Summer Walker’s ‘Still Over It’ Captures The Regret Of A Love That Crashed And Burned

The RX is Uproxx Music’s stamp of approval for the best albums, songs, and music stories throughout the year. Inclusion in this category is the highest distinction we can bestow, and signals the most important music being released throughout the year. The RX is the music you need, right now.

The key to fully understanding the position Summer Walker finds herself in on her new album Still Over It is to remember where she left off. Every story has a prologue, and for Summer, that would be “Nobody Else,” the vulnerable confession towards love that closed her debut album Over It. “I want this, I want this to work out so bad / God, I feel it in my chest at night,” she begs on the track. “I want this, I want this, yeah, yeah / Will never fall out of love with you.” As we all know now, Summer’s wishes went unfulfilled, and while this step into love eventually tore her heart apart, it also gave the world what shaped up to be her magnum opus with Still Over It.

Cardi B says it best at the end of “Bitter.” “Put that drama in your music,” the rapper advises Summer while telling her to not “let b*tches… feel like they have a one-up by destroying your moment by telling your business to the world.” For better or for worse, the best way to regain control of a narrative for a successful musician like Summer is to make that best music of your life, and that’s what is present on Still Over It. Through the project’s 20 songs, Summer issues responses to women that interfered with her relationship, onlookers who questioned her decisions without knowing the entire story, and the very man who caused her heartbreak and destroyed the love she hoped would last a lifetime.

On Still Over It, Summer excellently reinforces that despite the whirlpool of controversy, turmoil, and toxicity that her relationship drowned in, her true desire was a love that was offertory rather than transactional. “All I wanted was for you to stay / It’s the bare minimum for me,” she bellows on “Reciprocate.” “I don’t wanna throw it all away / It’s a good thing, it’s a good thing.” It’s this standard reciprocation, which she asks of her partner and fails to receive, that drives her into a pit of sadness and regret. “You should know my mind by now / And it don’t seem to matter how many times I try,” Summer sings on “You Don’t Know Me” in disenchanted spirits. “But I cry, I say it nice / Yell it out loud, write it down, I’m tired.” It’s tracks like these where Summer uses tender production and her best songwriting to cast her pain through a projector to the world, one so big that it allows all the necessary details of her story to exist and roam free for listeners to digest.

As we progress further and further into Summer’s sophomore album, she’s forced to loosen her resistance towards letting go of a love that once made her melt. Through records like “Insane,” “Constant Bullsh*t,” and “Unloyal” with Ari Lennox, Summer almost jumps out of the moving car that is her relationship, but the unknown dangers that await her once she takes that dive delay this long-overdue exit. The man in question is London On Da Track, the father of her first child, and on “Switch A N***a Out” she uses sheer honesty to explain why she stayed beside him much longer than she should have. “’Cause I don’t want nobody, nobody else but you,” she sings, referencing her Over It closer. “And I used to be on my replacin’ sh*t / I would switch a n**** out so damn quick / If he ain’t gettin’ with my sh*t / But it just ain’t like that with you.”

Just like it would for anyone else, Summer reaches her breaking point through the last third of the album. After failed moments to fully shut the door on “Closure,” “Toxic,” and “Screwin,” Summer finally issues the grand closing for a love that she realizes was truly never meant to be. It brings forth some of the most painful and heartbreaking lyrics on the album. “Cause my heart is breakin,’” she bellows on “Broken Promises.” “I’ve been mistaken / You’re not the man I thought you were / And they tried to warn me.” Another example arrives on “Session 33.” “’Cause a house is not a home when no one’s there,” she notes. “So alone, no one’s there / Should I move on since no one’s here? / You know what you got is good, that’s why you refuse to let me walk out your life.”

Calling Still Over It Summer’s true villain story might be taking things a bit too far. Even her most ruthless moments, like dragging London and his mother on “4th Baby Mama,” seem well-deserved for a woman who was left to spend her “whole f*cking pregnancy alone.” In a perfect world, the happiness Summer exhibited to close Over It was still supposed to be alive and well on her sophomore project. A true love story and a child to raise with this forever partner should’ve been the narrative for her second album. Things were supposed to be different, but to her disappointment, that was not the case. Summer has grown as a singer, songwriter, and overall artist set on bringing her vision to life. However, until she receives the love she truly deserves, Summer Walker will still be over it.

Cam Newton Will Return To The Panthers After Sam Darnold Was Put On The IR

The Carolina Panthers have turned to an old friend in an attempt to bring some stability to their quarterback room. After placing starting signal caller Sam Darnold on the injured reserve due to an injury to his right shoulder, the team announced that Cam Newton will make his way back to Charlotte.

