Few things are more heart-wrenching than seeing a baby fighting for its life. The NICU—Neonatal Intensive Care Unit—is the unit in hospitals where babies who are born prematurely or who have health conditions that need specialized treatment go for care. It’s a special place, where hope and worry whirl together in a dizzying dance to the irregular rhythm of monitors beeping.

No one likes seeing a baby in the NICU, despite the fact that it gives vulnerable wee ones the best chance to survive and thrive. That’s the goal of every NICU, to help babies get to the point where they’re OK in the outside world, as well as the goal of every parent and healthcare worker who steps foot in the unit.

For parents, having a baby in the NICU is a harrowing experience, and having doctors and nurses who understand that fully can make all the difference. That’s why a tweet about a NICU doctor’s “new favorite hobby” being “hyping up” her NICU patients to their parents resonated with so many people.

Dr. Jennifer Sedler is a third-year pediatrics resident at Stanford Pediatrics Residency Program, according to TODAY Parents. She had just finished giving parents updates on their babies’ progress when she felt an “overwhelming sense of positivity” that she wanted to share with others. So she sent out a tweet that said, “My new favorite hobby is hyping up my NICU babies to their parents. I list their accomplishments for the day, say how proud I am of them, or highlight how strong they were today. It’s such a joy to see/hear their parents beam with pride over their tiny fighters.”

People loved her attitude and passion for her patients and their parents. Knowing that a doctor cares this much is a balm to the terrified hearts of parents who are praying their baby pulls through. When it’s clear that parents and doctors are on the same team, both eagerly wanting the same outcome, it’s easier for everyone to accept the outcome, whatever it is. And when you know that each day makes a difference, hearing positive, compassionate reports from caregivers can give parents some small measure of hope.

“It’s not about sugarcoating it or about providing false hope, because talking about the difficult news and the hard times it’s important, too,” Sedler told TODAY Parents. “But there’s both tangible and intangible victories in the NICU. There’s the tangible things like weight gain and lab values. But then there’s intangible things like, despite the procedure your baby had to have today they’re being strong throughout it, or they’re really fighting through this tough time.”

People began sharing their stories in replies to her post, some sharing photos of their NICU babies and where they are now, with a flood of praise for the healthcare workers who worked with them.

So many people shared how much they appreciated the care they got from NICU nurses and doctors and how important reports like Dr. Sedler’s were to them.

“I absolutely never imagined that would be the response,” Sedler told TODAY Parents. “To be totally transparent, I teared up quite a few times reading these stories over the last few days.”

Sedler isn’t planning on a career in the NICU—her chosen specialty is cardiology, but she had to do a NICU rotation as part of her program to ensure that residents are trained in pediatric care. But her time in the NICU has had an impact.

“There is just such a special energy about the NICU, and about new life and supporting these families that makes it a really special place to work,” she said.

Sedler said she believes “positive energy really makes a difference” for patients in the NICU. “I think that going about our lives in that same way, and calling out those little victories, is what’s going to help get us through the tough times.”

This year’s Martin Luther King Jr. was a little different than most. Every year, Republicans spend the holiday praising the civil rights leader with fawning words — while often stomping out legislation that would align with his beliefs. This year they got called out on their hypocrisy more forcibly than usual. But it wasn’t the GOP who were dragged. It was also two Democrats who are joining those on the right in blocking much-needed voter rights legislation.

Those Democrats, of course, are senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin. For months, they’ve refused to support key pieces of Joe Biden’s agenda, to the delight of Republicans. They’re also both against amending or even removing the filibuster, which has easily allowed Republicans, who haven’t controlled any body of government in over a year, to stall Democratic legislation. Sinema and Manchin are facing more opposition than ever before. And on CNN, Don Lemon wound up lumping them in with their Republican brethren.

“Inevitably you get the politicians, especially the ones in Washington now who are blocking people’s access to the voting booth, and they want to use Dr. King conveniently,” Lemon railed. “They’re the biggest hypocrites on the planet. Because if Sinema and Manchin really want to honor the legacy of Dr. King and all the people who fought for civil rights and voting rights in this country, what they would do is do a carve-out for voting rights with the filibuster.”

But, Lemon said, “for some reason they are mired in tradition. And they are stuck with these rules that are backwards. And as a former president said, at John Lewis’ memorial service, these are relics of Jim Crow,” he said, referring to Barack Obama. “The filibuster has been used to block civil rights legislation forever.”

