seen a Disney movie or TV show before? Or even like the beginning of Bambi? Dead moms and child brides and Stockholm Syndrome are all over the place in Disney films, but he’s drawing the line at two gay dads holding hands or something?

Nicki Minaj And Fivio Foreign Assert Their Royalty In The Street-Rooted ‘We Go Up’ Video

The New York drill movement has been simmering for a few years, but lately, it appears ready to boil over thanks to some high-profile co-signs from two of the top women in rap. First, Nicki Minaj joined Brooklyn’s Fivio Foreign on her new song, “We Go Up,” following a pair of back-to-back releases alongside Lil Baby with “Do We Have A Problem?” and “Bussin.” Then, her erstwhile rival Cardi B followed up with an appearance on Bronx rapper Kay Flock’s “Shake It,” returning to her own street roots with a bandana-patterned crimson hairdo.

Now, Nicki Minaj is back with the video for “We Go Up,” getting back to her Smack DVD Nicki days. Decked out in a hot pink ensemble, Nicki parks her Lamborghini Aventadors on the block with Fivio and his crew to assert their street royalty. A few different bandanas show up in this video too, but in such a way that suggests that the movement is stronger when both sides move together, no matter which color flag they wave. With such powerful supporters, it looks like the New york drill movement is having a moment, and who knows? Maybe the genre’s two newest members can find some common ground too.

Now’s the best time for it; Nicki has been working on her comeback, popping up on Coi Leray’s new album and covering Adele on Carpool Karaoke. However, even if she doesn’t patch things up with her former foe as she did with City Girls’ Yung Miami, Nicki is still proving there’s a place for her in the hip-hop landscape, even after taking so much time off.

Watch the “We Go Up” video above.

Get Your Milk Gallons Ready, ‘Jackass 4.5’ Will Finally Hit Netflix In May

While promoting Jackass Forever, the cast of the cringe-worthy but lovable stunt movie confirmed that they had filmed enough content for not one but two movies of men (and now a woman!) hurting themselves for comedy. Finally, the extended edition of Jackass Forever will debut next month, with all-new stunts and footage.

Jackass 4.5 will feature more skits and stunts, and some potential surprise guests. Earlier this year, Johnny Knoxville confirmed to Screen Rant that the movie would be “stacked” with unseen footage.

The movie will be released on May 20th exclusively on Netflix, while the original Jackass Forever is staying on Paramount+. A Blu-ray version of the movie was also released this week, featuring over 40 minutes of new footage and extended scenes.

As Rachel Wolfson told Uproxx earlier this year, “There’s a lot of stuff that you guys didn’t get to see that will be in 4.5 and I’m very excited for that to come out as well.” Wolfson was one of the newest members of the Jackass team, who was picked by Knoxville himself after he DMed her on Instagram. She was famously bitten on the lips by a scorpion and licked a taser. But that’s not all! “They got so much good content for this movie, that 4.5 will be such a great movie as well.”

Kim Kardashian Is Trying To Walk Back Her ‘Get Your F**king A** Up And Work’ Comments (For A Second Time)

Kim Kardashian kicked off a wave of controversy in early March that saw the reality star get brutally roasted on social media for telling people to “get your f**king a** up and work” during a sprawling Variety cover story ahead of The Kardashians premiere on Hulu. After the heat died down, Kim stopped by Good Morning America later in the month where she attempted to chalk the whole thing up to being taken out of context when she also said that “nobody wants to work these days.”

However, that excuse was quickly shot down by Variety Chief Correspondent Elizabeth Wagmeister who reviewed the raw footage and said the question Kardashian was asked was “very direct” and quoted in context.

Maybe the second time is the charm because Kim is once again trying to massage her business advice that sparked reactions that the reality star is wildly out of touch with the true working class. This time around, Kardashian says she was having an “off day,” which in fairness, is a much better excuse than claiming she was taken out of context. Here’s what she told the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast via Mediaite:

“I want everyone to win. Truly, I think there’s always enough to go around. I love supporting all my friends and small businesses and any women I meet.” Kardashian continued, “It will definitely teach me to be careful in the sense of like, I don’t care what kind of day or mood, or what other question was coming in that, that tripped me out and got me — maybe my tone was different, but I still — it made me sad that it was perceived that way cause I would never want to hurt anybody or intend for that to be offensive.”

You’d think after spending almost two decades in the public eye, Kardashian would be aware that her every word is scrutinized. However, when you have that level of fame, it’s easy to suffer a severe disconnect from the rest of the world, where work doesn’t involve glamorous photoshoots or working out of a mansion.

A Model/Influencer Had The Perfect Response To Rumors That She Canoodled With Timothee Chalamet At Coachella

Timothée Chalamet has done pretty well for himself, starring in movies both big and acclaimed as well as turning heads at the Oscars with his eccentric couture. Being a handsome young man with floppy hair, he’s had his share of romantic gossip. But one of his alleged hook-ups not only evaded intrusive questions but did so in a most creative fashion.

Sarah Talabi, a model and influencer who has appeared in Victoria’s Secret ads, was questioned by Page Six after images and videos circulated online of her possibly canoodling with the once and future Paul Atreides during Coachella 2022 last weekend. She confirmed that, yes, she was there and, yes, those are her in the photos, alongside not only Chalamet but also her twin sister Leah Talabi.

But when it came to the million dollar question, she inventively changed the subject.

“Everyone is asking me if I was kissing Timothée Chalamet at Coachella, and that is a good question,” Talabi wrote in her statement to Page Six. “But a great question would be asking our world leaders why the Earth is now losing 1.2 trillion tons of ice each year due to global warming and why climate crisis reform has been completely ineffective.”

So instead of asking if she made out with the Call Me By Your Name guy, she advises, “I encourage you to contact your local representatives and ask them that.”

There’s a lot of troubles in the world right now, from the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the American rightwing losing its mind (or moreso). Climate change, which endangers the future of the young like Talabi and Chalamet, can sometimes get lost in the shuffle. So Talabi bringing it up, while being asked about her personal life, is a smart and wise move. Nice work.