Reports began popping up earlier in the day on Thursday that Newton, who was selected by the team with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft and spent the first nine years of his career there, was meeting with the franchise about a possible reunion. It did not take long for both the team and player to agree to a deal, which was announced by Carolina in short order.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Newton will be signed through the rest of the season on a deal worth up to $10 million with $4.5 million guaranteed.

Newton spent last season with the New England Patriots, which released him prior to the regular season and opted to give the starting job to rookie QB Mac Jones. He posited that the reason for his release was that he would have been viewed as a distraction, while there was some speculation it was due to the fact that Newton was not vaccinated against COVID-19 (Patriots coach Bill Belichick rejected this, while Newton, per Rapoport, has since been vaccinated).

In the aftermath of Darnold’s injury, the Panthers named PJ Walker their starting quarterback while bringing journeyman Matt Barkley in as a backup. Carolina will play the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday before taking on former head coach Ron Rivera and the Washington Football Team the following week. Darnold is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

Radiohead Is Launching A Virtual Exhibition In Your Home

Last week, Radiohead released the monumental 21st anniversary triple album edition of Kid A + Amnesiac + Kid Amnesiae, respectively. Dubbed Kid A Mnesia, the edition sees the band’s fourth and fifth albums released together — as they were initially slated to, in an “ultimate album” of sorts — and adds a a third bonus disc of rare and unreleased material for good measure, featuring new songs like the cryptic “Follow Me Around” and “If You Say The Word.” But the band has not stopped there.

The “Kid A Mnesia Exhibition” is a virtual world of Kid A and Amnesiac brought to life. Sliding doors and portals into the world of Radiohead abound, as if you’re splashing through the many colors of the album’s covers and booklet artwork, set to the sonic elements of the releases. It was originally supposed to be a touring physical installation in major cities, but then that whole pandemic thing happened. So Radiohead and Epic Games partnered to release the exhibition as a free download for PS5, Mac, and PC, that you can watch straight on your home screen.

The entire experience is authentic to the albums, with its pieces being sourced from their music and original artwork. Yet another step into their outside-the-box re-issue, it’s an opportunity to venture deeper into audiovisual sphere of Radiohead.

Watch the trailer for “Kid A Mnesia Exhibition” above. The free download is available on 11/18 for PlayStation 5, or for PC and Mac at the Epic Games store.

The Rock Got His Karaoke On With James Corden And Surprised The Heck Out Of ‘The Price Is Right’ Fans

To promote his new Netflix movie, Red Notice, an uncharacteristically musical Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stopped by The Late Late Show on Wednesday where he belted out some karaoke tunes with host James Corden and surprised an unsuspecting group of The Price Is Right fans.

Instead of sitting down in the studio, Johnson and Corden tooled around the CBS lot in a golf cart where they talked about the actor’s early struggles with making the transition from wrestling to acting. According to Johnson, he was constantly pressured to be thinner and ditch the muscles, and most importantly, don’t call himself The Rock. Obviously, that advice didn’t stick, and Johnson revealed his career hit a major turning point when he stopped trying to pretend to be anything but himself.

“There was no blueprint when I first got here, so you either follow something that you think is the right thing, or you say, ‘F*ck it, I gotta be myself,” he told Corden.

Now, The Rock is a major star, and to drive that point home, Corden pulled up to the studio building where The Price Is Right is filming, and the fans waiting to get into the show absolutely lost their minds. Although, there was a bit of an awkward snag as Johnson sounded noticeably hoarse, and in a noticeable cut, he’s seen holding a glass of water as Corden does most of the talking. Maybe The Rock was feeling a bit under the weather hence the outdoor interview.

However, he seemed to fine moments later when Corden tricked him into singing “You’re Welcome” from Moana before Johnson kicked things up a notch by belting out… The Bee-Gees? Apparently, The Rock likes disco. Are you going to tell him he shouldn’t? Because we’re sure as heck not.

Kyle Kuzma Told Hecklers ‘Without Bron, Cleveland Wouldn’t Be Sh*t’ During His Big Game Against The Cavs

Kyle Kuzma had a nice night in the Washington Wizards‘ 97-94 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday. Kuzma, whom the team acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers in the Russell Westbrook trade over the summer, scored 22 points on 8-for-14 shooting and five rebounds while connecting on six of his nine attempts from three, including a triple with just over 10 seconds remaining to give the Wizards a lead they would not relinquish.

After the game, Kuzma stressed that he was a little extra motivated to have a big night because of some Cavs fans who were giving him a hard time. He went as far as to say that his big night was the fault of these people who would not stop chirping.

