Want to be an excellent conversationalist? You should know the 43:57 rule.

When we think about gifted conversationalists, we’re more likely to think of great talkers—those who wow us with their insights, wit, and charm. However, communication experts believe that if you want to make a great impression on someone, knowing how to listen goes a long way.

Those of us who love being verbose may think the world loves us because of how well we can talk. But the person sitting in front of you has a lot to say, and nothing makes them feel better during a conversation than your undivided attention.

As the old saying goes, we never quite remember everything someone has said to us, but we’ll never forget how they made us feel. When you actively listen to your conversation partner, they feel that you value them and are receptive to their needs. It also eases any feelings of conflict or resentment.

After a good conversation, the person you spoke with should think, “Wow, that person really gets me,” instead of, “It was like I didn’t even exist.”

A study from 2016 on sales calls did an excellent job of quantifying the amount we should speak versus listen during a conversation. A marketing director at Gong.io analyzed 25,537 sales calls using artificial intelligence and found that the interactions where the salesperson talked 43% of the time and listened 57% of the time had the highest sales yield.

This finding has come to be known as the 43:57 rule.

Even though the study was conducted on business calls, the reason that it works should apply to social conversations as well. Paying more attention helps a salesperson identify the client’s needs and makes them feel comfortable spending money because they know it’s with someone who understands their interests.

It’s the same as a social situation where the person you speak to wants to know they are valued and you respect what they say.

This is excellent advice, but sometimes it’s hard to listen when you’re in a fun conversation and have a lot to say. Kate Murphy, author of “You’re Not Listening,” says it’s all about staying calm.

“Deep breaths are always good. They’re always good. Because it…calms down that fear response. It helps you get more centered,” Murphy told WBUR. “But also to develop your curiosity. Like I said, make it more important to be curious than to be right. And to go into every conversation with that mindset of how could I be wrong? Instead of, let me prove how I’m right.”

“That’s how you develop creative ideas. It’s how you cooperate. It’s how you find middle ground, or at least a peaceable existence,” Murphy added.

The idea that to be a great conversationalist one should master the art of listening is a bit counterintuitive. But, if you feel that you have a lot to say in conversations and can be interesting to listen to, imagine how great that’ll make others feel when you show that you enjoy listening to them as well. It’s a virtuous cycle where everyone wins.

This 4-year-old’s reaction coming home from school is all of us after a long day

There’s one thing you can say about little kids that’s pretty consistent no matter who the kid is, and it’s that they’re brutally honest. Whether you have something stuck in your teeth or you’ve gained weight, a small child will inform you – loudly, and usually in front of others. But one preschooler’s moment of honesty is going viral for how relatable it is.

An exhausted and cranky 4-year-old named Jude has had enough. The little boy had just gotten home from school when he must’ve been asked something before the camera started rolling because his response was a #same moment.

“Listen. No, do you hear me? I’m cranky, I’m tired, I worked hard at school,” Jude says to his dad.

Jude’s mom, Amber Tinker uploaded the video to TikTok where it went viral with over 14 million views and over 1.5 million likes. The tiny grumpy human was clearly not interested in whatever shenanigans his dad was up to and he let him know it.

Jude’s dad, Justin Tinker was attempting to tease the boy about messing with him later but Jude was having none of it. The preschooler quickly repeated that he was cranky and tired after working hard at school. He mumbles something as he walks towards a barn when his dad stops him.

“I’ve already got everything fed and watered. I already got the eggs, I did your job cause I knew you was tired,” Justin calls out.

Though his dad did his chores for him, Jude still didn’t feel like he got his point across because later in the video he repeats how cranky and tired he is. Both of his parents explained they also worked hard today and were tired but it was obvious that Jude out tired them all. In the end he declared he was getting a bath tonight. Maybe his mom will bring him a cold Capri Sun and light some candles while he soaks in a bubble bath. Preschool must be rough these days.

Woman pranks man into thinking skin shedding is a common PMS symptom and it’s comedy gold

Unless they are working OBGYNS, had a bunch of sisters growing up, or chronically on WebMD, odds are that many men don’t have a detailed clinical knowledge of all the ins-and-outs of the female menstrual cycle. Heck, it can be perplexing enough to those that actually have menstrual cycles.

Apparently, all of this mystery surrounding that time of the month can make for excellent prank fodder.

