In recent years, Tyler The Creator has been using his full name, Tyler Okonma, more regularly in creative projects, especially in the credits of film projects which credit him more often by his government name than his nom de plume. A big reason for that was the late Virgil Abloh, as Tyler revealed in a touching Instagram post remembering the designer’s passion and impact on Tyler and other Black creatives.
“few years back i started using more of my African last name OKONMA because of how regal Virgils felt,” Tyler shared. “Everything he did felt like he said ‘hey over here, coast is clear’ whenever i questioned things.”
In a longer post than he usually shares, Tyler described Abloh as “a true geek” and “a cheerleader for everyone,” vowing to follow in the late designer’s footsteps. “That hand of his opened doors, lead people in and tossed the keys outside for the next person to have,” Tyler recalled. “wish i was able to see him see what his helping hand did for me. his spirit is around tho. i feel it. he’ll see it. i’ll keep pushing and trying things while leaving the door open. he’ll shake those pom-poms. we’ll keep that on loop. safe travels.”
Abloh’s death was reported on Sunday by his personal accounts and those of the LVMH brand (where he had been artistic director for the last few years), revealing that he’d battled “a rare, aggressive form of cancer” since 2019. His death was met by a wave of appreciative posts from friends and fans, who praised his creativity and pioneering in the world of high fashion, as well as a dedication from Kanye West.

In case you missed this recent streaming pick:
Kamikaze (HBO Max series) — This Polish show might not be on your radar yet, but it arrives with a riveting premise: what happens to one’s identity when everything that matters in your life disappears in one panicked heartbeat? Marie Reuther portrays a young woman who gets a terrible text message — her entire family is about to go down in a plane crash — that changes everything. She’s alone and picking up the pieces, and this feels very much like Morvern Callar but with a contemporary spin. Yes, expect tragedy here, but you also won’t be able to look away from where this protagonist goes.
While everyone dining at Beverly Hills Hotel this past Saturday morning was served up a satisfying meal, for one Dutch tourist, breakfast came with quite the show. On November 27 (and mere weeks after debuting their new relationship), socialite Kim Kardashian and actor/comedian Pete Davidson were spotted by Paul Barewijk, a Dutch music journalist on vacation, sharing breakfast together at the hotel’s restaurant.
According to Barewijk (via Page Six), he was chatting on the phone with his mom when he first recognized Davidson. Moments later, he realized the Saturday Night Live star was accompanied by new love interest Kardashian, and quickly approached the couple to ask for photos with them. Barewijk then took to Instagram to share the star-studded photos, captioning them with a very enthusiastic, “OMG MAKE ME CRAZY! SITTING NEXT TO KIM KARDASHIAN AND PETE DAVIDSON FOR BREAKFAST!”
While there’s been no shortage of skepticism regarding the legitimacy of Kardashian, 41, and Davidson’s, 28, relationship, according to Barewijk the couple definitely seemed like “more than” friends at breakfast — which might come as a bit of a bummer to the still grieving Kanye West. Barewijk told Page Six that “it seemed like a true date,” adding that while there was “no kissing,” “they were very close with each other.”
Barewijk went on to say that both Kardashian and Davidson were very kind towards his request for photos, both happily obliging him and Davidson offering to hold the camera for a proper selfie. The Dutch tourist then proceeded to tell Davidson “people in The Netherlands like him because of SNL,” making Barewijk the second person to theorize about just why Davidson is so damn charming in the past couple weeks.

While a recent storyline on Succession is going very badly for the financial future of Nicholas Braun‘s Cousin Greg, in the real world, it’s sparked a windfall for Greenpeace, which is seeing a surge of donations thanks to the HBO series. As revealed in the fifth episode of the currently airing third season, Greg’s grandfather Ewan Roy (James Cromwell) made the harsh, yet environmentally friendly decision to deprive his grandson of his inheritance and, instead, give the funds to Greenpeace.