Lemon pointed out that rules are always subject to change, pointing out that the Constitution has amendments. He then read from Dr. King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” specifically the passage in which he calls out the “white moderate” who claims to want change but stands in its way out of convenience. To Lemon, Sinema and Manchin are those “white moderates.”

“You’re supposed to be a Democrat who espouses to the ideals of Dr. King? That’s bulls*it,” he said. “That’s BS. And you should be ashamed of yourself. You are a hypocrite.”

Conor Ryan has seen his fair share of whales, and his Twitter handle—@whale_nerd—isn’t just a cutesy nickname. Ryan was just 14 years old when he published his first peer-reviewed scientific paper on killer whales with his best friend, Peter Wilson, in 2001. As a wildlife photographer, a zoologist specializing in marine biology and an expert in baleen whales and small cetaceans, he knows when he’s looking at something special in the sea.

In other words, when Conor Ryan says his mind is “completely blown” by a whale sighting, you know it’s a big deal. Seeing 1,000 fin whales at once? That’s a very big deal.

Fin whales are the second-largest animal in the world, second only to the blue whale. In the 20th century, fin whales were hunted to near extinction before commercial whaling was outlawed. Nearly 725,000 were killed in the Southern Hemisphere alone in the mid- 1900s, and though whaling is no longer a threat, fin whales are still on the endangered species list.

Fin whales get their name from an easy-to-spot fin on their backs. Imagine seeing 1,000 of any endangered species in one location, much less 1,000 of these 85-foot, 80-ton whales all feeding in a single location.

Ryan captured the scene on film and shared it on Twitter, writing, “We found about 1000 fin whales over a 5×5 mile area off South Orkney. Blue and humpback also mixed in. Mind completely blown.” The video shows a cluster of whales spouting as far as the eye can see.

According to The Guardian, Ryan spotted the whales from the National Geographic Endurance polar cruiser, in an area between the South Orkney Islands and the Antarctic peninsula. Their ship was in an area with four large krill fishing vessels, which explains the feeding frenzy.

Ryan said it might be “one of the largest aggregations of fin whales ever documented” and that his estimate of 1,000 whales was a conservative one.

“Words fail me,” Ryan told The Guardian. “I have seen maybe 100 fins here before in previous years. Thousands of chinstrap penguins, petrels, and albatrosses, too … It was unusually calm weather and unusually good visibility.”

Though commercial whaling laws have greatly reduced the decimation of whale populations we saw in the 1900s, whales still face threats from human activity. According to NOAA, the main threat to fin whales today is vessel strikes. Cargo and cruise boat ships have increased in number in the past few decades, which increases the risk of running into whales, but they aren’t the only ships that pose a threat. Last year, two dead fin whales had to be dislodged from the hull of an Australian Navy ship after it pulled into the naval pier in San Diego. The fact that they are still considered endangered means we have to stay vigilant about their protection.

But as author Philip Hoare wrote in The Guardian, “In a world constrained by woe and threats to democracy…1,000 fin whales can’t help but lift our hearts.” Such a number is decidedly good news, which is always worth celebrating and which provides a beacon of hope that we can make impactful changes that help our planet when we choose to.

If you’ve seen any of the Progressive Insurance commercials featuring Dr. Rick and laughed, then you’re probably in danger of becoming like your parents at some time in the near future.

In the ads, Dr. Rick explains to a millennial woman that if there are so many throw pillows on your couch that you’re not sure where to sit, then you’ve become your mom. In another clip, he reminds a millennial man who’s coaching a plumber beneath his sink that “You hired him.”

Progressive has labeled the process of becoming your parents as “parentamorphosis.”

We are all on a collision course for the inevitable parentamorphosis but when does it happen for most? According to the Daily Mail, a 2019 study commissioned by Dr. Julian De Silva, a plastic surgeon in London, has found that most women start becoming their mothers at around the age of 33 and men begin the process of turning into their fathers a year later, at 34.

The poll surveyed 2,000 people.

“We all turn into our parents at some point in our lives—and that is something to be celebrated,” said De Silva. “Becoming parents is the main trigger and lifestyle factors are also important.”