In a video shared onto Instagram by @hairlookslondon, a girl films herself in front of a mirror peeling off either a sheer face mask…which just so happens to look like she’s actually shedding skin off her face. Granted, it could be real skin after a chemical peel of some sort. But one thing it’s definitely not is a PMS symptom.

But she tells her boyfriend it is anyway.

In the clip, we see a shocked young man ask in horror “what is that?” as flesh pulls from the girl’s face.

Nonchalantly, the woman replies, “my skin…It sheds every month. Surely you knew that Aaron.”

No, Aaron most certainly did not know that.

She takes it one step further by saying that her entire body will soon shed, like a lizard. It happens to girls every month, for their time of the month. Duh.

The look on his face when she politely asks him to throw away the lifeless shreds…priceless.

Watch:

In case anyone here needs this: skin shedding is most definitely not something that happens during a menstrual cycle. Shedding of uterine lining? Sure. But skin? Nah.

If you thought the video itself was hilarious, get ready to crack up at the comments women left playing along with the ruse.

“When woman live together for a longer period of time, related or not related to each other, we’ll start to synchronize shedding as well 🦎😮💨”

“PMS stands for Peeling My Skin… I thought everyone knew that.”

“Wait until you have kids!!!!…you shed so much more!!!! 😭”

“Little known fact: Garden sheds were originally invented so women had somewhere private to do their monthly shed. It’s an excellent fertilizer too.”

Another little known “fact”: shedding apparently varies widely across the world!

“In Jamaica, when the women shed their skin we go into the mountains where the shedding trees are and cover ourselves in shed tree sap to help the skin shed faster. It feels so good to finally talk about it.”

“As a Muslim woman myself, we aren’t allowed to share our shedding cycle with men in our family except husband. Hoping we will get there one day, where everyone can talk about this more openly.”

“In Germany when we shed we give the skin to make sausages.”

“In Brazil there are some indigenous tribes that bury the shed in the woods so the plants grow stronger and help the forest regenerate.”

“I’m Japanese. We have loads of beauty clinics here where they help our skins to shed properly. You know when we tried to shed in our teens? It was such hassle and some parts wouldn’t come off properly so it left spots. In clinics, they massage and plump the skin so it peels off in one piece from head to toe, it’s sooooo satisfying…”

“My Swedish grandmother made tea from her dried skin sheddings. Added a tiny bit of wild honey. It’s a great way to get your magnesium.”

Some kindly chimed in with their own “shedding tips.”

“Drinking loads of coconut water and eating watermelon a week before the shed starts has really helped me. It just peels off faster and easier. Hope this helps those who face difficulties with their shed. Staying hydrated is the key.”

“I feed my pets with the shedded skin parts, great source of collagen, especially for senior dogs.”

A few even praised this woman for trying to normalize this deeply guarded secret among women.

I’ve been with my husband 15 years and he’s only seen me shed once – I blamed it on a sunburn. We should normalize this

Others…weren’t so happy she publicly revealed something so “sacred.”

“I can’t believe she allowed him to see her shed. I do mine in private.”

“The fact that someone would come on the internet and publicly shed is weird AF 🥴 it’s supposed to be a private intimate phenomenon but you posting it for everyone to see.”

Gosh, the comedy gold just keeps going and going. Kudos to the community for understanding the assignment. Hope that fella isn’t too traumatized though.

Smart mom leaves babysitter a list of ‘add-on’ chores to make more money if she chooses

A mother in Missouri has found a way to maximize date night with her husband. She left a note for her babysitter, giving her options to make more side cash by completing small tasks around the home.

The goal was to have a night out and to return to a cleaner and better-organized home. It makes sense. Most of the time, babysitters just sit around while the kid sleeps, so why not make their time more productive and profitable?

Katrina Ivan, a science teacher, posted the list she sent her babysitter on TikTok and the video received over 1.5 million views.

“You are more than welcome to hang out and watch TV all night, but if you want to make some extra $, these jobs are up for grabs,” Katrina wrote to her babysitter, a senior in high school whom she’s known for 4 years.

When the babysitter saw the list, she was excited to get to work and started cleaning the windows 10 minutes after Katrina and her husband left the house. Katrina realized her plan was working when she saw her cleaning the windows through her Ring camera. “She was like, ‘Heck ya!’ and got to work right away,” Katrina told Today.com. “I left all the supplies out for her so she didn’t have to feel weird hunting around for things.”