“They had a sign up that said, ‘LeBron won Kuzma his ring,’” Kuzma said. “And I said, ‘Without Bron, Cleveland wouldn’t be shit,’ so, they chose violence and I just kept going. So, thank you guys, appreciate it.”

It turns out someone did, indeed, make that sign, along with another that said he took the Cavs’ moneyline on the night.

And after the game, Kuzma showed these people some love by autographing their sign. In the process, he managed to gain a few new fans.

In recent years, there have been a handful of stories of fans crossing lines with players in how they interact with them, so it’s pretty cool to see that Kuzma and these folks had a good back-and-forth. Well, unless you took the Cavs’ moneyline.

The Best Bourbons For Fans Of Fruit-Focused Flavors, According To Bartenders

It’s no secret that bourbon can be pretty sweet. This corn-based whiskey is known for its caramel, honey, butterscotch, vanilla, and sometimes sweet oak flavors. We’ve written about spicy bourbons in the past, but today we’re turning our attention to the fruitier side of bourbon.

When it comes to “fruit” flavors in bourbon, it really depends on what kind of fruit you’re smelling and tasting. Yeasts can impart bright, almost vibrant stone fruits, orchard fruits, sweet florals, berries, fresh citrus, and more. Meanwhile, the barrel (and finishing barrel) can impart darker fruity notes like dates, plums, raisins, dried berries or cherries, candied or dried citrus, and so much more. There’s a lot going on when it comes to fruit in bourbon.

To find the best examples, we asked a handful of notable bartenders and bar professionals to tell us their go-to fruit-centric bourbons to drink this fall (and literally any time of year). Keep scrolling to see all of their cherry, ripe berry, dried apricot, and sweet sherry-filled selections.

Widow Jane 10

Widow Jane 10
Widow Jane

Seamus Banning, bartender at The W Hotel in Philadelphia

ABV: 45.5%

Average Price: $80

Why This Bourbon?

For fruity and rich flavors, my bourbon of choice is Widow Jane 10. The proof of the whiskey isn’t super high and it’s very approachable for any level of a whiskey drinker. The vanilla and holiday spice on your first nose amplifies the almond, cherry, and tropical fruit notes dramatically. Plus, its minerality makes for a smooth sipper this fall.

Maker’s Mark 46

Maker's Mark 46
Maker

Emily Franchy, bartender at Uffda Hospitality in Louisville

ABV: 47%

Average Price: $40

Why This Bourbon?

Maker’s Mark 46 enhances the cherry notes of classic Maker’s with apple and pear. It’s perfect for fall. The extra stave finish brings out even more caramel and oak as well. Get the cask strength version for even more richness, dark fruits, and sweet woodiness.

Angel’s Envy

Angel's Envy Bourbon
Angel

Austin Jacobs, bartender at The London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills, California

ABV: 43.3%

Average Price: $50

Why This Bourbon?

For fruity, rich flavors I love Angel’s Envy Bourbon. What makes them unique is they finish their bourbon in port wine barrels, so it adds notes of those complex, fruity port flavors into the bourbon. The result is delicious with a spicy citrus nose, a thicker mouthfeel than most bourbons, and some fruity flavors like apples, plums, and peaches coming through in the taste.

Four Roses Small Batch

Four Roses Small Batch
Four Roses

Christopher Rodriguez, lead bartender at Lucy Bar in Yountville, California

ABV: 45%

Average Price: $30

Why This Bourbon?

My go-to bourbon for people who are into fruity, rich flavors is Four Roses Small batch. It’s smooth and sweet with a hint of spice that would be perfect for the season (or any season for that matter).

Old Grand-Dad 114

Old Grand-Dad 114
Old Grand-Dad

Mike Fayad, general manager at Hearth and Hill in Park City, Utah

ABV: 57%

Average Price: $30

Why This Bourbon?

Old Granddad 114 is my favorite bourbon for daily drinking. It’s reasonably priced (when and where you can find it), great for cocktails, and packs a flavorful spicy, fruity punch that you’ll go back to again and again.

Blanton’s Single Barrel

Blanton's Single Barrel
Blanton

Lauren Navarro, head bartender at Apothecary 330-A Cocktail Bar in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

ABV: 46.5%

Average Price: $75

Why This Bourbon?

Blanton’s Single Barrel is my go-to bourbon for smooth, rich, and fruity flavors. It has vanilla and caramel notes with big cherry and orchard notes too. It’s a great higher-priced introductory bourbon.