Early signs that women are becoming their mothers include watching the same television shows, using the same sayings and picking up similar hobbies. If you’ve ever told a child, “If you’re bored then you’re boring,” then you may have already become your mother.

For men, the signs include adopting their father’s political opinions, shutting off lights in rooms that aren’t being used and listening to an oldies radio station instead of today’s hits.

If you’ve ever considered giving yourself three hours to get to the airport, you’ve probably already become your dad.

But is becoming your parents such a bad thing? There’s something comforting about setting aside the need to appear cool or keeping up with the latest trends. There’s something nice about choosing clothing based on comfort level and having life dialed in to the point where you’ve got most things down to a system.

There’s a great line in the Bob Dylan song “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)” where he sings, “he not busy being born, is busy dying.”

When we become our parents are we continuing to grow and expand our horizons? Or have we decided to become closed-minded and rigid? I guess that depends on who your parents are. But far too often when people settle down and have kids they end up becoming set in their ways as the world around them continues to change.

Shane Snow wrote in the Harvard Business Review that researchers have identified a simple idea that helps people remain open-minded as they age: “intellectual humility.”

Researchers believe that by practicing this concept, people retain the willingness to change plus the wisdom to know when they shouldn’t. They also found that people who display “openness to new experiences” are also more likely to keep up with a changing world.

It seems the key to successfully completing the parentamorphosis process is to embrace the wonderful aspects of getting older like having a few more dollars in the bank, a well-stocked pantry and the wherewithal to get an oil change before it’s too late while also realizing that it’s important to—as Bob Dylan says—keep “busy being born.”

This past weekend, Kanye West returned with “Eazy,” his first official release of the year. It features Compton rapper The Game and production from Hit-Boy, for what seems like the first offering from West’s upcoming album, Donda 2. The song also received a lot of attention for shots West directed at Pete Davidson, who is dating his ex-wife Kim Kardashian. “God saved me from that crash,” West raps. “Just so I can beat Pete Davidson’s ass.” Davidson has yet to issue any type of response to the song, but according to HipHopDX, it’s forced the SNL comedian to make an adjustment to his life.

The publication reports that Davidson has hired more security to ensure his safety after getting dissed by West. Reports say that friends close to him claim he isn’t concerned about a future interaction with the rapper, but rather, he’s worried that the rapper’s fans will potentially harm him as a result of the song. “His devoted followers listen to his songs and act upon them,” a source that HipHopDX cited says. “That’s why Pete is now using security.”

This comes after Kanye claimed that security at Kim Kardashian’s home wouldn’t allow him to enter and see his children because Davidson was allegedly there at the time.

As for Davidson, it was announced that he and James DeMonaco, the director of the Purge series, will team up for a horror film set at a sinister retirement home.

For the last couple years, J.K. Rowling has been on a bizarre tear, torching the good will she amassed by creating one of the most popular franchises in the world by deciding to go after trans people. And it’s cost her. She was barely mentioned in a recent reunion between the original film series’ stars, all of whom have spoken out in some degree against her beliefs. One of them is Rupert Grint, the erstwhile Ron Weasley, although in a recent interview he tried to thread the needle between distancing himself from what she says and being diplomatic.

The interview is with The Times, and in it Grint very briefly addresses a controversy he’s spoken about several times in the past. To him, Rowling is like one of those relatives who has terrible beliefs.

“I don’t necessarily agree with everything my auntie says, but she’s still my auntie,” Grint said, adding, “It’s a tricky one.”

Back in the summer of 2020, when Rowling first launched into an inexplicable tirade against the trans community, Grint unemphatically sided with the people she was trashing.

“Trans women are women. Trans men are men. We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgment,” Grint said in a statement. “I firmly stand with the trans community and echo the sentiments expressed by many of my peers.”

At the time, Grint’s co-stars had similar sentiments. ““Transgender women are women,” said Daniel Radcliffe.” Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.”

Emma Watson said much the same thing. “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are,” she said.

Are people watching The Book of Boba Fett? Anecdotally, I think they are. At least when I talk to people, everyone seems to be pretty much caught up. Though, it certainly doesn’t have the social media cache as The Mandalorian did. But The Mandalorian had a secret weapon with Grogu (aka Baby Yoda). If there were a Star Wars character specifically made to cross over into the realm of more casual Star Wars fans, well that was certainly it. (I don’t think 8D8 has that kind of draw, sadly. Though I’d like to see people try. 8D8 deserves your respect.) A cute creature, surrounded by mystery. No, The Book of Boba Fett does not have that and, ergo, is not as meme-able. If that even matters. Maybe it does, to a point. Maybe Boba Fett should recruit Grogu to be part of his team. I bet Grogu could come in handy during an underworld fight.