By the end of the night, the babysitter was able to clean the mirrors and windows, organize the toys, vacuum the couch and scrub and organize the silverware drawer.

“I think this is a great opportunity for your babysitter. You’re giving a choice, and I love that,” Lisa B wrote in the comments on the video. “This is a great idea!! Sometimes it’s boring to just to sit and watch TV. This makes time go by quicker and sometimes it’s things I would do to help,” Del added.

Most commenters applauded Katrina’s idea, although some thought she could pay a little better.

“I think $10 is too cheap for some of these tasks considering the amount of work/size of the mess,” Liz wrote. In a follow-up video, Katrina broke down the money she paid the babysitter that night.

Katrina agreed that the prices could go up a bit. “I’ll definitely be restructuring the prices to make this more fair in the future,” she wrote. However, she added that she paid the babysitter $75 for the night just to watch her 2-year-old son, who was asleep most of the time.

All in all, the sitter made $28.75 an hour, tax-free. Not bad at all.

In another follow-up, Katrina interviewed the babysitter, who said she enjoyed making some extra money. “That sounds great,” she said.

What questions do you have for the newly famous babysitter? She’s along for the ride, and enjoys the spotlight. Loving the money, and crushing the jobs we leave for her. Sorry friends, but she’s not available to book-this kid is wayyy to busy between date night babysitting for us, earning perfect grades, being involved in a zillion after school activiites, and taking night time Fire/EMS classes at night so she can start her CAREER fresh out of high school. Do I sound a little proud?!?

Nicole Kidman shares the unconventional marriage rule she has with husband Keith Urban

Long before Nicole Kidman began her long-term relationship with AMC theaters, she was committed to husband and country singer Keith Urban. The two have happily been together since 2006—which is a good run for any modern day marriage, but most certainly a Hollywood one.

And perhaps their nearly decades-long success can be partially attributed to one surprising communication rule: no texting.

While appearing on the Something To Talk About podcast in 2023, Kidman shared that she was the one who initiated the unconventional agreement.

“We never text each other, can you believe that? We started out that way – I was like, ‘If you want to get a hold of me, call me…”I wasn’t really a texter.,” the “Moulin Rouge” actress shared.

She added that while Urban did attempt texting her a few items early on, he eventually switched when Kidman wasn’t very responsive. And now, 18 years later, they only call each other.

“We just do voice to voice or skin to skin, as we always say. We talk all the time and we FaceTime but we just don’t text because I feel like texting can be misrepresentative at times…I don’t want that between my lover and I,” she told Parade

.

There are, of course, some pros and cons to calling over texting. Research has shown that people who call feel more connected to one another vs. texting, with the voice being an integral component of bonding. As our society becomes increasingly more distant and lonely, finding those moments might be more important than ever.

At the same time, calling can invoke a lot more anxiety compared to texting, which could lead someone to not communicating at all. Also, I don’t know about you, but the thought of having to call my partner for mundane things like “don’t forget the eggs” would drive me crazy.

But regardless of whether or not you adopt Kidman and Urban’s no-texting rule, perhaps the bigger takeaway is that relationship longevity depends on being able to establish your own rules. One that feels good and that each partner is able to stick to. Especially when it comes to communication.

As Urban himself told E! News at the CMT Music Awards, “I have no advice for anybody,You guys figure out whatever works for you…We’re figuring it out. You figure it out. Everybody’s different. There’s no one size fits all.”

Luckily, there are many ways to have good text hygiene, without having to do away with it completely. Very Well Mind suggests to avoid texting too many questions, and to be respectful of your partner’s schedule (probably best to not text them while they’re sleeping just to say “hey,” for example). Nor should texting be used to argue or deal with conflict. Lastly, probably save the lengthy, in-depth conversations for a phone call. Fifteen heart emojis are totally fine though.

Kesha Made This Independence Day Extra Special By Sharing Her First Post-Dr. Luke Single, ‘Joyride’

Kesha has a lot of independence to celebrate today. Most obviously is Independence day, the 4th Of July. But, she also dropped a new single, “Joyride,” that marks independence in two ways: It’s her first song not released on a Dr. Luke-related record label, and it’s her first release on her own label, Kesha Records.