Rabbit Hole Dareringer

Rabbit Hole Dareringer
Rabbit Hole

Nicholas Karel, director of bars, lounges, and beverage at Windsor Court Hotel in New Orleans

ABV: 46.5%

Average Price: $100

Why This Bourbon?

This Rabbit Hole bourbon is finished in sherry casks. It has intense depth with a soft sweetness and notes of raisins and currants. It’s not overly sweet but rich, delicious, and fruity.

Horse Soldier Signature

Horse Soldier Signature
Horse Soldier

Mohamed Khald, food and beverage manager at The Vinoy Renaissance in St. Petersburg, Florida

ABV: 47.5%

Average Price: $65

Why This Bourbon?

Horse Soldier, a local bourbon from St. Pete, is hands down one of the best bourbons. It’s carefully crafted with sweet and spicy notes of caramel, vanilla, honey, dried cherries, and nutmeg and has an undeniably smooth, mellow, and fruity finish.

Eagle Rare 10

Eagle Rare 10
Eagle Rare

Chevy Farrell, beverage director for No Man’s Land in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

ABV: 45%

Average Price: $50

Why This Bourbon?

Eagle Rare is an approachable expression with a solid age statement. On the first approach, toast and caramel notes take over and subtly melt into vanilla, dried fruits, and orange blossom honey finish. This bourbon is a fantastic pick for both new and seasoned drinkers alike and does a good job at highlighting fruit notes.

W.L. Weller Special Reserve

W.L. Weller Special Reserve
Buffalo Trace

Christian Taibi, head mixologist at The Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club in Honolulu, Hawaii

ABV: 45%

Average Price: $83

Why This Bourbon?

Buffalo Trace Distillery is my go-to for most of my American whiskey. The one that stands out (when available) is W.L. Weller Special Reserve. At 90 proof, this wheat bourbon is absolute perfection. It’s soft, sweet, and loaded with fruity, rich flavors.

Knob Creek 9 Year

Knob Creek 9
Knob Creek

Alex Barbatsis, head bartender at The Whistler in Chicago

ABV: 50%

Average Price: $30

Why This Bourbon?

Knob Creek Kentucky Straight Bourbon has some lovely dried apricot notes that come through. It’s a nine-year barrel-aged whiskey that makes for a complex yet mellow pour that really leans into those stone fruit notes.

Four Roses Single Barrel

Four Roses Single Barrel
Four Roses

Christy Bradley, spirit guide at Virgin Hotels in New Orleans

ABV: 50%

Average Price: $50

Why This Bourbon?

For a great, relatively inexpensive, and fruity bourbon, I tend to lean towards Four Roses Single Barrel. It has some lovely pear and cherry hints on the palate along with vanilla and maple syrup.

Buffalo Trace

Buffalo Trace Bourbon
Buffalo Trace

Darron Foy, bar manager at The Flatiron Room in New York City

ABV: 45%

Average Price: $25

Why This Bourbon?

Buffalo Trace Bourbon is a true crowd-pleaser. I don’t think I’ve ever given this to a patron and they didn’t like it. Stone fruit with demerara sugar plays with oak and a subtle yet slightly sweet spice note. It works great neat, on ice, or mixed into a cocktail.

Emily Ratajkowski explains why women are ‘obsessed’ with Pete Davidson

Pete Davidson, 27, has earned the reputation as one of Hollywood’s most prolific ladies’ men for dating some of the most beautiful A-list women over the past three years. However, there are a lot of people out there who don’t understand the “Saturday Night Live” star’s appeal.

Davidson is tattooed from head to toe. He suffers from Crohn’s disease, has done multiple stints in rehab, describes himself as looking like a “crack baby” and only recently moved out of his mother’s basement on Staten Island.

But he’s also been one of the most popular cast members on “SNL” for the past seven years and co-wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed, “The King of Staten Island.”

Here’s a brief rundown of Davidson’s romantic ties over the past few years.

Ariana Grande (2018)

Davidson and the pop megastar revealed they were in a relationship at the end of May 2018 and quickly got engaged. The pair called off their engagement and broke up in October 2018 after just five months together.

Kate Beckinsale (2019)

The two were caught kissing at a New York Rangers game in January 2019, but the pair broke up that April because Davidson had to go to rehab and Beckinsale was busy making movies.

Margaret Qualley (2019)

Davidson and the “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” star had a brief relationship at the end of 2019. Her mother, Andie McDowell, called their flirtation “nice.”

Kaia Gerber (2019-2020)

After Qualley, Davidson moved on to Cindy Crawford’s daughter, Kaia Gerber. Four months later, the couple broke up while Davidson was dealing with addiction and mental health issues.