Regardless, there’s a scene in this week’s The Book of Boba Fett that made me feel elation in a, “Whoa, will you look at that?,” kind of way. A little over midway through the episode, during a flashback, Boba Fett, along with his now new partner, Fennec Shand, returns to the Sarlacc in search of his armor – not knowing that shortly after he escaped the Sarlacc the armor was stolen by Jawas. While shining a spotlight out of his starship* into the mouth of the Sarlacc, unsurprisingly, the Sarlacc attacks and tries to drag the whole ship back into the pit.

*During this episode, Boba Fett only refers to his starship as his “Firespray gunship,” which has been an ongoing flareup in the bowels of Star Wars fandom. Until recently the ship has been known as Slave I, but, understandably, Lucasfilm has been distancing itself from that title that is used to sell children’s toys, which, lately, have been branded as “Boba Fett’s Starship.” (I remember when I got the original Kenner toy and, even back then, I remember thinking that name seemed grim.) Of course, there are people mad about this, even though the term Slave I is never said in The Empire Strikes Back, and doesn’t even appear in Return of the Jedi. And, as much as I can remember, is never spoken in Attack of the Clones. (I’m not going to rewatch Attack of the Clones to make sure, even though I firmly believe it’s the best of the Prequel Trilogy.)

But speaking of that old Kenner toy, this scenario, Boba Fett, who has escaped from the Sarlacc, returning with his starship and then fighting the Sarlacc with his starship is something that played out, crudely, numerous times in my backyard. And there it was! I honestly couldn’t contain my excitement to see Fett, in his ship, fighting the Sarlacc. (Though, sadly, Fett didn’t use my script, which I believe used the phrase, “Take THAT, Sarlacc!”)

(Also, I wish the Sarlacc had a name. It’s like when we learned Wequay wasn’t a character’s name, but a species name. Since there are lots of Sarlaccs, it would be great if this individual Sarlacc was named Mark, or something. Yeah, I get this Sarlacc is identified by location, being in the Pit of Carkoon, but he or she deserved better than being identified by its address. Maybe its name was Carkoon?)

And then to top it off with Fennec Shand dropping a seismic charge to finally kill the Sarlacc, with that great noise it makes from Attack of the Clones, made me applaud. (I remember when Attack of the Clones was released on DVD I had just bought my first home theater, with a rear projection HDTV and a 5.1 audio setup. When people would come over I would show the seismic charge scene to “show it off.” In retrospect, maybe Attack of the Clones was not the movie to try to recruit fellow home theater enthusiasts, but whatever.)

Anyway, RIP, Sarlacc, your reign of terror is over. Or, in the immortal words of Boba Fett, circa my back yard in 1983, “Take THAT, Sarlacc!”

Every player’s NBA journey is different, but each has a common thread of trying to find one’s place in the league. Some find that early in their careers, but for others it can take some time, time that often isn’t afforded in a league that demands immediate results.

That’s where Stanley Johnson finds himself in his seventh season in the NBA, seizing an opportunity with the Lakers courtesy of what was initially a hardship 10-day that has since become a pair of regular 10-day deals. His future remains in balance, as he’ll likely have to wait until after the trade deadline to find out if he’ll have a roster spot in L.A. or need to latch on elsewhere, but his performance through 10 games (five of which have come in a starting capacity) with the Lakers has more than earned him a spot somewhere in the NBA again.

It’s been quite the journey for Johnson, the former eighth overall pick in the 2015 Draft by Detroit, who has bounced around the league from Detroit to New Orleans to Toronto, struggling to find his place. At the end of his tenure in Toronto, Johnson had a sitdown with team president Masai Ujiri, who gave him the brutal honesty that, as Johnson told Marc Spears of The Undefeated, he needed to hear, as Ujiri flat out told him he was “bad at basketball.”