As for the song, it’s appropriately celebratory. It’s a happy pop banger that sees Kesha letting loose as she sings on the chorus, “I’m just looking for a joyride, joyride / I’m just looking for a good time tonight / Baby, I want you to.”

In June 2023, Kesha and Dr. Luke’s long-running legal battle finally came to an end: Dr. Luke sued Kesha for alleging that he drugged and raped her in 2005, but the two ended up settling the dispute. Kesha said in a statement, “Only God knows what happened that night. As I have always said, I cannot recount everything that happened. I am looking forward to closing the door on this chapter of my life and beginning a new one. I wish nothing but peace to all parties involved.”

This past March, Kesha shared a tearful video and a post celebrating the “first day I’ve owned my voice in 19 years.”

Zach Bryan Is Having The Most American 4th Of July Ever As He Drops His New Album Featuring A Bruce Springsteen Duet

Zach Bryan is in the thick of his Quittin’ Time Tour, and it might the most falsely advertised tour of 2024 because Bryan does not know how to quit. The country star dropped The Great American Bar Scene on Thursday, July 4 (very on the nose, Zach), which is his third studio album release since May 2022. The LP is stuffed with 19 songs, including “Sandpaper” featuring Bruce Springsteen.

In late March, Springsteen surprised everyone and performed “Sandpaper” with Bryan during Bryan’s Quittin’ Time Tour show at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

“Winter was a drag / But spring was a friend / I’ll love you ’til the summer comes back again,” Bryan and Springsteen sing in the song about stubborn, undying love. Billboard‘s Melinda Newman pointed out that the “Sandpaper” beat is eerily similar to Springsteen’s 1984 song “I’m On Fire,” so now I can’t unhear that. Basically, “Sandpaper” is peak Americana.

Bryan’s The Great American Bar Scene also features John Mayer and John Moreland.

“This record tested the hell out of me, and I failed most days it did, but we finally made it,” Bryan wrote on Instagram. “I’m glad this chapter happened, but I’m more glad that it’s coming to an end. Happy Fourth of July to the best people in the world. How lucky are we?”

Listen to “Sandpaper” above.

‘SEAL Team’ Season 7: Everything We Know So Far About The Farewell To Team Bravo (Update For July 2024)

SEAL Team
CBS/Paramount

David Boreanz knows TV longevity. He’s followed up his Bones and Buffy stints with a long run on a Dad TV staple that will soon be ending its military-based tour. This series also fits perfectly into the Paramount+ library after several seasons on CBS, and now, the seventh season will take these members of U.S. Navy’s elite force home (actually, the opposite of home).

By the way, if you know anybody (including any dad) who needs/wants to catch up on the sixth season and hasn’t done so yet, that entire season is streaming for free courtesy of Paramount+. Beyond that, a final mission is now at hand for Bravo Team, which is all in, all the time, so the show has undoubtedly planned to do the same with a proper ending. Let’s talk about what to expect from this seventh season.

Plot

There’s a “[r]eckoning upon us,” according to Boreanaz in an Instagram post from earlier this year regarding Season 7. That declaration followed Fall 2023’s confirmation that this would be the final season, and filming began in January to wrap up the story with assumptions that the previously announced movie was either not happening or in limbo. Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva previously reported that “I hear the movie is not dead but there has been no talk about it over the last year and it seems to be on the back burner and not in active development at the moment,” yet Deadline’s Peter White followed up with confirmation that the movie did indeed get the ax.

So, the seventh season will contain the team’s final mission(s), and Paramount+ ponied up a synopsis that promises a crescendo:

At a moment’s notice, Bravo Team is ripped from their families and deployed across the globe to help the United States compete against foreign superpowers. As the military landscape shifts, personal lives, teammates and priorities change too, setting the stage for an emotional ending. Don’t miss Bravo Team’s dramatic farewell.

Where does this story pick up? As viewers will recall, Special Warfare Operator First Class Clay Spenser (Max Thieriot) passed away at the end of the sixth season, and Theriot revealed that no plans existed for him to return in flashback mode. This death, however, will likely bring the series’ momentum full circle in a way, given that Boreanaz’s Master Chief Special Warfare Operator had previously been propelled into action while grieving the death of another teammate. As well, plenty of questions now surround Bravo’s future, considering the trauma that they had endured throughout their tours.