Phoebe Dynevor (2020)

Davidson and the “Bridgerton” star saw each other for about six weeks, but things eventually soured because Dynevor was geographically undesirable.

Kim Kardashian (2021)

Davidson and Kardashian were spotted holding hands while riding a Halloween roller coaster together, leading some to believe they were romantically involved. However, Page Six sources say they’re “just friends.” The pair shared a kiss in an “Aladdin” sketch on SNL when Kardashian hosted in October.

In a Monday appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” model Emily Ratajkowski explained Davidson’s appeal and it’s pretty easy to understand.

“He’s a professional,” Ratajkowski said about Davidson. “First of all, you should know that about Pete.” She added, “Pete—he’s got the height. Obviously women find him very attractive.”

“I feel like only other men feel [that he isn’t attractive]. Guys are like, ‘Wow. What’s that guy got?’ And I’m like, I mean, he seems super charming,” she said. “He’s vulnerable. He’s lovely. His fingernail polish is awesome. He looks good!” Further, he has a “good relationship with his mom.” She concluded, “We love it. It’s hard to find them.”

Beckinsale recently affirmed a similar statement about Davidson by liking an Instagram post that read:

“I love how every time Pete Davidson starts dating another beautiful celebrity everyone’s like ‘wtf is happening how did he do this what is this mystery???’ and everybody refuses to entertain the possibility that he might have a nice personality.”

Evidently, Davidson is a really attentive boyfriend, too.

“My love language, when I’m in a relationship, is I treat the person I’m with like a princess,” he told Paper. “I try and go as above and beyond as possible,” he said, “because that’s what you’re supposed to do? If you’re in a relationship with someone, you’re just supposed to make that person feel as special as possible.”

The fact that women everywhere are in love with Davidson actually says something pretty awesome. It goes to show that even in the glamorous world of Hollywood there’s something irresistible about someone who’s funny, attentive, vulnerable, charming, down-to-earth and loves his mother.

‘Squid Game’ Is Even More Popular Than ‘Game Of Thrones’ (By One Metric At Least)

Squid Game is not only the biggest show in Netflix history, it’s also more popular than Game of Thrones. At least on YouTube.

Squid has surpassed Thrones in number of views on YouTube, according to content analytics firm Vobile. The Korean series is up to 17 billion views, which includes official trailers and clips, as well as “fan recreations of iconic moments, real-world challenges inspired by the plot, and even narration of user-generated video games based on the property,” Variety reports. Thrones, meanwhile, is at 16.9 billion views.

Vobile estimates that the 17 billion views have come from 129,000 uploaded videos, including traditional longform YouTube clips and their TikTok competitor YouTube Shorts… This sits in comparison to Game of Thrones, which had a decade to amass its fan army as opposed to the roughly eight weeks Squid Game has been in play. Thrones has 16.9 billion views from 420,000 uploaded videos, and an estimated 233 million engagements.

If you type in “squid game” on YouTube, the most-popular video isn’t a trailer; it’s “Challenge the squid game sugar pie, can you challenge success? #funny#shorts” with 78 million views (I love #funny#shorts), followed by “Kermit in Squid Game.” The top result for Thrones is the official season 8 trailer with 69 million views. Meanwhile, if this was 2012, “Squid Game of Thrones” would have 122 million views on Funny or Die.

It was a simpler time.

Morgan Wallen Reacts To Losing Album Of The Year At The CMAs After Being Banned From Attending

This year’s Country Music Awards took place Wednesday evening, which saw the biggest names in country music taking the stage to perform their hits. But one name in particular was missing from the ceremony: Morgan Wallen. Though the mullet-sporting singer’s recent album Dangerous was up for Album Of The Year last night, he was banned from attending the event altogether after this year’s scandal that caught him using a racial slur on camera. Wallen ended up losing the award and he took to social media to react to the whole ordeal shortly thereafter.

Wallen’s Dangerous album was up for an Album Of The Year award alongside Carly Pearce’s 29, Chris Stapleton’s Starting Over, Brothers Osbourne’s Skeletons, and Eric Church’s Heart. Each of the artists nominated for the award performed their music at some point during the night, except, of course, for Wallen. Chris Stapleton ended up taking home the Album Of The Year award over Wallen, but the singer still had words of gratitude.

Wallen shared his reaction to the loss on Twitter, showing love to his fans and his faith. “I wake up every morning and thank the Lord for my blessings. Tomorrow morning will be no different. I love y’all,” he wrote.

Though many of Wallen’s fans continued to support the singer after the viral video of him using racist language, many of his cohorts in country music called out his actions. Singer Maren Morris disavowed his actions while Jason Isbell called his behavior “disgusting and horrifying.”