The plot point was a crushing blow to Greg, who is hilariously attempting to sue the charity organization, but remarkably, it caused a surge in Succession viewers trying to find out how they can leave the environmental group a portion of their estates. Via The Guardian:
Greenpeace UK’s head of donors and legacies, John Hutchin, says the Emmy award-winning HBO series has brought an important but rarely discussed subject to the fore. “It’s incredible the amount of interest we’ve seen off the back of this storyline,” he says. “Our planet needs protecting now more than ever, and the gifts that people leave to us in their wills really are vital to funding our campaigns.”
Greenpeace UK gets around a sixth of its income from gifts left in wills. This year it expects to receive about £5.5m.
According to the organization, more than 22,000 people “have accessed online advice about making donations in their wills to Greenpeace,” which is a ten-fold increase to what Greenpeace normally sees on its site. Of course, the situation sucks for Cousin Greg, but as Succession‘s cutthroat characters likes to say, it’s just another case of “no real person involved.”
You think your co-worker is bad? Be thankful it’s not Lauren Boebert. Over the past week, the far-right politician referred to Rep. Ilhan Omar as being a member of the “jihad squad,” made up a story about being in an elevator with the Minnesota Democrat (who replied, “Sad she thinks bigotry gets her clout”), and after surprisingly apologizing “to the Muslim community” about her comments, on Monday she “refused to publicly acknowledge” the hateful things she’s said during a tense phone call with Omar.
“Today, I graciously accepted a call from Rep. Lauren Boebert in the hope of receiving a direct apology for falsely claiming she met me in an elevator, suggesting I was a terrorist, and for a history of anti-Muslim hate. Instead of apologizing for her Islamophobic comments and fabricated lies, Rep. Boebert refused to publicly acknowledge her hurtful and dangerous comments,” Omar wrote in a statement. During the phone call, Boebert “doubled down on her rhetoric and I decided to end the unproductive call. I believe in engaging with those we disagree with respectfully, but not when that disagreement is rooted in outright bigotry and hate.” Omar also called on House minority leader / t-shirt entrepreneur Kevin McCarthy to “actually hold his party accountable.”
Meanwhile, Boebert shared her own feelings about the phone call.
“She kept asking for a public apology. So I told Ilhan Omar that she should make a public apology to the American people for her anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-police rhetoric. She continued to press, and I continued to press back. And then, Rep. Omar hung up on me. Rejecting an apology and hanging up on someone is part of cancel culture 101 and a pillar of the Democrat Party.”
Boebert later doubled on Islamophobic rhetoric, saying that she would “continue to fearlessly put America first, never sympathizing with terrorists. Unfortunately, Ilhan can’t say the same thing. And our country is worse off for it.”
Imagine, just for a moment what someone hears when she says there are “politicians with suicide belts strapped their body.” here and tell me how we aren’t supposed to be concerned or outraged by this. pic.twitter.com/bWVSkdihnG
After Rico Nasty expressed her exasperation at the treatment she’s received over the course of the Playboi Carti Narcissist/King Vamp Tour, her fellow artists are coming to her defense, sharing messages of support and condemning the behavior of the concert attendees who’ve disrespected her at stops throughout the tour.
Among those who praised the standout, rock-influenced rapper were plenty of artists who know exactly how she feels firsthand. Kehlani, who was thrashed by fans over her dating history early in her career, wrote, “Rico is a gem of an artist and person, I hope you know how epic and special you are.” Megan Thee Stallion, who likewise has come under fire for everything from her love of anime to her case against Tory Lanez, shouted out Rico, calling her a “beautiful ass strong ass amazing artist/woman.”
Rico is a gem of an artist and person, i hope you know how epic and special you are @Rico_nastyy !!!!!!!!
And while other women like Doja Cat (whose profile pic is currently a photo of Rico, while Rico’s is a photo of Doja), Flo Milli, and Tierra Whack also expressed their love for Rico, Juicy J, a longtime legend within the Memphis hip-hop scene, lent his support as well — something that is meaningful considering the treatment of women overall within rap fan groups on Twitter.