With the return of the show, however, and as the synopsis revealed, they are back in action. Thieriot additionally revealed that filming was set to happen in Colombia, and part of his late character’s energy will be filled by Drew Franklin, portrayed by Beau Knapp, “a smooth talker” who will be “a sign of [Bravo Team’s] “problem-child status in the eyes of the DEVGRU powers that be.” Yup, the stakes shall remain high until this series bids farewell to Bravo.

Exec producers Spencer Hudnut and Christopher Chulack are disappointed that the show is coming to an end but grateful for their time spent telling armed-services members’ stories of bravery. In a statement (via TV Line), the duo suggested they are now asking viewers to carry on those duties:

“We are deeply grateful to our amazing group of actors, writers, directors and talented crew, especially the hundreds of veterans who have worked on this show. While we wish we could continue to shine a spotlight on areas where we can do better for our service members even after Season 7 comes to an end, it is our hope that the collective SEAL Team community will stay in the fight when it comes to protecting our protectors.”

Cast

Boreanz is still on top, for now. The series co-stars A.J. Buckley, Jessica Paré, Raffi Barsoumian, Neil Brown Jr., and Toni Trucks. Max Theiriot will obviously not be back as Clay, but Beau Knapp joins the cast for this final round.

Release Date

August 11 will be the beginning of the end of SEAL Team (with a 10-episode season) on Paramount+

Trailer

As promised, this sure looks emotional, not to mention momentous. Not only is there a “new era of warfare” uttered but also a “welcome to the jungle.”

‘The White Lotus’ Season 3: An Update On Everything We Know About The New Season (Update For July 2024)

white lotus
hbo

What a fascinating career Mike White has.

He’s a credited writer on The Emoji Movie (one of the creatively bankrupt films of the 2010s), as well as the sixth Minions movie, but he also wrote the endlessly watchable School of Rock and created two of HBO’s best shows in recent memory: Enlightened and The White Lotus. The former ran for two razor-sharp seasons (seriously, it’s great), while the latter is returning for season 3 next year with a new setting, new cast, and new memes.

Here’s everything we know about The White Lotus season 3, including plot details and when it’s expected to premiere.

Plot

If the theme of The White Lotus season 1 had to be summed up in one word, it would be “money.” Season 2? “Sex.” For season 3, which is set at a White Lotus in Thailand, it could be “spirituality.” Back in 2022, creator Mike White told Variety, “I think the third season would be maybe a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality. It feels like it could be a rich tapestry to do another round at White Lotus.” That appears to still be the case.

“[Season 3 is] an exploration about spirituality versus the ego,” said HBO head of drama Francesca Orsi. “And it’s set against the Eastern religion. But beyond that, I can’t really speak to some of the character ideas that Mike has.”

The new characters in the “longer, bigger, crazier” season include “a patriarch, a female corporate executive, an actress, a couple of mothers, a country club wife, a misfit, and a yogi.” Maybe it will be a murder mystery, like Clue?

Cast

Season 1 star Alexandra Daddario makes The White Lotus sound like the world’s best job, and Mike White has assembled a stacked ensemble.

First off, there’s Carrie Coon and Walton Goggins, both of whom turn me into the little girl from Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood every time I see them in something. There’s also Leslie Bibb, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, Parker Posey, Dom Hetrakul, Tayme Thapthimthong, Christian Friedel, Morgana O’Reilly, Lek Patravadi, Shalini Peiris, Aimee Lou Wood, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sarah Catherine Hook, Sam Nivola, Nicholas Duvernay, Arnas Fedaravičius, Scott Glenn, and Blackpink’s Lisa Manobal. Now that’s a cast.

But wait, there’s more! Jennifer Coolidge won’t be back for… reasons (unless it’s in twin form). “People are asking me if I’m in it. I can honestly say, to this moment, no one has even mentioned it to me,” she told Today. “I think I’m dead. I think I’m dead right now and may be dead forever.” However, Natasha Rothwell will reprise her role as spa manager Belinda from season 1.

Release Date

The White Lotus returns to HBO for season 3 in 2025, along with It prequel Welcome to Derry, Game of Thrones spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and The Last of Us season 2. Also, Euphoria season 3… maybe.

Trailer

There’s no trailer yet. But please enjoy Jennifer Coolidge being the best.