“That was a real honest conversation. That’s what I needed to hear,” Johnson said. “In the NBA, honesty is not always the first and foremost thing that people want to give you because it’s not the easiest thing to say to people that are professionals. I’ve been playing basketball all my life. I’m pretty damn good at basketball, so to tell me I’m bad at basketball, it’s a hard conversation to have with a professional athlete.

“It takes a different type of man to tell you that to your face and not in a pessimistic way, in a constructive way. What are you going to do? Are you going to take [it poorly] or are you going to do something about it? I felt like I want to do something about it. I’m 25 years old. I know I’ve been fortunate. I’ve been in the league for a long time because I got in early, but I’m not even anywhere close to my prime, anywhere close to the player that I can be in my life.”

Johnson took that message from Ujiri and used it to fuel his work, recognizing that opportunities weren’t going to be there forever. Being a former top-10 pick tends to extend a player’s shelf life when they get off to a poor start, but after six seasons there was no longer a guaranteed roster spot waiting for him. After landing a 10-day in Chicago, only to go into protocols himself, Johnson ended up in L.A. where he’s given the Lakers a much-needed defensive presence, while also being encouraged by his veteran star teammates to attack and be aggressive when the time is right on the offensive end.

The result has been the best stretch of basketball of Johnson’s career, averaging 6.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 20.8 minutes per game, shooting 52.2 percent from the field — by far the best efficiency of his time in the NBA. He’s still not a shooter, but embracing his physicality and becoming a better finisher has taken the pressure off of his jump shot. On the other end, he uses that physicality to bring strong point of attack defense to a team that has desperately needed that, and in 10 games he’s become a fan favorite in L.A., to the point that fans are mad he hasn’t been signed for the season yet.

That will sort itself out eventually, as the Lakers certainly will not rush to a decision on him before the deadline as they want to maintain roster flexibility for trades, but for a player who seemed on his way out of the league, being able to accept some pointed, constructive criticism from Ujiri has seemingly given him new-life in his basketball career.

I rarely Monday morning quarterback rappers’ album rollouts (read: constantly), but if there was anything I think Cordae could have done differently in promoting his new album From A Bird’s Eye View, it would be to make “Chronicles” the lead single. The track is just a winner, finding a soulful pocket where he and guests HER and Lil Durk can relay their relatable narratives of romance with a catchy chorus and magnetic chemistry. Fortunately, Cordae is still highlighting the nostalgic track, releasing the moonlit music video today after a short tease on social media.

The video is similarly cozy, revolving around a diner at night, where patrons and employees do their best to spark romantic connections. Cordae plays one of the line cooks, kicking game to a pretty waitress, while HER is there on a date with her own boo thang. Meanwhile, Lil Durk hangs out in the parking lot, hatting up his own romantic interest, and all three perform from atop the hood of a kitted-out convertible.

While it could be argued that “Chronicles” is among the strongest tracks on the album alongside “C Carter” (in fact, I do argue as much in my review of the album), the two singles, “Super” and “Sinister” with Lil Wayne, at least showcased Cordae’s deft lyricism and delivery, and his live performances for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts and The Tonight Show gave an intriguing preview of his upcoming From A Bird’s Eye View tour.

It stars a practically unrecognizable Lily James convincingly bringing Anderson to life while Sebastian Stan plays Lee. The limited series breaks down the pair’s combustible romance, the theft and release of their private home videos, and how the whole scandal affected their personal and professional lives.

Rick & Morty: Season 5 (animated series streaming 2/5)

The fifth season of this beloved Adult Swim animated comedy is finally coming to Hulu this February. Expect more hijinks and humor but with more episodic adventures and a huge new multiverse of threats.

Nightmare Alley (2021) (film streaming 2/1)

Guillermo del Toro’s latest haunting fantasy drama starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, and Rooney Mara comes to the streaming platform this month. If you didn’t catch it in theaters, the film follows Cooper’s Stan, a carny-turned-performance-psychic who gets involved with Blanchett’s psychologist who helps him scam rich people out of their money. Things, naturally, end up bloody and bad.

The Kings Man (2021) (film streaming 2/18)

Matthew Vaughn’s latest spy action-thriller serves as a prequel to his highly-successful Kingsmen series, following Ralph Fiennes’ Orlando, a Duke who starts the secret organization during World War II and the death of his wife. Orlando recruits other nobles and his inner circle to take down a man named Rasputin who is working to topple the Russian royal line and influence the direction of the war.