Rico spoke up on Twitter after weeks of harassment by Carti fans on the tour, with one fan throwing a bottle at her. Eventually, the treatment prompted her to tweet, “I dead ass need at least two hours out of each day. To just cry… Crazy how I wanted a tour bus my whole life and now I just be on the tour bus crying myself to sleep every night . I wish I was dead just as much as y’all do trust me. Y’all win.”

Draymond Green is one of the NBA’s all-time great defenders. He’s made six All-Defensive Team appearances, won a Defensive Player of the Year award and finished among the top three on three other occasions. Through a quarter of the 2021-22 season, he appears on his way to adding to those accomplishments, helping anchor the Golden State Warriors’ top-ranked defense and potentially earning his fourth All-Star berth.
At times, his contributions go understated, in part because much of his greatness rests on what he does on the defensive end in holding things together for the Warriors, and he’s not a gaudy scorer. As Green sees it, “defense never goes viral because half the people don’t know what the hell they’re looking at.”
Draymond: “Defense never goes viral, because half the people don’t know what the hell they’re looking at. So it’s easy to say, ‘This guy made a shot, he got hot.’ Like, yeah. We all can f–king see that. So can my kids.” (via @warriors) pic.twitter.com/r4GqabYWSE
According to him, offensive exploits are easier to recognize, but analyzing defenses necessitates a specific understanding of what’s happening on the floor, which can be harder for viewers to accomplish.
“On the defensive end, it’s a little different,” Green said. “You have to actually know what you’re looking at in order to dissect it and pull it apart, and most people don’t.”
There is a point to Green’s statement, albeit one he makes a bit bluntly, as so much of what he does on the defensive end is about preventing action through movement and cutting things off before they begin, rather than the massive blocks or steals that stick out most. Those things are certainly harder to recognize at times, and it’s not surprising Green gets a bit frustrated when his efforts there get overlooked.
Green and the 18-2 Warriors will have another chance to author defensive plays that will, in his eyes, fly over most people’s heads when they face the 17-3 Phoenix Suns on Tuesday evening.
Sadly, Asian hate and violence against Asian people has become more common during the coronavirus pandemic. A defining incident of this from earlier this year was the massage parlor shooting that led to eight deaths and prompted reactions from Japanese Breakfast and John Legend. Now, BTS, perhaps the world’s most successful Asia-based group of the past couple years, admit that they’ve noticed the effects of prejudice against Asian people.
In a recent press conference for their Permission To Dance On Stage concerts in Los Angeles, the group was asked about Asian hate and RM said (as Teen Vogue reports), “I wasn’t born and raised abroad, but as Asians — these past years, our path around the world, we truly felt the walls. The walls can be always described as words, sometimes it’s visible, sometimes it’s invisible and sensitive. So when we talk about Asian hate, our path [is] these awards, our music. We just hope that this can truly help every Asian in the world.”
Speaking about hardship in the world in general, Jimin also noted, “We work hard at this because we want to bring healing and consolation to everyone else who is also going through these hard times and living through these challenges together. […] [These concerts] made me feel like we are back where we belong, and I hope everyone can end up where they belong.”
Few emerging indie acts have buzzed as loudly this year as Isle Of Wight duo Wet Leg. Singles like “Wet Dream” (whose can’t-miss video we described as a combination of “cottagecore and lobster hands“) and “Chaise Lounge” are the downright definition of infectious. The band, led by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, is no doubt poised to keep soaring in this here music world: Today, Wet Leg have announced plans for their debut’s album release, along with two new songs and tour dates.
The self-titled Wet Leg is due out April 8, 2022 via Domino Recordings. Album closer “Too Late Now” has a melodious guitar lick running through it, alongside throbbing bass that takes shape like songs from fellow British post-punks Dry Cleaning and Goat Girl. Teasdale says it’s about “sleepwalking into adulthood,” and the video takes a whimsical approach to that idea. “Oh No” sees an even more prominent guitar leading matter-of-fact lyricism that’s as sticky as everything the band has put out.
There’s so much to like here with Wet Leg and they’ll be touring through North America and Europe this year and next.
